WITH the school year coming to an end, Mareeba State High School took a moment to reflect and commemorate outstanding academic prowess over the school year.

Special guests and parents were invited to attend an extended weekly parade at the MSHS Hall with 60 plus students receiving praise and awards for their accomplishments.

Students who competed in Australia wide competitions and received credits, distinctions and high distinctions were celebrated – brain bee students, lions youth of the year participants, chess players, even students who participated in residential camps were also celebrated.

The students, parents and special guests were then treated to a morning tea held in the library.

Gifted and Talented coordinator Stefanie Prizmic was extremely proud of the students.

“It’s important to recognise these achievements and the students because it shows the rest of the students that if you put your mind to something and you apply for something you can do great things,” she said.

“The students who have done these programs and participated in these extracurricular activities have achieved great results.

“It’s also important to include the special guests and the

parents because the parents want to celebrate with their children as well.”

Mrs Prizmic believes that a parent’s understanding and involvement towards their child’s success can further improve their schooling lives and grades.

“Students need to see that their parents value education,” she said.

“Their child’s success is also a reflection on the parents themselves and their support.

“If their parents didn’t support them then the students wouldn’t be able to do these things.”

MSHS Principal Scott Whybird was unable to attend the parade but spoke glowingly at the morning tea.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who has turned up today,” he said.

“It really fills your soul when you start seeing the number of students that go up on parade.

“I know that Mrs Prizmic is being very active in her role after Mrs Ellicott.”

Mr Whybird has had experience at 10 different schools and claims that Mareeba State High School preforms above and beyond at the opportunities it is

granted.

“What happens at a lot of schools is that they don’t look at the academic abilities of students,” he said.

“And that’s something that I think is really important about Mareeba High.

“I am very passionate about extracurricular activities, the fact that we have people that are interested in doing chess competitions and things like that, I think that’s magnificent.”

Mr Whybird spoke about the nature of school, stating that it was very ‘inclusive’ “I can’t tell you how proud

I am, because this school is one that does so many fantastic things and encourages so many things,” he said.

“Quite often you can hear a lot of the negative things, and I guarantee that negatives are always going to be a part of what happens.

“But if you walk around the school at any time, you will see magnificent students doing magnificent things with very supportive teachers and parents.”

Arts showcase sure success YOUNG and upcoming artists were in the spotlight last Monday at Mareeba State School with the opening of their arts showcase.

The showcase featured art pieces from all grades and classes, with 37 classes in total contributing to the library’s weeklong makeover.

Head of Curriculum Valerie Dayes and Library Manager Leevi Elmes were pleased with the opening and were proud of the student’s art works.

“The students have done a great job with their artworks,” Mrs Dayes said.

“The showcase has been on and off over the years, but we’re starting to make it more regular.

“We do one every year now.”

Each year level in the school was given a medium for their art work, from colouring, to paper mache, clay making, painting

and more.

The students each created their artwork based off the theme ‘material madness’, with some classes taking it literally by making an art piece entirely comprised of natural materials such as sticks, leaves, rocks or by making practical flower pots and wearable skirts from newspaper.

Mrs Elmes was happy to see the library not only packed full of artwork, but also packed full of people.

“It was good to see people coming out and enjoying the artwork the students made,” she said.

“It was really good and we had lots of great feedback.

“We even had people ringing up and leaving messages at the office.”

Mrs Elmes believes that the art showcase not only allows par-

ents and community members to experience the art but also allows students to express their creative desires.

“It’s a great way for kids to express and enjoy themselves,” she said.

“The kids love to do artwork and this way other people can enjoy it too.

“All the classes were very excited – it was one of the best art shows we’ve had”.

Increased calls for more controlled burning are being made to ensure we experience a safe fire season next year.

Calls for controlled burning WITH a spate of fires having battered the region in recent weeks, increased calls for more controlled burning are being made to ensure future damage to properties and crops is kept to a minimum.

