Coming off the back of the news that Mareeba is the second most romantic town in Australia, Shani and Jarod Wiggins believe that love really is in the air in Mareeba.

“Jarod was one of my brother’s friends growing up, so he was always around. I moved away to the Cairns northern beaches for a while and when I came back we just rekindled our friendship which led to love in our late 20’s. Now we have two beautiful daughters, Ava and Reese,” said Shani.

“We chose to get married on our own rural property in September last year at sunset – making for very romantic setting.”

Shani believes that Mareeba is romantic. “There’s just so many quiet places around here that you can just sit and chat and get to know somebody.”

With Valentine’s Day this Friday, Shani and Jarod are planning on staying home.

“Our Valentine’s Day plan is to have quiet dinner at home with a few beers.”

HELP: Support of the Mareeba Animal Refuge fundraiser will help animals like Bonny and Nevada who were re-homed by the Refuge.

Fundraiser for the animals FRIENDS of the Animals, who run the Mareeba Animal Refuge, are hoping to raise money for operating costs and new facilities at a fundraiser this weekend.

The first fundraiser of the year will be at Tableland Hardware, 26 James Street, Mareeba on Saturday, February 15, from 8.30am to 1pm.

There will be a sausage siz-

zle, microchipping for $20 dollars and a dog wash for only $10 dollars.

In addition there is a monthly stall at Mareeba Markets selling bric-a-brac and entries in the popular $100 board.

Friends of the Animals are also seeking monetary donations which are tax deductible.

RETIRED Atherton Sergeant Bernie Wilce was a very proud father when he went to his son’s graduation at the Townsville Police Academy on January 16.

His son, Leland Wilce, was sworn in by Tablelands Patrol group Inspector Russell Rhodes.

Leland will now spend the next 12 months based in Cairns as a Trainee Constable.

TABLELANDS farmers are known for their inventiveness.

One highly productive inventor amongst us is John Sinclair, a long-time resident and inventor in Far North Queensland.

John’s latest invention is a standard wheelchair retro-fitted with a small electric motor and battery. John claims his small motor will cost a fraction of the price of a normal motorised wheelchair.

John came to the attention of Startup and Innovation Tablelands (ST) when he brought in a selection of his inventions to the Australian Future Agro Challenge (AusFAC).

John has created a long list

of mechanical and electrical devices in the course of his also long and very fruitful life.

John’s inventive mind went into high gear one day as he helped an older woman who had successfully pushed her husband along in his wheelchair on the flat only to be stymied in their forward motion by the slightest of inclines.

His next thought was that a tiny electric booster might not power up a wheelchair to high speeds but it might be just the thing for slow progress especially on inclines.

As for what drives him to invent John said “When I see a problem, my mind tends to fig-

ure out a way to overcome it.”

“The initial solution is rarely the final one as ideas develop during the invention and refinement process. In fact, usually my designing is done lying in bed, visualising.”

At 86 years of age John is not interested in a new business, but he would like to see someone take on his invention and produce more retrofit kits, so that people in need can have an affordable, slightly soupedup version of their old wheelchair.

Robbie Katter takes the reins of the KAP KATTER’S Australia Party announced last week that Robbie Katter would be taking the reins of the off his father Bob Katter who founded the party in 2011.

Robbie Katter, who is also the State Member for Traeger, said he had been eager to inject himself into the political game at a high level.

“I’ve been champing at the bit, waiting to unleash, and now I’ve been passed the ball I’m ready to run through the gap,” Robbie Katter said.

“Australian politics needs street fighters and we will continue that effort.

“Queensland needs someone not to talk about the Bradfield Scheme but to build it.

“Under new leadership we will steam roll October’s State

Elections and come out in a position of influence.

Outgoing KAP leader and Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter said it was time Robbie stepped up to the plate and forcefully took the Party leadership.

“To our enemies, this will free up time for me to go after your heads, and to ensure this nation is built the way it was meant to be built,” Bob Katter Jnr. said.

“We may be going through the worst period of unfairness since the First World War. Member for Hill Shane Knuth, who has a long-standing history with both Robbie and Bob, said he’d seen Robbie come a long way since playing Rugby League with him in the 90s.

Its believed that Parliament has approved the move in principal but was yet to approve or announce the address for the new office.

IT’S been revealed that on January 20, Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore convened a round-table meeting with Member for Cook Ms Cynthia Lui and Queensland Police Service, Department of Youth Justice and Child Safety to address the community perception of an increase in juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour in the Shire.

“Following expressions of concerns from the community at what appears to be an increasing level in juvenile crime in the community, I called a meeting with Ms Lui, law enforcement and child safety departments to seek clarity on the situation and a sensible response,” Cr Gilmore said.

