“This painting features a lovely pair of Cheyenne moccasins, circa 1900. The beading is done using the “lazy stitch” method used almost exclusively by the Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho, and Pawnee. During the summer, men and boys wore low-cut, close-fitting moccasins with stiff rawhide soles and soft buckskin uppers. The small branch and berries are Juniper. Native people ate the berries fresh or in cakes and used the bark in many utilitarian ways.”

hen John Fery came West for the first time in 1891, little did he know he would become one of the most famous painters of Glacier National Park in the U. S.. Louis Hill, head of the Great Northern Railroad, used his influence to lure Fery to do over 200 large paintings of the park. Many of those pieces still hang in lodges and hotels in and around Glacier, as well as being found in numerous museums and private collections throughout the country. While the Glacier scenes continue to be his most popular works, some collectors feel that his works of the areas around Jackson Lake, Northern Idaho and Western Washington are his finest works, as he was not under the pressure of the time lines the railroad put on him. 532 John Fery (1859-1934) Moose at Sunset 24” x 36” oil on canvas Signed and dated ‘32 lower right $6,000-9,000

Kenneth Riley (1919-2015) Kenneth Pauling Riley was born in 1919 in Waverly, MO to Irish Immigrants. As a young man, he was an accomplished musician, but painting was his true passion. Throughout his life, he fine-tuned his artistic abilities by studying at the Kansas City Art Institute under Thomas Hart Benton and was also privileged to study under Harvey Dunn and Frank DuMond. During WWII, he worked as a “combat artist” while with the Coast Guard. Following the war, he became a successful illustrator, starting with the Saturday Evening Post, later working for Life magazine and National Geographic, among others. In the ‘60s, he was commissioned by the US Park Service to “paint the parks”, which is where his lifelong love of the West was born. In 1973, Riley moved to Tucson, AZ as a full-time resident. A long and fruitful career as a full-time artist followed. Among his many accolades was election into the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America in 1982. He also won the Prix de West in 1995. His works are displayed in many of the finest museum and private collections in the country. His work has a classical style and very often embraces the spirituality of the Native Americans he loved to depict. 538

Guy Deel (1933-2005) His 50-year art career began at age 17 working in an animation studio in Dallas, TX. It was in the 1950s after graduating from The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles that Deel spent two years creating recruiting posters for the Army. Around the same time his illustration career began with national advertising campaigns and illustrations for major publications such as “The Saturday Evening Post”, “Esquire”, and “Reader’s Digest” and eventually opened up to include numerous well-known works for the Walt Disney company including “The Lion King”, “Pocahontas”, and “Tarzan”, among many others. He also illustrated over 250 book covers including the highly popular Louis L’Amour series. He created the extraordinary 138’ mural at the Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles, depicting the history of the American West. Gene Autry was a good friend of Deel’s (pictured above) and knew that Deel’s artistic talent and reputation for historical accuracy would come through for all to enjoy.

551 Navajo Rug 14’ x 9’ Crystal Area pictorial weaving with gold, black and red aniline dye, featuring an Indian head in the center. Woven from all handspun wool. Circa 1930. $10,000-15,000 Provenance: Letter of history to accompany the lot. Letter states: The rug was commissioned by Ken Lively of Chama, NM. The family seems to believe it was commissioned in the 1950s, but two experts believe the rug was woven far before that. The wife of a Navajo Tribe Chief was the artist/weaver. We don’t have the Chief’s name, however the tribe was located in an area between Farmington and Gallup, NM. When half completed, the woman was pregnant. The Chief asked his wife what symbol or center figure she planned to weave into the design. She told him she wanted to put a Chief’s head there. The Chief told her that symbol could only be used ‘if she had a son’. Then she would be permitted to place the symbol in the center of the rug. She was told to stop weaving and wait until she had the child. She stopped, waited, had a son, then completed the design and the rug. It was then delivered to Mr. Lively. It was placed on the floor in the center of his den in Chama for 40 years, from 1955-1995. Then it was moved with Mr. Lively to Coeur d’Alene, ID and placed on the floor of his daughter’s family room from 1995-2005. It was then rolled and wrapped and kept in storage for 12 years, after 50 years of daily use.