One such individual who is concerned is Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor and Mount Carbine resident Alan Pedersen, who believes landowners need to be made more aware of the preparations and measures they can take to pro-

tect themselves and other properties from bushfires.

“I think the problem we continually see is that landowners are leaving it too late put in breaks,” he said.

“I’m out in the western area and we bring in helicopters and firebomb from April through to July where we do massive areas consisting of hundreds of kilometres.

“And when I come into town (Mareeba and surrounds), I see these beautiful corridors that

are council roads that could’ve been burned back in July and now they’re just holding huge fuel loads.”

Cr Pedersen said greater collaboration between the Mareeba Shire Council, TMR, the QFES, Rural Fire Service and landowners is required to ensure a safer fire season next year.

“A simple firebreak won’t hold it, the corridors need to be 50-100 metres wide – so if we can achieve that through early burning that would give land-

owners a lot more security relating to their properties,” he said.

“So we’ll do our best at Council to work with the necessary people to ensure landowners have a greater understanding of what they can and can’t do regarding controlled burning.

“We seem to be having these issues every year, so we want the community thinking about fires when it’s not fire season such as in April and May.” The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service’s (QFES)

Ms Quirk also called on landowners to be ready for what is a gruelling summer ahead.

“As there is a bit of lull at the moment with the conditions, landowners should take this opportunity to start making preparations for what will be a long and hot fire season ahead,” she said.

“As stated in the act, all reasonable measures should be taken to ensure a fire doesn’t escape from their land.”

Acting Inspector and Area Director for the Cairns Peninsula Fiona Quirk said the issuing of fire permits is at the discretion of the region’s local fire warden.

“There’s a reluctance to hand out fire permits at this stage and when they are, there are strict regulations in place to prevent the escape of a fire,” she said.

“Some of those regulations include lighting fires later in the afternoon and when there aren’t significant wind gusts around for example.”

MOUNT Molloy State School has been ushered into the history books with their recent induction into the Mareeba Garden Awards Hall of Fame.

The little school was inducted for their three year stint as winner of the Garden Sustainability category with their recent win at the 2019 Garden Show Awards in August.

The garden in question was only small until the start of 2012 when the school was gifted a $60 000 grant courtesy of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation which allowed the school to build a state of the art kitchen and improve on the garden.

The garden helps students gain life skills and helps educate them on sustainability practices.

Juliana Russel has been a vital part in growing the attitude towards sustainability and the garden itself being dubbed the ‘Garden Specialist’.

“It’s rewarding and shows the kids how to practice sustainability for the future,” Mrs Russel said.

“The students can learn a lot that can help them in the future through this program.

“Reusing seeds, water and doing certain practices that promote sustainability.”

The students use all the ingredients grown in the garden to supply their pizza making business which opens once a term.

Teacher/Co-ordinator Coyle MacGregor is thrilled with the progress of the students and their garden.

“Juliana had a small garden at school, so we applied for the grant at the end of 2011,” she said.

“When we got the grant at the beginning of 2012 we repurposed one of the spare classrooms and built a state of the art kitchen.

“We were the last of the big grants of $60 000, now it’s only about $10 000.”

The gardening program is now engrained within the school as it is now a part of the curriculum for the students.

Joy Peterson from the Mareeba District Garden Committee was on hand to present Mount Molloy State School their awards along with Elaine Duncan from Flourish Plants to gift them some flowers.

Pools on track to reopen

THE Mareeba and Dimbulah Swimming pools are on track to reopen at the beginning of next month, following the replacement of critical water treatment infrastructure, including the filtration systems.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the existing pool infrastructure has been in operation for many years and has reached the end of its functional life.

“Works have gone ahead as planned with minimal disruption and we thank the

community for their patience while these works were completed,” he said.

The replacement of the filters at the Dimbulah Pool is partially funded under the Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places & Spaces program and the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program. The Mareeba Swimming Pool project is funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

Cotters Aquatic Swim and Fitness will continue to operate the swimming pools at Mareeba and Kuranda and also takeover the lease management agreement for the Dimbulah pool and Caravan Park.

