Locked out locals By Rebecca Wallis
Mareeba Shire Council is revisiting a decision to lock up a popular four wheel drive track leading to Mount Spurgeon after complaints from local four wheel drive enthusiasts. Council decided in April this year to put a
locked gate at the end of a road that leads to the mountain near Mt Carbine after it became almost impassable for residents living on it. Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council had spent $30,000 fixing up the track two years ago, only for it to become eroded again by joy riders. “There are two people

that live up the road and last year it was so chewed up those residents couldn’t even get home after a shopping trip,” he said. “The road was degraded and was at risk of being lost. But the annual cost of maintaining a road for two people is enormous and they’re entitled to that.” Cr Gilmore said the gate
was installed to allow limited access, with a key left at the Mt Carbine Caravan Park. But Julatten four wheel drive enthusiast Sharon Weston said she was shocked when she tried to access the track last week only to find the gate locked. She and her partner regularly utilise the road to visit Mount Spurgeon Nation-
al Park and said she knew nothing about a gate until she got there. “We go up there all the time and at Easter and public holidays there are always lots of people camping up there – locals and visitors,” she said. “Now we’re told we have to stay at the caravan park in order to get the key
for the gate, but we’re locals. You don’t do that if you live here. There should be more than one key and they shouldn’t have closed it without telling anyone.” Cr Gilmore said the problem was that the steep road was being abused by thrill seekers. “We don’t want it to be used as a toy and people

spinning their wheels,” he said. “But we will revisit this in council.” Ms Weston said that locking up the track was one of many examples in the region. “As four-wheel drivers we have just found that so many tracks are closed, which just makes us really angry,” she said.

Spate of drink driving offences
Police are disturbed by the drink driving results for the Tablelands after five people were charged on Friday night for driving under the influence. Police intercepted a 44-year-old Gordonvale man on Fourth Avenue, Atherton and when required to provide a roadside breath test, he returned a positive reading of 0.146 per cent BAC. Police also intercepted a 56-year-old Tarzali woman in Millaa Millaa, and it will be alleged that when required to provide a roadside breath test, she returned a positive reading of 0.054 per cent. A 28-year-old Dimbulah man was intercepted at about 7:50pm on Mareeba Dimbulah Road, Dimbulah, and it will be alleged that when required to provide a roadside breath test, he returned a positive reading of 0.127 per cent BAC. A 43-year-old local man was intercepted on Atherton Street, Mareeba, and when required to provide a roadside breath test, he returned a positive reading of 0.107 per cent. It will also be alleged that police intercepted a 22-year-old local woman at about 8:20pm on Argyle Street, Dimbulah, and when required to provide a roadside breath test, she returned a positive reading of 0.083 per cent BAC.
The new Atherton Chamber of Commerce President Christine Doan is wasting no time getting economy-boosting projects underway.
Reaping the rewards of the Baton Relay parade
By Rebecca Wallis
Atherton Chamber of Commerce’s new president Christine Doan is no stranger to a bit of sports fanfare – she was Australia’s only dressage representative at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Now, together with Tablelands Regional Council, she’s working hard to ensure that the community reaps the benefits of the Commonwealth Baton Relay when it is brought through the Tablelands next March ahead of the Gold
Coast event. The baton will be run through Ravenshoe, Atherton, Tolga and Mareeba as part of the Queen’s Baton Global Relay and Ms Doan wants local retailers, tourism companies, sports groups and hospitality businesses to get involved. “I’m interested in the economic development that we can get out of this,” she said. “Atherton doesn’t have a huge community spirit. We hope that long term this will bring community cohesion and dress up the town. Atherton is looking a
bit sad at the moment.” Ms Doan got the ball rolling earlier this week with an information session to try and get the community on board. She said there would be a series of events happening around the relay which would see each town experience the batonbearer and entourage for 15 minutes at a time. Around 100 officials and organisers will then spend the night in Atherton. “Out of these few minutes of symbolic baton running we can make such a big deal that all local busi-
nesses and the community gain a big boost,” she said. “ATCC has already applied for substantial funding to enable all businesses and the community to benefit from the Baton Relay as well as from other sports events that follow closely after.” Ms Doan started her tenure as president of the Chamber in June this year. She stepped into the role after the chamber had suffered a tenuous period. “The Chamber had a terrible year,” said Ms Doan who was the Vice President at the time.
“Nobody now wants this thing that stinks like rotten fish. We want to make sure the Chamber now reaches its full potential.” Ms Doan said she now wants both the Atherton Chamber of Commerce and the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce to work together to “make this a whole of Tablelands event”. For more information about how you can get involved contact Christine Doan, President of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce on 0419 656 247 or visit www.athertonchamber.com.au
Milk contract to stay local thanks to Knuth JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis
Shane Knuth has had another big win for his constituents by overturning a decision to take milk and dairy contracts away from local suppliers. The Katter Party Member for Dalrymple lobbied the government to review the situation after Cairns
and Hinterland Health Service announced late last month they would not be renewing their contract with Dairy Farmers in Malanda. “Local producers will continue to supply milk and dairy products to Cairns and Hinterland Hospital
and Health Service hospitals,” said Clare Douglas, Chief Executive, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service in a statement.“The Health Service has determined not to proceed with the new milk and dairy supply contract. “We will be returning to
our existing suppliers for milk and dairy products.” Mr Knuth said he was thrilled with the outcome. “I lost sleep when I found out that local dairy farmers in Malanda had been cut off from the CHHHS milk and dairy contracts in favour of a com-
pany a thousand kilometres away. When something is wrong, it is so important to speak up, or nothing will change,” he said. “I will always stand up and fight when something is wrong, but this wrong could not have been fixed without support from the
media in spreading the word. I want to thank all of the journalists who worked to see this issue get coverage. I also thank the Minister for listening, and acting to fix this quickly.” “The knock-on effect decisions like this can have on a community are huge.”

