Spreading the good will of Christmas throughout the region, Royals Church is ramping up its food bank services in the lead up to the festive season.

Over the past 10 years the church has given out around 1200 food parcels to those in need and the demand is growing.

“People get referred to us all the time,” said pastor Jeff Xhafer.

“Five organisations in town and all the other churches refer people to us. So we need help from the people of Mareeba because otherwise we’re not going to be able to keep this up.

“Every year it’s increasing and by the grace of god we haven’t turned one person away yet.”

Food bank co-ordinator Chantle Moss said those that need help include people that are struggling financially, people that have lost their job or mothers that might be escaping a domestic violence situation.

“Every situation is uniquely different, but it’s always a high need of some sort,” she said.

“Our Christmas appeal is called Making Spirits Brighter because what should be a joyous time for many people is not so joyous for some.”

Royals Church gives out food parcels all year round, but at Christmas they are given a festive twist including some goodies and treats that families usually like to enjoy at this time of year.

The general public are being asked to donate any non-perishable food items

to the church’s food bank.

These include tinned fruit, tea and coffee, milo and sugar, crackers and potato chips, pancake mix and maple syrup, cordial and

soft drink, longlife custards and jelly crystals, Christmas pudding and candy canes, lollies, rice, cereals and longlife milk.

CT scanner promised for hospital Mareeba Hospital will receive a new $1.5 million CT scanner under a re-elected Palaszczuk Government.

Labor Candidate for Cook Cynthia Lui said as a result of the commitment Mareeba residents would no longer have to travel to Atherton or Cairns for CT scans.

“A CT service in Ma-

reeba will mean that a diagnosis will be available sooner, and patients will be able to access that service at Mareeba Hospital, rather than being transferred to Cairns,” Ms Lui said.

“This is another great example of how the Palaszczuk Labor Government is supporting the residents of Mareeba – on top of record funding and staff-

ing for Mareeba Hospital.”

Ms Lui said every year around 500 patients at Mareeba Hospital were referred to Cairns or Atherton for CT scans.

“Having a CT scanner on site will mean huge savings in terms of time and travel for patients, and for the nursing staff and medical officers who accompany them to offsite ser-

vices,” she said.

“The reduction in the number of transfers to Cairns will also reduce pressure on the Queensland Ambulance Service, who facilitate the transfers.”

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said the new CT scanner was expected to be up and running within six months.

“Since we were elected, the Palaszczuk Government has increased funding to Mareeba Hospital by 14 per cent to $24 million in the 2016–17 financial year and we have increased staff from 216 to 227,” Mr Dick said. “Mareeba residents can be assured that the Palaszczuk Government has no plans to close or downgrade State health

services at Mareeba Hospital, now or in the future and there are no plans to downgrade the Emergency Department.”

He said in addition to last month’s announcement of a $1.5million staff accommodation project, today’s promise was further evidence of the Government’s commitment to the future of Mareeba Hospital.

Mum says fight for the hospital must continue

As rumours abound that patients are frequently being shunted from Mareeba Hospital to Atherton due to a shortage of beds and services, one mum has spoken publicly about how much she desperately needs the hospital to remain open and fully-functioning.

Sonia Chapman’s five year old son Liam suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome. In his first year alone he was admitted to hospital 13 times and frequently suffers from respiratory distress.

“I don’t have a problem with the hospital, we’ve never had anything but great treatment however should it not be there, that would be a big issue for me,” said Mrs Chapman.

“The complicated thing with Liam is that he doesn’t appear to be sick – he doesn’t feel pain so we

don’t know he’s sick until he’s very very sick and that’s usually just because he’s a little whingey.

“So the fact that the hospital is there and they know him, it’s half the battle for us because if we see someone that doesn’t know him, they look at him and say yes he looks good. Even with the last lot of pneumonia we had to get a chest x-ray to confirm because no one could really tell for sure.”

Mrs Chapman was referred to a private x-ray specialist by her GP for Liam a few weeks ago who did not understand how hard his condition makes positioning for the process. Instead she went to Mareeba Hospital of her own accord for the same x-ray where staff went above and beyond their job.

“They’re always really good there, but they were extra good that day,” said Mrs Chapman.

“They let him play with

the machine and let me hold his hand. So we wouldn’t have had his x-ray to see that he had pneumonia which required hospitalisation if the hospital wasn’t there.”

Sonia has to take Liam to the hospital for out of hours treatment every month on average.

“We’ve had to wait like other people because there’s emergencies out the back or whatever, but I cannot fault our level of treatment,” she said.

