Ace Powell While perhaps not the most famous artist to hail out of Montana, Ace Powell could certainly be considered one of the most colorful. Stories of Ace; the man AND the artist, cut a legendary swath through every town in Montana, and it’s difficult to find a native Montanan without one. Distinguished as much as a sculptor (having worked in bronze, terra cotta, wood and stone) as he is a painter, it’s believed that he created nearly 15,000 works during his relatively short lifetime. Known to be generous with both his time and his talents, a number of Museums throughout the Big Sky State owe Ace a huge debt of gratitude for his support and contributions over those years.

The following 20 prints are reproductions of works that all appear in the catalogue raisonne as drawings or paintings that were completed by 1897. Under magnification, the pieces appear to be handcolored over a black and white printing process. The process of these current works is half tone, not lithography; also indicated by review under magnification. In 1897, Robert Howard Russell printed a group of 62 works by Remington in an unpaginated volume of prints. The group was reproduced in half-tone and these 20 came from that volume.

Upon landing, the tribe was conducting a ceremony in traditional dress when they went over to investigate this man from the sky, as they had never seen a plane up close, let alone a pilot. As the mother and her daughter tentatively and shyly approached the man dressed in leather and flight gear, the little one is anxious and tentative. Sensing this, the pilot, with his face full of castor oil from the aircraft, kneels down and timidly reaches out his hand in friendship as the little girl is secure with her mother telling her that it is okay to say hello. For the Native Americans, the world in which they now live is unrecognizable to them as progress pushes their way of life behind.

From writings of Eugene J. Diodato: “For me, so much of art is just having your heart in the right place...creating is happiness. The paintings I have done are part of my life and are much like a journal of my personal experiences and expressions of my seeing and being. They are very real and vital pictures of times, places and perceptions along my heart’s path. These paintings were not done as an economic activity. They are painted with love and that was, and is, their only reason for being what they are. I am in love with beauty and truth, and I have found they are one. For me, heart is art-no difference. My art is Heart Work. So often I feel as though I am an eye witness to creation. Nature has for me, a refreshing and inexhaustible fountain of inspiration and wonder. I paint it, I drink of it, and love it.”

Wood carving is recognized world-wide as one of the
most ancient “arts” in human history. Originally, it was performed for strictly utilitarian purposes, but it’s evident that even Early Man took pride in what they were creating by adding embellishments as time went on. Today, woodcarving has become as desirable a medium for artistry as it is for continued functional purposes.

A quote from Clarke’s wife from the book Blackfeet John L. Cutapuis Clarke and the Silent Call of Glacier National Park: America’s Wood Sculptor, by Larry Len Peterson: “Mr. Russell came to visit my husband every summer except last (1926, the year Russell died)...His visits were of greatest possible moments to John. Altho at first greeting, John invariably told Mr. Russell (Indian sign language--of which he too was very good), ‘Let us exchange heads, yours is fine.’ Then he (Mr. Russell) would laugh and tell John, ‘Yours too is good.’ Mr. Russell would then look at all of my husband’s work, sculpture and landscape (oil) and praise it, encouraging just enough and not too much. He was so understanding, calmly deeply sympathetic, and in all wholly lovable.”

30 ½” x 23 ½” oil on canvas Signed and dated 1908 lower right Verso: Titled and signed. $20,000-30,000 Completed in 1908, this piece was done when Paxson had his studio in Missoula, Montana, shortly after his move from Butte in 1906. During the time this piece was painted, it was WWI on the mind of the country, not the old West art market. Paxson did very few paintings during this time. He was too old to serve, but he put on his old Army uniform & instructed kids at the local school. Paxson was a good friend of Charlie Russell. When Paxson was asked to be the Grand Marshall of the 4th of July parade in Missoula in 1915 he invited Charlie to ride alongside him. It is said that 25,000 people packed the downtown area to see the two famous artists riding side by side. When Paxson passed away in 1919, Russell penned a fitting tribute to the great artist: “...I am a painter too, but Paxson has done some things that I cannot do. He was a pioneer painter. He was also a soldier who fought under the colors of our country. Paxson loved Montana. May the land where he has gone be even more beautiful than the mountains that he loved.”

