On Tuesday September 11 Coles Mareeba introduced its low-sensory Quiet Hour experience to its supermarket to provide a more inclusive shopping environment for all customers.

Quiet Hour has now expanded to 41 stores throughout the state every Tuesday between 10:30-11:30am.

Quiet Hour promotes reduced noise, lighting and distractions instore, making it easier for customers who find it challenging to shop in a heightened sensory environment.

Coles State General Manager Jerry Farrell said Coles was rolling out Quiet Hour to more stores across the state based on overwhelmingly positive customer feedback.

“We’ve listened to our customers and have worked hard to make our stores more welcoming and responsive to the needs of the local communities in which we operate,” he said.

“We initially started with 14 Quiet Hour stores in Queensland, and we’re thrilled to be almost trebling this figure to make Quiet Hour more accessible for our customers and help make a difference to their shopping experience at Coles.”

In August 2017, Coles part-

nered with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) to trial Quiet Hour at two Victorian stores to support customers who are, or have family members, on the autism spectrum.

After a successful trial, Quiet Hour was initially rolled out to 70 supermarkets across the country. From tomorrow, 173 stores in Australia will now offer the low-sensory experience.

During Quiet Hour, customers will notice the following changes in participating Coles supermarkets: Lighting will be reduced throughout the store, Coles Radio will be switched off, Register and scanner volumes will be reduced to the lowest level, No trolley collections and roll cages will be removed from the shop floor, No PA announcements *excluding in case of emergencies, Free fruit will be offered at customer service, Additional team members will be available to support customers during the hour.

Mareeba Store Manager Andrew McIntosh said that the first Tuesday last week was quite good and will pick up as people know and find out about it. There has been quite a bit of interest from the Mareeba Community.

Grant win for local war heroes KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has thanked the Tablelands Regional Council and all the people who worked to secure a $20,000 grant under the Armistice Centenary Grants Program (ACGP).

The ACGP is for communitybased projects and activities that will commemorate the end of the First World War and pay tribute to our Australian servicemen and women.

“The amount of work that has to go into securing these grants is huge,” said Mr Katter.

Mr Katter’s great grandad’s brother died at Gallipoli and he’s always had a steely commitment to honouring the memory of our Aussie diggers.

“A nation that doesn’t honour

its soldiers is a nation that is not really a nation at all,” he said.

The grant will be used to fund the ‘Roads of Remembrance Project’. Themed signs will be created for roads and streets in the region that are named after people, places or events associated with WW1.

The council is looking for community assistance to help identify the roads that fit the criteria. The public can email communityengagement@trc.qld.gov. au or call 1300 362 242.

Tablelands Regional Council Acting Mayor Katrina Mellick said, “It will be great to honour, and have a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made by Australian men and women during this time.”

The Barron River Ramblers RV Club just donated $1000 to the Westpac Drought Relief fund.

Treasurer Grace Cole and Secretary Meg Leavis handed over the donation in Atherton last week.

The group meets monthly at a different venue with members from all over the Far North.

From one rural community to another, a group of Tableland residents have got together to raise money for struggling drought-stricken farmers.

Last month 25 locals from the Speewah, Koah and Kuranda area completed a traditional yearly walk from Speewah

campgrounds to the Red Beret Hotel.

Organiser Mick Dowling from Farmall in Speewah chose to use this year’s walk to raise money for struggling farmers and the group came away with $1195.

Incredibly, an Ingham business decided to match the effort dollar for dollar. Cameron Liddle from Liquaforce in Ingham donated 4000L of liquid cattle

feed supplement to the same cause.

The donations went to a rural supplied store in Goondiwindi in southern Queensland who located a worthy family.

“Marie Gerhardt sadly lost her husband to cancer last year and her daughter lost her leg in a farming accident,” said Mr Dowling.

“The drought was close to claiming over 400 head of her

cattle. This joint effort within a small community has helped her hold the farm together and save her cattle.”

Mr Dowling wanted to thank the businesses that helped to make the donation happen.

“Thank you to the Speewah Tavern, The Red Beret Hotel, Cairns Southside Stockfeed, Liquaforce, North West Rural Supplies and everyone who donated and participated,” he said.

Chillagoe residents that utilise the road that comes into the town are wondering where the funds that were allocated to the sealing of the road has gone.

In May this year the Australian Government had committed $1.8m, in two rounds, to seal a section of the Ootann Road within the Mareeba Shire and also committed $8m to seal two sections of the Burke Development Road this year between Almaden and Chillagoe through the Northern Australia Beef Roads Program.

At the time Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore said the dirt road was a hindrance to tourists who were unable to drive hire cars to Chillagoe to see the caves and other ventures in the area.

He said that if the road were to be fully sealed it would provide huge economic benefit to the town.

However locals have begun to ask questions as to why work has not yet begun as the project was due to be completed this year.

Cr Gilmore said that there are problems with the design of the project and he expected the road to now be completed next year, three years after the initial funding was approved.

