Magnificent Mike and his flying machine FROM air battles over a Japanese island to a humble hangar in Mareeba, this F4U-1D Corsair has had one hell of an adventure. Owned by Mike Spaulding (pictured), the old warbird is set to fly once again by the end of 2018, taking to the skies for the first time in more than 70 years. The Express takes an in-depth look at the restoration project of the famous gull-winged fighter, once coined the “Whistling Death”. Full Story – Page 6

ONE Nation could reveal their candidates for the State seats of Cook and Dalrymple within the next week. Speaking to The Express, Queensland One Nation leader and Buderim MP Steve Dickson re-
mained tight-lipped about where the next lot of candidates will be running or who they will be. But he didn’t rule out the two Far North seats from being named as part of that announcement. “There is interest in both of those seats,” he said. “We have numerous people putting their hands

up right across the State. “I want to make sure we get the vetting process done correctly…We’ve got a variety of people from right throughout the community.” The party has sent shockwaves throughout the country since grabbing four senate seats at last year’s Federal election and is likely to win more
at the next State election. It currently has 32 candidates in Queensland, down from the 36 it announced last December after several controversies eventually led to four candidates bowing out.

SHERRI Soncin and Jeanette Sturiale might as well be Mareeba’s model neighbours. Learning program to help youngsters AN education program that uses rhymes and songs to stimulate a child’s brain development has returned to the Tablelands. Tablelands Shire libraries will once again host the First 5 Forever Rhyme Time program, which offers free, interactive sessions involving songs and rhymes for children aged between zero and five years. “Rhyme-times provide opportunities for babies and toddlers to be introduced to language, to develop listening skills, and extend their memories with sequencing within the rhymes and the songs,” said Tablelands Libraries coordinator Briengan Rodgers. “Fine and gross motor skills are also developed by involvement with the actions that accompany the rhymes and songs. “These sessions provide an opportunity for parents and carers to meet others with young children, in a safe, friendly and welcoming atmosphere where the focus is on fun and making new friends.” 90 per cent of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years,
with research showing sharing stories, rhymes, singing, talking and playing with your child from birth builds a foundation for their future development. “We want children to have the best opportunities in life and have the greatest chance to succeed,” said Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella. “Talk, play, sing, read with your child every day. You’ll turn more and more lights on in their developing minds.” The First 5 Forever initiative is being held in conjunction with Tablelands Regional Council, the State Government and State Library of Queensland. Sessions will be held at the following venues and times: Atherton Library, fortnightly on a Wednesday at 9:30am Malanda Library, fortnightly on a Wednesday at 10:30am Herberton Library, monthly on a Thursday at 10am Ravenshoe Library, monthly on a Thursday at 10am

One Nation eyes FNQ seats
Labor backs health commissioner THE Federal Government’s plans for a National Rural Health Commissioner are set to become a reality after Labor threw its support behind the idea. Shadow Rural Health spokesman Tony Zappia told The Express his party was largely supportive of the government’s Health Insurance Amendment (National Rural Health Commissioner) Bill, which will spend $4.4 million to establish a Commissioner tasked with overseeing reforms to regional and rural health in Australia. “We’re happy to see what the Commissioner will do and we will certainly support the initiative,” he said. “It could be a way forward to improving health outcomes in rural and remote areas.” The Bill is due to be debated at the next parliamentary sitting starting on March 20 after being delayed earlier this month. But Mr Zappia said he was concerned about the short, two year appointment term of the Commissioner, whose office will cease to exist after July 1, 2020. “It doesn’t allow for long term planning of any initiatives which the commissioner may wish to pursue,” he said. “The other concern that we have is there is no provision for resources or staffing for the Commissioner, other than what the Commissioner is able to negotiate with the Department of Health.” Central to the function of the Commissioner will be developing a National Rural Generalist Pathway and providing advice on rural health reform to the Minister responsible. They will also work with communities, the health sector, universities, specialist training colleges and across all levels of government. “I see the primary role of the Commissioner as being the person that will advocate for additional resources and additional support for rural and remote areas with respect to their needs,” Mr Zappia said.
From Page 1 Mr Dickson said One Nation would be running a candidate in every Queensland seat, the number of which could increase from 89 to 93 if the Queensland Redistribution Commission follows through on its redistribution proposal. The proposal would also see Dalrymple spilt in two and part of it merged with another. Dimbulah, Tolga, Atherton and the southern Tablelands would join Babinda, Innisfail and Mission Beach in the new seat of Hill. Mr Dickson said he believed voters were hungry for change in both Dalrymple and Cook. “People right throughout Queensland, if not Australia, are absolutely disappointed with the lack of engagement by the major parties,” he said. “Both of the parties have just lost their way. They’ve forgotten that they’re working for people. Whether that’s in Cooktown or Coolongatta, it’s the same.” Mr Dickson said he wanted to make North Queensland an “economic hub” for the state, embarking on an agricultural and infrastructure development blitz across the region. “We will be building more dams than any government that I’ve seen in my lifetime in Queensland,” he said. “We have to. Water security is the key to the future and without that you’re not thinking 10, 50 or 100 years ahead.”
Labor and the Coalition support the establishment of a National Rural Health Commissioner who will lobby for hospitals like Mareeba.
It comes as Federal Assistant Health Minister Dr David Gillespie announced a Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund last week, which will enable junior doctors completing their intern year to gain experience in rural general practice, in addition to their hospital based rotations. At least 60 junior doctors will be supported by the fund each year, at a cost of up to $10 million. Mr Zappia welcomed the initiative but “would be keen to see how well it works”. Meanwhile, Mareeba Hospital will lose its Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding exemption in October along with $2.1 million that goes with it. The funding relates to Section 19(2) of the Health Insurance Act 1973, which provides an exemption for certain hospitals to claim against the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for non-admitted, non-referred professional services provided in emergency departments, such as outpatient (GP) services. But Mareeba, which has had that exemption
since about 2006, is now no longer eligible because of the increase in its population. Mr Zappia said funding cut was “a blow” for the hospital. “The cuts to hospital funding would undoubtedly be hurting hospitals like Mareeba, and it’s not just the end of the COAG funding that would be a problem for them,” he said. “If they had access to additional funding, I’m sure they could arrange their own services so the local community would be better served by them.” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Administrator Terry Mehan has previously said the community of Mareeba “would be no worse off” under any changes to the health service model once the COAG funding goes. Northern Queensland Primary Health Network CEO Robin Moore met with local GPs and Mareeba Hospital’s medical superintendent on February 22 to discuss options for how future outpatient services would be delivered in the town.

