Madison awarded Target manager of the year Manager of Target Mareeba, Madison Keynes, has won one of the most prestigious awards in the country as she was announced National Retail Awards, Manager of the Year.

The winner of the award takes in all Target stores from all states and territories and comes as a huge boost with Madison taking out the award based in a rural area.

Originally from Albury in New South Wales, Madison visited Cairns and fell in love with the place. She began working with Target to pursue a career in retail management in 2009 at the Earlville store. After a short period she was promoted to assistant store manager at the Atherton Store.

“It’s so great that a store like Mareeba should win this as the community really supports this particular store, it’s the biggest of the Target stores on the tablelands and I think it’s a big thrill not just for myself but for all the staff here to be recognised for doing such a wonderful job,” said Madison.

In total, Higham Building walked away with four awards on the night – Individual Home $551,000-$650,000, Individual Home $751,000-$950,000, Best Residential Kitchen and the major one – overall House of the Year.

TRC Rates notices on their way

New car park for Biboohra school

Biboohra State School students will soon have a new car park thanks to generous funding from the State Government via Mareeba Shire Council.

Principal David King said he was thrilled the school had been selected as one of the recipients of the Works for Queensland round two funds which is given to local councils to use for worthy projects.

He said having a bitumen

car park with designated spaces would make a big difference to his students.

“We get a lot of issues in the wet season, at the moment it’s the dry, so it’s dusty,” he said.

“At that key moment at the end of school and at the beginning of school, where we’ve got cars coming in and out, parking on the other side of the road and that’s an issue. But the wet season is probably the worst time

to be able to park. You’re coming in here and this is all full of water.”

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the funding was “wonderful”.

“We would love to see it continue,” he said.

“It’s a funny thing, small communities don’t ask for much, and a thing like this means so much to them.

“It’s a big deal and as a coun-

cil you try and recognise that.

You try and do something for every community, just a little bit.”

Work will start on the new car park a week before the end of this school term.

The aim is that it will be completed over the school holidays before the start of term four.

During that period the section of Petersen Street in front of the school will be blocked off.

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will be issuing the next six months’ worth of rates on September 11. .

“You have until 11 October 2018 to take advantage of the 5% discount period,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“Transactions need to be processed and the funds cleared into the TRC account on or before this date for the discount to be applied.

You can pay your rates using BPay, EFTPOS (including debit and credit cards), cash, cheque and money order.

If you are suffering from financial burdens, please get in touch with our rates team to organise a payment schedule.

You’ll be able to pay instalments on a weekly, fortnightly

or monthly basis, as long as the full amount is paid by 31 December 2018.

Pensioners who reside on their property and hold a current eligible pension card may be entitle to receive Council and State concessions.

If you’ve got a current Queensland Pensioner Concession Card or Repatriation Health Care (Gold) Card, fill out the application form from Customer Service Centres or trc.qld.gov.au,” said Mayor Paronella.

New Waste collection day for Biboohra Mareeba Shire Council is commencing a new waste collection schedule for residents living on affected streets in Biboohra.

Kerbside waste collection will change from a Tuesday to a Friday from the week starting October 1, 2018.

There will be no collection on Tuesday October 2 and the new collection day will begin on Friday October 5. 2018.

Affected streets and roads

Tablelands author wins prestigious Americal award

A Tablelands author has won a prestigious American book award.

Written by Brenda Turner (pictured) and released in July 2015, “Bullying - What are we really scared of?” has been hailed as one of the most comprehensive books of its type. The book was 3 years in the making.

To prove this, it has recently been declared the “Best SelfHelp book for 2018” by the prestigious Pacific Book Awards based in Nevada in the United States.

Publishers Weekly, an American weekly trade news magazine, made the announcement to over 100,000 publishers, literary agents, booksellers and public and academic librarians.

As well, the groundbreaking book has been given a lifetime full-features listing on Pacific Book Review.

Every year the statistics for Bullying and Domestic Violence increase dramatically. In 2015, one woman per week was killed.

This year 3 Australians have been killed per week at someone else’s hand. In 2017, 170 women, children and men were killed as a result of violence. There are no statistics for suicide because of bullying but we’ve all heard about it in the news.

Author Brenda Turner grew up in a Domestic and Family Violence home. She not only with-

stood sibling bullying and abusive parents but survived school and workplace bullying followed by an abusive marriage.

“When the system abuses you, you know you are at the worst of what humanity can throw at you.

