It takes plae every year in Costa Rica. The Coffee Bowl started with a group of tennis players at the Costa Rica Country Club in 1965. They formed a committee that has worked together to make the tournament the most prestigious international tennis event of its kind. Since the beginning of the tournament, most participants have received economic help from different international supporters (top players and dedicated coaches). Besides, it would not be posible to organize the Coffee Bowl without the invaluable assistance of corporate sponsors such as Coca Cola, Café Britt and Citibank among others. The Coffee Bowl is part of a junior circuit supported by the tennis federations of many rich countries. The Costa Rican Coffee Bowl tournament is by far the oldest junior tournament in Latin America. Every year, it receives entries from more tan 50 countries. In 2012, it had the best record, achieving 56 countries. The tennis tournament usually filled the stadium court. In fact, the Coffee Bowl hado ver 3.000 spectators each day in 2012. Those games were televised at night.

People could say that the Magón National prize for Culture is a kind Pulitzer in Costa Rica. It`s a national honor given to an entire lifetime of cultural contibutions. Described by the Culture Ministry as “the highest recognition awarded by the nation of Costa Roca “, this time the Magón Prize went to a 70 year-old woman, Julieta Dobles Izaguirre. Ms. Dobles studied philology and linguistics at the University of Costa Rica, where she also taught biiology. She earned a master`s degree in American literatura. Her greatest passion, though, is poetry. Dobles Izaguirre is the autor of several books, including “Costa Rica Day by Day”, “ Furtive Leaves”, and the road poem, “A Journey Too Blue”. She is currently working on a new manuscript, “Traps of Time”. Dobles Izaguirre Says, “My mainsource of inspiration is life”. My poetry is the poetry of experience. I do not write anything that has not been lived” So it seems that Dobles Izaguirre has lived well. A current great example of Costa Rican music is a group of three skillful artista called Editus. Their songs are a fusión of modern music with jazz, classical music and new age. Such beautiful and adored music led them to grab three Grammys wich made them the only band in the history of Costa Rica to do so. In the late 1980`s, some local artists and bands bécame famous for having their own style and original material, such as José Capmany, Café con Leche and Inconsciente Colectivo. Most of them had fans from outside of Costa Rica. Besides, a few years ago a popular Latin genre was developed and called Chiqui-chiqui (a mixture of merengue, cumbia and other Latin rhythms along with afro-pop influences). This genre was led by bands such as Los Hicsos and La Banda which were very popular. Moreover , from the later 90`s to the present, a newer local rock style has emerged. This style has been led by bands such as Gandhi, Evolución, Tango India, Suite doble, Alma Bohemia and Kadeho. All of them have been accepted positively by Costa Rican Young people. According to Costa rican meals, one would certainly have to talk about black beans and rice. This simple standard dish, often referred to as “comida típica”, is the backbone of Costa Rican cuisine. While many of the dishes are still prepared with oil high in saturated fats, Costa Rican food is generally quite healthy. Often served with aggod portion of vegetables or fruits, the meals are very well rounded and generally high in fiber. 4 cups of fresh corn 2 – 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp. Oregano ¼ cup of milk or wáter 1 tsp. Of salt Oil
PREPARATION: Mix everything ( except the oil) in a blender until smooth. Pour into a bowl and warm oil in a metal pan on médium-high heat. Scoop out two spoonfuls of the mixture into the pan and spread into a circle like pancakes. Slightly, lower heat and let it Brown lightly (about two minutes). Flip it over and cook till golden. Put aside on a plate covered with a towel to keep warm. Corn pancakes are great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a side dish. Serve them with sour crea mor any choice of toppings. It´s easy and tasty. There are two versions of “chorreadas”, the sweet one and the cheese one. Sweet versión: omit the garlic and oregano. Add four tablespoons of sweetener or a ¼ cup pf sugar. In Costa Rica when a death occurs, friends and relatives are notified by telephone, through obituaries in the newspapers or by radio. Mourners (people who go to funeral) attend aceremony called a “viewing” at the house of the deceased or a funeral parlor. Funerals are usually held the day following the death. After the church service, mourners wearing black accompany the deceased`s family to the cementery. Catholic people usually have a memorial ceremony called a “novenario” (it includes praying rosaries at home and/or at a church) for the following nine days. According to the mourners, this tradition relieves the dead person, and prayers can help the soul of the deceased “to gain entrance into de kingdom of God”. During the “novenario” after the rosary finishes, visitors are served coffee or refresments and some homemade pastries. On the ninth day, a mass is offered and some rosaries are