Time to invest in best bulls IT’S been a year of records for the surging beef cattle industry in Australia, despite unprecedented disruption to supply chains both in Australia and in key export markets. Record prices for young cattle have been a feature, aided by plentiful rain across much of the state including drought-parched areas such as western and south western Queensland.

For seedstock and commercial producers on the Atherton Tablelands it’s also been a buoyant year, with a highlight being increased southern buyer activity at the weekly cattle sale in Mareeba. Importantly many of these buyers have been willing to pay a premium for well-bred cattle, with considerably increased interest in Bos Taurusinfused stock along with continued support for Bos Indicus steers and heifers. As its name implies, the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day is all about improving the quality of beef produced in far north Queensland.

Our Better Bulls Best Beef motto is now more relevant than ever.

Processors and feeders will pay a premium for quality cattle and the fastest way to ensure a sustainable improvement in your herd is by investing in the best bulls. This is reflected across the country with average sale prices at stud bull sales commonly well above $10,000 and some instances more than $20,000. While this type of upfront outlay may seem high, producers will enjoy improved returns in steer calves through better weight gain, not to mention the genetic gain for years ahead in the retained heifers.

With prices still strong for most lines, it’s the ideal time to cull aggressively on aged or lesser quality females and bulls and reinvest in better bloodlines. You’ll have plenty of options to consider at this year’s 4th annual Tablelands Better Beef Open Day on Sunday, August 14.

Tablelands Better Beef Open Day 2022

More studs, more breeds, more choices in 2022 ANOTHER two studs have joined the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day in 2022, with a record 14 breeders taking part on Sunday, August 14.

The two new studs – Beki Speckle Park and Pinnacle Pocket Senepols – also add more variety to the cattle for sale on the day, with a record 13 different breeds represented this year. All studs simultaneously open their gates between 9am-5pm on Open Day, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to see sale bulls, herd sires, breeding females and young heifers and steers. Open Day president Nick Trompf says the event is highly informative and flexible for visitors. “There’s no set itinerary – you can plan your day around visiting as many studs as you wish and all at your leisure,” Mr Trompf said. “Attendance at the event has grown every year since it began in 2019

and the feedback from visitors and participating studs has been overwhelmingly positive. Buyers have come from vast areas of Queensland and as far away as northern NSW.

Several leading Brangus studs feature in the 2022 Open Day.

“This year promises to be even more interesting with more potential breeding options to choose from than any previous year.”

The 2022 event also sets another record in terms of sponsorship support.

Elders is the latest business to sponsor the event, joining long-time supporters including Cross Custom Meats, Malanda Rural Supplies, Tablelands Veterinary Service, NAB, Nutrien, Kennedy Rural and Top Stock Agencies.

“These sponsors are leading businesses in their sectors who are all passionate about growing the quality and scale of beef breeding and production in our region,” Mr Trompf said.

Make the most of the Open Day

Now in its fourth year, The Tablelands Better Beef Open Day is a collaborative effort which will see 14 studs simultaneously open their herds to visitors on Sunday, August 14, from 9am. To help you plan ahead and make your day a success touring the studs, here is a list of tips for the event...

WHAT YOU WILL SEE Each stud will have on display bulls and females, including sales animals and breeding stock. EVERYONE WELCOME There is no need to book or register in advance to attend properties. You are free to travel at your own leisure. PLAN AHEAD Plan your itinerary in advance using the map in this guide (which is also available on our Tableland Better Beef Open Day Facebook page). It is recommended that you visit no more than 4-5 studs on the day, allowing yourself enough time to inspect stock – and hopefully secure purchases. AMENITIES AND FOOD Not all studs have bathroom facilities available so please take this into account. Snacks and refreshments are typically offered, although alcohol is not provided. Please take care to travel safely. BIOSECURITY

Visitors to the Better Beef Open Day get informative updates from seedstock producers.

Please respect biosecurity measures such as parking in designated areas (spread of weeds is a big issue on the Tablelands).

Speckle Park – the full picture in black and white

BEKI (named for our four children Belinda, Emma-Lee, Kristopher and Ian) is a start-up Speckle Park stud between Kairi and Lake Tinaroo.

With a lifetime experience in the cattle industry, we are extremely impressed with the Speckle Park breed. To us their carcase attributes and growth rate are more important than their eye catching unique black and white Speckled appearance.

