Heartfelt search

FOUR years ago, John McFadden and his sisters had never heard of Mareeba, yet alone the Atherton Tablelands. Yet it was a quest to find a father he never knew, which ultimately lead him to Mareeba. A concerted family effort to find their missing father had appeared fruitless over several years, until Mr McFadden had a breakthrough while searching online in 2010.

“My father (Harold Seymour McFadden) disappeared from our family during the 1950’s, after both divorce and WWII,” he said. “Via the Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages website, I was shocked to discover that he had died in Mareeba. “The death certificate indicated that he was buried in the Mareeba Cemetery on November 3, 1960; with this information being supplied to Mareeba police by an informant. “Up until four years ago, I had never heard of

Mareeba. On finding its location, I asked myself: Why did he go to Mareeba? “I now believe this was because of his association with US army small ships in WWII; as Cairns was the last port of call for small Australian and New Zealand vessels before they left Australian waters, serving larger US war ships in the Pacific Islands.” Once processing this information, Mr McFadden said his next decision was to locate his father’s gravestone.

Needing assistance and understanding his situation, several members of the FNQ community did their best to help him. Anna Parisotto (from Mareeba Shire Council) got the ball rolling, locating Harold’s gravesite number, along with an aerial picture of the general vicinity of the gravesite. After solid research, Mr McFadden and his wife travelled from Canberra to Mareeba by car. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
