School’s century of celebrations Henry Tranter is a past student at Millaa Millaa State School and will turn 100 years old this year, along with the school. Pictured here with Principal Barry Jones.

FROM ink to ipads and from blackboards to interactive whiteboards, Millaa Milaa State School is gearing up to celebrate a very rich 100 years of history at its centenary in September 2018. Among the attendees of the event will be former student Henry Tranter, also turning 100 this year. The Millaa Millaa local is one of the school’s earliest students and will join hundreds of others as they gather on September 29 and 30 to celebrate the school. Organisers want to invite any past students, staff and families to attend. “This school means so much to people that some classes are already planning their own get-togethers over that weekend,” said Bridget Daley. “We’re hoping people will get in contact with their old school friends and make it happen for their class as well.” There will be a full day of activities at the school on September 29, followed by a School Centenary Dinner at the RSL Hall at night and

Breakfast back at the school on Sunday morning September 30. A much anticipated School Centenary Book will be available for sale. “You'll be surprised at how many people have attended the Millaa Millaa State School or previous Millaa Millaa Schools,” said Ms Daley. “There's sure to be some great yarns and fond memories to be shared of former school days. “A lot of things have changed in the last 100 years at the Millaa Millaa State School but one thing that hasn’t is the way that former students feel about the school. “The school has always been a winner with students, teachers, parents and staff. “Former students have succeeded in all areas of life with some having participated in and having won at State, Australian and World class events.” For more info including dinner bookings contact Millaa Millaa State School on 0740 972 167.

StrokeSafe talk comes to Mareeba IN Australia, a stoke occurs every nine minutes. That’s more than 56,000 stokes every year affecting people of all ages. But did you know stoke can be prevented? The Stoke Foundation and StrokeSafe Ambassador speaker, John Vickary, will be doing a special presentation in Mareeba on Wednesday May 23 and everyone encouraged to come along

in the aim of creating awareness. The presentation will focus on what is a stoke and how to recognise it, what to do if someone is having a stoke, plus what people can do to prevent a stoke. The talk will run for approximately 40 minutes including time for questions and kicks off at 6.30pm, at the Mareeba Leagues Club.

Searching for Herberton’s history DO you have a connection with any of Herberton’s buildings? Did you greatuncle’s wife’s cousin once own a pub there? Is your family’s name on the Herberton cenotaph? Did your great grandfather spend time in the lockup? These are just some of the questions that Herberton Mining Museum volunteers are asking in search of Tablelanders’ voices for their new app. “The volunteers are developing an app based on their Heritage Walk brochure and want to record locals’ voices, said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“As people walk around the streets of Herberton, the app will display photos and tell stories about each of the buildings. If you have a connection with any of Herberton’s buildings, particularly those in the Grace, Ellie, William and Lillian Streets area, please get in touch with the volunteers. The recording will be less than a minute, and you’ll be reading from a prepared script. You can email the museum’s volunteers at info@herbertonvisitorcentre.com.au

NDRRA Disaster Assistance for Tablelands DISASTER assistance has been extended to the Tablelands local government area that was impacted by rainfall and ooding in early March. Funding is being made available through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for Commonwealth disaster assistance said ooding caused widespread damage across the Tablelands. “This assistance will enable the rebuilding and replacement of damaged public infrastructure, including roads, as well as help council with their clean-up costs.â€? Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said that joint government ďŹ nancial support has been

activated to ensure the community received assistance. “This was a signiďŹ cant ood event, which had a major impact on numerous communities in north Queensland,â€? Mr Crawford said. “The funding demonstrates the Commonwealth and Queensland governments' commitment to providing relief and recovery assistance following natural disasters.â€? “We are continuing to monitor the ooding situation and will extend assistance further as required.â€? Information on disaster assistance can be found on the Australian Government’s Disaster Assist website at disasterassist.gov.au and the Queensland Government’s Disaster management website at disaster. qld.gov.au.

St Stephen’s Catholic College principal Ida Pinese with David Bin, the 2018 Lions Youth of the Year District winner.