It was at this point in my life that I realised, if I don’t learn how to stop these terrorists in my life, it will never stop,” she said.

From her own personal experiences, Brenda learnt how easy it was for the perpetrators to get away with their abuse. She looked inside the head of a bully, learning how they perfect their mastery with manipulation. “It’s a really scary place being inside their head, there’s so much emotional confusion.”

“We are but puppets on a string to bullies. I lost a dear friend who committed suicide over a bully, who in turn moved onto their next victim. If we learn how easy it is for them to manipulate our minds, then we can put measures in place to stop them.”

Over the years Brenda furthered her study with some short courses in Psychology, Criminology, Human Rights, Justice, Sociology, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution to name a few.

With the ability to think logically and outside the square to get positive outcomes, Brenda put her knowledge to the test and has come up with a winning formula

to stop bullies in their tracks.

“Bully-free”, she put pen to paper to help others. In her book, Brenda gives a thorough explanation of bullying, delving deep into the psychological makeup of bullies and explains how to combat their “tricks of the trade”.

Brenda’s book has been highly acclaimed. Dr Jane Buschkens; B Psych (Hons), PhD, MAPS Registered Psychologist said, “I found it both informative and challenging. I was particularly interested in your inclusion of domestic violence, cyber bullying and political machinations as areas with their origins in schoolyard tactics.

It is clearly a topic of great importance and your emphasis on understanding the bully (as opposed to ‘the bullied’) is an important twist that will hopefully give these ‘victims’ more insight into the tactics being used against them.”

The book has the enormous potential to do so much good in people’s lives.

Potentially, it can save lives as well. It has already started to make a huge positive impact.

Domestic violence survivor Jennifer Clarke said that the quality of her life has improved dramatically since reading Brenda Turner’s book.

“My attitude to life and everything else is different. I no longer need to hide from the world. Brenda has a magnificent understanding of the motives behind the entire domestic violence nightmare. Getting rid of the fear is a massive life improvement. I am totally unaffected now.... and I owe it all to Brenda.”

“Bullying - What are we really scared of?” has been declared the Best Self Help Book for 2018 by the prestigious Pacific Book Awards. “I am overwhelmed and humbled by this recognition. It is nice to get confirmation of my hard work,” Ms Turner said.

QLD Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week at Rocky Creek a success

Queensland Road Safety Week kicked off last week on the Tablelands to the smells of sausages cooking and coffee percolating when Tablelands Police and members from the Department of Transport descended on Rocky Creek Memorial Park.

Travelling in Far North Queensland is a fantastic experience – the sights and people are some of the best in the country.

While we love having you

here, we also want you to get home safely.

Local local police, transport inspectors and road safety team including members from RACQ were on-site at Rocky Creek last week to share information and answer safe travelling questions, as well as feed the masses with delicious local sausages.

About 100 people took the opportunity to stop in and gather information on how to check the GVM of their caravan and

vehicle, safe towing, fatigue management, driving our local and remote roads, road rules and much more.

Everyone enjoyed the morning and gathered some valuable information on road safety – including a couple all the way from Calgary, Canada.

The hope is that the information provided to travellers will be better prepared to make sure their journey stays on-track.

PCYC keeping kids safe on our roads

Youngsters of Mareeba don’t have to worry about traffic lights in their local area, however they do need to be vigilant and pay attention when they are walking to and from school and around their community in general.

PCYC Mareeba Branch Manager, Sergeant Mary-Anne West (pictured) helped local children at the PCYC Outside School Hours Care participate in Queensland Road Safety Week last week.

After some road safety in-

struction, the students, carers and Sergeant West set about putting their road safety instruction into practice by using local pedestrian crossings correctly on a little excursion.

“Our aim was to remind our students that road safety is everyone’s responsibility and even though they are children, they too can start early and understand our basic road rules to help keep them safe,” Sergeant West said.

Some pedestrian safety facts and tips: • Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility for all road users.

• Pedestrians should stop, look and listen before crossing the road.

• Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like headphones and mobile phones.

• Use designated crossings wherever possible, as this is where drivers and riders are expecting you to cross.

• Be aware and cross with care.

By changing behaviours and increasing awareness, we can make Queensland roads safer.

Giuliano Cordenos never intended to be the chairman of the Mareeba Multicultural Festival committee. He turned up to a council meeting at the town hall back in 1998 for a “sticky beak” and walked out with the responsibility of one of the town’s and the regions, most successful events.