The Kuranda Pool has already reopened, while the Mareeba Pool began to refill last week.

Senate inquiry called into GBR FARMERS are putting up a fight against the proposed Great Barrier Reef regulations as they have enlisted the help of scientist Dr Peter Ridd.

Dr Ridd joined farmers from the Green Shirts Movement at Parliament in Canberra last week to meet with Resources Minister Matt Canavan - where they called upon the Federal Government to authorise an independent audit into the science behind the pesticide and fertiliser regulations.

Dr Ridd said the meeting was a resounding success.

“It was excellent, with it resulting in the Senate deciding to undertake an inquiry which will look at the relationship between agriculture and the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

“Hopefully out of that there will be a quality audit into the evidence base that claims agriculture is having a significant and detrimental impact on the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Dr Ridd said there are still

aspects of the scientific evidence which needs to be questioned, including the findings regarding sediment, nutrients, fertilisers and pesticides and their actual effect.

“For example, in the Great Barrier Reef proper, there have been such low concentrations of farm chemicals that they’re undetectable,” he said.

“They’re unable to measure the concentration of farm chemicals and their impact on 99 per cent of the coral, so questions need to be looked at as it relates to the weaknesses in some of the evidence that has been put forward.”

Dr Ridd isn’t averse to controversy, after he was sacked for publically criticising James Cook University’s climate change science in 2017.

The institution was ordered to pay Dr Ridd $1.2 million however as it was deemed by the Federal Court that he was unlawfully dismissed.

Despite the sensitive nature

of the subject at hand, Dr Ridd noted that all of the scientists he knows who are on the other side of the argument are genuine in their research and reporting – without a pre-set agenda attached.

“With that being said, I do think there has been a degree of emotionality attached to their work,” he said.

“That is not a criticism, as the majority of people do that, however I do feel that means we need quality checking of the evidence and it’s needed to be done robustly.

A lot of the comments that are voiced in opposition of my work are always about me and not my scientific findings. They rarely take me to task on my science.”

“There is no doubt through sheer red tape and increased

regulations on the use of fertiliser that these laws will inhibit on farmers’ productivity and

therefore profitability – particularly for cane farmers,” Dr Ridd said.

Remembrance day recognises fallen officers

THIS Friday the community will gather to pause, honour and remember fallen officers as part of National Police Remembrance Day in Mareeba.

National Police Remembrance Day (NPRD) marks the day the Queensland Police Service joins other Australasian police jurisdictions to stop and

honour fallen officers.

The Day is held all across regional Queensland centres and is also attended by members of the public and other emergency services.

Senior Constable Aleda Day is encouraging the community to join in the march and subsequent church service.

“We would appreciate the community attending the church service or marching with us from the station to the church,” she said.

“To remember and acknowledge the sacrifice of those officers who committed their lives to the safety and security of others.

“We will be remembering the

13 local officers who lost their lives whilst serving in this patrol group.”

Officers as far back as 1872 and as current as 2013 will be among those who will be honoured.

Current serving officers as well as retired officers, family and friends of the fallen officer, members of the community and other Emergency Service Staff will be attending the march from the Mareeba Police Station to the Abundant Life Church.

Relatives and police will light candles at the church service to remember the fallen officers.

“Every year a different officer’s story is told,” Constable Day said.

“This year we will be celebrating Senior Constable Lyle Hoey.

“Senior Constable Hoey lost his life on November 2, 1975 while attempting to intercept a break and enter suspect at Julatten.”

Senior Constable Day says the day recognises the unique nature of police service and the dangers police face in their daily pursuits.

“We remember and acknowledge the sacrifice of those offic-

ers who committed their lives to the safety and security of other,” she said.

“In recognition of those officers, we affirm our commitment to the principles of law enforcement.

“To serve with honour, courage, compassion, integrity and honesty in the quest to secure

a safe environment for all our communities.”

The march will begin outside the Mareeba Police Station at 9:30am and continue north along Walsh Street and stop to begin the service at the Abundant Life Church, opposite the PCYC Hall in Mareeba.

