$220,000 investment for Tracey

Tracey Beikoff is back in Mareeba and excited about her future in business, after receiving a $220,000 financial injection on the popular ‘Shark Tank’ television show.

Heartfelt search

FOUR years ago, John McFadden and his sisters had never heard of Mareeba, yet alone the Atherton Tablelands.

Yet it was a quest to find a father he never knew, which ultimately lead him to Mareeba.

A concerted family effort to find their missing father had appeared fruitless over several years, until Mr McFadden had a breakthrough while searching online in 2010.

“My father (Harold Seymour McFadden) disappeared from our family during the 1950’s, after both divorce and WWII,” he said.

“Via the Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages website, I was shocked to discover that he had died in Mareeba.

“The death certificate indicated that he was buried in the Mareeba Cemetery on November 3, 1960; with this information being supplied to Mareeba police by an informant.

“Up until four years ago, I had never heard of

Mareeba. On finding its location, I asked myself: Why did he go to Mareeba?

“I now believe this was because of his association with US army small ships in WWII; as Cairns was the last port of call for small Australian and New Zealand vessels before they left Australian waters, serving larger US war ships in the Pacific Islands.”

Once processing this information, Mr McFadden said his next decision was to locate his father’s gravestone.

Needing assistance and understanding his situation, several members of the FNQ community did their best to help him.

Anna Parisotto (from Mareeba Shire Council) got the ball rolling, locating Harold’s gravesite number, along with an aerial picture of the general vicinity of the gravesite.

After solid research, Mr McFadden and his wife travelled from Canberra to Mareeba by car.

Gaining a career in education

MAREEBA State School hosted a residential workshop for the Remote Area Teacher Education Program last Wednesday.

A program designed to give more indigenous students an opportunity to gain a career in education, RATEP again looks to play a major role in not only Mareeba, but our region as a whole.

Students who undertake the program are given vital theory and practical experience, while being able to still live locally with their family and friends.

Program stakeholders presented an overview of the program in the school library, which was filled with interested and intuitive people.

Successful entrants to the program are able to complete various certificate or diploma courses at TAFE during their on the job training, with the opportunity to follow on with a Bachelor of Education at James Cook University.

RATEP Diploma Coordinator Mark Linkson said over 250 applications had been submitted across the state for admittance into the program, with solid participation in the Far North, particularly in Ravenshoe.

Currently, 32 per cent of Mareeba State School’s students are indigenous.

With support from RATEP and Mandy Whybird (Mareeba SS School Principal), the students are heading in the right direction.

Mrs Whybird, who spent time in Weipa

and the Torres Strait as a teacher, clearly understands the importance of indigenous culture.

She said the RATEP program was a phenomenal experience for all involved and the school was committed to assisting more indigenous students in their transi-

tion to an education-based career.

ATHERTON State School students are again making a special gesture for patients in hospital, through homemade Easter baskets.

Coordinated by Year 4 teacher Maria Parenti, this inspiring project is currently in its third year, with two recent staff additions welcoming its place in the school term.

Mr Nick Shirley has recently commenced tenure as the school’s new principal, with Ms Kylie Jones his deputy.

Both were on hand to admire the hard work put in by the students, with the gesture really lifting the spirits for those doing it tough in hospital.

Mrs Parenti said the project had received really good feedback and was an important part in helping students become more community aware.

“The initiative is all about promoting community awareness,” she said. “The hospital patients wake up to find their baskets on Easter Sunday, which really brighttens up their day.”

Mr Shirley added that he was incredibly proud of the school’s community spirit.

“I’m very proud of my new school and to be helping the community; especially people in hospital.

“I’m even more proud that the year 4’s have taken on this community project.”

Teachers and staff would like to thank the Yungaburra QCWA for donation of the Easter basket eggs.

Missing World War II soldier found buried in Mareeba

FROM PAGE 1 Upon arriving, he sat down with both Shellina McKellar (MSC) and Elwyn Troughton (local historian) and discussed the best course of action in finding his father’s grave.

“Elwyn had sent me invaluable research and a schedule of known grave numbers,” he said. “Although, Harold’s grave could not be pinpointed on the ground, because existing grave numbers were set in an ‘illogical’ pattern.

“But Elwyn had given me some clues on rows and layouts (prepared in 1960) and together with her and the MSC, we were able to unravel the code of grave numbers within the original aerial location and agree on the exact location.”

Once locating the grave, Mr McFadden sought further information on his father and whether records of his burial were still accessible.

