Furor over Mareeba’s main street

BY RHYS THOMAS MAREEBA residents have been in uproar over recent weeks as the newly installed wombat crossings in Byrnes Street continue to cause confusion, but the transport side of this dilemma has been overlooked.

While pedestrians and motorists alike are grappling with the new rules and changes to their main street, truck drivers have been grappling with the constant gear and speed changes that comes with the new raised crossings.

With Mareeba essentially being the ‘gateway to the cape’ a plethora of large transport, produce and cattle trucks make their way through the quaint main street.

Now with the new raised crossings installed, trucks must virtually slow to a standstill to drive

over the crossings, this creates a deafening sound of breaks, gear changes and acceleration.

“Before we could sit on 30km/hr comfortably through the main street in one gear causing no noise,” Owner of Mareeba Sands Ron Petersen said.

“Now we have got to drop back into low range and slow to about 10km/hr to get over them bumps, then we have to change up a couple of gears, then back a couple of gears.

“In the summertime when it gets hot the trucks don’t get any airflow, so we have fans that will cut in which create a whole heap of noise.”

Mr Petersen has been driving trucks since 1985 and throughout those 36 years he has carried cargo through Byrnes Street.

BY MICHAEL WARREN ONE of Atherton’s favourite drinking holes has claimed a much-deserved gong at the prestigious QHA awards in Brisbane.

The Barron Valley Hotel licensees Michael and Maree Nasser and the pub’s staff claimed the outstanding community service and achievement award for delivering exceptional service in the hospitality industry and along the way beat Brisbane’s famous Caxton Hotel, among

others, to claim the win.

The Barron Valley Hotel is a huge supporter of Atherton and regularly provides major financial support to local sporting groups and community organisations.

The Nassar’s have run the pub for close to 90 years, first taking over the iconic waterhole on Melbourne Cup Day in 1930.

“We’re extremely proud of this particular achievement, typically these types of awards go to more high profiled hotels in South East

Queensland so to come away with this is just fantastic,” a delighted Michael Nassar told The Express.

“We’re also a pub that doesn’t have poker machines for any assistance, so we’re also quite proud of that.”

The QHA awards for excellence are recognised as the most coveted awards in the hospitality industry, honoring the achievement of excellence in a wide range of categories.

“The awards provides a prime opportunity to show-

case venues and staff and encourages winners and attendees to be proud of their achievements,” event spokesperson Tom McGuire said.

The iconic Barron Valley hotel or ‘BV’ to locals was built in the 1880s and underwent a rebuild in 1907.

The BV is widely recognised as a truly historic hotel, previously winning a centenary of federation award.

The hotel is also listed with the Australian Heritage Commission.

Changes to main street raise new safety concerns

BY RHYS THOMAS ANOTHER issue raised was the location of the wombat crossings as many are very close to intersections and roundabouts.

“If a truck has to pull up at these spots to go over these bumps, he’s blocked the whole intersection off,” he said.

“If I am travelling south, where they put that crossing near the medical clinic, if I have to pull up because someone happens to be using it, the whole roundabout is blocked off.

“When there is an ambulance or a firetruck or any emergency vehicle that must get off Lloyd Street or onto Walsh Street, we’ve got them blocked.

“We understand the idea was to slow the traffic down, but this is ridiculous.”

This raises the issue of increased the response time of emergency services trying to get in and out of the town or responding to an accident in Byrnes Street.

Mr Petersen has asked the question whether an engineer

had seen the main street and thought about these issues before deciding to install the crossings.

“Engineers don’t talk to truck drivers,” he said.

“They are so highly educated that they can’t talk to common people.

“I would like to know if an engineer got in a truck, went for a drive and thought about all these issues before they did anything.”

“Motorists have right of way as the raised pedestrian facilities on Byrnes Street will not have zebra stripes painted on them.”

TMR has also revealed that Mareeba is not the only town to have wombat crossings installed on their main street as Stanthorpe, Kingaroy and Gatton all

have them installed along with seven more towns.

Currently residents are still grappling with the concept of giving way to motorists and there will be an adjust period as people get used to the new rules.

Whether the new crossings will prevent accidents and improve safety is still yet to be seen.

Business left in the dark with loss of parking SOME Mareeba businesses have been ill-informed prior to the recent crossing installations in Byrnes Street with some claiming they were informed of the works too late.

The talk of the town lately has been the current volatile situation with new wombat crossings installed in the main street of Mareeba.

Construction started at the end of April and carried on through May, new wombat crossings were installed and an existing zebra crossing replaced with

a wombat crossing.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) stated that they informed business owners of the changes and works happening outside their businesses via letters.

When The Express approached businesses close to the roadworks some confirmed that they received a letter, however others said they received theirs a week prior or the day the works actually started.

said that the chamber has never been in support of wombat crossings in Byrnes Street.

“Going back a number of years the chamber has never been in favour of wombat crossings, we believe that it disrupts the truck movement going through the town,” he said.

“We supported nothing else but the traffic lights being installed at the post office centre crossing.”

The chamber was also concerned with the lack of consultation that TMR had with relevant

business owners affected by the works.

“The area that the chamber was extremely concerned about was the lack of consultation, we were never made aware of the loss of parking and the extent of where the parking would be lost.

“We have written to them raising the issue that there was a lack of consultation and apparently letters were sent out and not all businesses received those letters.

