MSHS shave for a good cause SOME Mareeba State High School students and staff said goodbye to their locks on Wednesday as they participated in the World’s Greatest Shave.

The initiative, which began in 1998, raises money to find a cure for blood cancers such as Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma among others.

One such student who participated this year was MSHS School Captain Ryan Paton.

“This is the first time I’ve participated in the World’s Greatest Shave, and while it feels a bit weird walking around with a bald head, I’m really glad to be a part of the initiative,” he laughed.

who have been affected by blood cancer, so I wanted to try and make a difference in any way I could.”

Ryan said his fundraising efforts exceeded his own expectations, and he noted that he would like to thank those who helped him during his donation drive.

“I initially was aiming to raise

around $300-400, however I was able to raise more than $500 which is awesome,” he said.

“Being in my final year of schooling, it means a lot to take part in such a worthwhile initiative and the support from the community has been great.

“I want to thank everyone who donated to the cause, par-

ticularly the businesses within the community who were very generous with their donations.”

Twins Renee and Stacey Edwards of Mount St Bernard College in Herberton both won a pretigious student Maths Award.

TWO Mount St Bernard students were recognised for their excellence in the field of mathematics recently after they won the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Maths Award, of which is part of the CSIRO Indigenous STEM Awards.

Twins Renee and Stacey Edwards, were rewarded for displaying passion, engagement and improvement in mathematics as well as demonstrating how they have used mathematics to solve a real-life problem.

Renee and Stacey, who are proud descendants of the Yidinji and Ngudjan nations, have been helping members of the Jirrbal People of Koombaloomb, Ravenshoe and Herberton areas to resist the placement of Wind Farms near sacred sites by using trigonometry.

They have also used maths to calculate ratios for chemicals and the potential returns for planting different types of produce on their family properties.

Renee and Stacey were ecstatic to come away with the award.

“We are very proud of our achievement and look forward to exploring the opportunities that we may have with a future in STEM,” they said.

“It was a surprise, we knew that we had been nominated but never expected to win it.”

Renee and Stacey noted what they love about STEM subjects and mathematics specifically.

We both have a passion for STEM, and have participated in the University of Queensland Indigenous STEM Summer Schools over the past two Christ-

mas Holidays,” they said.

“We like challenging ourselves through solving problems where the answer is not obvious at first.

“We like to use maths to solve everyday problems such as the problem we solved for these awards, and we both intend to study Maths Methods in Year 11 and 12 so that our options stay open for the future.”

Renee and Stacey said they would like to thank those who have played an integral role in their success.

“Over the past 10 years we have had many great Maths teachers,” they said.

“We would like to thank all our teachers from St Theresa Catholic School in Ravenshoe and Mount St Bernard Catholic College in Herberton.”

Local irrigation scheme to stay with SunWater OPERATIONS and maintenance of the Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme will remain with SunWater after it was assessed a transition to ownership and management by local irrigators was not in the best interests of locals and tax payers at the current time.

Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Deputy Director General of Water Linda Dobe said after consultation with local irrigators it was found there was not enough support to progress with a Local Management Arrangement.

“The extensive engagement with local irrigators and the community and the information collected have provided a deep understanding of the way in which these schemes operate and how they can improve,” Ms Dobe said.

“The process provided an opportunity for irrigators to take a close look at the complexities of operating irrigation schemes, and allowed for new thinking on ways of improving water efficiency.”

Ms Dobe said for transition to local management there

needed to be certainty about there being value for money in the transaction for tax payers, and significant user support there was not enough certainty on these criteria to progress to the next stage.

“The Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme is vital to this region’s agricultural industry – I look forward to seeing the continued long-term sustainability of the scheme,” Ms Dobe said.

“SunWater will continue to operate the scheme as it has for over the past two decades and will work closely with irrigators to establish a new Mareeba-Dimbulah customer engagement process.

“I thank the Mareeba LMA board which was established for this scheme, for their passionate contribution to this process, in particular the board Chair, Joe Moro.”

Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Council Chair Joe Moro said while he is disappointed with the decision, LMA were just unable to garner enough support from local irrigators.

