150 Edgar Paxson (1852-1919) “There, there, Sonny, don’t be afraid, I ain’t goin’ to hurt yer.” 19” x 13” watercolor illustration for the book Ramrod Jones by Clint Brown Signed and dated 1905 lower right $3,000-5,000 Provenance: 15” x 11” pencil sketch and hardcover copy of Ramrod Jones to accompany the lot. Illustration featured on first page of the book.

Excerpt from the book: My uncle was a very hard and cruel man...”Yer lazy, good-for-nothing little thief,” he said. “I’ll learn yer. I’ll shake the life out of yer.”... “Git up an’ take off your clothes”, he said. “I’ll give yer something yer’ll never forgit.” ...When I was stripped, I faced him. He picked up his stick...I did not cry out. I took it all with my eyes shut. I will not try to tell you how he beat me. I remember but little of it, except burning pains all over me, and the wild thought in my mind that I must not give way. His stick broke. He threw it down and lammed me on the side of the head with his open hand. It knocked me down. But I was soon up again, and looked at him stubbornly. He was plumb mad with anger. He rushed at me and raised his clenched fist. I had heard nothing behind me, and I do not suppose he had either, for each of us was all taken up in watching the other. He never hit me again. When his fist was raised above his head something struck him, and he gave a groan and fell in a heap before me. I looked around. A man was standing near us, leaning on his rifle. “There, there, Sonny,” he said to me, “don’t be afraid. I ain’t a-goin’ to hurt yer.”

Cowboy Artists Of America In June of 1965, five artists met at a tavern in Sedona, AZ to formally organize The Cowboy Artists of America. Those five men were Charlie Dye, Joe Beeler, John Hampton, George Phippen, & Fred Harman, Jr.. Phippen was elected the first President and they pounded out the bylaws over a few bottles of Coors beer. One of their goals was “to perpetuate the memory & culture of the Old West as typified by Remington & Russell.” The following offerings are by past & current members of the Cowboy Artists of America.

There is no shortage of interesting stories when one looks at the early members of the CA, and Fred Harman, Jr. is no exception. Raised on a Colorado Ranch, he moved to Kansas City at an early age. It was there that he partnered with another young artist to form their own company called the Kansas City Film Advertising Company. The venture failed and both artists headed off in different directions. Fred’s partner was Walt Disney. 119

In 1981 he opened his own studio in Ruidoso, New Mexico. His work is highly detailed, sometimes with several hundred pieces welded together and combining paints with patinas. He has been described as the Master of Realism, depicting Native American Indians where he focuses on capturing the human spirit with much attention to detail in form and historic content.

T

here are four artists who are particularly enduring to Alaskans. Known as the Alaska Four, they are Ted Lambert, Jules Dahlager, Sydney Laurence, and Eustace Paul Ziegler. These four helped create the image of the “Last Frontier” Alaska. All four had a toughness that is in the core of Alaskans. We’re proud to offer pieces by each of these artists along with the other Alaskan artists featured.

*One would have to look far and wide to find an artist with a more interesting and fulfilling life than Belmore Browne. His childhood was far from normal. His father and grandfather had accumulated wealth in New York which afforded Belmore the opportunity to experience Europe at an early age. His formative years were spent in Paris, Venice, and Florence. Eventually settling in Tacoma, Washington, his father invested in the timber of the Pacific Northwest. The environment allowed him to pursue his love of the outdoors, and he started to develop as an artist. He was sent to New York to study art under instructors such as William Merritt Chase and Frank Benson. He later traveled to France to study at Academie Julian. Partly because of his art skills, he was asked to join an expedition sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History to explore unknown parts of Alaska and the Yukon. For a decade he explored, hunted and fished throughout Alaska. During that time there were three attempts to scale Denali (Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America. During the 1912 attempt the party made it to within 300 yards of the peak. He later testified before Congress and was instrumental in making Denali (Mount McKinley) a national park. Besides his painting, Belmore was also an author. His works included books on survival, as well as children’s adventure books. He eventually settled in Banff, Alberta where he and his wife had two children. His son, George Browne, who died in an accident at 40 years old, is sometimes called “the greatest wildlife artist you’ve never heard of”.

In 1901, at the encouragement of South Dakota artist Ada Caldwell, he enrolled at the Chicago Institute of Art. His South Dakota work ethic paid his tuition, as he was a sought-after worker on the local farms. Howard Pyle proved to be an influential teacher to Dunn; he studied under him at two of Pyle’s schools. In 1908 Dunn got married, and N.C. Wyeth served as his best man. In 1917 Dunn began a two year journey on the front lines of WWI as a graphic reporter. His works from that time are housed in the Smithsonian. In his later years, Dunn was a well-known and in demand teacher. His students included names like John Clymer, Dean Cornwell, and Harold Von Schmidt. When the name Joe Halko comes up in an art conversation, it’s not the long career, numerous awards, or off the charts skill that will dominate the conversation. It’s how humble, kind, and generous with his time that Joe always was. Those attributes show up in his work and are just a few of the reasons he is one of Montana’s most beloved sculptors. We are pleased to have a body of his works for the 2022 sale, many of which have not been seen by the public. These works are out of a Private Collection in Lakeside, MT.