Mayor Gilmore acknowledged that the matters are a State Government responsibility. “However the meeting was called to make representations on behalf of the community about concerns expressed to us about the perceived increase in juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour in Mareeba.

“Ms Lui has agreed to convene a second meeting with a view of a whole-of-Government response to the issues arising” A second date has yet to be set.

Barra season is here

Mareeba RSL building one step closer to being sold IN what has been a long 18 months, it looks like the old Mareeba RSL building may finally be getting a new owner.

Damon Falvo from Mareeba Property Office confirmed that the building “was under contract subject to conditions.”

“Once all the conditions are met, settlement should be confirmed within the next few months.”

The RSL club closed in July 2018 due to financial problems

and the premises at Byrnes Street has remained empty ever since.

Damon Falvo couldn’t confirm what the future plans are for the building “at this stage I’m not privy to what the future plans are for the site,” “But once all the conditions and stipulations are met, it will be good news for the site and good news for our town, hopefully something good will come out of it.”

Queensland anglers are gearing up for barramundi season which re-opened on Friday, 1 February.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district manager Tony Loader reminded fishers to check the size and possession limits that apply to the iconic Queensland species when the season opens.

“It’s important that fishers refresh their knowledge of the rules and regulations before dropping a line to avoid being fined,” Mr Loader said.

“The minimum size limit for barramundi on the east coast and Gulf of Carpentaria is 58 cm, the maximum size limit is 120 cm and the possession limit is five fish per person.

“For those fishing in some of Queensland’s stocked freshwaters, one barramundi may be taken if it is greater than 120 cm.”

Closed seasons have been in place for barramundi since October 7, 2019 in the Gulf of Carpentaria and on the east coast since 1 November.

Mr Loader said annual closures apply to barramundi fishing to ensure the longterm sustainability of the fish species.

“The closed seasons which coincide with spawning periods protect barramundi stocks during this vulnerable time in their life cycle.

“This allows the fish to spawn and replenish to ensure healthy fish stocks for current and future generations of Queenslanders.”

Upgrades to start on TRC water supply Tablelands Region Council’s ongoing commitment to improving water quality and reliability is taking a big step forward this month.

“We will be commissioning upgrades to the water supply scheme in Atherton, which will reduce the frequency of boil water notices around Atherton, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire scheme,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“The commissioning of the new pipes and booster stations will start the week of February

17 and residents in the Ravenshoe Road, Hastie Road and Carrington areas may experience variations in water pressure, taste, smell and colour for several days as the system normalises.

“Our staff will monitor the network and do what they can to minimise impacts to residences.

“If the variations continue for more than three days, please get in touch with us.

“Once commissioning is complete and water quality requirements are met, we will contact the residents in the Ra-

venshoe Road, Hastie Road and Carrington areas about lifting their boil water notices.

“This will be a great relief for these residents and you’ll probably hear our staff cheering as well.

“It’s only the first step in our long water improvements journey — but it is a welcome one,” said Mayor Paronella.

TABLELANDS resident Jo Barnes’ idea for an official set of local library health and wellbeing resources became a reality this week.

Tablelands Libraries and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Library and Knowledge Centre launched a new ‘Far North Wellbeing’ website containing over 100 health and wellbeing resources February 5.

The website www.farnorthwellbeing.org.au will link to online health information, mobile apps and library books and resources focussed on health and wellbeing.

Ms Barnes heard about the idea at a Health Consumers Queensland Forum and suggested the website and resources to the Health Service Consumer Consultative Committee meeting run by Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service.

“Mayor Joe Paronella was at that meeting and was very sup-

portive,” said Ms Barnes.

“I then went and spoke to the library and they thought it was a wonderful idea.”

“It’s an initiative between hospital staff and our library to provide books and resources to people when they have particular illnesses,” said Ms Barnes.

“The library staff can now help members of the public find books and resources that have been endorsed by health professionals.”

Health Service Library Manager Juliet Marconi said that her team liaised with health staff to ensure that the Far North Wellbeing resources were trustworthy for patients and their families.

“We worked with doctors and nurses to choose health resources that are reliable and appropriate for people managing common health conditions,” said Ms Marconi.

the initiative follows a successful Words for Wellbeing model developed by Ipswich and Redlands Regional Council libraries, “The Far North Wellbeing allows people to browse collections on the website and then borrow the resources from their local Tablelands library,” said Mayor Paronella.

“In addition, the website will guide members of the community to reliable online consumer health information including mobile apps.

“It’s a fantastic set of resources for local residents.

“We’ve invested $3,500 in new health books and resources that have been endorsed by doctors and nurses from the local health service,” said Mayor Paronella.

This project will potentially expand to other libraries in the Cairns and Hinterland regions.

