Chillagoe to get a transfer station

Mareeba Shire Council voted today to convert the waste facility at Chillagoe from a landfill to a transfer station.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Alan Pedersen said the current Chillagoe landfill trench would reach capacity by early 2019.

“When this trench is full, Council will need a solution for the waste that is received by Chillagoe landfill,” he said.

“Council looked at a couple of options to manage waste in Chillagoe from 2019 and beyond and decided the most efficient and cost-effective option was to convert the waste facility from a landfill to a transfer station.”

While funding has been approved under the 2018/2019 capital works budget for construction of a new landfill cell at Chillagoe, Council agreed to use the funds to convert the existing site to a waste transfer facility proving better value for money.

There will be no change to the opening hours of the transfer station at this stage. The facility is open on Tuesdays (2pm5pm), Thursdays (9am-2pm) and Saturdays (9am - 12pm).

Cooktown grant program

Cook Shire council’s grants programs have been streamlined to make the process easier for applicants.

Council’s community grants have been divided into three streams, the Small Grants Program, Sponsorship Program and Donations Program.

The Community Small Grants Program aims to provide assistance to local groups and organisations to develop and upgrade existing facilities, buy equipment, support event delivery, promote conservation and support business opportunities.

Up to $5000 is available to applicants under Round One, which opens on July 20 and closes on August 24, 2018.

Mowerman’s mission to protect children

A 73-year-old man that has pushed a lawn mower across Australia for charity, made his way through the Tablelands over the last week, attracting the attention of Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella.

Cr Paronella stepped out of his office last week to greet ‘Mowerman’ Claude Harvey who is trying to raise funds and awareness of Bravehearts and child protection.

Claude is spending 21 days travelling more than 800km, stopping at towns and cities along the way to tell the communities about the importance of child protection and encourage their support for Bravehearts and White Balloon Day. Having already raised a staggering $1million to help Bravehearts protect Australian kids; Claude has set his sights on reaching a new $2million target by 2022 and is hoping to raise $20,000 during his 2018 Far North Queensland tour.

“Although fundraising is a big part of my tours, raising awareness of this horrendous crime among as many communities as possible to help prevent child sexual assault, is my primary mission,” said Claude.

“If I can save just one child from this crime that harms 1 in 5 Australian children, I will have achieved what I’ve set out to do.”

After reading about the arrest of a paedophile for sexually assaulting a child, in 2008, Claude became an active volunteer for Bravehearts.

Mareeba swimming pool re-opens with a splash

Safety, security and accessibility have been improved at the Mareeba Swimming Pool, with stage two of the upgrades completed earlier this month.

Works included a total refurbishment of the existing administration and kiosk facilities, enhancing visibility and improving accessibility for emergency Cr Kevin Davies and Pool lessee services.

the second round of the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program (W4Q).

Councillor Kevin Davies said the space is more workable.

“The improvements have made a remarkable difference not just for the staff but also the patrons,” Cr Davies said.

“The upgrades were long overdue, and it has definitely been money well spent.”

Last year, the change rooms were also refurbished under round one of the W4Q Program.

Cr Davies thanked the Queensland Government for its generous contribution.

“The whole facility is more inviting and without funding from the Queensland Government, these upgrades would simply not have been possible,” Cr Davies said.

Mobile phone issues continue

Telstra is blaming poor terrain for third world mobile phone signal for a large section of the Mareeba community, despite customers complaining that the service has become worse in recent months.

On the back of a recent Express article that discovered interferance from a radio station was to blame for some massive mobile phone connectivity issues in the town, we were contacted by more people saying they were still having problems just making calls or receiving text messages from inside their homes.

Despite many of them saying the problems had been longstanding, many also complained that the service had become increasingly worse.

Giulio and Ann Del Ben have lived in their home on McBean Road for 26 years. They had no mobile phone signal at their property until they erected an antenna which improved the coverage temporarily. For the past six months, however, they are back to living with no mobile phone coverage at home.

“My neighbours and I have little to no service at times and recently have not even been able to receive phone calls,” she said.

“Currently I am only able to make phone calls from the very back of my yard and even then phone calls might drop put frequently. Sending text messages can also be very hit and miss. It is not uncommon for me to receive a number of messages at one time to notify me that I have had a number of missed calls.

“My neighbour and I have contacted Telstra about this on a number of occasions but have to date not had any success in having our service restored to how it was previously.