We see a huge future for Speckle Park cattle all over Queensland especially in a cross-breeding situation. Their fast growth rate, gentle temperament, high fertility, strong maternal attributes, the ability to thrive in a range of conditions, excellent food conversion and superior meat quality are factors that make Speckle Park the fastest growing breed in Australia.

Speckle Park cattle led us to establish a boutique stud in recent years. Our herd carries the foundation Canadian bloodlines including Prairie Hill PAR, Wildwood and are complimented by Notta and Underhill in our resident registered sire purchased from Dorroughby stud.

Santa demand drives expansion

NEW SIRE: Rosevale Reunion R130 bought by Tallangalook Santa Gertrudis for $32,000.

TALLANGALOOK’S foray into Santa Gertrudis began with buying a Waco sire at Beef Australia in Rockhampton in 2018 for composite bull breeding. So popular were sons of Waco M720 that Tallangalook launched its own Santa stud in 2020 with a handful of select females from the renowned Rosevale herd. Few herds boast data as deep as Rosevale, providing the perfect foundation for outstanding bulls for the future.

The demand for Santas in the far north has been such that Tallangalook last year secured a further 36 Rosevale females, instantly creating a top shelf female herd backed by proven genetics. Tallangalook also invested $32,000 in young sire Rosevale Reunion R130, boasting an exceptional pedigree in terms of fertility with his dam producing seven calves in the past seven years and granddam 14 calves. Moderate in frame and with data in the top 1% in the breed for fat cover, Reunion weighed 790kg at 23 months on sale day, the second highest daily gain of all registered bulls at the 2021 Rosevale bull sale.

Tallangalook recently collected more than 200 top-shelf straws from Reunion, with the semen testing 83% for motility and 78% for morphology. A limited number of straws are available for sale. As well as bulls for sale, a range of the Tallangalook Santa females will be on show at the 2022 Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. 10

FOR SALE ON OPEN DAY: Tallangalook R49 is an outstanding composite Santa x Shorthorn bull, weighing 750kg at 23 months.

More markets = more $ options CHASING flexible market options – weaners, feeders or bullocks? Want durable bulls backed by elite genetics and data? Keen to capitalise on the southern feedlot boom?

The maths speak for themselves when it comes to crossbreeding cattle – research shows that heterosis (hybrid vigour) adds up to 23% weight gain.

Tallangalook bulls will maximise hybrid vigour when used over Bos Indicus cows, producing exceptional F1 steers and fertile, maternal females.

Principal sire Bayview Archer M15 (bought last year as a mature bull for $15,000) is in the top 1% of the breed for EPDs at + $154.

Over the past 24 years, Tallangalook has been producing quality Shorthorn, Santa Gertrudis or composite bulls.

Increasingly, quality meat attracts quality price premiums, and Shorthorns rival the renowned Angus breed for marbling and taste.

This is important in satisfying the needs of feedlots, which have changed buying patterns across Australia in the first three months of this year with the percentage of stock on grain feeding jumping to 55% – up from 44.8% average in the five years previous.

Shorthorns stand alone in crossbreeding, forming the basis of 40+ breeds worldwide (Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster, Belmont Red, Murray Grey and Speckle Park to name just a handful).

To produce sires suited to Bos Indicus females, Tallangalook has used embryo transfer, AI and IVF to access the best Shorthorn genetics available.

He has bred superbly across multiple studs, with sons this year selling to $33,000 (twice). Our first drop of Archer calves at Tallangalook are characteristic of their sire – moderate birth weight, exceptional thickness and outstanding structure. Tallangalook will have an array of Shorthorn, Santa Gertrudis and composite bulls and females on display and for sale during the 2022 Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Quality Polls on show at Figtree THE Figtree Poll Stud was established by Norm and Val Tuxworth of the Cairns based trucking firm. They foresaw, earlier than most, the increased importance to the Cattle Industry of Polls. They spared no expense in investing in quality grey poll genetics from leading studs.

Another new Stud Sire at Figtree.

Ron and Jan Collier took over the stud after selling their New England holdings where they were large scale Angus breeders for the B3 market. We wanted to return home to Far North Queensland which is home to the family.

Each year Ear Notch samples are sent away for DNA Poll Testing. The Collier’s generally succeed in having around 75% returned as Homozygous Poll ( PcPc ). An outstanding result for a Poll Seedstock producer as they are. If you haven't had a chance to read up on Homozygous Poll bottom line means even mated to Horny cows, very rare to have a horned calf. A huge plus for many reasons. We have not dehorned in years. What a relief.