“The period to consult back to TMR, the fact that it was not done effectively, it was not clear-

ly identified what was going to happen, it’s been a very poor performance in consultation with the businesses.”

TMR was asked specific questions by The Express in relation to these issues including the lack of consultation with businesses and the wider public and the installation of wombat crossings when they were never requested.

Below is a list of the specific questions that TMR declined to answer.

Which businesses along By-

rnes Street did TMR contact and why were some businesses left out, including some who were only two or three storefronts down from the works but use the parking spaces?

Why was the wider public not informed of the removal of parking spaces even though they are the ones who use said parking spaces?

Why did TMR decide to install new wombat crossings when the initial call was for a signal to be installed at the Post Office Centre Crossing?

Tablelands mother starts conversations about youth suicide awareness and prevention A DETERMINED Tablelands resident has taken it upon herself to generate a conversation she hopes will eventually lead to the creation of an online support group that helps parents talk to others about youth suicide awareness and prevention.

Local mother Shannon Dunstan originally made a public enquiry on social media platform, Facebook, about whether such an online group already existed but most feedback suggested the group she had in mind had not been created as yet.

Ms Dunstan still supports the creation of the group but is unable to establish one due to busy personal circumstances.

“The response blew me away and highlighted a need (for such a group) in the Tablelands,” Ms Dunstan said.

“As a parent currently doing my very best to support my daughter I felt the need to reach out to other parents or caregivers.

“I want to provide a space free from judgement, a space we can just take a breath, to vent, or to just refocus and reset.

“Mental health support has come a long way but we still have a long way to go.

“Hopefully someone will be able to create the group for those parents looking to talk with others in the Tablelands.”

Gift cards to be emblazoned with local images

BY MICHAEL WARREN THE soon to be launched Shop Tablelands Gift Cards which locals will be able to use at participating outlets across the region will be emblazoned with iconic images that beautifully represent the region.

The Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce confirmed Linda Joseph won all three competition categories – Atherton, Malanda and Ra-

venshoe, with her images to feature on each of the three stacks of cards to be issued to those centres.

The images include Millstream Falls, a sweeping image of Tablelands farmland and an iconic picture of a local crop.

“We had over 47 entries across all categories,” Tablelands Chamber president Bree Hargraves noted.

“This was a really tough decision, we have so many

talented photographers on the Tablelands.

“I think you’ll agree these photos represent our regions and are a great first set of gift cards.”

The Chamber confirmed is it working close with both the Malanda and Ravenshoe commerce groups with thanks to Tablelands Regional Council economic development funding to deliver the gift cards.

In simple terms locals can

purchase a shop Tablelands gift card at a chosen value of between $10-$1000 and then use it to make normal purchases at participating outlets across the region.

“It is often said that $100 spent locally equates to a $180 impact on the local economy due to the multiplier effect,” Ms Hargraves explained.

“That is when money is spent locally some of that money – about 40% – is then

reinvested into other local stores and so on – about seven times.”

Ms Hargraves also mentioned that once the cards have been designed and printed a team of volunteers will visit participating businesses to active their EFTPOS terminals on to the closed loop system.

Bypass road: Everyone will benefit says chair the resolution that has been put forward.

Then whatever we arrive at will get voted on. It may well be we have two separate resolutions to put before parliament. It must be remembered, just like in Mareeba, the voting figures will be made public.

Bypass road steering committee chairman Ken Harley stands at the location where the proposed road would veer right and start heading towards Redlynch.

A FEW weeks ago the Kuranda Bypass road steering committee held its public meeting in Mareeba where attendees unanimously agreed upon the presented resolution.

As the next public meeting about the bypass road nears in Cairns, Express journalist Michael Warren went one on one with committee chairman Ken Harley about many different aspects of the much talked about proposal.

Ken, what’s been the public sentiment about the matter since the Mareeba meeting on June 1?

I have had many discussions with various stakeholders since the meeting. There is a lot of interest in the bypass road being constructed from people of all walks of life, whether they be based in Cairns or The Tablelands.

The construction and establishment of the road stands to have many benefits.

They might be from the agricultural, mining, tourism or transport sectors but each individual has a real vested interest in something like the bypass being constructed. In Cairns, it would fasten up travel time from the suburbs into the city.

In saying that I’m very con-

scious and extremely respectful of the Redlynch side of the argument as well – I really need to reiterate that. We aim to be as transparent and open as possible, and if things have not come across the way, we definitely apologise for that.

I say to the Redlynch residents please be patient, you’ll have an opportunity to voice your thoughts, opinions, feelings and points of view at our Cairns meeting on June 29.

We openly welcome your input and we 100% value your thoughts and how we can achieve the best outcome for all concerned.

Ken, rightly or wrongly, yourself and the steering committee have faced criticism from some quarters that you haven’t been as consultative or transparent about your bypass proposal with the Redlynch community.

What’s your reaction to claims about the lack of transparency?

I can say on record that we are a small volunteer group who are absolutely doing our best to keep everyone up to date with things.

That includes updating and responding to questions and enquiries on our Facebook page – I might not get back to everyone in a timely manner, but I defi-

nitely read and note comments and try to respond as much as I possibly can to people.

I value every comment and appreciate all pieces of feedback that we continually receive about the project.

What’s your message to Redlynch residents ahead of the meeting?

My message is please come along; we can’t wait to chat with everyone about it.