“And that’s not just for him that’s for any member of our family that’s had to go there, it’s just that he goes all the time.

“My big concern with the whole thing is, if I can’t do that then it’s an issue.

Since dial-a-doctor has come in we have used that.

But they can’t do an x-ray or a blood test and I don’t have time to go to another hospital. As it is I work part time

to get him to all of the appointments. His dad left his job and started his own business so that we could have more care time available.”

Mrs Chapman is not concerned that the hospital will close in the immediate future, but that if the services are slashed, her family will suffer.

“I’m not worried the hospital will close but if services drop off, that impacts me,” she said.

“If they close the x-ray etc – it’s all that peripheral stuff that will go first. If he is in hospital in Atherton someone has to stay with him and I have another child to run around for. If he’s in Mareeba and asleep, I can run home and get him fresh clothes because I’m two minutes away.

“I cannot praise the people there anymore highly, but don’t think what they’re doing is valued enough by government.”

Health in Mareeba still an emotive issue for locals

In an open letter last week Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore stated publicly that he would not be involved in the debate over the future of Mareeba Hospital.

Addressing the ‘Mareeba Community’ on Friday, Cr Gilmore responded to the invitation to speak publicly on the issue at the Mareeba International Club on Tuesday night (November 14).

“Due to the upcoming election, this is an ideal time to offer the Mareeba community an opportunity for such a discussion and I trust that both the Minister for Health and the Shadow Minister for Health will be available on the evening to answer questions and will

be given ample opportunity to outline their policy positions,” he wrote.

“The management of the Queensland Health system resides solely with the Queensland Government and is not a local government matter. Therefore, as we are currently involved in a state election campaign and to avoid confusion about responsibility, my attendance is unwarranted.”

Cr Gilmore went on to say that the council has no role to play in the conduct and operation of the hospital and that he had met with the Minister and Shadow Minister for Health on two occasions to pass on the expectations of the community.

“We have hosted a meeting of the regional board in the council boardroom and we have had numerous

contacts and meetings with senior officers of Queensland Health,” he wrote.

“There is no doubt that as a result of those meetings that decision makers at the highest level in Queensland Health are fully apprised of concerns expressed and the full expectations of the community in respect of the Mareeba Hospital.”

Organiser of the meeting Denis McKinley from the Mareeba Hospital Concerned Citizens Group said he was “seriously disappointed” in Cr Gilmore’s decision not to attend.

“I believe Tom Gilmore needs to stand up and be counted,” he said.

“He needs to lead the community. As a voter and as a citizen I would want my civic leader fighting for the community.

“It’s not just about

roads, rates and rubbish.”

The situation at the hospital remains unclear with multiple members of the community reporting they have been relocated to Atherton or Cairns and told that it was due to a resource or staff shortage.

None so far have wished to comment publicly on their experience and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) has denied these reports are indicative of a larger issue or plan to downgrade the facility.

“Demand has increased recently due to the flu and tourist season, as well as higher acuity of patients, leading to longer stays,” said Gabrielle Honeywood, Executive Director, Rural and Remote Services, CHHHS. “This can be expected in

the normal peaks and flows of an acute hospital.

“Mareeba Hospital continues to provide excellent care for the Mareeba community and local people can be proud of their hospital.

“Residents can be assured that there are no plans to downgrade services now or in the future.”

Ms Honeywood said there were 53 operational beds with a current average occupancy of 70 per cent.

“When demand for beds exceeds that which can be provided under normal conditions, CHHHS deploys additional clinical resources and streamlines models of care by following Capacity Escalation Plan. This way of managing beds and staff is similar to that employed by every hospital in Queensland.”

Range of TRC projects on track for completion Tablelands Regional Council is on track to complete on time and on budget a raft of projects for which it received funding under the Queensland Government’s 2016-2017 Works for Queensland program.

A total of $3.68m Works for Queensland funding for the Tablelands region, enabling TRC to undertake job-creating maintenance and infrastructure projects across the community.

“We’re very proud of the huge amount of work that has been done,,” Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“The State Government requirements were that the projects must create jobs, must not be included in the Council budget and must be completed by 30 November 2017.

“Council staff worked incredibly hard to secure funding for these projects, and they have also gone above and beyond to ensure that we are on course to achieve the end of November completion deadline,” the Mayor said.

Council’s list of projects includes upgrades of parks, street scapes, pathways and

walking tracks, road improvements, public amenity upgrades, sewerage and waste upgrades.

The list of projects was developed with input from all areas of Council, with Councillors having also put forward suggestions for projects in their local areas.

