SHE’S greeted thousands of children aboard countless school bus runs over the years but now the Tablelands’ most favourite and recognisable driver has closed the doors on a career that has spanned more than three decades.

Deciding it’s time to retire Joan Comino or the ‘bus lady’ as she is affectionately known across the region drove her final Rangeview route a few days ago.

However, over the next few weeks the much-loved Tablelands resident will still spend time training and familiarising the incoming driver on the bus run she’s driven since first buying the business back in July 1991.

While the decision is bittersweet Ms Comino felt now is the right time to take a back seat to the region’s next generation of upcoming drivers.

“I have loved doing the driving and feel that keeping in touch with the youth of today has ensured that I have maintained a younger attitude,” Joan told The Express.

“We sold our runs to the present owners, the Emerson family in 1997 and I have enjoyed working with them – I feel that I couldn’t have asked for better bosses.

“Ernie (partner) and I have

actually had a couple of goes at retirement. After we sold the buses we travelled around Australia for a few months, twice, and enjoyed being nomads.

“However, on our return there always seemed to be a need for a bus driver so we would drive again.

“This time around though – the time is right.”

After three decades behind the wheel Joan said a runaway chook takes the cake as one of her more memorable stories.

“School bus drivers often say ‘I could write a book of all the experiences we have and stories that we are told over the years’, and that is true,” Ms Comino reflected.

“One of my favourite stories to tell is the day we had a chook travel on the bus to school with us.

“Our chooks used to have free reign of our property, and one morning Ernie had left the door to my bus open after he had done the safety checks - an inquisitive hen decided to then have a look around.

“The first boy boarded the bus but turned straight around to tell me there was a chook on the bus.

“It proved quite a funny trip.”

The friendly face admitted she’ll have mixed emotions when school goes back in a few days’ time and she isn’t the one picking students up.

“I have really enjoyed working with children for a large part of my working life,” she said.

“It will definitely be a strange feeling knowing school’s gone back and I haven’t taken any children to school.

“I’ve loved every bit of it though and want to thank everyone for such a wonderful career.”

Joan’s partner Ernie, also drove local bus services up until 2014.

T imminent arrival of fifteen new police o cers to the ar orth, including si on the Tablelands, is welcome news for the community.

The new o cers graduated last week after completing their training at the orth ueensland cademy in Townsville and O ley olice cademy in risbane. ith a diverse range of career backgrounds, the new constables have spent the past si months training for their new roles as police officers.

They will now complete months of competencybased training in the field under the guidance of accredited field training o cers, which sees them assessed on their management of a range of real-world policing scenarios.

Inspector tephen ersley said the communities of uranda, areeba and therton will benefit from the diverse range of life e periences of the new o cers.

“The Tablelands atrol roup and the ar orth egion are great places for new o cers to learn and grow within the service,” Inspector ersley said.

Their allocation to the Tableland atrol roup brings the number of constables in the field training program to nine, with a further increase e pected in eptember.

Fire and brazen crime prompts call for urgent public meeting THE calls for an urgent public meeting or rally to be convened to address growing concerns about juvenile and youth offending in areeba and The Tablelands have increased in the wake of a braz en crime at a local business just minutes after it opened its doors for morning trading.

The incident comes just days after local business, P erformance otors, was guttered by a terrible fire in the early hours of last Tuesday morning.

F antasy Tails, a pet shop business on yrnes t in areeba was just minutes into its morning trade when around 9.50a m last Thursday two juveniles possibly one female and one male fled the premise with an aluminum reflector dome, in simple terms, a lamp that k eeps reptiles, like liz ards, warm in their tank s.

It’s understood the duo also snatched an employee’s wallet as he was busily cleaning and feeding pets at the back of the store.

Co-owner of F antasy Tails, Jared Y ates said he along with fellow business owners and local community members would strongly welcome the opportunity to talk with ayor ngela Toppin and local state s, ynthia ui and Shane K nuth in a public forum to have their concerns collectively heard and addressed.

“To literally have items stolen from the shop just mo-

ments after we opened for the morning is very disappointing,” r ates said.

“This particular issue has been going on far too much recently, particularly on the back of the terrible fire – enough is enough.

“I would love the opportunity to voice my concerns at a public meeting or rally where I and other business owners can talk with people who are in a position to help us, like the tate s and the like.

“I want to know that when I come into work in the morning my business is not going to be subject to thefts, robberies or for us to be victims of juvenile crimes.” ook ynthia ui confirmed she had raised juvenile and youth offending with senior colleagues but stopped short of confirming that she, herself, would table such a meeting.

