LOCATION THE ORIGINAL PLAN OF THE ABERDEEN SQUARE HAS MADE IT FUNCIONS MORE AS A PASSAGE THAN A PUBLIC SPACE. BY ADDING THE TOILET AT ONE END, AN ENTRANCE IS DEFINED AND MAKE THE SPACE MORE EMBRACING.

SCENERY OF THE COURTYARD CAN BE ENJOYED FROM ALL SIDES. THE SUBTLETY OF THE OPENINGS SUGGESTED A BALANCE BETWEEN OPENNESS AND PRIVACY. USER WOULD FEEL PROTECTED INSIDE AND THIS PROVIDES A RELIEVEMENT FROM THE BUSY CITY WHEN GOING TO THE TOILET. PEEPING INTO THE CUBICLE IS AVOIDED BY ADDING AN EXTRA LAYER OF BRICKS.

AFTER ANALYSING THE FIRST 3 SCHEMES, I FOUND OUT THAT THE DESIGNS OF THE STAIRS ARE INEFFICIENT IN BRINGING CROSS VENTILATION TO THE CARPARK AND THERE ARE LARGE OPEN SPACE THAT ARE UNDEFINED.

ARCH 2058 ARCHITECTURAL HISTOR Y AND THEOR Y 1: MODERN ARCHITECTURE ASSIGNMENT 2 – MAPPING MODERN ARCHITECTURE
Constructed from 1952 to 1981, the 40-acre Golden Lane Estate, located in Goswell Road, London, became the representation for post-war revival; it was fundamentally a model for social unification and city lifestyles. The style of the independent buildings, including Crescent House, the maisonette blocks, and Great Arthur House, have evolved into a Brutalism form, comparable to the Barbican Estate. The most evident similarity is the observable concrete Brutalist facades, although the surfaces of the maisonette buildings are coated with paint to eliminate the risk of staining. To manifest a stronger structure, the Crescent House was built to provide high density whereas the Great Arthur House was meant to contribute to a vertical prominence, making it the tallest residential tower in London during the 19th century. In comparison to the Barbican, Golden Lane holds public facilities, like an art gallery, concert hall, theatre, gymnasium, and swimming pool. However, the Barbican is still denser, and the Golden Lane lacks the infamous generation of the multi-level podiums. The courtyard development is comparable to the Barbican, where it's u-shape surrounds various buildings. Similar criticisms hover over the Golden Lane due to its indistinguishable qualities to the Barbican.

Constructed from 1890 to 1900, the 5-acre Boundary Estate holds the oldest council estate in the world; despite the ancient form, it's architectural design is quite distinctive. The countless other buildings there have honorable curves and ornamentations. From that, the Arnold Circus coils out from the structure and expands with gardens and various outdoor platforms; the shape of the circus gives a flexible space for events. Just like the Barbican Estate, the community emits a lively spirit due to the numerous public facilities and vast community. There weren't concerns about the general outlook or aesthetics of the materials and facades, however, many residents have complained about the lack of the fundamental services that the estate provides. Public facilities like bathrooms have been rated terrible. Also, the Estate was designed for the sole purpose of housing the poor. As time has passed, the rent prices soared and dwellers were forced to move eastwards, which opposed the original idea of construction. Besides the conflicts, the Boundary Estate has been an inspiration for writers because the bricks that have been used for the buildings hold so much history because they have been conserved since the late 1800s. Many enjoy the minimal changes that have occured, like the bandstand that has created many memories for long time residents.

The Barbican Estate, constructed in 1965 and completed in 1982, was designed by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon who utilized the idea of Brutalism to represent the restoration of Central London. Prior to World War II, the area was known as the Base Court which functioned as a military base, and was restored with Willoughby House. This ward was subsequently ruined in the war and regenerated as a 35-acre residential estate. To incorporate the improvement of technology into the design, the three architects proposed a more contemporary style of urban planning thus constructing Europe’s tallest residential buildings and opulent housing. The entire estate is also composed of 3 towers, 13 patios, an arts venue, a public library, 2 schools, and a museum. The layout of the plan enables the inhabitants to travel without any obstruction; the linkage of all the roads circulate underneath an elevated platform, which acts as the ground level to segregate pedestrians and vehicles. Additionally, an engineered improvement to diminish the rumbling of the underground trains also cooperates with the detachment of the ground levels. The estate’s identity is further exhibited through the development of greenery to integrate visual originality as well as a sense of solitude throughout the region. It also generates a balance between the liveliness and serene sections of the city. Another evident intention is the exposure of concrete to emphasize an unfinished and careless impression to implicitly convey a territory of great significance.

Mixed reviews have been expressed from the residents; some praise the intelligent lifestyle and the unique landscaping that shapes its distinction from other estates. Conversely, others criticise the unorganized style and its vulnerability to become a mess. In either case, the overall outlook of the area is definitely ameliorated in terms of aesthetics.