Mr McKinley said his greatest concern regarding crime in Mareeba is the increasing number of break and enters and car thefts happening against the town’s older population.

“It’s terrible to see the pensioners being the targets of these sorts of crimes,” he said.

“They are some of the most vulnerable people in our community and the financial and emotional hardship they’re experiencing as a result of such crimes is unacceptable.”

Tablelands Patrol Group Senior Sergeant Derek Garner echoed Mr McKinley’s comments, noting that the police service’s resources are limited and that any bit of help from the community is crucial.

“A lot of our resources are put towards situation with more of an immediate need,” he said.

“So ultimately the Neighbourhood Watch’s success is reliant upon community involvement.

“If neighbours can keep an eye out and report a crime or suspicious activity, it gives the police a far greater chance of identifying crimes and holding the culprits responsible.”

Tablelands Patrol Group Senior Constable Aleda Day

OUTGOING Area Coordinator of the Northern Tablelands Neighbourhood Watch Denis McKinley is calling on the community to become involved with the organisation as their Annual General Meeting (AGM) quickly approaches.

Held on November 11 at the Mareeba CWA Hall, the purpose of the AGM is to highlight the inherent need for organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch in helping the Queensland Police Service (QPS) curb crime in the community.

Mr McKinley said it’s critical for more members of the public from Mareeba and surrounds to become actively involved with Neighbourhood Watch.

“Limiting crime is a very complex problem and there’s certainly not an easy solution,” he said.

“But the more hands on deck we have from the community the better chance we have at fixing a number of the problems we are facing here.

“The Neighbourhood Watch does a fantastic job at assisting police in providing a safer region when utilised correctly – so we need to get the word out there about the important role such organisations play when they have strong community support.

“So we would like everyone

Race club on track for big year ahead THE Mareeba racing scene has received fresh blood in the form of a new committee for the Mareeba Turf Club after its annual general meeting last weekend.

Rex Petersen will lead the club after taking the reigns as the club’s new president and is looking to rebuild upon the foundation set by the previous committee.

“The last committee tried really hard, but they just had some bad luck,” he said. “We’ve got a new team involved so let’s hope we can have a good year.”

Under new management the Mareeba Racecourse is set to see changes with Mr Petersen applying for grants to improve the grounds and facilities.

“I’m going to put in for some grants to improve the grounds,” he said. “More stable facilities plus a new running rail, the current one is a bit past its time.

“At this point there are no major changes planned, things like this just need little things to help perk it all back up.”

Mr Petersen will also be monitoring the grounds more closely to watch for moisture to help create a better racing experience for everyone.

Well-known names on and off the track matter when promoting and organising races, Mr Petersen and his daughter Rowena are both well-known names in the racing scene.

Rowena and her mother Frances are now in charge of the Fashions on the Field for the upcoming Boxing Day races and the ones that follow.

“The Boxing Day races are the next big races to come to Mareeba,” Mr Petersen said.

“In fact they’re the only races after the Annuals – there are no smaller races in-between.

“So I hope everyone can get out there and support us, if we can get as many people out there as possible.”

Joining Rex is Alex Malliff and Georgia Sloane as vice presidents, Rhonda Stevens as treasurer and Cathy Sloane as the club secretary.

Wetlands hosts reconciliation movie night THE Tropical Wetlands Shared Earth Reserve will play host to a Reconciliation Film Night courtesy of Forever Wild next month.

The film night is a chance for community members to come together, learn and discuss the rich, vibrant history of Australia in the beautiful setting of the Tropical Wetlands.

The night will be held at Forever Wilds Shared Earth Reserve (Mareeba Wetlands) at 142 Pickford Road, Biboohra, at the main conservation centre and will either be held inside or outside, depending on the weather.

With gates open from 5pm, the night will be held on Saturday October 5 and will feature two Australian focussed documentaries about Australia’s culture and history and specifically focus of reconciliation.

The idea was spearheaded by Merrilee Frankish, a member of Forever Wild and their community based working group.