“Every Q ueenslander deserves to be safe at home and at work,” s ui told The Express. “ fter the recent incidents involving young people in our community, I have spoke n with outh Justice inister eanne inard.

“The inister has asked senior departmental o cers, including the Deputy Director-G eneral and local Regional Executive Director to travel to areeba to meet with stake holders on the ground to ensure that everything that can be done to address this

“I, along with the inister, look forward to being briefed on the situation after those meetings take place.”

The Express also contacted mayor ngela Toppin for comment but she was tied up in meetings as The Express went to print. owever, s Toppin did provide the following statement regarding the matter.

“Council condemns spiralling youth crime activities in areeba and is well aware that the community is very angry,” s Toppin said.

“Council will continue to urge the State G overnment, through local tate ember for ook, ynthia ui to take appropriate action.”

As the community continues to rally b ehind M r and M rs D unn, Express j ournalist ichael arren examined different aspects o the matter in this special xpress report.

This latest incident comes a ter an xpress newspaper in estigation titled nough is nough , was published ust days ago about u enile and youth offending across the region.

The investigation A leading Tablelands detective investigating a fire that caused around damage and completely guttered a local mechanics workshop has confirmed early community speculation that the devastating bla e looks to have been deliberately lit. etective enior ergeant and O cer-in- harge of The Tablelands I rett evine suggested preliminary evidence indicated the areeba amaha and erformance otors workshop fire may have started after a pile of tyres were set alight causing the fire to escalate and spread right throughout the ailway ve building.

The Express understands a newspaper taken from a nearby truck was lit and placed amongst the tyres which proved the catalyst of the bla e. ithin hours of the incident e cellent detective work ensured several uick arrests were made in relation to the case. The Express understands the alleged offenders were already previously known to police and local detectives.

“Our early investigations have revealed that the tyres could have been an initial ignition point,” r evine e clusively told The Express.

“The site has been scientifically e amined and we await the results of that e amination. “ e’re confident we’ve located, charged and arrested the four principle offenders in this matter. “ our juvenile females, including three year-old girls, and one year-old female have each been charged with arson.

“That’s where it sits at the minute, however we’ll have days and days of follow-up and there could well be more charges.”

The determined detective said he remains in disbelief about the severity of the crime.

“It’s hard to fathom what would go through a child’s mind to make them want to potentially light a fire ne t to a business, it’s just cra y criminal type behavior,” he said.

“It just makes me wonder, once again, what are and were the parents doing ”. s it stands local police have confirmed a year-old female and two year-old girls were were due to face areeba hildrens ourt two days ago, on July . remaining year-old girl was denied bail and was also due to appear at the hildrens’ court over the past few days.

The enior ergeant respectfully chose not to comment when asked if the alleged offenders showed any remorse, or regret, when under uestioning. even cars were destroyed in the fire, along with motorbike units and uads. ocal tate and ederal s passed on their best wishes to the unn family.

“There is an answer to the troubling youth crime issue, which is relocation sentencing. “ end the kids west to a relocation sentencing facility to learn skills like building, brick laying, cooking and horse riding and they will return to society and be able to contribute.” eanwhile ember for ill hane nuth said he was gutted when he learned about the impacts of the fire.

“This is going to the ne t level for juvenile crime, this is now not just about theft, but it has escalated to arson,” r nuth said.

“This should be a wake-up call for the tate overnment to stop listening to the do-gooders and pay attention to those businesses, families and individuals who have suffered as a result of juvenile crime and to those who believe they will be ne t.

“The overnment needs to adopt a breach of bail as an offence and revoke the clause that a youth offender should be detained in custody for an offence as a last resort and most importantly introduce relocation sentencing that sends them out to remote locations, putting them to work and teaching them values and respect.”

The unn family also made a recent public statement to address the matter. “ oth evin and myself would like to thank you all for the kind words, support and well wishes,” ucy unn said. “ s you can all imagine we are all still feeling very numb shattered and devastated to say the least. “ e will take one day at a time because that’s all we can do. “ heartfelt thanks to you all but we especially would like to thank all that were there to help and of course offer their help in the tough task to relocate the little that we were able to salvage and protect from our front showroom. “ e are beyond words. amily, friends and local people and especially local businesses support each other, that is who we areeba people are. That special report covered the Tablelands youth crime epidemic, the comple nature of juvenile offending, community sentiment and reaction to the issue, and potential solutions. ow, here we are just days later, with a highly respected and hardworking couple’s business now destroyed because of further youth driven crime.