“Our service was not always bad in this area, but over the last number of months it has gone from bad to worse.”

But Telstra said there were no known issues in the area and blamed the problems on topography and building materials.

“We invest more in providing mobile coverage around the country than any other carrier,” a spokesperson said in a statement sent to The Express.

“We have invested $2.2 billion in our regional mobile network in the last three financial years and our mobile network reaches 99.4 per cent of the pop-

“A number of factors influence coverage, including local topography, obstructions such as trees and other structures and building materials, as well as how far you are from the nearest base station.”

But the shocking mobile phone coverage is widespread in some areas including Keaneally Road, Malone Road and in parts of the Marinelli Estate, around St Stephen’s Catholic College, Wylandra Estate and Tilse Street.

Telstra’s advice is to invest in an antenna and set up wi-fi calling.

“We are constantly investigating opportunities to further expand our coverage and we also provide a number of solutions for customers to improve their in-building coverage,” they said.

“These include Wi-Fi Calling and Telstra Mobile Smart Antenna. Telstra Blue Tick certified phones also provide superior mobile coverage performance and are recommended for use by customers who live and work in rural areas. Our local teams are more than happy to discuss the best options with our customers.”

Jaques to open liqueur distillery You’ll soon be able to enjoy some home grown coffee liqueur thanks to an innovative plan at Mareeba’s Jaques coffee plantation.

Mareeba Shire councillors voted last week to approve plans for a boutique distillery – the third for the region – that will use the coffee bean husk and pulp waste from the production of the coffee beans at the plantation to make alcohol.

‘The Lukure Collection’ will mainly produce coffee liqueur but it’s intended that in the future the distillery may also produce

other spirits including whiskey, gin and vodka.

Operations Manager Luke Andersen said they were still finalising plans.

A small area of the existing Jaques Café will be used to sell the distillery products and a small section of the existing cafe area will be utilised for tasting.

Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen applauded the developer’s innovation and initiative and said this latest development application received by Council endorses confidence that Mareeba Shire is thriving.

Mareeba Shire Council’s incentive for pet owners In a bid to reduce the number of wandering dogs in the shire, Mareeba Shire Council has introduced a financial incentive for dog owners to desex their dogs.

Council last week adopted an amended Animal Management Fees and Charges for the 2018/19 financial year, which offers a refund (on a pro-rata basis) to dog owners if they get their dog desexed during the registration period.

Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen said that council’s desexing registration fee is substantially less than council’s entire registration fee and the amended fee sched-

ule will encourage dog owners to get their dogs desexed. “It all comes back to responsible pet ownership, and we are trying to make it more affordable for pet owners to do just that,” he said.

“We know that desexed dogs are less likely to stray and are generally less likely to be aggressive.

“It is also a timely reminder to make sure your dog is registered, microchipped and is always kept in a safe and secure environment,” Cr Pedersen added.

Bike Show gearing up to be massive

Mareeba Workers Club’s annual Bike Show is on this weekend and is shaping up to be a massive day of entertainment.

On Saturday, the event will kick off for the 18th time with some of the region’s top bikes on display for viewing and judging.

Judging starts at 3pm with

presentations at 4.30pm. Classes include People’s Choice, Best British, Best Shovel, Best Evo, Best Twin Cam, Best Sportster, Best Vintage/Classic, Best Ladies, Best Paint and others.

It’s free to nominate and prizes include the Ryan Fisher Perpetual Trophy for Best Kids Motorbike, as well as the Kill Switch Perpetual Trophy for the

Best Shovel.

Three live bands – Dr Rock, Careless and Snake Oyl – will take the fun late into the night.

Other entertainment inlcudes kids corner, face painting, burn out comp and wet t-shirt competition that comes with a $300 prize.

Unveiling of ‘The Base’ at Mareeba’s FlexiChoice

People with a disability will now have easy access to fantastic facilities at FlexiChoice thanks to the generous support of local businesses and brand new renovations.

The not-for-profit community organisation provides opportunities for people with a disability to help them achieve their goals, develop skills and interests and become more independent.

Next Friday FlexiChoice located at 130 Mason Street will reveal its new venue ‘The Base’.

“We’ve wanted to renovate our building to make it more

disability accessible and more functional for what we need, as we provide services under the new NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme),” said CEO Virginia Carr.