THE founder of a program dedicated to housing homeless people suffering from mental health and addiction issues will share some of his wisdom with a local housing provider this week. New York-based Pathways to Housing founder Dr Sam Tsemberis will run a two-day workshop with Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) staff at the Jackeroo Motel from tomorrow, explaining the five core principles of his widely popular “Housing First” model. MCHC manager Patricia Goldfinch said while Mareeba, Kuranda and the Tablelands had their own unique challenges when it came to housing homeless people, Dr Tsemberis’ knowledge and experience would be of huge benefit to the organisation. “The five principles around those support systems for homelessness are what we are focusing on, and
how we can we can integrate those principles into our service delivery and addressing those homelessness issues we are faced with in Mareeba and across the Tablelands,” she said. The Housing First five principles are: immediate access to permanent housing with no housing readiness requirements, consumer choice and self-determination, recovery orientation, individualised and client-driven supports and social and community integration. Ms Goldfinch said Mareeba and the Tablelands suffered from “tertiary homelessness”, which refers to people sleeping in overcrowded accommodation, couch surfing or those renting dilapidated homes which failed to meet basic community standards. Meanwhile, Kuranda is facing a tipping point of homeliness and severe overcrowding of accommodation.

“There’s a lack of affordable housing in Kuranda,” Ms Goldfinch said. “You have people born and raised there who don’t want to move. They’re very culturally connected to their land and they like to stay in their town.” Ms Goldfinch said a lack of housing available for immediate access to the homeless was a big challenge for the region, but MCHC was making inroads with a property they have rented through the private sector. “It’s in partnership with an investor. We’ve got a large, four bedroom home that will be up and ready this week,” she said. “We’re going to try and model this house on Dr Tsemberis’ principles.” Dr Tsemberis has travelled around the world conducting numerous workshops and lectures based on his Housing First model.

Treasurer says cheers QUEENSLAND treasurer Curtis Pitt has given a vote of confidence in the future of Mareeba and the Tablelands’ export industry after a tour of the region last week. Mr Pitt, who is also the new Trade and Investment Minister, visited Marcello Avolio’s lychee farm at Paddys Green and also stopped by Mark Watkins’ Mt Uncle Distillery in Walkamin to congratulate them on their recent success in the export market. Mr Avolio became the first farmer in Australia to successfully send a commercial shipment of Tai So lychees to the United States in December, while Mr Watkins’ has cracked the London bar scene with his Botanic Australis Gin and Iridium Gold Rum. After the distillery showcased their Original
and Navy-strength gins at London’s annual Junipalooza festival last year, Trade and Investment Queensland arranged for the business to co-sponsor the Queensland Day Reception at Australia House in the British capital, running the bar. Mr Pitt was thrilled about Mt Uncle’s success. “You know you’ve done something right when you’re able to force your way into high end London bars. It’s really like trying to sell ice to the eskimos,” he said. “It’s a huge task but they’ve got a very unique product which is very uniquely Australian. “Their popularity is going through the roof.” Mr Watkins, Mt Uncle’s founder and head
distiller, took a 300-year-old London Dry gin recipe and spent two years recreating his own version with Australian-sourced plants. “Our Australian twist on a traditional London Dry is really why it’s started to take off overseas, even though it is a very saturated market – there’s over 170 brands of gin in the UK,” he said. “We’re the highest awarded whiskey, rum and gin producer in Australia.” The distillery currently produces vodka, liqueur, rum, gin and whiskey and will be ramping up production to cater for increasing demand. Over at Paddys Green, Mr Pitt said Mr Avolio’s success proved there was a viable export market for Tablelands produce.

Warbird set to fly by next year Warbird Adventures owner Mike Spaulding with his F4U-1D Corsair currently being restored at his hangar at Mareeba airport.
AS far as warbirds go, the Vought F4U-1D Corsair is about as good as it gets. Sleek, sexy and extremely powerful, the American fighter served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II, helping the allies beat back the Japanese onslaught. More than 70 years after it last flew in battle, F4U-1D Corsair serial number 82640 will take to the skies once again by the end of next year, this time from Mareeba. Owned by Mike Spaulding, who runs Warbird Adventures at Mareeba Airport, the Corsair is undergoing a six-year restoration project to bring it back to flying condition. “We’ve been on it seriously for four years and
we’re now going into our fifth year,” said Mr Spaulding. “We expect it will fly next year or very close to it. It’ll be towards the end of 2018, that’s our plan.” The aircraft, which is now capable of sitting on its wheels, is currently having its hydraulics, avionics and electrical systems installed. The Corsair’s fuselage is largely restored and its original “sea blue” colour scheme has been painted onto the tail. “It’s an exciting project. We all enjoy coming up here and working on it on a daily basis,” he said. “To use a hackneyed phrase, it’s not the des-