Projects completed or scheduled for completion by the end of November, and the funding received under Works for Queensland, include:

Years ago this farm was a cane farm and also had cattle grazing. The photo was taken by a Canon Powershot G12 camera and the settings were: F-Stop – f/4, Exposure – 1/50sec, ISO – 160.

Judy used an App on her IPAD to make the photo look Vintage (Grunge) and then darkened the edges of the photo to draw attention to the old shed (vignetting).

Domestic violence awareness

FIFTY-TWO life-sized White Ribbon silhouettes will be installed in Mareeba and Atherton next week in a bid to raise awareness of females who have lost their lives in domestic violence relationships.

One woman a week in Australia will die at the hands of a violent partner – a statistic Mareeba woman Val MacIntosh knows all about.

Her daughter Corinne died five years ago after struggling through a domestic violence relationship. She has been campaigning to raise awareness of these issues ever since.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” she said. “There has been a slight shift in attitudes and I think people are

starting to realise it’s not on now.”

The statues are being brought to the Tablelands in a joint initiative by Tablelands Sexual Assault Service and Queensland Police Service. They were erected at the 100 Park in Mareeba on Tuesday, and in Atherton at the RSL Park today (Wednesday, November 15).

Tablelands Domestic and Family Violence Coordinator Andrew Osborne jumped at the chance to bring the statues to the area.

“Getting people talking about this is the only way we’re going to stop it happening,” he said.

“We need to have a whole community approach to this and challenge the status quo. We need to seek ways to ad-

dress this and challenge the perception that it is acceptable.

“Our aim is to stop it before it gets to the end result, which is a homicide.”

Mrs MacIntosh said she will be fighting to raise awareness of domestic violence until the day she dies.

“That’s all I can do, is just keep fighting to raise money and awareness,” she said. “If I can help just one person from going through what Corinne did, then it is worth it.

“If Corinne were here, I think she’d be happy with that.”

The 52 statues represent one woman a week every year that dies in a domestic violence situation.

The general public are invited to visit the display throughout the day and attend the candlelit vigils.

Tips for speaking out

Sometimes it is hard to know what to say when someone makes an inappropriate statement about women or behaves inappropriately. Try one of the following tactics: • If you are with friends and someone says something that makes you uncomfortable, you can say: “I’m not sure what you mean. What did you say?” Sometimes people forget they are talking about a real person.

• To remind them and

change the conversation, you can say: “What if this was your sister/ daughter/son?”

• Give your opinion to show your disapproval: “I believe abusing a woman is wrong.”

• If you are with a group of people, you’re probably not the only one feeling uncomfortable. Let others know they are not alone and encourage them to speak up by asking: “Am I the only one uncomfortable with this?”

Keep left signs to be installed Working in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Mareeba Shire Council, TRC will be installing signs across the region to help remind tourists to keep to the left when driving to improve safety of all road users.

“We welcome and attract thousands of overseas visitors each year to our region and this is one way in

There used to be a loud buzz in every gum tree as it flowered around my house but now the silence is much too obvious and this silence has come far too quick... it is frightening.

The whole of this year I have only seen one honey bee and now I see fewer and fewer native bees, in fact we now have to hand pollinate our pumpkins to get fruit.

What is happening, two years ago the place was literally buzzing with them all kinds of bees large and small... tiny black bees, blue banded bees, teddy bear bees, carpenter bees and more.

Ok to some extent insecticides sprayed on crops kill bees but they have always recovered quite quickly but this time whatever is killing them has really done a job and it may become very serious in-

Tully Millstream scheme sits idle It is amusing to see Dalrymple/Hill KAP member, Shane Knuth, trying to claim ownership of the Tully-Millstream hydroelectric scheme.

This was proposed in the 1980’s by the National Party with all feasibility studies passing scrutiny and ready to go.

Previous Labor party member, Warren Pitt, was totally supportive of the scheme and in 1991 he suggested it should be in place by 1998.

As the Greens had put their usual objections forward mentioning the Franklin in Tasmania, Warren Pitt clarified that there was no comparison between the two.

What happened?

Since Labor won government thirty years ago in 1987, Queensland has been under their rule for 23 of those years.

Labor has been less than generous to the north during all those years.

Their promises are hollow and our current member has not had any influence on this major infrastructure.

With the enormous

costs to us all with the current Mt. Emerald wind development on the Tableland, we could have had this clean power supply operating for twenty years but yet nothing has happened when tunnels are already in place at Tully Millstream.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent on it only to be left sit by the ruling government over all those years.

It is definitely time for a big change.