“We now have a fully disability accessible bathroom, large indoor activity areas that are cooler and a massive outdoor area.”

The renovations would not have been possible without the generous donation by Aaron Groot from Tropic Coast Homes.

The organisation had raised the funds for the work but was overwhelmed with the ‘over

budget’ tenders received. Instead, Mr Groot donated all of his time for free and organised the project bringing it well within budget.

“We are so grateful to him,” said Virginia.

Excited staff can now fully utilise these new spaces with art, craft, social and skill development activities.

“It has huge potential,” she said.

“It’s maximised the choices of activities that people can engage in and has created an amazing fun and positive space.”

Next Friday, August 31, FlexiChoice will be combining the official unveiling of the renovations with their popular ‘Community Market Day’. From 10am to 1pm there will be food stalls and café, plants, crafts, art exhibition, as well as a mega cent sale. Qld’s legendary Balloon Bender will be providing her unique entertainment also.

Cultures combined at Multicultural Festival

This Saturday the 20th Mareeba Multicultural Festival kicks off at Arnold Park and the event that celebrates the cultural diversity of our region has come a long way since its inception in 1998.

Back then there were around half a dozen performers that took to the stage, showcasing the music and dance of their home country. Now there are over 30 and more wanting to be part of

this expanding annual event.

In a town of around 12,000 people Mareeba is home to a staggering 64 nationalities and 15 religions.

Event committee Chairman Giuliano Cordenos says the Multicultural Festival is an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate their heritage.

“It is an amazing opportunity to see all of these countries represented on one stage,” he said.

“So many people love the atmosphere and coming together.”

The day will be packed with entertainment and food from around the world from 9am through until 5pm.

Dancers will take to the stage from Spain, Tonga, Serbia, Samoa, Albania, Italy, China, Japan, the Philippines and India among others.

helps Vietnam Vets Day Community identify thief August 18 Mareeba Cenotaph Police would like to thank the Mareeba community for their assistance in identifying the offenders in relation to the shop stealing at a business on Byrnes Street on Friday afternoon.

A tip-off from a member of the public led police to arrest a 36-year-old Woree man on Monday afternoon at about 3.30pm.

It will be alleged the man distracted staff while another offender stole the Minelab detector valued at $4,200. He is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on September 17.

Anyone with information in relation to the whereabouts of the second offender are asked to contact police.

A forum that was due to be held in Mareeba next week has been cancelled. Australian Anti Ice Campaign had billed the Anti Ice community forum to raise awareness and educate the community on the dangers of the drug ICE. Australian Anti Ice campaign’s proactive approach is to educate every high

Airport closed for emergency exercise

Mareeba Aerodrome Emergency Committee will be conducting a live emergency exercise at the Mareeba Aerodrome this Thursday, August 23. This exercise will involve a live simulated incident and is necessary to meet CASA requirements.

Consequently, the Mareeba Aerodrome will be closed to all aircraft from 9am to 12pm.

A NOTAM will be issued to formally notify Aerodrome users

of the closure.

The closure of the airport during this time is necessary for airport and emergency response personnel to practice emergency response procedures in a safe and controlled environment.

Agencies collaborating with Mareeba Shire Council on this exercise include Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Services and the State Emergency Service.

Malanda dairy camp teaches about teamwork

Keen young dairy enthusiasts will converge at Malanda in early October for the highly popular All Breeds Educational Dairy Camp.

The biennial event will take place at the Malanda Showgrounds on 3, 4 and 5 October culminating with a calf day on 6 October. The camp covers an extensive list of topics, including calf care, clipping, judging, parading, photographing and promoting dairy cattle.

All Breeds Committee member and Malanda dairy farmer Greg English said the camp was aimed at engaging young people who may be interested in dairy farming.

“There are so many kids who show an interest in dairy cattle and that’s evidenced by the large turnout at our agricultural shows, both from private farms and school teams who prepare and show dairy cattle,” Greg said.

It’s a unique event in that it also brings together breeders of the four main breeds on the Tableland – Holstein, Illawarra,

Jersey and Brown Swiss – who work together to promote the industry.

Greg and wife Bronwyn, Malanda, Colin and Shelley Daley, Millaa Millaa, Henry and Anna Bevan, Ravenshoe, and Anne Daley, Millaa Millaa, make up the committee.

“The camp’s primary goal is to give the participants an opportunity to learn more about dairy cattle but it goes beyond that,” Greg said.

