The rodeo was originally cancelled in February, but the gradual easing of COVID restrictions has allowed the one day only – Saturday July 10 – event to feature an action-packed day of bullriding and several other associated favourites.

While the annual street parade isn’t happening officials continue to work through logistics and planning matters to make this year’s version the best it can be in the COVID circumstances we currently live in.

BY RHYS THOMAS AFTER 19 years of bringing joy to the residents of Atherton and the wider tablelands, Tim and Leanne Narbrough have decided to hang up their jewels and call it a day.

Atherton Showcase Jewellers in Atherton Square has been owned and operated by Tim and Leanne since they bought the business in 2002.

Before this Tim made a name for himself working as a manager in the next-door Woolworths for 25 years, after pressure mounted to relocate Tim decided to strike out

on his own and buy Bradford Jewellers and make it his own.

Since then, Tim and Leanne have never looked back as they found great joy in their work and seeing customers become friends over the many years of business.

“It was very rewarding, it’s been a delight dealing with young couple’s engagements, marriages and all those sorts of things,” Tim said.

“The jewellery business is a very event driven industry like anniversaries, birthdays, valentine’s day and Mother’s Day. “We certainly tried to pro-

vide something for everybody.”

Atherton Showcase Jewellers not only brought excellent service, but they also brought Pandora to Atherton in 2008, one of their claims to fame.

With their lease ending Tim and Leanne saw it as a time to consider their future, and while they were still young enough they decided to tick some things off their bucket list.

“We’ve committed wholly to the business and now it’s time to break free and live a little on our terms,” Tim said.

Family visits, travelling

and holidays are just some of the plans that the Narbrough’s have planned for their retirement with their first trip planned for July.

Tim and Leanne have worked tirelessly in the Atherton Square for the better part of their whole lives, enjoying the journey every step of the way.

“For all our loyal customers over 19 years, we thank you.”

Lobbying set to continue for new Mareeba to Cairns road

Rodeo makes comeback

BY MICHAEL WARREN THE State Government’s recent easing of social distancing regulations has paved the way for bullriding and event fans across the region to receive the best possible mid-year present – the Mareeba Rodeo is back on and will be held in the coming months – albeit in a reduced fashion.

Mareeba Rodeo was previously cancelled in February because of what officials announced at the time was “a lack of funds, manpower and infrastructure required to run the rodeo within Queensland Health regulations”.

However, the State Govern-

ment’s relaxation of restrictions around the amount of people allowed to gather in outdoor public spaces in Queensland on April 15 fast-tracked the Rodeo Association to overturn its earlier decision and proceed with delivering a one-day COVID compliant event on July 10.

“The easing of social distancing restrictions has allowed us to put on a one-day event in the coming months,” Association president Peter Brown told The Express.

“In order to do so it’s imperative we do everything by the book, regarding following COVID safe regulations, so there will be a few changes.

“At this stage there will still

be a full-blown rodeo on the Saturday. The Saturday and Saturday night has always been the pinnacle of our event and that will be the same this time.

“We’ll still hold the cabaret after the bullriding, but on this occasion there will be no down town parade in Mareeba.

“We’re also still determining what entertainment we can potentially put on, on the Friday night.

“That may include a band, or perhaps even a parade of some sort at the Rodeo grounds.

“Regarding the rides or carnival side of things, again, that’s something we continue to work through and have discussions about, like I say, we

need to ensure we’re doing everything by the book and following all event rules and State Government COVID safety protocols."

The Mareeba Rodeo and Festival is one of the most popular events in the region, regularly attracting more than 14,000 fans over the two days.

Confirmed to date is a full one day rodeo program, cabaret with live music and camping.

Not happening in 2021 is the State of Origin and down town street parade.

Friday night entertainment and confirmation of potential show rides and other festival activities are to be determined.

KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has expressed his disappointment that no significant allocations were confirmed for the further planning of the proposed Kuranda Bypass Road between Mareeba and Cairns following Federal budget announcements in Canberra.

Despite that Mr Katter is adamant he’s still doing some serious behind the scenes lobbying to ensure the project continues to gain momentum.

“My office is continuing to negotiate with the State and Federal Ministers (about the need for the road),” he told The Express from Canberra.

“A Queensland Government study is underway; and once complete we will seek to get federal funding for design and engineering work.

“We currently have 60,000 residents trapped. It’s not an acceptable situation.”

Meanwhile Mr Katter said it was excellent to see confirmation of the $10B Government guarantee to make insurance more affordable in Northern Australia, with $2.4M allocated for a

taskforce to establish a reinsurance pool by July 2022.

“It’s now a major priority for the KAP to ensure that this reinsurance pool is not derailed,” he explained.

“I will be working closely with the local brokers to ensure we get the right outcome. I’m placing the Government on notice.”

In health matters, Government for the first time in regional areas like the Kennedy Electorate will implement a progressive incentive schedule, which increases bulk billing payments for doctors based on remoteness.

The $68.5m scheme has been welcomed by Mr Katter.

“I’ve been consulting numerous doctors in my area including Mareeba’s Dr Grant Manypeney and Gordonvale’s Lisa Fraser, and this is exactly what we wanted,” Mr Katter said.

“I’ll be meeting the Health Minister this month to go over the exact details, but this is very promising.

Under the previous scheme areas like the Gold Coast were considered the same as Hughenden.”

Tablelands granted funding for water assessment $3M in funding towards a water assessment on the Tablelands is set to begin after Member for Hill Shane Knuth was notified

by Minister for Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water Glen Butcher the electorate would be one of only three in the state to be granted funding.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said he was advised in a written letter from the Minister the North Johnstone diversion project would also be assessed as part of the Tablelands regional water assessment.

Mr Knuth and Federal MP Bob Katter have been strong advocates of the North Johnstone transfer project.

Several irrigators, present and past members of the Tablelands Regional Council have also been lobbying for this project for many years.

"When Tinaroo Dam was constructed, it was acknowledged at the time that it would not meet future water demands on the Tablelands,” Mr Knuth said.

“As such the North Johnstone transfer was designed to provide an extra supplement of water to meet this future demand.

“If constructed, it would be a huge asset for not only irrigators but recreational water users.”

Kennedy Member Bob Katter was happy with the developments.

“I will be seeking meetings with locals to ensure when the North Johnstone transfer goes ahead we base it on the Hughenden model, which means local owner-operators who cultivate and produce from the land,” Mr Katter told The Express.

“It also means no foreignowned farms, no major corporation owned farms and no absentee landlords. We get the benefit.

“We've got to get proactive to ensure that the benefit comes to the people of Mareeba and Atherton.

“If the people want security or more water, then that's the way it'll be. If they want to bring some new land under cultivation, then that's the way it'll be.”

The current works on Byrnes Street in Mareeba is causing confusion among residents.

Byrnes Street works cause confusion

WORKS have started on the newly approved wombat crossing in the Main Street of Mareeba where they have been met with some confusion.

The decision to install these new crossing among other upgrades was approved recently, however the move to concrete over some parking spaces in the main street was left out.

A spokesman for the Department of Transport and Main Roads said that these changes were done in the interest of safety.

“We need to ensure road users have a clear view on and around these crossings without parked vehicles obscuring their view,” he said.

“The removal of some on-

street car parks is in the interests of safety and follows our design standards. The new crossings will significantly improve safety on Mareeba’s main street.

“Before the start of the works, we contacted businesses on Byrnes Street to advise about the changes to parking.”

Mareeba Shire Council

declined to make a comment, however on their Facebook page they stated, “The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has commenced works on the safety upgrade of Byrnes Street Mareeba. Council is not carrying out these works.”

Knuth questions May water release HILL Member Shane Knuth has questioned the State Government’s decision to release water for environmental flows when there has already been significant rainfall and mass flooding in the Tablelands region.

Sunwater has released an average of 395 megalitres of water from Tinaroo Dam every day so far this month and could increase that amount to 500ML a day which would severely impact farmers and recreational users in the dry months to come.

“Already the Barron River has had at least four to five

floods this year and is being replenished by springs and creek flows,” Mr Knuth said.

“Farmers are extremely concerned as to why Sunwater is releasing water after the recent wet and I am outraged that they are releasing such an exorbitant amount.

“People are excited to see dam levels reach over 90 per cent. However, as we all know these levels can drop significantly, over the winter period, and if Sunwater continues to release high volumes of water.

“We don’t want to see water

allocations for farmers cut in six months’ time when it could have been avoided.”

Mr Knuth said he had been in contact with Sunwater and has written to the Minister questioning the amount of water they are releasing straight after significant rainfall.

“It is ridiculous to throw this water away. Farmers are planning for their crops now which are to be planted in six months’ time. If water is going to be released now dam levels could drop significantly and this will affect water allocations,” he

said.

