TRC hands down budget

There were no surprises in Tablelands Regional Council’s budget when it was handed down last week, with councillors and officers sticking to their word and freezing this financial year’s rates revenue in order to address the errors.

An overall increase of 6 per cent forms part of a plan to average out the rates over a two year period from this and the last financial years in order to redress the mistakes made in the 201718 rating calculations.

Mayor Joe Paronella said the budget is “the start of the next chapter for council and the community” and stated that council had worked hard to address the mistakes that were made.

“Part of this process is to place a freeze on total general rates revenue for 2018-19,” he said.

“And cap Category F and G rates so no ratepayer will have an increase greater than 15 per cent.

“Rates redistributions in 2018-19 will resolve the errors from 2017-18 where some ratepayers paid more than intended and some ratepayers paid less than intended.”

But the mood around the table was sombre as the councillors each expressed “mixed feelings” about endorsing a budget that showed a forecast deficit of $2.9million.

“I believe we have done the best we can, within the parameters we find ourselves,” said Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick.

“But, to my mind, we still have a considerable way to go before I can claim contentment with our position.

“This is why I am supporting this budget on the premise that we as a council consistently and conscientiously monitor our performance and continually refine and improve our position over the months ahead. This will include strategic reviews on our assets, roads, water and general efficiencies to name just a few areas of focus.”

Christmas has come early for Mareeba businesses with the CBD buzzing with Grey Nomads that have made their annual pilgrimage north for their usual mid-winter celebrations.

The event, which is hosted by the Far North Nomads Chapter of the Campervan and Motorhome Club (CMCA) of Australia and supported by Mareeba Shire Council, is in its 21st year and offers visitors a variety of fun and interesting events.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said he is thrilled that the sun-seekers chose to make Mareeba home for a while as part of their travels.

“As the Mayor I am thrilled to bits that people come and stay here and then they go on the road and tell people to come and stay here as well,” he said.

“We get the continuing economic development. They buy fuel, buy food, they bring an enormous amount of economic activity to the town.”

The rise in cleaner living has meant one Mareeba business has boomed in recent years prompting a move to larger premises this week.

Essence of Organics has been based on Walsh Street for 13 years but as of Monday is now known as the Wholefood Supermarket. Now situated at 303 Byrnes Street, the business has undergone a massive transformation and will soon be incorporating a wholefood cafe and treatment rooms such as massage, reiki and acupuncture.

Managing Director Michelle Eugster said she had been looking to expand for the past five years.

“I think we’ve seen a growth because our prices are so competitive,” she said.

“Our quality is so much better than what you’d get elsewhere.

It’s fresh so it lasts longer for the customer so that’s really brought people in and seeing that we aren’t three times or twice more expensive – in fact some things are cheaper than what you get in the other supermarkets.

“It’s the family feel but with that more supermarket style.”

The Wholefood Supermarket will offer the same range of foods and products that were available at the old shop, but with a bigger variety.

The largely locally-grown selection of food is also mostly organic, chemical free, spray free, toxic free, nitrate free and sugar free.

It’s a way of living that is becoming more and more popular.

The supermarket officially opened for business on Monday with the cafe and treatment rooms to follow soon.

Freeze on rates revenue From P1

Councillor Kate Eden said it was an uncomfortable position to be in.

“The long term forecast is for an operating deficit of between $2.4m and $500,000 for the next five years until we get our heads above water,” she said.“This is not a happy position to be in but should not come as a surprise considering we’re still recovering from getting ripped off through de-amalgamation.”

The mood was reflected on the street as a group of ratepayers once again used vehicle signs to communicate their intention to keep the pressure on council.

“There’s concerns still about council’s behaviour and the way they’re going,” said Lyn O’Connor a member of the Rate Payers Action Group.

“I believe that it’s a reminder to council that people are concerned and that they’re watching and have high expectations of council now in the recovery.”

Mrs O’Connor said there was apprehension from rate payers in anticipation of their rates notices after last year’s steep hikes and

the calculations bungle.

“There’s a lot of concern until people receive their rates notices. There are rural landholders that have got their 15 per cent cap last year and are facing another 15 per cent increase this year. That’s still steep so there’s concern.”

Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick urged rate payers to contact councillors if they had any issues with their rates notices.

“May I stress how important I think it is for TRC rate payers to pick up the phone or come and see us to check how the Rates Rectification Strategy is going to affect you in the hip pocket as,” she said. “Although we have frozen the general rates revenue as a whole and ensured that on average over the two year period 17/18 and 18/19 that general rates (not including fees and charges) will be increasing, on average 3 per cent per annum, this will look very different for each ratepayer and across all rating categories.”

Cr Mellick also spoke about taking some of the issues with the budget to the Northern Alliance of Councils meeting at the

end of August to get the LGAQ to lobby the State to review this system.

“In relation to our Category F and G ratepayers; I believe we have left no stone unturned in looking at how we can best minimise the effect of valuations on the rates,” she said.

“As I have said before; I truly believe that the State legislated system is a blunt instrument especially for cases that fall outside of the norm; but it is the system we have – and no one has come up with a better one.”