Forever Wild CEO Fiachra Kearney is excited about the upcoming film night.

“There have been some amazing films that have been made around this topic,” he said.

“We try to blend the reserve with all sorts of ideas that the community might have.

“We are fairly keen as an organisation to support this idea and help support social cohesion and development.”

The movie night is not only courtesy of Forever Wild, but also the Mareeba Shire Council and the Regional Arts Development Fund that helped Forever Wild get the equipment necessary to host the night.

“Getting that funding has been great, it’s allowed us to get a nice big screen and good speak-

ers,” Mr Kearney said.

“It should be a pretty good night, nothing too heavy, a very nice relaxed evening.”

A wildlife weekend will also be held the weekend before the movie night with the reserve being open from 6am to 6pm.

“We get a lot of requests from bird watchers to cone out so we decided to have an open weekend,” Mr Kearney said.

“People can just turn up, walk in, look around and just enjoy not only the birds but the beautiful landscape. “A lot of reserves can’t do these sorts of things in

the community due to public liability and costs, but we can.”

Mr Kearney said that most conversation reserves tend to be about conservation and wildlife only, and there are a small number of people in the community that are drawn to that and everyone else is largely excluded.

But Forever Wild is building up what they call a Shared Earth Reserve with is all about sustainable agriculture and community wellbeing.

“We can use our landscapes in so many different ways,” Mr Kearney said.

Australian sporting royalty to grace MOPS launch THE Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) Club are inviting all members of the community to come along to their Legends of League night on Friday, October 18 at the Mareeba Turf Club.

The event will consist of special guests Royce Simmons, Paul Sironen, Martin Bella and Wally Fullerton-Smith – with the four former rugby league legends boasting 57 State of Origin appearances between them.

Australian cricket legend Doug Walters will also be attending on the night.

Not only will the public have the opportunity to hear from and mingle with Australian sporting royalty, they will also be provided the chance to give to a worthy cause, as the night will also act as a fundraiser for MOPS, the Black Dog Institute and breast cancer awareness.

It will also be the official launch of MOPS, which is a new organisation that aims to bring people together in the region who have a love and enthusiasm for rugby league.

MOPS President Rob Miller said the event will be a great social outing for people of all ages.

“Men, women and children are all welcome,” he said.

“As this is a launch of MOPS, we’re hoping to increase the profile of the club and show everyone what we’re about.

Miller said the interest for

the Legends of League night has been strong thus far.

“The word is starting to get around town and I would like to thank Eddie Toffanello and the Dimbulah Lions Club for their support,” he said.

“It’s through their connections that we’ve been able to kick-start MOPS and get the explayers up for this event.

“Eddie is a member of MOPS and his experience in running similar events with Lions has really helped when organising this night.”

With 24 members of the Penrith Past Players Association also attending, it is shaping up

to be a wonderful community event.

For those interested in attending, the event will run from 6pm – late.

There will be raffles and auctions of memorabilia available on the night.

There is no entry fee; however $30 will get you a ticket in the lucky door prize and a burger.

MAREEBA State School (MSS) celebrated the joys of childhood on Thursday with the Under 8s Day being held at the schools new prep block and oval.

More than 800 students attended the fun filled day with children coming from Biboorah and the Mareeba Kids Campus, plus many outside kids with their parents and carers.

The day featured stalls, face painting, a jumping castle plus special visits from the Fire Brigade and the Police.

Mareeba Library, Mareeba Gymnastics and Mulungu Health Service were among some of the many stall holders.

MSS Head of Curriculum Valerie Dayes was happy to see so many kids out and enjoying all the activities.

“It’s just a sea of children and

people out here,” she said.

“We have to cater for over 800 children. “But none of this could be possible without the teacher aids, they work their butts off.”

The MSS U8s day is hugely supported by the community with food donations for the day being provided by Coles, Lindsay Transport, Morganbury Meats and the P & C Association.

The MSS Choir and Auslan Choir preformed on the day as well as a joined MSS and MSHS instrumental band performance.