Cape York being overtaken by trees Cape York Peninsula, the land that my family and friends love is disappearing under an ocean of trees.

Gone are the open river frontages with their scattered trees where you could see for miles.

Gone are the open plains, the black soil flats through the sand ridges, the gulf plains.

Timber thickening through loss of ground cover, increases run off in the wet and causes an artificial drought in the dry because trees soak up so much water, drying up springs, soaks, wet flats etc.

In 30 to 50 years large areas of the Peninsula will be un-musterable.

Scattered trees enhance grass and legume growth, producing good ground cover, thus slowing runoff.

Once the tree canopies meet, grass protection reduces. The good deep rooting grasses are replaced by shallow rooted grasses producing little ground cover.

The thicker the canopy the less grass. The thicker the timber the more run off.

The more ground cover the less run off.

Since 1970 timber thickening on Pinnacle has increased by four to six times and in some spots by as much as 10 times.

If properties were allowed to selectively clear timber within an area so that the density of the timber on the property is reduced, in order that the grass growth will increase.

Chillagoe water restrictions Chillagoe residents are being urged to reduce their water usage as the town’s water capacity is at a critical level.

Council has imposed Level 3 water restrictions for residents connected to the town’s water supply in Chillagoe, effective as of November 1, 2017.

Although the Chillagoe Township is fed from three bores, the water supply is reaching a critically low level.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said unfortunately one of the bores failed last week due to a lack of water and another pump is currently being assessed and will undergo emergency repairs should it be deemed neces-

sary.

“The town cannot survive with one bore which is already struggling to produce its maximum yield,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Without intervention, there is a very real chance that bore three may run dry and Council cannot take this risk.”

Council has moved swiftly to monitor and assess the town’s water capacity, deciding to introduce immediate Level 3 water restrictions as a precautionary measure. These restrictions will remain in place until further notice.

“For Council officers to adequately address the issue of a restricted water supply from the under-

ground aquifer in Chillagoe, Level 3 Water Restrictions will be imposed in the township of Chillagoe to ensure continuity of water supply to the residents of Chillagoe,” Cr Gilmore said.

Under Level 3 water restrictions: • Watering of private gardens by manual or automated sprinklers, micro spray or drop watering systems is prohibited on Mondays.

• Odd numbered houses may only use sprinklers on Tuesdays and Saturdays • Even numbered houses may only use sprinklers on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 6am to 7am and 6pm to 7pm.

I note that a public meeting will be held this week, as a forum where members of the community might express their views in respect of the future of the Mareeba Hospital and the conduct of the provision of health services to the Mareeba community in general.

Due to the upcoming election, this is an ideal time to offer the Mareeba community an opportunity for such a discussion and I trust that both the Minister for Health and the Shadow Minister for Health will be available on the evening to answer questions and will be given ample opportunity to outline their policy positions.

As interested observers and representatives of our community, your Council has met with both the Minister (on two occasions) and the Shadow Minister and both have been left in no doubt whatsoever about the expectations of our community. We have hosted a meeting of the regional Board in the Council boardroom and we have had numerous contacts and meetings with senior officers of Queensland Health. There is no doubt that as a result of those meetings that decision makers at the highest level in Queensland Health are fully apprised of concerns expressed and the full expectations of the community in respect of the Mareeba Hospital.

The management of the Queensland Health system resides As a Council we look forward to clear policy statements from solely with the Queensland Government and is not a local all sides of politics so that the community continues to have government matter. Therefore, as we are currently involved confidence in the delivery of health services. in a state election campaign and to avoid confusion about responsibility, my attendance is unwarranted.

Power costs on the agenda

Electricity prices have increased for some by around 110 per cent in the last eight years prompting key industry leaders to band together and ask local election candidates what they are going to do about it.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, Canegrowers, and the Queensland Farmers’ Federation along with the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association have invited all candidates from the seats of Cook and Hill to a forum next Wednesday, November 22 to hear their views on the subject.

“We want this to provide the general public and local businesses and growers with information about where these candidates stand on the subject,” said Bronwyn Dwyer, manager of Tableland Canegrowers.

“This is an opportunity for them to find out what their positions are and then decide how they’re going to vote.”

Ms Dwyer said that for the cane industry, power prices are now ranked as the second biggest cost behind harvesting and in front of fertiliser.

“For agri-businesses, most of our guys can’t pass the costs on to their products like other businesses can,” she said. “They are price takers.”

Ms Dwyer said that sev-

These include: write down the regulated asset base by 50 per cent; remove hidden taxes; design and implement efficient tariffs; fund the solar bonus scheme from government revenue; and discipline generator’s bidding practices.