Twenty years later he has announced his retirement, but not before he has watched the festival grow into something really special.

“The council had a meeting to do something for Mareeba,” he said.

“I went for a sticky beak to

see what was going on. They were talking about what they were going to do and then suddenly the CEO pointed his finger at me.”

Giuliano had experience of running the town’s Australia Day event and was considered an ideal fit for a festival that would encompass the region’s different cultures.

He was given a budget of just $1000 and that year the first festival was held with just half a dozen performers.

August 25 this year marked the 20th year for the event with over 30 performers and more wanting to take part. It also

marked the end of an era for Giuliano, 79.

He has helped guide the event into something everyone wants to be a part of and it’s no accident that every year it is held on scientifically the driest weekend of the year.

“Before that first event, I went through the weather for Mareeba for the last 50 years,” laughed Giuliano.

“And that was the only weekend in all that time where there wasn’t any rain!”

Giuliano would like to personally thank the Queensland Multicultural Affairs for their continued financial support over

the years. The Mareeba Shire Council and Staff for their continued support. A huge thank you also to his committee members and members of the public.

“A successful annual event could not be possible to achieve without your continued effort, commitment and support.

“I am truly grateful to you all.

I will miss you and I will never forget my journey and experience of the past 20 years.” said Giuliano.

Giuliano will still be a big part of the festival, but is looking forward to coming back next year as a spectator to enjoy the performers and the food.

NAPLAN – Yungaburra State School top of the tables

There might be a state-wide outcry about Queensland’s poor NAPLAN results, but thankfully some of our Tableland schools are bucking the trend.

Yungabura State School has just 226 students and not for the first time came out on top in the national testing.

Of the 36 Year 3 students that sat the NAPLAN test this year, 100 per cent of them are at or above the National Minimum Standard in all five sections.

The Year 5’s did almost as well, scoring 100 per cent on spelling, GP and numeracy and 96 per cent in reading and writing.

“We have traditionally been doing quite well at NAPLAN,” said principle Brigitte Mackenzie.

“I think we’ve got a very consistent approach across the

school, we’ve been teaching directly from the Australian curriculum for four years now.”

Although across Queensland, school kids have not improved at NAPLAN, Tablelands parents are seeking out those schools with the best results, even if it means travelling from outside the area.

“We’re still out performing the nation in most areas and the interesting thing for us is that the demographic here has changed for us,” said Mrs Mackenzie.

“Not all the kids are from Yungaburra, they are travelling from across the area.

“I make a point of meeting with every new family when they come to enrol and there are a large percentage of families that go looking for schools that are performing well.”

Mrs Mackenzie said the school uses ‘blended teaching’ anf focus a lot on development in the early years.

Safer more sensible Mary Street in Malanda Collaboration between Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and the Malanda community to address safety concerns and parking inefficiencies on Mary Street have come to fruition.

“We have started initial work already, but the bulk of the work will start in September, and we hope to have everything completed before the wet season is upon us,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We’ll do the work in stages to minimise disruption and ensure safe access to the school and residences.

Fifty percent of the $750,000 project costs are from a Department of Transport and Main Roads Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) grant.

Without this state government support, this project, on this scale, may never have happened,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

Division 3 Councillor Anthony Ball is excited about the project.

“This is a big investment in Malanda, on one of the busiest streets in town.

And once completed, there

will be more car parks available to the primary school, markets and showgrounds, including long-vehicle and disabled parking.

The separation of pedestrians from the road will also be increased, and the footpath will now link to the Bike Bus network.

The project recognises the success of the annual show and monthly markets, and the massive growth of the primary school.

More families are moving into the area and we need to cater for their growing needs,” said Councillor Ball.

The old and potentially dangerous camphor laurel trees along Mary Street, that are showing evidence of reaching the end of their life, will be replaced by species more suited to the conditions and location.

Detours and road closures will be in place during the work and the community will need to heed all signs and instructions from TRC staff.

The project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and Tablelands Regional Council.

Program creates better drivers Mareeba High School students will be better drivers thanks to a program run by Rotary in conjunction with Queensland Road Safety Week (August 27-31).

Year 11 students from Mareeba State High School watched first hand what speed can do on the road.

“The idea of the day is to give these year 11 kids a better understanding of driving, in terms of perceiving hazards, the effects of having a new vehicle with ABS breaks and in terms of stopping distances to avoid collisions,” said Mareeba Road Policing Unit Officer in Charge Sgt John Ridgway.