The theme for this year’s U8s day was ‘Diversity of languages within the home culture and community’ celebrating all the different cultures and languages present within the Mareeba shire.

It’s not a race: Pace yourself to holidays ON the eve of school holidays, the State’s peak motoring body put drivers on notice after startling new figures showed more than one third of drivers admitted to speeding on freeways and highways.

According to the RACQ Annual Road Safety Survey,

more than 30 percent of drivers admitted to travelling too fast on high speed roads in 90 to 110km/hour zones.

Tailgaters driving Queenslanders crazy TAILGATING has been touted as the most infuriating behaviour on Queensland roads, for a fourth year in a row.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said almost 93 percent of drivers who responded to the Club’s ‘What Drives You Crazy’ survey said motorists travelling too close was the most frustrating habit.

“We’ve seen tailgating rank highly once again and it’s of real concern so many drivers still don’t fully appreciate the danger,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Tailgating doesn’t just cause stress to others, it

can also increase the risk of nose-to-tail crashes, and at speed, the results of that can be serious and even fatal.

“We also found drivers who increase their speed while someone is trying to overtake them is another habit that really grinded the gears of many people while behind the wheel.”

Ms Ritchie said other irritating behaviours like littering, using mobile phones and not indicating correctly rounded out the top five for 2019.

“Many of these aren’t just dangerous and discourteous – they’re also highly illegal,” she said.

“If you’re caught doing them you could land yourself a hefty fine and demerit points.

“We all have the right to feel safe on our roads, and that needs to start with everyone getting back to basics by following the rules and showing each other a little respect along the way.”

Roosters finish season on a high

FRESH off recently being announced Queensland Rugby League’s Grassroots Club of the Year, the Atherton Roosters will have the next few months before the upcoming season to reflect on what was an extremely successful 2019.

All four senior grades made the finals in their respective competitions, and while they weren’t able to come away with any silverware, the depth and consistency each team displayed throughout the year speaks volumes about the wonderful personnel and structures that exist within the club.

One such individual who has been the backbone of the Atherton Roosters is their secretary and treasurer Darryl Day,

A-GRADE

THE Atherton Roosters AGrade side came into this season as one of the hot favourites to take out the CDRL premiership, and they justified that preseason hype as they took out the first three games of their 2019 campaign.

From that point forward, the Roosters’ regular season was ravaged with injury to key players which at times had an adverse effect on their consistency.

Despite that, they managed to get the majority of their squad back by the end of the season and began hitting their straps at the right time.

They finished in fifth position at the end of the regular season thus securing a finals berth – and there was a quiet confidence amongst Roosters players and fans alike that they could make a run and win it all.

Their performances in their wins over Cairns Brothers and the Yarrabah Seahawks in the finals series were extremely impressive, and it took a try in the 89th minute of the Qualifying Final to defending premiers the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks to end their season.

A-Grade coach Graham Clark Snr said the goal coming into the season was to finish in the top three.

“From that perspective we achieved our goals as we were just one game from making the grand final,” he said.

“I feel as though we were definitely good enough to win it however crucial mistakes at inopportune times cost us in the end.”

Clark Snr said the development of the squad over the course of the season was the most pleasing aspect this year.

“There were seven players missing from last year’s squad, so I was really happy with the chemistry we were able to build throughout the season,” he said.

“We started to gel from about the half-way point of the season onwards, so that consistent improvement shows that the playing group was dedicated to applying themselves at training and on game-day.

“We’re not a team of superstars, we’re a collective group of

whose work in promoting the club, garnering sponsorship and extensive involvement in the overall operation of the Roosters for more than 40 years is unparalleled in the Cairns District Rugby League competition.

Day said it’s the enormous work put in behind the scenes that has enabled the Roosters to experience such success in 2019.

“A large part of the credit has to go to the coaches,” he said.

“They have to deal with a lot of problems that people don’t see and the way all of our senior coaches were able to keep the teams together during this year was fantastic.”