Ravenshoe cafe explosion inquest continues IN June 2015, 20 people were hospitalised after a ute crashed into a busy café Ravenshoe, causing a gas explosion and fireball, killing mother of two Nicole Nyholt, 37, and Margaret Clark, 82.

A coronial inquest into the explosion is currently taking place in Atherton, where a witness told the inquest that she saw the driver of “the utility smile and nod moments before he lost control and crashed into the building.”

It’s believed that Brian Scutt, was behind the wheel of his

four-wheel drive when he suffered a seizure and crashed into two gas bottles at the back of the Serves You Right Cafe at Ravenshoe.

The inquest is examining a range of factors, including whether Mr Scutt was fit to hold a driver's licence and whether medical practitioners should be required by law to report to Queensland Transport if they believe a patient is unfit to drive.

Witness Veronica Featherstone – Mr Scutt's friend of 20 years – told the court she was unaware of Mr Scutt's medical

condition.

She said he accidentally called her twice on the morning of the crash instead of his wife saying “I’m sick, I feel really sick” “He sounded sick on the phone … he was flustered.”

Both Mr Scutt and his GP, Kenneth Connolly, were due to give evidence at the inquest, but both men died in the past year.

The seven-day inquest was being held in Atherton on Thursday and Friday of last week and will wrap up in Cairns this week.

New Ag Landcare facilitator for the region THE Tablelands and Far North now have a new Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitator to support farmers, industry and community groups.

Evizel Seymour has begun her new role with Terrain NRM at a series of soil health days for landholders across the region. She will be helping both landholders and groups to adopt innovative and sustainable farm and land management practices.

“In this role, I’m a resource hub for new ideas, methods and

things like grant applications,’’ Ms Seymour said. “I’ll be able to put growers in touch with like-minded growers, refer people to specialists who can help them with new ventures, and let everyone know about workshops and funding opportunities.

“I’ll also be supporting a range of programs that are all about working with others to improve soil health, biodiversity and water quality across the region.”

The long-time Tablelands resident said she was loving her new role, which covers the whole Wet Tropics region.

“We’ve also been running microscope workshops on the Tablelands, at Innisfail and Mossman,’’ she said.

“They have been really well received, with participants learning more about, and actually seeing, what lives in their soil.”

Full moon SUP WHEN most people think of a full moon they think of others going a little “lunar”.

Allie from What’SUP Cairns, actually looks forward to full moons. It’s when Allie and a committed group of friends get together on their stand up paddle boards (SUP) and paddle around Lake Tinaroo at night.

Stand Up Paddle boarding is one the world’s fastest growing sports and Allie says stand up paddle boarding saved her life.

“My daughter committed suicide in 2014 and in a low point in my life I decided

to buy the stand-up paddle boarding business,” said Allie.

Being out on the lake at night is something special.”

Allie gets around 40 people joining her on the lake every full moon.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert, or if

you want to bring your own kayak or paddleboard. Everybody is welcome, it’s a way of bringing the Tablelands together.”

After the paddle there’s a social aspect to the night. “We have a fire, music, some red wine and we ask everybody to please bring a plate. You need to bring your own camping equipment if you plan on staying the night.”

The latest full moon paddle was held on Saturday night, February 8.

Official nominations to run for council open soon

LOCAL government elections are held every four years and on the same date for all 77 councils across Queensland. The next elections will be held on Saturday 28 March 2020.

Candidate nominations are expected open on February 22, 2020.

According to the Queensland Government website “By becoming a councillor, or even just

running for election, you can make a positive difference to your local community. Queensland’s councils need councillors and mayors that reflect the diversity of our communities.”

To become a councillor you need to pass the eligibility test which includes being an Australian citizen, being over 18, being enrolled to vote and more.

WITH the local Government elections only six weeks away the Mareeba chamber of commerce is holding a luncheon with the 2020 Mareeba Shire council candidates.

Constituents will be able to hear from not only first time nominees, but also current councillors and mayoral candidates.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said “It’s going to be an informative

session of what the views are of the two current mayoral candidates and also councillor nominees,” “Mayoral candidates will taking questions from the floor as well as prepared questions and council candidates will be able to introduce themselves and explain their vision for the Mareeba shire.”

Joe Moro who is also the MC for the event said that he “Hopes

that the candidates will be able to stay after the lunch and offer ratepayers the chance to chat one on one.”

The lunch is taking place at the Mareeba United Football Club on Thursday, March 12.

Meet the MSC candidates

ALL eight candidates who have so far nominated for Mareeba Shire Council and both mayoral candidates have accepted an invitation to take the stage at a Julatten on Thursday, March 5.

The event is being co-hosted by the Julatten and Molloy Association of Ratepayers and Residents (JAMARR) and the Julatten Initiative Group (JIG).

