Preliminary investigations suggest at 3.45pm, a vehicle carrying five Japanese Nationals rolled on Herbert River Road near the Kennedy Highway. Water skier Matt Cutuli demonstrates the extent of the weed issue at Tinaroo Dam.

Relief as weeds to be sprayed at Tinaroo By Rebecca Wallis

Recreational water users at Tinaroo are thrilled that SunWater in conjunction with Tablelands Regional Council will today take steps to eradicate a noxious weed that is rapidly clogging up the lake. Aerial herbicide spraying by helicopter will take place at Tinaroo today, June 6, and SunWater is advising lake users to stay away for 48 hours. Member of the Barron River Water Skiers Club and Tinaroo resident Peter

Delai said the move is welcomed. “We noticed the weeds back in November - water cabbage and hyacinth,” he said. “They clog the water ways up and they grow very quickly and has stopped us from using certain areas of the lake.” Mr Delai has been working with SunWater and Tablelands Regional Council to help find a way to eradicate the pest. “I’ve said to the council and all the land owners, this is coming from up above in people’s dams and people need to be aware if

they’ve got noxious weeds before it gets into our waterways,” he said. “Since the floods have come it grows at a rapid rate of knots.” Spraying today will occur on the western side of Lake Tinaroo up to Tobacco Hill. Lake access for water sports users will be maintained via the northern end of Lake Tinaroo during this period. The lake will be safe to access for all users from Friday 8 June 2018. SunWater staff will patrol Lake Tinaroo on the day of the spray to monitor

the area and advise users to stay away. Boat operators and householders in the vicinity of the waterfront are advised to keep clear during the operation and avoid contact with sprayed water weeds. Contact with water in the sprayed area should be avoided for a period of 10 days. Using the water for livestock watering or garden irrigation purposes should also be avoided during this period. The spray will benefit residents by controlling the water hyacinth outbreak, enabling Lake Tinaroo to

continue be enjoyed for recreational purposes. Water Hyacinth is a floating water weed introduced from South America. It is a major pest of creeks, rivers and dams - choking wetlands and waterways, killing native wildlife and interfering with recreational use. The spray will enable SunWater to manage the spread of the weed before it goes to seed, which can cause much wider infestation. Lavender Hill and Tinaburra boat ramps will remain closed for the duration of works.

Have your say on Mareeba traffic changes

Mareeba residents are being asked to give their feedback about proposed traffic changes in the town’s CBD. In February Mareeba Shire Council endorsed a Traffic Management Study which was a joint initiative between Mareeba Shire Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to investigate ways to improve road safety. Mayor Tom Gilmore said council is now seeking

community feedback on the planned traffic changes to the three council sites. “The study is only the beginning of the overall strategy to improve road safety for all road users in Mareeba’s CBD,” he said. “We want to reassure residents that these proposed changes have been carefully considered after a comprehensive review of the traffic movements across the town over an extended period of time.”

Affected residents and business owners have been notified of the proposed changes at the Rankin Street/Walsh Street intersection, Walsh Street traffic flow and accesses to Coles and Target customer car parks and the Herberton and Constance Streets intersection. “The three sites in question at present are no secret to be dangerous, particularly during peak times in the morning and of late af-

ternoon,” Cr Gilmore said. “We need to better increase traffic flow and capacity as Mareeba’s population continues to grow and the demand increases.” The proposed changes are subject to funding availability and Council will continue to seek alternate ways to improve road safety. Community feedback is open until June 22. The traffic study and forms are available to download from council’s website.