“It teaches them teamwork and about living together, as they camp on site for the duration.”he said.

Private William John Joyce can finally be honoured as the hero he was, thanks to the efforts of local historian Elwyn Troughton.

Through extensive research for her informative historical books, Ms Troughton stumbled across the realisation that a soldier was missing from the list of names on the Mareeba Cenotaph.

Last week that oversight was rectified by Mareeba Shire Council just in time for the weekend’s Vietnam Veterans Day celebrations.

Pt Joyce was a bridge carpenter from North Queensland when he enlisted in the Australian Army and lost his life after being killed in action in World War I. He was just 24 years old.

He has no known grave.

The first windmills have started to turn at Mt Emerald Wind Farm as a test ahead of November’s full commercial operation kick start.

First turbines start to turn

FINALLY the first few windmills have started to turn at Mt Emerald Wind Farm this week.

Ahead of the $360 million project achieving full commercial operation in November, the first turbines have started to turn as part of a staged testing and commissioning process being conducted by project developers Ratch Australia Corporation.

The test is a significant milestone as it announces Mount Emerald’s “electrification” and follows the completion of the site’s substation and switchyard which are now energised and will connect the project’s generation to the national electricity grid.

velopment, Mr Anthony Yeates said getting the first of the wind turbine blades turning was very important step for the project.

While the project uses turbines by Danish manufacturer Vestas, local suppliers such as Gregg Construction, HEH Civil and Watto’s Earthmoving have left their name on the project.

Forty-four of 53 turbines have now been raised and another six partially completed while all of the 800 tonne concrete foundations have now been poured. Less than a kilometre of high voltage underground cabling is left to be installed. The remaining construction and turbine installation activities will

be completed in parallel with turbine commissioning over the next few months, with full operation expected to commence in November this year.

The wind farm will deliver in the order of 530,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy, which is predicted to meet the annual needs of approximately 75,000 north Queensland homes over at least a 20-year period.

Power producer Ratch owns a number of wind farms around Australia including the Windy Hill wind farm near Ravenshoe not far from the Mount Emerald site, and has an interest in a number of renewable energy development opportunities.

Infrastructure priority for TRC Tablelands Regional Council’s 2018–19 budget showed a commitment to maintaining and improving the region’s facilities and infrastructure.

In addition to the $58.2m operational budget, they will be spending over $31m on capital works projects.

Roads will see $11.9m in maintenance, repairs and upgrades, including re-sheeting and bitumen reseals.

Water and wastewater infrastructure across the regions will have an injection of nearly $9m.

Some of this will be spent on developing the Water Infrastructure Development Plan, upgrading the Herberton water supply and finishing off the Ravenshoe sewerage treatment plant.

“The Community Education, Training and Disaster Coordination Centre is a very exciting project that will be completed this financial year and will greatly improve our ability to respond

and recover from disasters in the region,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “This will be further boosted by the $225,000 Tablelands Flood Warning Intelligence Project. Once implemented, the project will enhance our ability to provide flood warnings to the community and increase our flood risk management capabilities.” $2m will be spent upgrading and maintaining plant and machinery and $1m on upgrading corporate systems and eservices. $1.9m is being spent on maintaining 600 community facilities including halls, cemeteries, aged care, sporting and public amenities.

Transfer stations will benefit from a $520,000 injection of funds and libraries, tourism and cultural facilities will receive $160,000 to continue services to the community.

Big job in Atherton for Trauma Teddies

The Lions Club of Atherton has added a new project to its portfolio – Lions Trauma Teddies, or Care Bears as they are sometimes called.

These cuddly little characters may be small, but they do a big job in calming those in distress, whether that person is a child or an adult.

Purchased through Lions Clubs of Victoria’s Crimewatch Speak Up Program, the bears have been donated by the Lions Club of Atherton to Queensland Ambulance Service (paramedics), Atherton Hospital emergency and trauma wards, Carinya Home for the Aged and the Atherton Police Station, as well as several community organisations.

The Lions Club of Atherton Trauma Teddies Coordinator Glyn Ford has been overwhelmed with the positive reaction to the bears by the region’s emergency service personnel, who have found the bears to be a valuable resource in trauma situations.

Local libraries enter the digital age Libraries across Far North Queensland will share in an investment of more than $79,000 from the Palaszczuk Government to help implement digital technology programs.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the funding would help

to take robotics, coding, virtual reality and other technologies to remote communities.