Poll genetics are complicated, still not plentiful and present a challenge to stud masters to do it well. Avoiding single trait selection for a balanced animal and keeping a strong poll pedigree, but not staying in too close require research and skill. We are working hard to keep all other important traits moving forward in the herd,”

We have added two new stud sires to the herd this year to work on thickness in the Polls. Our females have plenty of scale and frame. We don’t want to get them any bigger/high maintenance –

One of Figtree’s best Maiden Heifers. 12

very inefficient. “Now we are attempting to add a good shot of width and muscle.”

Polls are sometimes criticized as lacking Bone. Usually people assess Bone on the easy to see foreleg and comment on leg thickness. In the Collier’s view the length of Bone is more important as it determines muscle length and thus saleable meat yield Fertility is another particular focus as it is the biggest profit driver of all. The days to calving interval and age of first calf are available for each female.

We scrutinise this data carefully. The latest summer calf drop gave us 50% of the calves in the first 21 day cycle of the joining.

British Breeds in temperate and kinder climates. Our cattle are well handled and pattable in the paddock. They would have to be seriously mishandled to stir up. They are used to bikes and our working Kelpies – regrettably we no longer use horses. Bulls and Heifers generally available. Paddock sale bulls are in condition score 3-4. They are not sale prepped fat. We regard this practice as a regrettable, apparent requirement of multi vendor Bull Sales. Ron and Jan look forward to welcoming you to ‘Figtree’ at 235 Turner Road, Tarzali on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

Local cattlemen have been extremely happy with the hybrid vigour our bulls have put into their calves from breeds such as Droughtmasters, Brahman, Angus, British Whites, Composite and Dairy cows. Almost all of them have become return buyers.

We choose Murray Grey cattle because of their temperament, ease of calving, strong maternal traits, fertility, carcass quality and (because) they are naturally polled. Over the years elite genetics have been carefully selected and sourced from Murray Grey Studs from all over Australia from as far away as Western and South Australia, NSW and Tasmania. Our strong focus on structure, maternal traits, fertility, high milk figures and low birth weights as well as true to type of the breed, has truly paid off for us with 14

Droughtmaster, Australia`s own beef breed, created from adversity by pioneering pastoralists

GORDON Rasmussen`s “Euluma Droughtmaster Stud” overlooks the rolling hills at Julatten, 50km north-east of Mareeba. “Euluma” was founded in 1963 by his late father Jack, using at the time some of the beef industries finest bloodlines: including Cherokee Cody, Woondoo Commander, Mungalla Alistair and Kengoon Afro Kaiser, son of Truevale Fabian. Current stud sires are from Maunsell Park, Bundy, Bryvonlea, Brigalow Park and Connor Studs. “Euluma” is home to 300 breeding cows, in five single sire herds. On average only 15% of bull calves are kept entire, with the remaining sold as store steers to mostly return buyers. As a general rule the better weaner heifers are selected to replace the stud`s aged breeders and to other beef producers wanting quality replacement breeders.

Euluma Droughtmaster Stud, founded in 1963 and still going strong.

Bulls are prepared on property at “Euluma” for local on property sales. Paddock sales of bulls, heifers and cows are available by appointment. Throughout the years “Euluma” bulls have found homes, from right across the top end to Western Australia, as far south into Northern NSW, and breeders into New Britain, PNG. As a stud breeder I am a seed stock producer, I aim to provide the commercial beef producer with bulls and females that not only survive but thrive with as little inputs as possible and produce the best beef possible for the consumer. The “Euluma” Droughtmaster line has evolved over 59 years of meticulous selection to now provide functional, practical beef cattle, highly adaptable to

the sub tropical and tropical Australian environment. At “Euluma” important traits selected for are fertility, calving ease, maternal instincts, weight gain, parasite resistance, docility, environmental adaptability and meat quality.

“Euluma`s” mission statement – to breed the perfect “Beef Machine” for the Northern and Central Australian commercial beef industry. “In short, we at “Euluma Droughtmasters” strive to breed economical and efficient quality genetics, irrespective of the season or grazing conditions.”

PLEASE NOTE: Change of venue for Euluma to Mareeba Saleyards for the Better Beef Open on Sunday 14 August. Euluma will have bulls and females for your perusal.

Quality, tropical Bulls at Warrina ESTABLISHED in 1987, Warrina’s selection criteria has focused on highly fertile, medium framed, docile, polled Droughtmasters suitable for all northern conditions and markets. While concentrating on quality above quantity, Warrina Bulls area tropically adapted, easy doing, well-muscled cattle with tidy underlines.