Business owners, entrepreneurs and wannabe success stories made the most of Queensland Small Business Week which ran from May 28 to June 2. Tablelands Regional Council hosted a number of events throughout the week including lunch with Shark Tank’s Steve Baxter and the FNQ Business Conference hosted by Andrew Griffiths. He also explained that the world of business is starting to change in the sense that people want to know who they are doing business with now. “The stories help you to stand out from the crowd,”

A lot more businesses do that now.” Mr Griffiths proved his point by divulging the details of his horrific childhood that involved neglect, abuse and drugs. “That changes how you see me and my business now,” he said. “No matter what you say I know it does.” Katrina Houghton followed Andrew on stage to explain how it works. Tablelands Regional Council’s Small Business Week culminated in a star studded gala held at the Atherton International Club on Saturday night. Hundreds of nominees attended the event, hoping to find out they’d been picked as the winner of one of five awards that offered $1000 prize money. smaller affair,” he said. “It grew last year and this time with five different categories it grew again. We’re putting a lot of effort into small business week and it’s actually coming back ten fold from the businesses and the community.” Cr Paronella said it was important to celebrate our local businesses. “If it isn’t us that are trying to bring people into our region who are giving seminars, giving talks, what other organisation is going to do it?” He said. “Small business week is an event right throughout the whole of Queensland so

we saw it as an opportunity and this is the result from there. The amount of people we’ve had come along to all of the events this week as been absolutely incredible.” WINNERS OF THE AWARDS: Regional Innovator: Mungalli Creek Dairy. An Atherton hair salon that has only been open for five months took out the People’s Award for Employer of Choice. Mum and son co-owners of BLK Hair Studio Braden and Kim Stewart were shocked to find out they had won the award which is voted for by the people. “It’s not all about the money, it’s about making your hairdressers the best hairdressers they can be,” said Braden.

Fantastic visit to the Tablelands I’ve just returned home to the UK from a wonderful month spent on the Atherton Tablelands with my daughter and two grandchildren who moved there last year. It was my first time visiting the region and – wow – what an experience. I’m a retired teacher, luckily getting over a dose of ‘terminal’ cancer and I guess you could say from that experience I see things with a renewed perspective. The people, the places and the scenery are all second to none, notably Jaques Coffee Centre where I had the best cup of coffee ever and on the same day, did the weekly Mareeba market with an interesting museum and eatery, once again serving superb beverages and an amazingly tasty lunch. Not to be missed was what I would describe as a frontier town that reminded me of a beautiful English village – Yungaburra. I had one of the best breakfast’s I’ve ever had at the Whistle Stop Café! Without going through every visit, I have to say a word about the local people. In London the people are busy, rushed and usually stressed. Having time to chat and socialise is not high on their agenda. The Atherton Tablelands seems to be just the opposite, with people taking time to share anecdotes, local information and niceties like cricket – Oh yes and swimming at the Commonwealth Games, all in light hearted Australia banter. A last word is for Frank, the major doma at the Tai Kwon Do club when my grandson Toby is a young member – Frank was typical of the local people. Funny, down to earth and dedicated to the club; what a great guy. You couldn’t ask for better. Lastly, the infrastructure and roads mean driv-

ing without getting into a row with other drivers and parking near to where you actually want to go! All these things, maybe to locals small things, presented me with a warm climate, great scenery and chatty people, with welcoming and sanguine personalities. So, thanks to all the Mareeba and Atherton locals that made me so welcome. I can’t wait to come again. As yer average Cockney might say – ‘good gaff son’. Philip Peppiatt Essex, UK

Does Council need a review? There has been a spate of controversial voting decisions made by Council recently. A factor in this is that Mareeba Shire Council meetings do not allow proper consideration of material by Councillors or the public. The obvious problems are these: MSC holds a once monthly Council meeting. Previously, until February 2017, Council held twice monthly Council meetings. The agenda for the Council is available to Councillors on the Friday before a 9am meeting on Wednesday. This restricts Councillors to Sat, Sun and Mon to review the large volume of reports and information. Tuesday is a busy preparation day for the Wednesday meeting. Councillors are afforded one working day to do further research on report material or to contact staff or members of the public for further discussion. The

sheer volume of material, squeezed into a tight time frame, allows for little proper consideration of any recommendations other than those provided by Council’s own officer. The agenda for Council’s meeting is available to the public in the afternoon of the Monday before a 9am Wednesday meeting. There is simply no reasonable time frame afforded to the public to review material and contact councillors before decisions are made on their behalf. The lack of a divisional system of voting within the MSC further removes representation of affected publics in the decision process. If council could address these points then controversial development applications could be assessed in a more inclusive way. Steven Nowakowski President Kur-Alert Inc.