Philip Goodwin The Race 30” x 20” oil on canvas Signed and dated 1904 lower right
$30,000-50,000 We’re proud to offer this illustration by Philip Goodwin. Completed in 1904 for Outing Magazine, it was not the first or the last piece he had done for that publication. 1904 turned out to be a successful one for Goodwin, as while studying with Howard Pyle, McClure’s also published four illustrations along with a story by Charles Roberts. By then, Goodwin was becoming known for his sporting and animal illustrations and attracted the attention of the country’s most famous hunter, President Theodore Roosevelt. A few years later, Roosevelt recorded his hunting adventures in “African Game Trails” and Goodwin provided the illustrations. It was around this time that canines were common in Goodwin’s work – both wild and domestic. This was no better shown than when he illustrated Jack London’s “Call of the Wild” in 1903.

*Dodge, Inc. was started in Chicago in the mid 1920s by Ray E. Dodge, a former track star in the 1924 Olympics. In 1930, he moved the company to Los Angeles to begin making “Oscars” for Hollywood’s Academy Awards and in 1949 began producing Hollywood’s “Emmys”. Dodge lamps are made of heavy cast grey metal. The company used five different finishes on its pieces, but their trademark high-gloss bronze finish with two-tone highlights of rich, red-golden copper from the Southwest’s great copper mines earned Dodge the tag line, “The Best of the West”.

March in Montana is pleased to present the following selection of works from William Standing.
The collection is from Bob and Bess Hovey of Wolf Point, Montana; part of the area where William Standing grew up. Both Bob and Bess were born in Wolf Point and spent most of their lives there, running first a grocery store, then a small Cattlemen’s hotel and finally the Chevrolet Dealership. They had many friends among the Indians on the reservation and Bob even learned to speak the Assiniboine language. They appreciated and collected Indian art, beadwork, and jewelry. They began to collect William Standing’s paintings in the late 40s, continuing to add to the collection over the years. They also collected the artwork of another internationally known artist from the Wolf Point area, Floyd Tennison (Tenny) DeWitt. Bob and Bess were instrumental in commissioning a large bronze sculpture of a cowboy on horseback for the town center on Main Street in Wolf Point. One of his paintings is also included in the auction.

The Last Chase 38” x 69” oil on canvas, mounted on drywall Signed and dated 1925 lower right, titled lower center
$25,000-35,000 There is no better representation of the early West than the buffalo hunt scene. Since early artists like George Catlin and Alfred Jacob Miller set foot on this side of the Missouri, there was an immediate fascination with this Native American ritual. Charles Russell painted many works of the iconic scene and they are some of his most sought-after pieces. This piece by William Standing is no exception to this rule. Completed in 1925, the large painting was done on canvas and was later mounted in a tavern in Eastern Montana. When the building was torn down, the piece was saved and became part of the Hovey Collection. This piece, along with many other Standing paintings, has been in storage for many years. This is indeed a historic gem of the West that we are pleased to offer.

William Standing (1904-1951) Confrontation
25 ½” x 36 ½” oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1931 lower right. $10,000-15,000 Provenance: Conservation report to accompany lot. William “Fire Bear” Standing was born on the Fort Peck Reservation in 1904. He became well known in Montana but less so beyond, since he lived in the “Big Empty” and lacked contacts for national recognition. Standing admired Charlie Russell, and his work often reflects Russell’s “Dreamtime Montana”, wistfully depicting the Big Sky’s journey from old-time buffalo days to the industrialized 20th century. He sometimes focused a humorous, but caustic, eye on the reservation problems of the day. Quite versatile, Standing created paintings, sketches, postcards, pen and inks, and even cartoons. Scores of his pen and inks illustrate “Land of the Nakoda”, the well-regarded Federal Writers’ Project account of Assiniboine history. Fire Bear died as his talent was reaching a new maturity; killed in a late-night car accident near Zortman. Standing’s work has been praised by Western art authority John Ewers of the Smithsonian Institution, collected by fabled Mint Saloon owner Sid Willis and many others, and exhibited in Washington DC, Paris, and worldwide. Today his work can be found in private and public collections throughout the West. A full-blooded Assiniboine, Standing preferred the name Fire Bear, but he was also an enterprising businessman who signed his paintings as the white man called him “William Standing”. He once explained he didn’t mind doing that—if it made people buy more of them.