A spokesperson from Transport and Main Roads said that the limited access to water is one of the main factors for postponing the start of construction until after the wet season. Sufficient water is essential to sealing a road.

“We are aware of the importance of the Burke Development Road (BDR) as a regional transport route, particularly for tourism and cattle,” he said.

“We are finalising the scope to progressively seal two sections of the BDR between Almaden and Chillagoe.

“Construction is expected to start in early 2019 with completion in December 2019.

“In the meantime, TMR will continue to work with Mareeba Shire Council, which maintains the BDR on TMR’s behalf, to ensure that unsealed sections of road are maintained regularly and in line with available funding.”

Fatal crash on Kennedy Hwy Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash in which two people have died on the Kennedy Highway at Davies Creek, near Mareeba on Thursday, September 13.

Initial information indicates just before 7.30am a semi-trailer

and a truck were involved in a collision on the highway.

As a result of the crash, the vehicles caught fire with the two drivers declared deceased at the scene. Forensic Crash Unit investigations continue into the incident.

Legendary Rats of Tobruk leave their mark on Tablelands

Council’s plans to boost business

Tablelands Regional Council is looking at implementing business strategies that will grow the region’s business community.

“We want to work collaboratively with the community and business groups to achieve the very best we can for our business community and flourishing economy,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We’re implementing a suite of initiatives — some new, some well established — to bolster our business community’s access to the latest information and opportunities.”

The Economic Development Fund is taking applications and is available to not-for-profit groups and businesses with a non-direct, profit-generating idea.

“We’ll fund projects up to $5000 that help grow our economy or promote our region as a destination to live, visit and invest in,” Cr Paronella said.

Applications close Friday, November 2.

Last week saw the launch of the first Business Seminar Series offering business development workshops and learning opportunities to local businesses and their staff. An outcome of this first forum was the development of a Smart City Leaders Group.

Members of this group will provide guidance on how to drive economic development through a smart, innovationdriven community.

“It’s an exciting time for business and growth on the Tablelands,” said Cr Paronella.

Renowned for their bravery and perseverance, the legendary Rats of Tobruk have left a lasting memento on the Atherton Tablelands, which has now been uncovered in Tinaroo Dam. The 120-kilogram mosaic hearth, emblazoned with a distinctive ‘T’ for Tobruk, was officially unveiled by 100-year-old Rat of Tobruk Henry Tranter at a ceremony on Saturday.

Community consultations on TRC water strategy

Tablelands Regional Council’s plagued water supply system will benefit from grant funding to find the most efficient and effective solution to the region’s water woes.

“It’s not the easiest system to manage,” said Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick.

“It is plagued by a plethora of legacy issues arising from merging and separating councils, a lack of strategic planning in the past and a lack of appropriate investment over time.

“Of course, reliable, quality water is this Council’s priority.”

Cr Mellick said the State Government had advised council on how to address the issues but that there had been little action to remedy the situation.

“At the moment we’re dealing with emergent issues on an ad-hoc basis and, as we all know, this is an inefficient investment in infrastructure and does not adequately address the risk to our water reliability and security,” she said.

“We need to be considered about how we improve and invest in our water infrastructure.”

Cr Mellick said council was looking for a long term solution.

“In April we endorsed the development of a region-wide Water Business Strategy and Infrastructure Development Plan and, after much advocacy on behalf of our community, recently

secured a $607,000 grant from the Queensland Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning’s (DSDMIP’s) Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program,” she said.

“The strategy will determine the most efficient and effective solution to improve the reliability of our water sources, and meet water quality requirements in accordance with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.”

The strategy will also look at optimising the water supply infrastructure to ensure potable water can be provided to the community at the lowest possible whole-of-life cost while meeting both current and future demands.

“We will be working with the community during the development of the strategy,” said Cr Mellick.

“Development of the strategy will commence immediately and is expected to take up to 18 months to complete.”

Data collection and a review of water infrastructure is already underway for the four Ravenshoe water supply schemes — Ravenshoe, Cassowary, Bellview and Millstream.

“Once online, these areas will receive a fully-treated water supply delivered by an optimised supply network, resulting in fewer boil water notices,”

said Cr Mellick.

“All things going well, the new water treatment plant will be completed and commissioned before the end of this financial year.

“Residents on this supply network will see a significant improvement in water reliability and quality.

“As a Council we are committed to improving the quality and reliability to the whole community.”

Cr Mellick said that while water quality hasn’t changed and the rules remain the same, they need to ensure that drinking water sits solidly within the guidelines and has a strong buffer against extreme rain events.

“This is not something we take lightly, nor will it be a quick fix,” she said.

“We are investing millions of dollars over the next several years into long term solutions.

Tablelands Regional Council will be holding community meetings to discuss the water strategy across the region and to answer the community’s water supply questions.

“More than 14,000 soldiers from the 9th Division of the Australian Army fought in the Tobruk Siege in 1941 during WWII,” Mr English said.

