Mareeba Rodeo Grounds
Sweet deal for growers
Local derby fever The Atherton Roosters will enter enemy territory on Saturday night, where they will play Mareeba in the Tablelands derby at Davies Park. Both sides are desperate for bragging rights, along with two priceless competition points. Local Brooke Alifraco is excited ahead of Wednesday nights State of Origin and Saturday nights local clash. Head to Page 23 for Justin Fris’s preview of the big game.
MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth successfully tabled a sugar marketing bill into state parliament last week. The Bill has now been referred to the Agricultural and Environment Committee, which has up to six months to examine it and report back to parliament. Should the Bill successfully pass through parliament, it will mean that local canegrowers will have greater control of marketing their share of the sugar, along with maintaining pre-arranged options. Mr Knuth – who received support from fellow crossbenchers and constituents – said the matter was extremely important for the Far North. “The sugar cane industry is one that sits at the heart of North Queensland all the way down to the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “This Bill addresses the imbalance in market power currently existing between mill owners and growers, and protects one of our largest, yet struggling industries. “We are sitting just behind Brazil and Thailand as the world’s third largest sugar producers and now isn’t the time for politicians to sit on their hands – the industry called for assistance, and we have deliv-
ered what they need. Unless this issue is addressed the anti- competitive actions of corporate monopolies will have no obstacle when it comes to taking advantage of our producers.” Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said she was very happy that the bill had made it into parliament. “We worked with Shane in tabling the draft Bill,” she said. “We are very happy the Bill made it into parliament and that the KAP has got their heads around the importance of this issue. “We have also organised a meeting with Member for Cook Billy Gordon to canvas his support.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter welcomed Mr Knuth’s Bill; and said it was vital that any future monopolies in the industry be avoided at all costs. “The irrationality of people that advocate competition and free markets and then to please their corporate masters impose a monopoly on the farmers, it knows no bounds,” he said. “This monopoly has resulted in cane farmers realising you can’t make money out of sugar cane, so we close a sugar mill in Australia every two years now.”

A good cause ST STEPHEN’S Catholic College captain Joshua Priestley recently participated in the Great Wheelbarrow Race as a solo competitor. The Mareeba teen pushed himself mentally and physically in the three day challenge to raise money and awarness for Rosies, a local charity assisting those less fortunate in the community. Josh raised almost $2,000 for his chosen charity and was overwhelmed with the support he received from the local community. “I already had heard about Rosies,” he said. “But when we were thinking of a charity, we were thinking something local and something close to school.” After his dad had spent time volunteering with Rosies, Joshua followed suit earlier this year and
volunteers on a roster basis. Local Rosies representative Ann Sarra praised Joshua for his commitment and said: “This has been a tremendous accomplishment for Josh and family involving many long hours of training on top of preparation and then the actual event of the whole weekend. “Considering Josh is in year 12 and captain at St Stephen’s Catholic College, plus part time work and swimming, this generous, dedication to Rosies is inspirational. “We are truly grateful and appreciate the great effort been made by Josh and his family.”

EARLY year level teachers and personnel engaged in an exciting educational and networking session last Wednesday afternoon at Mareeba State School. The framework of the session – which encompasses several different entities within the industry – is designed to help children excel early in their educational chapter of life. MSS Principal Mandy Whybird said if children can develop early at school, more often than not this trend continues. “If they are successful in early life,

The sessions (which occur approximately once every three months) are designed to educate local kindergarten teachers, parents and educational staff on important skills which can be used to enhance their various roles. With 30 representatives (including all Mareeba kindergarten facilities) at the session, it made for lively dialogue; and benefits that our local children will gratefully benefit from.