617 As a young boy growing up in Southern Germany in the early 20th century, Nick Eggenhofer was fascinated by stories of the American West. When he finally had a chance to visit in 1925, the region did not disappoint. A long and wonderful career as an illustrator, specializing in Western themes, began soon afterward. “The Last Mile” (Lot 616) is a great example of Eggenhofer’s work after he’d settled in Cody, WY. His depiction of a stage in the wintertime demonstrates the expertise in his ability to capture not only the landscapes of the West, but also the early methods of transportation throughout the West, which became a staple of many of his works. 183

After returning from WWI he worked as a banker for five years, then became manager of a furniture company in Billings, Montana. In the early 30s the family moved to Cody, Wyoming where he founded the Shoshone Furniture Company. His creations can be found in hotels, lodges and ranch homes throughout the West. His quality of craftsmanship, use of materials and incorporation of Native American artifacts and motifs make his work readily recognizable.

At the age of 20, while working at a photography studio in Denver, CO, Frank Rinehart met and formed a partnership with one of the most important photographers at the time; William Henry Jackson. By 1885 he’d gained the confidence to open his own studio in Omaha, NE, where he worked and lived for the following 40+ years. Rinehart became best known for his Native American portraits from the 1898 Indian Congress, which took place in Omaha. There is where he met and worked with Adolf Muhr, who was also renowned for his work with Edward S. Curtis. The significance of Rinehart’s work is evident in a number of ways. Together, Rinehart and Muhr produced over 1,200 Indian portraits. According to Thomas Southall, former curator of the Spencer Art Museum in KS, “The dramatic beauty of these portraits is especially impressive as a departure from earlier, less sensitive photographs of Native Americans. Instead of being detached, ethnographic records, the Rinehart photographs are portraits of individuals with an emphasis on strength of expression.”

Today, both his paintings and bronzes have been, and continued to be, featured in many individual and group shows from Georgia to California. Having corresponded with his idol, Charlie Russell, for several years, he went there to became Charlie Russell’s first (and only) protégé. After Charlie’s passing in 1926, Joe moved to California, where another idol, Edward Borein, introduced him to the movie industry. As a result of his tenacity and good connections, Joe enjoyed a long career in art by strongly believing in the need to authentically portray the American West.

*Richard Lorenz was born in Germany, but immigrated
to the U.S. (Milwaukee), having been recruited by the American Panorama Company to paint horses in their commissioned panoramas. Once he got a taste of the West, he traveled it extensively, but always returned to WI, where he enjoyed a teaching and fine art career. He loved the Plains-the landscapes and the storms that moved across them, as well as the Indian people. His works made their way around the world, having been exhibited from Chicago and St. Louis to Munich and Paris.

As a young boy, he explored the forests and all the animals within, developing a true love for all creatures, great and small. Over his vast career, all of these creatures were depicted at one time or another and he became known for that, as well as his highly accurate and detailed landscapes, especially of Montana. “The Garden Wall” is one of his best works. Here he captures one of Glacier Park’s most iconic scenes, highlighting a small group of elk, which was one of his favorite things to paint.

Excerpt from the book: My uncle was a very hard and cruel man... ”Yer lazy, good-for-nothing little thief,” he said. “I’ll learn yer. I’ll shake the life out of yer.”... “Git up an’ take off your clothes”, he said. “I’ll give yer something yer’ll never forgit.” ...When I was stripped, I faced him. He picked up his stick... I did not cry out. I took it all with my eyes shut. I will not try to tell you how he beat me. I remember but little of it, except burning pains all over me, and the wild thought in my mind that I must not give way. His stick broke. He threw it down and lammed me on the side of the head with his open hand. It knocked me down. But I was soon up again, and looked at him stubbornly. He was plumb mad with anger. He rushed at me and raised his clenched fist. I had heard nothing behind me, and I do not suppose he had either, for each of us was all taken up in watching the other. He never hit me again. When his fist was raised above his head something struck him, and he gave a groan and fell in a heap before me. I looked around. A man was standing near us, leaning on his rifle. “There, there, Sonny,” he said to me, “don’t be afraid. I ain’t a-goin’ to hurt yer.”

20” x 24” oil on canvas. Signed lower right. $15,000-25,000 Provenance: Certification and Registration Certificate included. Private Collection, New York, NY. About the Artist Having performed as an acrobat in his native country of Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst seemed to make a smooth transition into a successful rodeo rider once he came to the U.S. at the age of 19. He served in the Cavalry, riding the Mexican border, then as a mounted police officer in NYC. He moved to CA in 1944, where he translated his deep love for horses into an art career, depicting the varied aspects of “life in the saddle”. Wieghorst was admired by a number of famous people, including Senator Barry Goldwater, President Reagan, and John Wayne, who even featured him in a few small roles in a couple of his films. About the Painting This painting was painted while Wieghorst was in NYC. The department didn’t typically allow their officers to hold “second jobs” but seemed to turn a blind eye to his selling his paintings through a gallery named the “Hal of Art”. “Objection” was sold from that gallery to the current owners in 1946. 203