“This is why we need urgent approval and funding for the North Johnstone Transfer to go ahead.”

He said that the Tablelands needed water security, not be worried that allocations will be cut every year.

About 30 years ago the maximum release of water was 150 mega litres a day.

Mr Knuth is asking why has Sunwater now easily doubling that amount of water for release?

Chairman dismisses claims for dialysis units at Mareeba Hospital THE Chair of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board (CHHHS) has again dismissed urgent claims Mareeba needs dialysis/renal units at Mareeba hospital.

In stern written correspondence from CHHHS Chair Clive Skarott addressed to Save Mareeba Hospital Services Action Group (SMHSAG) Spokesperson Denis McKinley on May 7 Mr Skarott said: “it has been explained to you and SMHSAG on many occasions and in writing there are insufficient numbers to sustain a safe in-centre dialysis service at Mareeba Hospital.”

Mr Skarott’s direct response comes after confirmation two unused dialysis units at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre will instead soon be relocated for use

at Mossman District Hospital.

SMHSAG has also confirmed its intentions to display a prominent public noticeboard in Mareeba about the group’s push to secure the units.

SMHSAG claims Mareeba Hospital remains the only level three hospital in Far North Queensland without a dialysis unit.

Mr Skarott said CHHHS regularly undertakes service and planning to ensure services are planned and developed in a sustainable way, prioritized according to health need, to ensure effective use of current and future resources.

Mr Skarott further explained that “CHHHS will continually monitor the situation in Mareeba and an in-centre satellite dialysis

service will always be taken into consideration with any future service planning."

Upon receiving Mr Skarott’s written reply, Mr McKinley sent back an email on the afternoon of May 7 telling the chairman “once again politics internally seems to be back on the agenda between the Atherton District Hospital to the detriment of the Mareeba District Hospital thus the community of Mareeba and surrounding area,” wrote McKinley.

“Until open dialogue occurs between CHHHS CEO, CHHHS Board and the Qld Government Minister for Health Ms Yvette D’Ath the public lobbying will continue and I can assure you the general public are right behind this cause.”

Tablelands gift card set to invigorate businesses

New splash park set for construction in 2022 A new new gift scheme has been created on the Tablelands to encourage local spending.

HARDWORKING local entrepreneur and Atherton Chamber of Commerce president Bree Hargraves has created an enterprising gift card scheme she hopes will invigorate local businesses and encourage Tablelanders to shop and spend locally.

In simple terms Tablelanders can purchase a shop Tablelands gift card at a chosen value of between $10-$1000 and then use the card at participating outlets across the region.

The cards are a great gift idea or could be purchased and used as prizes or bonus incentives for staff and employees.

“It is often said that $100 spent locally equates to a $180 impact on the local economy due to the multiplier effect,” Ms Hargraves told The Express.

“That is when money is spent locally some of that money – about 40% – is then reinvested

into other local stores and so on – about seven times.

“The Shop Tablelands gift cards help facilitate the multiplier effect by ensuring that whenever one of our cards are purchased, this money then needs to be spent back in local stores.”

Local businesses that haven’t registered for the program but are interested in doing so before the looming end of month deadline can express their interest by contacting the Atherton Chamber of Commerce.

Ms Hargraves said once the cards have been designed and printed a team of volunteers will visit participating businesses to activate their EFTPOS terminals on to the closed loop system.

The cards are expected to be in use around the region by July.

opportunity to be a part of the gift card scheme.

Mareeba siblings Samson and Clementine Heber listened to Ms Lui confirm her election commitment of a splash park is well underway for Mareeba.

Shire “The Mareeba Council has been allocated $1.5 million for the splash park and is currently considering incorporating this into a broader upgrade of aquatic facilities in Mareeba,” Ms Lui said.

“Scoping, design and construction of the project is likely to occur for the remain-

der of 2021 with construction to occur in the 2022 calendar year.

“Staff from the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning have met with the Council to provide support for the commencement of this project.”

“I would like to acknowledge and commend the Mareeba Shire Council’s key role and commitment to this project.

“I know locals are very excited about the splash park and I am pleased to deliver this for the many families in the community to enjoy.”

Mareeba Council also advised of the positive developments.

“Ms Lui confirmed the funding (for the splash park) with (Mareeba) Council

during a recent meeting,” a Council spokesperson told The Express.

“Council is waiting for the funding agreement from the State and will then be able to proceed with the planning of a project.”

Ms Lui’s promise to deliver Mareeba’s splash park comes on the back of last year’s promise by the Palaszczuk Government to commit to the project upon being re-elected.

During last October’s announcement Ms Lui said splash parks were an important part of life in the Far North and of Queensland’s COVID recovery plan.

“There’s no better way of escaping Far North Queensland’s tropical heat than a splash park,” Ms Lui said.

Better paths on the way

MAREEBA Shire Council has confirmed it will continue to update and beautify its local paths and parks including improvement works to areas around the popular Bicentennial Lakes precinct.

“In relation to Basalt Gully (Bicentennial Lakes), a master plan has been developed and Council is making continuous improvements to repair and upgrade the footpaths around the lakes,” a Council spokesperson told The Express.

Community interest has been strong in the Bicentennial Lakes works with many residents discussing the expected completion dates for the project online.

The improvement works to local paths and parks follows

Council’s recent community survey conducted to assist Mareeba Shire Council’s parks and open spaces strategy development.

Most recently Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin thanked residents and community groups for taking the time to provide feedback.

“We received over 400 responses which will help drive our strategic vision for Council’s parks and open spaces strategy,” Cr Toppin said.

“The community feedback has given Council a better understanding of how the community currently uses our parks and open spaces and their ideas for these recreation areas.

“The information will and has assisted us developing actions and priorities under the parks and open spaces strategy.”

Report identifies benefits of increased water infrastructure

A NEWLY released report has identified the critical need for more dams to be built across the Tablelands and Far North as solid water infrastructure continues to play a key role in population and agricultural growth.

The Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) commissioned report, “The long-term analysis of the role of dams” analysed the economic importance of dams and the way in which they’re assessed and how decisions to allocate capital to water investments are being made.

The reported concluded current assessment models in Queensland used for dam infrastructure projects are not fit for purpose.

The report claimed the identified failings are linked to a ‘full cost recovery’ approach taken by the State whereby for projects to be deemed viable, the full costs of dam construction and operation must be fully recovered from water users within 30 years of a build.

“Dams have an expected lifespan of 150 years, not 30 years, and our research clearly shows that strong growth happens long after a dam is built,” FNQROC chair Michael Kerr told The Express from the banks of Lake Placid.

“Regions with dams have been proven to have a stronger and more resilient economic base long-term with the benefits growing exponentially well past their initial 30 years.”

“It’s been there over six years and the productivity that’s been gained from that has been phenomenal for the Tablelands region, particularly in terms of agriculture.

“The spin off from those communities is because agriculture is so strong, there’s that economic benefit for the community, there’s population coming to the area and there’s increased employment opportunities.”

KEY REPORT FINDINGS • The assessment timeframe of 30 years for dams is fundamentally flawed; • The traditional cost benefit analysis model fails to capture long term direct and indirect economic benefits of dams; • Economic changes enabled by water security are dynamic and not able to be predicted by policy makers; • Water security unlocks other capabilities in the region such as advanced manufacturing; • Revenue assumptions based on what existing/ potential users say they’re willing to pay are not reflective of market forces; and • The full cost recovery approach ignores the increased taxation revenues received by the State as a result of increased economic activity in the region.

Disability service calls for community support A LOCAL disability service on the Tablelands is looking to the community for support as they attempt to secure some inclusion bikes for their disabled clients.

Disability Matters in Atherton is currently in the process of securing funding to purchase three inclusion bikes for their clients, these bikes help keep them fit and engage their social skills.

The company has applied for a grant but there is a five-month waiting period before they hear back whether they were successful or not.

During this time Disability Matters is asking the community for support in the form of donations so that they can purchase safety equipment and secure a safe place to store the bikes.

Sondra Diezmann, a disability support worker with Disability Matters, said that these bikes are ridden by more than one person and are accompanied by a support worker while on rides.

“People that can’t normally get out on a bike they can get out with a worker, enjoy what bike riding has to offer and see different parts of Atherton,” she said.

“They get into the community and draw attention, community members would see these bikes, come up and have a closer look and perhaps speak to the clients and the worker accompanying them.

“One of the goals for a lot of our clients is to have better community interaction.”

The money raised will not only go towards securing equipment and storage, but if the grant is unsuccessful, Disability Matters will be purchasing some of the bikes regardless.

Disability Matters is also searching for a place to store these bikes and has asked anyone with a spare container or some storage to get into contact with them.