Moderator for the evening, Rupert Russell from Mount Molloy, said “each nominee for Council will have an opportunity to describe what they would

like to achieve if elected, what facets of the Shire might be improved, and how.”

“Similarly each candidate for the position of Mayor will describe their vision for the Shire, and what they will hope to see initiated during their first term in office.”

Mr Russel said residents from any part of the shire are welcome and “As nominations for the election are open between February 22 and March 3 any candidate yet to nominate is welcome to take part on the

fifth.”

Deadline for questions is Monday, March 2. Two of these questions will be chosen at random and put to a candidate by the moderator. There will be no questions from the floor.

Tourism matters – Mareeba visitor survey results revealed

A NEW survey of tourists visiting the area has found some interesting data regarding visitors spending habits.

The survey conducted on behalf of the Mareeba chamber of commerce found that the bulk of visitors to Mareeba are selfdrive tourists who stay at least one night in the area and spend more than $500 per person.

The Mareeba Visitor Survey was conducted in July and August 2019 as a collaborative project between the Chamber, Mareeba Shire Council and the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre.

Hard copies of the survey were distributed at various locations in Mareeba frequented by visitors as well as the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre and the Mareeba Christmas in July Event.

An online version was also made available to visitors to the visitor centre to better understand the visitor experience in Mareeba and the impact of visitors to the local economy Mareeba Chamber of Com-

merce president Joe Moro said the findings would be used across a multitude of platforms “We have witnessed for a number of years the positive impact tourism is having on the Mareeba economy,” Mr Moro said.

“As a chamber, we wanted some facts and figures to support our views that tourism is a significant contributor to the Mareeba economy.

“The results provide a solid foundation from which we can raise awareness of the contribution tourism makes, and help local businesses cater to the needs of visitors.”

The survey found that visitors to Mareeba were most likely to be self-drive tourists (91%), often repeat recreational holiday makers from NSW, Victoria and other Queensland areas. They travelled in their own campervan, caravan and camper trailer, staying for a median of six nights.

“Visitors staying at least one night (74%), spend an average of $641 per person primarily on

food and drink, accommodation, mechanical and petrol, cafe and restaurants,” the survey found.

“Visitors passing through, spend an average of $56 per person primarily on cafe and restaurants, food and drink, gifts and souvenirs, attractions and tours.”

Food and drink (21%) accounted for most money spent, followed by accommodation (19%), mechanical and petrol (15%) and cafes and restaurants (11%).

Personal knowledge, word of mouth and online and print information was used to plan trips, the survey found.

Mr Moro said aside from providing data about the visitor experience, the survey reinforced the positive visitor experience.

“Nearly all responses (92%) of visitors were complimentary of the friendly community atmosphere, amenities, customer service, accommodation and attractions,” Mr Moro.

“It’s our job now to maintain and enhance that experience so visitors return and continue to spend money in Mareeba.”

Humble green frog kills Coastal Taipan

IN what looked to be real David and Goliath battle, a harmless green tree frog has gone head to head with a Coastal Taipan, with the humble frog making dinner of the deadly snake.

Townsville Snake Catcher Jamie Chapel posted the image (pictured) on his ‘Townsville Snake Take Away and Chapel Pest Control’ Facebook page last week.

“I just witnessed the end of the coolest thing ever – a green tree frog eating a Coastal Taipan, the third most Venomous snake in the world at Stuart tonight.”

Even though the frog was bitten several times by the Taipan the frog has survived and the snake died.

Options for the Kuranda Range Road need to be considered.

Options for Range road AS a $1.25 million dollar safety audit is underway on the Kuranda range road, other options are being discussed as a way to cut congestion and open up the Tablelands.

Last week as Bob Katter discussed the opening of an office in Mareeba, he was also espousing the idea of building a new road that would cut out Kuranda completely and would link the Tablelands with Redlynch.

Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has also come out in support of the idea.

“I think it needs to be considered,” he said “The idea of duplicating the Kuranda range is an icebergs chance in hell of happening.

“Trying to double the width all the way down the range is not going to happen, it’s World Her-

itage-listed, what about wildlife corridors? how do you manage that?”

The Federal Member for Leichhardt said there are other options available “We need to talk about other options that are not widening the range or drilling a tunnel” “There are three other options available, including Quads road, (Southedge-Wangetti Road) which comes out at Wangetti.”

“There’s also the option for a road to come out near JCU that would be about half the length of the Kuranda range.”

“The third option’ Mr Entsch said “is an Ergon track that comes out near Redlynch and starts near Davies Creek.

