Final Submission

Concept I chose to design 3 non-fictional novels all relating to the same theme of the navy, anchors, love and typographic layouts. All novels will be a hard cover finish to be durable.

Typography For each novel I decided to use a differen’t style of typography to suite each book along with the differing colourings between the books. While still sticking to the same type of style so the books link together to form a series of 3 novels.

Colour Scheme I have decided to design the book jackets using two black covers for the first two novels in the series while the last novel in the series is a bright yellow to identify the last series in the novel. And I also believe these colours have strong colleration to the titles of these books. I have also used these colours simply to make them look satisfying to the eye. I have used the black background on the first two covers to bring out the titles and objects in the foreground.

How They Were Created To design these novels I started off sketching 3 designs, then refining these till I was satisfied. Which I think was a useful process. I then scanned them and opened them into illustrator and used the pen tool to outline every little aspect to refine them and digitalize them. To create diverse typographic layouts for each book cover.

Design Rationale My three books in the series are called “When will the day come that he sails”, “Send my love over to the navy ship” & “Tie yourself to the mast my friend and the ship will sail”. These books are not based on novels that are already made, I decided to start from scratch and create my own novels. I also wanted to design them myself so I could show what I could do from the ideas in my head and putting them onto paper and then digitilized through the use of illustrator. When creating these jackets I have really tried to make them look interesting and cool while also linking them together through the same themes and typographic layout. In order to demonstrate the skills I have learnt throughout the semester I have fully refined the designs by old school pencil and paper and from scratch. The hand created designs had then been taken to illustrator to be edited, vectorized and refined digitally. I have chosen to design the covers as hard cover novels.