As the Stud is located in the Wet Tropics, where conditions and climate are often extreme, replacement females are selected on stringent fertility performance and must be able to resist waves of Tick, Buffalo Fly and thrive in Tropical conditions while still producing Progeny capable of competing favourably against the best Cattle from Sub-Tropical and Temperate zones.

Recent Sires have come from renowned Prefixes, “Yaralla”, “Locarno”, and “Alma” Studs. Apart from selecting for superior physical and performance traits, we recongise that consistency comes from “Depth Of Breeding” and our breeders carry the best genetics of breed “Icons” such as “Billabong Julius Ceasar”, “Redskin X-Factor”, “Redskin Vision” and

Thriving breeding program results in award winning bulls

Pictured is the Maple Downs Q-Snorter. With a core focus on breeding hardier cattle, Maple Downs also have a strong focus on structurally sound cattle, easy doing and muscular carcass attributes and temperament.

MAPLE Downs Murray Grey stud is a family-owned business, located just outside of Malanda. On 160 acres, the family run a breeding herd, a replacement herd, commercial cattle, and stud and commercial bulls.

Their breeding program is seasonal, and accomplished by the use of Artificial Insemination, where they choose bulls from studs such as Wallawong (NSW), Lindsay (VIC) and Onward Murray Grey (NSW) studs to better the quality of their animals. Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) are thoroughly examined when considering bulls to use with their females. Our first purchase of females was in 2016, with two heifers coming from Victoria. From there, our breeding herd has expanded, to encompass genetics from the leading Murray Grey studs in Australia. A number of calves in specific family lines now demonstrate Maple Downs breeding for their Dam and Sire.

The Murray Grey breed originated in Australia, and is derived from Short Horn cattle and the Angus breed. Displaying the best of both of these breeds, Murray Greys are recognised internationally as high yielding carcass animals with exceptional eye muscle and optimum fat coverage. Murray Grey cattle display a number of 20

sought after attributes including early maturing, high fertility, tremendous weight for age and are also naturally polled. Although we have only been in the stud game for a short time, our breeding program is thriving. Bulls bred from our own Maple Downs bloodlines have been recognised and awarded champion status or higher at a number of shows in North Queensland.

Recently, comments were passed on our cattle to say “this bull has a soft easy doing, early maturity pattern, thick muscle from his topline down his hindquarter. A bull that is structurally correct and walks out on great bone. This bull is a bull that can go out and make a difference in the Murray grey breed and also in commercial breeding.”

Maple Downs tries to participate at the local shows every year, and endeavour to attend larger cattle displays such as Beef Australia, and the Brisbane Ekka. The core focus for breeding at Maple Downs is directed at breeding hardier cattle that will do well in any climate, particularly up here in the tropics, which is why we breed sleeker coated Murray Grey’s. In addition, they have a strong focus on structurally sound cattle, easy doing and muscular carcass attributes and temperament.

We believe these are important characteristics to display as they will boost productivity in both stud and commercial situations. We have also had great success crossing Murray Grey cattle with a variety of breeds to improve their commercial Quality. Crosses such as Droughtmaster and Charbray have proven great results with adding extra value to these tropical breeds, using the weight for age and carcass superiority of the Murray Grey. Currently, we are trialling Greyman cattle, by breeding Brahman females with Murray Grey bulls. So far, we are seeing promising results. Currently, bulls are sold privately, but Maple Downs is eager to begin participating in bull sales around Australia. Last year, stud bull Maple Downs Q-Snorter was sold to a commercial operation for $15,000, along with two other stud bulls. This Richmond (QLD) client is very pleased with these bulls and is eager to see what they will produce. He has returned this year for the purchase of three more bulls. Fassifern’s focus on quality cattle

FASSIFERN Limousin Stud has been operating on the Atherton Tablelands for the last 20 years. Over the last few years, a small stud Droughtmaster herd has also been established. Genetic diversification through the use of artificial insemination (AI) has allowed each cow to be matched individually to selected bulls that will maximise their full potential. Many hours are spent researching genetics both in Australia and overseas. Our breeding program is strongly focused on docility, polledness, softness (fat), muscling, structure, growth and milk production. We pride ourselves in performance recording for both herds and being part of Breed 22

Plan for the Limousin herd.

The majority of the Limousin breeding herd are French Pure or high grade Limousins. The stud is continuing to develop new bloodlines, including a few black Limousins. The Droughtmaster herd is primarily based on Glenlands and Warrina bloodlines, with the introduction of Minlacowie, Clonlara and Billabong AI sires. Fassifern Droughtmasters also purchased a new half share sire, Annandale Acres Canvas, from the 2022 February All Breeds Sale.