“We put the most financially

strong proposal to government, however it was above what they were prepared to pay,” he said.

“And ultimately there wasn’t enough support from the irrigators to give government confidence to proceed.

“Many of the irrigators felt that SunWater was doing a good job, so they didn’t see the reasoning behind transitioning when there wasn’t going to be much difference in terms of price.”

Mr Moro said there’s a probability that they’ll look at this again in the future.

“At the end of the day, there might be changes in government policy that may impact irrigators, and as a result, LMA may become more accepted by the irrigators as a way forward to keep the price of water at the lowest possible cost,” he said.

“So it’s something that won’t be taken off the agenda for a long time yet.”

Mr Moro said LMA’s proposal highlighted the need for pipe replacements, of which SunWater disagreed.

“There’s a huge need for pipe replacements in the

scheme, which comes at a significant cost,” he said.

“So if a decision is made down the line that there in fact is a need for pipe replacements, that cost should come out of

THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) are calling on Mareeba and Dimbulah residents to express their interest in becoming a member of a local health interest group.

The group will work with CHHHS to provide advice on the delivery of local services, and are asking for individuals who are active in the community and are interested in healthcare.

Added to that, applicants are asked to have well-developed interpersonal skills, the ability to work as part of a team, be willing to provide advice to CHHHS, and be available for regular meetings for a twelve month period.

You also must be over 18 years of age, live locally and not be currently employed by the CHHHS. For those wanting to express their interest, they can do so by submitting a one-page letter that outlines your suitability to join the interest group.

THE Atherton Post Office has created history after they were named the inaugural Australia Post Office of the Year at a gala dinner held in Melbourne a fortnight ago.

The Atherton Post Office, which is located at Robert Street, Atherton, took out the top gong for their consistently outstanding performance across commercial results, customer service, community engagement and safety.

Atherton Post Office Manager Wendy Wyatt said the award came as a welcome surprise.

“It’s amazing recognition for the work that we do and something we definitely didn’t expect,” she said.

“We’re all very dedicated to our jobs and every one of us loves coming to work here.”

Ms Wyatt said she believes their community-focused approach is a major reason as to why they were named the first

Principal Mark Allen said the school has a number of strong interagency relationships, one of which is the local police force.

“We have a great relationship with local police, as many officers play an integral role in ensuring safety in our school and within the community,” he said.

“A lot of officers have children at our school, so they are active on our P&C; some come

along on school camps and many participate in a number of our events.”

Mr Allen said the school’s long history with the Adopt-ACop program is one that is beneficial to everyone involved.

Federal funding secures sealing of Peninsula Development Road

The federal government will invest $190 million towards the Peninsula Development Road – Stage Two Project – to ensure sealing works along the ‘bucket list’ road continue.

The Peninsula Development Road has been listed as part of the federal government’s $3.5 billion Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.

This announcement is part of a wider $730 million Northern Queensland Roads Package announcement that was made last week by Federal Northern Australia Minster Matt Canavan.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the announcement follows extensive consultation with local stakeholders and was an acknowledgement the federal government had listened and acted on the concerns of all Cape York communities.

He said he had fought tooth and nail to ensure this crucial funding would be delivered ahead of the federal election.

“This game-changing project has been a one of many firsts,” Mr Entsch said.

“It has provided widespread employment and training opportunities for many indigenous people and businesses throughout Cape York.

“It has also significantly improved access to Cape York for freight, tourists and other road users – it has literally opened up

the region to the world but more importantly, improved the way of life for countless Cape York residents.”

Mr Entsch said stage two would involve the continued sealing of the remaining 210km to the Weipa turnoff and would also involve crossings at the Archer and North Laura Rivers.

He said local stakeholders along each corridor and other levels of government would be consulted further on what projects should be prioritised.

“Having Cape York cut-off, like what is currently occurring, due to weather events every year is simply not acceptable,” he said.

“The current situation where the road is cut-off for two weeks really highlights the needs to continue with, and accelerate, these works.

“More importantly, the continued sealing of the PDR will also give Cape York and Torres Strait communities’ better access to affordable fresh fruit, vegetables and household goods, something I know is a major issue for many residents across these regions.”

