Nominations open for Australia Day awards The search is on for Mareeba Shire’s biggest achievers.

Nominations for the 2019 Mareeba Shire Council Australia Day Awards are now open.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the awards are an opportunity to recognise Mareeba Shire’s unsung heroes who have done extraordinary things for or on behalf of the community.

“These awards are tailored to celebrate the achievements of individuals or groups who inspire us through their accomplishments in service to our community, culture and sports, and challenge us to make our own contribution to a better community,” Cr Gilmore said.

Nominations are not bound by specific categories this year. The judging panel will determine awards based upon application, in order of merit.

“Furthermore, the awards pay tribute to the special people in our community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the lives of others and contribute to a diverse, friendly and vibrant community,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We strongly encourage everyone to nominate someone they know to be considered for an Australia Day Award.”

Nominations are open to individuals, groups and community events within Mareeba Shire in a voluntary capacity.

Winners will be announced at Council’s annual Australia Day Citizenship and Awards ceremony at the Mareeba International Club on the evening of Friday 25 January 2019.

Nomination forms are available from the Mareeba Shire Council customer service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda, Shire libraries or online at www. msc.qld.gov.au.

Entries must be received by 3.00pm Monday 17 December 2018.

It’s time to clean up

IT’S time to clean up your community.

This year three young Tablelanders are hoping to make their community a little cleaner by hosting a ‘Great Northern Clean Up’ event on Sunday October 28 in Atherton.

There has never been a better time to get out and help clean up your backyard.

“It’s part of a national event that takes place every year during the months of August, Septem-

ber and October,” said Chantelle Pedersen, who is one of three Atherton Maize Festival Ambassadors organising the event.

The dynamic trio include Chantelle (charity ambassador), Sharee Andrews (emerging Ambassador) and Connor Le’Gear (junior ambassador).

The annual clean up has been running since 2009 and during that time more than 33,000 volunteers have removed around 2004 ute loads of rubbish from

907 sites around Australia.

When Chantelle saw it advertised she knew it was something they wanted to be involved with.

“I saw it being promoted on the TRC Facebook page and went to the website to check out the registered sites to see if I could join one and noticed that there were no sites registered in Atherton,” said Miss Pedersen.

“So we registered and chose the Atherton Mountain Bike Skills Park and along Priors

Join the Light the Night walk Light the Night is the Leukaemia Foundation’s evening lantern walk, where Australians come together and transform the darkness into a sea of glowing light to beat blood cancer.

The night will take your breath away. It’s an empowering, beautiful and supportive event that brings family and friends together with a united goal; to fund research that will help beat blood cancer.

A Light the Night event in Mareeba will be held this Saturday, October 20, at the Mareeba Leagues Club from 5.30 pm to 8pm.

When you register for Light the Night, you receive a special lantern on the night to carry

Anyone who feels the same way is welcome to join in the clean up. Kits will be provided on the day which include bags and a sharps disposal kit. Everyone is welcome and children under 15 years will need to be accompanied and supervised by an adult and all volunteers will need to register.

Those involve will also receive a Great Northern Clean Up certificate for participating and Cross Custom Meats is kindly donating 100 sausages for a sausage sizzle so you won’t go hungry. People should bring sun protection and gloves, as well as sturdy walking shoes.

The Great Northern Clean Up event will be held on Sunday October 28 at Priors Creek and Atherton Mountain Bike Skills Park. Meet at 1 Vernon Street at 8am.

as darkness falls. Lanterns are raised high in a moving ceremony to pay tribute to those facing their own blood cancer journey and to remember loved ones lost, creating a glowing sea of support.

Together, the crowd then carry their lanterns along a reflective walk to “Light the Night”.

Each coloured lantern carries a special meaning – Gold to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, white for those diagnosed themselves and blue to show community support for all those affected.

ICE – Not even once DO not try ICE, not even once – this is the message being delivered across the nation and one that was emphasised on Wednesday night as the Mareeba community came together to help put the freeze on this dangerous and deadly drug.

The community forum, hosted by the Australia Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC), gave those in attendance the knowledge and tools needed to say “Not Even

Once” when this insidious drug is almost invariably offered to them.