Also, as we’ve said numerous times we will not be knocking houses down or putting extra traffic on the intake road.

There has also been online chatter about the bypass road increasing traffic on the intake road – this would not be the case.

Remember this is only one of many proposals that have been put to government.

Further to the upcoming meeting in Cairns, if the resolution doesn’t receive a unanimous vote, what is the general process after that?

The Cairns meeting will follow the same process as we had in Mareeba. So, the steering committee will put a resolution to the those at the meeting. From there, it goes to the people. That is, we ask if anyone wants to alter, change, debate or reconsider

■ The meeting for Cairns residents will be held at Cairns Showgrounds at the Fulton Bar, on Tuesday, June 29 from 7pm. Entry will be off Mulgrave rd and attendees are advised to enter through the main showground gate.

Those coming are encouraged to bring their own chair as there will be no formal seating facilities at the meeting.

ATHERTON’S giant leap into housing some of the best medical facilities in Far North Queensland continues to take shape with construction progressing well on the town’s new four storey clinical services building.

When completed the building will be home to an emergency department, medical imaging, operating theatres, an inpatient ward, maternity and birthing services, private operating and endoscopy theatres and a sterilizing unit.

The current build follows the completion of stage one which included a new community, allied and mental health building on Jack St which was completed last September.

A new helipad was also constructed as part of the first stage of the redevelopment.

“The ground slab for the

four storey clinical services building was finished in May, containing around 969 cubic metres of concrete - equivalent to around 186 concrete truckloads,” a QLD heath spokesperson told The Express.

“The next step is to pour all slabs up to level two before commencing construction of the roof.

“As mentioned the clinical services building will feature a new emergency department and medical imaging on the lower ground level and maternity and birthing services with private ensuite facilities, plus other inpatient facilities on ground level.

“There will be two operating theatres with a sterilising unit also on level one with major plant including air conditioning and associated services on level two.

“Work is expected to be completed in 2022.”

“Things like this are happening every couple of days, there was even an incident on ANZAC Day where a chap from the prison caught them ripping up the wreaths at the cenotaph.”

Ms Troughton said that she wants to see the cenotaph more protected for the sake of those who fought for us in war.

Ms Troughton had a strong message for the vandals.

“You wouldn’t like it if we were vandalising your graves, this is the only grave these boys have and the only place where you can come to commemorate them,” she said.

Since Monday, the cenotaph has been cleaned again by Mareeba Shire Council.

If you see any suspicious behaviour towards the cenotaph, please call the police.

BY ELLIE FINK IN a repeated act, Mareeba’s cenotaph was once again subject to vandalism with the culprits using pens to tag themselves.

The sad events have left many members of the community shocked and angered as this is not the first time these people have striked.

The vandalism covered the majority of the south side of the cenotaph, with the names of the fallen being scribbled on and the bottom step covered in inappropriate language.

Elwyn Troughton has spent the majority of her time studying and learning about the fallen, writing multiple books about life during the war.

She said that she was disgusted by the disrespectful actions on what she described as sacred grounds.

“ANZAC Park is the only acknowledgement for the lads who gave their lives in defense of this country and most of them

do not have graves,” she said.

“What wasn’t lost in Gallipoli was lost on the Western front and we have had a lot of people on that cenotaph who have won awards for their service.

“When you desecrate the memorial, it is like getting loose in a cemetery and smashing up peoples headstones.”

Ms Troughton explained to The Express that although not every man on the cenotaph was Mareeba born and raised, they fought in circumstances that she believes the vandals will never understand.

“Most men who did come home suffered horribly with wounds, shell shock and some even committed suicide,” she said.

“It is the lack of respect from this riff raff to the men who fought that makes me mad, especially when it took so long to erect the cenotaph.”

Having identified limited accommodation options for people living with a disability

in the region, Tableland Community Link (TAC) decided it needed to find a suitable solution and thus believes its GAP project is the answer.

Under its proposal the new facility would be constructed on its already existent Grove Street premise and consist of five, two-bedroom units and 10-one bedroom units.

The poor condition of the Barron River bridge and the 1000 or more commercial heavy vehicles per day travelling the Kuranda Range Road has reached a critical point.

In 2005 the Kuranda Range Road was officially declared redundant due to excess vehicles per day which now exceeds 10,000. Safety has been totally compromised, the road is restricting development on the Tablelands and beyond and freight costs are skyrocketing because of truck size restrictions.

The Tablelands and Peninsula contribute enormously to the Cairns economy so please give Hinterland residents a fair go by supporting a new access with no river crossing.

50 years of Australian grown tea

BY RHYS THOMAS STARTING from a small tea bush outside of a doctor’s practice and growing to the rolling tea fields in Malanda, Nerada Tea has grown substantially in its 50-year history, an anniversary they celebrate this year.

It has been 50 years since Nerada Tea witnessed the tea growing friendly climate on the Tablelands and more specifically, Malanda.

The production was initially split between the Tablelands estate and the Innisfail estate before a factory was built on the Malanda estate in 1991, the production was officially relocated.

Now housing three million

tea bushes, Nerada Tea supplies eight percent of the tea produced nationally, no small feat for a business that has managed to keep its production, staff and values locally focused.

“It’s no small feat and that puts it back into the bigger playing category, it certainly is the biggest estate in Australia,” Tony Poyner Manager and Director of Nerada Tea Estates said.