“It’s time for all political parties to put the Queensland economy first and rein in the excesses of the state’s electricity natural monopolies,” she said.

“We want to call on all candidates in the lead up to the next State Election to make genuine policy commitments to industry to ensure immediate electricity price relief.”

The forum will be held on Wednesday, November 22 at the Mareeba Leagues Club 11am to 1pm.

Guest speakers from Queensland Farmers Federation, Canegrowers and Mareeba Chamber of Commerce will provide information on how the electricity price is currently determined, the impact of electricity pricing on households, businesses and the rural industries as well as outlining the steps Government should be taking to reduce electricity prices.

Mayor urges locals to get behind appeal Each year, the Mareeba Shire Council’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that the vulnerable and isolated people in the Mareeba Shire are able to experience the joy of Christmas.

Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging residents to get behind the appeal, saying there were many people within the Mareeba Shire who needed assistance this festive season.

“In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal, which exemplifies what Christmas is all about,” Cr Gil-

“Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community.”

“There is too much pandering to vested and political interests and our community has woken up to the fact.

“Just looking at the proposed Kur-World development for the Myola Valley, that is in total conflict with the lifestyle expectations of the community, it appears to be a repeat of the ‘Aquis’ debacle all over again.

Don’t water it down

“We don’t care where it comes from as long as we have it,” said KAP candidate for Cook Gordon Rasmussen on the general sentiment of a meeting in Mareeba last Monday night to discuss one of the biggest issues on the election agenda – water.

Mr Rasmussen spoke to around 100 people at the Mareeba RSL alongside member for Dalrymple (and candidate for Hill) Shane Knuth and member for Kennedy Bob Katter on a range of problems and solutions to address the current water security and supply needs, including building the Nullinga dam, Tinaroo fill-up and flood harvesting the North Johnston.

“We’re losing around $560,000 a year from the district in revenue because of this issue,” Mr Rasmussen told The Express from Cooktown on Friday.

“When they start talking about a dam worth $260m, it pales into insignificance.”

Like other local authorities on the matter, Mr Rasmussen spoke of a three point plan that would see the shortfall of water to the Mareeba/Dimbulah irrigation region improved.

“The first one is the better utilise the water already

there,” he said. “We’ve got leakage through the existing channels and they need to be upgraded.

“The second is the North Johnston Diversion to top up Tinaroo. That’s quite a quick, short term fix while Nullinga is being built – that’s the cheapest option. But we are not there to rob water off the existing users – they’ve got their own resource operations plan. It’s about utilising the excess.”

Mareeba farmer Makse Srhoj spoke at the meeting, reflecting what others in his position are thinking.

“I don’t know why every government is arguing about water,” he said.

“It’s the only thing that keeps this country alive, without it we all die, no crops, no farms we have nothing.

“Let’s build all the water assents we can, the more the better and we can talk about how much it costs and who needs it later.

“The important thing is to build them now so we are not in this situation ever again”.

Penny Johnson is my name and I am a fierce advocate for people, prosperity through innovation, and plain hard work.

I have been on the land all my life, with the best slice of it here in the electorate of Cook. This is the place I belong.

I know and love the land, the people, and the weather, most of the time! Been through the droughts, fires and floods. Shared the good stuff and the bad.

I have been a jillaroo, kept a zoo, managed tourism enterprises and roadhouses. We’ve won awards running tourism businesses and created many local jobs throughout the community.

We’ve also run a great business 4WD up the Cape, an airline agency and an accommodation-booking business with Bart - my life and business partner. I haven’t been busy at all!

In case you haven’t picked it up - I care about the people of Cook! I’ve put that care to seriously good practical use as Deputy Mayor of Cook Shire, and Chair of the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

I love getting involved in events, as a volunteer, and have coordinated the award-winning Cooktown Bull

Primary production depends on affordable and sustainable water. And the complex and biodiverse environments of Cook depend on having enough water at the right times to keep them going. We are so lucky to live up here, but to sustain the place we love, we have to get the balance right between our water demands and those environmental flows, particularly from Tinaroo.

We can’t expect sustainability if we ignore what is going on around us. Thinking through to the grandkids - what is our water legacy, what do we hand on to them?

And increasing demand and our changing climate is only going to make balancing water use more challenging.

So water is everybody’s business, because we all benefit, or lose if we screw it up. I am committed to fighting for a balance between prosperity now, and prosperity in the future (that is what water security means). It’s quite simple really - if we don’t have a sensible and sciencebased approach to how we manage our water now, we won’t have a future that we would want our grandchildren to live in. I am committed to that fight.