More vaccines for local GPs

Bikers dress dapper for charity THE Highland Motorcycle Restorers Club (HMRC) will be dressing up for the upcoming 10th anniversary Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride raising money for prostate cancer and depression awareness.

The ride takes place every year and this year marks 10 years since their first ride, so they have aptly named this year’s ride, ‘Decade of Dapper’.

Participating riders dress up in outfits such as suits, formal shirt and ties, clothing you would more than likely wear at a wedding and not on the open road.

President of the HMRC Don Sheppard said that the HMRC has been involved in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride since its inception.

“This ride fits nicely with us as a charity motorcycle organization as well,” he said.

Men and women riders from the Tablelands will meet at the Pitt Stop service Station Yungaburra at 11.00 am on Sunday, to ride to the Mountain View hotel to meet up with Cairns riders.

General Practitioners (GP) clinics across the Far North will be receiving a push in the weekly COVID vaccine doses they receive to administer to their patients.

GP clinics across the nations have been administering the COVID vaccine to residents since the vaccines touched down in Australia earlier this year.

With a strict guideline or ‘roadmap’ of who gets what vaccine and when the clinics have been administering the set number of vaccines they are given.

Now clinics will be receiving 100 additional doses to administer to their patients when advised by the government’s roadmap.

Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch said the increased doses would give Cairns

and Far North Queensland residents more choice and local GPs more capacity.

“Primary care vaccination sites have now administered more than 1.2 million vaccinations, more than half the total so far,” he said.

“This is an amazing achievement in such a short amount of time and a true reflection of the capacity of the sector.

Mr Entsch is also imploring residents that are eligible for their vaccine to come forward as soon possible to protect them and their families.

“To all Far North Queensland residents, please come forward and get vaccinated,” he said.

“It will help protect you, your family, your friends, your workmates, everybody. It will keep you, and the country COVID safe.”

MORE parking spaces in Mareeba's CBD have been made available after works were completed on the new Railway Avenue Carpark, almost doubling the current parking capacity.

YVA brings artwork to Lake Eacham THE Yungaburra Village Artists (YVA) have opened their latest exhibition at the Frond Gallery and Cafe in Lake Eacham with a variety of media types from acrylic to 3D materials.

After showing off their groups work at the Tablelands Regional Gallery, the 16 YVA members have decided to go smaller and more personal by displaying the work at the local cafe.

YVA member Alison Faigniez said that she hopes the exhibition will give Lake Eacham an extra boost of tourism.

“We are hoping that along with the lake and the cafe it-

self, our exhibition will bring more people to the area to see the work of our small group,” she said.

“We all love our work and we love to hear the feedback of the public of our hard work.

“We also enjoy seeing our work in a different setting that isn’t our work spaces, seeing it on display is truly wonderful.”

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday June 2 until Sunday June 27 at the Frond at 198 Lakes Drive, lake Eacham.

Destiny Café in Atherton was packed full of mothers and daughters last Saturday as they hosted a charity high tea.

High tea for mothers and charity A SPECIAL Mother’s Day high tea was held at Atherton’s Destiny Café last weekend with the aim of celebrating mothers and donating to charity.

Over 60 people attended the event held last Saturday to munch down on some snacks and listen to some local, homegrown artists.

The high tea doubled as a charity event for locally based charity Regained which assists children in western Kenya who are disabled orphaned or living in poverty.

The $1400 raised will go towards helping these children access education and medical services.

National volunteer week is Australia’s largest annual recognition of the six million volunteers who selflessly give more than 600 million hours to assist and help others in all types of life activities and en-

This year’s theme is recognise and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in our lives, reconnect to what is important by giving our time to help others and reimagine how we better support volunteers and communities they help.

In light of such a meaningful week The Express wanted to highlight and recognise the efforts of a community member that captures what Volunteer week is all about.

For more than 13 years Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan has selflessly dedicated his time to overseeing the successful running of one of the most popular events in the region.

For Mr Duncan, being part of something that brings general happiness to so many people is what it’s all about.

“I get a real sense of satisfaction being involved in the Field Days, we get to put on an event that is of interest to the community but important-

ly, we also get to raise money for a number of really worthwhile causes,” he explained to The Express.

“Without volunteers events like this simply wouldn’t run, so I’m always very appreciative of those that give their time to help events like the Field Days and all the others that are held in the various communities around the area.

“Volunteering is a really enjoyable experience.”

THE Carpentaria Shire Council has filled an empty seat at the table after a Normanton schoolteacher was elected to be the newest councillor after a recent by-election.

Doug Thomas will now fill the shoes of past councillor Peter Wells who stepped down in March of this year.

Mr Thomas was elected by a margin of over 100 votes receiving nearly 34 per cent of the votes following the official

count.

Being a teacher at the Normanton TAFE campus, a pastor of the Normanton Christian Fellowship and the secretaries for both the Lamberr Wungarch Justice Group and the local bowls club weren’t enough for Mr Thomas.

Now he will enact his vision as a newly elected councillor with focuses on housing, youth issues and tourism within the shire.

BY ELLIE FINK MAREEBA Animal Refuge has made the desperate cry for cat and kitten food with the population of cats and dogs increasing rapidly in their shelter.

The Shelter put out a message on Facebook and Instagram in the first week of May and have since received many generous puppy food donations, but cat and kitten food still lacks.

Manager Jennifer Walsh said that the situation has left her desperate to feed their new kittens and their parents.

“For the last two months we have been pretty loaded with big litters of puppies all at once and we are going through food really quickly,” she said.

“We have had a good response to the puppy food, but on the same token the numbers of cats and kittens we have is absolutely balloony.

“Normally we have

regular donations from the public but we do need to buy a lot food which takes away funds from the really important stuff such as vaccinations, micro chipping, de-sexing and worming Manager in training Felicity Pollard (Pictured with a little hungry kitty), who made the call online, says that there’s still much to do.

“I put a call out on Facebook and Instagram and there was a big response for the puppy food, we even had one man donate $100 worth of puppy food,” she said.

“We like to use wet foods in particular, we don’t really like dry foods.”

A LEADING Far North Queensland hiker has created a ground-breaking initiative and implemented key measures that could potentially save lives of lost, trapped, or injured hikers in need of immediate assistance and rescue.

Cairns Come Hike and Explore Facebook page moderator Steven Dangaard has consulted with local Government officials to encourage hikers to record their hikes and later submit their GPX files to a specific email address.

The submitted GPX file would be then accessed and used by search and rescue teams to perform accurate and timely search and rescue missions in remote and rarely hiked loca-

tions.

“There have been many instances in the past where local search and rescue have had to push into remote and difficult locations to extract hikers,” Mr Dangaard said.

“These locations can pose significant challenges for the rescue teams on the ground trying to coordinate and navigate extractions, especially if these locations are unknown to them.

“You just can’t beat local knowledge; there are many hikers on this page that push into very remote locations and do record their hikes on GPS devices.

“Having an (available) database of all the traversed hiking trails will greatly enhance local police and SES’s capability to plan and execute difficult recov-

eries.”

Hikers are encouraged to submit their files to SARCairns@police.qld.gov.au. Under no circumstances will the files by used for private use or public distribution.

Ideally the email would include the name of the hike, its start and end points and points of interest, if possible, marked as waypoints, along with the attached GPX file and descriptions of the trail.

The Cairns Come Hike and Explore page has more than 13,000 followers, including those from towns right across The Tablelands region.

Young, local family face worst of times

BY SALLY TURLEY SINCE she was just 15 years old and he was the “boy who lived around the corner,” Nigel Taylor has been Becky's rock.

He helped her escape from an abusive situation in her family home and has made it his business to look after her ever since.

Nigel has always been a practical, outdoorsy guy who was happy to work 60 hours a week to provide for his family and even happier to spend every available minute of his spare time camping, fishing and pig hunting in the bush.

When Nigel was mining, he loved nothing better after finishing his 10 day shifts, than heading up around Cooktown on his days off to fish, swim and camp with Becky and their 3 children, Tymika (11), Riley (8) and Keyon (5).

“He never stopped,” Becky said, "sometimes his energy levels used to do my head in, but nothing like now, seeing him struggling to do the most basic physical task, being bound to those four walls and sleeping most of the time."

In 2016, Nigel was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM), when a massive tumour, the size of a tennis ball was found in his head. The tumour was removed during surgery and treated with chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to control this aggressive and debilitating disease.

By 2017 he was in remission with a prognosis of around 14 months to live. Three years later, Becky said they had begun to quietly hope they had

cheated the odds and beat the death sentence Nigel had been living under.