Councillor Anthony Ball echoed the other councillors when he spoke about the essential need of the council to minimise its spending.

“We’ve got to look at our service levels, we’ve got to look at what our community wants, what our needs are,” he said.

“So there’s a lot riding on the next 12 months. If our community is tightening their belts, we’ve got to tighten our belts as well.”

Councillors also spoke about creating an ‘enterprise entity’ to bring more money into council’s coffers and relieve the pressure on rate payers.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella handed down the 2018-19 budget at last week’s council meeting.

Water and roads priorities Pot holes in the roads and boil water notices – two of probably the biggest gripes from ratepayers living in the southern Tablelands and yet roads and water infrastructure sit at the top of council’s list of capital works expenditure for the year. $11.9million will be spent fixing up the roads in the shire over the next 12 months making it the biggest outlay of money for the council by far.

Second on the list is water and waste-water infrastructure

totalling $8.9million in capital works – $5.6million of which will be spent upgrading the Herberton water supply.

“Our 450km of ageing water pipes and infrastructure continue to challenge our resources,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“The development of a region-wide Water Infrastructure Strategy will ensure our water-future is well planned and financed and that further investment is cost effective and targeted to improve water qual-

ity, reliability and security.”

The upgrade of the Ravenshoe sewerage treatment plant will also be complete as part of this year’s budget expenditure.

But Division 2 councillor Annette Haydon who represents the people of Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe had little to say about the overall budget.

“Budget’s are good for some, not for others,” she said. “Small outlying communities miss out year after year. Sometimes outlying areas are not all about roads.”

Weed spraying to go ahead at Tinaroo

SunWater will undertake aerial herbicide spraying of water hyacinth by helicopter at Lake Tinaroo over the coming weeks in cooperation with Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and Biosecurity Queensland (BQ).

The operation will occur on the western side of Lake Tinaroo up to Tobacco Hill in stages between August 3 and September 3, weather permitting.

Herbicide will be applied to the weed mat surface only and SunWater is asking residents to avoid contact with water hyacinth in the targeted areas during the notified spray period.

There are no forecast risks to aquatic life or water quality and Lake Tinaroo will remain open and accessible throughout the operation via northern entrances.

SunWater Executive General Manager – Operations Colin Bendall said aerial spraying was the most effective way to access and treat the outbreak quickly.

“Water hyacinth is a floating water weed introduced from South America and is a major pest of creeks, rivers and dams,” Mr Bendall said.

“Untreated, it can choke wetlands and waterways, kill native wildlife and interfere with recreational use. Water hyacinth depletes waterways of

Tracy Townsend and Bronwyn Price are taking on the epic adventure of climbing to Mount Everest Base Camp in October to raise money for Dementia Australia.

Hiking with heart

Mareeba businesswoman Bronwyn Price and her sister Tracy Townsend are about to embark on the biggest challenge of their lives - hiking half way up Mount Everest.

The pair have spent the last three months training for the epic adventure in October for one really good reason - their mum.

Lorraine Townsend was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago when she was 70.

“We’ve lost our mum,” said Tracy.

“We’ve got a second mum so that’s been a big adjustment for us to go through. The mum we grew up with and know, she’s gone.

“It’s a bit of a bizarre situation in a way because she’s not died, she’s still here.

“You do still get glimpses of her but she doesn’t really know we’re her daughters anymore.”

Bronwyn and Tracy have

seen first hand what this debilitating disease can do to a person and their family and want desperately to try and raise awareness and money to help in any way they can.

When Dementia Australia announced they were organising a fundraising hike to the Base Camp of Mount Everest, they jumped at the opportunity. Well, Tracy did.

“I didn’t send it to Tracy because I knew if I did she would want to do it and then I would have to,” laughed Bronwyn.

Tracy is the older adventurous sister who was already reasonably fit as an avid runner.

Bronwyn, on the other hand, was juggling kids and a business and did not think that training for a major hike 5,600m above sea level was going to be part of her immediate future.

Despite that, ironically, a trek to Everest Base Camp was always on both girls’ bucket lists.

“You can save money and do what you can yourself, but something like this can give exposure

to the disease and we just know so many people who are going through it,” said Bronwyn.

“But I still have moments where I don’t know if I can do it.

It’s full on.”

The sisters have tackled every mountain in the region to gain some experience of hiking uphill.

Bronwyn said she is having to put in extra effort to catch up to Tracy’s level of fitness, which for her means exercising before work, at lunch and after work.

They’ve also just been taken under the wing of Scott Payne from Cairns Altitude Training.

Even though it is only the Everest Base Camp, the air will still thin out and the girls will need to learn to utilise the little available oxygen whilst continuing to walk for six hours a day. Altitude sickness is very common.

They’ll be carrying around 10kg of weight for the 11 days which will include food, water and emergency gear in case of a storm.

It is literally no walk in the

park and people have been known to die doing the exact same trek.

“I’m scared we won’t make it, I’m scared we won’t make it for mum even though we’ve done all the fundraising,” said Tracy.

“I want to get there. I want to do that for mum and I want to do it for us because we’re putting in a lot of work.”

It’s not just physically exhausting and dangerous, but will also be a real test of mental strength too.