Olaf C. Seltzer (1877-1957) Trail of the Diamond R, Great Divide, Montana 24” x 36” oil on canvas Signed lower left Verso: Old gallery sticker dating painting 1936. $70,000-90,000 Provenance: Property of Great Falls Brewing Co., given as gift to outgoing President MacPhee in approximately 1959. Present owner by decent. Letter to accompany the lot. States as follows: “Trail of the Diamond R” by O.C. Seltzer, noted Western Artist. Early day freight transportation was done by oxen, mules, or horses, and the Diamond R Company was at one time the biggest outfit in Montana with headquarters in Helena and working wagon trains in every direction from there. Each wagon train was made up of about three or four units- each unit having three wagons with from twelve to fourteen horses and the whole outfit was in charge of a “Wagon Boss”. Besides such big outfits as the Diamond R, many small outfits of but one unit were operated by private individuals. A string of freight horses were handled by what is known as the “jerk-line” and is operated by the driver from the rear wheel horse, which he rides. The “jerk-line” runs forward through the left side eyes on the hames of all the horses on the left side only; being fastened to the bit of the near lead horse, which is the “key” horse of the whole string. One jerk of the line with the shout of the “gee” sends the horse to the left. Two jerks of the line with the shout of “haw” means to the right. In order for the “key” horse to work with his mate, this horse has fastened to the bottom front of the hames a wooden stick known as the “jock stick”. The other end of which is fastened to the bit of his team mate - the other lead horse - and this enables the key horse to control all movements of the leaders conveyed to that one horse by the “jerk line” signals. This picture represents the Diamond R outfit of three units on the trail.” Handwritten note below: “Diamond R operated in Montana in the ‘70s up ‘80s. Freighting was a tough game at the best and it was toughest on the horse (note skeleton of horse in foreground). This poor fellow died in the line of duty. The only ceremony was to take the harness off and leave him. This is truly a Montana picture by a Montana artist given by a Montana men to Mr. & Mrs. MacPhee.”

Silver Tip 24” x 32” oil on canvas Signed and dated ‘07 lower left $60,000-75,000 Provenance: Collection of M. Anthony Greene, Jackson, WY.
Tucker Smith was born in St. Paul, MN in 1940. At the age of 12, his family moved to Pinedale, WY. After high school, he attended the University of Wyoming where he earned a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Art. After working for the State as a computer programmer for several years, he chose to pursue a full-time career as an artist in 1971. He became a founding member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group in the mid1970s and the group went on to play a major role in promoting Western Art in Montana and the surrounding states. In 1993, Tucker and his wife returned to Pinedale and bought a ranch on the Hoback Rim where they still reside today. The rugged beauty of the area provides Tucker unlimited inspiration for his artwork. Tucker has won many of the highest honors in the Western Art world, including the Prix de West as well at the Bob Kuhn Award at the Autry Museum. Smith says, “In painting nature, I try to be faithful to the actual while concentrating on the elements that attracted me to the scene. I try to avoid monotony in a composition.” March in Montana is proud to offer, “Silver Tip” in our 2019 sale, which accomplishes these goals.

While not the most famous or best artist ever to come out of Montana, (A Great Falls artist holds that title) Ace could certainly be listed as one of the most colorful artists. Stories of Ace cutting a wide swath through the towns of Montana are legendary. A talented painter, as well as an accomplished sculptor, it’s hard to find a native Montanan who doesn’t have a story about Ace. He was also a very generous artist with his time and his art. Many of the museums in the Big Sky State owe Ace a debt of gratitude for his support over the years.