By September that year, the GBM was back. Nigel returned to the operating table, but the tentacle-like tumours of this most aggressive of cancers advance rapidly and are hard to remove surgically. The operation was only partially successful and he was started on chemotherapy to prolong his life.

Last month, Nigel was hospitalised for seizures, a symptom often associated with the 'end of life' phase of the disease. An MRI showed his cancer had spread to his cerebral spinal fluid, a condition known as leptomeningial disease characterised by indications such as difficulty thinking, swallowing and speaking, double vision, pain and weakness.

At this stage, Nigel's life expectancy was reduced from months to just weeks. His mind has been rapidly deteriorating with the onset of dementia symptoms. Nigel's wish was to stay home as long as possible and Becky struggles constantly with the question of "why him?"

“We wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. The reoccurrence was so dreadful after living in fear for years every time we had to wait for new MRI results."

Becky said it broke her heart to hear their son Riley pleading for one last fishing trip with his dad.

“Nigel had taken him camping at the Walsh River and he longed to share that time again with his father saying "even if

you can't take your boat Dad, we could just sit on the bank together and fish."

He has always been my strength and so I am trying not to let him see how much this is hurting. He tells me that he believes in me, that I will have the strength to do this, so I am just trying to deal with each day as it comes.

For this 'jack of all trades' who loved sushi, the occasional beer and had a real sweet tooth, this all started with a few headaches.

"We didn't realise how bad this was and this has taught me how important it is to listen to your body and not delay that visit to the doctor.

"Now all I am hoping for is

the opportunity to just be there for Nigel, to share memories if he is up to talking and to make him feel loved and appreciated until he draws his last breath."

The couple's good friend Hannah Sinclair has set up a fund raiser for the family to try to support them during this incredibly difficult time.

Yungaburra initiative attracts strong support

BY SALLY TURLEY AN exciting new Yungaburra initiative received overwhelming support from stall holders and customers as far afield as Dimbulah, Mareeba and Cairns on Saturday, May 8, as well as a large contingent of locals.

‘Walk in Wardrobe,’ was a pre-loved clothing and accessory market, which aimed to sustainably transfer new treasures from stall holders’ wardrobes to customers, without adding any more burden to the environment. Monies payed by the stall holders were donated to the local CWA to help fund their projects.

It was an idea born amongst a group of friends – Binny Hendrick, Tamara Vallance, Larissa and Jenni Kruck and Meg Stans-

field, and they have spent the last few months bringing it all together to achieve a great result.

“We have been friends since our kids started prep together, and now they are finishing school, so it seemed a good time to focus on helping our community,” Tamara Vallance said.

“We were aware that every 10 minutes, Australians dump 15 tonnes of clothing and fabric waste into landfill. That adds up to 800,000 tonnes, or 31 kilograms per person, every year.

“We wanted to create a function that gave people an opportunity to restock their wardrobes, make a bit of money and at the same time, re-purpose some of the clothing that might otherwise find its way into our already stressed waste facilities,”

she said.

“Being so close to mother's day, we wanted people to bring their mums and have morning tea or lunch in Yungaburra.”

The success of the day had a lot of people asking if the Walk in Wardrobe would become and annual or even a twice a year event. The organisers had a number of criteria they aimed to satisfy if there was any chance of a repeat performance.

“We wanted a room full of committed stall holders, we wanted to fill the hall with customers and at the end of the event, we wanted to hear that our stall holders were happy with their vendor experience on the day,” Ms Vallance said.

With 25 stall holders happy to pay a small fee to participate

and a flood of customers attending, it seemed the future of the event would now just come down to the stall holders’ experience on the day.

“We modelled it on the Cairns event ‘Your Wardrobe’, and the lady who organised it was very helpful, answering our questions."

"The Yungaburra Association Incorporated auspiced us under their insurance. Without their help, the event could not have happened, so we are very grateful," she said.

Events such as this are a wonderful example of what can be achieved by a small group of like-minded people who want to make a difference and who commit to organising a beneficial community event.

Sophie Cockren of Cairns shopped happily at Atherton vendors, Tarsha Cumming and Jodie Lea's stall. Thrilled with the experience, Tarsha and Jodie said they had "sold so much," were "super busy" and "would definitely do it again."

Melitta Lewis of Yungaburra loved the event so much she said she hoped they would stage a summer and winter version in future.

Colour Frenzy fun comes to Mareeba MAREEBA’S Bicentennial Lakes will have a change of colour this coming Sunday as the first Mareeba Colour Frenzy takes place.

Colour Frenzy first started in 2016 at Toowoomba where it grew and expanded, helping animal rescues around Australia.

It has now grown to 25 different locations with Mareeba now being added to that everexpanding list.

The Lakes will be lined with fun obstacles and colour stations where people will be sprayed every colour of the rainbow, white clothes are recommended.

Organiser of Colour Frenzy Clayton Bielby said that Colour Frenzy is all about helping ani-

mal refuges around Australia.

“A lot of rescues don’t have the time to fundraise on top of everything else they do,” he said.

“So, we (Colour Frenzy) try to do the fundraising for them and let them do what they do best.

“We have a starting area, five colour stations, two obstacle stations and a foam station.”

The idea to bring Colour Frenzy to the Tablelands ensued after Sue Jodner from the Mareeba Animal Refuge witnessed the event in Cairns and thought to bring it up the hill.

“I am thrilled to bring this event to Mareeba, I saw the event in Cairns on the Espla-

nade,” she said.

“I contacted Clayton and they are bringing the whole show to Mareeba.

“Very excited to bring it to Mareeba, it’s family friendly, it’s colourful, we get people out and about.”

The money raised from the event will be split between Colour Frenzy to help them organise more events, while the remainder goes back to the Mareeba Animal Refuge. Food will be available on the day by the Mareeba Men’s Shed.

BY ELLIE FINK LIKE a scene from a Cinderella story, locals from across Far North Queensland have been sending their old formal gowns to Doomadgee to give their young women and men an opportunity to go to the ball.

Empowering Women Empowering Communities put out on their Facebook page about

two weeks ago asking the community to donate dresses for the Doomadgee NAIDOC Ball, which reached more than two million people online.

Yolonde Entsch has been playing fairy godmother for the Doomadgee Community and can not believe the incredible response from across Australia.

“I've been travelling into Doomadgee since February

2017 and I just have so much love and affection for the community,” she said.

“I heard that Elijah Douglas wanted to put on a ball and I thought of a masquerade ball we did for International Women's Day and we had a lot of dresses donated to us.

“I thought of all the dresses we have tucked away in our closet that we don’t wear anymore and thought how people in Doomadgee have it tough and wouldn’t be able to afford a $100 dress if they wanted to attend.”

Mrs Entsch said that during every trip she makes to Doomadgee, she sees the heaviness of the town and wants to bring in some light.

“The community has never had a formal event such as this and we would love everyone to get involved, old or young,” she said.

“This night will always be remembered and it will be talked about for years and we can’t wait to see the magical cheer and delight in the locals eyes.”

The Doomadgee NAIDOC Ball will see Western Queensland's most beautiful princesses and most handsome princes dance the night away on July 8 and any donations can be posted to Yolonde Entsch at PO Box 14, Bungalow, 4870.

Largest Field Days in Northern Australia returns bigger and better than ever

THE Rotary FNQ Field Days will return bigger and better in 2021 with the introduction of brand new sites, exhibitors, displays, attractions and presentations.

Sites for the hugely popular event just about sold out in record time, as exhibitors jumped at the chance to be part in the region’s first large-scale event in about 12 months.

The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 impacted a large number of businesses across Queensland, and saw the introduction of many new health guidelines

being rolled out.

As a result, the Rotary FNQ Field Days organising committee worked around the clock to ensure that 2021 event at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds next week (May 26, 27 and 28) would continue to have its much-loved fun, safe and vibrant atmosphere.

Run by the combined Atherton and Mareeba Rotary Clubs, the award-winning community event continues to raise record amounts each time the event is run.

ON behalf of the Mareeba and Atherton Rotary Clubs I want to extend a warm welcome to all exhibitors and visitors ahead of the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days.

This year’s Field Days will feature brand new sites, exhibitors, displays, attractions and presentations.

In this current COVID world the Rotary FNQ Field Days organising committee has worked tirelessly to ensure next week’s event is hosted in a much-loved fun, safe, fun and vibrant atmosphere.

“We will be the first major event up this way for a while so I think we’re going to get some big numbers and it will be great for exhibitors if we do,” Event chairman Trevor Duncan said.

“Throughout the three days there will be working machine demonstrations, mental health presentations, tractor pulls, bobcat skills shows, interactive workshops and much more.

“We want to make each and every Field Days bigger and better than the last.”

The Rotary Field Days has experienced tremendous growth in recent years with around 6000 patrons, on average, coming through the gates each day.

