SEOUL PUBLIC MEGABANG 2018 Master degree thesis Presented at Venice Biennale 2019 Research on Seoul’s public space history and behaviours, public space design proposal, Seoul, South Korea Workgroup: Arch. Marco Lagamba, Arch. Samah El Falahi, Prof. Michele Bonino, Studio MOTOelastico
Initially Seoul’s social public space lied in the Madang, the courtyard of the traditional Hanok houses, but after the economic boom, the vertical city swallowed these claustral spaces. The city has therefore responded to this lack of social spaces with the Bangs fulfilling the task of living room. The question is: “Is this need for space confinement and limitation also evident in city public spaces?” Are there any social public spaces in Seoul? Formerly Seoul’s social public space lied in the “Madang”, a courtyard in the middle of the traditional Korean homes named “Hanok”. Besides the public space of the city has always been a place where behaviors were heavily controlled by the authority. After the economic and demographic boom of Seoul, the vertical city swallowed these claustral spaces, replacing it with tall and dense skyscrapers. The city has therefore responded this lack of social spaces with the creation of “Bangs”, multifunctional paid rooms scattered across the city, fulfilling the task of a living room, a social space confined and away from the intrusive and always watchful eyes of the city. 4
The question, then, arises: Is this need for space confinement and limitation also evident in city public spaces? Through an accurate on-field analysis, these “rooms” were identified in the city and the appropriation’s methods recognized. At the end, the dialectical process that involved the city has found a synthesis in a project of these areas. The results could be summarized in three different design method experiments. The first approach was to probe and rethink the nature of the limit, that is to characterize the space based on the definition of the border itself, with its variables. (What is the nature of the limit?) In the second instance we analyzed which can be the behaviors, commonly accepted and belonging to Korean culture, that can convey the conquest of space, ergo its sociable connotation. An attempt was therefore made to favor the shifting of the typical behaviors of confined spaces within the public space (which behaviors generate a conquest?) Finally an attempt was made based on the manifestation of the limit, bringing confined social spaces into the public space, and investigating the methods through which public and social space can coexist on the same level, or on different levels. (how do spaces coexist?)

The project aim was to re-use the old residence of vinedresser families and transform it into a 4 star hotel overlooking the Langhe territory, now UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site, and birthplace of the great wine Barolo. The intervention was focused on the two upper floors of the historical building, the 1000 sqm roof terrace and the transformation of the staircase linking the Fondazione Mirafiore with hotel rooms.

RAW 2017 Product Design and Craft for Myricae Myricae by Arch. Marco Lagamba, Arch. Samah El Falahi
The realization of those ring starts from a brass disk, which, only through the use of brute force, are bent, cutted and shaped. In fact it is bent cold, hammered on a mold that takes the shape of the finger, and finally finished. This bending system generates micro-cracks in the material, making it imperfect, and at the same time giving it a unique and always different texture. Hammer, angle grinder, band saw are not the typical tools of the jeweler. It’s rough but at the same time delicate and precious. It takes a lot of love and a lot of brute force to make this ring. 28
RAW 2017 Product Design and Craft for Myricae Myricae by Arch. Marco Lagamba, Arch. Samah El Falahi
“If people were meant to pop out bed, we’d all sleep in toasters.”
(Garfield)
Try to think of the bed not as a piece of furniture but as a spatial element. In fact, in addition to its basic function, it also hosts various alternative behaviors such as watching movies, reading, studying, etc. The bed thus becomes a platform for living, to live. The Living Platform is an infrastructure for relaxation, which can be modified according to the user’s needs. Not just a bed but a changeable space that can be conquered by the user, who can adapt it to his needs and behaviours. 29
BOUNDARIES 2018 Product Design and Craft for Myricae Myricae by Arch. Marco Lagamba, Arch. Samah El Falahi
Boundaries is a series of nylon 3d printed rings. Their simple and minimal forms have been designed to remember and emphasize the importance of lines, such as significant traits, borders, simple elements but with a great power to generate shapes and spaces.

H/ORTUS 2019 Product Design and Craft for Myricae Myricae by Arch. Marco Lagamba, Arch. Samah El Falahi
H/Ortus is a propagation station designed for all those who want to try their hand in the world of home gardening but who do not have enough space. In fact, H/Ortus allows to preserve and cure cuttings in a comfortable and functional way, inside an element with a minimal and elegant design. So H/ortus is not only a functional element but also an element of furniture that will characterize your home in a unique way. Thanks to the handle the Propagation Station can be moved easily, moreover the same handle can be used as a support for the plants themselves. H/Ortus is entirely handmade, in walnut and steel with glass test tubes, therefore completely recyclable. 31