tination which is our main game here, it’s the journey.” The Corsair is a labour of love for Mr Spaulding, who has previously restored a crashed P-40N Kittyhawk and operates another three warbirds out of Mareeba. Countless hours have been spent by his engineers working five days a week, and after more than four years of blood, sweat and tears, Mr Spaulding can finally see the finish line. “When you first line up down the end of the runway in any of these restored aeroplanes, the thought is always the same: here we are,” he said. One of only a small number remaining in the world, the Corsair has captured the imagination
of aviation buffs thanks to its unique, gull wing design and monster Pratt and Witney R-2800 double row 18 cylinder radial engine , producing about 2000 horsepower. The engine itself made the Corsair one of the fastest fighters of World War II, and it would go on to serve admirably in the Korean War during the early 1950s. Mr Spaulding’s Corsair served with the US Navy on-board aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, participating in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. She was then displayed at a museum in the United States for several decades before eventually ending up in Wangaratta, Victoria, when Mr Spaulding purchased it and brought it to Mareeba.

Club enters new era THE Mareeba Business Women’s Club has been reborn with a new-look committee primed to celebrate and support local female entrepreneurs. The club, which has been inactive for the past three years, voted in a new committee at their annual general meeting last Monday led by So Swish owner and newly-elected president Stacey Shaw. “I’d like to see the club back flourishing again,” she said. “For me, I’d love to see the club being something women are really happy to be involved with.” Other women elected to the new committee were vice-president Rachel Smith, secretary and treasurer Robyn Boundy and patron, Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt. Lola Stevens, Jenny Carmichael, Jess Fealy and Cr Wyatt will form the club’s functions committee. Mrs Shaw said she wanted the club to be a positive and empowering influence for women in Mareeba. “It’s not just for women who own a business, it’s for any woman interested in reinvigorating business in Mareeba,” she said.

“They could be a stay-at-home mum, retirees or a young woman who’s just finished high school.” The club held a short networking function at Mareeba Leagues Club last Wednesday to mark International Women’s Day. “It was really fun-filled and empowering,” Mrs Shaw said. “We had three groups of speakers and we’re hoping to do more events like that throughout the year.” The club currently has 18 members. “We’re hoping it will just keep growing, which will be great,” Mrs Shaw said. For more information, search for “Mareeba Business Women’s Club Inc” on Facebook or call 0418 554 303. Meanwhile, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group held a networking function for rural women at Mareeba Heritage Centre last Friday night. The function aimed to “enhance and inspire” the natural capacity of rural women as natural resource managers, such as being their child’s first teacher, managing the land or as community leaders.

Treasurer ducks pledge on sedge QUEENSLAND treasurer Curtis Pitt has stopped short of promising much-needed funding to combat the spread of navua sedge on the Tablelands. Mr Pitt joined Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella, Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball and Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth on a tour of a navua sedge infestation in the shire last Thursday. Council is chasing more than $1 million to help manage navua sedge, with has invaded several Tablelands towns. “The budget hasn’t been framed yet,” Mr Pitt said. “This would be about the fifth or sixth occasion where I’ve met directly with Shane Knuth about the issue…It’s why there’s been some early action from the Department of Agriculture and
Fisheries to make sure the council has some support in terms of control. “Beyond that, we need to sit down and shape what any research looks like.” Cr Paronella said sedge had already been detected in the northern, eastern and southern areas of the shire. “The Barron River is pretty much the cut-off point at the moment,” he said. Mt Garnet, Malanda, Ravenshoe, Topaz and Millaa Millaa are just some of the towns hit by sedge, but there are fears the weed could spread into the region’s “golden triangle” - an area of pristine agricultural farming land between Walkamin, Atherton and Kairi. “It’s a big concern for a lot of northern coun-

cils. The Cassowary Coast has expressed a lot of concern and Hinchinbrook shire as well,” Cr Ball said. “It would definitely be of concern to residents in Mareeba in this irrigation channel.” Cr Ball said sedge would not just affect grazing and dairy land, but the region’s “top 20 agricultural industries”. “That’s hay, peanuts and everything else that goes with it. We’re talking a multi-million dollar industry here,” he said. “The other concern as well is because we are such a food bowl and hub for northern Australia, if it does get into those hay-growing areas, western Queensland relies so much on the Atherton Tablelands and I don’t think people realise just
how far our produce goes and what an impact it will have on our biggest industry.” Cr Ball said there needed to be more research done into the seeding ability of sedge, which is capable of producing up to 500 million seeds per hectare and has the potential to reduce grazing and pasture capacity by up to 40 per cent. Mr Pitt said the State government wanted to continue playing a role in combating sedge, but needed to figure out what the future of that role will look like. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth previously vowed to “get in the face” of the State Government this year over funding to combat sedge. “I hope they become aware it’s as serious as what we’ve been telling them,” he told The Express in January.
Guide book released for cane farmers A HOW-TO guide on reducing the risks of weeds, pests and diseases impacting sugar production will bolster the industry’s biosecurity measures. Sugar Research Australia’s (SRA’s), Biosecurity Manual for Sugarcane Producers offers an array of simple biosecurity measures for farmers, contractors, millers, researchers, and consultants working in the sugar industry. That includes choosing approved varieties of cane, cleaning equipment and vehicles, restricting movements of vehicles and people away from production areas and reporting new or unusual pest symptoms on farms. Cairns cane farmer John Ferrando welcomed the new guide, saying biosecurity awareness was crucial for both maintaining a productive crop and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry. “Feral pigs do lots of damage to the cane here,” he said. “We also know that things can go horribly wrong when there is an incursion of an exotic pest or disease. “It could take years for the industry to get on top of the problem, or worse, there could be no chemical controls for a new pest – so it is far better that we be vigilant and keep things clean to begin with,
which this manual can assist with.” The manual was developed by Plant Health Australia (PHA), in conjunction with SRA, Canegrowers, the Australian Sugar Milling Council, the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the New South Wales Department of Primary industries PHA Broadacre Cropping program manager Dr Sharyn Taylor said that the manual was new for the industry. “Sugarcane growers haven’t had a guide like this before,” she said. “PHA worked with experts in sugarcane production to provide information that will help growers prevent new pests from spreading onto a farm.” The General Biosecurity Obligation in Queensland and the soon to be introduced General Biosecurity Duty in NSW both mandate precautions on farms and along supply chains. Copies of the manual are available from SRA or Canegrowers. An electronic copy can be downloaded by visiting www.sugarresearch.com.au and searching for “biosecurity manual”.