“Nerada Tea has a homely vibe and it gives it that down to earth character that it really does have, not just portray.

“Nerada’s core value is to restore and renew.”

“It is a very hard job to have a 50-year history and not be proactive and forward thinking.

“Any company that has survived that long in the mainstream obviously must be doing something right.”

Malanda Falls Conservation Park Wander through the Malanda Forest on two easy walks that overlook the North Johnstone River. The 1km Tulip Oak Walk shares information about Ngadjon-Jii cuture and lifestyle.

Bringing people together from near and far

Toby and Joan Atkinson never dreamed that when they started the Royal Flying Doctor Service Near and Far Auxiliary that it would grow to be what is it today.

BY RHYS THOMAS THE Royal Flying Doctors Service has touched the hearts and minds of countless Australians in their worst times, Joan and Toby Atkinson are no exception.

The couple had their first brush with the RDFS while living out on their early lives on their Lincoln Springs property

in the Upper Burdekin area.

In the early 70’s, Bronwyn, the Atkinson’s 11-year-old daughter, had quite a severe accident whilst riding her horse along a fence line ending up with a massive tear underneath her armpit.

“The top wire was barbed and she laid all the barbs flat for seven feet along the top wire

with her armpit,” Toby said.

“That made a pretty fair mess of things.

“I got her off, lifted her arm up and I could actually see her lungs.”

After making the plea to the flying doctors over the two-way radio they arrived at the property to treat Bronwyn within a matter of hours.

Upon seeing the severity of the wound the doctor advised the Atkinson’s that she was unfit for travel and had to be treated at the station.

“When he finished he said, ‘If we take her back to the hospital for sure she will pick up a hospital infection with a wound like this’,” Toby said.

“He said she’d be much safer left out here in the bush.”

Before the accident both Joan and Toby were involved in the RFDS whether it be through small fundraising events or volunteering.

Now having the RFDS impact the family in such a way, Joan and Toby had decided to take their support a step further.

First supporting Bronwyn in her successful bid to become the Queen of the Outback, with all the money raised going directly to the RFDS. Afterwards, due to their continuous support to the RFDS Joan and Toby were advised to create their own auxiliary as they had brought people together from near and far, hence, the RFDS Near and Far Auxiliary was founded.

Years later the Atkinsons, now in their 80s, have taken a step back from the auxiliary and have taken on more advisory

roles.

“We thought at the beginning we would only have six or 10 members and now it’s many times that,” Joan said.

“It give you a lovely feeling that you’ve been able to do something worthwhile,” Toby added.

Joan and Toby have now de-

cided to relocate down to Charters Towers after living in Kairi to be with their family.

Most of their family now lives in and around the Charters Towers area, including their daughter Bronwyn whose unfortunate accident gave birth to one of Australia’s most successful RFDS auxiliaries.

New home of town’s Community Centre opens in Mareeba

MAREEBA’S community centre will be a hive of activity when Mayor Angela Toppin officially declares the facility open during a special ceremony this morning.

The community based not for profit, neighborhood centre’s main charter is to provide information, advice and referral services to the community.

The facility is home to four meeting/training rooms and will offer crucial assistance such as

no interest loan schemes, emergency bills relief and linkage with services providers.

“Our motto is small pieces, big picture, we have the mindset here of taking small steps to help as many people as we can,” centre manager Julie Theakston explained.

“We want to work collaboratively and effectively within the Mareeba community and connect people with the types of services and assistance they

TABLELANDS Regional Council has confirmed works have recently commenced on stage one of a new $100,000 capital project in Malanda.

Works to construct a pump track at Jack May Park are expected to take four weeks and once completed will cater to BMX, mountain bikes, scooters, skate boards, roller blades and anything else that is generally child friendly.

The pump track will be able to be ridden in any direction with high visibility site lines for parents and other supervisors.

The pump track will have a certified stormwater drainage system and will be a low maintenance facility that consists of an asphalt surface, fibre reinforced concrete edging and turf landscaped.

New facilities revitalise century-old college ONE of the oldest Catholic schools in Far North Queensland has celebrated both history and renewal as it unveiled a $1.25M contemporary facelift recently in its 100th year of service.

Mount St Bernard College in Herberton recently opened a raft of cutting-edge practical facilities, including a new food technology kitchen, refurbished art room and art courtyard, an upgraded music, drama and dance facility with a tutorial room, and two updated classrooms.

Bishop of Cairns James Foley, Cairns Catholic Education Services Executive Director Bill Dixon and Senate Candidate Andrew Cripps, representing the Federal Govern-

ment, were among the official attendees who helped to unveil the new spaces.

Principal Ian Margetts said the refurbished facilities helped to support both teaching and learning, with staff able to access technology provisions and students learning in a comfortable environment.

“The upgrade to specialist teaching spaces will enhance the College’s curriculum delivery in its areas of strength,” he said.

“Having a high first Nations student population, students can enjoy, experience success, and share culture in these practical spaces, with a contemporary approach.

Mr Dixon said the College had long provided a vital service to families from all corners of Far North Queensland.

“Mount St Bernard College has been integral to the education of tens of thousands of Far North students over its many decades of service,” he said.

TWO local butcheries have won awards in the Tropical Region AMIC Sausage King Awards this year and will be heading onto the state final in Brisbane in October.

