Wall of Hope unveiled at Centenary Park P3

The countdown is on with just days to go until the Tablelands, along with the rest of the State will be a single-use plastic bag free zone.

The plastic bag ban comes into effect on Sunday July 1, from which point shoppers will either have to take their own bags in store, or purchase a reusable one.

Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt says that although there will be an adjustment period, she is thrilled that the government have made the move to ban plastic bags in a bid to support the environment.

“I’ve been for a visit down to the MERF

(Portsmith Material Recovery Facility) in Cairns when I became a councillor,” she said.

“They do all this digestion process and they get a component out of it that goes back to the land which is fantastic, but what comes up from that MERF is a slop of grey plastic bags which ends up back in our landfill.”

Cr Wyatt said she has a “passion for the future” and has advocated strongly for the introduction of more recycling and environmental initiatives within the shire.

She said she hopes shoppers will see the benefit of the ban.

“It’s going to be a big shock to some people,” she said.

Lotto win for retired couple A married couple from Mareeba couldn’t contain their happiness last week after discovering they won division one in the Gold Lotto draw.

The ecstatic pair held one of the 10 division one winning entries nationally in the Saturday, June 16 draw. Each entry took home a prize of $417,040.52.

The retired couple plan to share their windfall with their children and grandchildren.

“We’ve been playing those numbers for about 20 years!” the winning woman said. “Some are family birthdays and ages. They are numbers we play all the time.

“We never thought for a moment we’d win the big one. A few years ago, we won $1,000 and we were so thrilled. We’re over the moon with this.”

The Mareeba residents, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their entry from Mareeba Discount Drug Store, Mareeba Plaza, Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

Proving that you can be a pin up model no matter what age you are, a group of aged locals have grouped together to show off their assets with the aim of raising money for Mareeba Hospital.

Dad’s Army is a group of elderly gentlemen that got together six years ago to tackle the challenge of the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

Fitter than most men half their age, the men decided to up the ante and boost their fundraising efforts by additionally creating a 2019 calendar stuffed

with skin shots of themselves.

The tongue in cheek collaboration will see all money raised given to the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation.

Dad’s Army is made up of local ex-servicemen with a mix of Navy, Army and Air Force veterans.

Ages vary in the calendar with the majority of the models in their 70s, except for one 92 year old.

“We tried to do it tastefully,” the men laughed.

Calendars are $20 each and can be picked up from various outlets across town including The Express Newspaper.

Emergency services recognised at awards Tablelands emergency services employees and staff were recognised for their dedication to the job at an awards ceremony in Cairns on Wednesday.

Fire fighters from Yungaburra, Atherton and Dimbulah, along with Tablelands police officers were awarded medals for their ‘outstanding contributions’ to their respective services.

Yungaburra Fire Brigade Captain Ashley Cupitt received the 3rd Clasp for his Diligent and Ethical Service Medal for over 40 years of Service. The medal recognises members of the QFES workforce, paid and volunteer, who distinguished themselves over a prolonged period of time, through commitment to ethical standards, diligence and integrity. This medal was not granted as a ‘right’ by virtue of long service.

Endoscopy not new to Mareeba

Memories of loved ones who have lost and battled with cancer have been immortalised at Centenary Park, Mareeba, via a project that was only possible thanks to the generosity of the community.

The Wall of Hope was officially unveiled on Saturday by Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore, who said the $8000 raised through the project could help to

find a cure for cancer.

“This will bring hope to our community,” he said. “(The wall) is established here as a sign of hope for the future and a sign for all of us who at one time or another have been stricken with this dreadful scourge we call cancer. It comes in many forms and the world is closing in on it but it can only do so with the well wishes and the assistance and the funding from you.”

The project was the brainchild of Vilma Mori-

coni, who rallied the community to buy bricks with engravings of their lovedones names in memory of their fight with the disease.

All of the money raised through the sale of the bricks was donated to Cancer Council Queensland, with local contractors stepping forward to offer their time for free to build the wall.

Mrs Moriconi said the project, which was four years in the making was “long, trying and extremely

challenging”.

“Our journey with cancer started 21 years ago when my mother in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer,” she said. “Mum never got a chance to lose her hair or try some chemo.

Instead was given an estimated time frame in which to enjoy her time with everyone that she loves.