Dimbulah Health Centre nearing completion
By Rebecca Wallis
Construction work is about to finish at Dimbulah’s $4.7million Primary Health Centre and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth was keen to see how progress was going during a visit to the town last Friday. After lobbying by a steering committee headed by local Gaye Taylor and backed by Mareeba Hospital COAG board members Mick Borzi and Gilbert Teitzel, Mr Knuth pushed hard for the people of Dimbulah to have a new medical centre – over 50 years since the current one was built. “Over the years little towns have been undervalued, but the fact is that we could see there was a need here and we had a strong case but you have to have good presentation, so we got a petition going, we had public meetings, we had letters of support, we had all things going straight to the minister directly,” Mr Knuth said. Dimbulah local Mrs Taylor contacted her local member for assistance with getting the town an upgraded medical facility. “The old building was built in 1964, it was full of asbestos and past its usedby date,” she said. “I said we should get

Shane on board which we did and nine months later we had the funding. We’re very proud of what Shane has achieved for us.” Now the finishing touches are being made to the building which sits next to the old Dimbulah Hospital on Stephens Street with hopes it will be up and running before Christmas. Mr Knuth said they were hoping for “something better” than the old
TRC’s $100,000 boost for seniors Tablelands Regional Council has been successful in securing a grant for $100,000 through the 2017-18 Advancing Qld: Age-friendly community grants program to develop an age-friendly, access for all abilities, fitness area in the Prior’s Creek precinct, next to the Mountain Bike Skills Park. The Office of Seniors received 96 applications for funding and Tablelands Regional Council is one of
twelve successful applicants. “This will be an excellent resource for our seniors as well as other members of our community. It carries many benefits including promoting health and wellbeing and social cohesion,” commented Mayor Joe Paronella. “We want all of our residents and visitors to enjoy the enviable lifestyle we have here on the Tablelands.”
hospital but that what they are getting is a state-of-theart facility. “We’re very appreciative,” he said “It’s a win-win for the Dimbulah community and surrounding regions and this will no doubt keep people here in this town and it will keep people off the roads that have to travel and it will provide a better health service.” The new centre will help
locals avoid a 90km round trip to Mareeba for routine care and will give outlying communities somewhere to go. Gabrielle Honeywood, Executive Director Rural and Health Support Services, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service said the build was on track but an opening date had not yet been finalised. “Construction of the
Dimbulah Primary Health Centre is well on track and progressing well with all major construction works now completed,” she said. “The internal fit out of the new building is currently being finalised, as well as the ambulance entry, car parks and landscaping. “We are expecting commissioning of the new clinic to commence in September, with demolition of the old clinic to take place by
the end of October. “While we do not have an official opening date as yet, Dimbulah residents can expect that the new clinic will be operational as soon as possible following completion.” Mr Knuth said he was impressed with the facility and acknowledged the hard work that had gone into getting it to this stage. “The Dimbulah people feel valued as a result of
the scale of this project,” he said. “It didn’t come on a silver platter and there was a lot of work that was put in from the local steering committee. “This was virtually an old cottage, virtually unworkable with many complaints and we were able to get the minister involved to participate in this and we were very pleased the funding was announced.”