Russo’s Quality Meats in Mareeba and Cross Custom Meats in Atherton both took out top places with their renowned meats.

out first in the continental award for their sausages and third in beef and leans.

Cross Custom Meats in Atherton also took first place in Traditional Australian Beef, Boneless Leg Ham, and Kabana.

Both butcheries will be heading down to Brisbane later in the year to compete for the state title.

Daintree ferry ticket prices to increase LOCALS who cross the Daintree River next month on the iconic Daintree ferry will notice a price hike with Douglas Shire Council confirming new charges will be in place from July 1.

The change in ticket prices will see the cost for a single vehicle move to $23 (up from $16) for a one-way ticket and $39 (up from $28) for a return trip.

Douglas Shire locals who renew their Daintree Ferry Concession Card before June 30 this year will pay $18 and be able to use that card for unlimited ferry travel until April 2023.

The new prices allow Council to cover the costs of the new contract and maintain an alternative revenue stream.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the new fees more accurately represented the cost to Council to provide the service.

“The new price is consistent with our approach to user

pay services and makes sure the costs aren’t funded through increases to general rates,” he said.

“During the public consultation, the preference for a ferry service was abundantly clear with most residents and ratepayers in favour of us using that service to provide revenue to Council.

“We also heard from a number of people in the community who were willing to see higher ticket prices if it meant maintaining a ferry service.”

To fund the recent ferry purchase, Council is using a combination of funding from the Daintree Ferry Reserve and available funding in the capital works budget.

The Daintree Ferry reserve was established to fund operational costs and ongoing capital works associated with the provision of ferry services on the Daintree River.

Malanda preschoolers set up for a sustainable future MALANDA Early Learning have become the recipients of the 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant with an additional Bee Bonus to get the kids ready to become more sustainable.

The Woolworths Landcare Fund allows primary and early learning schools to access learning materials to teach young children how to be sustainable.

The additional Bee Bonus was added for centres learning how to care for nature's most

important pollinators - bees.

Director at Malanda Early Learning Michelle Hanlon, said that the process was easy and they can’t wait to install the gardens.

“We applied for the grant online because we wanted to teach the kids about a good sustainable system,” she said.

“The kids are very excited because they get to watch the gardens grow and harvest them when they are ready.”

Ms Hanlon also said that the practises taken with this grant

will assist them in their future.

“With this grant, we will be able to embed sustainable practices into the kids and they will hopefully take that away with them as they grow older,” she said.

“They are so excited to get a worm farm and some garden beds here for them to learn in.”

Malanda Early Learning will soon have their gardens installed and will continue to teach their students about sustainability.

THE newly established Mareeba and Communities Family Healthcare has received a substantial donation from the Mareeba Old Players and Supporters last week.

Members from the newly established health board, MOPS and Mareeba Shire Council gathered outside of the Mareeba Medical Clinic last Friday, exchanging a cheque valued in at $4250.

As the board is just freshly founded the money will be put away for a later date once the board is fully up and running.

“The purpose of the board was to merge with the local clinic and change its structure to a not-for-profit company,” Mareeba and Communities Family Healthcare board member Ross Cardillo said.

“We believe that way we have better opportunities to attract additional health services and funding to our town and additional doctors.

“The money will go into the account and will be used at a later

date.” The board will be advocating for new health services.

Tablelanders receive funding for art and culture projects

EIGHT applicants received a total of $24,292 in funding for art and culture projects in the latest round of Tablelands Regional Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

“It’s great to see another group of artists being supported by this important funding and enhancing the vibrancy of arts and culture in our region,” RADF Chair Councillor Annette Haydon said.

“The broad range of projects approved in this round include cultural tourism promotion, festivals, murals and a romance novel.

“The next round of funding for large projects (up to $5000) opens in August 2021 but you can apply for a Quick Response Small Grant (up to $1000) at any time.

“Details and application forms are on our website,” Councillor Haydon said.

John de Rooy of Atherton Tableland Photography believes RADF is a very important part of the arts scene in the region.

“RADF enables artists to develop their skills and bring their works to fulfillment to benefit the whole community.

“I am hoping, by highlighting all the amazing locations around the tablelands through Screen Queensland, that our region is seen as a superb, unique location attracting filmmakers

from far and wide to make their next feature here,” he said.

Queensland Government Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said that the long standing RADF program would help to boost Queensland’s plan for economic recovery, supporting artists and arts workers with employment opportunities through $4.2 million in funding for regional cultural projects.

Young artists add colour to Atherton’s main street AN empty Atherton Laneway has had a makeover from its youth recently, combining ‘new school’ and ‘old school’ styles together.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) in collaboration with Vocational Partnership Group (VPG), and artist Wally Wallwork displayed the Atherton Now mural on the side of the ITEC building on Atherton’s main street.

The project took six half day sessions and allowed nine of the youth to get their creative juices flowing, express their feelings of the Atherton community and

learn mural art skills.

Wally Wallwork who worked alongside the teen artists said that he aimed to inspire them with community.

“My role was to guide the young artists to represent their community through artwork,” he said.

“I have been a youth project worker for a while and have done a few projects across the Tablelands in the past and love to work with kids.

“On day two we also held a workshop where we had casual conversations about what it means to be a young person in

our community and bring their stories to life through imagery and characters.”

Mr Wallwork said that the mural made a huge impact on the community, even before it was finished.