Day said their accomplishments this year on the park

points to a significant culture shift at the club in recent years.

“It all started when we hit the milestone last year – I believe we were the first club in Queensland to reach 100 years,” he said.

“In addition, we employed Graham Clark Snr as our AGrade coach last year and he brought a degree of stability and a playing group that the club hadn’t seen in quite some time.

“Since Graham has been the coach, he has instilled a level of discipline and pride in the Roosters jumper that has filtered right through the club and that has made for a much greater culture.

“Because of that culture shift there are so many more people

who want to play for the Roosters so I can only see it improving as time goes on.”

Day noted that a major goal for the club this season was to get Reserve Grade back into the finals, a grade which has struggled in past years.

“That was a big emphasis for us and we’re really pleased to have achieved that,” he said.

“Trent did a great job as a player-coach and we’re confident that he’s keen to come back on board for next season which is promising.”

Day said he would like to thank everyone involved with the Atherton Roosters rugby league club and the community for their overwhelming support this year.

Clark Snr echoed much of Darryl Day’s comments as it relates to the improved culture at the club, citing a more community-minded approach as the reason behind it.

“The Tablelands is such a diverse region and we are trying our best at the club to bring it all under one banner,” he said.

“That is why a number of the people around the club place such an emphasis on getting the players out in the community and helping out whenever we can.

“That allows us to strengthen the ties between the community and the playing group.”

Clark Snr said he would like to thank the club for a wonderful year.

“I am so pleased to be a part of such a fantastic club and I am grateful for the opportunity to coach a group of great young men.”

Despite the abundance of talent the Roosters’ boasted on the offensive side of the ball, it was his side’s defence that Molloy was happiest with.

“I was impressed with our defence all year, particularly on our own line,” he said.

“Defence is an effort thing, so when we did that right it opened up space for some of our creative players to capitalise when we had the ball.

“So I feel as a team we had a fantastic balance.”

Molloy said he is expecting another strong year in 2020, with a number of this year’s players expressing their interest in returning.

“Most of the boys said they want to run around again next year and there are a few other new players who have said they’re interested in playing for Atherton which is great,” he said.

“So I can’t see any reason why we can’t do as well as we did this year or even go one better.”

In what was his first time as player-coach, Molloy said he would like to thank Graham Clark Snr and Sam Harreman for their assistance this year.

“The biggest aspect I tried to implement were the disciplines around rugby league, such as loyalty, character and resilience building, mateship and leaving a legacy.”

Harreman said a desire to leave a legacy at the club is an indication that the club is heading in the right direction.

“With the success of our AGrade and Reserve Grade sides this year, it’s fantastic to see a number of the juniors coming through talking about how they want to wear the Atherton

RESERVE GRADE

Reserve Grade experienced a wonderfully successful 2019, improving on their poor 2018 campaign which saw them finish towards the bottom of the CDRL table.

With a crop of fresh faces and some returning club veterans, the new-look Reserve Grade outfit managed to secure a second-place finish and a finals berth for the first time in a number of years.

With player-coach Trent Molloy at the helm, the Roosters were looking to build on their impressive regular season and make a deep run in the finals.

Unfortunately for them however, they lost back-to-back finals appearances in heartbreaking fashion, including a golden point loss the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks followed by a nail-biting four-point loss to Cairns Brothers which ultimately ended their season.

Molloy said while losing both finals games in such close affairs was disappointing, he noted that there are still plenty of positives to be taken from this season.

“I’m very happy as I’ve been with the Roosters since 2011 and I can’t remember Reserve Grade coming higher than second last,” he said.

“I was extremely confident right from the outset this year, as

UNDER 18s

THE strength of any rugby league club is dependent on the next generation of players, and the Atherton Roosters are fortunate to have an abundance of talented young players coming through the ranks.

That is evidenced by the success of their U18s outfit, who made the finals and showed extended patches of brilliance that will have the club’s Reserve Grade and A-Grade coaching staff very excited.