Outstanding speech earns state final spot St Stephen’s Catholic College student David Bin has made it into the state ďŹ nals of the Lions Youth of the Year competition, staving off stiff competition from other students across the Far North. The 17-year-old was announced as the winner of the district leg of the com-

petition in Townsville on March 24. The college captain from Mutchilba said the event was an eye-opener. “It was a very positive experience, he said. “I am very grateful for the support of the Lions club of Mareeba and St Stephens. “I was not expecting to

get this far and feel like I’m gaining more conďŹ dence as I progresses in the competition.â€? David will head to Rockhampton on April 14 for the next stage of the judging at the state ďŹ nal. The Lions Youth of the Year programme seeks a broad range of skills in the

areas of leadership, sport, community and cultural activities. Contestants present a prepared speech and respond to two impromptu questions. His parents Lynn-Tonya and Raimond Bin said they were very proud of David and gave him lots of support.

Byrnes honoured to be Councillor BORN and bred local businessman Owen Byrnes was last week ofďŹ cially declared as the new councillor for Tablelands Regional Council. The son of late exAtherton councillor Keith Byrnes whose cousin Ray Byrnes was also the mayor of Eacham Shire, 53-yearold Mr Byrnes said he was “honouredâ€? that the voters in Division 6 have elected him to be their representative. “Well ďŹ nally the ECQ have announced the councillor for Division 6,â€? he said. “I am honoured the vot-

ers have elected me to be their representative and I look forward to being sworn in on April 5 after the council returns from the Easter break then I can get to work representing my division. Married with three grown-up children and two grand-children, Mr Byrnes said he is ready to step back from his earthmoving business and into the council chambers. “There are many requests and questions that my constituents feel need to be addressed and I will be presenting these to council as soon as possible, he

said. “I am hearing the complaints in relation to the lack of commitment and attention to roads and drains. “I am fully aware of the struggle getting to and from businesses, farms and properties. The current weather condition has added to the already appalling state of our secondary roads and I believe this could have been severely reduced had more attention been given to the road maintenance program. People pay their rates in expectation that these basic services are maintained. Mr Byrnes said he is

hoping to turn the council’s attention back to the basics. “It is of my opinion council needs to get back to the grass roots on improving and maintaining the basics some of which include rates, roads, rubbish and serving the public, he said. “Poor attention to these essential basic items will eventually leave a legacy of such poor infrastructure for future councils and this would be sad for the next generation. Mr Byrnes will replace ex-councillor Bronwyn Voyce who resigned from her position back in January.

Council workers go on stike again By Rebecca Wallis

MAREEBA Shire Council workers took industrial strike action for the second time in as many months last week after a breakdown in negotiations over pay and employment security. Around 20 workers stood with union officials outside of the council offices on Walsh Street on Wednesday morning demanding that CEO Peter Franks meet with them to discuss their concerns. 60 worked in total were alledgedly on strike. But Mr Franks said he had been negotiating in "good faith" with union organisers for months and that he would happily sit down and talk if the discussion was fair and reasonable. Last month he offered a 2.5 per cent increase in wages which union officials declined.

"One big increase that we've offered is what we can afford and what the community can afford," said Mr Franks. "We offered two and a quarter per cent across the board increase. "A lot of the staff also have annual increments. That takes it above the 2.5 per cent increase and that's what we've increased the rates by, 2.5 per cent. "Our wage bill is more than what we get in rates and that's really our only source of revenue other than grants. So if we were to give 3 per cent increase or whatever, then we'd have to charge that to the rate payers. The rate payers jiust cant afford it." Mr Franks stepped out of the council offices to listen to the strikers' concerns and councillors including Lenore Wyatt, Nipper Brown, Mary Graham, Kevin Davies and Angela Toppin attended the protest.

Cr Brown said he felt it was important that he was there. "I actually believe our staff is one of our biggest assets, so for me I felt that I had to go to listen to their concerns, to see what they wanted and to get their perspective and listen to them and then see what they wanted or expected from us," he said. "While we're not involved with operational issues, it is a small community and we know everybody and they're the people that have elected us, they are rate payers, so we needed to go and have a listen." Cr Brown said he empathised with their plight but was not in a postion to comment on the issue with pay. "The job security, that's a major issue right across the country, not just here," he said. "Everyone's concerned about job security and I really do empathise with

them because if you don't feel secure within your job, it makes it hard." Jim White, the North Queensland organiser of the Plumbers Union, said that they were not making excessive demands. "We want to sit down at the table and negotiate a fair wage increase and some employment security for Mareeba Shire Council workers," he said. "We’re not trying to go for Hollywood wages or inflated increases that would be a detriment to the council, that’s not good for anyone. "We do our homework, we understand the financial position of where the council is and we go and ask for a fair and reasonable pay increase." Mr White said Mareeba Shire Council workers were being paid less than many other workers doing the same sort of work in similar sized councils around the

State. A claim that Mr Franks both agreed and disagreed with. "The reality is our conditions are good," he said. "Are they as good as other councils? No they are not, we can't afford them. Are they better than a lot of other councils? Yes they are. "There's also this fear about job security, well we have no intention of getting rid of anymore staff. We're down to about as low a staff members as we can have and in fact I'd like to be able to put more staff on but we just can't afford to because the community has to pay them. But are we looking at redundancies and things? Absolutely not." The union reps said they would not be backing down and if the stale-mate continued they would take the situation to the Queensland Industrialisation Commission.