In the days since the incident, the areeba community’s reaction has been swift, stern, and straight to the point.

Once again locals have been very clear on how they believe juvenile and youth offending should be treated and managed across The Tablelands. ome of the areeba community’s potential touted solutions include an enforced youth curfew during the night for e ample, no youths on the streets after pm, increased parent accountability, jail time, a wholistic approach from prevention to conse uence, increased involvement from hild afety, an investigation into local juvenile anti-social behaviour, increased elders input and community service penalties and punishments. astly, the immediate convening of a public meeting where local community members can voice their concerns about juvenile and youth offending to mayor ngela Toppin and tate s. ayor Toppin echoed the community’s collective disgust about the incident. “ ouncil is aware that the community is growing tired of ongoing thefts, damage and gra ti occurring and the recent act of arson was a shocking incident that has only increased the calls for more to be done about youth crime,” s Toppin told The Express.

“Our thoughts are with evin and ucy unn who are valued members of the community and dedicated business owners, and their employees, all of who are suffering a heartbreaking loss

through no fault of their own.

“The crime committed at erformance otors was a disgraceful act and a devastating blow to a local business at a time when uncertainty already e ists due to the impacts of O I . “ ouncil is disappointed at this latest incident of youth crime and can understand the community s desire for more to be done to address such antisocial behaviour. “ ouncil will continue to strongly advocate to the tate overnment for more to be done to address the issue of youth crime, including the need for a multi-agency approach, and supports the efforts of police and the judicial system to deter crime.

“It is not within ouncil s jurisdiction to directly deal with crime, but we will always support interagency efforts to prevent juvenile and youth crime, and programs to provide young people with a sense of purpose and belong within the community. “ ouncil is willing to lend its resources to help be part of the community solution to problems raised by youth crime and to advocate the tate overnment for solutions via its various responsible agencies.”

F or more than 100 years the towering and ageless building has proudly watched over the proud Tablelands town and on the eve of its 110th birthday the iconic structure shows no signs of slowing down just yet.

The pub was built in 1911 and is owned by the English family.

A group of Malanda citiz ens have been worki ng for the last 5 months to develop a system that will allow everyone to contribute to the continued development of the Malanda area.

K nown as “V ision 4885,” the group hopes to facilitate the birth of a new, politically and culturally neutral vehicle for the discussion and development of ideas and projects.

They want a vehicle that gives members a say on their terms and lets them contribute without commitment.

Malanda' s character and population has been evolving over the last couple of decades and the Tablelands has become a melting pot of old wisdom, love and commitment and new experience, ideas and enthusiasm.

Many valuable groups, centred around sports, arts and community development, already exist, but “V ision 4885” believe there are a lot more talented individuals out there, who, for whatever reason, have yet to connect with a group and don' t relish the commitment that club mem-

bership usually involves.

Meanwhile, there has been a burgeoning community desire to have more of a say in what happens in our small towns and citiz ens have been strongly questioning some of the decisions being made for them by local government with little or no consultation.

COV ID notwithstanding, the Malanda V isitor Centre recorded its third highest number of tourists through the doors ever in May 2021. eople are flowing into the area to look, linger and invest and many of them will bring good ideas and new ski lls with them.

The committee of V ision 4885 want to open a system for the community to own and once it is formed, they want to step back and give the community the reigns. Once the new group has formed, they want their role to become one of mentoring, educating and supporting as required.

Their aim is to bring groups together, provide an incorporated body for those who want to volunteer, help coordinate events to avoid date clashes, provide training in meeting procedures, assist with sourcing funding and create a voice and a common purpose for the whole community.

What they are not about, is exclusion of any citiz en, based on age, location or membership of any other group, who wants to participate at any level, even if they do not live within the postcode area.

The committee would like to see “a lot more pump tracks and a lot less Mary Streets” for Malanda. They believe Malanda has so many great assets and so much potential, that with more volunteers, more enthusiasm and more facilitators, the community will continue to grow as a northern destination.

P rojects like the upgrading of Malanda F alls or developing a walkw ay along the Johnston River are only the beginning of what is possible.

BY SAL L Y TU RL EY ATTEN DAN CE numbers at this year' s show rivaled records set at the town’s 100th annual event held in 2017 as the crowds flocked to enjoy the agricultural exhibits, the pavilions, side show alley and the music and dancing.

The 104th Malanda Show was opened riday night by Dave and Judy Q uillam with the recital of a poem Judy had written about the show. The rand Opening ceremony procession was followed by a special supper in the hall for the Q ueen and P rincess entrants, sponsored by par upermarket.