North Queensland Civil Construction Association President Phil Cassel said the $190 million announcement would be another major boost for regional infrastructure and Cape York economies.

“The association has worked very closely with the Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch over the past four years to ensure this project realised its full potential.

“Warren has been absolutely instrumental in delivering this project for Cape York.

“He has also very closely

monitored the delivery and outcomes of this game-changing project to ensure Cape York business did not miss out.”

Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance (TCICA) board member and Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said the Peninsula Development Road was the key arterial for Cape York and recent events have shown how crucial this route is to many communities.

“We absolutely welcome this funding, in particular, the planned bridge works over the Archer and North Laura Rivers which en-

sures the accessibility to a large and important area which Coen is the centre,” Mr Scott said.

“This additional funding will provide many people and small businesses across the region opportunities for work and to further enhance and build on their skills.

“This funding is also key to health, economic and social wellbeing of all Cape York and Torres Strait communities.

“We have had preliminary discussions with Queensland Transport and Main Roads and there is a real focus moving forward on

access roads to the communities to ensure they are able to connect to the Peninsula Development Road.”

Mr Entsch said he expected the Queensland Government would contribute its 20 per cent towards stage two when its budget is handed down in June, 2019.

The federal government has already invested $208.4 million in the Peninsula Development Road – State One Project – with the majority of works either finished or nearing completion.

Motel looks to boost tourism THE Atherton Tablelands could be the beneficiary of a significant boost in tourism in the near future after the Atherton Motel’s proposal to add ten rooms to their site was passed at a Tablelands Regional Council meeting last week.

The proposed development, which is set to increase the Atherton Motel’s number of rooms from 18 to 28, is aimed at capitalising on the prolific bus and coach market in an attempt to bring more tourists to the region.

Atherton Motel owner and operator Robert Monk said the tourism industry on the Atherton Tablelands has struggled since coach companies ceased operations on the Tablelands more than two years ago.

“The proposal really started to gain momentum when our competitors here in Atherton began operating as backpacker ac-

commodation,” he said.

“One motel in particular that moved to complete backpacker accommodation was previously the only provider in town that could handle bus coaches.

“And because of their switch, coach companies have avoided coming to Atherton which has had a detrimental impact on the region’s tourism industry and economy.”

The catalyst for Mr Monk’s development proposal was that bus and coach companies traditionally like to work with motel’s that have 24 rooms or more, and he is strongly of the belief that this proposal will provide for a gap in the market that will be valuable for the entirety of the region.

“This is just not about helping our own business,” he said.

“There are so many wonderful businesses and natural icons in this part of the country that

can make this area a real drawcard for tourists.

“Everything from the Crystal Caves to the Herberton Historic Village, the lakes to the waterfalls - there’s so much to do here and we need to take advantage of that.

“And this development will give guests a fantastic base to stay and experience all the awesome things within 20-30 minutes of Atherton.”

While a strong point of emphasis for Mr Monk is securing a reliable bus and coach market on the Tablelands, he also wants to tap into the self-drive market.

“If we do a good job at promoting the coach tours and ensure it reaches a lot of potential tourists, there will be quite a few people who choose to do the tours by driving themselves,” he said.

“This will in turn have its own benefits, as they are likely

to stay longer and spend plenty of money.

“Therefore having both a coach and self-drive market will mean every retail outlet within the community will reap the benefits – it’s absolutely a win-win for everyone involved.”

Mr Monk noted that the proposal is part of a three-year plan, and he said it’s one that he hopes can come to fruition with help from the Tablelands Regional Council.

“What we put forward to Council was to see what sort of assistance a company that is looking to promote the whole area can receive,” he said.

“And given that they approved it today, it appears as though they want to help.”

“However, there’s still a process we need to go through to see what kind of assistance they can provide us and that will be discussed over the coming weeks.”

Savannah Way receives $50M boost The federal government is investing a further $50 million to improve an iconic tourist route between Tropical North Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The funding will go towards sealing the unsealed sections of the Gulf Savannah Way, which has been identified through the federal government’s $3.5 billion Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.