As part of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness course, three students got to take a ride in the car with Sgt Ridgway while he tested out his stopping ability at different speeds.

The students also saw first

hand what speeding does when faced with the prospect of a child walking across the road. Foam squares were used to simulate a crash at high speed.

“Any education that you can give young drivers is going to be of benefit at least to open up their eyes,” said Sgt Ridgway.

“We were all young once and young drivers all tend to be a little bit the same and have the feeling or the thought that it won’t happen to them.”

As part of the program the students also heard personal stories from people that have had serious driving injuries and how that has affected them and their family.

“It gets them thinking about the repercussions of not thinking or not paying attention or not paying as much care as they should,” Sgt Ridgway said.

Students learn about the dangers of Ice ICE – Don’t try it, not even once.

This was the message for Mareeba State High School students at the “Putting the Freeze on Ice” information day.

The school combined with the Australian Anti Ice Campaign and was brought to Mareeba thanks to the generous funding from Mareeba Toyota and Hansen Ford.

“They talked about how it im-

pacted their life and their family, how it affected them personally and all the ongoing health conditions,” said Mareeba State High School deputy principal Lesa Pershouse.

“For the kids to hear that from someone living it, it just really had an impact.

“They talked a lot about about knowing – they said if I knew what I knew now I wouldn’t

have tried it.

“Part of the progam is about making good choices and that you can’t risk trying ice once because of the nature of that drug,” said Mrs Pershouse.

“They talked about the science of why Ice is so addictive and the ultimate message is don’t do drugs, but the nature of the way it was delivered was so powerful.

“Do not to try it, even once, because it is so addictive and so detrimental.

Mrs Pershouse said a number of students sought support after the talks to help deal with loved ones struggling with drug addiction.

“Overall the program has had a really successful introduction to our school and next year we’ll look at doing it again,” she said.

“It was a very positive experience for students and staff and it’s about lets support our kids to make good choices.”

A community Ice action group has been formed for Mareeba involving local emergency services, Queensland Health, the school and the prison among others.

On October 10 a forum will be held at the Mareeba Interna-

tional Club for those in the community that want more info and help.

“The purpose of the forum is to bring together community organisations and support services that can help respond to what’s happening with ice because it is in our community it is impacting our community,” said Mrs Pershouse.

Lakeland Wind Farm could be stalled by faulty paperwork The proposed Lakeland windfarm was given Federal Government approval last week but construction plans by Canberra company Windlab to start earthworks before the end of the year might be dashed by what a neighbour claims is ‘dodgy paperwork’ it submitted to the State Government.

The $200 million development provides for 30 wind towers up to 240 metres high to be erected on private property near Lakeland.

The previous federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg approved the project with strict conditions after a request by neighbour Joy Marriot for the Minister to insist on an environmental impact study.

A plan of a an approved house site on Ms Marriot’s property and the site of the towers on an adjoining farm, submitted by developer Windlab under the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) code, was based on misleading data.

In a letter to Minister Frydenberg delivered in February, Ms Marriot wrote: “I am greatly concerned this project was classed as code assessable and no environmental impact study was required by the State Government in the planning process.

“In January this year I completed the construction of a ten-

berth council-approved caravan park which is situated approximately 1.3 klm from the proposed nearest tower.

“Furthermore I have a council-approved house site situated only 800 metres from the nearest tower. Like the caravan park, this site was approved prior to the State approval being given for the windfarm.”

According to the wind farm site plan given to Ms Marriott the nearest towers will be just 800 metres from her intended new home.

Part 2.1 of the SARA development assessment process states a development application for a wind farm will be subjected to code assessment ‘if one or more wind turbines ….are less than 1500 metres from a sensitive land use on a non-host lot and the owner of the non-host lot has by deed, agreed to the turbines being less than 1500 metres from the sensitive land use.’

A dwelling house is defined as a sensitive land use. The code’s noise criteria apply to all existing or approved sensitive land uses for which sensitive receptors may be identified.

Ms Marriott said a map submitted in the Windlab application showed her approved dwelling site in the wrong location.

“The property boundary is not on the right alignment and Windlab should have contacted

Report outlines possible future development of Mitchell River The Mitchell River to the west of Mareeba has proven suitable for a large-scale dam water storage where several dam sites have been identified.

The North Australian Water Resources Assessment of sustainable farming options on the Mitchell and other rivers in Western Australia and the Northern Territory has revealed sites along the permanent river which could sustain large dams for irrigation.