False Panama TR4 case cleared By Justin Fris MARK Reppel’s banana farm in Mareeba has been officially cleared of Panama Tropical Race 4 disease, after returned test results indicated a false positive. In a major embarrassment for Biosecurity in our state – Mr Reppel received a knock on his door last Monday morning – with officials informing that his ordeal of uncertainty was over. Mr Reppel went on the record to local media about his whirlwind experience; and despite an overwhelming relief for both family and employees on his property, their thoughts would still remain with those impacted by a confirmed case of Panama TR4 in Tully. Acting Chief Biosecurity Officer Malcolm Letts said that various quarantine conditions which had impacted the property for five weeks had been formally wiped by authorities. “The initial positive result we received from this property last month, using a PCR test, has proven to be a ‘false positive’,” he said. “Since the initial positive result in early April, we have
been conducting further surveillance and testing samples from the property. This has been a complex process, but the final definitive vegetative compatibility group (VCG) test result is negative for Tropical Race 4. “To our knowledge this is the first time there has been evidence of a problem with this diagnostic test anywhere in the world. Mr Letts concluded that local growers should maintain due diligence with both quarantine and surveillance practices. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter lambasted the major political parties, for both playing a part in the closure of two biosecurity laboratories in Townsville. “This didn’t occur when we had biosecurity in Townsville,” he said. “Brisbane is in one corner of the state and 2,000 km from the demographic centre yet instead of putting biosecurity in the centre of the state, they put it at the extremity. “This decision by Government breaches every principle of disease outbreak – the further you have to move the bacteria to get the testing done, the higher the chances of imperfections in the system.”
Panama Tropical Race 4 has dominated headlines in the Far North over the last two months.
Momentum continues to elude TRC meetings By Justin Fris IN employment, life, relationships or sport, momentum plays a major factor in how outcomes are executed. Last Thursday morning, onlookers were again able to witness a council which is unable to translate positive momentum from agreeable outcomes, into those with conflict. A casting vote was used twice; several report items were deferred, which eroded much of the progression gained from non-debatable agenda items. The regular to and fro began from item one on the agenda, with Cr Rod Marti concerned

about TRC reporting officers potentially being pressured by fellow councillors into compromising their stance on the particular item. Cr Marti added that if certain councillors had visited and spoken with parties affected prior to the vote, it was only fair that all councillors received an opportunity to be invited. These views were swiftly refuted by both Mayor Lee Long and planning officers, with Cr’s Marti, Shaaron Linwood and Marjorie Pagani again falling to topple the casting vote. Tempers would flair periodically throughout the remainder of the morning, with more topic variations than an episode of Family Feud. Cr Linwood quizzed council officers about
Malanda not having its cement mixer replaced, meaning all jobs in Malanda would require workers to cart said cement mixer to and from Atherton. Although the room did not have a definitive response, it appears the TRC is keen to sell ‘non continual’ use items from all three previous existing shires. Cr Linwood’s maiden victory for the day occurred two items later, where she successfully had an alternative motion passed, in regard to a landfill remediation tender. Instead of originally awarding a tender to externally-based Allciv Civil Contractors, it went to local company Watto’s Earthmoving and Machinery Hire for $919, 175,97.
SIMCRAFT
It wouldn’t be a complete outing at the TRC without two parties engaging in a heated argument at the close of the meeting and this meeting was no different. Unimpressed with Mayor Lee Long’s questioning her TRC level of representation at a recent wind farm function, Cr Pagani lambasted Mayor Lee Long as she formally closed the meeting. With elections only a year out, many of the councillors are playing for their council livelihood. Ratepayers ultimately have the final say and should conduct or underperformance from councillors continue to dominate meetings some could well find themselves delisted.