“They were accused of being ‘rats’ by the Germans. They took the name as a compliment and became known for fighting with bravery and grit under appalling conditions, often undertaking incredibly dangerous night patrols.

“They were instrumental in

helping the Allies maintain control of the City of Tobruk in Libya, which was one of two ports between Tripoli and Alexandria – a critical supply line for the Germans and Italians.”

The Rats of Tobruk were among 200,000 troops based on the Atherton Tablelands during WWII, retraining in jungle warfare before being redeployed to fight in New Guinea and Borneo.

Several army messes were built in the Danbulla/Kairi area to accommodate the troops, each

with a kitchen and cooking fireplace.

An unknown group of the Rats of Tobruk made the mosaic hearth for their fireplace, which was covered with water when the Tinaroo Dam was built in the 1950s.

The hearth has been identified as an item of national significance by the Australian War Memorial. It will be on display in the Malanda RSL and Citizen’s Memorial Club in a cabinet made by the local Men’s Shed.

A night to remember

Birdlife Northern Queensland Branch is hosting a presentation from Dr Cliff Frith on Bowerbirds, the group of birds that Cliff and his wife Dr Dawn Frith, have been studying for many decades.

Interested members of the public are welcome to attend and learn about the rich sex lives of bowerbirds and an expose of Sir David Attenborough’s involvement with inflatable sex dolls.

Branch Convenor, Peter Valentine, said that we are fortunate on the Atherton Tablelands to have so many talented members of the community who can share their work and perhaps inspire others.

There are twenty species of bowerbirds and all offer fascinating stories.

The presentation will be held at the Malanda Hotel on Friday the 21st September at 7.30 pm.

Botanic gardens tree removal Pruning and removal of old and dangerous trees in Cooktown’s Botanic Gardens will begin this month, after Council awarded the contract to a Far Northern business.

Council awarded the tender to Mossman-based MPDT Pty Ltd at the August meeting, and work is planned to begin next week.

The dangerous trees were identified in late 2017, with 119 trees earmarked for priority removal, 86 of which are in the fenced area of the Gardens. The remaining trees are in the wider Botanic Gardens precinct, around the car

park, amenities block, Nature’s PowerHouse and the oval. Remediation works, such as pruning, will also be conducted on other trees throughout the precinct. Species to be removed include mother of cocoa, mango, milky pine, bush plum, wattle, paperbark and other common species. Removed trees will all be replaced, although not necessarily in the exact same location.

“In the past year three large trees have fallen in the Gardens, and numerous large branches drop regularly,” Cook Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Linda

Cardew said. “This is a serious safety concern that we are pleased to be able to rectify quickly and with minimal impact to public access to the Gardens.”

Disruption to the Gardens will be kept to a minimum, with the works to be split into small sections to allow visitors to use the other areas of the Gardens during the project. Work is expected to be finalised during November.

My Health Record a Mareeba success

The Tablelands, along with the rest of the Far North, was one of the first places in the country to trial the My Health Records system back in 2015 and now it’s been rolled out through the region with good results.

The purpose of the trial was to test the implementation of the

opt-out model, and to increase participation in the system.

My Health Record is an online summary of your key health information.

When you have a My Health Record, your health information can be viewed securely online, from anywhere, at any time – even if you move or travel interstate. You can access your health information from any computer or device that’s connected to the

internet.

Whether you’re visiting a GP for a check-up, or in an emergency room following an accident and are unable to talk, healthcare providers involved in your care can access important health information, such as: allergies, medicines you are taking, medical conditions you have been diagnosed with and pathology test results like blood test which can help you get the right treatment.

The idea is that it is a convenient way to record and track your health information over time.

Amaroo Medical Practice owner and doctor Cheryl Harnischfeger says the system works well.

“We had a few technical glitches at the start but since then there have been no problems,” she said.

“With our mobile population, having a health summary with

their allergies and past history is very useful.”

But the system has come under fire by those who see problems with having such private information floating around online.

“We discussed it as a group with the recent concerns about privacy and hacking the general consensus is that it’s the older population that are more concerned,” said Mrs Harnischfeger.

“We felt that the benefits out-

weigh any risks and most people find it quite useful and are happy to participate. There have only been a handful of people that have chosen to opt out.”

The Mareeba Rodeo Association issued sashes and trophies to two passionate gardeners as winners of the Mareeba District Garden Awards.

Selfie Zhafer and Millie Bernardi were both inducted into the “Hall of Fame” for winning the same category three years in a row. Selfie who has lived on Blacks Road Mareeba all of her life spends unlimited hours in her garden and at the age of 86 is a true inspiration to all.

“The flowers make me happy,” she said.

“I’ve lived here since the 50’s and most of my time I spend in the garden”.

Millie Bernardi whose property on Yarrabee Close is picture perfect was also presented with her award for “New Home Garden”.