Through the support of Mick Grant (Guilfoyle Funerals), Mr McFadden was able to view the original burial record, along with information of an advertisement placed in the Cairns Post.

Mr McFadden and his wife then made a visit to Cairns, where they discovered references to Harold’s time with US WWII ships at the National Library of Australia; after research from a dedicated library staff member, Kylie.

Mareeba clearly has left a special place with the McFadden family in more ways than one, with Mr and Mrs McFadden saying it was a lovely region to visit.

‘I want to keep Mareeba clean’

By Justin Fris WHILE many people are still in bed early in the morning, Keith Nelson is combing the streets in a bid to have them presentable.

Along with his friend, John Gordon, Mr Nelson begins his cleaning run from 5.15am in the morning, covering a variety of routes, six days a week.

“On a good day, we will be finished within an hour and a half,” he said. “On a bad day, it is more like two and a half hours.”

With so many events and tourists passing through the town, Mr Nelson believes it is important for Mareeba to be appealing as possible.

Gearing up for Wheelbarrow Race

MAREEBA State High School will be firmly represented at the upcoming ‘Great Wheelbarrow Race’, which will be held between May 15 and 17.

Dubbed ‘Ninety Niners Remix’, these dedicated students (pictured) will be doing there bit for community spirit and the overall experience as a whole.

The large majority of team members have all completed the race before, which typically brings in competitors from a variety of locations.

Staged over three days in a relay format, the 140km distance is separated into three parts: Mareeba to Dimbulah (42km), Dimbulah to Almaden (65km) and Almaden to Chillagoe (33km).

Festivities will begin for competitors at Firth Park, where all concerned will be briefed about rules and expectations for the event.

Competitors will then proceed toward Vaughan Street, Mareeba, where the race will start. Solo and duo entrants will begin stage one at 6.30am, while teams will commence at 10am.

There is sure to be several sights along the journey, which may distract competitors temporarily from the rigours of their gruelling task.

NNR team member Brett Girgenti said the overall experience of the event was enjoyable, although most people pulled up sore for a couple of days after it.

Mareeba local impresses with ‘authentic’ Aussie product

ENTERPRISING Mareeba local Tracey Beikoff is excited about her future in business, after receiving a $220,000 financial injection from Steve Baxter on the popular ‘Shark Tank’ television show.

Ms Beikoff’s product, dubbed ‘The Rescue Swag’, is extremely versatile and was created after a set of personal experiences.

The swag can transform into a sling, splint, compression device or even be used as a water carrier. Such are the dimensions; it can be attached on horseback, bikes, or even carried in your hands and it will not jostle around.

Another key component of the swag is its unique technological advancements. Should you require instruction on a particular incident, you can scan your smartphone device and receive written and pictorial instruction on how to remedy the situation.

No network coverage? No worries! The instructions can be accessible with an active SIM card, therefore the application can be accessed anywhere. Through hard work and a vision to help others, Ms Beikoff said she was excited that Mr Baxter had elected to support her.

Mr Baxter’s contribution will be made into two parts: $100,000 for 40 per cent stake in her company, along with a further $120,000, which will be paid back through $10 per unit sold in royalties.

“I’m over the moon that Steve chose to put

his money into Rescue Swag. This is more than a business to me, it’s about saving lives and preventing serious injury.

“Being a lover of horse riding and a bushwalking and camping fanatic, I was looking for a practical first-aid kit that had everything you need for the Aussie outback without being a nuisance to carry around.

The experience of preparing for Tracey’s presentation took several months worth of planning.

Her segment was filmed early in the morning, and she actually hadn’t even eaten breakfast.

“We were taken into the green room and were then called in for hair and makeup,” she said. “I was prepared, aware of my pitch and felt an incredible sense of validation when the deal came through.”

Mr Baxter congratulated Ms Beikoff on her authentic ‘Aussie’ project and said he was really excited about working with her.

“It’s not often a product blows me away, but I am really excited about The Rescue Swag. Tracey has created an authentically Aussie product that is a necessity for any sort of great outdoors adventure.

As an ex-serviceman, a fisherman and a pilot, I can see a million and one situations where Rescue Swag could make a real difference,” he said.

“Ultimately, Tracey won me over with her pitch because she handled herself in a way that demonstrated her command of the business and showed she had a strong drive to succeed.”

Since the deal was finalised, Ms Beikoff has remained in regular contact with Mr Baxter and his team, as they continue to gain traction in the marketplace.

Theatre supporters unite ahead of council vote

Supporters of the Atherton Performing Arts theatre gathered last Saturday ahead of Thursday’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting.