587 Ace Powell (1912-1978) Madonna and Child 28” x 22” oil on canvas Signed lower left $1,500-2,500 Provenance: Letter included with lot. “Painting finished February 8, 1972. The picture called “Madonna and Child” was deliberately painted rough to give the primitive feeling to the subject matter because during the period of time between 1930-1955 the Indian people were trying to learn to live the white mans way. They lived in one roomed shacks, usually with a tipi in the back yard. They were given army surplus blanketdts [sic], many times well used. The squaws would then take bits of bright cloth and sew it to the blanket, resulting in a quilt effect which often times turned out quite attractive.” 588 Ace Powell (1912-1978) Warrior at Sunset 16” x 20” oil on canvas Signed lower left $3,000-4,000

Edgar Paxson (1852-1919)
Two Scouts Watching Custer’s Command, Big Horn
30” x 20” oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1916 lower right. $50,000-75,000 Completed in 1916, this piece was done when Paxson had his studio in Missoula, Montana. He had moved from Butte, Montana to Missoula in 1906. The pollution from the copper mines was one of the reasons for the move. The other was that Paxson’s wife Laura was tired of the busy and sometimes dangerous lifestyle that surrounded Butte at the time. During the time that this piece was painted, WW1 was on the mind of the country, not the old west art market. Paxson did very few paintings during this time. He was too old to serve, but he put on his old Army uniform and instructed kids at the local school. Paxson was good friends with Charlie Russell. When Paxson was asked to be the Grand Marshall of the 4th of July parade in Missoula in 1915 he invited Charlie down to ride alongside him. It is said that twenty-five thousand people packed the downtown to see the two famous artists side by side. When Paxson passed in 1919, Russell penned a fitting tribute to the great artist. The tribute ended “I am a painter too, but Paxson has done some things that I cannot do. He was a pioneer painter. He was also a soldier who fought under the colors of our country. Paxson loved Montana. May the land where he has gone be even more beautiful than the mountains that he loved.”

William “Fire Bear” Standing This self-taught artist was born on the Fort Peck Reservation in 1904. He became well known in Montana but less so beyond, since he lived in the “Big Empty” and lacked contacts for national recognition. Standing admired Charlie Russell, and his work often reflects Russell’s “Dreamtime Montana”, wistfully depicting the Big Sky’s journey from old-time buffalo days to the industrialized 20th century. He sometimes focused a humorous, but caustic eye on the reservation problems of the day. Quite versatile, Standing created paintings, sketches, postcards, pen and inks, and even cartoons. Scores of his pen and inks illustrate “Land of the Nakoda”, the well-regarded Federal Writers’ Project account of Assiniboine history. Fire Bear died as his talent was reaching a new maturity; killed in a late-night car accident near Zortman. Standing’s work has been praised by Western art authority John Ewers of the Smithsonian Institution, collected by fabled Mint Saloon owner Sid Willis and many others, and exhibited in Washington DC, Paris, and elsewhere. Today it is found in private and public collections throughout the West. A full-blooded Assiniboine, Standing preferred the name of Fire Bear. But he was also an enterprising businessman who signed his paintings as the white man called him “William Standing”. He once explained he didn’t mind doing that—if it made people buy more of them.

A
fter 32 years of supporting the Western art market, the March in Montana family say a big Thank You to Bob and Charla Nelson. Without this fantastic team the Western art market would never have been the same. Rarely has a couple had a larger impact on an entire market than Bob and Char. Nobody works harder. Nobody works smarter. And nobody knows the game better than the Nelson pair. The teamwork and expertise they have exhibited to all of us is an excellent example of not only how to run multiple successful businesses, but how to run a successful life. They have built a strong tradition here at March in Montana and those of us carrying the torch are very grateful. These are, indeed, big shoes to fill.
From all of us at March in Montana; a BIG Thank You to Bob and Char for this auction called March in Montana and for all of their help and support.

Important information: As a courtesy, March In Montana offers the option of bidding by telephone or absentee bid. In the event that the number of telephone bids on a specific lot exceeds the number of lines available, bid forms received earliest will take precedence. Absentee bids are executed alternately in competition with bidders in attendance & online. A (+) sign to the right of the bid amount will authorize the auctioneer to bid one more increment. (See increment table below). In the event of identical absentee bids being received, the earliest will take precedence. Every attempt will be made to reach you and/or place bids on your behalf. However, March In Montana accepts no responsibility for failure to execute telephone bids or absentee bids for any reason. Telephone bidders must be willing to bid up to 75% of the low estimate, otherwise please leave an absentee bid.