Millie said she spends around seven hours a week in her garden and when asked what her secret was she simply said “Lots of water and fertilizer”. “I teach during the week so the weekends keep me busy in the garden” Mayor Tom Gilmore and Kathryn Murray from Mareeba Garden Centre, who are major sponsors of the awards, were on hand to present the “Hall of Famers “with their awards.

A Lakeland pioneering farmer has won the 2018 Charlie Nastasi “Farmer of the Year Award” at the Mareeba and District Fruit and Vegetable Growers annual dinner last Friday night.

Peter Inderbitzin who arrived in Lakeland in the mid 1980s with a dream to develop the rich volcanic soils of the region into a profitable farming enterprise.

Faced with rising costs for good agricultural land on the Atherton Tablelands as a dairy farmer, Peter and his family purchased 872 acres at Lakeland two hours north of Mareeba.

Almost 40 years later the family has established themselves as one of the region’s most prominent banana farmers using compost as the lifeblood for their crops.

His success comes down to hard work and trying to make it happen in the areas harsh climate

where water is the most important resource.

Of his award Peters said “It’s good to know that our peers have recognised us for our efforts, it’s quite unbelievable, receiving this ward was much unexpected. “We’ve been through some tough times but have also had a lot of good time as well”. “You know that you have achieved something when your family wants to be involved and come on board with what you’re doing and continue the business”. “We have secured enough water to keep the property viable, however we still need more water to really open up and develop the areas as it has so much potential”.

“The soil is just as rich as the in the golden triangle in the southern tablelands and we are strong advocates for the building of the dam on the Mitchel River, it will bring untold wealth to the area.” he said.

Forsayth Gaol cell becomes tourist attraction Forsayth Police Station, est.

1912, is located on the Savannah Way, 40 kilometres south of Georgetown and 415 km west of Cairns. It is a remote community and home to approximately 90 people.

Forsayth Station covers some 10,000 square kilometres – that’s an area the size of Melbourne – and is predominantly home to large cattle stations, gold and agate fossicking areas and is the end of the line for The Savannahlander train, which visits Forsayth each Thursday, April to October.

Tourism during the cooler months sees the population of Forsayth swell with many tourists interested in the history of the area.

In 2014, Senior Constable Ian Carroll and his wife Kelly left the comfortable surroundings of Brisbane and headed for an adventure in the Far North, plan-

ning to call Forsayth home for the next two years.

Four years later Senior Constable Carroll and Kelly are embedded in the Forsayth community and the wider Etheridge Shire with no plans to move until retirement comes knocking.

Kelly works in the local school, with a student population of 10, while Senior Constable Carroll polices the vast Forsayth Division on his own, which will soon see up to 700 workers call Kidston home during the construction of a hydro-electricity and solar power facility.

Soon after arriving in Forsayth, Senior Constable Carroll formed the Forsayth Improvements Group which consists of like-minded locals interested in improving the town’s infrastructure.

improved park spaces, have had local long-term families recognised through local creek naming and new children’s play equipment installed.

In 2016, Senior Constable Carroll identified that the old Forsayth Gaol Cells were being damaged by termites and hatched a plan to use the cells as part of the improvements within the Forsayth township.

With the support of Inspector Rolf Straatemeier (Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector), Senior Constable Carroll had the Forsayth Gaol Cells gifted to the Etheridge Shire Council and over a period of 18 months, restored the cells and sourced photos and memorabilia to enhance the tourists experience and showcase the local cattle farming, mining and historical police service informa-

tion.

On September 2, the Old Forsayth Lockup was officially opened by Etheridge Shire Mayor Warren Devlin, with many locals and tourists attending.

The opening was supported by officers from the Western Sector and Assistant District OfficerFar Northern Region Superintendent Geoff Sheldon.

Minister vows urgent help for poisoned rivers

A mild mannered gentleman of Mareeba has just been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to the community.

Jim Blakeney, the former long standing President of the Mareeba Rodeo Association, was honoured on Saturday September 8 at the Pullman Reef Hotel in Cairns by His Excellency, the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland.

Accompanied by his family Jim accepted the award from the governor representing Her Majesty the Queen together with 12 other recipients from across the region.

Jim recollects his Council award for Senior citizen of the year in 2017 and while he was

very honoured to receive that accolade this is something that his grandkids will always remember.

“I accepted this award on Saturday, but it wasn’t just for me, I collected it for all the people that have helped me over the years, because without them I would not have been able to do the things they say it did.”

“I feel like I haven’t done this on my own”.

“We’ve known about it for some time but were unable to tell anyone until I received it last week” he said.

“My wife Shirley and the kids are more excited about it than I am, but it is a huge award and I would like to thank the person who nominated me”.

“We’re not going to be here

Brain injury support group cooks up a storm

A program in Atherton that helps people with brain injury support has got participants together for a cooking session in aid of Stroke Awareness Week.

The STEPS (Skills to Enable People and Communities) program organised and participated in a healthy snack workshop funded by the Stroke Foundation and held at Love-Lee Cooking,

Atherton on September 6.