THANKFUL: Jaime Payne, Shannon Richardson, Brenton Richardson and his children Brax and Amirah Richardson. By Rebecca Wallis

RACHEL Richardson’s family say they would have been lost without the outpouring of local support they received after flooding tore through her home last week. The grandmother was home alone with two of her grandchildren when over

100mm of rain fell within a few hours on the evening of March 26. “She looked up and said the water was over the road and within five minutes it was lapping the top of her step,” said Jaime Payne, Rachel’s son’s partner. “It was through the room and through the shed.” Ms Richardson has been living on the lowest part of

Rankin Street for over 20 years and has never seen the water rise so high. Debris from Basalt Gully was washed over the road wrecking fences in its path. Her home was one of many in Mareeba that was flooded by the rain. “We were worried about her and the kids, but we couldn’t get to her so called everyone we could think of

that was nearby to help,” said Ms Payne. “By the time we got here there were loads of complete strangers helping her out and lifting stuff off the ground to try and save it. “We couldn’t believe how many people stopped to help.” Although the water receded quickly, it took another day to clear the debris.

“So many people have come to help clear up,” said Ms Payne. “We even had the local kindy come and bring us some smoko, which is amazing. “We just want to say a big thank you to everyone who pitched in. It is true what they say – small town, big heart. That is Mareeba all over.

MORE than 100mm of rain fell within a few hours in Mareeba alone on March 26, flooding roads throughout the town. Council workers, the SES and local firies worked through the evening to keep residents safe as the rivers flooded roads to unprecedented levels. Mayor Tom Gilmore said council staff were now working hard to repair the damage.

“Council is in the process of not only assessing the damage to road infrastructure but commenced emergency repairs, which includes potholes, erosion, bridge and pavement damage and debris clearing,” he said. “With many roads only now becoming accessible, it will take a while before we learn the full extent of the damage. However, we expect it to be significant.”

Cr Gilmore said that where possible, Council will carry out emergent works to repair immediate damage to the road network to provide accessibility for affected residents and businesses. “While flood waters may have receded, the condition and strength of the road infrastructure is unknown and has the potential to be extremely dangerous,” Cr Gilmore said.

“This is why our staff are moving swiftly to assess, repair and re-open roads as soon as possible. “Once again this demonstrates the commitment of Mareeba Shire staff to ensure community safety and the amenity of our Shire,” Cr Gilmore concluded. Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions and do not, under any circum-

stance drive through flood waters. Atherton received 123mm of rain but much of the southern Tablelands missed out the significant rain event. Kuranda, however, copped a whopping 400mm of rain in just one day, backed up with over 100mm the day after turning the Barron Falls into a raging torrent.

Million dollar damage bill By Rebecca Wallis

TINAROO Dam is at 87 per cent at the time of going to press and rising and with the wet season still in full swing experts say it could reach maximum capacity for the first time in nearly 10 years. Although the record rain fall made the Easter break a memorable one for campers and water enthusiasts who annually flock to the dam for recreational pursuits,

it also caused carnage for farmers. Estimates of over a million dollars worth of damage have been done in the Emerald Creek area of Mareeba as multiple growers lost water pumps and crops. “It’s the good, the bad and the ugly,” said Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro. “It’s good for the community and tourism and great for the skiers at Tinaroo, but the rain fall has

caused a lot of problems for growers in this area.” Mr Moro said that irrigators were happy that Tinaroo had passed the 75 per cent capacity mark, meaning they could confidently expect to get two seasons worth of irrigation out of it. But he said the damage bill would be extensive for the Emerald Creek area and could mean that the region would qualify for disaster relief. “It doesn’t take much to clock up a few dollars of

damage and I know of many people in that area who have lost their pumps and other equipment,” he said. “We were shocked with the water levels and many of the people I spoke to said the river levels were the highest they’d seen in their lives. The problem was that it rose so quickly.” Mr Moro said it wasn’t just growers who suffered from the flash flooding, but that many rural residential properties received significant damage to equipment

also. He said the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries had been in touch with industry players in the region and were assessing the situation. “They are aware of it and they will do an assessment in the coming weeks,” he said. “There will be a report that will go to the Minister and there are categories we might fall under but we might not. We’ll have to wait and see.”