Owner wants justice for Bolto Purebred Husky Bolto.
By Rebecca Wallis
Mareeba Shire Council has defended its actions over euthanizing a dog that was found wandering the streets, but the owners want the laws changed around dog impoundment. Bolto, a pure bred husky was picked up by council officers in Mareeba on August 3 and euthanized on August 8 after alleging it was unclaimed. Mayor Tom Gilmore said “we have quite clear procedures” and that Council took the appropriate
measures to contact the owners and gave them time to pay the registration and claim the dog. “People need to realise that if you have a dog you need to have proper pet ownership which includes having it well contained and registered,” he said. “This animal was not well contained or registered.” Stray dogs found by council officers are usually impounded for three days while the owners are contacted and – if necessary – fix up enclosures. Cr Gilmore said the dog’s owner
was contacted within hours of the dog being picked up and that they were given an extended five days to pay the fine “in the hope that a positive outcome could be achieved”. Cr Gilmore said each dog is then assessed to see if it is suitable for rehoming, which in this instance it wasn’t. But the dog’s owner, Kylie Rosin said she and her son visited the Mareeba Shire Council offices four times after his impoundment trying to establish the dog’s whereabouts and tried to pay his expired reg-
istration, only to be told he was “not on the system”. “I was told he had bitten a council officer on the leg when they caught him and was told he was not to be released,” said Ms Rosin. “I went in there twice trying to find out where he was and so did my son but no one could tell me where he was. “When I tried to register him they said he was not on the system.” Ms Rosin said she was told the dog was destroyed because he had attacked someone, a claim that Mareeba Shire Council deny.
“Council would like to make it very clear that the dog was not euthanised on the grounds that it was an aggressive animal, it was euthanised after due process was followed and the dog was unclaimed within the prescribed period under section 29 (2) – Local Laws No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011,” a Council spokesperson said. Ms Rosin said that she now wants the law changed. “I want justice,” she said. “I want them to be accountable for what they did.”

77 year old’s 10,000km journey on a motorbike By Rebecca Wallis
Steven Szekely is emabarking on a huge trip to raise money for Cancer Research.
SEVENTY-seven year old Steven Szekely is not your average pensioner. The Dimbulah Lions member has survived kidney and bladder cancer and now wants to raise money for research into the disease with a 10,000km motorbike trip. “When you have to do something, it’s in your blood,” said the Hungarian-born local. “I love it. It