STEPS Participants talked to the general public about stroke and brain injury, providing free information and goodies.

The workshop consisted of hands-on making of healthy snacks, such as bliss balls and chocolate crackle bars.

Queensland Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch has spoken out about the contamination of Walsh River tributaries by the nearby Baal Gammon mine.

In a statement to The Express the minister said that she had instructed the Director General to report back to her “urgently” with “proposed actions and timeframes for pursuing further enforcement measures against the mine operators.”

Contamination of the waterways around the Tablelands town of Watsonville became a hot topic again recently after an ABC report revealed that pollution from the old mine had turned the creeks into toxic contamination zones.

“Once again Labor has to clean up the LNP’s mess. Baal Gammon re-commenced operations in 2012 under the former Newman Government,” said Ms Enoch.

“I recognise that the Department of Environment and Science, as the regulator, has been undertaking ongoing work relating to issues of non-compliance

at the mine.

“My expectation is that the regulator will take all necessary steps to ensure the company is held to account for its actions.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said the State Government needs to put money provided to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection through financial assurance toward cleaning up contamination of the Walsh River tributaries.

“A $3.75 million financial assurance was paid back in 2012 when I first raised this issue,” Mr Knuth said.

“The Government needs to use that money to fix the problem.

“The State Government has almost shut down our agricultural industry claiming their main concern is the environment but now they are sitting on millions of dollars available to clean up a toxic contamination of our waterways.”

Mr Knuth said the community is frustrated with promises going all the way back to the Newman Government.

“Since then the site has been taken over by three different companies. All the Govern-

ment is doing is requesting more money and making profit for the department without actually stopping the contamination.

Mr Knuth said the State Government’s failure to act on a serious threat to a whole river system was ‘a kick in the guts to farmers and communities that rely on these waterways.’

Ms Enoch said locals had a right to expect that the regulator would take a quick and responsible action to protect our environment and ensure companies maintain compliance with regulations.

“This case demonstrates why the government’s mine rehabilitation reforms, which are currently before the Parliament, are so important,” she said.

“These reforms will ensure mine sites develop Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plans which will make it clear to the community what the rehabilitation requirements are for individual sites, and will include milestones with completion dates.

“These reforms represent the most significant upgrade to Queensland’s financial assurance and rehabilitation framework in almost 20 years.”

Another win for Record season of papaya local artists Cordula and Gerard Kath from Lecker Farming say they are excited to start picking this year’s papaya fruit harvest.

Excellent weather conditions and an increase in plantings have resulted in a record season for Australian papaya, with an abundance of fruit set to hit stores from September onwards.

The start of spring marks a key peak for the unique fruit, and thanks to a good dose of tropical sunshine there will be plenty of

sweet papaya available from all growing regions.

President of Papaya Australia and Mareeba (QLD) papaya grower, Gerard Kath is looking forward to seeing the bumper crop hit stores. “Each year production is growing to keep up with demand. We’re seeing existing growers expanding their

farms, as well as new growers starting up. This coupled with great weather has brought a record volume of fruit this season,” says Gerard. “Spring generally brings a harvest with high quality fruit and this year is no exception. We’re excited to start picking the new-season fruit, which will be available in stores from

the start of September.”

“Market prices are ok at the moment with yellow pawpaw fetching between $20 and $25 per carton while the Red Papaya is fetching about $12 to $15. We haven’t had any adverse weather conditions this year so the fruit is quite healthy and people can expect quality fruit in the stores.”

International artists coming to Dimbulah

Boosting Dimbulah and bringing some awesome entertainment to the town are two good reasons for a massive night of music happening in the small town west of Mareeba on November 11.

Festival of the Small Halls will see international and national music artists drop in on Dimbulah as part of a 21 night tour all over Queensland.

Canadian duo Madison Violet and Aussie artist Harry Jakamar-

ra will be sharing the stage with local performer Aurelle Brunjies at the Dimbulah Memorial Hall with all proceeds going to the Dimbulah Community Kindy.

There are limited tickets available to enjoy this one off night of music so get in quick because the performers are not to be missed.

Madison Violet, the Canadian duo described as pop, roots, indie, dance and Americana, have been whipping up a storm on the music scene over in their home country, while West Aussie Harry Jakamarra has been described

as having a punchy, Springsteenesque growl that’s imbued with the rugged texture of the West Australian desert where he grew up.

Tickets are expected to sell out very quickly as this is the only spot on the Tablelands to see these massive music artists perform. They’re available from the Dimbulah Community Centre on 4093 5444. Adults and children over 12 cost $25, pensioners are $15 and children under 12 get in for free. Doors open at 5pm with food and drink available.

Mareeba the largest district in the north In the latest statistical note from the Australian census the township of Mareeba is now officially the largest district town in far north Queensland outside Cairns.

In previous years the accolade had always gone to the coastal town of Innisfail south of Cairns but since 2016 Mareeba has pipped Innisfail by just under 500 residents for the honour.