“It’s scary because it’s so different to anything we’ve ever done,” said Bronwyn.

“But if we’re ever going to be able to help make a change, this is how we’re going to help.”

The girls are hoping to raise $5000 for Dementia Australia, a national charity for people living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers and represent the 413,106 Australians living with dementia.

Local irrigators encouraged to participate in water needs survey Customers of the Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Area (MDIA) are urged to participate in a water needs survey for the proposed Nullinga Dam to help paint a clear picture of long-term water sustainability for agriculture.

Building Queensland is partnering with water provider Sunwater to assess the economic viability of the proposed dam on the Walsh River, about 55km southwest of Cairns, and is currently seeking data from users under a Request for Information (RFI).

The proposed dam could provide up to 88,000 megalitres of medium priority water.

Joe Moro, chair of FNQ Growers whose members com-

prise a large number of MDIA customers, said the RFI provided an important opportunity for all existing and future MDIA users to provide data for the future water needs of the region.

“Growers of all commodities that use water from the MDIA are encouraged to provide information about their potential future water needs,” Mr Moro said.

“I would be encouraging all growers to use this opportunity to review their individual operations and determine what, if any, future water needs they may have.”

The RFI seeks data on intended water use, potential price point, water quality, indicative time for water uptake and pre-

ferred water priority and supply approach, for new and existing users.

Mr Moro said while the detailed information was being sought primarily to assess water requirements from Nullinga Dam, data of this nature could be used to help assess the feasibility of other future water infrastructure including the North Johnstone River diversion and modernisation of the MDIA scheme.

“The development of a detailed business case is a significant step towards securing future water supplies for the growth of agriculture on the Tablelands and the horticultural industry is pleased that there is movement on this issue,” Mr Moro said.

“However, as we have stated before, we believe that the proposed dam is part of a threepoint water strategy to guarantee future growth and sustainability.

“Therefore this data collection presents a critical opportunity which will hopefully paint a clear picture of what is needed to deliver long-term water sustainability for agriculture in the region.”

Attention Atherton ratepayers – it seems you no longer have to pay your rates!

Just state that you have been told verbally that it’s ok for you not to pay your rates.

Obviously, this is not true and in fact ludicrous.

Yet a similar thing seems to be happening currently in Atherton. A business started in May whilst waiting for DA approval.

The reason: they claim to have been told verbally by the council that this is ok.

This is actually illegal and the business could be liable for a fine of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The council is not yet due to approve the application until their next meeting.

It seems the TRC is not going to even deliver a slap on the wrist.

Christine Doan has been pilloried trying to create a level playing field for all businesses and for trying to get the Council to stick to their own town plan.

Talk about attacking the messenger – The Tablelander seems to have conveniently overlooked the illegality of the business in question opening and running months prior to the possibility of getting a DA approval.

At a time of crippling drought when farmers are stressed to the max. those thoughtless, overpaid city people in Brisbane living between coffees and the gym have come up with yet another way to tax the people on the land.

The only way to combat this rubbish is to get together and tell them NO... IT IS NOT YOUR RAIN and we will not cooperate! Farmers need to form ‘a giant water holding company’ and when the rain happens to land in your dams charge the Government for storage. Do it now do not wait...the majority of town folk are on your side as we can see that this decision is complete and utter rubbish. This is

just the beginning of something bigger and is pushing farm and station people to the brink, there have been too many suicides on the land.

Australia’s economy is sinking fast Is the Prime Minister living a lie when he keeps telling the Australian public that economic growth is going ‘gang busters’ and that thousands of jobs are being created monthly?

Statistics tell us another story. If one has a part time job for only a couple of hours a week, you are counted as being employed, little wonder the job figures quoted look good.

These part time workers are desperately trying to find other gainful employment in order to make ends meet. No real wage increases for the middle to lower income workers for a number of years now has cut spending power drastically. People haven’t the money, hence businesses are hurting.

One only has to travel from town to town throughout the country and witness shop after shop closed because businesses can’t survive in todays economic climate. The recent closure of the Mareeba RSL Club is just another example. The club president stating that all businesses are doing it tough.

Entrepreneur and proud Australian Dick Smith has had to close his food business due to the unrelenting competition from a giant supermarket chain.

Dick has given us all a real and serious warning that the current economic direction for this country will destroy Australia as we know it. The end result will be a lot more poor people.

Just as Stalinist communism destroyed the Eastern block countries in Europe, ultra capitalism will destroy the western world as we know it.

All the sugar coating done by our politicians isn’t going to improve an economy that is currently akin to a town sewerage pit and we’re sinking in it.

Massive thanks to Herberton Police

Shane Knuth, the State Member for Hill and myself recently held a community meeting in Herberton.

Several of the people that attended the meeting raised the issue of youth crime.

But those present at this meeting spoke very highly of the officers currently serving at the Herberton Police Station, notably the progress that has been made by them in fighting youth crime. All those that attended agreed that the crime in the town is at an unprecedented level.

I have written officially to the Police Station and wanted to share this praise publically to convey the message of gratitude that was strongly delivered from the Herberton community.