praved. Also, mourners always receive a “recordatorio” which is a picture of the dead person. Then, a mass is carried out every month. After a year has passed, some families make a public announcement about a memorial mass. The biggest threat to life on Earth comes from global warming. Rich industrializad countries have been burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas for about 150 years, pumping out vast quantities of carbón dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. CO2 traps heat from the sun and causes the Earth and the atmosphere to get warmwr. This is called the greenhouse effect, and the problema has worsened because of deforestation. The high level of carbon emissions in the atmosphere lead to climate changes. For example, the oceans an seas are gretting warmer and the polar caps are melting. This causes the levels of the seas to rise, which threatens low coastal regions an islands. Furthermore, the weather is becoming more unpredictable, with severe storms (heavy rains, strong winds, etc.) and unexpected sea waves and droughts (a long period of weather ehich is too dry). Another effect of global warming is a rise in the number of endangered species. Many animals and plants could become extinct if their habit is altered. The majority of scientists agree that there is an urgent need to cut carbón emissions across the world. In order to reduce the effects of global warming, people need to develop and use different sources of energy around the world. CAHUITA NATIONAL PARK
The immense protected reef off the coast is home to 35 species of coral which in turn sustain a variety of marine species , such as barracudas , urchins, octopi, crustaceans, over 125 species of fish and a varriety of sharks. From February to April it is the best time for viewing underwater hábitats. On land, Cahuita National Park is equal in size to its marine counterpart. The wildlife includes several types of monkeys, rodents and reptiles. Birdlife is also plentiful, herons, toucans, macaws and parrots are abundant. The leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles use the park´s beaches to lay their eggs. Both of the beaches that line the park are made of lovely White sand. However, swimming is dangerous at certain locations, though signs warn visitors of the dangers. Because of the park´s proximity to the villaje of Cahuita, facilities and roads are well developed. Kelly Creek, south of Cahuita, provides an Access point to those who choose to enter the park on foot. Punta Vargas, at the park´s southern end, is preferred by those staying in Puerto Viejo or anywhere south of the park. TICOS ABROAD VOTED USING PAPER BALLOTS
Fort he 2014 Presidential Elections, the Supreme Elections Tribunal (TSE) postponed the use elecronic devices for Costa Rican citizens living abroad to cast their votes, as there was not enough time to conduct required tests with the ultra-book computers before election day. Nearly 13.000 Ticos who registered to vote from abroad did so using the same presidential ballots that voters used in Costa Rica, the TSE confirmed. The TSE intended to conduct at least six simulated voting tests with the devises at certain embassies to ensure that the e-voting plan would work as planned. But according to current embassy schedules, there was only time to perform two simulation in January. The TSE Election Registry Director said that the change did not involve any budget or major logistical changes, since the TSE had enough ballots, as well as all the required material and documentation for Ticos registered abroad. The TSE personnel were appointed to take the voting materials to each country as planned, and they oversaw the voting at 50 of the 61 poll centers located at Costa Rican embassies and consulates. Poll centers opened from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (local time), a Schedule selected to ease the process in the 42 countries where Ticos registered to cast their votes. Despite the time difference, the results of those votes were not disclosed before 6.00 p.m. (Costa Rica time), as stipulated by Article 191 of the country´s Electoral Code. At a very young age, Jamie Oliver is now an extremely successful and a well-known chef, with his own acclaimed restaurant in the center of London. He has made five TV series, written several books, and still does around twenty live shows a year. He doesn´t have much free time. How did he make it? Well, his rise to fane and fortune came early and swiftly. By the age of eight, he had already started cooking at his parent´s pub. It was an easy way to make a bit of pocket Money. After two years at a catering college and some time spend in France, he started working in restaurants. He worked under three famous chefs before he was spotted by a TV producer at 21, and his life changed. Even though he had very Little experience he had a great deal of enthusiasm for cooking, and he acted well in front of the camera. His first TV program featured him going around London on his scooter buying ingredients and cooking for his friends, all to a rock and roll sound track. His recipes were simple ,so his récipes didn´t involve complicated cooking techniques . Jamie Oliver used plenty of fresh ingredients and herbs, too. Adapted from New Headway Student Book