is my passion.” It’s not the first time Mr Szekely has embarked on such a massive endeavour for charity. Six years ago he tried to tackle a similar trip on his 37-year-old motorbike but came unstuck thanks to an unruly kangaroo. This time he wants to stop at Lions Clubs around the country on route to Sydney via Alice Springs. He is hoping to raise $20,000 for Cancer Research.
Mr Szekely has been a member of the Lions Club for 25 years and has twice been Citizen of the Year. He anticipates his trip will take ‘a few months’ with a stop-over in Sydney to see his two daughters. Local business Mareeba Honda is supporting Mr Szekely on his trip, along with his fellow Lions Club members including President Eddie Toffanello. Mareeba Shire Councillor Angela Toppin, hospital staff members Michelle Bombardieri and Robyn George with Les and Anne Mills and Director of Nursing Vickye Coffey.
Local couple’s generous gift A Mareeba couple have left a parting gift for the town with a $60,000 donation of medical equipment to the hospital before they relocate to Cairns. Les and Anne Mills are soon to leave their Tablelands home to move closer to family in Cairns but said they wanted to make one last significant donation to their local hospital of the past 38 years. Since 2012, they have donated $160,000 worth of equipment to Mareeba Hospital. Funded through the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the equipment includes an i-STAT machine for the-
atre/maternity, two vital signs monitors, a hoist to help lift frail elderly people, a bladder scanner and a hoverjack for bariatric patients. Mr Mills said he comes from a family of ‘giving’ people. “I’m really pleased that the staff are showing so much enthusiasms about our donations. And it’s really nice to see. We try very hard to support our local community,” he said. “We’re giving people and that’s always been our way. This is something that Anne’s expertise has developed over time, she’s been building it up and it got to
a stage where it became a reality for us.” The couple are in the process of creating a foundation so they can continue to donate money to worthwhile projects. They said they will continue to donate to the Tablelands and other regional towns despite moving to the coast. “We get a list and we choose what we’re giving,” said Mr Mills. “We’ve given to Cooktown, Georgetown, Forsythe and Cairns Base. We chose Mareeba this year.” Director of nursing and midwifery Vickye Coffee said staff and patients were very grateful

Remembering Vietnam heroes By Rebecca Wallis
Ex-servicemen, veterans and members of the public gathered at Anzac Park in Mareeba on Friday to remember those that lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Vietnam Veterans War Day is held annually by the Mareeba RSL and includes a service, a march through the town and a discounted
traditional meal at the Digger’s Bistro. Padre Mick Grant said it is an opportunity to remember what our Vietnam Veterans have done for us. “This is a time that we can remember those that have served, those that have sacrificed their lives, those that have seen the horrors of war and those today that are still carrying the battle scars” he said.
“We thank them for our freedom we have today.” Vietnam Veterans War Day is held on August 18 annually and was originally known as Long Tan Day. It was chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over
2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. 18 Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded. In 1987 Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. Mareeba RSL organise an annual march and service in recognition.

First turbine foundation in place
This photo shows the enormity of the wind turbine base at Mt Emerald.
Construction at the $360 million Mount Emerald Wind Farm reached an important milestone last week when the first of 53 turbine foundations was put in place. The 800-tonne foundation which is buried to ground level provides an immovable anchor for each turbine and consists of a 50-tonne reinforced steel cage filled with around 350m3 tonnes of concrete, or up to 70 truckloads. Ratch Australia Corporation Executive General Manager Business Development, Mr Anthony Yeates, said the first foundation was always a special
milestone in wind farm construction. “Up until this point, the focal point for construction has been civil works, establishing the site office and constructing access roads following meticulous flora, fauna and unexploded ordinance surveys,” Mr Yeates said. “Getting the first foundation poured is the first big ticket items on our scope of works,” he said. Mr Yeates said the concrete used for each foundation will be manufactured onsite to reduce truck movements on public roads. Up to four weeks is allowed for the concrete to
cure to maximum strength before the foundation is backfilled with rock and soil to match the natural surface level. At this point, the foundation is ready for the bottom section of the tower to be bolted to it. Wind turbine components will be delivered over an eight-month period starting in October. The delivery route will see trucks head south from Cairns along the Palmerston and Kennedy Highways before Hansen and Springmount Roads are used to get to site. “It’s exciting to see the project really begin to take shape,” Mr Yeates said.

Have your say in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey The Australian Bureau of Statistics will be giving all eligible Australians the opportunity to express their view on whether Australian marriage laws should be changed to allow same sex couples to marry. Enrol, check or update your details at www.aec.gov.au or pick up an enrolment form at any AEC office or Post Office.
An interactive cooking class will be held in Mareeba next week encouraging locals to try their hand at whipping up some healthy meals. The workshop will be held at the CWA hall in Mareeba on August 30 from 9.30am and are run by experienced dietician Dorothy Richmond who has been working in Mareeba for three years. “Dietitians encourage people to follow a healthy diet but often people also need basic cooking, shopping and commodity skills to instigate change,” she said. “A great way to have new food experiences is to be involved in a workshop that enables people to source, prepare, cook and above all appreciate the flavour of food around a shared table.
“This is particularly important for people who are on a restricted budget where packaged pre-prepared food may appear to be the only alternative.” Dishes prepared utilise basic food equipment and low-cost ingredients sourced locally. “Cooking workshops enable participants to acquire knife skills and experiment with healthy cooking methods of not just meals but also snacks,” she said. “Interactive cooking classes and tasting of new dishes in a social environment empowers people to make changes to their diet with positive health outcomes for the whole family.” Bookings can be made at www.dorothydietician. com.au or by phoning Dorothy on 0488 096 110.

Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 10 but weekly throughput was above target. The factory processed 42,728 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 323 tonnes/hour. Major down time for the week occurred with a 10 hour scheduled maintenance day. Other down time was for a bagasse system choke, high speed elevator choke, control wiring failure in the juice circuit and a trip of the 6MW alternator. The pan stage has been rate limiting since switching back to JB1 sugar production from JA brand. The CCS continues to be on budget while expected tonnages appear to be dropping off slightly. • Total for week: 42,728 tonnes • CCS for week: 13.25 • Total cane crushed to date: 383,661 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.31 • 2017 crop estimate: 930,000 tonnes

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro, 2016 winner Warren Jonsson and Lucy Nastasi are encouraging farmers to nominate for the annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award.
LOCAL farmers are being encouraged to nominate for an award that recognises achievements and progress in the industry. The annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award aims to recognise “outstanding innovation and exceptional leadership” in the horticultural industry across the Tablelands. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) president Joe Moro said the area had many rising stars in the horticultural field. “Charlie Nastasi was a pioneer of the industry and this award is a great way to promote the innovation that is happening across our region,” said Mr Moro. “We receive great nominations every year and everyone who gets nomi-
nated is very worthy of the award. “It’s always hard to pick an overall winner,” said Joe. The award recognises individual farmers and nominations are open to all, no matter their size, and it could be for either something in the past 12 months or the past 20 years. Past winners of the award include winner Warren Jonsson from Ravenshoe, best known for his Jonsson’s Farm Market stores, Mark Reppel and Mareeba brothers Joe and Tony Bianco. “Past winners of the award have all been well deserved and they all continue to do great things in the industry. Mr Moro also added that a female farmer is still yet to win the award and
hopes to see a winner in the near future. “There’s a lot of women doing some wonderful things in the industry and we encourage them to nominate. “It’s also important to remember that this award is not just about the growing side of things, it’s about being innovative and also about taking on issues on behalf of industries within the horticultural sector.” The award’s winner will be announced at the annual MDFVGA dinner at Mareeba International Club on Friday September 15. Nominations are now open and close on September 1, 2017 to mdfvga@bigpond. com. Bookings for the gala dinner are also open and can be made by emailing jam.lopez97@gmail.com or phoning 4092 6099.

Shooters dress to impress The Single Action Northfield Cowboys’ Annual Memorial weekend Shoot was held on August 11-13, at the Mareeba Rifle Range. The Mareeba Rifle Club was host to 22 shooters from as far afield as Cairns, Ingham and Townsville on the weekend. The overall winners were – First: David Spooner (AKA Hoss Rustler), second: Peter Morozoff (AKA Cyclone Pete) and third: Michael Norris (AKA Dixon Mills). All competitors dressed in western costume and
used alias names. Six ladies shot alongside the men and juniors, while other family members watched the fun. A highlight of the last day was the closely contested Cowboy Clays shotgun shoot. Jack Sparks (AKA Marshal Jack Malone) and John Thomson (AKA Speewah Jack) had to have two shootouts before Jack Sparks won. Jack Sparks aged 15 years is the Mareeba Rifle Club’s youngest shooter and John Thomson is the oldest at 75 years, showing it really is a great family sport for all ages.