Have Millaa Millaa pot holes been forgotten? The pot holes at Sluice Creek Road were fixed at long last, however Millaa Millaa at the southern end of the Tableland has been forgotten. On the corner of Palm Avenue and Maple Street there are bad potholes six to eight weeks old. Has the Tableland Regional Council forgotten their duty of care to rate payers or are these pot holes left there to council satisfaction? Robert Ferrari Millaa Millaa

Atherton Show calls on banana farmers By Rebecca Wallis

The Atherton Show is only a month away and among the horses, cattle, flowers, cakes and art work will yet again be a display of the region’s best bananas. A recent addition to the show’s schedule, the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society started the competition in 2015 after being approached by industry

representatives. “It is an opportunity to showcase banana growing in our region,” said promotions and sponsorship coordinator Bree Hargreaves. But lack of support from sponsors and entrants means this might be the last year the class will feature at the show. “We would like to see a bumper year of entries and encourage all farmers to take the time to bring in an

entry,” said Bree. “We have changed the drop off time/day and judging to Friday July 6 to ensure that it is convenient for them.” Last year’s overall winner was Borsato Farming in Tolga. So who will take out this years most successful exhibition on aggregate points and most outstanding exhibit? The competition is on.

Atherton Show will be held on July 9-10. Tickers are now on sale and competition schedules are available at the show office and at various outlets around town. Tickets are available at Atherton Show Office, Tableland Hardware, Giddy’s, Summers News and 4AV Ravenshoe. Entry forms for competitions are being accepted at the show office now.

Justices of the Peace celebrate 100 years Local members of the Queensland Justices Association came together last Tuesday to celebrate 100 years of the organisation. Directors of the Association Keith Revell and Bronwyn Mcentee flew up to Mareeba for the event and highlighted how relevant Justices of the Peace are in the community. “For JPs it’s an essential part of the fabric of the justic system,” said Mrs Mcentee. “To be able to give free access to every member of the community for the essential administrative paperwork that they give to industry and government

and the checks and balances that a JP provides to the judicial process for search warrants, arrest warrants and all those sorts of judicial aspects, it’s an essential entry point into the judicial system.” Queensland Justices Association was formed on September 17, 1918. “We’re having some special celebrations around all of the branches this year,” said Mr Revell. “Today we’re handing out centennial pins as a memento in recognition of 100 years for every current QJA member, all 6,500 of them. We’re travelling around as much as we can visiting the

local branches.” Mrs Mcentee said JPs are more relevant now than ever. “There’s been an increase in the services we provide over the years,” she said. “More and more people are needing our services for statutory declarations, for example with carers leave they need to come in and get a stat dec to say that they took a day off work to care for their child, instead of having to go to a doctor to get a medical certificate. “People need certified copies of all their academic records, previous job history. The need is increasing.”

The Cooktown Discovery Festival kicks off on June 15.

Cooktown’s biggest event soon to begin The countdown is on to Cooktown’s favourite festival, and Cape York’s longest-running annual event, the Cooktown Discovery Festival. The three day festival kicks off on Friday, June 15, with a packed day of events aimed to please all ages and budgets. Friday’s program includes helicopter tours, botanical drawing workshops, river cruises, live entertainment, marine gunfire and the Festival’s official opening, the Discovery Festival Ball. Tickets for the ball, which will be catered by the award-winning team from Cairns’ Ochre Restaurant, are on sale now on the Discovery Festival website. Cruise into Saturday with community markets, the grand parade, scavenger hunting, the poet’s breakfast, cultural tours and workshops, pie and pasta eating competitions, live music, the Indigenous Warrma, fireworks, gold delivery and much, much more. “It’s a cliché, but there really is something for everyone at our festival,”

Cook Shire Council Tourism Manager Sally Eales said. “There are so many free events and lots of family fun, as well as live entertainment at pubs and clubs, fireworks, novelty events and art and culture activities. The problem will be finding enough time to see and take part in everything!” The fun continues on Sunday, with the not-to-bemissed re-enactment of the first reconciliation between the local Guugu Yimithirr people and James Cook and his crew at the site of the historic meeting in 1770 on the banks of the Endeavour River. “It’s a very special event, with descendants of those original men and women who met Cook taking part in the event on the same spot they have stood for thousands of years,” Ms Eales said. The (sometimes literally) smash-hit billy kart races are also back, with all sorts of outlandish wheeled creations ready to race for glory, as well as a cemetery tour, family fun run, sunset cruises and street markets.

