Norwegian Spirit Undergoes EUR 90 Million Renovation

Cruise vessel Norwegian Spirit has undergone a comprehensive renovation as part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Edge programme. The vessel entered drydock in Marseille, France on 2 January 2020 for a nearly 40-day renovation. Following the EUR 90 million refit, the vessel now features additional staterooms and fourteen new venues such as restaurants, lounges, and the adults-only retreat Spice H2O. Norwegian Spirit set sail out of dry dock in February 2020. Her itinerary will include ten new destinations, including Bali (Celun Bawang), Jakarta, and Surabaya, Indonesia; Beppu, Kumamoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo, Japan; Taipei (Keelung) Taiwan; and Yangon, Myanmar.

Forum’s ROV to Support Amundsen Science’s Arctic Research

Forum Energy Technologies has secured an order from Amundsen Science at Université Laval in Canada to supply a light work-class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to support its Arctic scientific research activities. The vehicle will be installed on board research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen. Forum’s Sub-Atlantic Comanche ROV system has a high thrust-to-drag ratio, enabling it to operate in strong currents. It is equipped with two seven-function manipulator arms, precision positioning and navigation systems, cameras, lighting, and sonars for low visibility operations. The new Comanche ROV will replace the organisation’s current Super Mohawk ROV, which was also supplied by Forum, and will be delivered in the first quarter of this year.

Inmarsat’s Launches GX5 Next Generation Satellite

Mobile satellite communications specialist Inmarsat has confirmed the successful launch of GX5. It is the fifth satellite in the Global Xpress (GX) fleet delivering Fleet Xpress high-speed maritime broadband services. The satellite was lifted into orbit by an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA-3) in Kourou, French Guiana. GX5 is scheduled to enter commercial service in early 2020 and deliver additional, focused broadband capacity over Europe and the Middle East that will amount to more than the existing four satellites in the worldwide Global Xpress network (GX1-GX4) combined.

Keel Laying Ceremony for New Electric Ferry

Holland Shipyards Group has held the keel laying ceremony for Brevik Fergeselskap’s new electric ferry. The vessel, the first fully electric ferry for Brevik Fergeselskap, will operate within the waters of Eidangerfjorden. The ferry service connects Brevik with Sandøya and Bjørkøya. The new electric ferry, with a length of 42m and a width of 11m, has the capacity to transport 98 persons and sixteen vehicles. It is completely emission-free and entirely powered by battery power (1,300kWh). In addition to electric propulsion, another unique feature is a TES (thermal energy storage) system to provide heat. The vessel is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2020.

IADC Seminar on Dredging & Reclamation

The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) is organising the International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation for the 60 th time. This upcoming event will be held from 8 - 12 June 2020 at, and in cooperation with, the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands. The seminar is aimed at all stakeholders, from newcomers in the field of dredging to higher-level consultants, technical and non-technical professionals, advisors at port and harbour authorities, offshore companies, and other organisations that execute dredging projects. The programme includes lectures by dredging experts, as well as activities outside the classroom such as a site visit to a dredging yard.

Finnlines Ships Go Green with Wärtsilä Hybrid Systems

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply its Hybrid Power Conversion system for three new RoRo ferries being built at the Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China for Finnlines. The hybrid solution, which includes a 5,000kWh energy storage system, will enable these ships to operate with zero emissions while in port, and to meet the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Green Plus class notation. They will also have Ice Class classification 1A Super. “These new ferries will be among the most environmentally-sustainable ships of their type”, says Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO of Finnlines. Wärtsilä’s equipment, which also includes in-line shaft generators, power take-off/take in converters, and transformers, is scheduled for delivery to the yard in the second half of 2020.

Alphatron Supplies Customised AlphaBridge

Alphatron Marine Noord has received the order for an AlphaBridge on TSHD Yed Prior owned by Spaansen. Yed Prior is a dry cargo ship called Gerd that is being converted into a gravel hopper by Spaansen. The AlphaBridge has been assembled in collaboration with the vessel’s captain. This has resulted in a customised bridge, where all instruments are optimised for navigation and dredging activities. “We are convinced that our unique Alphabridge concept with two adapted so-called Tugboat consoles are the right set-up for this ship conversion”, comments Maerten van Uggelen, Alphatron Marine Noord Sales Manager.

Montreal Gateway Terminals Orders Four Liebherr Ship to Shore Container Cranes

Liebherr Container Cranes and Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGT) have signed a contract for the supply of four Ship to Shore (STS) container cranes to the Cast Container Terminal in Montreal, Canada. The cranes will be delivered in 2021. The Port of Montreal has experienced increased container traffic for a number of years and forecasts show that this trend will continue. The new cranes will significantly improve the operational capacity of the Cast Container Terminal. They have a safe working load of 65t under twin lift spreader, with an outreach of 55.38m, a span of 15.24m and a back reach of 18.29m.

Fincantieri Delivers First Cruise Ship to Virgin Voyages

Fincantieri has delivered Scarlet Lady, the first of four cruise vessels for new cruise operator Virgin Voyages, which is part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. Scarlet Lady weighs about 110,000 gross tons and is 278 meters long and 38 meters wide. Her sister ship Valiant Lady is currently under construction and will be delivered in 2021, while the still unnamed third and the fourth vessels will set sail in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The vessels can each accommodate 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Each vessel will feature alternative technologies that reduce the vessels’ overall environmental impact, such as a scrubber system, led lights and an energy production system that uses the diesel engine’s waste heat.