The assessment has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture and carried out by CSIRO. The Federal Government released the report last Thursday with input from indigenous groups and pastoralists along the entire length of the river.

CSIRO project leader Dr Chris Chilcott said lack of finescale, region-wide data had been one of the constraints to investment in northern Australia in the past.

“This is the data northern Australia’s never had, it’s what investors and decision makers need to understand the real potential of northern Australia and de-risk commitment to large-scale infrastructure development as well as providing opportunities for smaller scale investors,” Dr Chilcott said.

“This work delivers the information needed to determine the scale of opportunity for agriculture and water resource development across these catchments as well as what communities need to feel confident in future development decisions.

“It has taken enormous collaborative effort among sci-

entists from a wide range of disciplines and with research partners in Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland to produce this data and deliver it in a way that will be useful to government, investors, communities, Traditional Owners and industry.

“We’ve also refined and developed new scientific methods to assess such large areas accurately and more quickly. For example, we used Digital Soil Mapping and Landscape Suitability Mapping in new ways to generate detailed crop suitability maps for 126 different options for up to 44 crops.”

It was not a development proposal or green light to go ahead with the project but an assessment for the Federal Government to make a decision “sometime in the future,” said CSIRO research scientist Marcus Barber.

The manager of Kowanyama Rangers, Mr John Clarke pointed out his community was the last user of water along the river before it discharged into the sea and any upstream storage should not affect the river flow.

“We hunt and fish on the river, it is our life and we do not want it destroyed,” Mr Clarke said.

Mr Barber said the assessment took in environmental and cultural impacts covering indigenous values, rights and interests.

He encouraged indigenous groups to look at potential, new farming and business options.

jects from banks or government and how a lack of financial support would hinder their business opportunities in the farming, livestock or aquaculture industries.

Mr Barber said the report was completed, submitted but as yet not released by government and all relevant studies including the location of dam sites would be made public, hopefully before the end of the year.

“How development occurs will be up to investors, governments and communities – but even if irrigation opportunities were fully developed, they would occupy less than 3 per cent of the Assessment area,” Dr Chilcott said.

“It’s a challenge in a project of this scale and complexity that we produce an enormous amount of data and reports. To make it easier for people to understand and use that data we’ve developed NAWRAexplorer, a public data interrogation app that enables anyone to investigate data in time and place.

“That will help inform those future development decisions.”

The CSIRO will be back in the region in the next three months to report to the major stakeholders in the form of meetings and forums .

This year two teams represented us, it was a tough year with very young teams, but our players gained valuable skills and experience.

Our men entered a team in the B men’s Cairns comp this year. In their first year they made the final rounds; so, a great effort. All this obviously can’t happen without our coaches, managers, parents and generous sponsors.

You are the ones who have made this possible. So, thank you.

A major highlight this year was being able to secure recently retired captain of the Australia Men’s Hockey team the Kookaburras Mark Knowles as the Patron of our club. Mark attended the club in June and held coaching clinics for our members and coaches. What a fabulous day that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. We even made the local WIN News. Mark has agreed to continue as our Patron which is amazing news for our little club. Coming from a small club himself

ATHA was again very well represented again in 2018 Peninsula teams with 11 players chosen in teams or as shadows competing in various tournaments around the state. U19 schoolgirl Laura Trezise was chosen as goalie in the Under 19 Qld team who will represent the state in a tour of NZ later in the year. An outstanding achievement. Laura is currently fundraising for her trip so keep an eye out and support her if you can.

ATHA once again sent teams to various State Championships this year with our Masters (35+) Ladies heading to Townsville with two teams in June.

Leanne Godfrey was named the Hockey Qld player of the final. Team 2 (with 10/15 newbie’s) thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Our U18 ladies competed in the championships in Cairns in July and our U13 boys headed down to Mackay in July. The Boys

had a great tournament and ended up 3rd in Division 2.

Thanks again to all coaches, managers and parents who assisted.

Targa tour success Dodge Viper pair Jason and John White completed a dominant outright victory at the maiden Targa Great Barrier Reef tarmac rally in Tropical North Queensland.

Leading from the outset, the Whites blitzed the 16-stage, 200 kilometre event run on the challenging roads on the Atherton Tablelands outside of Cairns. The Tasmanian nephew and uncle duo finished winners by 53 seconds.