The ranch was founded in 1893 by Colonel George Washington Miller, a former Confederate soldier. The ranch was the birthplace of the 101 Wild West shows and also the territory where oil was first struck in Oklahoma. In 1907 the three Miller sons embarked on a goal of having a nationally-known Wild West Show. This was during a time that many of the other shows were winding down. They seemed to be met with bad luck along the way as the show struggled financially and the ranch later filed for bankruptcy in 1932. A portion of the ranch is now on the National Historic Register and the Ranch was inducted into the Texas Trail of Fame in 2003. 184

Private Collection, North Platte, NE. To both celebrate and enhance the Model 1873’s prestige, Winchester established a coveted “1 of 1000” grade in 1875. Barrels producing unusually small groupings during test-firing were fitted to rifles with set triggers and a special finish. Marked “1 of 1000,” they sold for a then pricey $100 (equivalent to $2,400 in 2020). A popular 1950 Western starring James Stewart, Winchester ‘73, was based on the coveted gun. March in Montana is proud to present two of the most historically significant paintings to hit the market by Olaf Wieghorst. After serving in the Army on the US/Mexican border, Olaf and his two best friends, Bud Jones and Fred Stark, left the Army life to tackle their dream of being cowboys. As they headed out across the Pedregosa Mountains, Olaf’s thoughts were “By God it’s happened! I really am a cowboy.” The three ended up around Glenwood, New Mexico where Olaf went to work for Elton Cunningham, owner of the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch on Whitewater Creek. “Cunnie” as he was known to the locals, had a colorful past that included names like John Parks, Jim Lowe (The Sundance Kid) and Butch Cassidy. Cunningham was friends with John Allred and his son Gus. He would come into town and quench his thirst at the Allred’s establishment - the Blue Front Bar in Glenwood. The story, as told by Gus Allred, is that one day when Olaf or “Ollie” as he was known, was having a beer in the Blue Front and said “Gus, let me paint some pictures on your walls”. Gus later recalled he paid Olaf all the beer he could drink that day, and maybe a six pack to go. Because things could get a little rough and rowdy in the Blue Front, Gus’s son, Buddy, decided to take the pieces down in the early 1960s. It was at this time the paintings were reframed and some inpainting was done by a local artist named Chet Kerchinski. Wieghorst returned to Glenwood several times over the years and always stopped in to say hello to the Allred family. He used the now famous brand of the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch as part of his signature on his artwork for most of his career. In the 1970s, Olaf’s son, Roy, came back to Glenwood and did a documentary on the area and highlighted the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch.

Born in Bangor, Maine, James Everett Stuart became known for his panoramic landscapes from Maine to California to Alaska to the Panama Canal, but especially of the American West with focus on Northern California & Oregon. Reportedly, he painted more than 5000 paintings during his lifetime & originated a method of painting on aluminum & wood with a special adhering process that he thought made his work quite durable but proved not to be so. He also wrote on the back of most of his paintings. His parents took him to California at the age of eight & the family settled in San Francisco where he attended the public schools & studied art at the San Francisco School of Design. His early work was dramatic California landscape including the Sacramento & San Joaquin rivers, & in style the works were moody & mysterious. He first traveled to the Northwest in 1876, & in 1881, he opened his studio in Portland, OR & from there traveled throughout the West & East Coast & into Mexico. Subjects included Yosemite as well as California missions & adobes. He painted landscapes whose sales ultimately were financially remunerative & which established his reputation. In 1885, he first went to Yellowstone where he camped for several weeks and filled his sketchbook for studio paintings. The following summer, he returned, having negotiated a free pass from the Northern Pacific Railroad in exchange for paintings. At the end of the summer, he went East to NYC on the return part of his train pass. Settling a studio in New York for four years, he continued to arrange several more summer railroad passes to Yellowstone.

649-A Stuart first traveled to Yellowstone in 1885, and camped for several weeks, supplying himself with fish for food, climbing steep cliffs including Electric Peak, and filling his sketchbook for studio paintings. He had studied art with Virgil Williams, Raymond Yelland, Thomas Hill, and William Keith at the San Francisco School of Design, and hungry to paint the untrammeled West, set out with his paints, easel and tent, from which he sold his paintings near tourist sites in Yellowstone. In this scene, Stuart captures the power, drama, and scale of the great curiosity that were Yellowstone’s geysers.

Of those years, he expressed that he much preferred being in the park to studio painting, but he stopped visiting in 1889 & instead traveled to AK & the Coastal Range. During much of the 1890s he lived in Chicago but in 1912 returned to San Francisco until his death in 1941. There, from his studio near Union Square, he was highly successful & popular among his peers, underscored by his membership in the Bohemian Club. Many of the owners of old homes in California have his paintings on the wall, suggestive of a time of grandeur. One of his paintings is in the White House, & his work is in the historical societies of Oregon, Washington, & Montana. - askART biography.

649-B One month prior to painting his energetic scene of geysers in Yellowstone, Stuart visited Shoshone Falls near Boise, Idaho. He deftly created a sense of motion, grandeur, and drama, depicting the mist from the falls rising hundreds of feet in the air. It was one of the many wonders that easterners were anxious to learn about through the art of painters like Stuart. There is a wonderful immediacy and spontaneity to this painting.

*Redbird was Charles M. Russell’s own mount. Russell expressed his general feelings about the horse in one of his Rawhide Rawlins stories when he said “…it will take a million years for the gas wagon to catch up with the hoss in what he’s doing for man.” Originally, it was presented to Isabel Brown of Great Falls, MT as a wedding gift. Both the Brown’s & Russell’s lived on 4th Ave. North in Great Falls. “C.M.R. delivered the gift himself the day before the wedding. It came in an old shoe box wrapped in ‘crushed’ tissue paper with no card or outside wrapping. Both Mr. & Mrs. Russell attended my wedding & Charlie died soon afterward – on October 24, 1926,” wrote the recipient. The Rockwell Foundation of Corning, New York recently acquired the model from Isabel Brown Hall. The Montana historical Society offers Redbird by arrangement with the Foundation under an agreement stating that no more casts will ever be made.