A SIGNATURE gourmet food event is urging Mareeba and Tablelands businesses to showcase their gourmet foods in Brisbane later this year. The annual Regional Flavours festival wants greater Far North representation at its South Bank Parklands market stalls, where about 80,000 foodies are expected to converge for the two-day event in July. Stallholders from previous
events have been able to connect with new wholesale buyers, local restaurateurs and commercial food distributors to explore new business opportunities. Popular stalls at Regional Flavours in 2016 included handmade chocolates, native fruits, local honey, gluten free ingredients, organic vegetables, cured meat products, olive oils, boutique wineries, gourmet sweets, preserves and cheeses.
Interested food businesses are invited to submit their Stallholder Application Form via www.regionalflavours.com.au by March 24. Successful applicants will be notified by March 31. Applications must meet certain criteria including operating from a Queensland premises or using ingredients from Queensland farms to be considered for the event.
Phone scam gets sneaky A NEW phone scam only requiring people to say “yes” could soon hit Mareeba and the Tablelands. Phone security company CPR Call Blocker has uncovered a new scam where, upon someone answering their phone, an unknown caller asks “Can you hear me?” If the person says “yes”, the scammer then records your answer, which is then edited to make it sound like you authorised a major purchase. It is effectively a verbal contract, known as a voice signature, similar to clicking “I agree” on a computer. A voice signature is used legitimately by companies to show that that a person agreed to some sort of a change, usually an upgrade in some sort of plan.
The scam is sweeping the United States and CPR Call Blocker believe it is set to hit Australia. “In our experience of working across the US and UK, scams quickly spread globally so it is sensible for people to be on their guard as we have no doubt that fraudsters operating in Australia will soon start using these tactics,” said CPR Call Blocker’s Kris Hicks. “I know that people think it’s impolite to hang up, but it’s a good strategy. If you don’t recognise the number, don’t answer. And if you do pick up, and they instantly start asking “Can you hear me? Are you there?” as if they are trying to get you to say “yes” to something, don’t say anything and hang up. It’s fishy,

don’t fall into the trap.” Getting registered on the Telephone Preference Service and purchasing a call blocker device is recommended for those concerned about scams. Mr Hicks urged those who suspected their bank account had been compromised to contact their bank or card provider as soon as possible. “It also advisable to check your bank and card statements regularly for unauthorised charges as a matter of course,” he said. The latest phone scam comes after Mareeba locals were targeted by a tax scam last year, which attempted to extort thousands of dollars by randomly calling people and claiming they owed money to the tax department.

Water security vital to area’s future AS we enter the early days of March, I am slightly concerned for our growing agricultural sector in the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area (MDIA) in relation to water availability for this water year & next water year. Currently Tinaroo dam sits at 47 per cent with only 16 days left of March. Many farmers last year faced reduced allocations in their water resulting in some reduced yields which also impacted slightly on local employment numbers. This year most likely will bring a state election to our foreshore. I believe now would be the time for representatives at all government levels to get together and lobby hard to secure water storage into the future. Whether that be water sourced from the Johnson catchment area via a pipe or a new dam in our local area, it is paramount that this needs to happen now. The MDIA is already going ahead in leaps and bounds with unprecedented investment in our local farms. However, for this area to continue to support this industry we need to offer the main element in farming and that is water security now and into the future. Locky Bensted Mareeba