Mr Duncan said the Field Days has the most comprehensive display of agricultural equipment and products in the region.

A grand parade will be held for the event’s official opening, while a cattle auction will also take place.

“You’re in for an action packed few days; enjoy it, embrace it and again, welcome to Mareeba and the 2021 Rotary Field Days,” Mr Duncan said.

Guest speakers on a mission to save lives A RURAL woman dedicating her work to meeting with rural men on the ground to help break down the stigma of mental health has a powerful message for those across the Far North.

“I promise you there is always a way out of the bog hole and there are plenty of people ready to help you”.

Living in the Darling Downs area, Mary O’Brien’s career in the rural sector has given her a deep respect for country blokes, and more importantly, the ability to effectively communicate and engage with them.

With an aim to bridge the gap between mental health/suicide prevention services and men, she founded ‘Are You Bogged Mate?’ about three years ago, and travels across the country aiming to boost awareness and start a conversation with the broader community about the rising issue of depression and suicide rates among men in rural areas.

Ms O’Brienwill be holding presentations at 12pm each day of the event in the new Rotary Business Tent at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

Ms O’Brien said men and woman attending her presentations could expect “mental health delivered differently”.

“The focus is on rural men, but women find it very valuable as well for their own mental health and managing that, but also understanding men a bit better,” she said.

“The statistics are everywhere, Australian males between 15 and 45 years of age are one of the highest risk categories for suicide.

“Men are three to four times more likely to take their own life than women and the further you move from the coast into regional, rural, and remote Australia, the more that figure climbs.”

Ms O’Brien said while she ‘certainly doesn’t have all the answers’ the sad reality is that “most rural men will not seek help or talk to someone when they are struggling”.

“Don’t choose a permanent solution for a temporary problem,” she said.

“We have already lost too many good men.”

The importance of health and safety on-farm will also be addressed in the in the Rotary Business Tent, with presentations from Atherton cou-

ple Jodie and Mario Cocco.

The pair’s son, Domenic suffered life-threatening injuries after a crashing his quad bike. He was not wearing a helmet and had not had any formal training. Domenic was just sevenyears-old at the time of the incident.

“Just to stop one family from going through (the heartache and pain that we have experienced) is something that we hope to achieve,” Mario said.

“We know of other families that haven’t been so lucky. This is something that we’ll carry for the rest of our lives.”

Jodie and Mario are now Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Safety Advocates and visit businesses and community groups across the state to share their story.

They will be holding presentations at the Rotary FNQ Field Days on Wednesday at 3pm and Thursday at 11am.

Jodie and Mario hope to encourage Queenslanders to take quad bike safety seriously and understand the impacts an injury can have on workers, colleagues, family and friends.

THREE key themes will be in the spotlight at this years Rotary FNQ Field Days all targeting issues such as mental health, community and business.

The first theme of this year’s event – Are You Bogged Mate – focuses on mental wellness in the rural environment and the importance of asking for help has never been greater.

Mental health advocate Mary O’Brien will share about the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, as well as the importance of seeking help.

Travelling all parts of Australia, she talks to groups of rural men about mental health in a new, distinctive, and direct way.

Ms O’Brien has developed the ‘Are you bogged, mate?’ initiative specifically for men who work in the rural sector, with the aim of reducing suicide rates among this group.

Ms O’Brien’s initiative helps men to recognise that support is available, encourages them to reach out, and promotes conversations around mental health – which may not otherwise be openly acknowledged or discussed.

The second theme of this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days is Rural Strong – Open 4 Business, which will showcase the strength and resilience of rural and agricultural industries.

The Far North’s agricultural sector is a major contributor to the region’s strength and success, especially throughout the COVID pandemic.

While many other parts of Queensland and the country suffered great loss due to restrictions, the Far North has remained relatively unaffected – and agriculture has been identified as the reason why.

As part of the Rural Strong – Open 4 Business theme, a range of activities will be held over the three days, such as new technology and equipment display, showcase of new and creative ways farmers have engaged and changed their business, and much more.

There will also be a new Rotary Business tent with a host of presentations.

The third and final theme for the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days is Spirit of Community.

Stories of community spirit in the Far North through the agricultural industry will be shared, along with highlighting just how strong and connected local communities, as far south as the Burdekin are.

Tickets made easy

THERE is now an easier and safter way to attend the Rotary FNQ Field Days next week.

For the very first time, tickets for the event can now be purchased online, a measure taken to ensure the event flows smoothly as people come through the gates.

COVID has also had an impact on the decision to move ticket sales online due to the current rules and regulations surrounding COVID. The Rotary FNQ Field Days is no different and the organising committee have taken this move to offer online ticket bookings for the very first time.

Event chairman Trevor Duncan said the organising committee had worked hard to make the transition as easy as possible for everyone.

He said having visitors pre-purchase online would also help streamline vehicle entry and hopefully reduce the long lines of traffic experienced at past Field Days.

“We’ve got to get the message out there that this year we’ve got to try and get as many people as possible,

to book online if they’re going to come along,” he said.

“I know people are getting adjusted to the fact that you need to check-in online and those sorts of things now when you go anywhere for contract tracing, and that’s one of the new additions to our event.

“That is the big message… and if it works the way we think it will, it’s going to be a lot easier for people to enter on the day they attend."

Mr Duncan said the online booking was made to be simple and easy for anyone to use.

He urged everyone to visit the Rotary FNQ Field Days website, follow the link and purchase a ticket.

“Then just simply print that ticket or save it to your phone and it will

be scanned on your way through the gates on the day, it’s as simple as that,” Mr Duncan said.

“It’s going to make it a lot quicker for people to get through the gates.

They’re not going to be hanging around trying to pay and waiting for change.

“We know we’re going to get some people that don't book online, so we have made allowances for that and will spend a bit more time with them."

Locals can also call into The Express Newspaper office in Mareeba and Tableland Books in Atherton for help with purchasing a ticket online prior to the event.

The businesses will provide assistance if requried and will be able to print out your ticket for the event.

Top quality cattle at Field Days FAR Northern graziers needing new bulls, looking to upgrade their herd's genetics or considering trying out a new cross to reap some rewards from hybrid vigour, should take a look at the cattle on display in Mareeba next week.

Top quality stock from across the North will be presented at the Rotary FNQ Field Days largest ever cattle display over three days and inaugural Stud Cattle sale to be held on the final day of the event, on-site at 10am on May 28, at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

Retired Droughtmaster breeder and sale coordinator, Trevor Taylor said the committee had wanted to stage a cattle sale at the biannual Field Days, for a few years now, but everything came together this year and they decided to "just do it."

About 15 studs have jumped at the chance to sell their cattle at the Field Days, showcasing a variety of breeds for vendor's consideration, including Brahman, Droughtmaster, Ultra Black, Murray Grey and Short Horn stud bulls and heifers.

“The stud stock offered, represent a large area of cattle country, coming from as far south as Nebo and Tully, as far north as the Daintree, as well as all around Atherton, Peeramon and Millaa Millaa giving buyers a good opportunity to compare the advantages offered by each breed in the one location,” Mr Taylor said.

Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan said while there had always been a cattle display at the three-day event, the auction would add a whole new draw-card. The cattle will be displayed for the three days prior to the sale for inspection by purchasers.

Mr Taylor said he had worked hard since the sale was first advertised in January to bring the cattle auction to fruition this year and was hopeful it would be very successful.

There will be only good quality stock there… there will be some really nice females as well as bulls, with possibly some PTIC heifers. They will all be very quiet cattle and if it goes well, we would be keen to make it a regular part of the Field Days," he said.

"We do still have a couple of extra yards available for booking if local stud prinicpals would like to be involved.

The yards are located near the main arena, so please remember to go and have a look at the great cattle on display."

This year's Field Days will feature the largest cattle display in the event's history.

AN exciting line up of new attractions will be on show at the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days and you don’t want to miss them.

The arena at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds will be a hive of activity over the three days with a first-time Bobcat Skills Show every day by Mareeba businessman Rex Petersen (PICTURED), set to be a hit.

He said he was looking forward to showing people some fun tricks with skid-steer loaders, commonly known as Bobcats.

“Back in the early 2000’s I used to do all the stunt stuff at the supercross at Kerribee Park, so that’s where it started because they needed machinery there to work on the track,” Mr Petersen said.

“We used to have a couple working on the track and then I was putting on a little show in the half time break of mainly balance, that’s what most of it is. Balancing a machine on two little tiny wheels. “Let’s hope it’s going to be exciting, I want it to be.”

Mr Petersen said he had been out practising some of the tricks with his vintage skid-steer loader in preparation for the big event.