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE: Dragonfruit farmer Robert Iacutone estimates the damage bill at close to $20,000 after record flood levels decimated his crop last Monday night. Mr Iacutone’s property sits on Emerald Creek and says he and his neighbours have never seen the river level rise so high.

Hospital group ramp up campaign

SAVE the Mareeba Hospital Services group are renewing their efforts to push for answers to their petition, threatening to hold a public rally if action is not taken in the next few months. Denis McKinley, Ross Cardillo, Diana Pregle, Betty Dickinson and Mareeba Shire councillors Nipper Brown and Mary Graham are meeting with Cynthia Lui later this month to ask her to take their campaign to Health Minister Steven Miles. Mr McKinley said the petition which garnered

group is waiting for answers to six key points from the petition which include reinstating operating theatres at Mareeba Hospital to a minimum of three to four days a week and bringing into operation a laparoscopic unit which he claims has sat idle at the hospital for over three years. In a letter dated March 19, Mr Miles responded to the group’s petition claiming he would write to federal MP Greg Hunt to seek to reinstate the hospital’s funding under the COAG initiative. He also said the State Government was increasing services at the hospital

by committing $1.5million this year for staff accommodation and $1.5million for a CT scanner as promised by Cynthia Lui in her election campaign. Mr McKinley said Mr Miles’ letter was nothing more than a “blanket statement. They’re playing politics,” he said. “It’s a long fight but we need to be there in force and put the message to Cynthia and say this is unacceptable, you need to go back to the Minister as the local member and put the pressure on him that he must answer these questions. “Otherwise our next move is to the Health Ombudsmen and if that fails

then our move is a well planned meeting at Davis Park, a rally. And then they can come and talk to the public about why they weren’t answering.” It has been almost a year since the Save Mareeba Hospital Services group came together. He said he is still concerned about the future of the hospital. “I still think there are people in there who have an agenda and that agenda isn’t good for Mareeba Hospital. It’s good for Atherton, but it’s not good for here,” he said. “We need to focus back on to the core points that were in the petition.”

5000 signatures last year proves there is a community need for more services in Mareeba including chemo, dialysis, a fully functioning operating theatre, CT scanner, sterilisation unit and palliative care. “Until we get these answered truthfully and professionally and in the best interest of the hospital, we’re going to continue down our road and that’ll be a meeting to front the Minister and put the pressure on,” he said. “We’ll plan it two months out and tell people to come there with placards to make them answer to the public again.” Mr McKinley said the

THIS week marks the start of a new season at Mareeba Wetlands and is also the beginning of a new era for the Wildlife Conservancy of Tropical Queensland. Mareeba business owner Fiachra Kearney is taking over the presidency of the group which was established in 1996 to create and manage the Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve for conservation, recreation and education. After a stint working there in the 1990s, Mr Kearney is back living in Mareeba and keen to realise the potential of one of the region’s biggest assets. “I believe there is a lot of potential, he said. “The next year or two I want to explore various ideas and see how the Reserve can

contribute even more to this community. The Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve lies 10km north-west of Mareeba and protects 2,000ha of Eucalypt woodland, wetlands and lagoons. The lagoons provide a permanent wetland habitat for resident and seasonal migratory bird species, and the woodland and grasslands support one of the region’s highest densities of small mammals. Particularly interesting species include rare and threatened animals such as northern quolls, black-throated finches, buff-breasted button-quail, cotton pygmy-geese and black-necked storks. The conservancy’s founders Tim and Gwyneth Nevard are retiring from the coalface and current president, Annabelle Ols-

son also stepping back to spend more time with her veterinary practice. “The conservancy is formally recognising Tim and Gwyneth’s exceptional service to wildlife conservation and the community, through their new role as founders, said Mr Kearney. “They won’t get away that easily though, as they will be assisting the conservancy with an exciting new initiative currently being developed by the board. We shall also be working closely with Annabelle on a ground-breaking concept in wildlife health, rehabilitation and research. The reserve was established over 20 years ago and is managed by the conservancy under a joint trusteeship with the Mareeba Shire Council. Boasting a world class visitor experi-

ence, Jabiru Safari Lodge re-opened this week after its wet season closure and the Visitor Centre will reopen for casual day visitors on April 7, a delayed opening due to recent heavy rains. Mr Kearney said that the Board are keen to get local businesses more involved with the wetlands and they are planning some entertainment events for this year. “We want to look at what’s already there and look at ways to utilise it more, he said. “We want to conserve it and make it relevant for a lot of people. The thing about Mareeba is that most people really do appreciate north Queensland, and we want to help to maintain that.