“This funding is part being delivered through the State Library of Queensland’s $450,000 Public Library Strategic Priorities Grant program, and will

support exciting innovations in libraries,” Ms Lui said.

“Public libraries have always been great community resources and by making the latest technologies available to users they can now provide a new range of learning opportunities to people

of all ages.”

Tablelands Regional Council will receive $9,200 for its Tombstones to Tutorials project which will create a presentation of information gathered through research from the Atherton Pioneer Cemetery.

Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) recent announcement of $225,000 for rain gauges has had Tablelands’ tongues wagging.

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said that some of the community were wondering what the money was for and how it would be spent.

“Unfortunately we won’t be providing a rain gauge to all residents as some people were hoping,” he said.

“Instead, Tablelanders in flood-prone areas will soon have a heightened level of warning of flood events from our Tablelands’ Flood Warning Intelligence Project.”

The council received $163,000 funding from the State and Federal Governments’ Natural Disaster Resilience Program.

In 2014 the Department of Natural Resources and Mines reviewed and evaluated the State’s rainfall and river gauge network.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) then used this review to develop a two-stage implementation plan for the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.

The plan highlighted that the rainfall and river gauge network used for flood warnings varied

considerably across Queensland and between catchments.

A recommendation of the plan was that rain gauges were needed in Malanda, Bromfield Swamp, Wondecla, Wild River, Wongabel and Scrubby Creek.

“As a council, we also identified the need for visual monitoring equipment at Wild River Dam,” said Cr Paronella.

“The dam is only accessible by one road, which is subject to flooding, so it is difficult and dangerous to monitor during times of extreme rainfall.

“Usually the weather is so bad we can’t even use a drone or helicopter during these times.”

The equipment will enhance the ability to provide flood warnings to the community, and improve flood risk management capabilities. It will also contribute to the broader flood warning gauge network in Queensland.

On a local level, the gauges will improve local rainfall information for emergency services, local farmers and the general public, all via the BOM website.

This project is funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the 2018–19 Natural Disaster Resilience Program.

In 1995 I was privileged to assist the late John (Jack) Newton, NX 65676, a Rat of Tobruk, with the publication of his book ‘Six Decades of Poetry’. His original small leather bound notebook of handwritten poems, is now held in the War Memorial in Canberra. Many of Jack’s poems were written while in the trenches.

LNP candidate in Kennedy Frank Beveridge and I last week met up with many constituents in the North West during a 2500km trip listening to their issues.

After announcing funding to assist graziers in the management of their properties during the current drought while in Charters Towers, Frank Beveridge, a former mayor of Charters Towers showed me the site of the Big Rocks Weir proposal on the Burdekin River, a project that would turbo-charge agriculture and safeguard Charters Towers’ water supply.

We undertook to do everything we could to get the Federal and State Governments to act on this essential project.

At the impressive Karumba BaWe also inspected the South East Asian Livestock Services

facility which exports livestock through Karumba. The future for Karumba as a live export port looks very bright indeed because of its proximity to both the export cattle and our beef markets in South-East Asia.

One of the major issues facing Normanton in particular and other remote communities in our region is access to fibre-optic communications technology.

Frank and I have given Mayor Bawden a commitment to raise the matter at the highest level in Canberra on the region’s behalf.

This is another “must happen” project for the North West After opening the Rodeo Hall of Fame, Frank and I joined Mount Isa Rotary President Darren Campi and his hard-working rodeo committee at the Mount Isa Rodeo, the biggest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.

This rodeo has been going for 59 years and is a major tourist attraction that brings much-needed dollars to the vibrant community.

Congratulations to the Mount Isa community and particularly the Mount Isa Rotary Club that has been running the event since its inception.

Semi-finals football action came to Atherton on Saturday with the major semi-finals of the Eacham Junior Rugby League season 2018. Teams from Atherton and

Ravenshoe moved through to the U14 and U16 grand finals (to be played on 1 September). The preliminary finals will take place at Malanda on Saturday, where

Malanda will play against Herberton in U14 and Atherton will take on Malanda in U16. There will be two games in the U12 division.