Patricia Goldfinch, Sharon McCaley and Robert Larkin from Mareeba Community Housing are ready to start assisting those looking for work through the Intensive Placement Support Program.

A helping hand with finding work By Rebecca Wallis

A new program has just launched in Mareeba that is aiming to help the longterm unemployed get back on their feet and into the workforce. Mareeba Community Housing received a government grant to run a program called Intensive Placement Support (IPS). The aim is to give jobseekers that have been out of the workforce for long periods, the opportunity to be personally assisted through the sometimes challenging task of finding a job and navigating the first few months or years of a new role. The program aims to help some of the down on their luck clients that pass through the Mareeba Community Housing office, as

well as others who have been unemployed for a long time but show a genuine desire to want to work. “That process of transitioning into work can be quite stressful, daunting, overwhelming for some people,” said supervisor for the program Robert Larkin from Mareeba Community Housing. “After a few weeks it’s very easy to get the negatives happening inside the mind, the narrative goes round and round and all of a sudden it’s easy to go back to where you were and be on an allowance than to have go through this overwhelming stress of going into the workforce. So we’re trying to make that transition a little bit easier.” Through Intensive Planning Support Officer Sharon McCaley, prospective employees will be assisted

in looking for work, applying for work, finding work and then given intensive support whilst they’re at work. Employers are also given the same level of help during the transition. “It’s about changing everyone’s perspective,” said Sharon. “It’s changing the job seekers and getting them out of this generational centrelink payment cycle and saying let’s get you out of this and make you a role model so that the generations below say well mum and dad have worked, I want to go and do what they’ve done, not stay at home. “It’s also about changing local employers perceptions because some of them have had really bad experiences. But I’m on site and I’m there to sort out any issues immediately.

“We’re trying to stay on top of everything as it crops up. So I’m there to benefit the person that’s employed, but I’m also there to benefit the employer so that they’re not wasting their time continually having to speak to the new employee to show them things. I can take that role on. Sort of like a mentor.” The program can support around 15 people a year and the criteria is strict. Applicants must be long term unemployed and show a genuine desire to want to work and includes indigenous job seekers. Community Housing’s IPS program will work in conjunction with the local job active providers in looking for suitable candidates for the program, but anyone can apply by calling the office on 4092 7042.

A message to Queensland’s farming community The vegetation management laws in Queensland have changed. Here are the facts about the new laws. CS 8345 05/18

Fact 1: You can continue to harvest fodder trees, like mulga, to feed stock.

Fact 4: Queensland’s agricultural industry will continue to grow.

By following the accepted development code for fodder, you may still push mulga to feed stock. All you need to do is notify the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy of your intended activity. There is no cost to notify.

More than 32 million hectares of land in Queensland is Category X and therefore unaffected by the new laws. About one million hectares of this land is currently used for grazing but has the potential to be used for cropping; about 300 000 hectares of this is in North Queensland.

Fact 2: You can still manage thickened vegetation. You can still thin vegetation where you can demonstrate that thickening has occurred. The only change is that you will now have to get a development approval. The Queensland Government is streamlining the application process to reduce impost on landholders.

Fact 3: The new laws that protect additional native vegetation near waterways do not stop you from managing your land or running your business. Landholders in the Burdekin, Mackay–Whitsundays and Wet Tropics Reef catchments have worked with this law since 2009—successfully. The new laws extend the same level of protection to the Burnett–Mary, Eastern Cape York Peninsula and Fitzroy catchments.