One of the many agenda items for the morning will include a vote on whether the APA will continue tenure in its current location.

Tableland Investments (who manage the SILO Road Shopping Centre) presented to councillors two weeks ago and suggested the prospect of assisting with the relocation of the APA from its current facility.

If the APA did relocate from their current premises, Tableland Investments have mooted the possibility of adding 100 additional car bays on the site.

Representatives informed councillors that they were not trying to get rid of the APA and wanted the organisa-

tion to have an improved facility if they chose to relocate.

Initially built by the US army between 1942 and 1943, the ‘Igloo’ was originally used to house ammunition.

Many years later, the theatre grew into a functional theatre, with the Atherton Performing Arts having occupied the facility since 1981.

In 2012, the APA acquired a new Yamaha piano, in a bid to entice local and international musicians to Atherton. Many have commented on the excellent acoustics the venue possesses.

APA Supporters hit the pavement, eagerly getting petitions signed. Young children eagerly led the way down the main street, with no one bypassing the crowd.

Thursday’s meeting will begin at 9am in the TRC boardroom, with presentations from both the APA and Tableland Investments prior to the vote.

104 reasons to be smiling Scholarship for Oliver to study Oliver Cotterill (pictured) will soon start a Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree at James Cook University in Townsville, with the help of a scholarship from the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches.

Chosen from a field of applicants for the annual scholarship, Oliver’s dream will become a reality, as this program is one which helps first-year university students on their path to tertiary education with a $20,000 bursary over a two year period.

Excited about his scholarship, Oliver said the worry of living away from home would be significantly less.

“I can’t wait to get started and work towards my goal of achieving my physiotherapy degree,” he said.

“This scholarship means I will be able to focus on my studies more and worry less about the costs of living away from home.”

Company Chairman Gilbert Teitzel said Oliver was a tremendous ambassador for the Mareeba community.

“Oliver was chosen for this scholarship because of his academic and community achievements,” Mr Teitzel said.

“He is very deserving of this scholarship and will be a fine ambassador for the Mareeba community.”

The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Scholarship is part of the annual Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program.

KATE Reddecliffe celebrated her 104th birthday yesterday at the Garden Settlement aged care facility in Mareeba.

Along with fellow residents (including 103 year old Daisy Archer), Kate enjoyed some cake and reflection time with others.

A devout Brisbane Broncos supporter, Kate’s passion for life is well renowned within the local area.

After a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’, residents enjoyed a tap dancing performance from Pauline Heaton, who has performed for several decades.

Originally from the West Midlands in England, Mrs Heaton relocated to Australia for the warmer weather and has never looked back.

Mrs Heaton said she enjoyed visiting the residents and performing her routine, as she believed it really brought a smile to their faces.

Soroptimist International Tropical Tablelands celebrated International Women’s Day on Sunday morning by having a breakfast at Foxwell Park.

We had two young Rotary Exchange Students attending Atherton High School - Kristina Beese from Denmark and Ana Carvalho from Brazil, who talked to us.

They said their countries celebrate International Women’s Day and in Brazil, cake would be served for breakfast and danish pastries in Denmark, both with strong coffee.

Our guest speaker, Gillian Harrington, who was originally from the UK, gave us a very interesting insight into the history of the Malanda Theatre Company, particularly during the war years.

After last year’s Soroptimist International Tropical Tablelands’ successful Preloved Fashion event, we were about to donate cookware for the communal kitchen of Marylyn Mayo Lodge and invested in subscriptions of several magazines.

Reunited with the men who saved him

DIMBULAH was a fitting meeting place for Henk Ten Vaanholt, who was reunited with local paramedics who came to his aid two weeks ago.

Suffering a heart attack, Mr Ten Vaanholt’s heart arrested three times en route to Mareeba Hospital and a further three in hospital (meaning his heart stopped six times) before implanted emergency stents ultimately stabilised him.

or to his heart attack, but didn’t feel unwell.

“I did have a few chest pains from time to time in the lead up, but I would take a few deep breaths and they would go away,” he said.

“On the morning of the incident, I rang my friend Susan at 6.10am and I was sitting down when she came in.

“Susan took one look at me after entering the room and dialled 000 straight away.”

Shortly after the call, Dimbulah paramedic Adrian Church was on the scene. He said Mr Ten Vaanholt was

sweating profusely and had several other heart attack symptoms.

“Hank was simply pouring with sweat,” he said. “I would literally wipe it all off and it would immediately resurface.