MAREEBA Shire Council has approved construction for stage one of the multipurpose sporting precinct last Wednesday. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the result would be extremely satisfying for all representatives of the sporting precinct reference group. “A community reference group has been meeting for the past 18 month to develop a multi-purpose recreational precinct in Mareeba. Mareeba Netball Club has successfully applied for funding from the Queensland Government to construct Stage One of the Master Plan,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “All groups represented in the reference group agree to the siting of courts within Davies Park, cricket pitch at Firth Park and walking paths around the parks. Further consultation and research is required to ascertain the appropriate sitting of a possible multi-purpose complex” Cr Gilmore said. “The first stage involves establishing netball/basketball multipurpose courts opposite the Mareeba State High School, upgrading the cricket field at Eales Park and establishing bike paths and walk ways connecting the various sites at the precinct. Netball will convene a Project Management Group to construct the new facilities in Stage one and once the final design has been completed by the group, they will be submitted to Council for final approval.”
Mayor Attwood calls for common sense approach ETHERIDGE Shire Council Mayor Will Attwood says that he backs the cautious approach adopted by the Abbott Government, in light of recent developments of the live export trade. Vision of Australian cattle being executed in Vietnam by sledgehammers has been aired on national television, with many activists calling for the trade to be disbanded. “The growth and well-being of our community is dependent on the grazing industry,” he said. “The emotive and knee jerk response to the last reported incident in regards to the inappropriate mistreatment of Australian cattle has had a devastating effect on our community.”

MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has urged a rethink from the Palaszczuk Government in regard to biosecurity in the Far North. Mr Knuth – a long term supporter of regional projects in the region – called on Agricultural Minister Bill Byrne to install a new biosecurity facilty in Townsville. “The recent false positive test results supplied by Biosecurity Queensland which initially claimed the Panama Disease TR4 was found on a Banana farm in my electorate has had a devastating impact on the industry,” he said. “Watermelon, cucumber, zucchini and other vegetables in my electorate have been under the microscope for the cucumber mosaic virus, clearly the level of protection needed hasn’t been provided.” Mr Knuth warned that unless important steps were taken to remain vigilant, future results may not be so complimentary. “Transporting potentially diseased test subjects half way across the state increases the likelihood of further contamination,” Mr Knuth said. “The north has the majority of produce and cattle; keep it in the area and test it in the area.”

Healthchecks for Hopevale 70 Hopevale locals took advantage of free health checks that were offered to the town recently by the Apunipima Cape York Health Council. Dr Mel Scrace, who completed the checks, said she was felt satisfied that local members of the community were able to access vital services. “It was a really good opportunity to provide people with valuable information on their health and to educate them about maintenance and prevention of chronic disease,” she said.

Pool pleas for stolen memories June Cotter wants her stolen items (which contain priceless photos and historical items) to be returned. By Justin Fris LOCAL swimming icon June Cotter has urged for a local thief to seek help, after the Mareeba Swimming Pool was burgled last Monday. The thief, who stole Ms Cotter’s iphone and tablet, was caught on CCTV as he attempted to make a getaway. “It’s really unacceptable behaviour,” she said. “I mean, if the guy needs money; or is going through a tough time, he should seek help.” But it is what is on both devices which Ms Cotter is more upset about. Various historical information and rare photos of Mareeba Swimming Club history within both devices are missing. “Even if the photos are downloaded and sent to us (the swimming club) in a mail bag, that is fine,” she said. “The iphone has already been locked, so it is unusable. “As long as I get the photos and historical
information back, that’s all that matters to me.” The feeling of having your business or home invaded by unwelcomed company is never pleasant, especially in such a family-friendly environment. Ms Cotter praised local schoolchildren who had come to see how herself and staff were coping, along with the ‘Work for the Dole’ team who complete various maintenance tasks at the pool. “The ‘Work for the Dole’ team (through QITE) that come here are always excellent,” she said. “Quite often they come voluntarily, even when they aren’t rostered on. “They in particular, have been very concerned about what has happened.” Mareeba Swimming Club has had over 40,000 hits on its Facebook page (at time of writing), as locals unite together for their club. In terms of the thief in question, Ms Cotter said: “Mate, if you need help, please get help from the authorities who can assist you.”