It may well be our 300 sunny days a year that is attracting people to the town, the easy- golucky lifestyle or just the clean country air.

No matter what the reason it seems people find Mareeba a great place to live and do their business.

Mayor of Mareeba Shire Tom Gilmore said that the result is a testament to the town and the region; people are attracted to the

town for its diverse agriculture and climate. “ While the announcement has no economic significance it does send a clear message to state and federal government’s that we are a growing region and we do need more for roads, hospitals, infrastructure and Government facilities.

Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch was full of praise for his home town and said that as a local boy who grew up in the town, it give him much pride to know that his town has a very good future and that it is growing at the rate it is. “It’s proof that the town has an abundance of thing to offer those that choose to live there “he said.

Joe Moro, President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce said “It’s no surprise that Mareeba has earned the status as

the largest regional town outside Cairns.

The chamber works collaboratively with local organisations like the Mareeba Shire Council and Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre to strengthen our local economy and position Mareeba as a strong retail, industrial, tourism and agricultural centre.

We have the envious position of boasting 300 sunny days a year and, as the gateway to Cape York Peninsula, provide a wide range of goods and services that rival other centres across the region.

But while we enjoy the fastest population growth in Far North Queensland, it’s imperative that our public infrastructure including health services and road network, are maintained and upgraded to cater for this increase.”

Far North councils come together

A new and stronger key Far North Queensland political entity has emerged after the recent meeting of the Torres and Cape Indigenous Council Alliance in Cairns.

The meeting was attended by thirteen of the fourteen mayors representing Cape York and Torres Strait Councils and communities, including Cook Shire Council, Mornington Shire Council and Weipa Town Authority. The group heard from the Deputy Premier, Jackie Trad, that the Queensland Government will fund the Alliance with a grant of $140,000 for an initial one year.

Councils will match these funds and TCICA will engage a suitably qualified Executive Officer to provide administrative, operational, research and advocacy support to members.

TCICA spokesperson, Councilor Vonda Malone, Mayor of Torres Shire Council, said TCICA expected to enter into a formal funding agreement shortly with the State Govern-

ment.

Councilor Malone said a unified voice for often ignored communities would enhance the region’s ability to advocate and influence State and Federal policy in relation to the most critical issues, including the shortage of social housing and essential transport infrastructure.

“The new arrangements between our Alliance and the Queensland Government, and the resources which flow from that arrangement, will allow for our communities to better shape their own future.”

Councilor Malone said the existing arrangement, where each community has a Government champion, in the form of a Minister or Director General, has provided a unique and powerful opportunity to communicate issues, concerns and opportunities directly to the most senior levels of government.

“We’ve always welcomed the Government champions but a unified regional voice

will be more powerful than the disparate advocacy of separate champions,” she said. “Two of our first priorities will be landbased transport infrastructure and the urgent need for a local (Cape) tourism organisation.

“TCICA will also immediately write to the Premier and Deputy Premier expressing our strongest objections to any proposal to transfer township areas away from the control of relevant Councils.”

“However, our most desperate priority is to turn around the unacceptable housing circumstances of our peoples; poor, unhealthy, overcrowded housing is an everyday reality for most of our families and Governments have the absolute responsibility to work with us to change this.”

TCICA will also provide advice to its member communities regarding service delivery, infrastructure and economic development.

Following the great success at their recent roadshows held

in Kununurra, WA and Darwin and Katherine, NT Australian Mangoes hope to follow suit in Queensland with another stand out attendance in Mareeba.

They expect growers will be interested in hearing what their key industry stakeholders have in store for the upcoming season.

It will be a great opportunity to hear how retailers, wholesalers, exporters, growers, and service providers are collaborating

to create sustainable, profitable growth for the mango industry.

club news 2018 was the 13th year that our club held the Pink Ribbon Garden Party raising money for Cancer Council Australia – a big thank you to the businesses and individuals who donated the prizes for the event.

The day started and the scene was set for a fabulous afternoon. Our Lionesses manned the plants and cake stalls for the ladies and gents to purchase before the afternoons entertainment started. First up was the Atherton Hot Shot Band playing music we enjoy, then Ida Portella and members of the Mareeba Theatre Group entertained us with a skit before she officially opened our

1. Preheat oven to 190°C. 2. Sprinkle each chicken breast with salt and pepper.

3. In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 6-7 minutes, turning once. You want the chicken nice and browned on the outside. (It doesn’t have to be cooked all the way through yet.)

Set chicken on a plate and cover tightly with foil.

4. Remove skillet from heat and add the broth, lime juice, onion, cilantro, and red pepper. Return to heat. Cook and stir to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a boil. Allow to boil gently, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until the liquid is reduced to around 1/4 cup. Reduce heat to medium-low, then add the cream and butter. Stir until butter has melted.

5. Add chicken to the sauce and place the skillet in the preheated oven. Bake uncovered until the chicken is completely cooked through, about 5-10 minutes.