Malanda Show Society ponsored, achel nglish was crowned the 2021 Dairy Q ueen on the night and the airy rincess tiara was placed the head of 16 year old Chloe Robertson, who was sponsored by K enny oad uarry.

Everyone danced until midnight to Jacynta lee and partied on again aturday night to the music of areless. eople were having so much fun in fact, that when the show-grounds power pole blew a fuse both nights, everyone just carried on regardless, hardly even noticing the outage.

F amilies came from as far as eorgetown, Townsville and airns to see the animals, booking out the neighbouring caravan park, making a weekend of it in the alanda mist.

The P oultry section was the largest in orth ueensland and entries in the P rime, Stud and Dairy cattle sections were strong. Atherton show returns a “roaring success” THOU SAN DS of people across the Tablelands walk ed through the gates of the Atherton howgrounds for the first time in over a year as the therton how kicked off last onday.

After returning from a COV ID forced break the Atherton how returned in over Monday and Tuesday last week with a plethora of games, activities, priz es and competitions for locals to enjoy.

F amilies and friends were able to enjoy a great day at the show while the Atherton Show Society was excited to welcome people through the gates. “ e’ve got ticket sales but there could have been to 12 000 people through the gates because they came Monday and Tuesday,” therton how ociety president L eanne Thomas said.

“It was much better than what we had hoped for.

“The show was a roaring success.”

According to Atherton Show Society secretary V ick i B aylif, this massive number of attendees was due to a “terrific Tablelands community.”

“The fact that our show was a little earlier meant that a lot of people we’re ready for the

show,” icki said.

“They turned up and supported us, so we are very grateful to the Tablelands community for supporting the show. “ e also have incredible volunteers and volunteer groups, without them we couldn’t do the show.”

One of these volunteers who has earned high praise for her endless hours of organising and volunteering was therton how ociety event coordinator K ylie L ang.

“K ylie needs to be ack nowledged for going above and beyond to ensure that the show happens,” icki said. ylie was unavailable to comment as she was tak ing a well-deserved rest after many tireless days and long hours of organising, planning and coordinating.

Caitlin Murray was crowned as the show’s newest representative being voted the showgirl after participating in the competition.

After participating in her first competition being crowned most popular princess for the Mareeba Rodeo, Caitlin fell in love with the show scene and all that it represents.

G irl, Caitlin along with the other contestants had to step outside their comfort z ones, speak ing to sponsors of the show and displaying their public speak ing sk ills. “ ince winning my first title I just fell in love with the whole competition and about what it means,” aitlin said.

“It’s not just a beauty contest you can be whatever si e or whatever colour it’s all about who you are as a person.”

N ow as the new face of the Atherton Show Caitlin will be travelling around to other shows throughout the year representing the Atherton Show.

N ext year Caitlin will be going up against other show representative’s looking towards the district crown which is currently held by Tolga local, P aige chofield.

F und, the Malanda Men’s Shed has been able to secure the adequate funding required to complete their slab for their new shed.

The foundation was initially poured over two years ago at the bowls club site, next to the Malanda Showgrounds.

Due to a lack on funding the

project was halted, but now with new funding in the bank and an e plosion of activities and membership the shed construction has been revived.

The 12 x 12 metre shed will be used as the home base for the members, acting as a community asset with many activities planned to be held there.

Veterans thank politicians for ongoing support

Learning about little furry critters on the Tablelands THE Tree K angaroo and Mammal G roup will be coming to Malanda Hotel on July 15 to present an illustrated talk on the N orthern Hairy-nosed Wombat.

This wombat, cousin to the oala, has been classified as a critically endangered species under the International U nion for Conservation of N ature (IU CN ) Red L ist and under the Australian Environmental P rotection and B iodiversity Act 1999 (EP B C Act).

P resident of the Tree K angaroo and Mammal G roup P eter V alentine said that the talk will aim to inform people about local endangered animals.

“It will be a 40 minute talk with slideshows made by ex-

perts about the animal with time for audiences to ask the experts questions,” he said.

“When we do these we also try to find someone who s an expert on threatened animals in our region.

“We have Dr Alan Horsup coming to give the talk , who is an expert in N orthern Hairynosed Wombats.”

Dr Horsup, P hD, has engaged in the Q ueensland P ark s and Wildlife Service recovery program and will be sharing 3 0 years of k nowledge with participants.

THE F N Q chapter of the V ietnam V eterans Motorcycle Club has presented supporter shirts to Tasmanian Senator, Jacqui L ambie, and K ennedy MP , B ob K atter, in recognition of their work to establish a royal commission into veteran suicide and their ongoing support of Australia’s veterans.