The night also featured powerful and moving stories from former ICE addicts as well as educational videos on the dangerous chemicals used to make ICE and horrifying photos on what it does to the body.

With the effects of the drug still evident years later, the former users shared their personal

experience with the drug and what it did to their lives.

Now recovered, Andre’a Simmons, AAIC Founder and Chief Executive, gave a personal insight into the do’s and don’ts, the campaigns story and an education into the life of an ICE addict.

The fight for a better range road continues Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack paid a flying visit to Far North Queensland last week in the wake of the Kuranda Range Road debate. The purpose – to see whether State Transport and Main Roads Minister Mike Bailey, will add the road to the National Highway Network Extension.

“I can see there are issues with congestion, changes of speed limits and that the freight movement will double in the next few years,” the Deputy PM said.

“We will have to do a business case, what the benefits are economically to the region and we would have to work closely with the State government. It’s

now been placed on the radar with the Queensland minister and we will see where it goes from there.”

In addition, The Express attempted to get comment from Craig Crawford (Member for Barron River), Michael Healy (Member for Cairns), Curtis Pitt (Member for Mulgrave) and Cynthia Lui (Member for Cook).

The Express only received replies from two MP’s – Michael Healy’s office who said “We should talk to Craig Crawford because the Kuranda Range was in his electorate,” and Cynthia Lui who stated “The Kuranda Range Road is critical infrastructure that links my electorate to

vital services, freight and economic development opportunities,” “Clearly, it’s a difficult road but we also need to be realistic about future plans. My main focus is to improve road conditions and ensure drivers safety. I am more concerned about what can be done in the immediate future and deliver on realistic outcomes.

“I will continue to advocate for my electorate by working closely with the Member for Barron River and the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to improve the safety of the Kuranda Range Road for all road users.”

The Kuranda Range Road has

some 10,000 vehicle movements per day and there is a likelihood that many of these commuters live in the electorate of Cairns and Barron River.

To gain more insight, the Wet Tropics Management Authority (WMA) were also contacted and released the following statement.

The WMA works closely with infrastructure providers throughout the Wet Tropics to ensure appropriate standards are in place to ensure best practice road construction and maintenance are applied within the World Heritage Area.

The Wet Tropics Management Authority can’t currently comment on specifics of this pro-

ject, as no formal proposal has yet been provided.

As with any other proposals, an upgrade to the Kuranda Range would be assessed under the Wet Tropics Management Plan (1998), which guides land use activities in the Area with a zoning and permit system.

This would take into consideration wildlife, scenic and community impacts.

The Authority previously endorsed a rezoning process in 2007 to support an upgrade to the Kuranda Range and some works have been undertaken since that time.

As part of the process, the Authority recommended that

the protection and restoration of wildlife corridors, particularly for iconic animals such as the cassowary, should be a key consideration in the staging of any works.

The Authority has a strong relationship with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and will work with them on any road projects with the World Heritage Area.

“Mareeba has so much to offer and it’s important everyone supports local businesses, especially at the busiest time of the year.” said Cr Wyatt.

Businesses along Byrnes Street will be open late from 5pm, plus a pop up square with local businesses located in the block of land opposite The Gateway Hotel.

The Mareeba Post Office Centre Christmas Night Markets will also be kicking off on the Friday night and one lucky shopper will again walk away with a mega prize drawn on the night with vouchers and gifts from all participating businesses.

Community bank keeps giving back Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches will hold a Community Grants Program award presentation to celebrate $116,400 in grants being awarded to eight organisations undertaking valuable projects in the local area.

Administered by Community Enterprise Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, the 2018 Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Grants Program received a large number of applications

with more than 12 organisations seeking funding for projects.

“We were very impressed with the quality of applications received and are delighted to be able to support a range of projects, many of which may not have been financially viable without the support of our Community Bank Branch,” Chairman Gilbert said.

Since opening in 2005/2006 Mareeba & Dimbulah, Community Bank Branches have returned more than $2,371,498

to the Mareeba and Dimbulah Communities.