The herd is vaccinated for Pestivirus, 7-in-1 and 3 germ tick fever. All bulls are vaccinated against Vibriosis. The Limousin stud is now DNA tested

free for Proto (Protoporphyria—light sensitivity), and are DNA tested for the F94 muscle gene. A number of homozygous polled bulls will be available in the near future. Cross breeding with Limousins increases hybrid vigour, resulting in higher growth rates, increased muscling, better dressing percentages and therefore, higher returns for producers. Composite Limousin/Droughtmaster bulls and females will be available in the future with breeding in progress.

Reedybrook B Brahman Stud is backed by generations and over 60 years of experience breeding Brahmans with a focus on functional, pest resistant, paddock ready cattle.

As a stud we measure our success in our prime beef production where our results speak for themselves in terms of consistently high dressed weight for age without inputs, evident on our JBS feedback sheets. Our stud is committed to quality beef cattle and we do not use hormone treatments and do not feed our cattle, when we advertise as grass fed, paddock ready and enter competitions, our cattle come off grass and into the shows without any supplements. Reedybrook B Brahman Stud offers beef producers local access to global Brahman genetics at a fraction of the price of the Stud Sales.

“The convenience and access to our stud cattle mean buyers can come and inspect the bulls or heifers they are buying and see the consistency and quality of our cattle in the herd,” We have recently spent $183,000 on 7 stud heifers to complement the genetics of our herd and will be embarking on an embryo/IVF programme with Halgenaes Brahmans. Our many repeat buyers and volume buyers are testament to the quality of our cattle. To ensure they are market relevant, Reedybrook show cattle in most of the Prime Beef sections at the local Agricultural Shows where the focus is on beef production. “Our 2021 Prime Beef show circuit results were proof of our prime beef breeding, considering the high quality of all exhibits at Malanda, Innisfail and Cairns Show.” Visit Reedybrook B Brahman Stud at the Mareeba Saleyards on Sunday, August 14 and meet Brian Harriman at the Better Beef Open Day 2022. Tropical breeds, for the tropics Pinnacle Pocket stud, established in 2006 by Peter Spies, is the first registered Senepol stud established in the coastal tropics north of Rockhampton and only registered stud in Far North Queensland. The stud was established on Five Star and AACo bloodlines. Pinnacle Pocket breed fertile Senepol, Senepol composite and Senepol X Droughtmaster cattle well adapted to the conditions of tropical Australia. Peter’s son Tom now helps with the operation. The Pinnacle Pocket operation is based on the Atherton Tablelands, west of Cairns; at RN775 Glen Allyn Road, east of Malanda, next to Nerada tea estates on the North Johnstone River. The Senepol and Senepol Composite herds are run on high rainfall country, east of Malanda, near Mt Bartle Frere, Queensland's highest mountain. It is here we apply selection pressure on our breeders for fertility and insect resistance with high tick and buffalo fly

pressure, nutrition and tropical heat/ humidity issues. Southern operations cannot apply the same selection pressure and can go backwards in condition or take significant time to adapt.

The Pinnacle Pocket difference – our bulls are polled and slick-coated. They are paddock-raised and not fed up for sale. We sell out of the paddock thereby lowering the cost to buyers.

In producing cattle, we follow bestpractice commercial husbandry including early weaning, controlled mating and pregnancy testing with cows having to produce a calf every year. Our branding rate is typically over 90%.

All calves are raised from weaning, on the Tablelands, and the stud applies strong selection criteria to retained bulls and replacement heifers with emphasis on polledness, sheath, testicles, slick coat, fertility, temperament and structural correctness. Crossing with Senepols, increases hybrid vigour, lifts fertility, higher growth

rates, increased muscling, marbling and retail beef yield.

better

The stud has received some of the highest awards and commendations through the Far Northern Queensland show circuit since 2009, including Supreme Champion Beef exhibit Cairns show 2010 and Grand Champion bull at the Atherton, Malanda and Cairns Shows in 2011.

Both stud and herd bulls are available for inspection throughout the year with the bulk of bulls rising two years of age in the spring/early summer of each year. We guarantee the fertility of our cattle – with most Pinnacle Pocket bulls being sold with a Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation performed by a certified veterinarian. We are also a tested Pestivirus-free herd. Our cattle, bred for docility and fertility, are a pleasure to work with.