The Queensland section of the Gulf Savannah Way takes in 313km with almost 60 per cent of the road already sealed.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said once the Queensland section of the road is fully sealed it would improve flood resilience and provide increased economic opportunities to many regional communities along the route.

He said this funding was made available because he had listened, acted and delivered for the community.

“Large segments of the road remain unsealed and flood prone, isolating communities during the wet season and limiting the economic value of this critical northern road link,” Mr Entsch said.

“On completion, the sealed road will improve flood resilience, support local communities, improve tourism opportunities and increase agricultural prosperity.

“The works will include pavement upgrade, bitumen sealing, minor realignments of substandard curves, concrete causeways and upgrades to four major river crossings, in the Carpentaria, Burke and Doomadgee Shires” Mr Entsch said the complete

sealing of the Gulf Savannah Way would be a 10 year project and it would result in jobs and opportunities for small businesses.

Mr Entsch said he expected the Queensland Government would contribute its 20 per cent towards this project when its budget is handed down in June, 2019.

“This is a great result for our region and I would like to thank Advance Cairns for their unwavering commitment and advocacy toward this much-needed project,” he said.

“This route is another ‘bucket item’ in our backyard and once the works are completed it will open up our region to a new tourism market, similar to what is already happening with the Peninsula Development Road in Cape York.”

Advance Cairns CEO Nick Trompf said the organisation had been advocating strongly for the sealing of the Queensland section of the Gulf Savannah Way for several years.

Mr Trompf said Advance Cairns also fully welcomed the $190 million announced today for the Peninsula Development Road – State Two Project.

“A fully-sealed Gulf Savannah Way will unlock economic growth across the top of Australia by allowing thousands of travellers’ safe passage and in faster time from Cairns to Broome,” he said.

“The existing road is flood prone and faces regular closure during the wet season, adversely impacting a range of industries.

“The federal government

has long promoted a Northern Australia agenda and the Gulf Savannah Way – stretching 3700km from the east coast to the west coast of the nation – is a signature project in that sense.

“We will now be looking to the Queensland Government to step up with supporting funding to match the federal contribution.

“The intent is the road upgrade in north-west Queensland will be staged over a number of years to allow local contractors to complete the works, therefore maximising jobs and direct economic benefit to the region.”

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor and Deputy Chair IQ-RAP Working Group Tom Gilmore said he welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement to invest $730 million to seal and upgrade roads in North Queensland, including the Hann Highway and Savannah Way. “This certainly shows what can be achieved when regional stakeholders work collaboratively,” he said.

“However, this didn’t happen overnight, it has taken many years of hard work to achieve this great outcome.”

“In 2013, Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland believed there was an opportunity for attracting more investment into inland Queensland roads through greater cross-regional collaboration and held forums to engage with key stakeholders.”

Cr Gilmore said the resulting alliance of local governments, Regional Road Transport Groups, Regional Development Australia

$50 million has been allocated to improve the iconic tourist route Savannah Way.

Committees and RACQ across most of inland Queensland, led to the development of the Inland Queensland Roads Action Plan in 2016.

“In mid-2018, we updated the plan and launched the Inland Queensland Road Network Strategy, providing a strategic, long-term approach to prioritising road investment to achieve more local jobs, better safety and productivity outcomes,” he said.

“I would like to personally thank all involved in supporting this strategic approach to road funding and regional economic development.”

Mareeba palliative care room officially open

THE Blue Care Mareeba Garden Settlement officially opened its dedicated palliative care room last Monday.

The room, which is courtesy of funding provided by the Granite Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pocket the charity of Freemasons QLD, will now provide care for those with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

The official opening consisted of a plaque unveiling and a morning tea for residents, staff and

members of the Granite Masonic Lodge.

Blue Care North Queensland General Manager Liz Brown thanked the Granite Masonic Lodge and Hand Heart Pocket while highlighting how the room will provide a continuation of Blue Care’s commitment to holistic care.