“This option makes a lot of sense; it’s somewhere that could

connect straight to the Cairns port and airport. You’ve got a better chance at getting that done, than you have of widening a road through a world heritage listed area. “ Mr Entsch says of the Kuranda audit that is currently taking place “if they don’t look into these options they are wasting money.”

“This should have been done decades ago, they did an engineering study on this 20 years ago and then they did nothing.”

In 2003 the Queensland State Government received a report titled “Planning for the upgrade of the Kuranda Range road” by Paul Jones. The report predicted that the road that links Cairns with Kuranda will reach capacity sometime between 2009 and 2015.

Skyrail features in new QLD tourism push THE iconic Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Kuranda is just one of many attractions and businesses being featured in Queensland’s latest domestic tourism campaign.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last week announced the new campaign that is spearheaded by Australian tourism icon Robert Irwin.

The social media campaign was launched last Thursday after recent bushfires and the impacts the coronavirus is having on Queensland’s tourism sector.

“We need to do all we can to help our critical tourism industry through these tough times.

“We need to tell Australians that Queensland remains open for business and we need to encourage them to spend their tourist dollars in our state.

“Robert Irwin is recognisable the world over and a great ambassador for our state and I’m so glad he’s helping get the message out that Queensland is open for business.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said it was great to have Robert on board.

“Tourism operators around the state need all the help they can get right now," she said.

“This campaign will make sure that Queensland is front-ofmind for millions of Australians looking to book a holiday.

“The Irwins are icons, particularly in the US. To have Robert backing in this campaign is invaluable.”

Ms Jones said Robert joined a long list of Queensland tourism operators in filming segments for the new video, which will be used across social platforms and

60 years of Mareeba High

“It’s too far out of town!” was a common criticism of citizens of that era, yet, nevertheless, in 1960, Mareeba State High School enrolled its first students.

The school had expanded from its original one building by the time I was appointed there as a 19-year-old first year teacher in 1966.

Never would I have imagined that I was destined to teach at that one school in six decades and two centuries.

Ahead of me was a learning journey amongst classes of fine young teenagers on the cusp of adulthood – so many changes in systems to face during those years... No surprise that the advent of computers in my classrooms had a significant impact on teaching and learning.

How blessed was I in my career choice? How privileged to observe a small school progress and grow whilst catering for the changing needs of students...

In 2012 I retired from fulltime teaching. The final time I walked out the school gate, slightly teary I’ll admit, I reflected on past and present staff and students – now my treasured memories.

It would be remiss of me not to mark this milestone of Mareeba High – a valued community within our community, an ongoing asset of our town.

KAP to fight State tree clearing laws

THE KP will soon be putting legislation into the Queensland Parliament for the second time to try and bring some sense and reason back into the state’s treeclearing situation.

Ultimately, the KAP aims to force a full repeal of changes made by Labor to the Vegetation Management Act but in the meantime we are focusing on just these amendments to enable farmers to undertake greater Mulga harvesting for the purposes of feeding stock.

The changes are aimed at restoring some common sense to the current scheme, by allowing graziers in the Mulga lands the ability to utilise their own food resources in times of drought.

The passing of these amendments would be a lifeline for these Queenslanders, and to get them over the line we desperately need community support.

Labor are likely to oppose the amendments and despite the fact that it was the Federal LNP that invoked the introduction of treeclearing laws in the first place, there is a still good chance the Queensland LNP will support them.

We are appealing to anyone that cares about this issue to lobby their local State Member, Labor, LNP or otherwise, to get their support.

The first part of our bill addresses shortfalls in the largely positive LNP amendments passed during the time of the LNP Newman Government.

Unfortunately, some key elements were missed such as the exclusion of grazing on High Value Agricultural (HVA) land and also the requirement for the government to state reasons for any rejection of clearing applications.

At present the State Government has no obligation to report back to applicants as to why they have knocked back their applications – this is not good enough.

Our new Mulga amendments basically allow broad access to this valuable source of fodder in drought-declared areas only for the period of the drought.

The State Government will undoubtedly scaremonger over this saying it will allow for overreach in the practice but, the reality is, no producer would “put a match to their hay shed”.

Instead they will ration the Mulga – a coppicing fodder source – as has always historically been the case.

Furthermore, we strongly believe that the current restrictions likely result in more fodder harvesting than is necessary.

I will fight for the electorate

I AM writing in response to Mr Granville Spencers letter in The Express on 29/01/2020 – this letter should be applauded.

The statement in the State of the Region document that ‘Councillors have little influence over operational matters and their decision making capacity is at formal council meetings” is the primary reason the current council has lost touch with the electorate.

To quote the Local Government Association, A councillor’s primary role is to represent their ward or division and the people who live in it. Councillors provide a bridge between the community and the council.’ The current councillors, bar the two mid-term councillors, have successfully allowed this bridge to be removed.