A large part of their success is due to their coach Sam Harreman, who made the move up to Atherton from South-East Queensland earlier this year.

Harreman has an extensive coaching resume that includes a number of well-performing junior representative sides spanning years, and he noted how proud he was to be able to coach the Atherton Roosters U18s in 2019.

“We had a massive year for development, we were struggling with numbers at the be-

Roosters jersey one day,” he said.

“And with the community involvement, education of the club’s coaches and pure investment that is put into their playing group, the Atherton Roosters are going to continue to go from strength to strength and that is something I’m extremely excited to be a part of.”

Harreman said he would like to thank the parents, players and everyone at the Atherton Roosters for contributing to such a successful season.

It caps of a phenomenal year for the 18-year-old, who also picked up the Cairns District Rugby League’s Rookie of the Year Award at their awards night recently.

“It’s a real honour to be named Gladiator of the Year,” he said.

“Being my first year, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I just made sure I gave 100 per cent effort every time I took to the field.

“Coming into this season I felt it was a great opportunity to expand and improve my game, and to be able to have as successful a season as I did in my

rookie year means a lot.

“It has me really excited for next season, the club feels more like a family now and we have a young squad coming through so there’s plenty of potential there.”

Dally said he would like to thank his mother for always being there and supporting him and Trent Barnard for providing him with the opportunity to play A-Grade this season.

THE Mareeba Bulls Under 13/14 all girls team became the first champions of the 2019 season with a scintillating performance to win the grand final against the Stratford Dolphins on Saturday morning at Endeavour Park.

The game was a tight affair in the first 25 minutes of the match with both teams trying to find their rhythm and get accustomed to the occasion.

It was then that the girls found their mojo as Amy Simonato slotted home a penalty to give the bulls a slender lead. The game then opened up and so did the flood gates.

Faith Walker and Jashana Jackson both added to the score to take the Bulls into a 3-0 half fine lead.

Stratford began the second half strongly and pulled a goal back to make it 3-1, but the young girls were not going to give this one up as they struck back immediately and took control of the match through Faith Walker who added another two to her first half goal to win the match 5-1 for the bulls.

Faith Walker was the standout on the day scoring a hat trick and collecting the “Most Valuable Player” of the finals award.

Later on Saturday afternoon the Mareeba Bulls youth under the watchful eye of Coach Luch Avolio clinched a berth in this year’s grand final in sweltering conditions at Tiger Park with a hard fought 2-0 win against the Edge Hill Tigers.

Milan Quintieri slotted home a penalty and Angelo Musso put the game beyond the Edge Hill Tigers late in the second half to book the team a spot in the grand final on Saturday, October 5.

“The boys knew they had to play well today to win, we really wanted that week off before the final so we could rest up,” said coach Luch Avolio.

Both teams struggled to dominate with numerous fouls and yellow cards the order of the day until the old war horse Damien Wildman again proving his worth to give Mareeba the lead.

The match took a dreadful turn in the second half with a sickening injury to Stratford Defender Raphael Milo who was taken to hospital with a suspected compound fracture.

When the match resumed an hour later it was Stratford who equalised through a soft penalty.

With less than a minute left in the match Luch Da Rocha sealed a late win with a scin-

tillating shot from outside the area to secure a finals berth.

“It almost went terribly wrong, but a credit to these boys who have already collected the premiership for this year and are now into the final, they really put it in tonight,” said coach Dennis Allen.

“We’ve had about 35 players play in this division throughout the year and they all need to be acknowledged.

The injury to Raphael was very unfortunate but we had to put that aside and concentrate on the task, that was a great shot from Luch to win the match.

“We don’t want to lose momentum going into the final so our training will be fairly intense, but the boys are up to it and are looking forward to the final in a couple of weeks.”

After a stellar season, the Mareeba Bulls ladies side unfortunately missed out on a grand final spot after going down 3-2 on Sunday againist the JCU Strikers.

The Men’s second division will play off for a finals berth against Atherton Eagles this Friday night after defeating Leichhardt 1-0 last Friday.