Maintain awareness of macular degeneration By Justin Fris MAREEBA optometrist John Holme is one of many within his field, determined to quell current rates of Macalular Degeneration (MD) in Australia. MD is the leading cause of both blindness and severe loss of vision in our country; which affects more than 1.15 million Australians aged over 50. Within his premesis, Mr Holme has brand new technology at his disposal, which can help diagnosis MD (among many conditions) in its infancy; which can improve treatment options. “Finding out is as easy as visiting your local optometrist for an eye test and macula check,” he said. “The very early signs of MD can now be identified easily by modern technology, which enables the optometrist to see into the retina at the back of the eye, where the disease develops and detect the early stages of the disease.” MD Foundation Australia CEO Julie Heraghty added: “Testing is essential and symptom recognition is critical to saving sight,” she said. “MD is a chronic disease requiring early detection and diagnosis. In the case of the wet form, it can progress very quickly and requires urgent treatment to save sight. “All Australians over 50 should have a regular eye test and macular check.”

Mixed opinion from audience By Justin Fris
SUPPORTERS for and against the Mt Emerald Wind Farm attended a senate committee meeting regarding wind turbines in Cairns last Monday. From overall health – all the way through to economic and social impacts of wind turbines – the ‘Select Committee on Wind Turbines’ addressed all via the public forum. The Mt Emerald Wind Farm project recently received a rubber stamp of approval from Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, giving the development application the green light. Ratch (in partnership with Port Bajool, a local property developer) have indicated up to 150 local jobs will be created once the site opens for business. Ratch’s business development GM Anil Nangia said he was confident the forum provided a solid opportunity for attendees to gain further understanding of the project. “The Mount Emerald Wind Farm will make a positive economic contribution to local, regional and national economies. It is expected to generate around $150 million of direct investment in Queensland,” Mr Nangia said. “Peak employment during the construction phase can be expected to rise to around 155 jobs while 15 permanent jobs will be created to operate the wind farm. “Ratch encourages the committee to consider the findings of the numerous previous inquiries which have found that the wind energy sector is well regulated, and
that wind energy delivers significant economic benefits to regional communities at very low cost to electricity consumers.” Mr Nangia headed to Mareeba last Wednesday, where he gave a short presentation at a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce function. After stating that construction of the project would approximately take two years, Mr Mangia said $70-90 million of project costs would be spent on the Tablelands. Tablelands Regional Councillor Marjorie Pagani – who has vocally opposed the Mt Emerald Wind Farm from the off – addressed her concerns during last Thursday’s council meeting. “I must say they were (Tablelands residents) unsupportive of Ratch during the hearing,” she said. “The evidence given by Ratch contradicted themselves; some of which we had within council documents, which I have tendered. “The senate gave us an extremely good hearing and sympathised with the people of this area, who have been totally ignored during this process, by the developer and the state.” Port Bajool director John Morris said the project would provide important growth for the Far North, along with investment opportunities. “This has the potential to give impetus to the growth of industry and business in the Far North Queensland region.” “Mt Emerald will also encourage a positive investment environment for future projects that will help grow a local renewable generation network that in-

Lions festival set to roar in Dimbulah DIMBULAH will be awash with colour and excitement on Saturday, May 30, with the 2015 Lions Festival set to captivate the local community. A series of exciting entertainment options have been organised for the event, which will culminate with the crowning of the ‘Festival Queen and King’ at the end of the night. Dimbulah Lions Club member Brendon Goldsworthy said the event is healthily attended each year; and this year provided a new challenge. “This year has seen the highest number of entrants within the ‘Queen’ competition,” he said. “All of the finalists are tremendous ambassadors in the community, which will make it extremely tough for the judges.” Mr Goldsworthy added the multicultural appeal of the festival, with a vast array of cultures represented in the various food stands at the festival. “The 10 ‘Queen’ finalists will all be on top of their own floats during the street parade,” he said. “This will commence around 5pm at the park precinct.” After the festival’s official opening from local dignitaries (including Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore) a raft of community organisations will showcase the full range of their talents. Members of Mareeba State High School’s band will perform a 20 minute set, before a combined
‘Saints’ band (St Thomas’s Parish School and St Stephen’s) will take to the stage. Talented local country singer Becci Nethery will also perform several of her signature tunes, which has seen her climb up the current Australian country music chart. For those interested in seeing the various competitions, you will need to stick around til at least 9pm, where all winners and entrants will be formally recognised to the crowd. Mr Goldsworthy concluded that it was a fantastic opportunity for local organisations to participate and be a part of the festival. The popular food village returns and will be a favourite as always with a series of community organisations running food stalls on the night. Festival organisers would like to recognise the outstanding support received from several sponsors across a multitude of levels. Gold level sponsors for this year’s festival include Bendigo Community Bank, TGT and Total Food Network. Silver level sponsor is Lindsay Transport and Bronze sponsors include: Sunwater, Dimbulah Foodworks, Casali’s and Incetic Pivot, along with Mareeba Shire Council. There are also many other businesses and organisations who have supported the 2015 festival.