“The young people had so much compassion and impact on members of the community through their art,” he said.

“They would have conversations with people on the street and ask them about their lives in the community.

“They enjoyed the project so much they really didn’t want it to end and I hope they learnt to

gain confidence in doing more art and will in the future bring more colour to Atherton.”

Lily, Kacey and Matt, three of the program participants, enjoyed working with and learning new skills from Mr Wallwork.

“This was an absolutely amazing experience to get together with other young people and represent our community,” they all said.

“It is sad that it's finished, and we can’t wait to do it again and we are proud of what we’ve done.”

THE Mareeba Leagues Club hosted a special social gathering at the beginning of June, honouring several of their life members and board members.

Bernard O’Shea, Evan McGrath and Darren Jones were acknowledged as life members of the Mareeba Leagues Club.

Paul Johnstone was announced as an additional life member receiving a specially commissioned lapel pin and framed certificate, along with the other life members.

Long term Board Members Gordon Shelton and Michael Dwyer were also acknowledged as they share 35 years of experience as board members.

Several locals were honoured recently at the Mareeba Leagues Club either as life members or long standing board members.

Metrogaine fun is back on Sunday THE Lions Club of Mareeba will be hosting its annual metrogaine again this Sunday at Arnold Park as a way to promote exercise, learning and more about our local community and businesses.

The scavenger hunt style event has previously raised over $30 thousand for the Childhood Cancer Research Foundation and hopes to raise more this year.

Event Coordinator Tom Braes said that anyone of any skill set can participate.

“In the past some people have done it on bikes, but usually a lot of people do the games

on foot,” he said.

“Participants get a sheet of clues and have to work out the answer, which takes them to a place in Mareeba.

“They tick it off and once they finish they come back to Arnold Park to get it checked off and there are cash prizes to be won.”

Mr Braes said that the games will also be a great refresher for locals on what is around the local area and a way to get a bit of fresh air on a Sunday morning.

To participate, head to Arnold Park this Sunday, June 20 at 7.30am to register your team and take part.

This years Metrogaine in Mareeba on Sunday will raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

Revolutionary step for Mango industry

BY RHYS THOMAS MAREEBA has recently become ground zero for a new revolutionary mango growing technique potentially tripling mango yields.

A study took place on the Tablelands spanning over eight years, looking at mango intensification and transforming low

yielding, low density orchards into high yielding, high density orchards.

By making the change and condensing the orchards farmers can see an increase in mango yields from 20 tonnes/ha to 70 tonnes/ha using the same amount of space.

the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) said that initially there was a lot of unused space in mango orchards.

“It’s really reinventing the shape of mango trees,” he said.

“The whole reason we’re doing this is that mango yields are pretty low in the grand scheme of things.

“We’re not utilising the land

very efficiently so this way we are packing these trees in and giving it what we effectively call ‘walls of fruit’.”

Trials for the new high-density method of growing have been on going at the Walkamin DAF research station and other areas including local growers who put their hands up to be a part of the trials and trying their

hand at producing these new orchards.

“It’s really exciting times for the mango industry,” Dr Dickinson said.

“I feel it’s going to make mango growing a much more profitable exercise for growers and it will give them more consistency year to year with their yields.

“Mangoes are a marginal industry at times and a lot of the techniques haven’t really changed that much, but this is a real game changer.”

Farmers use credits to protect the reef SWEET Cane has become the second farming business in Queensland to start selling Reef Credits, securing an additional source of income and protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Sweet Cane is a joint venture between the New South Walesbased McAlary and Anderson families who have owned and operated sugarcane farms south of Tully for the past 15 years.

The farms, located at Euramo and Murrigal, cover an area of more than 650 hectares, with 580 hectares of that land used to grow sugarcane.

In order to create Reef Credits a farmer needs to undertake certain land management activities on their property to reduce the amount of nitrogen and sediment pollution flowing to the Reef.

Reef Credits are measurable, audited water quality outcomes that can be sold to government, corporate or philanthropic buyers who want to support the future of Queensland agriculture and the Reef.

Sweet Cane Director Peter Anderson said the joint venture had earned Reef Credits by reviewing its nutrient application rates with a view to reducing them where they may be surplus to crop requirements, without compromising

productivity.

“Participating in the Reef Credits Scheme has sharpened our focus on only applying nutrients that are required or used by the crop,” Mr Anderson said.

“This includes adequately accounting for the benefit of a legume fallow crop and mill mud/ash applications, so fertiliser is not over applied.

“If less fertiliser can be used without impacting productivity, that means lower costs and high profitability.”

Mr Anderson said he heard about Reef Credits due to wordof-mouth.

“Our neighbours, who we work collaboratively with on a number of fronts, introduced us to the program as they were the first farmers to be issued Reef Credits,” he said.

“We felt this could be a win/ win situation for us financially and for the long-term health of the Reef.

“Once we sell our Reef Credits, we hope the additional income stream will enable us to continue to invest in industry leading technology and equipment to drive improved outcomes for our people, the farms themselves and our surrounding environment.”

Farmers have signed up to be a part of Reef Credits securing them more income and protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Assistance offered for drought prone communities DROUGHT prone communities will now have an extra leg to stand on with the announcement of a new drought resilience program.

The Networks to Build Drought Resilience program hosts a pool of $4.5 million for eligible community groups to access, delivered by the Foun-

dation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR).