This year will be particularly exciting as we witness the valuable contribution and impact our $116,400 in grants will make to the community groups and the communities in which we live,” Gilbert said.

“We look forward to congratulating all of the successful recipients at our 2018 Community Grants presentation night of November 20 in Dimbulah.”

Donation to help The Base FlexiChoice received a generous donation last week thanks to the Fagnano Castello Calabrian Club in Mareeba.

Mareeba school celebrates 125 years

Property damaged by the light of day

Youths are being blamed for a spate of vandalism and vehicle damage in a parking lot off Byrnes Street Mareeba over the past few weeks.

The Express was made aware of the damage by locals who work within the vicinity and who have had their vehicles dented and scratched during daylight hours.

Upon further investigation vandals have also written graffiti on walls, lit fires and spray painted a security light so the culprits couldn’t be seen at night.

Staff from the ANZ bank, the Commonwealth Bank and other businesses in the area thought their vehicles would be safe in the car park during the day.

Carna Madrid who had her new Mazda damaged in the attack said “We shouldn’t have to put up with this, these vehicles cost a lot of money, our vehicles

should be safe in these designated car parks and all of the people who have had their cars damaged hope they catch the culprits”.

A spokesperson from Mareeba Police said they are aware of youths loitering in the area and have stepped up patrols to stem the damage not only to vehicles but property as well.

Those who have had vehicle damage during daylight hours are encouraged to come forward and inform police of any damage so reports can be filed and patrols increased.

Any suspicious behaviour should also be reported by people using the car park to help stamp out this unlawful behaviour.

Mareeba State School has certainly changed a lot since 1893, but in that time one thing has remained the same.

The weekend saw hundreds of past and present teachers, students and parents head back to the school where their education began to join in the special 125th anniversary celebrations – many remembering what a great place it was to grow and learn.

“I started school here in 1958, my children went here as well and I was also P&C president during their schooling years,” said organising committee member Stephen Srhoj.

“Our family has been connected with the school for a long time and it’s always been a great school.”

Mareeba’s oldest primary school marked the milestone with three days of celebrations.

The celebrations kicked off with a meet and greet on Friday

night with more than 100 in attendance where they reminisced and caught up with school friends, teachers and colleagues.

One Saturday, the celebrations continued with a day of school tours, a roll call, displays, performances, fun activities and specials guest speakers.

New contents for the time capsule were also collected on the day which will now be sealed away for another 25 years.

The weekend ended with Mareeba’s first ever colour run on the school oval to mark the occasion.

School principal, Mandy Whybird said the whole weekend was fantastic and one that she was proud to part of.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic,” said Mrs Whybird.

“People came from all over and the stories that came out over the weekend have been great to hear.”

Key gains include a jump from early oil yields of 100-150 kilograms per hectare to new cultivars which consistently yield 350-450 kg/ha.

This increase in productivity has delivered an estimated annual $4.5 million benefit to growers and $75 million to the Australian economy over the last 17 years.

Globally, pure Australian Tea

Tree Oil is an iconic product sold throughout the world and tea tree oil now generates more than $35 million a year in export sales.

Australian Tea Tree Industry Association Ltd (ATTIA) CEO, Tony Larkman praised the industry and welcomed the milestone, saying a number of contributing factors has taken the industry from strength to strength.

“The establishment of the Tea Tree Oil RD&E Plan 2018-2022 is a big win for industry and provides the structure needed to guide R&D investment and grow the industry,” said Mr Larkman.

“Ongoing R&D funding will ensure the industry continues to develop and tea tree oil retains its status as a key ingredient in healthcare, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, veterinary and industrial products.”

Local Tea Tree farmers, Joe

Mirarchi and Makse Srhoj who have seen both the good and the bad times, are quite confident that the Tea Tree industry will continue to flourish.

Joe Mirarchi is relatively new to the industry having started Tea Tree farming just three years ago.

“I came into the Tea Tree industry when it was at its peak and luckily it has maintained that steady market. As long as the market remains stable then we can earn a living out of it.” he said.

Makse Srhoj, from Emerald Creek, has been in the industry for some seven years and said “While it was slow going at the start, the steady increase in the price of Tea Tree oil over the last 4 to 5 years has made the industry viable and we’re just making a living.”