A message from Dimbulah Lions President Geoff Lawrance... As president of the Dimbulah Lions Club, it again gives me great pleasure in announcing that the Dimbulah Lions Festival is on again, this Saturday. Each year, without fail, our hard working club of volunteers give freely of their time to put on this annual spectacle which is enjoyed by a variety of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Last year’s festival was no doubt a success and, suffice to say, the best one yet. And as a result, carried with it great financial reward; and I would like to personally thank all of you who were able to come out and enjoy the evening with us. Already this financial year, we are approaching close to
$40,000 of donations that have been distributed back into the local community. We are always looking to help out where we can and undertake new projects that will benefit our small community. An example of this, is the bus shelter that is going to be erected in the coming months outside the Dimbulah State School, so students no longer have to worry about getting wet when it is raining. It is extremely important to remember that none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of not only our community but also our major sponsors of the Dimbulah Lions Festival. We personally thank our gold sponsors: Mareeba Dimbulah Community Bank Branches Bendigo Bank, TGT & Total Food Network, silver sponsor Lindsay Transport and bronze sponsors: Casail’s, Dimbulah Foodworks, Sunwater & Incitec Pivot; who have once again come on board to support our great event, and I strongly urge each and every one of you to support these businesses who give so generously.

I also must thank the Mareeba Shire Council for their financial in kind support. Cr Nipper Brown and staff have once again been very supportive of our needs for which we are very grateful. This year’s festival promises not to disappoint. This year we have a staggering number of queen entrants, 10 in total, and two charity king entrants. These young ladies and gentlemen have been very busy selling raffle tickets, on the behalf of the club, over the last six weeks and I wish them all the very best and thank them for their contribution to the Dimbulah Lions Club. One lucky lady will secure her place history when she is crowned Queen of the Dimbulah Lions Festival 2015. In addition to the queen entrants we have plenty to keep the crowd entertained ranging from performances from local schools, Zumba displays, dance performances from the Dance Agency, which is always a crowd favourite. We are also very pleased to be showcasing a performance from local Chillagoe songstress, Becci Nethery, who has recently released a single that is currently sitting at # 14 in the Australian Country Music charts and # 2 in Proud to the Tasmanian Country support the Music charts. Later Dimbulah Li ons in the evening, local Festival! Cairns band W84me Come & watch will be on hand to keep the street parade at the every one entertained Junction! and in the party mood till late into the night. As always there will be the great food fest that has a wonderful selection of food to feed the hungry bellies and for those that have young families there is a variety of rides on hand to cater for all ages and abilities. In closing, I would like to thank my fellow Lions and Lions Ladies. They all lead busy lives yet somehow have found the time over the last few months to help out where they can to ensure that the Dimbulah Lions Festival tradition continues.