The battle for the podium placings saw Paul Stokell and Malcolm Read eventually prevail in their Lotus Exige after they traded places several times with Lotus rivals Jeff Morton and Cameron Reeves who were a further six seconds back.

The final outright podium also

reflects the top three finishing order It’s Live in Queensland GT2 class.

The absorbing tussle saw Stokell walk a fine line between pushing to the limit and playing the percentages game with the four-round CAMS Australian Targa Championship weighing heavily on his mind.

Stokell is now in the box seat to claim the title, which will be decided in Victoria in November, after leaping to the lead on 206 points, 36 clear of White.

The Whites scarcely put a wheel wrong, dropping time only threes during the three-day event which drew a huge number of spectators on the stages and fans at night time activities in the Cairns CBD.

“This was a really good event to challenge ourselves as it was a real level playing field with noone having a home advantage,” White said.

“Events like Targa Tasmania we’ve done over 20 times, so you get a bit for familiar with the roads, whereas no one was familiar the roads up here, so it was a very good equaliser and very close competition as well.

“We didn’t win any stages by a large amount – it was just one second here and two seconds there, so it was a really good close battle.”

Stokell could find no answer to reeling in the more powerful Viper on some of the tighter stages which would ordinarily see the agile little Lotus gain an

advantage.

“We had a good battle with Jason (White), but we were really up against it in the horsepower stakes,” Stokell said.

“We’ve taken over the outright Championship lead so we’ve had a good weekend.”

Queensland business tycoon Tony Quinn and co-driver Kate Catford finished the last stage in fourth outright and first in the Dutton Garage Early Modern class, but a mechanical problem on the transport back to Cairns saw him penalised five minutes and forfeit his spoils. Class honours went instead to Liam and Larry Howrath in a 1995 Nissan Skyline GTR. Victory in the Shannons Classic GT saw Michael and Daniel

“We’re really stoked and the whole event was an awesome experience for us,” Michael Bray said.

The Shannons Classic Handicap saw Ashley Yelds and Charlie Hughes hold on to victory in a hotly contested class in their 1961 Volvo 122S. “We really thought we didn’t have a chance in this event, so we’re a little bit overwhelmed by it, to be honest,” said Yelds. “It was a challenging event and a lot of the stages were very technical.”

Reef Hotel & Casino GT Sports Trophy was taken out by Mark and Scott Meletopoulo took their Lotus Exige S to a 38 second victory.

After some tight competition throughout the event, Thoroughbred Trophy ended with an easy victory to Tim and Kym Hall in their 1980 Holden Commodore.

TSD Trophy winners were Darryl and Peter Marshall in the 2002 Ford Falcon Pursuit Ute 250.

Competition will return for the final round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship at Mt Buller in the Victorian High Country from November 9-11.

No future for Cairns FC Cairns FC will not be competing in the NPL next season – Below is a joint statement released by both Football Queensland and North Queensland United released last week.

Football Queensland (FQ) has received official notification from North Queensland United confirming the club’s withdrawal from National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland.

Following consultation and collaboration with FQ throughout the course of the season, North Queensland United will relinquish their NPL Queensland licence, effective immediately.

“We’d like to acknowledge everyone who has supported the club and players this season.

We’re not ruling out an opportunity to re-enter NPL in the future,” North Queensland United General Manager Declan Carnes said.

The key outcome of this consultation process was to ensure investment in youth development is delivered in North Queensland through sustainable pathways.

FQ will present a proposed regional development model to NQ clubs and North Queensland Football at scheduled consultation meetings, starting Tuesday, 28 August.

This includes plans to appoint

a new regional development team of 10, consisting of regional development officers, skill acquisition program officers and an advanced coaching director to focus on achieving consistency in youth development across Queensland.

“While disappointed to relinquish our licence, we believe the proposed model from FQ will deliver long-term sustainability and more opportunities for local talent and regional football as a whole,” Carnes said.

FQ Chief Executive Officer Richard Griffiths said the state governing body is committed to providing opportunities for players across the state.

“We applaud the efforts made

by North Queensland United and the significant work of all parties, however the challenges of running a regional NPL club remain real,” Griffiths said.

“The proposed new model will see investment in a qualified team and the delivery of sustainable programs and competitions in regional Queensland.”

The relinquishment of North Queensland United’s NPL Queensland licence will not impact promotion from the Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) to the NPL Queensland in 2019.

Young lady Bulls make history

Watch out ladies football – the Mareeba Bulls are coming.