Structurally sound and functional droughtmasters

Kel-Lee Droughtmasters strives to produce quiet, quality, structurally sound and functional cattle that thrive in the harsh NQ climate.

KEL-LEE is a family owned and run operation situated at Upper Barron on the Atherton Tablelands, approximately 14 kilometres from the township of Atherton. Set on 126 acres on the Barron River, Kel-lee runs 40 head of breeders plus progeny, selected young bulls, replacement heifers, and steers year-round. The Kel-lee herd was started in 1991 based on Stedon, Mungalla, Kirknie and Bernleigh bloodlines. With Glenlands, Wylandra, Wingfield, Vale View, RSVP, and numerous other leading genetics added through the increased use of AI. With the continued addition of new bloodlines, Kel-lee feel they have gained 28

a real depth in our maternal lines with our females, and value the strength and power they add to our breeding program.

With over 30 years of in operation, we strive to produce quiet, quality, structurally correct and functional cattle with longevity, softness, and fertility to boot.

We aim to produce bulls and females that will go on and produce progeny, straight out of the paddock, either stud or commercial, that will suit the varying markets from the domestic butcher trade to the later Jap ox market. Bulls and females are sold at society sales or privately out of the paddock throughout the year.

We enjoy promoting our cattle through showing at local shows and field days including Townsville, Malanda, Atherton and Cairns and the FNQ Field Days and often attend Beef Australia where we have had great success over many years. Jeff, Kellie and Amy Williams look forward to opening their gates and welcoming guests to view their cattle and have a chat on Sunday, August 14 as part of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Kel-lee Droughmasters is located at 58 Hemmings Lane, Upper Barron. For more information phone 0417 950 133. Tablelands Better Beef Open Day 2022

Our family look forward to seeing you for the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day!

Trevor Pearce with a selection of Telpara Hills Brangus and UltraBlack heifers, which will be on display at the Better Beef Open Day and later sold in their on-property sale on Saturday 17 September, 2022.

Local buyers bag bargains at Telpara Hills Brangus and UltraBlack Cattle Sale ALTHOUGH Telpara Hills has become one of the biggest names in the beef stud industry in Australia, affordable options still make up nearly half of their sale offering. By attending the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, savvy local buyers can pre-select their potential purchases and secure both outstanding bulls and heifers on the Telpara Hills sale day that follows in September.

This was the trend that was set in 2020 and 2021 and the Pearce family hopes to repeat again this year. Although the top selling bull in last year’s sale sold for $50,000, the Pearce family encourages locals to not be deterred and still come to have a look for plenty of affordable options. In 2021, 45 of the sale lots sold for $10k or less, with some bulls purchased by local buyers for as little as $5,000.

The Local Tablelands stud Telpara Hills is recognised as one of the top cattle studs in Australia and credits their success on combining science and innovation with practicality and good cattle sense. “We’ve based our breeding programme 30

on the longest ultra-sounded herd in the world, which measures traits like marbling and muscle which makes all the difference when it comes to eating quality,” explains Stephen Pearce.

“We have then continued to measure and select for outstanding traits, so our Brangus herd often measures even better than many Angus. This is why they eat so well and butchers can’t get enough of Telpara bred steers. “The major abattoir in North Qld came to visit last week and told us they see a positive spike in meat quality when steers sired by our bulls come through. They want more.”

With perhaps one of the best reputations amongst butchers in the industry, Telpara sired animals regularly top the Mareeba livestock sale, if they even make it that far. “It’s actually become hard to buy Telpara bloodlines in steers or heifers. Usually they are sold straight out of the paddock to return buyers. There’s a real demand out there if you have Telpara Brangus to sell.” “We’re also offering a few special young

UltraBlack Bulls out of the top Angus sires in the country, including Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15, who sold sons for $280,000. It’s very exciting to continue to bring top-shelf genetics here to the Tablelands.”

Extended videos on every lot, thorough information in the catalogue, semen testing, carcase scanning, and DNA testing all makes the buyers equipped to select bulls and females with confidence. Online bidding and free freight to major centres (outlined in their catalogue) make it easy to buy even if you cannot make it to the sale. The Pearce family’s relaxed and friendly display will showcase approximately 120 bulls and 36 elite females as a preview to their on-property sale, which will be held in the same location on Saturday 17 September, 2022 at 157 Marnane Road, Tolga. For more information contact Stephen Pearce on 0439 532 132, or Fiona Pearce on 0439 774 309.