Chapter Member and Mareeba resident, Alan Webb, sent veterans supporter shirts to B ob K atter who presented a shirt to Jacqui L ambie at P arliament House in Canberra.

Mr Webb said the shirts were a pure statement of thank s, appreciation, and respect.

“As a veteran, and a DV A recipient, I and others watched with close interest the personal endeavours of Member for K ennedy B ob K atter, and Tasmanian Senator Jacqui L ambie in the media and listened to their statements in the respective houses of P arliament,” he said.

“Due to their incredible perseverance regarding the unnecessary suicides and mental health issues, K atter and L ambie achieved a royal commission.

“Retired military personnel, one doesn t have to be a combat veteran, who have been trained to a high level of survival and possible self-sacrifice, where a mistak e will cost the lives of fellow servicemen and women, do tak e many years to return to a " normal" civilian lifestyle. “ ll veterans suffer in some way, and sometimes that service memory comes back lik e

a brick on one s head.

Tasmanian Senator, Jacqui L ambie, said she was deeply appreciative of the gesture of the supporter shirts and has called on all F N Q veterans and serving personnel to come forward and speak to the upcoming royal commission into veteran suicide.

“We need people to be confident enough to leave the N orth Q ueensland army, navy and air force bases to tell the Royal Commissioner what is happening with the hierarchy of the Defence F orce,” she said.

“The treatment they are dishing out to our diggers is not acceptable. I don’t k now where the hierarchy have gone.

If we want a better Defence F orce, we need all veterans and current personnel to speak out about their experiences.”

Mr K atter also called upon all veterans and Defence personnel to come forward and present their stories to the Royal Commission.

“The V ietnam V eterans Motorcycle Club are k eeping the fight up and their support is most appreciated,” he said.

“They won a great victory with the royal commission, but we have to make sure it’s effective and mak es a change in the lives and to the livelihoods of Australia’s veterans.”

Local barrel racer set for arena action Mareeba local Mark ayla Shephard will be just one of many riders eager to get into the arena this Saturday as the Mareeba Rodeo k ick s off for its first ever one-day event.

25-year-old Markayla will be participating in the barrel racing events, a sport she got involved in after moving away f rom camp draf ting in 2014.

A f ter getting a taste f or the fast-paced adrenaline fuelled sport of barrel racing she has not looked back, participating in any event she could. “ The speed and the adrenaline that you get f rom barrel racing I just got hook ed on it and that was it, now I can’t stop,” Markayla said.

“This year I’m really trying to do as many events as I can get to.

“You meet a lot of people, and you grow friendships,” she said.

“With the traveling I get to see a lot of new places which is really nice.”

DE SPI TE cancelling early in the year, the Mareeba Rodeo has defied the odds and successfully brought a one day rodeo back to Mareeba.

With early year CO V I D f ears, the Mareeba Rodeo A ssociation had decided to cancel the eve nt, now ove r the past couple of months they hav e been worki ng hard to bring a reduced rodeo to Mareeba this aturday.

Now only operating ove r the one- day people can expect all their favourite events back again with plenty of rides, games, stalls and rodeo action.

Melville’s Animal arm will be making an appearance yet again at this year’ s show while the woodchopping competition and show tent have been cancelled. espite it being a reduced eve nt there has not been a change to the rodeo eve nts with every single bullride, barrel race and eve rything in between still on the cards.

Mareeba Rodeo A ssociation president Peter Brown said that it has been a di cult process to organise the rodeo on such short notice but he has high hopes. “ ven though we are shortening the eve nt it is still the same preparation, the second day is really ust the continuation of the first day,” he said. “ I t has been a challenge but we’re here and we’re ready. “ We’ re excited to host the event from a social aspect for the community.”

The o cial opening of the rodeo will be done in the main arena on aturday night with the finals for all the rodeo eve nts held as well f or people to enjoy.

Sideshow alley will be opened until 12am with live music blasting at both bars until 2am with both areless and a country music set to light up the night.

As is the norm with many events in 2021 people are being aske d to think ahead

and book their ticke ts f or the Mareeba Rodeo this week end.

Ticke ts will be able to be purchased from the gate however to ensure a uick, easy and smooth admittance to this year’ s rodeo, Mr Brown has aske d people to grab ticke ts online bef ore heading into the rodeo.

“When people come to our event it will be a little different to what it was in 201 ,” he said.

“If we can get 0 percent of our patrons in via online ticketing that would be fantastic.”