The Stingrays senior men’s side continue to climb the championship point table following an exciting 49 to 43 win over Red Devils in Mareeba Basketball weekly fixtures. An excellent clash between these two sides, with generally strong defence during the first half of the encounter, with Red Devils holding a narrow 23 to 19 lead at the major break. However after the half time interval a number of successful baskets by the young trio of Dean Gallo, Declan Ebner and Jake Priestly, together with the experienced David Hawke took the game away from Red Devils with the Stingrays side holding a 37 to 28 advantage at three quarter time. Red Devils staged a comeback over the concluding stages, with necessary baskets from Clinton Cameron, Andy Harris
and Juni Bordeos. But the Stingrays held off the challenge to gain victory by 6 points. In other men’s fixtures played last week, Blue Angels were in tremendous form defeating Ciggy Butts by 83 to 55 while spare parts were comfortable winners over Barras 41 to 27. In the Ladies fixtures both the Shockers and The Dust Ladies sides recorded convincing victories in the senior ladies competition fixtures. Shockers were 39 to 10 winners over Gigglers and The Dust combination gave a good 37 to 16 defeat of Miakats. Highlights of these fixtures were the fine outstanding performances by Tracey Leet who scored 19 points for Shockers and Sunni Lin with 21 points for The Dust side. They not only dominated the individual scoring but also with
their general good all court display throughout the encounters. For the losing sides, Olivia Battistin was best for Gigglers and young Rachel Brcko showing out well on occasions for Miakats. Junior fixtures played last week proved a mixture for Hawkes Prey. They proved too solid for Alex V.I.P by 47 to 24. While Hawkes Prey second outing on the night resulted in a narrow defeat to Andy’s Angels by 46 to 43. In representative games supporters should witness a number of interesting and entertaining matches when Mareeba and Port Douglas association contest games at the Mareeba Sports Hall this coming Saturday. No doubt with teams from both centres keen to gain success during the day, then closely fought encounters could well eventuate.

Gators through to semi finals after five years Forwards Adam Molly and Clinton Lilo both performed well again for the Roosters on Saturday night.
Season over for Roosters The Atherton Roosters have rounded out their 2017 season and 99th year with a 48 to 24 loss to ladder leaders Innisfail on Saturday night at Roosters Stadium. The match was enter-
taining with plenty of long running attacking plays from both sides and Innisfail showing that part of the secret to leading the competition is being able to put your opposition to the sword when you have
a lead. Atherton went to the half time break just one converted try down at 16 to 22 and continued to show the great run of form the side has had since the start of July.
Nigel Woodleigh scored in the 71st minute to take his tally to 11 tries in his last six matches. Innisfail put on 26 points in the final 20 minutes to put the result beyond doubt but up to that point a Roosters upset was
on the cards. With the season now over, the Atherton Roosters will now hold their end of year presentation night this Friday, August 25, at the clubhouse.
The Gladiators have achieved what the team has failed to for the last five years - a spot in the semi finals of the Cairns District Rugby League. The boys made a massive comeback on Friday night winning 28-8 to Suburbs in the last game of the season after a shocker the week before. “After last week's game, we had a good week of training,” said coach Tye Ingebrigtsen. “We had a couple of injuries but we man-
aged to gain back our enthusiasm and we've got back our energy now ready for the semi finals.” The team are now gearing up for the first semi-finals clash against the Yarrabah Seahawks at Barlow Park. “It's really exciting,” said Ingebrigtsen. “We just need to get through this top five final system and make it to the end.” The Gladiators are still sitting second place on the ladder.