In response to Denis McKinley’s letter in the Express. Last year after discussing the COAG funding twice with the Minister, we demanded a formal meeting with the Minister and Senior Head of Department on the issue. This meeting took place on the 29, November, 2016. They claimed that Mareeba was only one of two hospitals in the whole of Australia that were not in the arrangement that will come in to place in this October. They said they couldn’t continue to turn a blind eye whilst two hospitals got a golden handshake and 5000 others didn’t. So with some of the allegations put forward in Mr McKinley’s letter -the complete opposite is true. In my case, the reason why we still have the hospital is because of the energy and commitment by me, my office and particularly the local people who have been leading the fight over the years. But the fact is all the other hospitals in Australia should get in step with Mareeba under the current arrangement whereby the Government recompenses the doctors in private practice. Oth-
erwise, the queues in emergency will get longer with people who can’t afford to go to a private doctor. Mr McKinley is dead right on this. Mr McKinley is fighting the good fight, he’s dead right on the issues. Keep it up. Bob Katter Federal Member for Kennedy
Carbon dioxide naturally good for us “CLIMATE” is weather considered in periods of thirty years. Anyone over 50 has seen at least one climate-period during their adult life. Other than increased electricity and insurance bills, has anyone seen first-hand any of the “catastrophic” changes the greenies get so worked up about? Carbon dioxide is not the climate-control knob – it’s plant food. The four to seven per cent extra humans release benefits all life on earth. Here’s a simple analogy to give some perspective. For each 2500 air molecules, there’s just one molecule of CO2. There’s around 2500 concrete blocks in a big, new house – just one of those blocks represents CO2. That CO2-block allegedly captures more heat during the day than all the very similar blocks around it and then uses it to heat the whole house at night. Yeah, right. The physics just don’t work – see the Ideal Gas Law and the Second Law of Thermodynamics for a fuller explanation. Peter Campion Tolga
Hospital staff deserve many thanks I HAVE been in and out of hospital for the last two months and I would like to take the time to thank all the nurses, wardsmen, domestic staff, cleaners, paramedics, and doctors for the wonderful treatment I got while I was there. I still have continuing problems with my health that are being dealt with as an outpatient, mainly at Cairns Hospital. I heard some disturbing things while I was in hospital; one was that the chronic disease clinic was shutting down due to the lack of funding. I need this clinic, I was told I have heart failure and that clinic could help me fight this condition, but was told I couldn’t go there because there was no money in the budget so now I have to travel to Cairns to see a specialist. I have been reading about how nothing is going to change at Mareeba hospital but, I am told services like the clinic are closing. I was told that my best option was to go to a local GP. I was left without a local GP so asked about going to a hospital GP and was told there was a four week wait. It will take a month for me to see a hospital GP. So now I have to go private and I have to pay full price for all my medicine and doctor visits as no one bulk bills anymore. I think I am going to end up as one of those people who fall through the cracks and ends up God knows where. I’m very concerned about the Mareeba Hospital. Brett Camp MAREEBA
Rotary FNQ Field Days goes retro Vintage tractors will be on display again at Rotary FNQ Field Days in 2017.
A BLAST from the past is sure to delight fans of vintage tractors and machinery at this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days. Far from the modern tractor displays featuring air-conditioned cabs, power steering, variable speed transmissions and GPS, the FNQ Field Days will also feature several vintage tractor and stationary engine displays. Visitors will be entertained with stories of days gone by on the farm, as the ladies there recall cold mornings when they cranked their milking machine motor until blisters appeared on their hands, or when
the crank handle slipped causing many a skinned knuckle. You can also hear the men talk of “the good old days”, making comparisons of tractors between then and now. Their vintage warhorses had no big horsepower engines or air-conditioning and the dust filters were the hairs in their noses. Steering was assisted by strong arms and the GPS was two bloodshot eyes. Also not to be missed is the display of vintage tractors and other relics by Herberton’s Historic Village. Enthusiasts are encouraged to view the “Waterloo Boy” stationary engine being demonstrated. The original “Waterloo Boy” kerosene-powered tractor was the forefather to what is now John Deere. You can also join in conversation with exhibitors from the Tablelands, Burdekin, Townsville, Bowen and Mackay at the stationery engine compound. The sounds of many restored stationary engines of yesteryear are set to roar, including Lister, Southern Cross, Sundial, International, Petter, Blackstone and Ruston-Hornsby. Veteran exhibitors like Alf Shand from the Burdekin, Chillagoe’s Tony Little, Wondecla man Toby Atkinson and Ian Williams from Townsville will also make their return to Field Days this year.

Becci comes home for concert WELCOME HOME: Country music singer Becci Nethery will return to her home town of Chillagoe this month to play at a free concert.
CHILLAGOE songstress Becci Nethery will return to her home town for a one-off, free concert this month as part of an effort to promote tourism in rural Australia. The 20-year-old will take part in the concert as part of the Australian Horizons Foundation’s “We Are Here” documentary project, aimed at highlighting 80 rural towns often neglected by tourists visiting the country. “I haven’t been home for a little while so I can’t wait to get back,” Nethery said. “I’m really excited I get to perform as well and hopefully doing some good promotion for Chillagoe.” Comedian Dave Ivkovic will join Nethery for the concert, to

be performed at Chillagoe’s Post Office Hotel on March 24. Nethery said apart from the town’s well known caves, smelters and the Walsh River, Chillagoe offered tourists a “homely” feel. “Anyone who’s ever wondered into Chillagoe has left saying how wonderful the locals are and how welcoming it is in our town,” she said. “I think that’s something people really enjoy.” The Your Hand Slips Into Mine singer was recently named Breakthrough Artist Of The Year at January’s Tamworth Country Music Festival, giving 18 performances over 10 days at the festival. Nethery said she would play a variety of original numbers and new songs from her latest album, Beautiful Life, at the Chillagoe concert. “One of my biggest hits, Your Hand Slips Into Mine, is about moving away from my home town and how much I miss it,” she said. “Chillagoe and its people have definitely been inspiring to me.” Nethery, who is based in Sydney, said she was focused on making music her full-time job this year and looked forward to playing in several gigs and mini-tours. The concert will kick off from 8:30pm but locals who would like to participate in the documentary are urged to meet at the Post Office Hotel at 1pm.

Come & run with the Bulls in 2017! READY FOR ACTION: Mareeba Bulls second division coach Angelo Tatti, reserves coach Marcello Savaglio and ladies mentor Sandro Soncin
FROM junior players right up to the senior ranks, excitement is building at the Mareeba Bulls for season 2017.
Premiers coach and club technical director Alex Srhoj said there was an overwhelming sense of positivity at the Bulls, with player

interest sky high. “Numbers are strong across all grades,” he said. “It’s very positive, on and off the field.” The club has more than 200 players registered from Under 6’s right up to premiers. Senior teams playing include ladies, second division, reserves and premiers. “The ladies are doing very well. Their mentor Sandro Soncin has added some spark to the team,” Srhoj said. In a surprising but innovative move, the Bulls have pulled out of FNQ Football’s Under 18 youth competition and will instead field another second division team with the same young players. Srhoj said having a second second division team effectively created a pool of up-and-coming talent who could both gain senior playing ex-
perience and quicker promotion into higher leagues. “The kids are really looking forward to it because they get to step out of that youth environment and into adult football,” he said. “The team is no longer limited by age, so the advantage is it doesn’t matter who you are, they can step up and take your place and you can drop down and play second division.” On the junior front, Srhoj said he was happy with how things were panning out. “Every age group is stable. They’ve got great coaches.” In something different for this year, junior teams from Under 12s to Under 15s will be able to play some home games at Borzi Park alongside the senior teams. Occasionally, the Bulls will be able to run a “Super Saturday” event at their home ground, where junior teams play against the same club facing their senior counterparts later that day. Off the field, Srhoj said things were also looking rosy. “The level of sponsorship is good and the club’s looking fantastic,” he said. “It’s a good place to be at the moment.”