“When I was given the opportunity to help the Cancer Council as a Hope Ambassador, I jumped at the chance to make a differ-

ence.

“Thinking outside the square with the help of my wonderful family, the idea for the Wall of Hope began.”

Berni Mckean regional fundraising manager for North Queensland said more than 1,430 people each year are diagnosed with cancer in Far North Queensland.

“This is why we are so extremely grateful for fundraising initiatives like the Wall of Hope,” she said.

Woolworths in Atherton already removed single use plastic bags from its store before the July 1 deadline.

Coles in Mareeba is giving its shoppers the option to

have a stylish and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags available at the checkouts in the form of reusable bags designed

by Aussie kids. The bags are environmentally friendly because they can be used over and over again. Then, at the end of their lives, they can be recycled at REDcycle bins at Coles supermarkets.

Fourteen school children were selected as the winners of Coles’ bag design competition, which was

instigated as part of Coles’ transition away from single-use plastic bags in all supermarkets by July 1.

The plastic bag ban is not the only environmentally-friendly initiative to hit the Tablelands this year.

The Government is also set to introduce the Container Refund Scheme on November 1 which will see a 10 cent refund provided for eligible, empty drink containers between 150ml and 3L in size that are returned to a participating container

refund point.

The introduction of the State-wide scheme will give people an incentive to collect and return containers for recycling, in exchange for a refund payment.

Queensland’s recycling rate is one of the lowest in Australia, currently sitting at around 44 per cent.

“That’s another great one that I’m excited about,” said Cr Wyatt.

“There will be entrepreneurs that surface out of this and I think our litter

problem will be solved as kids will be walking around picking it up for money.

That’s a monetary contribution for you to be responsible with plastics, so it’s all about recycling so that’s what makes me excited.”

Mareeba Shire Council is still contemplating the introduction of kerb side recycling. There are recycling options at its landfill sites across the shire. Tablelands Regional Council has fortnightly kerb side recycling collection.

News that endoscopy services will be re-introduced into Mareeba Hospital was welcomed by members of Save the Mareeba Hospital Services Action Group (SMHAG) despite the fact that they say the procedures should never have been axed in the first place.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board announced earlier this month that endoscopy services would be approved for Mareeba, stating that building works needed to be completed to provide additional space for the recovery after a patient has their procedure.

But the group that has fought hard for months to get Mareeba Hospital operating at what they believe should be full capacity, say the service is not new to Mareeba as it was already up and running 10 years ago.

“They were provided on a regular basis over 10 years ago but for some unknown reason were stopped,” said SMHAG spokesperson Denis McKinley.

“This is exactly what our group have been saying since our lobbying commenced in early 2017 was to put back those services that were vital to the health and well being of our 22,000 residents of Mareeba Shire Local Government area.”

Executive Director Rural and Remote Services, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Gabrielle Honeywood said the re-inclusion of the endoscopy services at Mareeba was part of a wider plan to provide more services closer to home for rural patients.

“More broadly, the Health Service is undertaking a review of rural hospitals including Mareeba, Atherton and Innisfail and will develop a business case on what services can be delivered closer to people’s homes, where it is safe and sustainable to do so, and to reduce the reliance on the Cairns Hospital,” she said.

Mr McKinley said he hopes this is the start of more services available locally for Mareeba residents.

“Our group now look forward to the inclusion of a Dialysis unit and Chemotherapy unit in the Mareeba District Hospital – The Sate Government has also approved $5 million dollars for the purchase and installation of a CT scanner for the Mareeba District Hospital in the very near future,” he said.

“I am sure we are now slowly moving in the right direction to seeing vast improvements to the health services available within the Mareeba District Hospital.”

Farmers breathe sigh of relief

Mareeba and Dimbulah irrigators can breathe a sigh of relief after SunWater announced its predicted water allocations for the next financial year.

Predictions indicate that Tableland growers will have access to 100 per cent of their full allocation, which could have a positive impact on production.

“It’s great news but we’re not really surprised,” said Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Council chairman Joe Moro.

“We were expecting it to be confirmed after Tinaroo got past the 75 per cent mark.”

The dam level is currently at 93.7 per cent.

Predicted allocations indicate the percentage of an irrigation customer’s purchased water entitlement expected to be made available for use within a water year.

The figures are calculated on the amount of water

in storage combined with variable factors such as evaporation, seepage and use.