The money will be available for in-ground community capacity building projects spread across two sperate funding rounds.

FRRR CEO Natalie Egleton said local community networks are the foundation of resilient

communities.

“Through this program we’re heling to invest in the future of agriculture-dependent regions by enabling them to prepare now for periods of ongoing dryness,” she said.

“A key element of this program will be to build stronger networks and to encourage

greater sharing of learnings and more collaboration within and across networks.”

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David littleproud, said that drought resilience was key in Australian rural communities.

“Strong rural and regional

networks are critical for the drought resilience of Australian agriculture-dependent communities,” he said.

“It is the community leaders, mentors, local organisations and networks in farming communities that drive change and offer the support when needed.

“FRRR’s networks and experience will help us to ensure the investment is well targeted and effective and bring in philanthropic co-funding.”

Applications to apply for this new funding are now open and close on July 5, 2021 with successful recipients to be announced in October.

THE horticulture industry’s night of nights returns in 2021, with a date and venue announced for the FNQ Growers Annual Gala Dinner.

Postponed last year due to the COVID health pandemic, this year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 3 at the Mareeba United Football Club.

Also making a return is the prestigious Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award, which will be announced at the dinner.

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said while horticulture continued to go from strength to strength, the region’s growers had shared in the challenges brought about by the pandemic.

“A night like this gives the industry and our supporters a chance to reflect and celebrate our success, despite the challenging environment in which we farm in,” Mr Moro said.

How the locals feel about the new wombat crossings on Byrnes Street in Mareeba...

HOW can anyone from the Main Roads Department justify this butchering of Mareeba’s Main Street?

These wombat crossings are too high.

They should be ripped up and poured with a gradual rise. The impact on produce, the bruising of cattle and the noise factor are very concerning.

In reality the only crossing that needed attention was the Post Office location. With the installation of lights there was no need to alter any other crossing in the Main Street.

We have been thrown the scraps of funding from the state Labor government, when in reality the only way to reduce the high-density traffic through the main street, is to construct a heavy vehicle bypass.

I have been given to understand that Mareeba Shire Council has no authority over TMR as Byrnes Street is a main road and comes under their jurisdiction. Yet MSC Deputy Mayor and Traffic Advisory Committee Chair Kevin Davies said: they have listened to us and TMR have delivered what is needed’. Even Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said: ‘these upgrades will improve pedestrian safety whilst crossing the road’. I don’t think so!

For the heavy trucks that have to drive through Byrnes Street, the vibrations set up by driving over the raised crossings could affect the foundations of the buildings and the recently installed mains water pipes. Where

is the Mareeba Bypass Mr Davies?

When my wife and I visited Mareeba in the late 1990’s, we were shown Byrnes Street and I immediately realised this was ‘parking heaven’.

Parking on both sides of the road and in the centre and for free. In the last few years parking spaces in Byrnes Street have disappeared due to installation of traffic lights, ‘beautification’ by the Council, and now by the wombat crossings.

With the move to increase the population by more subdivisions being sold, the London adage ‘ if you can’t park, you don’t go’ may influence people who want to live here.

So, are Mareeba residents having their voices heard?

ON Sunday, June 20, Mareeba Lions will be holding the 2021 Metrogaine and Biggest BBQ to raise money specifically for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

The event is assured to be a success with fantastic local support ensuring substantial funds will be raised for this great cause.

All are welcome to come along from 7.30am at Arnold Park, register and enter the event. All you have to do is work out the quiz questions find the location and earn your points.

It is a low impact event that just involves getting out having a walk around and enjoying the company of other likeminded people. All in a good cause.

Lions Australia has been supporting childhood cancer research at least as far back as 1976. Unfortunately every year in Australia more than 900 children are still diagnosed with cancer and three Australian Children die from cancer every week.

Among childhood illnesses, cancer remains

the most common cause of death in Australia.

Since 1996, Lions Australia has shown outstanding commitment contributing over $5 million to childhood cancer research.

This effort has resulted in, amongst other things, safer and more effective blood stem cell transplantation for leukaemia patients following chemotherapy which can lead to shorter hospitalisation and more rapid recovery.

Lions have done a lot but the job is not over because we believe every child has a right to a healthy life.

The Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine and BBQ is an annual fundraising event undertaken by the club specifically to raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

Funds raised will be used to help achieve the ALCCRF’S mission to prevent kids with cancer dying by donating these funds to the best scientific and clinical childhood cancer research conducted right across Australia.

At the last meeting the Club made a number of donations. $1221.00 was

donated to the Mareeba Heritage Centre to assist with the purchase of tools for the volunteer workers. $500.00 was also donated to the Heritage Centre to offset the insurance excess paid when the defibrillator that had been donated by the club was stolen. $500.00 was also donated to the Mareeba State Primary School Auslan Signing student choir.

Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion.

Method

1. Place the capsicum in the bowl of a large food processor. Process until smooth.

2. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

Add the capsicum puree, stock, canned tomatoes and sugar.

3. Increase heat to high and bring to the boil.

Reduce heat to medium and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 6 minutes or until the soup thickens slightly.

4. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Serve with a dollop of olive tapenade and sprinkle with the croutons.

Local derby match up

DAVIES Park will be the place to be this Saturday night as the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters go head-to-head in their first matchup on the CDRL calendar, the first game in the Tableland Cup. With Mareeba coming off a loss and the Roosters on a high from their first win the game is not to be missed as both teams look to make a statement come Saturday night.