“I immediately called Gav (Gavin Rablin, Mareeba paramedic) and both himself and their crew got here quick.”

Similar to a case covered by The Express last November, an artery clot busting drug called Tenecteplase was used to help improve Mr Ten Vaanholt’s state.

Cetinic family thankful for help of strangers after accident

MARINA Cetinic and her family would like to say thank you to several people who helped her recover from a nasty accident at Emerald Creek Falls recently.

While jogging with her friend Allie Gigliotti, Marina slipped on a wet rock, which resulted in a scary set of circumstances.

“I was running along the track (at Emerald Creek) and there were two rocks, with water running about half a meter in between,” she said.

“Allie jumped across successfully, but a bit of water may have wet the rock in the process. As I jumped across, my leg slipped in the water and Allie went to grab me to safety.

“I was then taken along by the rapid for 20 meters, where I became knocked out after bumping my head on another rock.

“From all accounts, I became airborne during the water at certain stages and landed on a rock further along, where I woke up.

“I heard Allie screaming for help, I had a pretty big gash, along with a bunch of tourists filming me on their phones instead of trying to help.”

Thankfully for the girls, Robert Gutchen was nearby and came to Marina’s aid. He ripped his shirt and used the material to cover and compress Marina’s blood wounds.

Marina was winched and subsequently air lifted to Cairns Base Hospital, where she received a series of xrays and stitches.

Since returning home, the Year 12 St Stephen’s student has been doing her best to study, while waiting for the stitches to come out.

Marina and the entire Cetinic family want to express their extreme gratitude for the effort and support from Mr Robert Gutchen, Allie Gigliotti, Mareeba fire and paramedic personnel, along with staff from the Cairns Base Hospital and the rescue helicopter, which were used to help get Marina to safety.

Cultural balance a must I am writing as a very concerned resident regarding the possibility of the APA Theatre being demolished to make way for a car park.

It is appalling enough that we may lose the only live theatre in the Tablelands, but it would also mean the loss also of a very significant part of Atherton’s history with the building, being a WW2 Igloo.

All communities (and in particular regional towns) must have an equal balance of business, cultural and sporting facilities. If we lose the theatre, it will leave a major gap

in this balance.

I am writing in particular, for the younger generation. Not all children are into sport and it is these children that are most at risk for not having a suitable outlet for their energies and interests. Presently the Youth Theatre is very active and well attended by children in all age groups. It builds confidence and self esteem in children that might otherwise get into trouble due to lack of facilities.

I do not have any special connection with the youth of the theatre - no grandchildren in the Tablelands; and I am 78 years old,

but having attended the theatre and witnessed the pleasure the APA performances give their audiences and especially the children’s participation, I can only hope that common sense prevails in this very controversial subject.

Please support the APA in their endeavours to preserve this very special and unique part of Atherton’s history.

Theatre is an icon It is with great sadness that I feel the need to contact you with the plight of the Atherton Performing Arts building at Silo Road, Atherton, North Queensland.

Once again it appears to be the little man against the wealthy developer. Only, in this case, the mighty developer is trying to pull the wool over an entire community.

Yes, Tableland Investments (owners of the Silo Shopping Centre, Atherton) are doing their level best to convince Tablelands Regional Council that the World War II Igloo, home to the Atherton Performing Arts for around 33 years, be demolished for 100 car parking bays.

The theatre is an icon in the entire district that just so happens to be in a perfectly central area for all and sundrie, bringing much happiness, culture and learning to the entire region. And is a non-profit organisation.

Tableland Investments wants – you heard it here, a car park.

A few points of interest: • No building is given approval to go ahead, in any way, shape or form if sufficient car parking has not been catered for.

• As an iconic building in the vicinity both council and developers should have had foresight enough to consider the community’s requirements, and designed and built to incorporate and enhance the total area, right from the start.

• Any Councillor, irrelevant of being involved past or present, who holds any conflict of interest in this matter, should be asked to step aside when voting, on relevant issues pertaining to this matter.

• The APA building is a World War II heritage building. Rocky Creek Igloo is being salvaged, so why the lack of support for the APA Igloo, which is in far better condition and gainfully employed by the community at large.

• The Atherton Performing Arts (APA) is the only stand-alone theatre on the Tablelands. It has seen international artists on its stage, who have been enthralled by its atmosphere and the commitment of the volunteers running the theatre.

We need to save our Silo Road theatre and make the developers realise that there comes a time when it is wise to withdraw gracefully; and that the mighty dollar they

are forever chasing is not the be all and end all.