Biodiversity incentives for Far North Farmers

Far North Queensland farmers will eventually be able to receive financial incentives for managing the biodiversity on their farms.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said a $30 million pilot program would pay farmers for improving biodiversity on their farms, and in appropriate cases also for carbon.

He said $4 million would also be invested in an accreditation scheme to give farmers a biodiversity stamp which would be recognised nationally and internationally.

“Far North Queenslanders are extremely passionate about our local environment so it makes perfect sense for farmers to receive financial incentives for looking after biodiversity,” Mr Entsch said.

“Countless farmers across Far North Queensland are currently doing this for free and they deserve something for that.

“If you have fenced off bush on your property and you are not running crops or stock on it then

you are doing something for our nation’s biodiversity and deserve financial reward.

“Farmers love nature and they are also running a business – these policies recognise both these realities.

“I will be strongly arguing for properties in our region to be included in this pilot trial.

Mr Entsch said the biodiversity accreditation stamp would give our FNQ farmers who are looking after the biodiversity on their farm a way to receive an extra dollar for it when they sell either here or overseas.

“We want this stamp recognised overseas – biodiversity is important in several overseas markets and we need to continue to be known for our clean, green produce,” he said.

Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said participating farmers would receive incentives for a range of projects to improve biodiversity on farms.

He said examples of this could include maintaining or enhancing remnant forest, regen-

eration of gullies or waterways, or mixed species native tree plantings.

“I have always thought farmers should be rewarded for the biodiversity on their properties and this could become a droughtproof income stream for them,” Mr Littleproud said.

“These programs will be trailed across different commodities and in different regions and if successful, I hope it will be expanded.

“An on-farm biodiversity policy and methodology will need to be developed and we’ll be consulting with Australian National University and farm groups on this.

“In the future we could potentially see farmers receiving payment for both biodiversity and carbon benefits from the same project.

“I am offering a carrot to farmers who look after biodiversity and absorb carbon, not additional and unnecessary regulation which is what Labor will introduce if elected.”

Little Nate receives positive scan results Nate Moule is back home in Mareeba after receiving positive results from a scan in Cairns last month.

WHEN The Express last spoke with the Moule family, Nate (2) had recently returned to Mareeba and was recovering from an operation he underwent in Sydney which successfully removed his brain tumour.

Having spent the last six weeks at home in Mareeba surrounded by family and friends, Nate travelled to Cairns for a scan on February 27.

The results of the scan showed no tumour reoccurrence.

Nate’s mother Katie was ecstatic and relieved with the results.

“Charlie Teo has given us a chance no other surgeon would have,” she said.

“Our next scan is on May 1 and after that scan we will be flying to Sydney to see Charlie and make a decision on what to do next.”

While Ms Moule is optimistic about the findings of the scan, she understands the complexity

of Nate’s condition.

“Nate definitely isn't out of the woods yet but he is as cheeky and happy as any other nearthree year old,” she said.

“And we want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us.”

To raise money for Nate’s ongoing expenses along with the Charlie Teo Foundation, the Nate’s Mates Great Wheelbarrow Race team will be hosting a mega cent sale.

The sale will include an auction as well as over 100 prizes on offer, of which includes accommodation vouchers, fuel vouchers, a reef trip, a Sugarworld voucher among many others.

The mega cent sale will also consist of food, sweets and a raf-

fle, and anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to pre-purchase tickets from Mareeba News from April 1.

The sale will be held at the Mareeba Swimming Pool on April 27 and will start at 4pm.

Every year in Australia, almost 800 kids are diagnosed with cancers, many of them aggressive, hard to treat and with high risk of mortality.

Lions have been helping kids for the last 40years.

But now, with the help of scientific breakthroughs in genetics, we are taking these efforts to a whole new level.

The Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation have committed $4million to fund the whole genome sequencing of 400 children with high risk cancers in Australia over 3 years.

This funding will enable the Children’s Cancer Institute to undertake the sequencing, analysis and the creation of a database which can be used by researchers and doctors worldwide.

Mareeba Lions Club has over the last 6 donated over $20, 0000.00 to Childhood Cancer Research, money raised through the Family Friendly Metrogaine to be held again this year on the 16th June.