What am I doing within the LNP already? As you may have read, in the last couple of days - we have committed $10M (which the Federal government will match) to do a proper study on Nullinga, on whether the dam should go ahead. Sounds expensive, but that is what it costs - it is a big question. And the payoff - the real contribution to water security, could be huge. For generations! So $10M now - hundreds of millions in increased production and prosperity, well into the future, and that’s what I am about.

What is involved? You know, yourself, that before you go ahead and do something, particularly if it is big and chunky, you have to look at it from all angles - your money is hard-earned, it hurts to throw it away. So, we need to get the environmental impact and sustainability all sorted. This the LNP way too – full and considered investigation inclusive of all stakeholders to make sure things don’t go pear-shaped, at a huge public and environmental cost.

We are doing the same with the North Johnstone Diversion. Last week, Mario Quagliata (LNP Candidate for Hill) and I pledged a cool $1M to properly and responsibly investigate all the ins and outs of the potential water delivery system for the Diversion. We will take your views directly into the investigation and planning phase, to properly and responsibly investigate the potential for the water delivery system.

We will also tell you everything about the good AND bad aspects of these two projects so you can decide how you want them to play out.

Water is our future, its security is our responsibility.

Cape York Regional Plan Review Let’s Do This!

The Cape York Regional Plan is a living document and belongs to You, the People of Cook.

Many of you have told me that you want a review of the Plan, with concerns expressed about the amount of real community-level consultation during the regional planning process.

I am a long-time Cape York resident, and a rural-area advocate. I has always actively encouraged Cook residents to have a say in their region’s development. I have been affected by the very same issues, and have the same cultural, social and environmental needs as you, and will fight to make sure your voice is actually heard.

Priorities have changed since the Regional Plan was put together. We have moved from a great tourism-environment focus to also having the desire to balance agricultural development, culture and environmental needs.

Ways of collecting and analysing planning data have also improved, meaning we now have the opportunity to build a better and more inclusive plan to do the things we really want to do.

And we want all the people of Cape York to have a real say in how the Plan develops from here. All the people - from the Straits south; the CYRP also enormously impacts employment and economic growth in Port Douglas, Mossman and Mareeba.

I will work with every sector of the community to ensure thorough consultation, particularly focussed on community meetings, not committee meetings.

Getting heard won’t be a bun-fight. All of you will be invited on-board the annual review process to make sure the Plan is culturally, socially and environmentally appropriate. And that the data gathered are based on solid science, and deliver solid results.

Mareeba Hospital - Great Days Ahead!

You have told me that hospital services are high on your list of priorities.

We will fight for a major development to greatly enhance Mareeba Hospital, through public-private partnerships.

To that end I am seeking $500.000 for a feasibility study into developing a new concept in health services, based out of Mareeba, and affecting the whole of Cape York.

The vision is for an environmentally-responsible multipurpose space, part hospital facility, part disaster-shelter, part events hub.

Imagine a large square, with an amphitheatre-style open space in the middle, under a high roof, with fully equipped specialist health-provider consultation rooms on the outside. Built using local materials and local tradies, this will be a show-case for Cook industry and innovation, and medical services.

Built to cyclone standard, with solar panels, rainwater collection, and the best in sustainable building technology.

Elevating Mareeba Hospital to national significance, the facility would create jobs and attract further investment into the Hospital and the Community. It would attract the highest quality medical specialists and encourage

BRYNN MATHEWS – GREENS

Supporting treaties between Govt and indigenous people Brynn Mathews has been a resident of Far North Queensland since 1995 and has a 15 year working history in Cook electorate, 10 years with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and 5 years with the Mitchell River Watershed Management Group.

Now retired Brynn has continued his interest in social and environmental issues. Brynn sees the key issues in Cook electorate as closing the gap with indigenous communities, getting wind and solar based power supplies for the off-grid communities and achieving a balanced, sustainable agricultural in-

dustry on Cape York.

Brynn stated “I saw Malcolm Turnbull’s offhand rejection of the Uluru Statement from the Heart as both disrespectful and shameful. The Greens support treaties between the Australian government and Australia’s First Peoples as being essential to progressing true equality, resolving land tenure issues on Cape York and creating opportunities for indigenous community to prosper”.

In the immediate future the Greens support an expanded indigenous ranger program in Cook electorate that would support better land management and weed and feral animal

control and create local employment.

Whilst the focus of attention on renewable power supplies has so far been on the grid supplied parts of Australia, almost all of Cook electorate is off-grid and dependent on regular diesel deliveries by truck or barge to secure their power supply. The Greens support the establishment of community-based, clean energy generation and storage systems. Such systems would remove the dependency of remote Cape York and Torres Strait communities on diesel shipments.