A word from the president… IF pre-season hype is anything to go on, we are in for an absolute cracker at Mareeba United Football Club. The enthusiasm within the club from Under 6’s through to the premier men’s side is infectious. Player numbers are the biggest they have been for many years. More than 200 keen boys and girls are training hard with excitement leading up to the season kick off on March 18th. Matt Perkes is our junior president and works closely with club technical director Alex Srhoj to ensure our kids have the best training facilities and equipment. In my fist year as club president, I have been fortunate to receive a lot of support from past president Tamara Srhoj.
Ladies ready to shine
With a large committee made up of mostly junior parents, the focus on growing our club is very strong. We have teams nominated in every age group this year, and in some cases, multiple teams per age group. We greatly value the support from our volunteer mums and dads who are stepping into coaching roles. Sandro Soncin is bringing his years of playing experience and passion for growing women's football at MUFC as mentor of the premier ladies team. The girls are focused this year and have the depth to shake up the competition. The only piece of silverware missing form Soncin's shelf is the women's trophy, which will be a motivating force for the ladies this
year. Meanwhile, the senior men have great numbers to work with in all divisions, welcoming a lot of new faces and the return of a few veterans which is sure to make things interesting. I would like to welcome all new 2017 sponsors to the club and express my sincere thanks to all existing sponsors for your wonderful and continued support. Let’s go, Bulls! Jodi Allen, MUFC President

A REJUVENATED Mareeba Bulls senior ladies team is set for big things in 2017. Ladies mentor and club veteran Sandro Soncin has been relishing the challenge of helping the side go from last season’s competition stragglers to fighting fit challengers. “I’ve been putting them through their paces and training them pretty hard, especially on the fitness side,” he said. “Last year they would run out of steam at the end. They didn’t have the legs, so we’re working to address that.” Soncin praised the attitude of the ladies at training so far. “They’re pretty self-motivated and disciplined,” he said. “They just need a bit more direction and belief and I believe they’ll be a competitive side.” Soncin, who also coaches the Bulls’ combined Under 13/14 girls side, said there were synergies in
Second div wants trifecta FIRST they won the premiership and then the Crad Evans Shield. But second division coach Angelo Tatti won’t be happy until he has the final piece of the puzzle – a grand final win. The team crashed out in the semi-finals last year after losing to Innisfail 2-1, but hope to go one better this season and bring home all three pieces of silverware. “That’s what we’re playing for this year,” he said. “Obviously everyone wants to win the premiership and the Crad Evans, but we want to win the grand final. We want all three. “We’re just not satisfied yet.” Tatti said he was particularly excited about the club’s latest additions, French players Aymeric (Rico) Dias and Raphael Adjedj. “They’ve got some go in them which will give our team a bit of a

his new role with the ladies team. “The ladies were without a committed coach last year and because I take on the junior girls, I thought it was a good opportunity to try and help that transition for the juniors moving into senior football at some stage,” he said. “It gives young girls something to aspire to.” Soncin said there was no reason why the ladies could not go all the way this season and win the Crad Evans Shield. “I always like to start off anything I do with a goal and I said to them I want to see their photo on the wall in the clubhouse,” he said. “That’s the objective. Rather than just turn up and play, I want them to go for the title. They can do it.” The ladies team will face Stratford at Borzi Park this Saturday from 3pm.
boost,” he said. “Raphael will play in midfield and Rico will play on the left flank.” The duo will help plug the gaps left by centre back Mario Terranova, sometime keeper Adam Libke and midfielder Angelo Tatti Jr. “I’ve got about 85 per cent of my team from last year,” Tatti said. “We’re hungry. The boys can’t wait till kick off and get themselves on the field.” In a new direction for the club, Mareeba has pulled out of FNQ Football’s Under 18 youth competition and will instead field another second division team with the same young players. Mareeba’s two second division sides will face off against Marlin Coast this Friday at Borzi Park. The first match kicks off at 6pm followed by the second match at 8pm.

Club welcome new and old faces A MIX of familiar faces and exciting new talent has been welcomed into the Mareeba Bulls’ senior sides for 2017. As the premiers team continues to reinvigorate itself, club veterans David Ruiz and David Srhoj have made their return to the top tier, while youngster Jason Haydon is thriving under the direction of coach Alex Srhoj. Ruiz, who was a vital part of the Bulls’ treble victory in 2015, said he relished the chance to play in a new-look team this season after a year off. “There’s such a good group of boys turning up. It makes training enjoyable, he said. “Two years ago, we had a lot of older heads in the team but now we’ve got a great mix. “You’ve still got the older guys and those who’ve taken over from some of us, like Steven Cater, Paul Ruiz and Adrian Madrid. The experienced forward, who also played in the FNQ Bulls state league team, said the pain of watching the Bulls lose last year’s grand final against Stratford was all the motivation he needed to strap on the boots again. “Seeing the boys lose last year wasn’t easy. Mareeba’s a pretty successful and proud club, he said. “But realistically, last year there were a lot of younger players who were just starting off, so there were still a lot of positives to take out of that season. “I think this year, and the next few years, if these younger players keep at it, they’re going to be in good position to win a few trophies.