People will be able to drive in and park their cars before heading up to the ticket booths to grab their ticke ts and head through the turnstiles.

Set to be held on J uly 17 to 18 the K uranda Roots F estiv al will now tak e place at K anjini located at the f oot of E merald Creek F alls just outside of Mareeba.

I nitially held at the Billabong in K uranda the f estiv al has made the temporary mov e to K anjini to better enf orce its non- drug and alco-

hol policy.

With a range of liv e acts set to perf orm including many first nations acts the f estiv al is sure to be one not to be missed being hosted in an area of both cultural and biodiversity significance.

Mark eting Director f or the K uranda Roots F estiv al Rik aela Rusch, has been attending the f estiv al since she was a k id and will ev en be perf orming at this year’ s f estiv al.

able to bring the f estiv al back to the region af ter f our years and hopes to see a celebration of first nations v oices and culture. “ We wanted to bring the f estiv al back this year with a different focus, less on the bar env ironment and hopef ully into more caring f or country and amplifying first nations v oices,” she said. “ O v er half of our music line-up is first nations and we’ v e got really amaz ing artists including locals.

“ Personally, I ’ m so excited I ’ v e grown up going to this f estiv al and seeing the new generation perf orming on the stage they watched growing up is such a beautif ul thing.”

Besides the music there will also be sev eral work shops operating ov er the week end f ocused on being out in nature and caring f or the land, as well as fire stick mak ing, weav ing, spear throwing and traditional dance work shops.

Water Street brings new sounds to the Roots Festival

Water Street was f ormed by hip hop artists Ja mahl Brodie Chong, K ale V illaf or, Marshall Wacando and Cade Pettersen on Water Street Cairns and have been recording their songs f or the past f ew years.

The f our artists collaborate alongside producers Ja rreau Maybir and Jo seph Woodley to get their songs recorded and uploaded to platf orms such as Triple J U nearthed.

H ead member Ja mahl says the band collaborated on their different styles of music to create the uniq ue songs they do today. “ We are f our guys that have just joined together and take n f our types of hip hop and clashed it

together to make a sort of super genre,” he said. “ We are all F irst Nations artists and we collaborate our traditional language and the experiences we have to create our songs. “ O ur music is about a lot of social issues as well as things that are important to us such as f amily.”

Waters Street will be perf orming live at the K uranda Roots F estiva l, and they said it will be their most important gig to date.

“ We grew up going to the f estiva l, I still have a jumper f rom it about 10 years ago,” Ja mahl said. “ We have done lots of big gigs down south, but this one is by f ar the most important as it has a more homey f eeling to it. “ The K uranda Roots F estiva l is ve ry close to us and we love the callibrar of artists and the beautif ul messages behind all their songs and to be able to play on traditional land.”

ENTERTAINMENT NAIDOC Week celebrations N AIDOC will be celebrated across the region this week , with multiple activities, displays and ceremonies to be held across the F ar N orth.

This year, the theme for N AIDOC week is Heal Country, a call for further protection of Indigenous sacred sights, lands, waters and cultural heritage.

The national celebrations

will be held from July and finish on July 11.

In honour of the week , Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has already raised the Indigenous flag at the ouncil building on Mabel Street in Atherton.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that the region will also open an exhibition at the Tablelands Regional G allery (TRG ).

“We' re hosting a spectacular touring exhibition at our Tableland Regional G allery, Jabu B irriny (L and + Sea) that celebrates the unique environment of Y arrabah and its ongoing importance to culture and people,” he said.

“The exhibition opened on F riday 2 July and runs until Saturday 3 1 July.”

Director Michael Bryce is excited to be able to bring his second production to lif e with a host of young talented actors. “ This is our second year running a play specifically for our youth members, these young actors have the talent

and dedication to do any role justice, but it can be hard f or them to break into the senior group,” he said. “ O ur younger members have been able to get bit parts in our senior perf ormances and have done a terrific ob, but they didn' t always get the roles that they could really get their teeth into. “ We f elt that they needed an opportunity to star, to be the leads.”

With a cast f ull of young actors none above the age of 23 and some as young as 14 there is a welcome mix of young eagerness steered by tried and tested theatre experience.

“ These people are the f uture of our club and anyone who saw last year' s play will kn ow that the f uture is in good hands,” Michael said. “ There have been some challenges, as has become typical in our pandemic af f ected world, but we are look ing f orward to putting on a great show once more. “ We are glad to be able to provi de some much- needed entertainment and comic relief f or Tableland audiences.”

