Normal values and repeatibility of bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) with Microperimeter Mp-1.

Objective/Purpose: To evaluate age-stratified normal bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) and repeatability using MP-1 microperimetry.

Materials/Patients: 100 eyes of 100 healthy volunteers (age range: 20-80 years). All patients underwent a fixation test by MP-1 microperimeter (Nidek Technologies).

Methods: All subjects had a logMAR acuity ≤ 0.0 without ocular pathologies on a complete ophthalmological examination.

Fixation stability was quantified by calculating the BCEA obtained during a 30 second fixation test. A 2° red cross was used as fixation target. BCEA (deg2) was normalized by logarithmic transformation (Shapiro-Wilk test, p<0.05). Statistical analysis was performed using linear regression analysis and Pearson’s correlation for comparisons. All patients were then stratified by decade of life and unpaired t-test was performed between the groups. Statistical significance was set at P <0.05.

Results and Conclusion: Mean BCEA ( 50.65± 17.76 years) in all patients was 0.45 ± 0.51 deg2 . There was a positive relationship between age and logBCEA (Pearson: r=0.32, P=0.001). Linear regression analysis showed a significant increase in logBCEA with increasing age ( P=0.001). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) calculated in the 3 standard deviation were 0.69 (-0.03, +0.93) in the first standard deviation, 0.68 (-0.06, +0.93) and 0.57 (-0.43, +0.90). In conclusion, this is the first study that reported a database for BCEA and the influence with age. Moreover the evaluation of BCEA has good test-retest reliability.