‘The best job in the world’
TEN years ago Locky Bensted was asked to stand up in front of a crowd of rowdy cowboys at the Mt Carbine Rodeo as their official announcer. With prior experience as an auctioneer and a keen follower of the rodeo scene, the now 32 year old jumped at the chance. “It's the best job in world,” said Locky who was given a commemorative buckle celebrating his 10th anniversary at the Mt Carbine rodeo last weekend. “You've got the best spot in the house and make some good mates that you get the chance to rub a bit of curry about. I've seen riders come through from riding calves through to the
PBR.” Talking of which, Locky was recently invited to announce at the PBR when it held events in both Cairns and Brisbane, and has been invited to do the same at the Cup Series when it is held in Melbourne later this year. As a Mareeba boy his heart is in the local rodeos, but he's keen to have a shot with the PBR nationally and even internationally. "It's very productionbased," he said of the difference between the local rodeos and the PBR. "You're working with TV crews and it's a bit like being on a show. I have to do a lot more research about the riders." By day Locky is self
employed and when out driving in his tractor, he tunes in to his phone to keep up to date with what bull riders around the world are up to. His passion for the sport just falls short of him having a go himself. “When I was really young a had a bit of a go,” he said. “But then I saw the light.” Locky recently became a dad for the first time, welcoming baby Lewis Jack into the world with wife Christine. He said he was honoured to have been given the buckle and would “wear it with pride”.
Bulls cop rough deal from ref
Controversy has marred the Mareeba Bulls 1-1 draw at home on Saturday night against the Southside Comets, with the Bulls finals hopes now resting in a knives edge. The Bulls played valiantly and left everything out on the park, but will feel hard done by with three ‘questionable’ calls all going against the homeside, leaving fans and players in disbelief. Locked at 1-all the controversy started midway through the second half when a Paul Ruiz goal was disallowed. This was followed when Damian Wildman was subbed on in the 88th minute and a first touch header off a corner that looked to have crossed the line and was stopped by what seemed to most a Southside defenders arm. The dubious calls continued in the 94th minute when Wildman was clearly brought down by the Comets goalkeeper which looked like a clear penalty only for the match referee to wave play on. Later officials said they believed Wildman’s foot hit the keepers hand, instead of the other way around. The draw leaves the
Bulls season balancing on a tight rope, needing the Stratford Dolphins to beat the Innisfail Cutters by two goals in the last round for the Mareeba premiers to sneak into the finals on goal difference. “The boys gave absolutely everything, they played their hearts out and we did enough to win the game, it’s just so disappointing that factors outside of our control effected the outcome of the match,” said Bulls coach Alex Srhoj. “We scored three goals, we deserved to win the game, it feels so wrong and I am just gutted for the players.” The match itself ebbed and flowed with the Comets coming out firing inside the opening ten minutes, before the Bulls settled and took control. The were rewarded with a Robert Pendenza screamer, latching onto the ball thirty metres out and sending a rocket into the top corner to give the homeside a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half the young Comets again came out full of running and drew level in the 61st minute, before the Bulls again took control
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
and totally dominated the last fifteen minutes of play. But together with some desperate defending from the Comets and three game changing calls going against the Bulls, the game finished a draw. The Bulls Reserve team had a massive 7-1 win, with Wildman scoring a hattrick and the team now looks to have secured a finals spot. Meanwhile the ladies fought hard and played well, but went down 2-1 against the Comets earlier in the day. On Friday night, the clubs two Second Division Men’s sides both went down. The clubs Orange side lost 3-0 to the Atherton Eagles and the Black side lost 2-1 to the Edge Hill Tigers. This weekend the Premiers and Reserves have the league bye, while the ladies will play their last game of the season on Saturday against the JCU Strikers. The Second Division Orange team will travel down to take on the Edge Hill Tigers, with the Black team travelling down to Innisfail.

Records tumble at athletics carnival 5-year-old Harrison Cooper from Dimbulah competes in the Long Jump.
Tableland Athletics recently hosted their Annual Pentathlon Day Track and Field carnival on Sunday August 6. Under grey skies and morning drizzle 155 athletes from the Tablelands and Cairns regions and from Ravenshoe to Innisfail descended on Tolga Sports Grounds for an action packed day. Competitors aged from four to 66
years all competed in the fixed five event program. The program comprised of a combination of events from 60m, 80m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, high jump, discus, shot put and javelin. Once the drizzle dissipated, track records in particular began falling. In total 18 Pentathlon event records were broken. The most significant
record broken on the day was by local Tableland Athletics athlete from Walkamin, seven year-old Milan Della Bosca, who in the long jump set a new mark of 3.49m – breaking the old mark of 3.39m that has stood for 20 years. The Tolga Throws Pentathlon was popular with 17 competitors throwing Hammer, Discus, Shot put, Javelin and the Heavy
weight throw (up to 16kg). Athletes from 14 to 66 years competed and there were 12 records broken in this unique program. Shane Knuth, Member for Dalrymple was on hand to present medals to the podium placers, Pentathlon Day Record Breaker trophies and to draw the numerous raffle prizes.