Walkamin people win landmark case

A Landmark application to build an agricultural supplies store in Walkamin was knocked back last week by Tablelands Regional councillors.

Despite the officer’s recommendation to approve the development, councillors unanimously voted against the application siding with the town’s residents who objected to the business moving in so close to their homes.

“The locals have all said to me it’s not that they don’t want Landmark to come to town, they do, but they just don’t want this site,” said Councillor Owen Byrnes.

“Landmark is a great Aus-

tralian company and so many times in this shire we hear where people aren’t getting enough development, we aren’t creating enough industry and then we get this great company come and want to invest in our community and it’s great to see, but at the end of the day my job here is represent the people of Walkamin.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions around the subject and the Walkamin people have raised some concerns, a few quite legitimate ones that I can see.”

The application was inconsistent with the planning scheme for the area and therefore was recommended for approval by officers with conditions to limit the negative impact on the community.

“Logic says I am reluctant to go against the officer’s recommendation but at the same time I would be devastated if something like this moved in next door to me,” she said.

Instead Cr Eden put forward

an alternative motion that refused the application which will be endorsed at the next meeting.

The motion said that the application conflicts with a relevant instrument and that there are insufficient grounds for approving the application given the conflicts.

Walkamin to be investigated as potential agri-business centre The refusal of an application

by Landmark to go ahead with a new business venture in the township of Walkamin raised some questions for Tablelands Regional councillors about the viability of Walkamin as a future hub of agricultural businesses.

The councillors unanimously agreed that they were thrilled to

have a company like Landmark want to invest in their region and wanted to look at alternative viable options for the business within the area whilst simultaneously exploring Walkamin as a business hub for the future.

“I will be putting forward a request to work with the planning department to investigate

the feasibility of Walkamin as a rural industry support hub because Landmark has actually made a pretty sensible business decision here,” said Councillor Kate Eden. “Walkamin is a great central location to service the rural area and if there’s a suitable location that can be found for them that would be a great way

forward.”

“No one wants business beside their home, but how do we make our region prosper?” said Councillor Annette Haydon.

“I support the people of Walkamin and this development can change the rural village that they live in. I’d like to see something else on the table.”

Funding shows confidence in Mareeba shire TWO projects in Mareeba Shire have been shortlisted for a share of $70 million in the latest round of the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions (BoR) program.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council submitted an expression of interest to expand the already thriving Mareeba Industrial Park and the upgrade the sewerage pump station at Barang Street in Kuranda.

“The fact we have been shortlisted to apply for funding for these two projects is a vote of confidence from the Government in the progress of the Shire,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Past experiences prove that we are able to deliver projects of this magnitude and can see the benefits the BoR program generates through job creation, economic and social benefits.

“We thank the Queensland Government for this opportunity to apply in the latest round of the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program and we will certainly be proactive in lodging an application in the next stage of the process.”

Stage 3 of the Mareeba Industrial Park Development at Keegan Street Mareeba which will make available heavy industry-zoned industrial land for large-scale development of commercial and industrial agriculture services.

“The Mareeba Industrial Park

is exceeding our expectations and we are delighted about that.

Stage 3 is desperately needed to meet the demand that is escalating in response to increased agriculture production and value-added manufacturing in Far North Queensland,” Cr Gilmore said.

Councillor Gilmore said the Barang St pump station had not had sufficient capacity for some time. “The storage has to be increased to meet the current demand with additional capacity to meet future loading,” he said.

Council has committed to funding up to its portion of the project costs to increase the capacity of the pump station under the 2018/19 capital works program, subject to the approval of BoR funding.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the Mareeba Shire Council’s Barang Street Sewerage Pump Station Upgrade was much needed in Kuranda.

“There’s a growing population and plans for expanded tourism in the region, which makes this project very important to support Kuranda’s future growth,” Mr Crawford said.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said any of the 11 projects shortlisted from her electorate would deliver great benefits to their respective communities.

“I look forward to seeing many of these projects become a reality,” Ms Lui said.

History restored at Rocky Creek Men and women who served in the Second World War were remembered last week at the Rocky Creek Igloo, a building that was once the entertainment hub for one of Queensland’s most significant World War II military hospitals.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the military hospital at Rocky Creek, near Tolga, had been the largest in the Southern Hemi-

sphere and the restoration of the Igloo would highlight the Tablelands region’s rich wartime history.

“The restoration of the Rocky Creek Igloo, which hosted entertainment for thousands of staff and patients at the hospital, will preserve and commemorate this important piece of Australian history,” Dr McVeigh said.

“The investment in this restoration will also establish the Rocky Creek Igloo as a tourism

asset that will draw new visitors to the Tablelands, giving a boost to this region which played a significant part in the war.”

Patron of the project and Senator for Queensland James McGrath said the Igloo, one of six built on the Atherton Tablelands and the only one still standing, would be used as a military museum, entertainment centre and meeting venue now that facilities were complete.

“This Igloo is continuing to

serve our community, providing a venue for local events and a meeting place for military service organisations,” Senator McGrath said. “The revenue raised from the use of the reIgloo will go towards ensuring the ongoing sustainability of this fantastic community facility.”