Dimbulah farmer Italo Pellizzer, Chair of NQ Essential Oils Co-op said “Prices for tea tree oils are between $35 and $40 a kilo, but farmers in the industry are still burdened by the price of Water and electricity.”

“We have to manage those issues on top of the new “Dieback”

soil disease that some farmers are experiencing, where if not managed correctly could destroy a crop.”

Wally Dal Santo, who is the vice Chair of NQEO Co-op, began growing tea tree in 1995 and has seen a steady growth in the popularity of Tea Tree oil.

“At the time it was a good alternative to tobacco. It’s fully mechanised and as long as the market is steady and the international price of Tea Tree oil doesn’t fall dramatically like it did five or six years ago, down to $10 per Kilo then we will be ok.” he said.

Ag-tech workshop for primary producers A free workshop on October 24 in Mareeba will provide primary producers the tools to take advantage of the digital age.

The event is an initiative of FNQ Growers, using funding under the State Government’s Training in Emerging and Innovative Industries Fund, with the support of the Australian Government’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme.

The funding provides assistance to industries impacted

by digital technology and aims to address current and emerging skills shortages in industry, support workforce development needs and create an environment where innovation, flexibility and industry focus are paramount.

FNQ Growers Chair Joe Moro said the workshop would explore opportunities and benefits of ‘digital adoption’ for primary producers.

“The digital age is here to

stay and while some primary producers have adopted technology in many aspects of farming, there are others who are challenged by it,” Mr Moro said.

“This workshop provides a perfect opportunity to understand the drivers, trends and opportunities offered in the agtech age and how, even with small steps, primary producers can capitalise on what is available.”

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman had earlier congratulated FNQ Growers on securing the funding which will make the transition to new practices as easy as possible.

“We want to ensure Queenslanders working in agriculture have the opportunities to upskill and reskill and be ready for the jobs of tomorrow,” Ms Fentiman said.

“As technology changes we

need to provide much needed training so we can continue to be competitive in the Australian and international markets.”

Leanne Kruss, Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network Manager (FNQ), said presenters from TAFE, Growcom and the Entrepreneurs Programme would deliver sessions on all aspects of the digital farm including software, apps, data and artifical intelligence.

“This practical information

will be supported with case study examples to help primary producers develop their own digital strategy,” Ms Kruss said.

NOW in it’s 50th year, the annual Torimba Festival is a community celebration of Tourism and Timber with events running over two weeks in October each year.

The festival has an exciting program up of events from a golf ambrose, barefoot bowls, hoedown, cake stalls, poetry reading, bingo and so much more.

Saturday saw the Mardi Gras Parade with an array of floats on display down the main street.

The organising committee wanted to thank everyone who took part on Saturday.

Of course, thank you to all of the spectators who came along to watch the float procession, woodchops, and truck pull, to all of the people who held a street stall on the

With six young ladies as queen entrants this year, the judges will have a difficult decision this Saturday, October 20, choosing the 2018 Torimba Festival Queen at the Torimba Ball.

The night will see the crowning of the Torimba Queen, Miss Charity and Miss Personality.

When Ante Milicevic purchased a number of Bayer products from the local TGT store in Dimbulah, little did he know that staff had entered his name into a national competition to win a Polaris ranger farm buggy worth over $16,000.

Having just moved to Mutchilba after purchasing a farm in the area, Ante was very surprised to receive a call from TGT staff to inform him of his win.

“Yeah very surprised,” he said.

“It’s going to get quite a bit of use on the farm too – getting around checking irrigation on the limes and tea trees – it will be very handy.”

Report suspicious behaviour around fire areas Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) crews remaind on scene last week at a bush fire that had been burning on the Tablelands for more than 25 days.

With the fire danger in the region remaining on high and with high temperatures, high winds and low humidity expected, people are reminded that permits are needed to light fires in the area.

Tablelands detectives are urging residents to report all suspi-

cious behaviour in relation to anything they see around the Tablelands fire areas.