Fact 5: Areas of regulated vegetation are not ‘locked up’. A range of routine management activities can still occur in regulated vegetation including weed control, selective harvesting of timber, fodder harvesting to feed stock, and construction of property infrastructure via self-assessment, free of charge.

Fact 6: Existing Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAVs) are not changed by the new laws. The new laws do not change the management of more than 23 million hectares of Category X that was locked in under PMAVs approved or applied for before 8 March 2018.

For advice on managing vegetation on your property call 135VEG (13 58 34). PAGE 10 The Express, Wednesday, June 6, 2018

Members of Kuranda Pony Club with Jim Gaynor, a national horse archery competitor.

Kuranda Pony clubbers learn horse archery Jim Gaynor gave a horse archery clinic at Kuranda Pony Club on May 20. “It was great fun,” said instructor Suzanne Cove. “The clinic consisted of learning how to handle and shoot the bow then how to condition the horse for the sport. Then they has to put it all together for the horse archery clinic.” All protective equipment was provided and a various range of bows were on offer to suit everyone. “All levels of riders can do the sport from lead rein to nervous novice riders, to advanced,” said Suzanne. “Everyone progressed amazingly well, growing in confidence while having fun. Jim’s way of teaching is clear and easy to understand with encouraging and constructive comments making the whole experience great fun.” Due to the success of this clinic, the club has organised another one for July with a tournament afterwards for people to compete in.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Ben Thompson, Bayer National Key Account Manager, Matt Tripet, CEO, The Fly Program.

A dismal day in Innisfail for Bulls The Bulls made the two hour trek south to the Innisfail Cutters home ground on Sunday and came home empty handed, with only the club’s reserves the small shining light in what was a dismal day. It was always going to be hard for the Bulls premier team with up to seven regulars out including striker Steven Cater and defender Ben Stabile, coupled with regular centre back Nicholas Tallarico

also out with a serious knee injury. The re-shuffled Bulls outfit travelled south though still hopeful of bringing some points home. It was not meant to be as the Bulls confided three goals in 20 minutes to be down 3-0, although they did fight back to 3-2 at halftime. Late in the second half conceded four goals in the last 20 minutes to lose 7-2.

The Bulls reserves came away with the only points of the day winning 4-1, the ladies lost 2-1 and youth lost 5-1. On Friday night the Bulls’ 2nd division boys succumbed to their first loss of the season with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Marlin Coast rangers, while the Bulls 1st division boys came away with a 2-1 away to the JCU Strikers at James Cook.

A controversial decision by the refs on Saturday night is what Gladiators coach Matt Wakefield says cost them the game against Southern Suburbs. The Mareeba boys played away and went almost the whole 70 minutes with just 12 players. “He got sent off for an indiscretion but the call was a bit controversial,” said Wakefield.

“It was a bit harsh, I don’t think he should have been sent off but it will go to the judiciary now so we’ll see what happens.” The loss of the fall back meant Suburbs were left with the opportunity to score two tries down the right hand side of the field. “We led at half time but we just ran out of puff,” said the coach who returned to the field on the

weekend after injury left him sidelined. This weekend the Gators will take on Ivanhoes at home. If all players make it to training twice a week, Wakefield is confident they’ll be in with a chance of winning. “I don’t know any side that that win when they’re training just once a week,” he said. “It’s a bit of a problem here.”

Fishing challenge to Controversial send support mens health off for Gladiators

Take one of the nation’s favourite hobbies, throw in hundreds of enthusiastic fishos, add some invaluable support for rural men’s health and you have all the ingredients for Bayer’s Big Fish Challenge 2018. Local teams are taking up the challenge, with Landmark Mareeba’s FNQ Piscatorial Professionals, Tableland Fertilizer’s Mangrove Hacks and Tolga’s

GT Ag Services (aka GT Fishos) all vying for local honours, as well as the overall prize. While the Big Fish Challenge is nominally a friendly fishing competition for Bayer agents and clients nationwide – with 30 prizes on offer – partnering with ‘The Fly Program’, means that it will also help tackle another big issue: the mental wellbeing

of men in agriculture. The Bayer AgSpirit Big Fish Challenge is donating a dollar amount for every centimetre of the largest fish caught (per type, per team) and has committed a minimum of $20,000 to the ‘The Fly Program’ charity. The charity, a not-forprofit organisation, aims to create life changing experiences for Australian men who need some time to

recharge and reset through outdoor experiences. The winning teams will all have an opportunity to take part in a hands-on ‘Fly Program’ experience. Ben Thompson, National Key Account Manager at Bayer commented: “We wanted to show our support and it just seemed too distant to write a charity cheque for such an important issue.”