The Igloo Restoration project was jointly funded with the Coalition Government investing $90,200 and Rotary Club of Atherton Inc. $95,474.

Second Lieutenant Andrew Kendel Duke was piloting P-38 Lightning (below) when he was killed near Biboohra.

World War II US flyer to be honoured at Biboohra Proceeds of the 2017 Mareeba Military Muster and donations from a number of organisations including relatives in the USA have gone towards a long overdue memorial to honour the tragic loss of US Flyer who was killed on the 9th August 1943, near Biboohra.

Second Lieutenant Andrew Kendel Duke was piloting P-38 Lightning Serial No 43-2200, that was attached to the 5th Air Force, 475 Fighter Group, 431st Fighter Squadron.

At 16.05hrs on the above date 2nd Lt Duke experienced engine trouble during flight over Mareeba during his flight from Amberley to New Guinea.

Due to this engine trouble Duke requested to land at Mareeba airfield but was advised to circle as the airstrip was being utilised at the time but to return to land shortly thereafter.

As Lt Duke circled, the aircraft experienced further serious engine difficulties and it quickly came apparent Duke was unable to land at the airfield. Duke decided to attempt a single engine landing north from Mareeba to Biboohra. The aircraft began to lose altitude, and tragically crashed near the small township of Biboohra.

Duke was killed instantly suffering horrific internal injuries and burns from the aircraft crash, and post explosion.

The Memorial will stand within the garden area of the Biboohra Cash Store and Service Station along the Mulligan Highway. An official service is also being planned for Saturday 2pm on August 11, 2018, 75 years after the tragic event, with

anyone wishing to attend.

Memorial Co-ordinator Michael Musumeci said; “Prior to the memorial Service, the plaque will be on display at the 2018 Mareeba Military Muster on the 4th and 5th August to show the community what their donations have contributed to. We are also very grateful for all of these donations as well as added contributions from Lt Duke’s family, the Mareeba RSL Sub branch and the Vietnam and Veterans Motorcycle Club who have all assisted in making this a reality”.

Without the support of the public to our musters we would never be able to remember and honour our rich Far North Queensland military history.

The history of Mareeba’s military history is something that should never be forgotten, and Mareeba played a vital and essential part during World War II. This memorial is a fitting tribute to honour Lt Andrew Kendel Duke, and needs to be not only highlighted to our visitors, but also to the younger generations, as he paid the ultimate sacrifice in such turbulent times.

Lt Duke’s Niece Elizabeth Duke Hellman said; “To honor Americans who gave their lives is a special kind of calling. Not many (anywhere in the entire world) would be as diligent, as hard-working, as generous, and as determined. That’s a gift that is especially rare. You do Australia proud.

“My grandparents, my father, and my aunt would have been intensely and eternally grateful for the privilege you are bestowing on Ken. They would never have imagined such an accolade. “

RSL defends closure of Mareeba club A representatrive of the state branch of the RSL released a statement last week in response to Bob Katter who “demanded answers” after a string of RSL club closures in his electorate, including Mareeba.

Mr Katter said he “holds grave suspicions about the closure of yet another RSL club, this time in Mareeba, and is determined to get to the bottom of it”.

“There are now five RSL clubs in the Kennedy electorate that have closed – Mareeba, Atherton, Tully, Mt Isa and Charters Towers.” he said.

“So what is going on here?

We need to ask for an Inquiry by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), the closure of five clubs is beyond the realm of comprehension.

“Is the only common thread

here; someone pushing the needle from Brisbane, perhaps?

“We want investigations and we want answers because these have been wonderful services to our community particularly Mareeba – it dominates the main street and is one of the major watering holes in town.”

But the response by Queensland RSL claimed that Mr Katter’s statement was incorrect.

“The media release issued

by Mr Bob Katter MP contained several factual errors and allegations, which RSL Queensland would like to correct,” it said.

“The Mareeba RSL Club has closed because it was not financially viable. The club was a separate commercial entity, which operated out of premises owned by the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch.

The Sub Branch provided rent

relief and other assistance over several years to help the Club trade out of its financial difficulties.

“RSL Queensland has no financial interest in the Mareeba RSL Club and did not influence the decision by Club members to close.

“The Mareeba RSL Sub Branch has not closed and will continue to support local veterans as it has for many years.

“The RSL Clubs in Atherton and Tully were also separate commercial entities, while the RSL Sub Branches in Mount Isa and Charters Towers operated their associated Clubs. In all cases, the Sub Branches have not closed and continue to carry out welfare activities supporting current and ex-service people in their local communities.”

Atherton RSL needed now more than ever

Despite last week’s closure of Mareeba’s RSL club, it’s not all doom and gloom for the organisation locally, particularly in Atherton where the sub-branch has just received a $359,000 grant to build its new club building.

Rob Moss from the Atherton sub-branch said RSL’s are in more demand than ever.

“They are needed more so now,” he said.

“With the younger veterans, they seem to be coming through wanting more support and someone to have a chat to.”

Atherton RSL’s sub-branch has been running since 1932, but in 2008 the club closed its doors leaving its welfare officers to make house calls to continue to provide the same level of support to its military veterans.