The rapid transition to zero-carbon power systems is critical.

BARRON RIVER

ANDREW HODGETTS – IND

Let’s end corporate donations to political parties I am Andrew Hodgetts and I’m running as an Independent for Barron River. I am a husband and father of young children. I worked as a paramedic in ambulance services across Australia. I then moved into teaching, working as a lecturer in Paramedic Science.

I decided to run for the seat of Barron River because I feel that my family, and families like mine, are no longer being represented by politicians and political parties. The major parties have become prone to undue influence from corporate donations and appeasing these donors.

Also, the MP’s of these major parties must toe the party line, often at the expense of their electorates.

As an independent my responsibility is to the people of my electorate, the region

and Queensland. I will be accountable only to the people who trusted me to represent them, not a party and certainly not a corporate sponsor.

If given the opportunity to represent the people of Barron River, I would seek to end corporate donations to political parties. This will make parties and politicians more answerable to the people who put them in the position of responsibility and remove the threat of influence from organisations and industries.

I would tackle the issue of crime with a three-tiered approach: reducing youth crime through effective youth diversion programs, pushing for stronger bail laws to reduce crimes committed by offenders on bail, and arguing for a review of the judicial system to

The only way to ensure early discovery, and successful treatment, is by having regular skin checks at least annually, if not more often, for those at higher risk.

It’s time to put the Queensland economy first Electricity prices in Queensland are too high. This is a major election issue.

CANEGROWERS has formed a Queensland Industry Energy Alliance with CCIQ and Queensland Farmers Federation to highlight ways to reduce Queensland’s skyrocketing electricity bills.

The government has a dilemma, some might call it a conflict of interest.

As the owner of the state’s electricity transmission and distribution networks, Powerlink, Ergon and Energex, it has a strong interest in both the operational efficiency and financial performance of the businesses.

With each of these businesses natural monopolies, the government sets reliability and quality standards.

It also imposes community service obligations and sets environmental standards that they must meet.

The Queensland government also has a significant voice in setting the pricing framework that the Australian Energy Regulator (in setting network prices) and the Queensland Competition Authority (in setting retail prices) must follow for Ergon’s customers.

A core principle of the pricing framework is that the companies are guaranteed a rate of return on their network investments. Higher investment leads to higher prices, a greater revenue take from customers and stronger cash flow to government.

The inter-related obligations and accountabilities create a range of tensions that blur the distinction between service provision and policy making.

Dividends to government flowing from over investment in capacity and from other charges imposed on electricity networks in the name of national competition policy has made network profitability and the government’s treasury receipts the clear winner at the expense of the Queensland economy’s international competitiveness.

With revenues exceeding expectations, electricity prices in Queensland have become highly politicised.

Prior to the election the government promised not to fix electricity prices, but to return some cash to consumers through a rebate. Although it’s only worth a carton of beer, the rebate shows the government can act.

In the election CANEGROWERS, QFF and CCIQ are calling for a more substantive response.

Several key steps will reduce prices by onethird from 2015-16 levels: write down the regulated asset base by 50%; remove hidden taxes; design and implement efficient tariffs; fund the solar bonus scheme from government revenue; and discipline generator’s bidding practices.

It’s time for all political parties to put the Queensland economy first and rein in the excesses of the state’s electricity natural monopolies.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, CANEGROWERS, and the Queensland Farmers’ Federation along with the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association have joined forces to call on all candidates in the lead up to the next State Election to make genuine policy commitments to industry to ensure immediate electricity price relief. Rising electricity costs are the number one issue for Queensland businesses.

The LAND Fair Milk Logo needs guarantee from parties This State election Queensland dairy farmers are calling on political parties to guarantee the commitment made earlier this year by the Queensland Government to fund Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) and develop its Fair Milk Logo.

QDO President Brian Tessmann said that if parties and candidates were fair dinkum about supporting the future of the dairy industry in Queensland, then it was essential that they commit to funding QDO to develop and operate an industry Fair Milk Logo scheme.

“Before the election the Labor Government announced this program and committed funding for QDO to deliver this project to benefit all Queensland dairy farmers,” said Mr. Tessmann.

“Unfortunately, due to election timing and the current caretaker government the final contract was not signed off. This leaves the future of the program in limbo.

“QDO firmly believe that Fair Milk Logo program is an essential component to guaranteeing the future of our industry in this state. Without political support the industry’s future is compromised.”