Why a council would allow a CEO or anyone else in council, the power to spend up to $1m without approval from Council baffles me! Although, given past ‘exclusive deals’ where a limit of $1m would have no significance seeing the real estate was given away for $100K, the financial limit is irrelevant!

Spending within Council should be, and needs to be, addressed by councillors, reviewed by councillors, reviewed with

the retrospective divisional supervisors or mangers, and approved by councillors.

The red tape and bureaucratic roadblocks currently enjoyed by the ‘Management of the TRC’ are in direct contrast to the “five strategic areas’ highlighted in the Councils Economic Strategy 1028-2022, outlined in the State of the Region 2019. It is the inability of the current Council to “Bring the control back to the Council Chamber’ that has allowed this Council to run on the terms of the CEO and a few ‘Managers’.

As a Candidate for Division 2, I can assure you, that I will fight for the management of this shire to be back in the hands of the people the electorate voted for to represent them, as apposed to a CEO and a few Managers who believe that ‘they run the Council”.

IN regard to Council delegating $1M expenditure to the CEO, there are some facts that need to be clarified.

The Councillors approve the budget. The CEO’s job is to assess bids for contracts within the approved budget. The CEO is tightly constrained by procurement procedures.

Councillors should review the CEO’s work and direct auditors to spot-check the detail. The state government has identified that Councillors can be vulnerable to corruption and favouritism due to political influences.

This is the elephant in the room. Staying at arm’s length from purchasing decisions

means good governance and cutting red tape.

The best value Councillors can add is by having strong oversight and making budget adjustments in response to market forces. You can’t review a decision that you have been part of.

Brexit rubbish

I AM fed up with hearing news casters saying that “The UK are on its own now they have left the European Common Market.”

What rubbish they belong to the largest economic block on Earth.

The British Commonwealth is still growing if you check your facts. Nations are queuing up to join the most stable, most successful and peaceful group of independent countries in the World.

It cost Britain a fortune to belong to the EU and they had to give up many of their own laws so I can understand their reasons for wanting out, now they can chart their own course and we people within The Commonwealth will surely welcome them back and gain in the future from the extra business.

Of course many Brits have business or bought a home on the continent so they are unhappy but I can’t see those countries over the Channel being nasty with those Brits and loosing the money they bring, can you.

Britain is not on its own and will never be, get ya facts right hey.

Crime is everyone’s business RECENTLY we reported that the Mareeba tennis club had been broken into four times in two weeks, while Mareeba Yamaha has been broken into four times in less than eight weeks.

Over the Australia Day long weekend, there were 14 break and enters to properties on the Tablelands, eight of them in Mareeba.

Tablelands we have a problem.

Last week I read a police report on a break-in that ended with “I regret buying my dream house in Mareeba.”

On The Express Facebook page “I honestly feel like buying in Mareeba was the worse long term decision we have made.

I don’t see any reason why my children would grow up and want to stay here.”

While some people like to point their finger at the police or the courts or even at parents.

Crime on the Tablelands is everyone’s problem.

But nobody wants to lift a finger.

Late last year the Mareeba Neighbour watch group closed down due to lack of numbers Dennis McKinlay who was the area coordinator said “We

only had a small number of people who would turn up to the meetings. The community wasn’t interested in supporting us,” “We were preaching to the same small handful of people every week. We had a number of positions vacant on the committee and we couldn’t fill them.

“So late last year, we put the program on hold.”

Police can only do so much, the council can only do so much and the courts can only do so much.

But if we all do a little bit, it all adds up.

As Dennis McKinlay said “we need the whole community to get involved.”

When I walk around the streets of Mareeba in the middle of the day I see so many kids on their bikes, why aren’t they at school?

Detective Senior Sergeant Bret Divine from the CIB told me “The problem stems from generations of Alcoholics, social housing problems, and bad home environments.”

I’ve heard from a few people that kids are on the street at night, because it’s not safe at home, they would rather hang

out on the street, where it’s safer.

They then commit break and enters because they’re bored or because they need money for food.

Do you we need to open a safe house for children to sleep and eat in, no questions asked?

How do we make sure kids are going to school? Do we punish the parents? What can everyone do to play their part?

It all screams that we need to pull together as a community, if we don’t stop this cycle now, we will still be having the same conversation in years to come.

Last Month Mareeba Shire council Mayor Tom Gilmore, Member for Cook Ms Cynthia Lui and the Queensland Police Service, Department of Youth Justice and Child Safety had a round table meeting “To address the community perception of an increase in juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour in the Shire.”

There was one person missing from that meeting, you.

Without you, it all falls apart, without you there is no community.

It’s all well and good to wait for the above mentioned agencies to do their job, but when are you going to start doing yours?