Club members recently enjoyed a celebration dinner on the 60th anniversary of the Club receiving its charter from Lions International. A number of visiting Lions District Cabinet members, former members and members from surrounding towns attended the dinner at the Leagues Club. Mayor Councillor Tom Gilmore proposed a toast to Lions Clubs International, and

the Federal Member for Kennedy Mr Bob Katter MP presented Mr Mick Borzi AM OBE with a certificate on behalf of the club in recognition of the Clubs 60 years of service to the community.

Mareeba High School year 11 student Gamuchirai Makoti was recently successful at the Zone Final of the Lions Youth of the Year and competed at the District final in Townsville. Although not winning the stage Gamuchirai acquitted herself well against some very stiff competition.

MAREEBA Lions are hosting a Clean Up Australia Day event in Mareeba this Saturday, April 6. The Clean Up day will kick off at 8.30am at the old Barron River Bridge (Herberton Street) and everyone is invited to come along and help clean up the area.

All in attendance will help clean up this area of Mareeba with rubbish bags, pick up tongs and gloves supplied.

Following the event the Lions will put on a free sausage sizzle and water will also be provided on the morning.

The annual bowls night is held each year and alternates between Mareeba and Dimbulah, with this years event held in Dimbulah at the Dimbulah Bowls Club on Friday night.

School culture is a vital component of student learning. Behaviours have continued to be better at Mareeba State High School.

Mareeba State High School students and staff commemorated “Bullying. No Way” day last week, in the hopes of bringing attention to the fact that bullying can be stopped through individual action.

The Student Council encouraged students to pledge against bullying, and to show their support for those who are the target for bullies, to let them know they are not alone. Hazel Bensted, our Guidance Officer, involved all students in an awareness task where they could individually pledge against bullies.

This has followed a 59% reduction from 2017 – 2018 figures. Suspensions have also fallen by 30% this term. That is another big reduction after a 59% fall in 2018. The work done

by Staff and Students to continue to develop a strong learning culture is having a positive effect.

Attendance has seen a drop over the term. We are 1.2% behind where we were last year:

Congratulations to 2018 MSHS School Captain Joshua Theakston, for being awarded the TJ Ryan Scholarship. Up to ten TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarships are awarded each year to support exemplary Queensland students to pursue tertiary studies.

Joshua was awarded this scholarship due to his outstanding leadership in the school and community, and his academic excellence. He will receive up to $10,000 over five years to assist with his tertiary expenses.

Joshua is currently studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at The University of Queensland.

Three TJ Ryan medals have been awarded to Mareeba State High School students in four years, an amazing result unmatched by any school in Queensland.

Year 11 student, Gamu Makoti was declared the Overall winner of the Regional & Zone Finals of the Lions Youth of the Year competition recently.

Gamu travelled to Townsville for the District Final of the competition on 23rd March. This was only one step removed from the State Final and was a very high level of competition.

Although Gamu did not win, she represented our school and herself in an admirable way.

SCHOOL-BASED POLICE OFFICER As the newly appointed School Based Police Officer, it was great to be welcomed into the school at the whole school parade on Tuesday 26th March 2019. I have worked as both a Police Prosecutor and Detective on the Tablelands for the past twelve years, prior to coming to this role. I am one of 56 School Based Police Officers appointed across the State. The School Based Officer role was created in 2005 as part of a joint initiative between Education Queensland and the Queensland Police Service.

I will be working with the Mareeba State High School’s Student Support Team as a policing resource to work collaboratively with the school community to provide support

to students and staff. I look forward to working with the school community into the future. I see my role as a great opportunity to ensure that the school and the local community continues to be a safe place, where children can thrive and learn.

Community wears yellow for blood donation drive THE Mareeba, Tablelands and Cairns community donned yellow on Friday and Saturday in support of Gia’s “Yellow” Day Party donation drive.

The drive was held at the Cairns Blood Donor Centre and was courtesy of ‘Generosity 4 Gia’ in conjunction with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, and will go a long way in providing Gia Smith and other deserving children with muchneeded whole blood and plasma donations.

Others who couldn’t give blood joined in the party by dressing in yellow for the two days.

