LES CLEFS D’OR STORY IN JUNE Water Puppet Show

The Vietnamese art of water puppetry is a genuinely cultural experience that cannot be missed whilst in Hanoi. Water puppet shows are thought to have originated from the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam in the 11th century. The very first Vietnamese puppet shows weren't just for the entertainment of villagers and farmers – the shows were believed also to be a medium to send people’s wishes to the spirits for luck, health and abundant harvests. Nowadays, there are several theaters in Hanoi, where tourists can watch this uniquely Vietnamese performance. Puppets move fitfully along the water's surface, controlled by a group of puppet masters hiding behind the scenes. Musicians on either side of the pool provide vocals and music with traditional instruments. The stage and puppets are awash in vivid colors; and a foggy mist over the water add to the mystery.