Further to the Fair Milk Logo, QDO outlined its

other major election priorities on behalf of the industry.

“As well as the Fair Milk Logo, securing the future of our industry through a series of measure to return fair returns for farmers is a major issue,” said Mr. Tessmann.

“Industry and governments need to work together to identify concrete ways to fix the imbalance of power between dairy farmers, processors and retailers.

“We need a state government willing to stand up for its dairy farmers including pressing for Federal legislative change.

“On-farm electricity prices too at hurting Queensland dairy farmers and must be addressed.

Electricity prices for dairy farmers are 3 and a half times higher than they were 8 years ago. This has made the cost electricity virtually unaffordable for dairy farmers.

“QDO is asking parties to deliver a program that funds the state’s dairy farmers to implement efficiencies for both irrigation and dairy sheds.

“This election QDO is call in all parties to support dairy farmers in this State committing to the Fair Milk Logo, commit to standing up for a fair milk prices and reduced electricity costs.”

Ensuring candidates understand concerns Farmers want some answers from the current political candidates on the issues affecting the region.

FARMERS across Mareeba and the Tablelands are taking political candidates to task this State election in an open letter outlining their key concerns.

The letter, to be sent to all candidates standing for the seats of Hill, Cook and Barron River, details 10 key questions asked by the

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA).

MDFVGA president Joe Moro said it was important the concerns of farmers across the region were heard and addressed by those standing for office this election.

The Mareeba Gladiators Rugby League Club can now get down to business of organising the club for next year’s assault on the CDRL premiership after a new executive committee was appointed following their second annual general meeting held at the clubhouse last Monday.

Former president Andrew Foster put out a call to the community last week for more volunteers to come forward to help keep the club afloat after a very

successful season in 2017.

The new committee consists of John Arcidiacono – president, Maria Strazzeri – treasurer, Wayne Reys – Vice-president and Alana Gil – Secretary.

The 2018 season has already begun with new coach Matt Wakefield putting the troops through their paces at pre-season training each Tuesday and Thursday night at Davies Park.

In total 5 kids were selected to advance to the Peninsula trials to be held at the Cairns International Tennis Centre.

After leading 27 to 19 at half time, Andy’s angels further consolidated their good first half play to take the title by 59 to 37.

The Caviliers clash with the Warriors was close and exciting throughout. Warriors were leading Caviliers narrowly by 24 to 21 at half time. At full time both teams were locked together

on 41 points. The Caviliers clinching the thrilling grqand final 56 to 49 in extra time.

For the winning Caviliers side, Zayd Myrteza was absolutely in magnificent form. He scored a grand total of 52 point with Warriors unable to control his scoring ability.

for 137 with an hours play left in the day. Looking to bat conservatively to stumps, Atherton have lost the big wickets of Gerard Fox, Paul Nasser and Pete Sceresini for 13 runs, setting the game up for an exciting day of play on Saturday.

The second grade game against Rovers at Endeavour Park was called off due to wet conditions and will revert to a one-day match this Saturday.

MAREEBA enjoyed a winning weekend of cricket across the region.

The young under 12’s kicked off the weekend travelling to Port Douglas on Saturday to play the Muddies. After losing the toss Mareeba were sent out to field keeping Port Douglas to 7/159.

Mareeba then went out to bat only to win the game by one run on the second last ball of the game to finish 6 for 160.

Best bowlers for Mareeba were Bryce

Finchim with 2 for 26 and Jonty Taylor 1 for 7 runs, with best batters Jake Bombardieri 25 not out, Ben Myles with 20 out and Jace Cureton with 20.

The under 16’s boys played in Cairns and after day one are holding their own in a two day match.

In Mareeba the third grade boys took on Barron River at Borzi Park.

Winning the toss Mareeba elected to bat, ending up with 10 for 115, with excellent batting from Nick Turner (29)

Barron were all out in the 26th over only scoring 97 runs resulting in an 18 run win to the Mareeba Team. Bowlers Luke Russo took 3/23 and Rowan Foxwell got 2/6.

On Sunday the second division team took on United Punjabi in Cairns for day one of a two day match.

The boys ended the day in a good position with United 10 for 136 off 47.2 overs and Mareeba are currently 2 for 70 off

17 overs.

Liam Bombardieri excelled himself with some brilliant bowling – 5 for 24 off 11.2 overs and Chris Adams made 42 runs.

Meanwhile the ladies side enjoyed two games and two wins on Sunday at Edmonton.

Their first match of the day against Mulgrave resulted in 3/138 – 4/101 and in game two against Norths they won 3/113 – 5/65.