‘It’s all for charity, so why not?’ FOLLOWING in his brother's footsteps, 16-year-old Jake Priestly (pictured) is entering the 15th annual Great Wheelbarrow Race as a solo competitor. In 2015, Jake's brother Josh won the male solo category, and it was his determination which made younger brother Jake take on the challenge. "Watching Josh do the race solo three years ago has motivated me to do the same thing and give it a go – It's all for charity, so why not," Jake said. The St Stephen's Catholic College student will

compete in this year's event to raise money for Rosie's, a local charity which reaches out to those less fortunate in the community. “I volunteer for Rosie's with my mum and dad every month and it's a really great charity that gives back to the local community." “Rosie's reaches out to those most in need, those people who are lonely, abandoned, and marginalised within our communities, Jake said. Race chair, Councillor Nipper Brown is encourag-

ing teams to jump online and nominate. “Nominations close on 7 May but don't leave it until the last minute to put your team in, Cr Brown said.

Jake has set up a webpage to help raise money for his chosen charity. Visit: http://rosies.strikingly. com/ if you would like to donate or find out more.

EXPRESS yourself

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Message from Kairi CONGRATULATIONS Owen Byrnes, our Division 6 New Councillor. Congratulations to your lovely family and how proud are you Joan? I represent a large area of Kairi District Ratepayers, along with Tolga, Atherton, Malanda, and further South. My representation is nothing formal. I put myself out there to represent those who are

Rate-gate In addition to the now departed Finance Manager knowing of the MGR error, it would appear that the CEO, Ms Babacan, was also aware of same. As a result Ms Babacan has now tendered her resignation. So who else knew about the rates bungle and did nothing last September? Is it possible the Mayor knew and hid this from his fellow Councillors? The time has come for the Mayor to publicly declare when he first became

afraid to do so themselves. I am part of the signage to be noticed by TRC and other ratepayers. My aim is to spread the truth by signage that tells only the truth. The majority of TRC Ratepayers, are those, who are far from happy with the dire situation of TRC. We will continue to seek attention to our issues, by our presence, and signs, until we are heard and listened to respectfully and spoken to with simple, honest and verbal, answers.

A dim reminder – last Wednesday, 28/03/2018, ratepayers with 15% cap-

ping on rates will pay again to prop up the TRC Budget.

Our media declared on the front page of the local newspaper last year after

aware of the rates errors. If the Mayor had no knowledge of the error before February then he should feel betrayed and angry that “his” Council has been brought into further question. Or, if Mayor Paronella was aware of the error, then he has conspired with management to keep this information from the Council and the public. In any case there has been a cover up by senior management in which the Mayor was either included or excluded. In my opinion Mr Par-

onella has two options left: 1. If the alleged cover up did not involve him he should immediately dismiss all senior management involved (including the CEO). Or, 2. If Mayor Paronella was aware of the error back in September/October last year then he should also resign. Either way the Mayor of TRC should show some real leadership by taking the appropriate action. Regardless, Mayor Paronella’s position becomes untenable due to his continued denial of any al-

leged misconduct – whether he was complicit or not. The fact that Mayor Paronella has not made Ms Babacan's resignation effective immediately is further evidence of complicity in the alleged cover up. To add insult to injury, ratepayers have had to endure the adulation over the CEO’s “legacy”. This shows just how oblivious the Mayor is to public sentiment. And still we don’t hear a word from any of the Councillors. Where do they stand on all of this? They should be furious at

being kept in the dark by their senior management and possibly their Mayor. In the interest of transparency, accountability and above all, integrity, all Councillors should declare their position on the matter. Otherwise we can only interpret their silence as condoning their Managers’ misconduct and as continued support for the Mayor's lack of leadership. Ed Kochi ATHERTON

Legacy or liability? I feel compelled to point out that not everyone shares David Anthony and the Mayor’s glowing analysis of the outgoing CEO’s achievements.

the October 2017 rate adjustment, that farmers were Happy with 15% capping on the Rates. Are any farmers and graziers out there happy with 15% capping on their rates? I would say no, definitely no. Please back me up you guys – 4% to 5% capping may be acceptable. The next budget preparation is in progress. Do we hold our breath and wonder who will bear the blunt of the next rate saga. Maybe some of our readers of today, be prepared.