The new building is only in

the planning stages but when the club reopens its doors it will give those in need somewhere to go.

It has been funded by a Building Better Regions grant.

“It will mean more privacy for them, more confidentiality,” said Mr Moss of the new club that is being planned for a site on Railway Lane next to the Men’s Shed.

“The RSL here is very much alive and needed and respected for the work they do.”

The general public is officially invited to attend the Memorial Service to be held on Saturday the 11th of August, 2018 commencing at 2.00pm to honour and remember the life of Lt. Andrew Kendel Duke.

On the 9th of August 1943, Lt. Duke was piloting P-38 Lightning, Serial 43-2200 on a flight from Amberley to New Guinea. The Memorial Service will respectfully be conducted on the site of the Lt. Duke Memorial, located within the confines of the Biboohra Store / Servo gardens along the Mulligan Highway, corner of Bilwon Road, Biboohra.

The newly constructed Memorial is a permanent reminder to present and future generations, of the ultimate sacrifice that was made by Lt. Andrew Duke, and a significant historical icon within our region that will enshrine the memory of him.

Horse therapy to help at risk youths

A brand new service is being offered to at risk youths on the Tablelands that involves interaction with horses as a way of encouraging emotional engagement.

Horses Helping Humans uses body language techniques and horse whispering to empower struggling young people. It is a revolutionary approach to troubled kids that has taken off across Australia and is now available locally.

Sue Spence created the Horse Whispering Youth Charity program after struggling herself with ADHD, exercise addiction and acute anxiety. She was also diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy.

“I can’t even articulate how bad my anxiety got,” she said.

“Recovering from surgery, I wasn’t sleeping. I was really un-

well, but I reconnected with my love of horses and started training in natural horsemanship (aka horse whispering) and the impact on my anxiety was amazing.

“To work with a horse, you need to breathe and relax, change your body language … I thought it wasn’t fair that people who didn’t have horses weren’t being exposed to these amazing techniques, so I put together a workshop.”

Sue has over 40 years of equestrian experience and has specialised in natural horsemanship for the last 16 years. Now a horse whisperer, public speaker and author she teaches communication skills to corporate groups and underprivileged youth using the principles of natural horsemanship.

ing to trust them. When we have young domestic violence victims they are not used to being respected and the confidence this gives them is amazing. It’s very powerful.”

Wendy is now working with some of the local community groups to engage with disadvantaged and struggling young people through the techniques she has learned from Sue.

“In my own personal experience, I suffered depression at one part of my life,” said Wendy.

“I know how much the horses helped me and I want others to have the same opportunity I had.

“It’s a niche that’s not being fulfilled here so maybe I can give some hope.”

Mossman Mill set to change hands Far Northern Milling Pty Ltd announced today that it had entered into a conditional contract to buy Mossman Mill from Mackay Sugar Limited (“MSL”) When MSL announced last year that they would be selling Mossman Mill in order to focus on their Mackay assets the local growers realised that the only way to secure the future of the mill and their farming businesses was to pool their resources and find a way to acquire the mill.

The three Bargaining Agents representing the cane farmers Mossman CANEGROWERS, Tableland CANEGROWERS and Australian Cane Farmers Association have worked closely together to form Far Northern Milling which will buy the mill.

Maryann Salvetti, Chair of Tableland CANEGROWERS and a Director of Far Northern Milling saidL “A lot of work has to be done to meet the conditions required for the transaction to complete. However, the foundations are in place to buy the mill and secure the future for the growers, mill workers andthe township of Mossman.”

“The hardest and most critical part was to secure long term supply arrangements with growers and to raise funds from growers for the transaction” Mrs Salvetti said.

“We have sufficient commitment of tonnage to ensure the mill can remain viable. To be fair on growers we made contribution to costs optional but found the majority of growers prepared to contribute to costs and ownership in the new entity. In fact, many have said they would contribute more than was requested

from them”.

Chairman of Australian Cane Farmers Association and Director of Far Northern Milling, Don Murday, said that he was incredibly pleased with the outcome, “The situation has been fragile for some time. However when the Tableland growers confirmed their support to continue to supply cane to Mossman Mill we knew there was a pathway forward to keep the mill viable.”

Once the future of the mill is stabilised the plan is to create long term value by producing higher value products. Rajinder Singh from Tableland CANEGROWERS who is a Director of Far Northern Milling has been leading the value adding initiatives. He said, “We have significant spare land adjacent to the mill where we plan to create the “Daintree Bio Precinct”.

“This will be an area in which we can provide infrastructure and renewable energy solutions so that we can create low impact, high value adding processing facilities. Our initial focus is on green chemicals” Liza Giudice who is a Director of Far Northern Milling and Mossman CANEGROWERSs said she was excited about the prospects for younger growers in the area.

“The uncertainty about the future of the mill has meant that younger growers have been hesitant to invest in their businesses and some have considered leaving the area,” she said.

“If we can secure the future of the mill it will give younger growers the confidence to invest in the existing farms and also take on more area.”

Bright future for Ravenshoe

Ravenshoe has a bright and bustling future ahead of it thanks to a master plan undertaken by Tablelands Regional Council with the help of the local community and James Cook University students.