Coach education and player development is key to the Mareeba Bulls continued success. And club technical director and premiers coach Alex Srhoj said the club will not take their foot off the peddle. “Creating an environment where the kids are developed, challenged and having fun is the key for them to keep coming back and enjoying being a Bull, said Srhoj. “It all starts with giving the coaches the support, knowledge and confidence to be able to deliver the education the players need. “It can be hard, because across the club there are different aspects the coaches need to focus on, but as long as the kids are enjoying their football and working hard, then we are moving forward. Srhoj added it was the work at home, behind the scenes, that will keep budding youngsters improving their game. “Our coaches only have the kids twice week, for about two hours. It’s the work the kids do at home in the backyard that will keep them improving, he said. “ As kids ourselves we spent four hours at the club kicking the ball a week, but we spent ten hours a week kicking the ball in the backyard and that’s where you can improve.
Meanwhile, Haydon, an Edge Hill junior who previously had stints at Leichhardt, FNQ Heat Under 20s and Brisbane team Grange Thistle, said it was an easy choice to come to Mareeba. “I grew up watching guys like Wayne Srhoj and David Ruiz, so for a chance to play with them, I couldn’t say no, he said. “I’ve heard good things about the club as in their culture and the way they treat players. “It’s a very together place to be and that’s been shown on the field with their success. Haydon, 22, praised the standard of training at the Bulls. “For a club level, this is unreal. We’ve got a good, big squad, so reserve grade’s going to be strong as well with depth there, he said. “That means there’s healthy competition to be playing in the premiers team week in, week out. The versatile midfielder has already been making waves for the club in their FFA Cup matches and can’t wait for the FNQ Premier League season to kick off this weekend. “I’m looking forward to playing with guys that will help me improve and hopefully, get some success for the club, Haydon said. “The goal is to play in the Crad Evans Shield and the grand final. You want to win everything. The Bulls first home game of the 2017 season is this Saturday against the Stratford Dolphins. The reserves play at 5pm, with the main game to kick off at 7pm.

Atherton bows out of Semi
ATHERTON’S cricket season is all over following their loss to Norths in the semi-final match at Loder Park last weekend. Atherton won the toss and elected to bat. The loss of early wickets cost the team dearly, with Gerard Fox caught out for 4 and Paul Nasser trapped in front for 19. Pete Sceresini (48) and Dan Parnell (28) consolidated but the loss of Parnell’s wicket when adjudged LBW left them at 5-85 and in trouble. Hadyn Steele (29) added some valuable runs at the death and closed the innings at 173. At stumps on Saturday, Norths were 1-23. Play resumed Sunday with Atherton fighting hard, but Norths reached the target off 59 overs with 5 wickets down. Norths continued the innings and were all out for 305.
Butts burn Devils
DOMINANT: Ciggy Butts’ Garrett Perks readies for a shot.
TALENTED: Kyle Bing Chew, Luke Lamborn, Darcy Houlihan, Nick Watson, Chris Adams and Lachlan Ford performed well at the U19 Peninsula Schoolboys cricket squad.
Region swings big at schoolboys comp SCHOOL cricketers from Mareeba and the Tablelands have proven they are among the best in the state after a strong showing at the Queensland School Sport Cricket State Championships earlier this month. St Stephens’ Kyle Bing Chew, Mareeba State High’s Chris Adams (vice-captain) and Lachlan Ford (captain) and Atherton State High’s Darcy Houlihan, Luke Lamborn and Nick Watson were part of an U19 Peninsula Schoolboys cricket side which were named runners up at the State Championships in Bundaberg. After going undefeated in all of their three matches, the team ended up losing on a points differential of just 0.3 to the Gold Coast. That would have been the equivalent to about another two wickets or 30 runs. But team parent Andrew Ford, who accompanied the squad down to Bundaberg, was full of praise for
the boys. “They gelled, fielded, batted and bowled well,” he said. “Everything just clicked for them as a group to win all three games.” Despite coming painfully close to clinching the Championships, the team dominated in their three matches, beating Darling Downs by 50 runs, defeating a President’s XI team comprising of shadow Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast players by about 55 runs and smashing past Central Queensland to win by seven wickets. “They were only one of two teams to win all three games,” Mr Ford said. “The Peninsula group have got the talent there. They just had to play well at the tournament and as a team and that’s what they did.”

AN understrength Ciggy Butts side have managed an impressive 56-46 win against competition favourites Red Devils in last week’s Mareeba Basketball Men’s Summer League clash. The Round 4 game was a cracker, despite Butts being forced to play with four men. Butts more than held their own in the first quarter, slipping early to a 4-0 deficit before Sten Laumets and Christy Perks helped turn the tables and go 8-6 up with just under four minutes left. Another four points followed for Butts but the Devils weren’t done, bagging a few layups of their own to bring scores to 12-8 by the end of the quarter. Devils’ lacklustre performance against an undermanned side was the wakeup call they needed come second quarter, rallying to lock scores at 18-all before Butts broke free with about four minutes to go. This time point guard Garrett Perks was the man of the quarter, putting in some big plays to help Butts go 21-17 up
by half-time. Warren Thompson stepped up for Butts in the third quarter, leading a huge charge alongside Garrett Perks to inflict more pain on the Devils, who had no answers as the score blew out to 31-19. But Devils’ Ben Festa combined with Layton Osborne and Juni Bordeos to mount a comeback of sorts, some slick passing and intercept plays helping them to get within striking distance of Butts and close out the third quarter 36-30. Butts jumped to a 40-31 lead in the first two minutes of the final quarter, Laumets and Garrett Perks causing all sorts of trouble for the Devils in the D. Devils’ Osborne twins continued to be impressive on the counter and around the hoop, but couldn’t break Butts’ lead as the game finished at 56-46. In last week’s other matches, Stingrays trounced Killer Bees 47-19, Barras defeated Green Hornets 54-45 and the Blue Angels pipped Spare Parts 49-44.