Roosters down Innisfail 26-24

Roosters number six Jermaine Pedro.

A try to winger Jesse Carleton at the 78th minute has given the Atherton Roosters a 26-24 win over Innisfail at Callendar Park on Saturday night. The Roosters were behind 24-22 before the ball has spun wide to put Carleton over in the corner for the match winner. Innisfail had started the night with first points at the 10th minute and an early lead of 6-0. A try scoring double to centre Nigel Woodleigh and one to winger Matt Baillie set up a 16-6 led for the Roosters at halftime. Innisfail came out firing for the second half with tries at the 43rd, 46th and 52nd minutes and now led the contest 24-16. But to their credit, the Roosters stayed focused and were back in the game when Caleb Foster crashed through the defence to score with 6 minutes remain-

ing and close the gap to 24-22. From the restart, the Roosters were soon back at Innisfail’s end of the park to deliver their match winning points. Coach Graham Clark was full a praise for his young Roosters who continue to turn up with the right attitude. “We were behind and showed plenty of character in our response to save the match.” Clark said. ‘’There isn’t a lot for size in our side but we have plenty of speed and everyone is doing their job.” The Cairns District Rugby League first grade points table after 8 rounds is Brothers 13, Atherton 12, Kangaroos 10, Mossman 8, Tully 8, Innisfail 8, Yarrabah 7, Ivanhoes 6, Suburbs 6, Mareeba 2, Edmonton 0. This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host Edmonton Storm at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

A-league soccer stars coming to Mareeba Mareeba United football Club is gearing up for huge school holiday event with former Socceroos and A-league stars Jade North and Archie Thompson coming to Mareeba for a one day only football development clinic, on July 4. The two former stars are headlining the one day clinic which will allow kids from 6 to 16 to be able to get up close and personal with two legends of the game. They will learn skills from two former Socceroos – Archie’s goals scoring feats in the A-league and Jade North’s experience as one of the best defenders in the business. MUFC President Remo Terranova is excited about Jade and Archie coming to Mareeba and the flow on effect it will have on the club for a long time to come. “It’s huge, there really is no other way to describe it, for two legends of the game to come to our club will have long lasting effects not only on the field, but off it,” Terranova said. “For the kids to have a small insight of how, why and what it takes to become a professional footballer will help them go along in understanding the level of commitment and attitude it

Archie Thompson and Jade North will be in Mareeba next month.

takes to play at the highest the level. “The club is absolutely over the moon to host the event and cannot be more thankful to Archie and Jade for coming all this way. “A special thanks to former A-league player Wayne Srhoj for paving the way for his colleagues to make the trip to Mareeba.” The three hour clinic

will run from 9am to 12pm. The pair will relish this opportunity to give back to the sport that has given them so much and being able to pass on their knowledge and skill to kids from all ages and all walks of life. Archie and Jade know Mareeba quite well as the town is known for producing some fine young talent like Wayne Srhoj and Nico-

las Panetta who both went on to captain their country at U23 and U17 age brackets respectively. Srhoj’s silver medal at the U17 world cup in 1999 is still the only competition medal ever won by Australia at any male football competition. He even scored a penalty in the Grand Final against Brazil, while Panetta most recently got on

the score card against world heavy weights Brazil in the last U17 World Cup. Across FNQ, players such as Zenon Caravella and Michael Thwiate have also made pathways to the highest level of pro football. Registrations open Tuesday June 5. Jump on the club’s Facebook page to register or get in contact with MUFC.