Let’s stay united in getting the message to our representatives in Local Government, our Mayor, our CEO and Councillors. TRC, please consider all ratepayers in the progress and wellbeing of our shire. We do not need discrimination, of any nature. Please put the next generation first, in big plans for our shire - save our goal. As children have put on their signage – please save our future. Louise Pensini KAIRI

In my opinion, the only legacy from this CEO is a distraught ratepayer base and a totally defunct rates model. Everything else is white noise. Ms Babacan has resigned 16 months into her job – 6 months of which has been under a cloud of controversy concerning rates. But we are told she “leaves TRC on a high with a strong record of achievement”. Our CEO’s very first budget oversaw the most disastrous rates model ever in our Council’s history. The current rates debacle happened on her watch and has brought Paronella and his Council into serious disrepute. Yet the Mayor is keeping Ms Babacan on for another two

months. When this CEO was first appointed our Mayor told us, “Ms Babacan has an open and collaborative style with an emphasis on collective responsibility.” In my experience nothing could be further from the truth. I seriously question the Mayor’s decision to keep this CEO on until June. During this time the rates review will occur, the next budget will be prepared and a new CEO chosen – all of which should be free of this CEO’s fingerprints. Just another example of inept leadership by Mayor Paronella. At least he’s consistent. Sandra Curcio TOLGA

Donation of bikes helps Lions fundraise MANAGER of Casali’s Mareeba, Alex Arena, has donated a pair of ‘his and hers’ bikes to the Mareeba Lions Club. Alex said that the Lions Club was a very community focused organisation and he was quite sure they would put them to good use. Denis McKinley, President of the Mareeba Lions Club took delivery of the bikes last Wednesday and said that they will be part of the prizes on offer at this year’s Lions Metrogaine to be held in June.

SEASON READY: Atherton Roosters new recruit and prop forward Luke La Rosa.

League season kicks off THE 2018 Cairns District Rugby League premiership competition will start this weekend with the 100 year old Atherton Roosters playing at Smithfield against Ivanhoes on Sunday. Sunday marks the start of a tough draw for the Roosters who face their first four games playing away from home and all on Sunday afternoon’s. Roosters coach Graham Clark said the club had lost five regular first graders at the end of last season but

had recruited well in the off season and were confident of a good show in the season opener. “We have a strong mixture of quality youth and experience and plenty of local faces back at the club,” Clark said. Recent heavy rain had forced the Roosters to cancel two of their scheduled pre-season trials but they did get one in against Mareeba back on February 17. “Our preparation for the new season would have

been better with more trial football but I was happy with our effort and win against Mareeba. We had several young players debut in first grade for that game and they would have gained a lot of confidence.” said Clark. The Roosters were the big finishers in 2017 winning five of their last six regular games which included a win over Yarrabah who went onto be the 2017 premiers. Meanwhile at Maree-

ba on Saturday night the Gladiators host Kangaroos in their premiership opener. Mareeba also have a new coach in Matt Wakefield who looks to have arranged a solid player roster for the year ahead following several departures from the club’s 2017 line up. The Gladiators went down in their two recent pre-season trials against Atherton and Mossman but are expected to be a far stronger outfit for this Saturday.

A reunion for past Mareeba Wests, Easts and early Gladiator players is set down for later this year on July 6 and 7. More details can be obtained from Terry Roos by phoning 0438 554 339 or emailing terry. roos@bigpond.com. The 2018 CDRL premiership competition has been reduced from 22 to 20 rounds and the new under 20 grade (Colts) replaces the under 19’s.

Hoops and a lot of fun HONING the skills of tomorrow’s basketballers, Mareeba’s Aussie Hoopers is a fun way to introduce kids to the game. Created for kids aged five to 10 years old, the sessions are held every Wednesday evening at 3.30pm at the basketball venue on Walsh Street. “It’s all about hav-

ing fun and doing some drills,” said organisers. “It’s a great way for them to get a love of the game and learn the fundamentals.” Local kids are loving the opportunity to play the sport, with the primary comp now comprised of four teams.