The club’s ladies side shot to a shock 2-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes of play against the second placed Lions, but allowed the awayside back in the game late in the first half with the scores 2-1 to the Bulls at the break. In the second period the Lions kicked clear running away with a 4-2 win. They did have chances to increase their lead, but signs are there the lady Bulls could cause some trouble for the competition’s top two sides in the finals.

The club’s youth side have

almost sealed a finals sport with an impressive 4-0 win over the Lions. The young Bulls host the 6th placed Atherton Eagles this Saturday before going away to the 4th placed JCU Strikers, with possible wins securing the finals spot.

On Friday night in Mareeba the club’s 2nd division boys shot to a 2-0 lead in the premiership decider against the Marlin Coast Rangers, only to finish the first half at 3-3, before going down 5-3. The loss gives the Rangers the premiership, but the Bulls

will lock in second place with a win away this weekend against the Southside Comets.

The club’s 1st division boys then came away with an impressive 5-0 win over the Leichhardt Lions, and will need to continue to win to secure second spot in the finals race.

This weekend, the Bulls premier divisions are at home against the Marlin Coast Rangers, the ladies have the bye, meanwhile the 1st division and 2nd division boys travel away on Friday night.

Bulls go down 3-1 to Lions

For two weeks running a poor second half performance has cost the Bulls a chance of victory. On Saturday night they went down 3-1 against the Leichhardt Lions at Lindsay Australia Stadium.

The Bulls hit the front in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the break with Darcy Mccormack netting the only goal of the first 45.

Steven Cater was denied from the penalty spot, striking the post before putting the rebound away, but the centre referee disallowed the rebounded attempt, stating

the ball had to touch another player.

The second half started the same as the first, but with twenty minutes remaining things changed with the Lions scoring three goals in the last twenty minutes. Two goals were scored in the last 10 minutes putting them in the lead by 3-1 but not before Lions youngster Charlton Junna was sent off after he scored the Lions third goal.

The Bulls were looking to finish the season on a high with last night’s game a run of three home

games in a row.

The Bulls are now hosting the Marlin Coast Rangers this Saturday, before the Bye, then the last home game of the season against the Edge Hill Tigers on September 8.

The Bulls reserves have just about done enough to lock in second spot, fighting out a 2-2 draw with the third place Lions maintaining a two point gap with three games remaining. The Bulls were down 2-1 for long periods, but did enough to gain a later equaliser.

Hundreds attend Gymnastics champs to qualify for the State Championships being held in Brisbane in September.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell, said the event was a two-day showcase of local talent where gymnasts would demonstrate their strength, flexibility and artistry.

“Six clubs with 224 gymnasts

competing on women’s apparatus including the vault, bars, beam and floor and 26 gymnasts competing on men’s apparatus such as the vault, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bars and pommel horse,” Ms Dowdell said.

“These athletes are very competitive and have their sights set on the State Championships next month, so I’m certain we’ll see

some very polished and inspiring performances.”

Ms Dowdell encouraged anyone with an interest in gymnastics, as well as general sport enthusiasts, to attend.

“Gymnastics is a visually impressive spectator sport and these meets make for a highly entertaining day out for spectators.”

Impressive win for Roosters

The Atherton Roosters have announced their arrival for the coming Cairns District Rugby League semi-final series with an impressive 24-10 win over Innisfail at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

With a healthy crowd gathered for the annual Sponsor Partners Night, the Roosters produced some of their best attacking football in their 100th season to finish four tries to two ahead of their opposition.

Several times the Roosters enjoyed good metres out wide through clever ball skills and the speed of their young flyers.

Roosters coach Graham Clark was full of credits for his side who look to escape the match injury free.

“It was very physical from start to finish but we were very smart with our kicking game which kept turning the big Innisfail pack around,”Clark said “Young winger Kobe Martin was great in his first grade debut

and is another local face to watch in the future at our club.”

This Sunday the Roosters play their final round of the 2018 premiership competition against Storm at Edmonton.

“This will be a good chance for us to play in the coastal heat before the finals and I expect to have a full squad available as our injured players make their return.”

Saturday night’s win also gave the Roosters the annual John Cole Toyota Mayors Cup which has been returned to Tablelands Regional Council’s office after a seven year absence.

The Roosters played in another set of the popular 100 year edition jerseys which were again auctioned after the game.

Innisfail won the under 19 game 42-28 over the young Roosters and also the reserve grade 34-24. The first round of the CDRL 2018 finals will be played at Barlow Park on Sunday September 2.