SunWater Chief Executive Officer Nicole Hollows said healthy water allocations across most schemes would provide a boon to irrigators.

“Pleasingly most scheme allocations have remained at 100 per cent, while we’ve seen some significant increases in Cunnamulla and Mareeba-Dimbulah,” Ms Hollows said.

“We understand this is a difficult time for some customers, as low allocations can have a significant impact on their business.”

For our local farmers, however, the wet season was a successful one.

“Growers know they have their full water allocation for them to use for the next 12 months, they don’t have to worry if it will rain or not,” said Mr Moro.

2.5 per cent rate rise for Mareeba residents Mareeba Shire Council passed down its annual budget at last week’s council meeting, with Mayor Tom Gilmore describing it as “fully balanced”.

Shire residents will be faced with a 2.5 per cent rate rise next financial year which Cr Gilmore said was “only marginally above the CPI index”.

“We’ve gone for 2.5 per cent to ensure we are able to seal the roads and do the work that we are required to do. That’s what that’s all about,” he said.

“It’s not something that happens overnight. There’s an enormous amount of help that goes into these things to ensure that we continue to provide the level of services that are required for our community and we’re doing that and maintaining a cost situation for the community that they can afford.

“If you don’t stay with the cost price index then you’re going backwards and we won’t do that and neither will we ever bring down a deficit budget, so it’s a very fine balancing act and I’m very pleased with it.”

The $64m budget contains over $44m to cover

operations and a capital expenditure of almost $20m.

Over the next 12 months, Council will invest $12.9m to improve and maintain roads and bridges across the Shire. Close to $18m will be spent on water, waste and sewerage while community facilities, libraries and culture will receive a $4m boost.

Cr Gilmore said there were many exciting projects coming up for the shire.

“The work that we’re doing on the Mareeba aerodrome is so exciting,” he said. “There’s about 20 acres of land out there that’s being laid out now into a proper aerodrome and I’m very pleased about that, but it’s the long term planning that we’re working on – the water supply, the sewerage supply, the road works around the place, the town beautification.

“A good and competent council is thinking about it all of the time, they’re bringing together ideas that might enhance the lifestyle of our community without putting them out of their houses with costs, so it’s a fine balancing act and it’s one that we’ve managed rather well.”

Visitor app will propel Kuranda into the future

Mareeba Shire Council will soon be utilising modern technology to help propel Kuranda into the future.

A Historical outlook on “The Wiltshire Moonrakers” Here’s a little on the Regiment that my grandfather Charles Tyler, Father Jack Tyler and I all served in.

The Wiltshire Regiment, the Duke of Edinburgh’s first regiment, was formed in 1756 as the 62 Regiment of Foot and were the first marines on ships between England and the Americas.

At an old fort in Ireland in 1760, nine officers and 100 men were attacked by a force of over 1000 French.

After running out of ammo they used the buttons from their jackets to fire on the enemy, unfortunately they had to surrender.

In 1841 the regiment was sent to Australia on convict escort, residing for about 16 years except for stints in New Zealand for the Mauri wars.

The regiment also served at Anzac Cove Gallipoli where half the battalion were killed.

In 1806 regiments were allowed to choose their own headdress badges, and to wear it on their shako plate with their regiment’s

number in the centre.

The 62nd Foot, at that time in Sicily, adopted the Maltese cross.

One of the reasons given for this choice was that there were six old English families of the name of Wiltshire whose coat of arms or crest included a cross.

By 1828 regimental badges had become official and the 62nd’s was shown as ‘Maltese Cross’, although not strictly correct, was used by the Regiment until 1923 when the proper description ‘Cross Pate’’ was adopted.

The 2nd, 62nd foot arrived in Spain to join Wellington’s Army in October 1813 after being placed in Lord Aylmer’s brigade known as ‘The Independents’.

Their first taste of fighting was in the Pyrenees, with the main action taking place in a wooded area in the grounds of the Mayor of Biarritz at Barrouilhet.

The 2nd, 62nd Foot captured and lost the house several times, taking part in several engagements round Bayonne where during the course of the siege over 600 men were lost.

The battalion was sent back to Vera, returning several months later to help repulse the last desperate French sortie.

Two Battle Honours, Peninsula and Nive, were earned during this campaign, though neither were awarded until some years later. The 2nd, 62nd returned to Ireland after the war.