New case of banana disease A SUSPECTED new case of Panama disease tropical race 4 (Panama TR4) has been detected on a Tully Valley banana farm.

PanamaTR4 is a soil-borne fungal disease that is present in Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Biosecurity Queensland’s Panama TR4 Program Leader Rhiannon Evans said “Our surveillance team identified banana plants displaying symptoms typical of Panama TR4 during a routine inspection of a property last month.

“We have a positive result from preliminary diagnostic testing for Panama TR4, however further testing is required this testing can take up to four weeks to complete,” she said.

“The grower was notified immediately and we are working with them to ensure strict on-farm biosecurity measures are maintained with a focus on preventing disease spread and minimising any production downtime.

“The property with the suspect detection is in close proximity to the three previously confirmed infested properties.”

To date, the Queensland Government has invested more than $42 million to manage the disease Far North Queensland.

And the government claims that eradication of Panama TR4 is not feasible.

The first detected case of Panama TR4 in Queensland was on a banana farm in the Tully Valley in March 2015. The second case was on property in July 2017 and a third case in February 2018. All three properties are in close proximity to each other.

“This suspect detection reinforces the need for growers to implement and maintain robust on-farm biosecurity measures to protect their farms and the wider banana industry.”

Panama TR4 is not harmful to humans and does not affect the fruit.

Drink driving, Atherton Police have charged two local men after two separate traffic intercepts in Atherton on Saturday morning.

It’s alleged a 25-year-old man was intercepted on Main Street at about 1.20am where he returned a reading of 0.126 per cent BAC. Police intercepted an 18-year-old man on Third Avenue at about 2.35am and it’s alleged that he returned a reading of 0.144 per cent BAC. Both men are expected to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on February 18, charged with drink driving.

Drink driving, Ravenshoe A 25-year-old Millstream man is expected to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on February 11, charged with drink driving after a traffic intercept in Ravenshoe on Saturday afternoon.

It’s alleged the man was intercepted on Tully Falls Road at about 3.30pm where he returned a reading of 0.179 per cent BAC. Assault, Mareeba Police have charged a 31-yearold Koongal woman after an incident in Mareeba on Saturday afternoon.

It’s alleged the woman assaulted another woman outside of a licensed premises on By-

rnes Street at about 12.30pm after a verbal altercation.

She is expected to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on February 24, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Stealing from vehicles, Ravenshoe Police have charged two local girls after several incidents on Sunday in Ravenshoe.

It’s alleged that a 13-yearold girl and a 14-year-old girl attended a business on Bolton Street at about 10.30am where they have thrown rocks at the building before stealing a wallet from a vehicle parked at the business.

It will be further alleged they then moved on to an educational facility on Moore Street where they stole another wallet and car keys from a vehicle parked at the facility.

Police further alleged the girls then broke into a vacant house on River View Street at about 2pm where they attempted to hide from police.

Both girls will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 1992.

Public Nuisance and Stealing, Mareeba Police have charged a local man following an alleged incident in Mareeba on Tuesday afternoon.

The 47-year-old man was lo-

cated on Byrnes Street at about 1.30pm, allegedly creating a public nuisance.

It’s also alleged that the man had entered a business on Byrnes Street earlier in the day and stole products.

He is expected to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court charged with two counts of stealing and one count of public nuisance.

Unlicenced driving, Mount Garnet Police have charged a 27-yearold Innot Hot Springs woman after a traffic intercept near Mount Garnet on Tuesday morning.

It’s alleged the woman was intercepted on the Kennedy Highway at about 10.10am driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, while she was unlicenced. Her vehicle was immobilised for 90 days due to a repeat offence.

She is expected to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on February 18, charged with unlicenced driving, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and failing to comply with an immobilising notice.

Drugs, unlicenced and dangerous driving, Atherton Police have charged a 32-yearold Millstream man after a traffic intercept in Atherton on Wednesday afternoon.

A man was intercepted on Mabel Street at about 1.30pm for a roadside breath test, where he returned a negative reading.

However, it will be alleged that methylamphetamine was located in the vehicle.

It’s alleged that the man was driving the vehicle unlicenced.

His vehicle was immobilised for 90 days.

Police also allege that the

same man was the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a power pole on the Kennedy Highway on January 17, and that he ran from the scene after causing a second vehicle to also crash behind him.

He is expected to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court later today (February 6), charged with two counts of breaching bail conditions and driving without a licence, and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

Public nuisance, Mareeba Police have charged local man after an incident in Mareeba on Wednesday afternoon.

It’s alleged a 38-year-old man was located on Atherton Street at about 4.30pm by an off-duty police officer running up and down the street in his underwear, after having an argument with a member of the public.

