MARC LLADO HILLIS EngineerinG, Design and Technology
AC HIE VEME N T S
My drawing and design talents were recognised from a young age with my work being used as examples on walls and studios throughout school and university. I achieved many awards and commendations during my studies. At school, I won the graphics award at higher and also achieved 100% for my portraits in art. At university, I was awarded 2 Glasgow Institute of Architects commendations, first-class honours, masters with distinction and 4th place in the UK national student designer award for my masters project. Although settled in a highly acclaimed architecture practice, I realised I found greater fulfilment volunteering at an annual diabetes camp than I did in the office. Teaching design and technology, sharing my passions, encouraging others to grow and develop made more sense as a career for me. I have enjoyed teaching more than I ever anticipated and I am looking forward to settling into a permanent role.

During my time at Bearsden Academy, I fully engaged with the wider school as much as possible, taking into account the unprecedented restrictions of Covid-19; I led a laser craft club to a group of seniors where I supported them to design and manufacture Christmas decorations; I drew up plans to turn an unused space into a common room for senior management to take to the PTA, and I designed ‘choices booklets’ for each of the D&T subjects on offer. I had plans to be involved with so much more, for example, portfolio prep for university applicants and further extra-curricular activities. I look forward to being able to contribute further after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Mockup for empty wall displays
The department at barrhead didn’t have an identity to tie all of their subjects, work sheets and wall displays together so I created a small logo for them to use on their materials. Colleagues then requested me to make a STEAM logo too.

iew Point will take place the The 14th ofwere July. within an educational workshopon in Glasgow. sections sized to fit in the clients own The entire design was based around the idea of prefabricating the structure in 4 sections
HIAB truck for ease of transport. This would have been ideal for the build as the workshop provided experienced staff to help with builds, helping reduce risk significantly. However, the entire build process had to be redesigned following the unfortunate closing of the workshop, a day before the timber was to be delivered. The build process then needed to be updated and tweaked to reflect the change in circumstance.
The Scottish Scenic Routes Initiative
Risk assessemnts, drawings packs, costing analysis and engineer consultations were undertaken and completed prior to the works begining. The project took 23 days in total to complete with the students from the international workshop providing help on 4 of those days. Two experienced builders contributed their expertese for a further 10 days. The remaining days were completed by Marc with help from family and friends. The official opening of the Loch Lomond View Point will take place on the 14th of July.
I designed and built a Scottish Scenic Routes Structure at Loch Lomond for the RSPB nature reserve. Their brief was for ‘a viewpoint to Ben Lomond.’
FOURTH PLACE
This is when I first realised I enjoyed practical craft skills and woodworking. I used a CNC machine to engrave a contour map of Loch Lomond on the feature wall and built the frame and cladding out of donated Larch wood..

SHORTLIST
40 Clifford Street
I implemented my practical skills when refurbishing my recent flat in Glasgow. It allowed me the opportunity to gain confidence in woodwork and develop my skills as a craftsman. I designed and built many bespoke items such as the plywood areas in the kitchen, the pullout pantries and the cabinets to the bathroom. After learning from tutorials, I also undertook small plumbing and electrical jobs as well as tiling the entire bathroom myself. I enjoy learning new skills.