Why remove an asset?

With reference to the Car park expansion proposal for Atherton, The Express, February 25, 2015.

It is difficult to see the need to remove a historic, much loved, theatre for more car parking at the Silo Central Shopping Precinct.

Even though the parking has been improved at the alternate shopping centre, it still does not measure up to the level and spacious parking at Silo Central. With the generous number of ordinary parking bays, and disability and pram bays that are close to the centre, there is easily enough parking for all.

As a frequent shopper, I have observed that the disability parks are rarely near full, but quite often near empty. Bulldozing the APA Theatre would not provide better parking for those with disabilities as the APA area is further away from the ramp than are the present disability car parks.

One wonders how the developers would manufacture 100 more parking bays out of the theatre site; and why they would want so many bays in the first place, when there is already such a generous amount of parking. They might get 30 parks. Not a very good return, when you consider what the community would be losing in terms of culture, entertainment and selfdevelopment.

If the developers are in fact wanting many more bays because of a vision of a large expansion in the future, why don’t they incorporate underground parking in to their new building or build a double storey car park as they do in other parts of Australia? The validity of a big expansion project would have to be questionable however, when there are so many empty shops in Main Street, and Silo Central itself constantly has two empty shop spaces.

The developers need to reassess and look for other options, rather than demolish a precious asset that belongs to the community, not just of today but of the future.

The Mareeba United Football Club juniors kick off their assault on the 2015 competition this coming weekend at Endeavour Park, Cairns.

This is the Mareeba Bulls’ second year playing in the more competitive Cairns and District Junior Association competition.

New Club President Raymond Cater said: “Our first foray into the Cairns and District competition was highly successful. I think all teams made an outstanding contribution and helped strengthen the Cairns competition. “We hope to build on that in this coming year. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken up positions within the organisation including: coaches, managers, committee members and everyone who helps out at the

bar and canteen and also those who help keep the grounds in pristine condition.�

The MUFC is privileged this year to have excellent sponsors from the under six age group, right through to the premier division, which means that everyone will get great exposure right across the board.

Atherton Golf The weather has been a bit cruel this week with no wednesday or Thursday play. LOCAL talent Daley Tilse is preparing for the biggest competition of his career later this year, where he will represent Australia in the US. Daley shone in the recent Australian High School Rodeo finals, placing 1st in steer wrestling, 1st in calf roping, along with a 2nd place finish in the team roping and all-round cowboy categories.

He will head to Wyoming with his Australian teammates, who will be watched by several US colleges across the nation.

Should Tilse’s talent be recognised by a US college, he may be offered a college scholarship to further enhance his career.

Since his first appearance at the Mareeba Rodeo in 2013, Daley has spent countless hours practising several techniques across a variety of disciplines.

Last year’s festive period was especially busy for him, as he completed a series of rodeos in NSW, travelling in and out of towns, competing hard.

Daley said he is grateful for many things during his career so far, in particular being injury-free and enjoying his time on the rodeo circuit.

“I’ve been really lucky with injuries,” he said.

“Some of the major injuries in our sport are mainly shoulder and knee-based injuries.”

“Once you travel on the circuit for a while, everyone becomes like a big family. If I needed to go live down in NSW, there are plenty of places I could stay.”

Excited ahead of his trip to the US, Daley said he was focussed on doing a good job during the titles and would try to not over think things before each event.

INNISFAIL held off an inspired Mareeba Gladiators 22-20 during their reserve grade opener at Davies Park, last Saturday.

After a bright opening which saw them lead 12-0, the hosts were unable to hold off the visitors, who possessed exceptional speed down the wings.

Gladiators halfback Gordon Hunter was in the middle of everything. He played an exceptional role in creating opportunities, although some handling errors did cost his side.

Innisfail ace Liam Conomo was let off the leash from every scrum, with a designed set play yielding him solid gains every time.

When the Gladiators did get their hands on the football, they couldn’t control it and were made to pay for it.

Almost on the fence with a brutal angle, Marc Kelly was radar-like in his conversion, which energised his teammates thereafter.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Gladiators only had possession of the football for three minutes. In that time, they came within inches of an unlikely comeback.

Fullback Jack Hogan scrambled onto the football in the middle of the field and danced his way through a myriad of defenders, reducing the margin to two points.

However with time on their side, Innisfail utilised clock management techniques to perfection and saw the game out.

Despite the loss, Tonga Kose’s men will be able to take great heart from their spirited fightback, with the team looking ahead to Ivanhoes next weekend.