The project aims at removing invasive weeds from the area and restoring native trees on the creek bank s which were found covered in lantana and guinea grass.

Mr and Mrs Evan said that they felt like they won the lottery when they were ask ed to begin replanting the trees along the creek bank .

“Y ou couldn’t see the creek because of the weeds a couple of months ago, so we brought

in machinery to remove them,’’ she said.

“Then we got a call from the council and what they were proposing fitted right in with what we were trying to achieve.”

The weed removal is a crucial step tak en from TRC and Terrain N RM to ensure that there are no drastic changes to the ecosystem around South edar reek and its neighbouring Marshall Creek .

“ t arshall ark the canopy trees were there, but everything underneath the canopy was invaded by weeds,” Terrain N RM’s Chelsy Maloney said.

“If we don’t stay on top of managing this area, it’ll lead to an irreversible change of the ecosystem.”

The project will continue to remove any invasive weeds found and trial multiple native plants along the river bed.

Risk analysis to determine Mexico lime importation

BY M I CH AEL WARREN MIN ISTER for Agriculture, Drought, and Emergency Management, David L ittleproud has reiterated and rea rmed the government’s position that it will await the findings of a risk report before making a final determination about whether to allow limes to be imported into Australia from Mexico.

Mexico is the largest exporter of limes in the world, but a portion of their produce carries disease, including the troublesome citrus canke r. ocal farmers have been vocal in their concerns and have told The Express on numerous occasions that, if approved, the allowance of lime importation from e ico stands to decimate the local lime farming industry.

In addressing recent written concerns from K ennedy MP B ob K atter, Mr L ittleproud said ustralia is “obliged” to consider such import proposals from other countries, including Mexico.

The findings of a risk analysis report currently being conducted by G overnment will play a ke y role in what the next developments are in the matter.

“The risk analysis on limes from Mexico is in progress and will be used to determine whether Mexican lime imports can be safely allowed into ustralia and if so in which conditions,” the Agriculture Minister wrote to Mr K atter.

“The process employs ustralia’s well-established plant risk analysis and is based on the latest scientific information.

“It assesses the level of biosecurity risk that may be associated with the potential importation of limes from e ico and identifies appropriate ways to manage the risk.” r ittleproud said ustralia had a responsibility to consider such a proposal.

“The risk analysis on limes from Mexico was initiated in response to an import proposal from Mexico,” Mr L ittleproud wrote in his written reply to the K ennedy MP .

“As a World Trade Organisation (WTO) member ustralia is obliged to consider proposals from other countries.”

Mr L ittleproud said while he acknow ledged r atter’s concerns he is “committed to safeguarding Australia against pests and diseases” and “the importation of agricultural goods is only allowed where it is safe to do so”.

begs the q uestion as to why any L abor politician would support V oluntary A ssisted Dying (V A D) legislation in this state.

O ur health and aged care systems are under enormous pressure – ambulances take too long to get to people, or are q ueued outside emergency because there are too f ew beds.

People are waiting well ove r the expected periods to get surgery, and many can’ t access dialysis treatment in their hometown.

I n these instances, who suffers most I t is not the bourgeois elite who all have priva te insurance; it is the worki ng classes, the poor, the marginalised, the people who vo te f or L abor and expect L abor to protect them.

Some have argued that legalising V A D is a matter of justice.

But in Queensland, where the healthcare system cannot currently provi de adeq uate and just access to healthcare servi ces according to indivi dual needs, how can it possibly be reasonable to assert that the legalisation of V A D is a matter of ustice A dvo cates of V A D f req uently talk about f reedom of choice and respect f or dignity. But whose dignity is really being respected

The bourgeois elite who have access to priva te health insurance - they get to choose to continue to treatment, to ask f or palliative care, or to access (at public expense) V A D. But what about eve ryone else V A D is not good policy f or a L abor gove rnment.

Compassion and respect f or choice and dignity are noble goals, and not wanting to see people suffer is a noble goal.

But at a time where those who do not belong to the wealthy elite are already at the mercy of a health and aged care system that is underf unded, under- resourced and largely devo id of compassion, V A D does not genuinely contribute to any of these goals. or reference, palliative care servi ces in Queensland are underf unded to the tune of about $ 275 million per year.

The Palaszczu k L abor G ove rnment could meet this req uirement f or 20 years with the same amount of money it has poured into its Cross Rive r Rail project.

Ingredients 4 eggs 2/3 cup honey ½ cup coconut oil ¾ cup brown sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon 1½ tsp baking soda 2/3 cups unsweetened cocoa 2 cups all purpose flour 3 cups shredded zucchini 2½ cups chocolate chips

Method

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 loaf pans.