Serve chicken with sauce spooned on top and any of the listed optional garnishes.

Car club celebrates milestone

Fifty years of motor racing celebrated over the weekend by members of the Tableland Competition Car Club at Herberton’s Tepon Raceway.

FOUR hundred fundraisers will converge on Mareeba on Saturday, September 22 for their first morning tea break of the Mt Franklin Cardiac Challenge.

The fundraisers are comprised of 244 cyclists, 100 volunteers and other supporters.

Hosted for the 12th year by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, this year’s event is fundraising for an echocardiograph machine for the cardiology department of Cairns Hospital.

Foundation fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said the Mareeba morning tea was always a highlight due to the high standard of fruit and snacks provided.

“It’s actually something that we rave about and the cyclists always look forward to,” Ms Duncombe said.

Various far north Rotary clubs support the ride in terms of providing escort drivers, other volunteers and again this year there is a contingent of Rotary Youth Exchange students taking part.

The students are from Switzerland, Brazil, Finland, Germany and Belgium.

For the third time, the Foundation has obtained a one-lane closure of the Kuranda Range, enabling those cyclists who are willing and able, to ride the range in safety. The closure is from 6am-8.45am but Ms Duncombe

said any cyclists not off by 8am, would be removed.

“We’re really grateful for the motoring public’s understanding of this closure because they know the funds raised stay local and might even go to help a loved one or even themselves,” Ms Duncombe said.

This year the cyclists are stopping for their first coffee break at the Speewah Country Tavern, which is opening up especially for them.

The cyclists will then ride single file to Mareeba and once they have enjoyed their morning tea, break up into their packs to head away from the coast.

Learn to sail at Tinaroo Tinaroo Sailing Club is running a Learn to Sail Course on Lake Tinaroo on 22 and 23 September.

“You’ll learn the fundamental skills of sailing in a safe and supportive environment,” said Tinaroo Sailing Club Commodore Roger Wadley.

This weekend’s Tinarro Barra Bash is one of the biggest fishing competitions in the Far North and attracts keen competitors from across the region.

With around $40,000 in prize money and a top cash prize of $10,000 it’s not hard to see why.

The three day event kicks off on Friday with registrations opening at 2.30pm.

“Last year we had just on 700 nominations,” said Laurie Wright from the Tableland Fish Stocking Society which hosts the competition.

“This year with the dam level

being so much higher we think there’s going to be close to 1000 people entering.”

The comp has been running since 1990 and for the last two years has been a ‘release’ competition, meaning the fish will get put back in the dam after capture.

“They catch the fish, they measure it on the official measuring mat and then they put it back in,” said Mr Wright.

“And this year we have an app called Track My Fish app which we’ve never used before.

It goes back into a database straight away so we can track all of the results instantly.”

The family friendly event is

well supported by sponsors including the major sponsor Tableland Hardware.

“We’re very confident it will be a very big weekend,” said Mr Wright.

“Hopefully the weather will be good. Normally we would have it in November, but because of the moon with the fishing this was the ideal time and it starts to get warm in November for all of the families standing around.

“But the fishing is very red hot for the weekend.”

The Tinaroo Barra Bash will run for three days this weekend finishing with presentations of prizes at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.

Peninsular cricket champs showdown The 10-12 years Peninsula Regional Cricket Championships were held at Morrow Pk, Tolga from Sunday, September 2 to Tuesday, September 4.

Gladiators bow out The Mareeba Gladiators reserves season came to an end on Sunday when they were defeated by Southern Suburbs in the semi-final at Barlow Park.

A completely different match to the one they had three weeks ago where the Gladiators dominated the entire game and steamrolled Suburbs to progress to the next round.

Sunday’s game was a complete reversal with Suburbs outscoring the gators in the first half by 4 tries to 1 to take a commanding lead into the second half.

To the Gators credit, the second half was a much better display as they came home strong only to be pipped by 4 points in

the 34- 30 loss. The damage was done in the first half with silly mistakes and poor ball handling contributing to their downfall.

As the only tableland team to get this far in the finals, the gators should be proud of their achievements for the season and are well positioned with the current crop of players to give it a shake in 2019.

With another season over the club now looks to next season with the position of A-grade captain coach being up for grabs as Matt Wakefield moves on.

Mixed results for Atherton cricket

Atherton Cricket kicked off their season with mixed results in the new T20 format competition on Saturday to come home with a win and a loss. Cricket Far North made the decision to scrap the traditional 2-day games, in favour of T20 and 1-Day (limited 40 over) matches this season.

Atherton have lost some key players from last season’s victorious team with Gerard Fox, Pete Sceresini, Brendan Nasser working away and Luke Parnell unavailable. But welcomed new faces in the weekends line-up including Dylan Pettingill and Lachlan Hollitt and returning players Darcy Houlihan, Kobe Martin and Rhys Thomas.

The boys got away with a dominant first-up win over Barron River at Crathern Park scoring 155 and restricting the home team to 89. Captain Dan Parnell and Tom Boorman led the way with the bat to set a good platform. Dan and Tom looked in good form, notching up a 66 run partnership.