Sergeant Bill Stanley of Far North District Disaster Management Group (FN DDMG) said people should keep the welfare of fire-fighting personnel in mind.

“Our primary concern is for personnel fighting fires, we have had multiple fire fronts over the past weeks,” Sergeant Stanley said.

“The QFES are now confident that some of these fires have been

deliberately lit and this is placing personnel in danger due to fires being started behind them.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Devine said police are calling for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activities to come forward and report the information to either Tablelands Detectives on 4030 3315 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“We have concerns that a number of recent fires in the Tablelands area have been unlawfully lit,” Detective Senior Ser-

geant Brett Devine said.

“Deliberately lit fires can lead to the loss of life, property and puts the lives of emergency workers in danger.

“We are asking that common sense is used and that members of the community keep their ears and eyes open and report suspicious behaviour before things get out of control.

“All fires over 1 meter by 1 meter require a Fire Permit and therefore even if property owners feel their property is in danger of

current fires burning in their area and decide to start backburning, they are not only committing an offence, but they are putting fire personnel in danger.

“What needs to be remembered is the unforeseen consequences of deliberately lit fires.

“Not only can these fires lead to the loss of property but also the loss of life.

“Unfortunately, if that is the case police may be investigating life imprisonment offences such as manslaughter and arson.”

For the third time running the Atherton Tablelands will host the 2018 Future Agro Challenge (FAC) on November 16 and 17 this year.

The challenge is currently open for applications and is seeking startups to compete for the chance to represent Australia in the global competition.

The Future Agro Challenge is a global platform bringing together food and agribusiness stakeholders and players to create the acceleration for startups to fulfil their potential in finding solutions to local, regional and global challenges.

The most promising ideas and ventures are selected to compete in the global championships for the title of “Agribusiness of the Year”.

Talent on show at Country music festival MAREEBA'S Rodeo arena was transformed into a three-day boot scooting, country music extravaganza at the weekend for the annual FNQ Country Music Festival.

The festival saw an exciting and talented mix of the ages who belted out old classics and modern tunes for all to enjoy.

Hosted by the Walkamin Country Music Club, hundreds flocked to the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds over the three days to enjoy all the festival had to offer.

The Saturday night main

show featured a host of local and visiting artists and on the Friday night the crowd was treated to the amazing vocals of the ‘Homegrown’ band.

New comers to the world of country music were encouraged to compete in the Talent Quest, which was run across the three days, with the final on Sunday.

Local Mareeba singer Jolene Ross was named the 2018 Country Music Australia Academy (CMAA) scholarship winner and will now be heading off to Tamworth in July next year to work

with the best of the best in the industry in a series of workshops.

Organiser Jody Bell said it was a great weekend full of amazing talent.

“The level of talent on display this year was amazing and we always encourage more kids to take advantage of the CMAA scholarship and enter the quest next year,” said Jody.

“The festival has been going now for 23 years and each and every year the talent coming through in all the categories is inspiring to see.”

Building to success

Linda Gloger and Anthony ‘Bruiza’ Merenda are looking forward to the upcoming championships and determined to bring home more silverware.

There's a lot more to bodybuilding than just tans and poses.

It takes commitment, dedication and a desire to succeed.

For Anthony 'Bruiza' Merenda and Linda Gloger it's also a way of life.

And, it’s all paying off for the local bodybuilding duo who recently returned home with silverware from the state championships of their chosen federations.

Bruiza, who has been bodybuilding for 10 years, but just

returned to competing after a five year break, gained third place in men’s novice, while Linda walked away with two firsts and a third in her three divisions. The wins mean no downtime for these two as they now prepare for the

nationals.

But this success doesn’t come easy. They train up to seven days a week, multiple times a day and follow a strict nutritional diet to compliment their regime.

“But that's what it takes to succeed,” said Anthony who is also owner the Furious Fitness gyms in Atherton and Mareeba.

In competition, athletes are judged on certain criteria depending on their division, such as symmetry, muscularity and conditioning. The preparation for competition can be gruelling, but competing is why they do what they do and of course the will to win.