The regiment earned 89 battle honours from around the world and I’m proud to say that at 96 years of age our commander Prince Philip is still with us even though the regiment doesn’t exist.

OBITUARY

Droving contractor was well respected A well respected man who spent his life in many occupations in western and north Queensland passed away recently in Atherton.

Arthur Hanson spent his final years at Tolga and succumbed to a medical condition at the Atherton Hospital on May 22, 2018 aged 84.

Arthur was born in Burketown just off the Gulf of Carpentaria on April 11, 1934 to Olief and Lorry Hanson. They separated two years’ latter in 1944.

As soon as Arthur turned fourteen in 1948, he went to work as a lad porter for the Cloncurry Railway Station.

Arthur was called up for National Service in the 3rd intake 1953, where he trained in Brisbane at the Wacol Army Camp with the 11th National Service Training Battalion. After serving his 98 days of National Service he went back to work for Queensland Railways in Mt. Isa as a guard. In 1955 he married his childhood sweetheart Margret Mummery and they lived in Mt. Isa for a year. Arthur accepted a promotion from shunter to shunter-in-charge on their move back to Cloncurry.

In 1961, Margret bought the lease on the Blue Bird café in Cloncurry.

The first of their two children, Ean Robert make his appearance on the March 7, 1956 followed by his sister Desire Joanne on March 3, 1958.

In 1963 Arthur came home on one of his slack droving periods to find the café closed and no family to greet him. Apparently, Margret had shut up shop and moved to Darwin. His marriage was over.

In 1970, he began to romance Mavis Bauer. Arthur joined the family of Mavis, her son Dennis aged 22 years and her daughter Sandra aged 11.

Arthur made an honest woman out of Mavis in 1977. Arthur and Mavis stayed at Carsland Station for two years. Mavis was sick of their nomadic lifestyle and eventually talked Arthur into moving to the Atherton Tablelands.

In 1985 they leased the Tolga Hotel for six years.

When the lease was up they brought a house in Tolga and both semi-retired.

In 1992 Arthur and Mavis delivered bread to Woolworths and to cafés

all around the tablelands.

In 1993 Arthur and Mavis delivered papers for the Cairns Post all around the Tablelands for six months.

His beloved Mavis passed away on the March 21, 2010.

Arthur joined Herberton bowls club in 2010 and became a reluctant president from 2014 to 2015. For many of these years Arthur framed lattice at Payless Timbers, Tolga up until 2016.

In recognition of their military service, Arthur was one of 32 people presented

their Anniversary of Medal 1951 – 1972 by The Hon Bob Katter MP, Federal Member for Kennedy in 2002.

In his final years Arthurwas regularly visited by branch chaplain Mick Grant, Mareeba. Mick also presided over Arthur’s funeral service and Branch members were joined by the Herberton Bowls Club members to form a Guard of Honour outside the Mountain View Chapel before internment in the Atherton Lawn Cemetery on May 28, 2018.

Thousands raised for Cancer Council

Mareeba’s bid to be home to Qantas’ pilot academy has not been successful, it was announced last week.

Qantas announced their top nine regional cities in Australia in the running to house their proposed Pilot Academy on Friday, with Mareeba missing out on a spot. However Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council will continue to advocate Mareeba Airport as an ideal regional flight training and maintenance facility.

Small win for Koah airstrip neighbours

A Cairns engineer has had an application to amend to his flying schedule from his Koah property knocked back by Mareeba Shire councillors, but the furore between he and his neighbours is still ongoing.

Pat English has been no stranger to the council chambers in Mareeba in recent months as he has sought the right to fly his planes – including a replica spitfire – to and from his weekend residence on Fantin Road.

Back in March he was granted approval to increase the number of flights made from his property despite 169 objections, angering nearby residents who say the planes are a noise nuisance.

Now they’re claiming

that the approval was based on inaccurate information.

“In frustration, we recently sought the advice of an independent aviation expert and he found that the flight plans submitted are not permitted under Civil Aviation Regulations,” said Nadine O’Brien.

“Koah residents are angry that this take off flight plan was still in both the planner’s and acoustic engineer’s report shown to Councillors when they voted on the application in March.

“We believe if the usual take off flight plan had been included, instead of the circuit, that Council may have rejected the application.

They would then have seen clearly how close the aircraft fly to residential houses to the south and north at take off.”