Dan top scored with 57 hitting 5 fours and 4 sixes, before being run out by a sharp bit of fielding. Tom cleared the boundary 5 times before being caught and bowled by the Barron captain on 53.

All of the eight bowlers contributed with tidy lines, and some energetic fielding including a great one-handed grab by Owen Daley and a couple of sharp runouts by Dan Parnell and Dylan Pettingill sealed the result.

The team made a quick run to Endeavour Park to take on Rovers in their 2nd match of the day without Tommy Boorman and Michael Salerno.

Rovers elected to bat first and Atherton’s bowlers executed well with openers Dylan Pettingill and Seppe Barletta both 1-17 off their allotted 4 overs. Owen Daley 2-6, Paul Nasser 2-12 and Dan Parnell 1-22 kept the pressure on the batsman to have Rovers 8-91.

Tableland tennis tournament The annual Mazda Mitsubishi tennis tournament took place at Mareeba Tennis Club on Saturday with players attending from all over the Tablelands.

Under-12s through to veterans took to the courts to match their skills with the junior event being a new addition to the tournament this year.

New Mareeba Tennis Club coach Herold Prins has built up the club’s juniors into strong competitors making them tough opponents on the courts.

The tournament was well supported by local players and continued its form of putting Mareeba Tennis Club on the map.

SAVE $15,085 ~ NOW $57,990 WINNERS: The Mareeba Bulls Under 13/14 Division 2 and Division 1 teams were both victorius on Saturday in the FNQ grand finals.

THREE teams, three finals, three wins – Mareeba United Football Club Juniors dominated the Cairns and District finals on Saturday taking home the trophies from three junior divisions.

For the first time CDJSA fielded an all-girls competition in which the Mareeba United Football Club created history by not only winning the premiership but also the Grand final in a classical display of unity and hard work.

Going down one goal to nil in the first half the young side rallied in the second half to score the crucial goal just minutes from the end of the second half to force extra time Chloe Taylor doing the honours.

The game changed however when Ashlyn La Rosa was brought down in the penalty box in the first period of extra time,

Amy Simonato stepped up and calmly slotted the ball high in the Rangers net to send the all the mums and dad’s in the stands into raptures in scenes reminiscent of senior games.

The game was all over in the second period of extra time when Madina Williamson slotted home to make the final score 3-1, Ashlyn La Rosa was named player of the final.

In the under thirteen/fourteen division 2 Grand Final the young Bulls side came up against the premiership winning Comets and displayed a calmness beyond their years as they outplayed their opponents when it mattered.

The Bulls took the game by the scruff it its neck early, as some sloppy defence was punished by Luke Rantucci to give the Tableland side an early lead.

The midday sun took its toll on the Comets who struggled to cope with the heat allowing Luke Rantucci to score his second.

Leading comfortably by the dreaded 2-0 score line the team knew how important it was to score a third to shut out the game.

It came midway through the second half when Marco Capella put the match beyond doubt even though the Comets scored a conciliation goals minutes from the end.

Vicki Owokran was awarded player of the final.

The toughest of the Bulls three Finals games proved to be against the highly fancied Stratford United in the under thirteen/ fourteen division 1.

The premiership winning side went into the match full of confidence and had most of the early

play but it was the Bulls that took the lead in the 17th minute through Aedan Wolff to send a shudder down the spine of their opponents.

Eleven minutes later Cameron Browning scored the Bulls second to give them a 2-0 lead into the half time break.

The second half was all about defence as Stratford peppered Mareeba’s goal with desperate shots from every angle. They did manage to score with 20 minutes remaining to bring the scour to 2-1 but a determined Mareeba outfit held strong to take out the final.

Congratulations to all three teams who played some amazing football it’s a credit the players their coaches and managers and the parents for making 2018 a hugely successful year.

In the reserves match, the Bulls went down 3-1 and will have seven days to prepare for the rematch against the Cutters this weekend in the major semi final.

The ladies put on a strong 45 minutes to lead the Cutters 2-0, but in a disappointing sign for this weekend’s elimination semifinal, the lady Bulls collapsed in the last 20 minutes to lose 3-2.

Bulls finish off season on a high The Mareeba Bulls travelled south to Innisfail on Saturday and came home with all three points to finish the season off on a high.

The Bulls went into the match needing all three points to get off the bottom of the ladder and were successfull coming away with a 2-0 win over the Innisfail Cutters. They started the match well, controlling most of the play and goals from Jaydon Wells and Leon Peressini was enough for the away side to secure the win

The two sides will meet again this Friday night in port Douglas in the FNQ 1st division mens major semi final for a shot at the grand final. Meanwhile the clubs 2nd division boys had the weekend off and will head down to Marlin Coast on Friday night taking on the Marlin Coast Rangers in the 1st v 2nd major semi final, also for a shot into the grand final.