“Training is full on in the lead up to a competition, but there’s a lot more than just working out to be a bodybuilder, nutrition is a big part of it – I have been eating up to six meals a day for the past 20 weeks in preparation – it’s all about balance and what works for you,” said Anthony.

“Then on comp day, it’s not easy being up on stage, but I had mates from all over Australia who came to watch and support

me and while I couldn’t see them, I could hear them in the crowd cheering me on,” “I do it because I enjoy working out, it’s a good stress relief, but of course I want to win as well.

“Winning keeps us going, we train to win.”

For Linda, she loves everything about the sport.

“I love it all, everything about it. Coming into the gym, doing the work, the social side, the muscle mind connection, I just love it and I’m in it to win it,” said Linda.

“I make the most of every moment at competition. I love walking up on stage and being up there, it’s just an amazing experience.

Linda came first in the Ms QLD Figure Over 57kg, as well as the Ms QLD Figure Open Class Two and third in the Figure International Open at the ICN State Championships.

The mum of two is now determined to bring home the shield from the world championships in two weeks time.

“I have missed out on the overalls twice and right now I am so focussed on where I am going and what I want – you can do anything if you believe that you can.”

Linda also has a strong passion for helping others achieve their goals.

“I believe that nothing can make you feel better than the right nutrition and training,” said Linda.

“As a mother of two, it is important to me that my children and people around me learn by example. I take great pride in people watching me set my goals and work hard towards achieving them. I love encouraging and helping other people in the gym as I believe we are all on our own journey and people often need to hear positive feedback in order to keep progressing.”

Bruiza will head off this weekend to the IFBB Pro League Australia National Championships, while Linda will compete in the ICN World Championships on the Gold Coast on October 27 and 28.

For the past 12 months 0 local Madison Dry, has been bodybuilding with the dream to compete in Australasian Natural Bodybuilding Federation (ANB) Australian national championships.

That dream became a reality last weekend when Madison placed third in Australia overall in her division.

After competing in the ANB QLD state titles last month in the fitness novice division, Madison gained first place. She also went onto win the under 25’s fitness division and then cleaned up in the open, making her the new state champion.

As state champion, Madison flew to Sydney for the national championships where she shined on stage to take out third overall.

Madison does her training at Furious Fitness in Atherton under the watchful eye of her coach Peter Campbell.

“I owe everything I have achieved to Peter. He is an awesome coach, we’re working towards my Pro-Card where if I win a number of national titles I’ll become a professional in the field of body building.” Madison said.

For now though, it’s light on the bodybuilding as her body recuperates from the extensive training schedule so she can prepare for next years competition.

Latest Basketball craze hits Mareeba It’s new, it’s exciting and it’s a great way to keep fit and stay healthy.

Mareeba Basketball in excited to introduce ‘3 on 3 Basketball’ for players to have something to do in the off season and for those keen to give the sport a go in a fun and social environment.

Basketball enthusiast, Tyson Tatti is coordinating the effort to introduce this new Olympic sport to Mareeba with a few changes to the structure to keep players more interested.

The 3 on 3 all-male competition will be played with teams on a half court with one hoop and with a 12 second shot clock.

Scoring goes by ones and twos, which will be played over two, 12 minute halves and the usual basketball rules apply.

Teams are allowed a maximum of four players per team and you must be over 14 years of age.

If you’re registered with Mareeba Basketball or otherwise with Basketball Queensland, then the only cost is a $25 team payable to your captain. If you are not registered then it’s $100 per team and you must register at www.mareeba.basketball.net. au and pay your $25 team fee to your captain.

Cricket kicks off

MAREEBA Cricket season started with the Woolworths 20/20 blast on friday afternoon.

The little ones then played on Saturday morning with lots of fun.

The Under 13’s travelled to Port Douglas with Mareeba scoring 10/106. Bryce Fincham got 20 not out, Kai Harriman 15 and Tyler Srhoj 11. Port Douglas scored 6/149.

The Under 15’s also played on Saturday at Borzi Park in

Mareeba and ended the match on 3/103. Angus Campman got 33 not out, Jamie Curcio 21 and Tristan Lopez 18 not out. Rovers replied with 3/155.