The town rivals faced each other early in the season for a trial match, which ended in a draw.

Mareeba Gladiators captain coach Trent Barnard said that he was looking forward to the upcoming match.

“Atherton is a good side and its always full on come derby time,” he said.

“I know all these boys get up for it and I’m still not fully used to it.

“It’s two Tablelands sides going at it and last time the crowd was massive so I can’t imagine what it will be like this time.”

Opposition captain Jermaine Pedro is excited for the upcoming match and expects some fierce competition.

“We’re hoping to draw confidence out of our win last week, we still have things to work on but now we’re a lot more confident,” he said.

“It’s always pretty hostile playing in Mareeba the crowd really get behind their team.

“Out on the field it doesn’t matter where both teams are coming on the ladder it’s on from kick off, and they just come out and try and belt you.”

SPORT Roosters first win of 2021 season A special old players game between Mossman and Mareeba preceeded the Ivanhoes vs Mareeba match up last Saturday night.

Gators fall behind Ivanhoes THE Mareeba Gladiators have been struck another blow as they faced Ivanhoes at Davies Park last Saturday, going down with a two-point difference losing 14-16.

Davies Park was alive last Saturday as the stands were overflowing with spectators for the clash, many there for a special Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) exhibition match.

Preceding the main event of the night the MOPS got onto to field with the old players from Mossman, getting rid of some cobwebs and bringing an energy to the crowd and the field.

The A-grade match up between the Gators and Ivanhoes got off to a slow start before Mareeba’s Sonny Rea opened the score.

Ivanhoes played the patient game as they used their fitness to tire down the Mareeba side, Ivanhoes answered back in time with a try of their own.

Gators George Major was the next player to get over the line and things were looking up for Mareeba just five minutes before the half.

Ivanhoes turned up the heat after the half using their tried and tested quick run and gun style, breaking through the gators line scoring their second try quickly followed by a third.

A magnificent full field try by 39-year-old Dryston Hayes lit the fire underneath the Gators with the conversion barely missing, bouncing off the post securing the Gators demise.

The game ended at 14-16 with successful conversions the

obvious deciding factor in the matchup.

Mareeba Gladiators captain/ coach Trent Barnard said despite going down it was a fantastic game to watch.

“The last few weeks we’ve started to turn things around and tonight anyone could have won,” he said.

“If we would have kicked our goals we would have won same as last weeks, but I can’t put that on poor Trezman he’s only young and he does a lot of good stuff for us.

“There were a lot of good signs there, the balls just not bouncing our way.”

Up next for the Gators they face off against the Atherton Roosters at Davies Park for the second game in the Tableland Cup.

Roosters Glenn Dumbrell looks to escape the Edmonton defence on Saturday night.

FOURTEEN tries were scored in an entertaining match and in the end it was the Atherton Roosters who held off a fast finishing Edmonton Storm to take the points 40-38 at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

It was the Roosters first win in the 2021 first grade premiership race but their poor second half effort nearly cost them the celebration victory.

Edmonton opened the match scoring with a try after only

three minutes of play before the Roosters turned it on with their best forty minutes for the year and delivered six unanswered tries to set up a 34-6 lead at the break. Glenn Dumbrell and Ty Grogan both scored doubles in the home sides try feast and the Roosters went to the sheds looking very confident.

However the restart was all Edmonton as they started to chase the Roosters down with three quick tries and were back in the match trailing 34-22 at the

60th minute.

The Roosters looked to have lost their intensity and were now missing tackles and dropping the ball early in the tackle count which was helping Edmonton to stay in the contest.

Nigel Woodleigh’s try at the 65th minute took some pressure off the Roosters for a while but Edmonton hit back with three tries in the closing minutes to now trail 40-38 with three minutes of play remaining.

Edmonton went close to snatching victory in the final minute after another Roosters ball handling error gave the visitors a final crack at the Roosters line.

The 80 minute siren saved the under pressure Roosters and they had escaped with a two point win.

SPORT Bray races to number one A YOUNG Mareeba racer who has spent just six months in the driver’s seat has been crowned the Queensland champion after the SKAA Queensland Titles held recently.

Bray Taylor, an eight-year-old Mareeba boy travelled down to Maryborough for the championship at the beginning of June, competing in the sub junior category.

Bray’s inspiration for racing, besides wanting to go fast, came from watching his family race at the Mareeba Speedway.

“I said to mum that looks like a good sport so then they surprised me when I came back from school with a go kart,” he said.

After participating in just six races locally Bray and his family made the decision to nominate him for the titles.

“I thought I could do well,” Bray said.

“It was a lot of fun and I want to go to the Australian Titles next year.”

Bray not only won the championship he was also the fastest driver around the track for every one of his races with a fastest time of 18.645, 0.019 seconds in front of Australia’s No. 2 in that age group.

“You know the times they are going and normally achieve so we had a good idea if he could compete or not,” Mum Jess Taylor said.

“We did not expect this, he is naturally talented.”

Now Bray has set his sights on the upcoming Australian Titles to be announced next year, until then he will hold his Queensland Champion title.

Mareeba’s Bray Taylor could be Australia’s next No 1 go kart racer after winning the Queensland Title just six months after first sitting in the seat.