He is expected to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on February 24, charged with public nuisance.

Sign up and play basketball MAREEBA Basketball has kicked off their 2020 season and invites all interested players to come along and sign up.

With divisions for primary and high school kids and mens and ladies, everyone can join in the game.

Last week saw the biggest ever influx of ladies join up to play and all new and existing players are still welcome. Ladies play every Tuesday night from 6pm.

Crossfit Mareeba is all set for this Saturday’s Red Dirt Cup.

CROSSFIT Mareeba will play host to the annual Red Dirt Cup this Saturday, February 15 at 159 Walsh Street.

Crossfitters from all across the region will descend on the Mareeba box for a day of workouts and fun competing in three divisions – scaled, RXD and masters.

The morning wave kicks off at 7am (scaled ladies and male and female masters) and from 12noon the scaled males and RXD males and females will take to the floor.

BULLRIDE action will take over Simmo’s Arena in Biboohra this May. The Indie Rose Foundation Bullride, to be held on Saturday May 30, is all about raising funds to help support sick kids and their families in FNQ, all while enjoying an action packed night of bullriding at its best.

With bulls supplied by Glen Simmonds and Trop Chappel, this ride is set to attract some of the best and with a $5000 main

prize on offer in the open bullride, this will be a night not to miss.

The night will also feature under 12 calf rides, a mini bullride, junior billride and a novice bullride, with all the action captured on a big screen.

Gates open at 3.30pm with the first buckout at 5pm. Entry is $20 for adults and $5 for kids and a bar and food will be available at the event.

Adams makes maiden Hat-trick for first grade century young France

Chris Adams claimed a wicket before knocking up his maiden century in Atherton’s run chase on Saturday.

A CLASSY ton from Chris Adams wasn’t enough to get Atherton over the line on Saturday, but gave the vocal home crowd at Loder Park plenty to chirp about.

In the space of a week Chris celebrated a birthday, represented Queensland Country U21’s

in South Australia and notched up his maiden 1st Grade century.

Atherton won the toss and elected to bowl first. Opening bowler Seppe Barletta claimed an early wicket, which brought Mulgrave’s big hitting Jake Roach to the crease where he

settled in, finding gaps and clearing the fence on his way to an unbeaten 149.

Bowler Paul Nasser worked hard claiming two unassisted wickets and Chris Adams made the most of his opportunity with the ball in taking a wicket. But the bowlers had no answer for Roach and Mulgrave went on to close their innings at 4-267.

Faced with a big run chase and with storms skirting, Chris Adams went to work for Atherton keeping the target in reach as the top order fell around him.

Paul Nasser came in at number five to join Chris and the young guns put on a 118 run partnership featuring a couple of fifties and bringing up the hundred for Chris off just 68 balls. Paul added 66 to the total and Atherton were right back in the game.

Caleb Constant and Dylan Pettingill looked set to finish the job with a valuable 47 run partnership but Mulgrave were able to clean up the tail leaving Atherton an agonising 15 runs short.

The loss drops Atherton back to second in the 1-Day Cricket Far North competition with just two matches left to play.

Next match is this Saturday February 15, against Norths at Griffiths Park in Cairns.

MAREEBA secured some good wins over the weekend with young bowler Jarrod France (pictured) all smiles after taking a hat-trick and bringing his side to a win.

Mareeba’s seconds side took on Port Douglas and came away with a win. Mareeba made 7/168 with Rowan Foxwell 34, Brendan Falvo not out for 23, Jarrod France 22 and Brett Stallan 21.

Port Douglas went in to bat in shortened overs due to rain and were 8/75 off 20 overs. Jarrod France bowled beautifully and got a hat trick and finished on 3/5. Tyson Brown, Jett Prien and Brett Stallan all took a wicket each and Leonard Hodges had some nice tight bowling to win the game for Seconds.

The thirds also had a win against Mulgrave bowling them out for 10/92. Steve Harnischfeger 4/22, Rhys Thomas 3/23, Zac McBurnie 2/18 and Vernon Jansen 1/23. Mareeba passed the score in the 26th over.

The tier three side also had a good win against Mulgrave making 3/125. Angus Campman was not out on 64 and Jole Muccignat on 23. Mugrave was out for 80.

The ladies played Mulgrave in a great game, but unfortunately came away with a loss. Lucia

Curcio topped scored on 21, Carmel Dayes got 2/12 and Rayna Jonsson, Toni Cristopher and Kelsey Butler all took a wicket each. Carmel Dayes, Brooke Butler and Janelle Smithwick all took catches.

The Cricket Chicks also suffered a loss, but as always had lots of fun on the pitch.

Jody Hogan topped scored on

19 with Trisha Spry 2/17 and Farah Bousted 1/12.