The Bulls U13/14 all girls junior side made history last week after being crowned premiership winners of the FNQ Football U13/14 all girls competition for the first time.

It was also the first time a MUFC junior all girls team has

won silverware and was the only premiership the club celebrated in 2018.

The young ladies played 21 games throughout the season and did it fashion, going through undefeated. To cap it off they also won last weekends major semi and have moved directly into next weekend’s grand final.

The young side is made up of 13 and 14 year old girls from not only Mareeba, but also Malanda and are coached by Sandro Soncin, Vince Iacutone and Mark Simonato.

This weekend, is the preliminary FNQ Football finals, and the young ladies will have the weekend off, but MUFC

have four other grades all playing this Saturday for a chance to proceed to the grand final. The U15/16 division 1 and division 2, along with the with U13/14 division 1 and division 2 – if all grades are successful, the club could have five junior teams playing in the FNQ Football grand finals.

Grand final time has arrived two weeks early for the Atherton Roosters after they were defeated 28-16 by Mossman in Sunday’s major Cairns District Rugby League semi-final at Barlow Park.

Mossman stunned the Roosters early with two quick tries to lead 12-0 after only six minutes of play. But to their credit, the Roosters fought back through

tries to Reece Munster and James Clark to level the scores at 12 all.

A second try to James Clark put the Roosters in front 16-12 at the 30th minute. With one minute remaining, Mossman produced a brilliant passage of play resulting in a try and a 1816 lead for halftime.

The Roosters had their chances soon after the restart but

were denied twice after finding some good metres in attack. Errors from the Roosters allowed Mossman to stay on the attack and they soon had control of the contest. Mossman’s fourth try at the 60th minute pushed them further ahead 24-16. Another try followed soon after giving Mossman a 12 point lead. Mossman now move through to face Brothers in Sunday’s qualifying

final while the Roosters play a do-or-die semi with Tully.

The Atherton Roosters under 19 side are also booked for a do-or-die final this Sunday after going down 36-28 to Brothers in the major semi. Game times for the Atherton Roosters knockout finals this Sunday at Barlow Park are 10am under 19 verse Kangaroos and 4pm first grade verse Tully.

Gators reserves impressive win The Mareeba Gladiators Reserves had an impressive win against Southern Suburbs on Sunday to secure a qualifying final playoff with Yarrabah Seahawks this Sunday at 2.30pm for the right to play in the grand final.

After a slow start by the Gators which saw Suburbs score the first try of the match and lead 6-0, the Gators turned on the style and dominated they rest of the match scoring seven

tries and winning by an impressive 44 -12.

Try scorers were Paul Alofi, Arnold Bates, Joseph Sio, Darren Ball, Seone Patolo, Elasaia Tokarahi and Shihan Aue, while Darren Ball also kicked six goals.

Coming together as a unit at the right time of the season is paramount for a successful final run and the hard work and effort the boys put in at training has paid off.

Bulls ladies and youth lock in semis The Mareeba Bulls premier ladies will play finals football for the first time in over a decade after a 1-1 draw on Saturday against the JCU Strikers was enough to lock in fourth spot.

While there are still two games remaining of the regular season, the premier ladies will again take on the Strikers in the elimination semi final in two weeks time. The Bulls youth grade also locked in a finals berth with a 2-0 win over the Strikers.

On Saturday at JCU, the youth boys took a 1-0 just before halftime and then extended the lead midway through the second half and despite dominating the match, could not extend the lead, but the three points was just what the doctor ordered, as the young Bulls also have midweek catch up game this Wednesday against the second placed Southside Comets.

In the ladies match, Jeannae Kalinau gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead midway through the

first half, but the Bulls paid the price for not putting away more chances and the young Strikers side made them pay, scoring a equalizer midway through the second half to draw the match 1-1.

On Friday night in Mareeba, the Bulls and the Atherton Eagles played out a derby thriller, with the Bulls coming away with a seesawing 4-3 win. After the Eagles lead at 1-0 ad then 2-1, the Bulls hit back to lead 3-2 and then 4-3 to take all three

points.

The Bulls 1st division boys enjoyed a highscoring 5-3 win over the Stratford Dolphins and both sides now have locked in second place come finals, but the 1st division boys could still have a premiership chance if results to go their way.

This weekend all grades are back at home, with the 1st division and 2nd division boys at home on Friday night, while the Edge Hill Tigers come to Mareeba on Saturday in all grades.