Councillors endorsed the Ravenshoe Town Master Plan at last week’s meeting which lays the pathway for future development and aims to attract more visitors, rejuvenate economic activity and provide a vision for a “vibrant and visible town centre”.

The plan was created with the help of planning students at James Cook University and involved listening to the locals via three community sessions held in the town earlier this year.

Councillor Annette Haydon was instrumental in the plan.

“This master plan was well received by Ravenshoe and will benefit Ravenshoe into the future,” she said.

“Not everyone likes what is in the master plan, but it is a way forward and allows the residents some ownership of what will happen in the future.”

The plan was delivered at a cost of $20,000, half of the expected cost.

Elements of the plan include a working steam train, a carriage museum/café, sculptures, upgrading public amenities and beautification of the town.

A swimming pool is also part of the plan which was previously knocked back by council with Cr Haydon saying it was “still a possibility”.

“The main thing is that we listened to the community and this will be a work in progress,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“This will be a long term project but we certainly know now where the good starting points are and we have some very achievable outcomes if we look at it properly.”

The plan now allows council to apply for funding to fulfil some of the ideas proposed.

Tablelands Regional Councillor Annette Haydon was instrumental in pushing for a brighter future for Ravenshoe.

“Like any master plan that goes out is always a concern that ratepayers always have plenty of comments about all the money we’re spending to get all these

wonderful things happening, so the initial outlay is always a concern,” said Councillor Owen Byrnes “But if you want to get fund-

ing and if you want private people to come and invest in your community and do things then these plans are a necessity so I think it’s a great step forward.

“The plan is a good base just to apply for all the funding. It helps investors and people in the community to work towards a common goal.”

The pipeline which will be replaced, runs under the footpath of the north-bound lane of Byrnes Street, from Rankin to

Lloyd Streets. Contractors will carry out the work in stages to keep disruption to a minimum, starting with preliminary works on Rankin Street, before progressing north along Byrnes Street.

“There will be disruptions to traffic flow which cannot be avoided,” Cr Gilmore said.

“As the contractors move along the street, some carparks will be closed and temporary detours will be in place. Motorists are strongly encouraged to slow down, drive to the changed traffic conditions and follow advice from traffic controllers. Council has liaised with business owners regarding the scope of works and

are asking motorists, and pedestrians to be patient while these critical works are carried out.”

The $2.5 million Mareeba CBD Water Trunk Main Upgrade is a joint initiative of Mareeba Shire Council and the Queensland Government. Project updates will be posted on Council’s website.

Mareeba CBD water main works to begin IN addition to the reseal of Byrnes Street in Mareeba being carried out by Transport and Main Roads, Council will commence critical infrastructure works to replace the CBD’s water main.

Work is scheduled to begin on the Byrnes Street water main upgrade on Monday 6 August 2018 and will be completed by the end

of the year.

Find the cheapest servo in town on your smartphone Queensland motorists will be able to find the cheapest fuel in town on their smartphone from December.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham today announced the government would kick off its two-year fuel price reporting trial in December.

“From December, Queenslanders will start to see price changes on their smartphones within 30 minutes of a price change at the bowser,” Dr Lynham said.

“The goal is for Queensland motorists to be able to identify the best deal, and use their buying power to support retailers who are do-

ing the right thing,” he said.

“This trial seeks to put the power into customer’s hands.

“Retailers will have three months’ grace to get their houses in order and by the Easter holidays, offenders will face fines if they do not report their fuel prices accurately and on time.”

The two-year trial will see fuel prices published on existing smartphone apps and websites such as Motormouth, GasBuddy, PetrolSpy, RACQ and Compare

the Market.

The trial comes on top of the what you see is what you pay laws that require retailers to display full prices, rather than conditionally discounted offers, on their fuel boards.

Dr Lynham said the system would have in-built safeguards against inaccurate or misleading pricing and not inflict unnecessary red tape.

The government will evaluate the trial’s performance in 2020.

Queensland drivers have named and shamed the Bruce Highway as Queensland’s worst road, with the results of RACQ’s Unroadworthy Roads Survey released today.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said this year’s survey attracted 1643 responses with more than 600 sub-standard roads nominated across Queensland.

“The Bruce Highway has been on RACQ’s priority list for years, and drivers agree, rating the highway Queensland’s most unroadworthy

road,” Ms Ross said.

“Motorists raised a number of issues along the 1600 kilometre route, from congestion in the south east, to flooding risks and rough surfaces in the central Queensland section.

“It’s encouraging however to see the number of problems identified on the Bruce Highway has dropped since the last time we undertook this survey – this is likely due to the significant $8.5 billion upgrade program rolled out since 2013.”

Ms Ross said the results

highlighted Queensland drivers’ main concerns and RACQ would use this feedback to inform its future infrastructure funding priorities.

“Sixty percent of respondents called out the condition of road surfaces and nearly half said narrow lanes or poor road shoulders were the main issues on local roads,” she said.

“We’ll be sending the results of this survey to State and Local Governments – Queensland drivers have spoken and now we need action.”