Gators go one up against Atherton MAREEBA Gladiators have got off to a winning start this season after a comprehensive 30-6 victory against arch rivals Atherton at Davies Park. There was no shortage of anticipation leading up to the match last Saturday night after Mareeba trounced the Roosters 52-4 in a trial game just two weeks earlier. A scrappy start to the first half caused a number of cheap turnovers between both sides, Atherton piling on the pressure early and looking dangerous near the try line. But the Gators held firm and struck first around the 12th minute, courtesy of five-eighth Sonny Kerr. Boche Satrick promptly converted to go 6-0 up. A line break and blistering run by Mareeba’s Danny Misa looked destined for the try line just minutes later, only for him to drop the ball as he crossed. Some slick passing on Mareeba’s left flank led to the home side’s next try of the night, with interchange forward Shana Aue crashing over to make it 10-0, Satrick missing the conversion. Poor completion rates and multiple handling errors by both sides dogged the game, despite several impressive combination plays and line breaks which could have become tries. Hooker Clint Posselt was a clear standout, his fancy footwork continuing to terrorise Atherton’s defence. But a rant at the ref towards the end of the first half after being penalised for holding down a tackled player too long resulted in Posselt being sent to the sin-bin. The Roosters proceeded to throw everything at Mareeba as the home side’s stubborn defence held out. Unable to contain himself, fullback Joey Burchell was the next to be sent off by the ref
after some backchat, the Gladiators now reduced to just 11 men. The pressure was too much as Atherton’s Rhys Brady crossed over for a try in the dying seconds of the half, ably converted by fullback Jacob Rivett. Waiting on Posselt and Burchell to return from the sin bin, an understrength Gladiators side took to the field in the second half but wasted little time getting back on the scoreboard after Ricky Schein crossed to go 16-6 up following another Satrick conversion. Centre Tommy Hughes was next with another try barely four minutes later, co-captain Maddie Oosen and Henare Maeva also crossing that half to close out the game 30-6. In true rivalry fashion, tensions boiled over on a few occasions resulting in Satrick and Rooster Togatule Kose being sent off following a nasty spear tackle by Mareeba. Satrick faced the judiciary on Tuesday. While happy with the win, Mareeba coach Tye Ingebrigtsen admitted his men had work to do ahead of their home clash with Innisfail this Saturday. “I think we gave away too many penalties,” he said. “We were trying to push the pass too much. Instead of being so over-excited and trying to do things straight away, we’ve just got to take a bit

of control with each other and slow it down a little bit. “I thought our defence was great. At one stage we had 11 players on the field, so to only let six points in with the amount of ball they had was great.” Ingebrigtsen praised Sonny Kerr’s performance, with the youngster also nabbing the Eddie (Tractor) Fraser Perpetual Trophy for man of the match.
Meanwhile, co-captain Ian King is expected to return from injury for round two. Atherton coach Dean Howard was happy with the effort shown by his young side, but lamented the number of errors. “Our ball control and our fitness let us down a little bit, but if we keep working hard, we’ll get there in the end,” he said. The Roosters will play Ivanhoes in Atherton this Saturday night.
Bulls triumph in epic Cup clash A LAST gasp goal in extra time has secured Mareeba passage through to the next round of the FFA Cup after a heart-stopping 3-2 win against Stratford on Saturday night. Missing five key senior players including former A-league star Wayne Srhoj (suspension) and experienced forward Paul Ruiz (injury), the Bulls were forced to make do with a number of youngsters. The grand final rematch between the FNQ Premier League rivals promised plenty of spark, as momentum swung to and from either side for most of the first half at Nick Brko field. Stratford striker Michael Van Hooran was constant menace to Mareeba’s back line, while the Bulls continued to exploit the home side’s left flank. Both teams had a bevy of chances before a beautiful curling strike by Bryson Wells at the 24th minute broke the deadlock. Stratford’s Simeon Malahoff returned serve not long after, pouncing on a deflected ball by Bulls keeper Adrian Vedelgago to level scores at 1-all. The Bulls defence held out for the rest of the half as Stratford continued to push hard. The Dolphins came out firing in the second half, conjuring up a goal within the first minute courtesy of Malahoff once again, as the Bulls struggled to answer. Several more chances to equalise followed before a free kick
just outside the box was flicked on past the keeper by Robert Pendenza to bring scores back to 2-all by the 61st minute. A Stratford counter attack almost made it 3-2 as wingers Ossie Kamara and Kanjia Kamara terrorised Mareeba’s defence with their pace and footwork. But the visitors gained some much needed grit on the field when striker David Srhoj was subbed on with less than 15 minutes to go. Paintballers mix it with nation’s best A PAINTBALL team comprising of mostly Tablelands locals has impressed on the national stage after shooting their way to third place. The FNQ Fury team recently flew to Sydney to compete in the first round of a four-event series of national tournaments for 2017. Competing at a semi-professional level, the competition was hard, the games fast and the heat was on. After a gruelling day of battling it out with the nation’s best, FNQ Fury entered the finals with a chance to compete for first. However, they would finish the weekend in third

place overall, which still puts them in good stead for this season. FNQ Fury co-captain Zach Reid said his team was still hungry for more. “While we celebrated the result, we have now returned with renewed motivation to train and improve to better the results at round two in June,” he said. The team play a competitive variant of paintball known as “speedball” and train every month at Cairns Paintball, based in Kuranda. Cairns Paintball will host a come and try day for people interested in speedball on March 26.