In the U/18’s, Innisfail had all the answers from start to finish in their 70-0 demolition of the Gladiators.

golf enthusiasts and first timers are encouraged to come and tee off at the Mareeba Golf Club, this Saturday.

The Mareeba RSL will be hosting an 18 hole, four ball Ambrose golf day at the Mareeba Golf Club on Saturday, March 21, and it’s all for charity.

As part of the commemorative celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of the ANZACS, all proceeds from the day will go to the Mareeba RSL’s newly formed Community Support Program (CSP).

Contributions to this program will assist with the creation of a soup kitchen at the back of the RSL and a delivery program aimed at supporting the under privileged in the community.

Club Captain Michael Blunt is looking forward the day and encourages all to come along and support this great charity.

“It’s a great charity and I hope everyone comes along to support it and have some fun as well,” he said.

First time golfer and Mareeba RSL Functions Manager Tracey O’Shea said she hopes the day raises more than $1000 for the CSP. Teams of four can nominate prior, or on the morning at 8am. Teams can be made up of men’s, ladies, mixed and even kids teams are welcome to come and have a hit.

Tee off is at 9am sharp and cost is only $25 per person; and includes golf and a free BBQ by the Mareeba RSL afterwards.

There is a first prize pool of $500, plus heaps of other great prizes on the day, such as: a prize for the nearest to pin, longest drive and strangest drive, plus novelty events like the ‘Happy Gilmore Hole’.

There will be raffles out on the course all day and will continue on after at the presentations at the clubhouse.

Gladiators humbled in season opener Gladiators players paid tribute to their friend, Tony ‘Sassman’ Schaaf, prior to last Saturday’s round one match.

INNISFAIL surged to a 38-12 victory over the Mareeba Gladiators at Davies Park last Saturday night, in a largely uninspiring affair.

In a game where handling errors reached epidemic-like levels, the visitors had too much class and experience when the game was on the line.

The Gladiators had large patches of solid endeavour, however whenever they built up enough momentum, they turned the ball over.

Both sides respectfully stood for a minute silence before kick-off, in a tribute to the late Tony “Sassman” Schaaf, who will always be loved by the local community.

Opening exchanges between both sides were scrappy at the best of times, with the home side benefiting from a series of penalties.

The Gladiators took advantage of their field position, with Villiami Koroi scoring a relatively straight forward try at the 12 minute mark of the first half.

Koroi was able to bustle his way through a group of players under the posts, with most of the Innisfail defence left looking at each other.

Repeating sets ensued for the hosts, however they weren’t able to put on enough scoreboard pressure when it counted.

Innisfail winger Bodean Tanner began to fire up and appeared to revel in the dynamic spread of the ball given to him by his teammates.

This dominance translated into the visitors bridging the gap, with Fred Kobara’s excellent game sense rewarded through a try.

Shockwaves went through the grandstand, when Gladiators hooker Apenisa Cakanasiga was assisted off the field through injury.

Youngsters like Jackson Peters noticed the significance of this; and he took his defensive output up several gears.

After briefly extending their lead, the Gladiators fell victims to an extraordinary purple patch from Innisfail, who finished the half with two unanswered tries and all the running.

With NRL veterans Rod Jensen and Ty Williams providing quality leadership to younger members of their squad, the visitors broke the game open after half time.

Further mistakes from the Gladiators spoiled any opportunity of a comeback, as the game began to peter out on the hour mark.

Exciting Innisfail fullback Luke Romano put on a clinic in the second half, with exceptional speed and ability to read the play under pressure.

The visitors piled on five second half tries, with the hosts unable to trouble the scoreboard attendant.

Fili Fate came to life during this point of the match, scoring two tries and was virtually unplayable against a tired defence.

Several Gladiators supporters decided enough was enough five minutes from full-time, pouring out of the exits and into the cloak of darkness.

Innisfail coach Ty Williams was pleased with the victory and said the current dynamic of the squad would hopefully see his

side well through 2015.

“It’s always nice to travel up to Mareeba and come back with two points,” he said. “Even if the win was ugly at times.

“RJ and myself are in a really good situation as we can lead with experience; and we have a really unique and good team dynamic for the season.”

Before heading down to the rooms and enjoying victory, Williams made special mention of

Luke Romano’s performance.

“His performance was excellent tonight and his attitude has been really good, especially in training,” he said.

Gladiators coach David Grainer addressed the crowd post-game, saying that he appreciated their support.

Mareeba will have their first away match of 2015 this week, where they will take on Ivanhoes.