“The newer machines are too safety conscious so you can’t do these tricks with them, so I’ve had to borrow back one of my old ones and we’re going to give it a coat of paint and make it look all pretty,” he said.

“Then I’ll do some practise of the tricks in my backyard ready for the Field Days.”

The arena will also be home to Working Machinery displays over the three days, where people will have the chance to see a range of machines in action.

The machinery will be based inside the arena for the duration of the Field Days and operators will be at the ready to display the workings of the machines when visitors arrive during the day.

Baron River Catchment Association will also have their Boar Buster Feral Pig Trap set up in the arena with two demonstations a day.

A SPECTACULAR agriculture parade of past, present and future machinery will kick off the Rotary FNQ Field Days like never before.

For the very first time, an official celebration will be held in the Arena at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds at 1pm on Wednesday, May 26.

The celebration will officially open the 2021 event and feature an impressive line-up of machinery, displays, performances, special guests and more.

Tractor Pull revs up The Honeycombes Tractor Pull competition is always a hit at Field Days.

ANOTHER Field Days event means another chance for tractors to flex their muscles in the popular tractor pull event.

The event started four events ago with just a handful of tractors and it has now grown into one of the most watched attractions at the Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Over 40 tractors from across Queensland are expected to take part in this year’s trac-

tor pull, all of which meet the guidelines of being two-wheel drive and at least 40 years old.

The tractor pull involves either a ‘vintage’ or ‘classic tractor’ pulling a sled along a 120m track.

Two sleds will be in action – one to pull 30HP to 100HP tractors, and a second to pull 100HP to 200HP – designed to put on an impressive show for spectators.

A key attraction at the Field Days, the popular competition will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a Friday morning demonstration.

NQ Tractor Pulling Inc president, Mark Brown said he was keen to see what the tractors were capable of this year.

He said nominations opened about five weeks ahead of the event, giving competitors plenty of time to fine tune their machines and brush up on their skills.

“We had the Ayr tractor pull before the Field Days at the end of April and it had good numbers so I’m confident we’ll get about 40 odd tractors coming to Mareeba from all over the region,” he said.

“We had two sleds last year and it worked really well so we’re looking at doing the same again this year.”

Mr Brown said the tractor pulling competition was a great way to connect people from various backgrounds while sharing a common passion of tractors and machinery.

But it’s not just the big kids that will have the chance to battle it out on the track.

The popular competition will again feature a garden tractor class for junior competitors as young as eight to get involved in.

It will include modified ride-on lawn mowers with the deck removed and garden tractors under 15HP and over 15HP, pulling a smaller sled.

The Honeycombes Tractor Pull competition will take place on Wednesday and Thursday at 10am and 2.30pm.

The final will be held on Thursday at 2.30pm and there will be a demonstration on Friday morning at 10am.

THIS year’s Field Days will present some key safety messages with the aim of keeping people safe and alive on our State’s roads.

Far North emergency services will hold three live vehicle rescues demonstrations where they will use equipment to perform rescues in stimulated crash scenarios.

Tablelands Crime Prevention Coordinator Senior Constable Aleda Day said this year’s emergency services display would focus on grey nomads and those travelling with trailers.

“This year our road safety campaign will be around travelling with trailers,” Ms Day said.

“It’s coming into the nomad season too so we’re going to aim it towards education of caravans and educate people on how best to travel safely with caravans on our roads.”

The final day of the Field Days will also coincide with Fatality Free Friday – a nationwide program conducted each year to raise road safety awareness.

Ms Day said having the final day coincide with the Rotary FNQ Field Days “has worked well”.

She said the Department of Transport would also be there on the day to help raise awareness and education.

Health and Wellbeing for all

MENTAL health will not be ignored at the Rotary FNQ Field Days with the Health and Wellbeing Stall yet again making an appearance.

What started as a way to raise awareness about mental health disorders has now grown to include numerous services that support the vulnerable people in our region.

Far North mental health advocate Margie Bestmann has been one of the driving forces behind bringing the Health and Wellbeing Stall to the Field Days.

Passionate about raising awareness, offering support and stamping out the stigma sometimes associated with mental health, she encouraged all those attending this year’s event to stop by the Health and Wellbeing Stall.

“Mental Health disorders continue to increase in the number of people and families that are impacted by this,” she said.

“The journey forward can be very challenging for those involved, and often there is minimal understanding of the illness itself or what can be experienced or done.

“The Health and Wellbeing stall endeavours to assist those who have been impacted by providing access to relevant and current educational material, and local information.

“Mental Health disorders can have a flowon effect across a person’s life, therefore we have made available as many service provid-

Immerse yourself in vintage An impressive line-up of machines from past eras will be put on display as part of this year’s Vintage Tractor and Engine exhibit

A POPULAR feature of past events, the display of vintage tractors, working engines and other machines will complement all the action at the John Deere Tractor and Garden Tractor Pull.

Spectators will have the chance to get up close and personal with the vintage machines as well as learn about their rich history.

Display co-ordinator Ray Blain said more than 40 tractors would be on display, providing the ultimate showcase of old and new.

“There will be about 25-30 pulling tractors, plus another 10 or so display tractors,” Mr Blain said.

“We’ve got heaps of John Deere’s of course, all the different horsepower ranges and a waterloo, which is a rare John Deere.

“We’ve also got a Fiat tractor – it’s such a powerful tractor for its horsepower, it’s amazing. “There will also be some of the little fellas, a few little crawlers.

“The machines will be coming from right across the

Tablelands, Burdekin, Mackay and a few other places so we’re really looking forward to having them up here and on display.”

Mr Blain said several stationary Vintage Engines would also be on display, each of which tell a unique story.

He said they were the type of machines that were “sure to fascinate machinery enthusiasts”.

“I’ll bring my 1920/1921 Bailor that was made in Kansas – there’s only six of them in the world and mine’s the most complete one,” he said.

“There’s only two in Australia that are going. It doesn’t do anything else but drive around in circles and then goes and parks up… it’s too valuable.”

Several Vintage Tractors will feature in the official opening of the Rotary FNQ Field Days in the Arena next Wednesday at 1pm.

The vintage display is located near the tractor pull area.

Volunteers backbone of Field Days

IN simple terms if it weren’t for the contribution of hardworking volunteers Mareeba wouldn’t be able to stage the Rotary FNQ Field Days.

The engine room of the event, the volunteers collaborate, tirelessly before, during and after to deliver a satisfying and memorable event.

A fierce passion for their community is a key motivating factor why so many individuals get involved.

The event is a joint initiative between Atherton and Mareeba Rotary Clubs and

raises thousands of dollars for both clubs to distribute to charities and organisations like Cancer Queensland, QCWA, Lions Clubs and Friends of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

Rotary FNQ Field Days Chairman Trevor Duncan said Field Days couldn’t and wouldn’t be held without the support of the event’s 120 volunteers.

“This event would not work without the support and dedication of our volunteers,” Mr Duncan said.

“They are so important in helping us make the event what it is today and we are so grateful for the ones that return year after year.

“Those who volunteer, money goes back to their charity. The whole idea of the Field Days is to raise money to put back into the community, whether we do it through direct donations to different organisations, or whether we donate back to the volunteers’ who support us.”

Mr Duncan said the event’s organising committee also dedicated countless hours of work behind the scenes to make Field Days

such a success.

“The core of the committee has been there since almost the beginning, so everybody knows what’s got to happen, everybody just gets in and does the job,” he said.

“That’s the great thing about working with people like that.

“They’re so dedicated and passionate about putting on a successful event that has so many great benefits for local businesses, organisations and the region as a whole.”

Chillagoe Festival confirmed for July CHILLAGOE residents have reason to celebrate today with confirmation the town’s hugely popular festival has been revived and will be held later in the year.

The wide-reaching impacts of COVID forced the cancellation of last year’s festival, but with new organisers the Chillagoe alliance committee on board, combined with relaxed social distancing restrictions, the event has been confirmed for July 17.

“The festival is very important for our community and so far we are receiving wonderful feedback and support,” event organiser and spokesperson Lee Gordon told The Express.

“There will be market stalls, poetry, an art exhibition while the local P and C will do a BBQ breakfast.

“At 10am local children

will take part in a street parade where they will decorate their bikes and crack whips. Some locals will also ride their horses, while Frank Oberlander will bring out his Cadillac.

“The music will start from 12pm, with Becci Nethery set to perform.”

Mareeba Councillor Kevin Davies has encouraged the region to support the town’s festival.

“Make sure you head out to Chillagoe for the weekend in July either for the day or make a long weekend of it and explore what Chillagoe has to offer,” Cr Davies said in an online post.

“Explore the caves, mining history, or even have a dip in the beautiful ‘bogey hole’ and then enjoy the wonderful festival and country hospitality.”