Angus Campman was awarded the Mareeba Cricket Junior Cricketer of the Year, Janelle Smithwick received the Ladies Cricketer of the Year and Brendan Payne was named the Senior Cricketer of the Year receiving the John Henry Memorial Trophy for Cricketer of The Year. Gladiators hold on to win nail-biter THE Gladiators snuck home in a thriller in the reserve grade fixture on Saturday.

Mareeba’s performance was a far cry from their mistakeriddled pre-season outing a fortnight prior, as they showed discipline, creativity and resolve when it was needed most.

The visitors managed to keep their lead and were in a strong position at the main break as they lead 12-0.

As the second half commenced, the Roosters needed to be the next to score, and they did just that to limit the deficit to just a converted try.

The home side gained momentum in the final quarter of the game and scored again with less than 15 minutes left in the

game to trail 12-10.

The final ten minutes was a nail-biter for both set of supporters as the Roosters had a mountain of possession on the Gladiators line.

In the final minute of the match, the Roosters appeared to have an overlap on the left hand side, however were unable to score due to the Gladiators stout defence.

In what was quite a fiery affair, the Gladiators held on admirably to win 12-10.

Roosters dominate in under 18’s match

THE U18s match-up was a tale of two halves with a dominant second half performance from the Atherton Roosters being the difference between the two sides.

Both teams struggled to gain ascendency in the opening stages of the match as neither side could control the ball in what was very muddy conditions.

That was until the Roosters struck first thanks to a barnstorming run from their lock forward Ethan Wyatt with 11 minutes remaining in the half.

The Gladiators immediately

hit back a few minutes later through a try to their five-eighth Isaiah Bowen who split the Roosters defence with a vintage show and go.

It appeared that the Roosters would take a narrow 6-4 lead into the halftime break, however Roosters centre Kiefhar Rosas used his size and athleticism to beat three would-be defenders and score under the sticks with three minutes left, giving the home side a 12-4 buffer at the break.

It would be Kiefhar’s first of

three tries for the match.

The Roosters were able to take that momentum they gained late in the first half and continue it in the second stanza, as their play was clinical and far more disciplined.

The Gladiators on the other hand continued to be plagued by poor execution.

The Roosters ran in five tries in the second half, three of which was scored by their fullback Darcy Gillespie.

In the the end the Roosters were victorious 36-4.

Mixed start to 2019 for Mareeba Bulls IT was a case of deja vu for the Mareeba Bulls on Saturday night at home as they came up against last year’s grand final winners, Edge Hill United. It was the Bulls first outing for the season as they attempt to make an impact on the FNQ Football Premiership.

For the second consecutive week the home side conceded five goals during the course of the match, much to the dismay of Coach Perry Krakowczyk whose team has still not found the balance needed between the defense and midfield, while individuals struggle with composure and confidence in front of goal.

“Again we conceded some silly goals in the second half,” said coach Krakowczyk.

“Even though we went into the break a goal down I was confident we would come back, but when we came out in the second half we were playing in la la land

It was a wet night in Mareeba on Saturday as the Bulls premier side went down 5-2 to the Edge Hill Tigers.

– we weren’t ready to come on.

“After the third goal the heads dropped and there was no coming back. “The body language said it all, the belief wasn’t there.

“Then all of a sudden we started to play. Even at 3-1 down I thought we had a chance because the conditions were not the best and with a bit of luck we could get something out of the game – but to no avail.

“We have to keep working harder and the results will come.”

In other grades, Reserve coach Nicholas Tallarico was upbeat as his team posted a convincing 4-1 win against the Edge Hill Tigers.

“It was very important to start with a win,” said Tallarico.

“It sets the pace for the rest of the season, the three points are very important early on, the boys were confident going into the match and while it took a little

time to get into a rhythm we dug deep and go into this weekends match full of confidence.”

The ladies Premier Division match was abandoned after 57 minutes due to a deluge of rain which descended on Borzi Park, but because the match finished three minutes short of an official time, the match will have to be replayed even though the lady bulls were a goal behind.