*Wooly Chaps became popular in the late 1800s, mostly in the Northern plains, and mostly because of the need for additional protection in the cold and wet weather. Made with “hair on hide” to repel the rain and snow more efficiently, they were made from a variety of fur and hair, including buffalo, bear and the highly prized Angora goat hair. Soon, they gained popularity, not only with the Cowboys, but in the Wild West show arenas, and the showier, the better! 204

*George Kovach grew up admiring and studying the techniques of the Hudson River Artists. He studied & graduated from the Miami Art Institute where he began to express & develop his own style of painting. Shortly afterward, George made Texas his adopted home, & after painting a thousand miles of country roads, windmills, oil derricks, oak trees, millions of blue bonnets and Indian Paintbrush, Kovach paintings now speak for themselves. George always says that tenacity and determination are best friends to one’s talent. 697

707 Arrow Top Knot (Apis-Poch-Kinnaiee) 49” x 28” Pikuni Blackfoot pictograph Laid on removable board. Conserved & framed to museum standards. Glyph signature upper right. $10,000-15,000 Picture writings & picture warrior stories (pictographs) originated from ancient petroglyphs. From these, pictographs evolved as a way to document important occurrences in a tribe’s or individual’s existence. Early on, pictograph paintings were done on buffalo hide, hide tipi covers, tipi liners & other items & the earliest known Blackfeet paintings date back to the 1830s. Paintings on elk hide, deer hide, cow hide, paper & canvas came along a little later. These were traditionally done by warriors of the Blackfeet tribes as a “tribal war record”, thus, considered “war art”. Only warriors who had a record of bravery &/or heroism were allowed by their peers to record their pictographic war exploits. Arrow Top Knot is one of the few known pictographic artists from the turn of the 20th century & each of his completed pieces are signed with his “glyph”, as is our 2020 featured piece. Glacier National Park was officially established as America’s 10th “National Park” in May of 1910. The Great Northern Railway worked hard to establish a stream of visitors by not only making it accessible by rail, but involving itself in the building of hotels, chalets & walking & riding trails. At the railway’s helm was a man named Louis Warren Hill, Sr., who took a personal interest in developing the area. He also had a deep love & respect for the Blackfeet & their artwork, which resulted in the commissioning of a number of pictograph canvas panels for the walls of the hotels. These commissions were meant to preserve the iconic cultural & historic war records of the Blackfeet. Dozens of these canvases were hung in the various hotels & each one included a printed legend explaining the story which unfolded on each unique canvas. 707 However, as times changed, so did the taste of the décor. So, in the 1950s, most of the Blackfeet panels were removed & replaced with Cowboy themed paintings. Unfortunately, many of the original pictographs were discarded or destroyed, but some were saved & placed into the Louis W Hill, Sr. collection of Native Art. Today, the existence of a very few is due to some important Museums stepping forward, determined to preserve these artifacts. These include the Montana Historical Society, the Glenbow Museum (Calgary) & The Royal British Columbian Museum (Alberta). 100 years after these were made, Fighting Bear Antiques (Jackson, WY) has acquired some of these rare works of art which were originally saved by Louis Hill, Sr. Not only have they retained their original beauty, but these 100+ year old war records have become recognized as significant historical & cultural records of the Blackfeet tribes. Terry & Claudia Winchell, owners of Fighting Bear Antiques, have now made this spectacular piece available to the public, exclusively through March in Montana. To honor the importance of this sale, they will be donating a generous portion of the proceeds to Native American Jump Start, a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Founded in 2004, their Mission Statement is as follows: The Mission of Native American Jump Start is to provide opportunities for growth & success for Native American individuals & families through education & employment. We are working to empower native youth & adults to create more enriched lives for themselves & their families while respecting diversity & traditional values.

Marjorie Reed began her art training at a very early age, specifically, age 3. Her Father was a commercial artist and illustrator for Disney, and she soon became an “assistant” to him, as she showed much artistic talent. Her first loves were the outdoors and horses. She studied at the Chouinard Art School, then took lessons under Jack W. Smith, a renowned landscape painter. Smith encouraged her to “roam the countryside” which was made easier by her friendship with a retired stagecoach driver who steered her visions toward depicting, and sometimes romanticizing, the various stage routes and stops. The colorful style she developed over a long and successful career is easily recognized by both new and seasoned collectors. 721 222