SINCE she joined the family firm three years ago, Beth Watson, Brand Ambassador with Mungalli Creek Dairy Pty Ltd, said she has been badgering her parents to use more sustainable packaging on their dairy products.

Horrified by the statistics she has uncovered during her ongoing research into recycling, Beth has appealed to the community to get behind her push for change.

“Our relationship with waste can't end with the yellow-topped bin. Only 11% of what goes in that bin is actually recycled,” she said.

Ms Watson is asking her community to “Be part of the solution and sign the petition” that Mungalli Creek have launched online, to “help create a circular society where resources are designed to be reused, not just used up.”

“A staggering 84% of plastic is buried in land fill, second in quantity only to America.

In fact, the rubbish we send to landfill each year would cover the state of Victoria and what doesn't go to landfill is stockpiled until someone works out what to do with it. We need to pull together and work in clusters if we are going to achieve results,” she said.

“Up until 2018, Australia hasn't really needed recycling facilities as our government was spending 3 billion dollars a year, shipping it to China. Not even China wants it now and our councils are floundering under the mountains of waste they have to deal with each week.”

Ms Watson has considered a number of potential solutions for their own business, but most were problematic.

“Recyclable glass bottles in-

volved large freight, cleaning and energy costs and biodegradable/compostable packaging looked good, but was compacted so tightly into landfill, that the reduced oxygenation dramatically slowed biodegration,” she said.

“We would have loved to have set up milk vending machines in IGA with reusable bottles, but at $60-$80,000 each, they were not a budget option, so we were finally forced to revisit plastic. PET bottles ticked virtually all of our boxes - they were recyclable locally, light, food safe and worked on our existing packaging equipment.

“Best of all, our milk became truly farm to shelf, as those bottles were delivered to us as small tubes that were blown on site. We had to reduce our bottle sizing, but savings made on packaging has enabled us to pay more to our hard working farmers,” Ms Watson said.

We simply do not recycle enough plastic in Australia – of the 3.4 million tonnes of plastics consumed annually, only 320 000 tonnes or 9.4% were recycled, less than in 2005. Australia has been warned it needed to increase its plastic reprocessing by up to 400 per cent to meet national recycling targets.

“Unfortunately, virgin plastic has been tied to the oil price, so a fall in the oil price makes new material cheaper than second hand plastic and price has always been a major factor for businesses. We need a reliable and steady stream of recycled plastic for our packaging, but we are not a big enough player to access it,” Ms Watson said.

Ms Watson believed the Australian Government needed to encourage and reward startups who were keen to develop solutions to recycling and creating useful byproducts from waste.

They are springing up all around the country and offering brilliant solutions.

Heading up a sample of Australia's top 10 new start ups is “Licella” who have developed a unique hydrothermal upgrading platform, the Cat-HTR. It can rapidly and economically transform a wide range of biomass, waste plastic and industry residues into a synthetic oil or biocrude to produce more sustainable fuels and chemicals.

“Nexus eWater” is a home water recycling platform that develops solutions converting grey water for home water and energy use and “Renewlogy” is a global leader in proprietary chemical recycling of low value plastic waste into high value fuels.

“Green Distillation Technologies" is effectively and profitably recycling end of life car and truck tyres (ELTs) into saleable commodities of oil, carbon and steel.

“Manrags” invented a sock recycling and direct-to-consumer textile recycling solution and “BlockTexx” is a clean technology company that recovers polyester and cellulose from textiles and clothing.

Interest in and commitment to the recycling sector is clearly evident on the Australian business landscape and our government needs to increase funding and support to this Brains Trust and reward originality and design excellence. This issue has become too important and too urgent to be left to lie on the table.

Recycled plastic can be remade into bottles and containers, furniture, building materials or even roads, but it has to be cleaned, processed and cleared by quality assurance. It is an expensive process and it becomes hard to see the incentive when virgin plastic is cheaper.

Ben Watson (5) and Lily Watson (11) are an important part of the reason why the Watson family of Mungalli Creek Dairy want to work with their loyal customer base and change the wasteful way in which one-use plastics are using up our beautiful planet.

“We propose that the government incentivise the recycled plastic market, to encourage consumers to choose recycled plastic over virgin material, using a program similar to the successful incentives employed with solar take-up.

“We want to know that just like with glass, the plastic bottle used today can be recycled again and again. Over 130,000 tonnes of plastic waste is already leaking into our oceans and global plastic consumption will double in the next 20 years."

A circular economy would reduce the 300 types of plastic currently available, to the two that were easiest to recycle, PET and HDPE, displacing the rest. It takes less energy and less carbon to use recycled material.

Ironically, landfill creates just three jobs for every 10,000 tonnes of waste dumped, while recycling creates nine. Moving towards a more circular econ-

omy would reduce pressure on the environment and local council, improve the security of the supply of raw plastic materials, stimulate innovation, boost economic growth and create jobs.

In 2019 Queensland implemented a Waste Levy charged to Landfill Operators across 90% of the state's population, for every tonne of waste dumped into landfill. It applied to municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial; construction, demolition and hazardous waste, incrementally increasing annually.

“Its aim was to make dumping waste in landfill more expensive than recycling, because, like anything, the waste management sector is profit driven and 70% of revenue generated would go to councils in the form of an advance payment.. This levy could also provide a source of funding for the facilitation of better resource recovery practices,” Ms Watson said.

“At Mungalli we are invested in creating a healthy future for the next generation. It’s why we’ve farmed Biodynamically for over 30 years. But the future is about so much more than just our farm.

“In our lifetime there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. What future are we leaving our children and grandchildren?

LOBBY TMR FOR ROAD UPGRADES TMR has done some great work widening sections of the highways into Mareeba.

Some of it may seem unnecessary.

The PDR, which is the road to Cape York, has been overlooked.

The section of this road from Granite Creek to the intersection for access to the industrial estate/ cattle sale yards has been overlooked.

It is the busiest road with hundreds of trucks a day in and out of the industrial park and almost no shoulder and no widened centre like the other recently upgraded roads.

Many cyclists and pedestrians use this section and it is extremely dangerous in its present state.

Come on MSC please lobby TMR to have this section upgraded as a priority.

I might add there are also sections of the PDR that need attention further out but none as bad or as big a safety issue as this section.

Please copy and paste if you agree and put pressure on MSC to get this done sooner rather than later.

WHEN A WAR STARTS THE FIRST CASUALTY IS THE TRUTH IT seems to me that the Australian public only see what they want to see, and only hear what they want to hear.

In a report published in the Cairns Post on Wednesday 30th September 2020, the President of the “Australian Institute of Marine Science” at a senate inquiry and under oath, declared that there was no evidence that the reef was dying.

Previous to this I believed the reef was doomed. Was I the only who read this report?

Common sense tells me that where you have life you also have death, and the Reef is so large that some parts must be expanding, and other part must be declining.

With all the trouble we have in Australia at the present time, I encourage people to use their common sense and I am going to quote, possibly one of the greatest Presidents America ever had, Abraham Lincoln.

He said “You cannot bring about prosperity by discontinuing thrift, You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong, You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer, You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred, You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich, You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money, You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn, You cannot build character

A CHALLENGE FOR THE BELIEVERS WE have vast reserves of natural forms of a particularly energetic molecular family; the hydrocarbons – coal, oil and gas.

We also have ideological enemies, at home and abroad, who have convinced large sections of our community that the combustion of our naturally-formed hydrocarbon molecules to create energy or materials results in an extremely energetic reaction in the atmosphere from an emitted by-product -carbon dioxide (yes, plant food).

They’ve convinced some of us that carbon dioxide somehow stores heat it collects from infrared photons from longwave outgoing radiation and that it will continue to radiate heat (as infrared photons) without losing any accumulated energy.

They’ve convinced some of us that an impossible reaction (see “conservation of energy”) is causing catastrophic overheating of the entire atmosphere and most of the oceans (consider the mass imbalance) and that we should therefore transition to unreliable energy sources (wind, solar, batteries) or experimental energy sources (hydrogen).

All the factors in this supposed carbon dioxide reaction are quantifiable. It would take a staggeringly enormous input of additional energy,

far beyond carbon dioxide’s capacity to absorb and then re-emit infrared photons, to achieve the disastrous results described in the most settled of sciences.

Meanwhile, our foes are increasing their use of our efficient natural hydrocarbon molecules, either as power station fuel or as steel-making consumables in China or as private jet fuel on the way to the latest climate summit, with no apparent concern for the disastrous fate they themselves predict.

At some point the mainstream population are going to realise that a lifetime of alarming predictions that have not eventuated and a continuing pattern of alarmism intended to manipulate our emotions is supporting a cleverly disguised attack on our prosperity and our ability to manufacture the military goods required to defend ourselves.

