PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO BY MARCOS REIS
I am a 24 years old student of Architecture and Urbanism at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in Brazil. All my life was strongly influenced by art and after some experiences with the theater, painting and writing, I chose the photography to express myself. My main interest is to talk about the dynamics in the urban life and relate this to the kind of city we live today. My work can be found in my page on 500px or Vimeo.
CONTRACIDADE Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous city in Brazil. Looking through the history, you can see that the way the city is builded shows all the contradictions and contrasts of the brazilian society. Walking by the streets, it is visible how the public space has tenuous divisions for each social class. The same place where in the weekends has a religious use, during the week can be a nice place to drink some beer. The places which should represent the democracy by day, at night has homeless people sleeping. Large squares are empty when small spaces are full of people runing to somewhere. Nature against architecture. Caos and order side by side. This images from Rio are not in the postcards. You have to know and live the city to understand it. Contracidade was my first personal project as the final work for the course of photography. The name is a mix of the words “contrast” and “city”.
PLURAL PLACES The public space it is not just an empty area in the middle of the city. It is the use that people give to that place. In the public space you can see the real urban life happening and how the meaning of this place changes with every culture. There is a lot of background information behind of a simple use of a square or park. How it changes with the climate of the country, or the day of the week, or the traddition of a nation. In this project, made when I was doing my exchange in Ireland, I searched how the public space is differently used in each country I visited in Europe. The idea was to run from the touristic places but look for the local people and their habits.
OLIMPÍADAS DA EXCLUSÃO
Following the machines which was demolishing houses and the residents who left the place where they were born against their will, I tryed to register the reality of many of people who was targets of communities removals in Rio de Janeiro before the Olympic Games of 2016. These photos were taken in Vila Autódromo. Originally a fisherman’s village placed at the side of the Olympic village. The official justification of the removal of many houses was to construct a highway to better conect the olimpic village to the city. To pressure the residents who did’nt accept the proposal made by the mayor at the time, the empty houses were demolished only partially so the scenario was of a place in the middle of a war.
OTHER WORKS
DESAFOGAR Desafogar is a short film directed by me made after finished my course of Direction of Photography. It was all made with students of cinema and theater and filmed in Rio. Desafogar is a portrait of how the routine can constrain you and shape your lifestyle and even forbid you to think about it. The film is now in pos-production and should be released this year. you can watch a teaser clicking in the left image.
EU ESTOU AQUI O QUE QUE HÁ?
Women have always been a fundamental part of the history of samba. But the sexism structural in society has hidden many characters for public knowledge. “Eu estou aqui o que que há?” is a documentary about this women, and how be a woman was a difficulty for them even being responsably for great moments in music and popular culture. The film has the participation of very famous female samba singers as Leci Brandão, Teresa Cristina, Dona Ivone Lara, Mart’nália, Áurea Martins, Luisa Dionísio and also some important women unkown by the the public as Dona Miriam, the first woman producer in Brazil. This film still being filmed and must be released next year.
CAFEZIM
As an exercise to improve my photography skills in cinema, I created the project named “Cafezim. It is nothing but the same idea, the process of making coffee, but using different techniques of photography and trying to remake the script playing with comic situations about life itself. The project has a total of 5 episodes and each one has a different references. The last one is a design motion made with illustrations drawn by me. I think this project is interesting to register the evolution of my skills during time. You can watch the episodes of Cafezim by clicking on the images.