St Stephen’s soccer victory In its 40th anniversary year of the Bill Turner Cup the team from St Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba have returned triumphant after clinching a 1-nil golden goal in extra time against Townsville’s St Ignatius Park.

This marks the first time a team from Mareeba has made the final 16 of the competition which represents the cream of Australian under 15 school boys soccer players.

Under the watchful eyes of Coach Luciano Avolio and team coordinator Kieran Morley,

the team will now play in the Queensland finals on August 7 and 8 at AJ Kelly Park in Brisbane.

St Stephens will play the winner of Cavendish State High and Palm Beach Currumbin State High for the chance to play in the quarter finals, the last 8 of the competition.

The Bill Turner Cup for Boys was first contested in 1979 in the football state of Northern NSW and this year marks the 40th time the Cup Final will be contested.

Melbourne kicked off the Bill Turner Cup competition in the later stages of Term 1 and are now fast approaching the National Quarter Finals to decide the four contestants for the 40th Bill Turner Cup Finals Series.

Regarded as one of the largest sports team competitions in the world, Bill Turner School Football attracted 850 (450 boys and a further 400 girls – Bill Turner Trophy) school teams from Queensland, Northern NSW, NSW, ACT and Victoria.

Gladiators go down 46-0 to Brothers Mareeba Gladiators suffered a big loss on the weekend with a 46-0 slaughtering from Cairns Brothers.

Coach Matt Wakefield was gracious in defeat but said his side was suffering with only eight players turning up to training last Tuesday and training cancelled altogether on Thursday due to the caravanning convention taking place at the football grounds.

“They were too good,” said Wakefield of the Edmonton players.

“There’s a lot of variables in what’s happening at the moment. The lack of training has got something to do with it but there’s an overall lack of stabil-

ity. But we just have to deal with the cards that we’ve been dealt.

“There’s a core group of blokes that continue to show up each week and we’ll just keep pushing forward with them.”

This weekend the Gators will be back at Davies Park hopefully buoyed by the support of a home crowd as they take on Edmonton.

“Last time we saw them we flogged them,” said Wakefield.

“I wouldn’t say I was confident going into the game but we should give them a run for their money.”

Roosters back in winning form Centre Nigel Woodleigh bagged a hat-trick in the Atherton Roosters convincing 32-16 win over Kangaroos on Saturday night at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

After losses in their last two games, the Roosters were back in form on Saturday and wasted little time in signalling their intentions. Tries to centre Willem Foster and fullback Reece Munster gave the Roosters a 10-0 lead after only ten minutes of play. Both teams exchanged tries in the later stages of the first half and it was the Roosters leading 22-12 for the break.

Kangaroos did score first after the restart but that would be all from the visitors as the Roosters muscled up in defence determined not to leak any more points.

Roosters coach Graham Clark it was a very good team effort from his side in a tough contest.

“Everyone put their hand up and in the end it was a great result for us.” Clark said.

“We still have several players out injured and the young blokes we have been calling into the top side have been holding their own.”

The win also secures the Roosters a spot in the top three for the 2018 Cairns District

Bulls’ big 4-1 win at home A double to striker Steven Cater has helped the Mareeba Bulls return to the winners circle in an impressive 4-1 win at home on Saturday against the Innisfail Cutters.

The last time these two sides met back in round seven of the FNQ Premier league, the Cutters shocked the Bulls with a 7-3 trouncing, but the home side this time around was prepared to give their fans something to cheer about.

After a tense first half where a Calem Sorenson’s goal gave the Bulls a 1-1 draw at the break, the home side dominated the second stanza with Cater getting his double and youngster Jaydon Wells getting on the score card to round out the 4-1 scoreline.

The Bulls pushed hard and looked the better team with Dennis Allen and Jensen causing havoc down the left wing and two Dylan Cummings rockets blocked on their way to goal, but they could not find a breakthrough.

It was a similar case for the Bulls youth side, who looked the better side for the majority of the 90 minutes, but paid the price for not putting away their chances going down 3-2.

In an exciting youth match at high quality, with the two sides putting a show on for the fans, the young Bulls played some great football with Liam Pozzebon, Serg Battistan, Dylan Cappella and the two Osborne twins, Leyton and Brandon, playing well.

The Bulls’ ladies side enjoyed a 3-1 win, with Alyson Slyney opening the scoring inside the opening five minutes.

Jeannae Kalinau broke down the right to cross for Slyney at the

back post, then Kalinau got on the scorecard herself to give the homeside a 2-0 lead.

The goal of the game though went to Caitlin Townsend’s bullet midway through the second half, sending a rocket from twenty yards into the top corner of the net to give the homeside a 3-0 lead.

The Cutters got one back towards the end to finish the score 3-1, in what was one of the best team performances of the year by the always improving premier ladies outfit who are now starting to find their confidence under coach Bryan Schincariol.

On Friday night the Bulls 1st division and 2nd division boys fought hard in 2-1 and 3-2 wins respectively. An 87 minute penalty from Anthony Mete gave the 1st division boys the points against the Edge Hill Tigers, while a RJ Leporati 88th minute strike also gave the 2nd division boys a late win keeping both sides in second in their premiership race.