Mayor Tom Gilmore

said that an aircraft’s flight path was not a council matter and what “once the wheels are off the ground then CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) were responsible.”

At last Wednesday’s ordinary council meeting Mr English sought to amend his flying schedule to allow up to three flights per day, subject to a limit of up to seven flights per calendar week, but councillors voted against the request and the motion was lost.

“He said he would prefer to be able to fly on any one day in a week, three flights a day but not increase the number of flights,” said Cr Gilmore after the meeting.

“Council considered that quite carefully. I know that my councillors have been working on that behind the scenes and they rejected his application in favour of the

submissions from the people in Koah who chose to defer.”

Despite the decision neighbouring residents are still unhappy that Mr English had his flight allowance increased and say they have written to the minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick.

“We’re not happy that it was approved at all because in the beginning it was based on false information,” said Julie Brunt.

“It appears there was some bias towards the developer. To have an approval with an unlawful flight plan in it was wrong.”

Mr English said he didn’t believe the noise of the planes was an issue and said he would be considering his options after last week’s council’s decision.

These last four years have been a time for Council to establish clear vision for the future of the Shire and that of course includes safe and reliable water supplies, waste water treatment systems with the highest standard and transport infrastructure which is suitable for the purposes of the community.

Featured in this Budget are capital expenditure of $19.2 million, maintenance of our roads and built facilities $6.6 million and sporting and community beautification through parks and gardens of $2.8 million. In this coming year $1.9 million will be expended in Kuranda sourced from the Kuranda Infrastructure Fund as we push to improve and to maintain Kuranda as a premier tourism destination.

WORKS FOR QUEENSLAND

COUNCIL continues to carry out projects under the second round of the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

HODZIC ROAD, BIBOOHRA: Works on the extension of the Hodzic Road causeway are now complete. The project included extending the northern end of the existing causeway by 10m and the southern end by 70m.

CLACHERTY ROAD, JULATTEN: The installation of a new concrete causeway at Clacherty Road, Julatten was completed last month.

TINAROO CREEK ROAD, MAREEBA: Upgrades on Tinaroo Creek Road are now complete. Works included widening and resealing sections of the road and associated kerb and channel work.

MAREEBA SWIMMING POOL: Works are progressing well on the upgrades of the administration and kiosk facilities at the Mareeba Swimming Pool. The refurbishment project is scheduled to be finished in early August.

Lime growers fight Mexican imports Far North Queensland lime growers are bracing for a new threat, with moves to allow limes into Australia from the world’s largest exporter of the citrus variety, Mexico.

Twelve months after formally opposing the importation of Tahitian limes from five South Pacific nations including Vanuatu and Tonga – which was recommended to go ahead – the region’s growers are facing a new challenge.

The Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is conducting a risk analysis in response to a formal market access request for fresh limes from Mexico which exported some 1.1 million tonnes of the fruit in 2015.

FNQ Growers President Joe Moro said the region’s lime growers had grave concerns about the impact the proposed importation would have on the local industry.

“Our $31 million citrus industry is at stake, along with the jobs and livelihoods of hundreds of farmers and workers that it employs,” Mr Moro said.

“Any importation comes with significant biosecu-

rity risks which have the potential to decimate a local industry, if proper and stringent protocols are not put in place.

“Unfortunately, the onus to protect our local industry is placed in the hands of growers in another country to do the right thing and there’s no guarantee that this will happen.”

The department’s preliminary risk analysis outlines about 13 pests and diseases of quarantine concern, including fruit flies, Asian citrus psyllid and fungi.

The department said the pests were the same as those assessed previously for other horticultural goods “for which risk management measures are established”.

The department recommended fresh limes be imported from the South Pacific nations “subject to a range of biosecurity import conditions”.

“As growers we take our biosecurity obligations and potential risks very seriously.

“At this stage we only have some idea what biosecurity risks we are facing from Mexico, as more will be revealed when the draft

report is released early in 2019.

“However, we will be strongly urging the department via a submission opposing the importation to microscopically consider all potential threats in order to protect the Australian citrus industry.

“We need to be protecting own farmers.”

Tougher penalties for driving offences leading to death or serious injury The Palaszczuk Government has passed new laws in Parliament today increasing maximum penalties for some driving offences which result in death or grievous bodily harm.