Earlier Luciano Avolio’s Youth side played out a 1-1 draw, while on Friday night the premier reserve ladies had a terrific start to their season with a comfortable 6-1 win over the Stratford Dolphins. The Bulls Second division side took home just one point from their 3-3 draw against the Edge Hill Tigers.

The Bulls are at home again this Saturday night in all grades as they take on the Innisfail Cutters.

Bulls to host free junior coaching clinics YOUNG footballers between the ages of six and fourteen will have the opportunity to hone their skills next week as the Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) will be holding free development clinics.

The school holiday clinics will be run by MUFC technical director Alex Srhoj, who holds an FFA C licence senior and youth coaching certificate.

The three-hour clinics are aimed at allowing kids to par-

ticipate in exercise during the school holidays all while further developing their individual skill and overall football ability.

There will be three clinics held throughout next week, of which are on Monday, April 8

(6, 7 and 8 year-olds), Tuesday, April 9 (9, 10 and 11 year-olds), and Wednesday, April 10 (12, 13 and 14 year-olds).

All three days will run from 1:30-4:30pm.

Roosters win first local derby of 2019 THE Atherton Roosters have drawn first blood in the Tableland Cup after defeating the Mareeba Gladiators in atrocious conditions at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

It was an unfortunate start for the Gladiators as a mistake in the opening minutes gifted the Roosters prime field position.

The Roosters were first to put points on the board through a slick backline play that allowed winger Reece Munster to score in the corner.

The Roosters continued that momentum throughout the ma-

jority of the first half as they ran out to a commanding 26-0 lead in just over a half hour of play.

In spite of Atherton’s early dominance, the Gladiators kept their slim chances of mounting a comeback alive when their outside back Eze Harper showed plenty of speed and light feet to score with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

The second-half started out fiery, as both sides were reduced to 11 men after the Roosters lost their halves pairing and the Gladiators lost their five-eighth and strike centre to the sin bin for an altercation.

That didn’t deter the home side however, as they were the first to score in the second half, making for an unassailable 32-6 lead.

Despite their struggles, the Gladiators showed they’ll be a team to be reckoned with when they’re firing on all cylinders as two late tries to centre Trent Barnard and winger Josh Adu displayed the enormous talent they boast when given time and space.

A try to the Roosters with less than 5 minutes to go sealed a 3614 win.

Boxers At War 4 a resounding success TABLELANDS boxing fans were treated to a fan-friendly night of the sweet science on Saturday as the Bryde’s Boxers At War 4 took place at the Mareeba Sports Hall.

There were ten bouts on the evening across the junior and senior divisions, and Bryde’s Boxing Gym Mareeba owner and operator Wayne Bryde said the tournament was a resounding success.

“Tonight’s event was exceptional; we had a great crowd on hand that included people from across the Tablelands and Cairns, so it was pleasing to see so much support for this,” he said.

“I can’t fault the night, the quality of the fights were unbelievable and the judging and refereeing was very good.

“Tonight’s success will mean I can hopefully host a similar event in August which is great.”

Bryde noted two fights which stood out on the night, as Mareeba local Malcolm Green took out the main junior bout while Michael Lees reigned victorious in the much-anticipated main event.

“Malcolm put on a wonderful performance tonight,” Bryde said.

“The first round was a close one however he dug deep and came home really strong in the final two rounds.

“I also want to recognise his coach Lance Costello, he did a fantastic job preparing him for this fight and that showed in Malcolm’s performance.”

Bryde said the main bout had everyone in the crowd on the edge of their seats.

“The main event exceeded expectations,” he said.

“It was such a good standard that it is a fight I would pay to watch again.

“They left it all in the ring and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to finish off Boxers At War 4.”

The main bout ended with a unanimous decision victory to Michael Lees over Raymond Cuppitt.

Lees said he was happy with his overall performance.

“Leading up to the fight I knew the quality fighter I was up against, so I made sure I trained as much as I could in preparation for tonight,” he said.

“I was pleased with my ability to fight off the back foot and counter his combinations as he came forward.

“He’s a tough competitor and it was great to have the opportunity to share the ring with him.”