“Climate change/global warming” and “clean, reliable renewables” are an interconnected enemy attack on our economy designed to weaken us and it has been very effective at lowering our national intelligence quotient.

Here’s a challenge for all the “believers” 50 years of age or older. Go to an estuary you visited as a child that has features that haven’t changed much.

Make the visit on a high or low tide, depending on your recollections of it. List the things that have disappeared not from erosion or subsidence but from rising seas.

My favourite is Fort Denison. Remember – no sealevel rise means no ‘dangerous global warming”.

With Mareeba Mens S hed IN the last month, in addition to our regular activities on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, we have assisted the Animal Shelter fund raiser in an effort to assist a very worthy cause and we held another of our monthly talks for the benefit of members - last month time we learned about Aged Care Services.

Tomorrow we will learn about the activities of Crime Stoppers from Crime Stoppers Far Northern Volunteer Area Committee Chairperson Mladen Bosnic.

Crime Stoppers is all about keeping our communities and families safe. It is a community program that allows people to provide anonymous information about criminal activity and supports the Queensland Police Service and other community agencies, in solving and preventing crime.

So you're welcome to join us at the Mareeba Mens Shed facilities at the river end of Lloyd Street look for the signs - they're easy to follow - at 10am tomorrow.

It's a case of all hands on deck this month as we ready for a busy time. As well as other regular activities, Mareeba Mens Shed will combine with Community Health to provide men’s health checks throughout the FNQ Rotary Field Days at our shared site at Kerribee Park Rodeo Grounds next week on May 26 to 28.

Men's Health and access to information are important and these are varied including all the typical Men’s health problems, overweight, diabetes, prostate and other health associated problems.

This activity enables health checks for men who might not ordinarily be proactive in their health care and it's free and quite worthwhile.

So fellows, call in and get a check up and you can also learn about the Mareeba Mens Shed activities as well.

Mens Shed members will be on hand to inform about this organisation's many benefits and there also will be a display of the various activities we are involved in.

Generally most members are retired have time on their hands and are struggling to use that time effectively.

However we do have younger men who are not working full time for various reasons.

Any of our members are able to do their own individual projects which are as varied as the skills of the members and also be involved in community projects that The Shed undertakes if they wish.

Our local group is involved in income producing activities such as pie and drink stall at the Mareeba Rodeo, multicultural festival and the music festival in October “Savannah in the Round” to name just a few.

New members are always welcome, so anyone wishing to join Mareeba Mens Shed group should come along on any of our days of operations and call into the Shed at the river end of Lloyd Street or you can phone us on 0499 229 986 - and remember everyone is welcome. ► 12 Weetbix crushed ► 1/4 cup cocoa powder sifted ► 3/4 cup brown sugar ► 200g butter melted ► 1/2 cup desiccated coconut ► 1 egg lightly beaten ► 200g milk chocolate melted ► 200g chocolate freckles

Method

1. Preheat oven to 160C degrees.

2. Grease an 18cm x 28cm slice pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, allowing a 3cm overhang on all sides.

3. Combine finely crushed Weet-Bix, cocoa powder, sugar, butter, coconut and egg in a bowl.

4. Press mixture over base of prepared pan.

5. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until firm to touch. Allow to cool.

6. Melt chocolate on medium heat in the microwave for 3 minutes (stirring every 30 seconds with a metal spoon) and pour over the top of the slice. Working quickly, place the Freckles in neat lines.

7. Pop in the fridge for 2 hours. Take out of the fridge and cut into squares.

Kara only has a short history of cross fit behind her only taking it up in last years lockdown before entering several competitions in 2021.

Tinaroo hosts annual regatta LAKE Tinaroo turned on fantastic weather and wind for the Atherton Gas and Camping May Day Regatta held recently.

Wind ranged from 10 to 15 knots all weekend, so the racing was fast and tight with over 65 boats and 100 sailors out on the water.

Sailors and their families even came from as far as Sydney to compete in the event.

Families were able to use Tinaroo Sailing Club’s venue to camp on for the weekend and

watch all the sailing action from the land.

Tinaroo Sailing Club has a unique formula of having an early morning frostbite and late afternoon twilight race where all the kids get to try out the adult’s super-fast catamarans which results in smiles all round.

This event is a highlight on many sailing calendars as it combines great racing with a social atmosphere for a family friendly event.

International triathlon touches down in Douglas

Atherton player Chris Adams will be going toe to toe with some of Australia’s former legends this coming Friday, many whom he grew up watching.

ATHERTON’S Chris Adam has taken a big step from watching Australia’s bowlers on TV to now being on the receiving end with the upcoming Bulls Masters game in Atherton this Friday.

Having grown up watching

many of the players he will now face Chris is filled with a sense of excitement and just a bit of foreboding.

Ryan Harris is just one of the star players in the Bulls lineup and a player that Chris watched

growing up.

“It will definitely be a good experience playing against Queensland and Australia legends,” Chris said.

“Hopefully he (Ryan) doesn’t nick us all off straight away.

“It will be a good experience playing and learning from them, they will have a lot to say.”

The match kicks off this Friday at 2.30pm at Loder Park in Atherton, preceded by an exhibition game at 10.30am.

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand’s top triathletes will descend onto the tourist town of Port Douglas next month for the commencement of two Oceania Championships.

The 2021 Oceania Standard Distance Championship will be held on Saturday 12 June, followed by the 2021 Oceania Sprint Cup on Saturday 26 June.

These events will be the first Trans-Tasman triathlon events o Australian soil since COVID touched down over a year ago.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the events would showcase Port Douglas as a destination for major events and sports tourism, and with Tokyo just around the corner, there is no time like the present.

“Hosting the Australian and

New Zealand national triathlon teams is a unique and incredible honour for Douglas Shire,” he said.

“Our tropical climate offers a realistic simulation of the conditions for the competition in Tokyo.

“Add the beauty of Port Douglas, and the wonderful spirit of our community, and we have a very appealing environment for world class athletes to compete.”

There will be changed traffic condition over the two weekends as the green and gold will take on the kiwis.

More than 30 kids attended a new six week cricket program in Dimbulah that was launched last Wednesday.

A PASSIONATE Dimbulah teacher has gotten support from Cricket Queensland in an attempt to revive and install a cricket program in the town.

Emme Wild recently moved to Dimbulah from Western Australia and was struck by the lack of sporting facilities and opportunities in her new community.

With the drive to make a change she contacted Trisha Spry from Queensland Cricket who suggested bringing a sixweek Cricket Blast program to the local schools in the area.

“This is to provide an opportunity and an introduction into cricket for those students,” Ms Wild said.

“Another one of the rea-

sons we set this program up is to provide the opportunity for those who are local and unable to get into Mareeba.

“Ultimately we would love to put a cricket team together or bring cricket to Dimbulah and provide another sporting avenue for the town.”

32 Enrolled kids spent last Wednesday afternoon after

school doing drills and building their cricketing skills with hopes for a potential junior team to sprout.

The team would fall under the Mareeba District Cricket Club but contain players from Mutchilba, Dimbulah and other surrounding communities.

Yarrabah swoops in for win IN a tough Sunday road trip already down players, the Mareeba Gladiators suffered another defeat and lost more players to injury.

Coming off the back of two highly competitive games against Brothers and Innisfail the Gators looked out of form taking the field against Yarrabah on their turf.

The Gators lost both of their centres to injuries within the first

10 minutes of the match, significantly decreasing both their offensive and defensive strength.

“The boys didn’t turn up yesterday we started really slow, we sort of weren’t there,” captain coach Trent Barnard said.

Suburbs take win at Mungalli Stadium AN improved second half wasn’t enough to save the points for the Atherton Roosters in their Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership match with Suburbs at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

In the end it was Suburbs coming away 20-12 winners over the Roosters who were again with out several of their regulars.

The Roosters dug deep and at one stage looked to be head-

ing for an upset win after dominating most of the second half.

Unforced errors from the Roosters allowed Suburbs to pressure the Roosters line for most of the first half and set up a 14-2 lead at the break.

Tries to Gideon Larry and Glenn Dumbrell gave the Roosters a perfect restart and closed the gap to 14-12.

The Roosters were now back in the hunt and playing with alot of energy much to the delight of the local crowd.

But they were unable to maintain the pressure which allowed Suburbs to cross for their match sealing try five minutes from the final siren.

Results of lower grade games played – Ladies Innisfail vs Roosters 44-4, Reserve grade Suburbs vs Roosters 36-20, Under 18 Suburbs vs Roosters 22-10.

This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host Cairns Brothers in four grades from 2.30pm.