“Every life lost on Queensland roads is a tragedy and community concern has been heightened understandably following a number of incidents where Queenslanders have lost loved ones at the hands of careless or

dangerous drivers,” Mr Bailey said.

“These incidents are tragic and I extend my sincere sympathies to everyone affected by them.

“After thorough consultation with stakeholders, including a number of families who have lost loved ones in road crashes, the Palaszc-

zuk Government has passed legislation to significantly increase the penalties for certain driving offences resulting in death or grievous bodily harm."

1. Place the shredded zucchini in a colander and sprinkle it lightly with salt. Let the zucchini sit for 10 minutes then using your hands, squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Soccer academy turns one year

AVS Football Academy is celebrating its first birthday and founder Alex Srhoj cannot be more wrapt with how the academy has progressed.

“It has been such an amazing journey so far, it was always a dream to be able to give more back to the kids in the region and the support from the area has been fantastic,” Srhoj said.

“The kids have been outstanding over the past 12 months. I can’t believe it is already one year”.

Term two for 2018 is drawing to a close this week, with term three starting the first week back at school and with registrations already strong, Srhoj still has room for new and old kids from across the Tablelands to join from six to 16.

“It’s an opportunity for kids from the across the Tablelands, whether you play for the Bulls, Barras or Atherton Eagles, its all

about the kids, everyone is welcome” Srhoj stated.

As part of the first birthday celebrations, AVS has created its own AVS Player Bursary, with applications open now for any current aspiring footballer across the Tablelands to apply.

“At AVS, we understand the financial restraints placed on families due to their very active and eager future sport stars, and because of this, we have offered this bursary enabling your child to continue their participation in the sport we all love – football,” Srhoj said.

The academy itself is designed to help kids develop their football skills from first touch to oneon-ones, but also working on player decision making and creating an environment where the kids can enjoy themselves and express their belief in their

ability.

Alex’s passion is second to none, his commitment to the kids and his commitment to the sport in the region is the driving force behind the creation of AVS. Alex welcomes kids of all ages and development levels, looking to create an environment where all kids are enjoying the sport, whilst being developed and tested at their level.

Cost for the academy will be $225 for the 10 week cycle, with spots limited to 10 kids per session. Session times will be after school on Monday and Wednesdays in Mareeba and Friday afternoon in Atherton (depending on numbers). Pride to face Blackhawks in Atherton Last time the Northern Pride and Townsville Blackhawks went head-tohead, the Pride come out victorious with a 26 – 6 win.

However, with the race for a position in the finals heating up, it will be interesting to see if the Pride can do it again or will the tables turn.

On Saturday June 30, the Townsville Blackhawks and Northern Pride will travel to Atherton to battle it out at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. Not only will this game decide whether the

Northern Pride will take over the Blackhawks position at the top of the QRL Intrust Super Cup ladder, but it is the penultimate game for the Foley Shield.

Playing for the Blackhawks in the Number 10 Jersey will be former Atherton junior and senior player Rodney Griffin who returns to home turf. Bringing a wealth of experience to the Blackhawks front-row, only time will tell if this hardhitting prop can power the Blackhawks to an inaugural

premiership.

Griffin has played 13 international games for PNG and has been a Q Cup regular since 2005, starting with the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls before linking with the Northern Pride and then Tweed Heads.

In 2016 Griffin was part of the Wests Tigers system and then went on to sign a one-year contract deal with the Bulldogs in 2017.

Current Blackhawks Coach Kristian Woolf has long been a fan of Griffin

and finally got to him to at the end of 2017.

Atherton Roosters will also be playing Cairns Ivanhoes. Saturday June 30 will be an action-packed day for Atherton with four big games of football being played. Gates open at 2pm – Reserve Grade Roosters v Ivanhoes at 3pm, U20s Pride v Blackhawks at 4:30pm, ISC Pride v Blackhawks at 6pm and the A Grade Rooster v Ivanhoes at 7:30pm.

FNQ BMX Championships

Atherton BMX Club held the Far North Queensland Zone Championships on the 9th of June. With 195 riders from all clubs competing and out of that number, Atherton had 50 riders that could compete for a plate. The Atherton BMX Club were able to gain 37 new plate holders out of the 149 plates that were up for grabs.