2. Grate or shred up enough zucchini to make 3 cups. Set aside.

3. Beat eggs, honey, melted coconut oil, brown sugar and vanilla until smooth.

4. Add in salt, baking powder, baking soda,cinnamon, cocoa and flour. mix well.

5. Stir in zucchini and 2 cups of chocolate chips.

6. Pour batter into prepared loaf pans and sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.

7. Bake 60 minutes. Remove bread. Let bread rest in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pans and let cool completely.

Brady bowls her way to victory MAREEB A bowls enthusiast Sue B rady has won her first ever ustralian Open after competing on the old oast over the last weekend of June.

The ustralian Open is the biggest bowls competition in ustralia and even attracts players from outside the country to participate.

Teams from all around the country nominated themselves to compete this year in a series of different divisions and age groups. ue and her doubles partner had been paired up before and retuned unsuccessful, however this year they gelled well and took home gold in the Over- s omen’s airs. “ e beat the defending champions from two years ago,” ue said.

“I have been away for this competition uite often and have never won. “ ow we will be looking to return next year to defend our title.” ue felt very proud to have won considering it was a tough match against the defending champions. “ e led most of the way e cept for the th end where they got in front by one,” ue said.

It was all up to ue on her last bowl to secure the victory where she dragged the jack and secured two points to win the game.

The ladiators opened up the score uickly with haun tephens running over the line within the first five minutes.

SU CCESS: Tandia Singleton has b ecome Q ueensland’ s second M uay Thai Australia Champion after w inning her recent featherw eight match up.

BY RH Y S TH O M AS DESP ITE only stepping into the ring just over a year ago, Tandia Singleton has become Q ueensland’s second ever Muay Thai Australia (MTA) Champion after winning the recent F eatherweight Titles.

The titles were held at a newly constructed hall at Cairns State High School on Thursday, June 24 with Tandia mak ing the trip down the hill to compete.

B eing the number one fighter in her weight divi-

sion Tandia had to go headto-head with Q ueensland’s number two in a fierce contest.

“I was really nervous especially with it being a fiveround fight, it was more than what I was used to,” Tandia said.

“B y the fourth round I was ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’ but I just told myself to k eep going.

“I managed to get through and really started to turn it up in the fourth and fifth rounds.”

Tandia trains with B lack Dog Muay Thai in Mareeba, a gym that has shown it provides quality over quantity.

The 28 -year-old only started practicing Muay Thai with the gym two years ago to get fit and after just si months of training she found herself in the ring.

“I was nervous for my first fight but I just wanted to give it a try,” Tandia said.

“I’m not a violent person at all so it was certainly a different e perience.

“Once I get in the ring

it’s different, I just get in the z one.”

N ow sporting a record of eight wins and two losses Tandia never thought she would be in this position, taking every fight that was offered to her “I just thought I’d just give it a go each time.”

That eager attitude and a relentless heart filled approach to her training has led her to become Q ueensland’s second ever MTA Champion, a title she will fight fist and elbow to defend.

AF TER more than decade of dedication to the L aura Turf Club, one of the club’s most valued and respected members, Carmen Williams has been awarded a lifetime membership.

Carmen was surprised with her new lifetime membership honour at the L aura Races held at the Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday, June 26.

It was Carmen’s years of commitment and passion for the L aura Races and know ledge of country racing that saw her presented with a life membership.

L aura Turf Club P resident G raham L ove said that Carmen has been an integral part of the club for many years.

“Carmen was tied up with the turf club well and truly before my time,” he said. “ er and her e -husband were paramount in ke eping the club going over the years.

“If anyone new came along she was always there to hand over and pass on her know ledge.”

Secretary and treasurer were just some of the positions that Carmen has held over her 13

years at the turf club.

In 2008 the L aura Turf Club was in dire need of volunteers, Carmen answered the call and has never looke d back as she continues to provide invaluable support to the club. armen landed an e ecutive role shortly after and has remained on the committee ever since, enjoying every single race meet she was a part of.

“It’s just a great weeke nd and every race meeting is memorable,” she said.

“I was blown away to receive the life membership badge, it means the world to me.

“Y ou start doing these things and you don’t ever think you would get something like a life membership so I was really chuffed and humbled.”

Carmen now has plans to tick a couple of very special things off her bucket list while travelling around with her partner in their RV .

She plans on visiting the birthplaces of her mother and father, areas that were often spoke n about fondly by her parents.