The Series Leaders for Atherton BMX Club were Asha Smith – 10yr Girls, Alex Twidale – 11 Boys, Sienna Ferraro – 11 Girls, Matthew Nielsen – 12 Boys, Kaleb Nielsen – 14yr Boys, Ryle Moses – 16yr Boys. In second place were Kirra Twidale – 9yr Girls,

Bailey Page – 9yr Boys, Aiden Smith – 13yr Boys, Alex Bozsan – 14yr Girls.

Big win for Gators

It was a big weekend of football for the Gladiators with wins for both the reserve and A grade teams against Edmonton in an away game show down.

A grade coach Matt Wakefield said he was really happy for the boys after they beat the Cairns team 33-10.

“It was a positive win and they had a really good game from start to finish,” he said.

“The first half was really pleasing. We held on to the ball which is something we’ve had trouble with in the past.”

The result marks the second win for the Mareeba

team which has been struggling to come out on top all season.

But Wakefield said he thinks his players are gaining some momentum and confidence to continue putting in strong performances going forward.

“I didn’t change too much with our structure,

except that I put two young kids on debut – William Brown and Rowan Grobes,” said Wakefield.

“They’re only 17 and 18 but these players are part of the club’s future so it’s great to give them a go.”

This weekend the Gators will take on the Cairns Kangaroos away – a team that

they have played once already this season.

“Last time we played they beat us,” said Wakefield.

“They’re a good side but we’re out for a bit of redemption. If we can hold on to the ball and we’re in with a good chance.”

Roosters record another big win The Atherton Roosters have overcome a slow start to power home with a 46-16 win over the Tully Tigers in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League match at the Tully Showgrounds.

Half Caleb Foster and hooker Jack Willis both scored doubles in the nine try to three victory which keeps the Roosters on top of the points table.

Tully enjoyed a strong opening and a early lead of 6-0 and maintained their lead 10-6 through to the 29th minute. Two quick tries just before halftime pushed the Roosters in front 18-10 for the break.

Caleb Foster’s try soon after the restart signalled the Roosters intentions and they went on to hit the line for another five tries. Tully did look dangerous with

repeated attacks but the Roosters defence was quick to shut them down. Injuries had forced the Roosters to make several changes before the match with young guns Matt Whybird and Mae Mani included and both having strong games in the top grade.

The Roosters under 19 side have cemented a spot in the top three following Saturday’s 24-18 win over

Tully. Winger Kyle Wyatt went over for three tries while Riley Bell and Paul Nasser both scored one each.

Tully took the reserve grade points 40-4 over the Roosters.

This Saturday, the action returns to Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium with the Roosters up against Ivanhoes in two grades (reserves and firsts) and the

Northern Pride also playing their QRL Intrust Cup match against the Townsville Blackhawks.

Atherton’s under 19 side will play their premiership game against Ivanhoes at 2pm on Sunday as the curtain raiser to the NRL match between the NQ Cowboys and the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Barlow Park.

Bulls fight out draw with ladder leaders The Mareeba Bulls once again showed plenty of promise against the ladder leading Marlin Coast Rangers on Sunday. Leading 2-1 at halftime, only to walk away with their second successive draw, finishing the game 2-all.

The Bulls went into the match on the back of last weekend’s impressive, but heartbreaking 3-3

draw against the Stratford Dolphins. The Bulls went behind early with Rangers striker Liam White scoring on the 15th minute mark to make it 1-0.

But Mareeba’s own Liam Leporati then hit back in the 23rd minute and Robert Pendenza’s 25th minute goal gave the away team a 2-1 lead which they held until the break.

White scored for the Rangers in the first minute of the second half to bring the scores to 2-2. The Bulls held on for another creditable draw against teams higher up in the competition ladder.

The Bulls reserve grade have dropped their first points in over a month drawing drawing 0-0 against the Rangers. The

draw still keeps the Bulls clear in second place, while on Friday night up in Atherton, the Bulls youth came away with a 5-1 win over the Atherton Ealges with former Atherton junior Dylan Cummings scoring all five goals.

On Friday night the Bulls 1st division boys won 6-2 against the Leichardt Lions with new signing

Haydon Russo scoring one on his debut for the Bulls, while the club’s 2nd dvision boys won 7-2 over the Dimbulah Barras.

This weekend the 1st division and 2nd division boys are at home on Friday night with games from 6.30pm. While the premier mens, reserves and youth travel down to Leichhardt lions on Saturday.