Tradesman-like Tully get the job done By Justin Fris
TULLY continued its reign on top of the CDRL ladder, after defeating the Mareeba Gladiators 38-12 at Davies Park last Saturday night. Both sides would have been disappointed with certain elements of the match, on what was a beautiful night for football. Despite the convincing nature of the scoreboard – Tully never rose to any great heights in the match – a point which was raised by Tigers coach Leon Hallie in his post-match interview. Mareeba showed great endeavour for lengthy periods of the game, but simply didn’t get reward for effort; due to sloppy handling errors. The visitors got the jump on the home side within the opening five minutes of the match, maintaining a superb line in attack, along with masterful cover defence. Leroy Rankin and Matt Laumea combined beautifully for the game’s first try, feeding Aaron Jolley through a small gap. Jolley was a fleet of foot throughout the night, with defenders unable to catch him whenever he had possession of the ball. After the restart, the Gladiators were again living dangerously, with Tully forward Matthew Di Mauro charging through four defenders like a wrecking ball. It took the home side 14 minutes to pose their first attacking threat, but when they did, it translated into points. Attacking the Leagues Club end of Davies Park, the Gladiators line spread the ball neatly to Mervyn Walker, who crept through the tiniest of holes and scored his first of two for the night. There have been some strange scoring sequences at Davies Park this season, and this match was no different. In a remarkable six minute spell between the 22nd and 28th minute – both sides went end to end – with Tully scoring two tries, with Mareeba’s effort completing the trifecta. Home supporters were enthused by the Gladiators’ effort, as they had scored two tries from their two genuine attacking opportunities. Tully seemed somewhat ‘off the boil’ toward half time and looked anything but a side keen to stamp its premiership credentials.
When Pride product Alex Starmer narrowed the margin to 16-12 after 53 minutes, home supporters may have been dreaming of a major upset. Apenisa Cakanasiga was excellent in defence all night for the home side, which did not go unnoticed by those in the crowd. But whether they got momentarily complacent or they feared a tongue lashing from Coach Hallie after the game, Tully got down to business in the final 17 minutes of the match. After Troy Kaepa’s try wrested proceedings back into the visitors’ safekeeping, Tully disarmed the Gladiators further with a subsequent three try burst in seven minutes. The most disappointing of the three tries conceded by the home side during the burst was the first one - where winger Rhylan Rees refused to catch the ball for some reason -with the ball looping lovingly into the arms of Kaepa for his second try in seven minutes. Tries to Tim Savage and Jermaine Stone iced the victory for the visitors, who will be keen for a solid showing in their southern coastal derby next week against Brothers Innisfail. The Gladiators will take some heart from this performance, with Saturday’s Tablelands derby against Atherton a pure coin flip. Post-game, Coach Hallie said: “We knew they were going to be hard to start of with,” he said. “It was just a matter of being patient and just trying to wear them out a bit, which I think we did well. “But there was just a patch there in the second half, where we
Bulls tame Lions The Mareeba Bulls maintain their unbeaten record and five point lead at the top of the FNQ Premier League table, after a tense 1-nil away win over the Leichhardt Lions on Sunday, in Cairns. A piece of brilliance from Bulls striker Paul Ruiz was the only difference on the scoreboard with the speedy attacker acrobatically, side footing the ball, over Lions custodian Nathan Haydon from the edge of the 18 yard box in the 31st minute. Both sides went for it in an entertaining first 45 minutes with former Bulls striker Simeon Malahoff enjoying the Lions best chance in the opening half, testing Bulls keeper Julian Madrid with two good chances. In the second period the Bulls, though enjoying the Lions share of possession and field position, was
left the door open a little bit, but we got back on track and finished well.” Hallie added that he was keen to keep his side fresh – by mixing things up at training – as his men prepare for the second round of fixtures. “It’s tough because we lost a few players from last year and we’ve had to start again in a way,” he said. “It’s good winning, but when you keep winning this early, you get a bit flat second round; so it’s all about mixing it up and keeping the boys fresh.” Tully recorded a 28-14 victory over Mareeba in reserve grade, with the home side playing a man short for the entire second half. The visitors also came up trumps in the U/18’s, with a 32-24 win.

unable to build on the lead with Haydon keeping the scoreline at 1-nil with a couple of fine saves in the dying minutes. “We knew it was going to be tough, they are a very direct side and look to play to their strengths, we were made to work for it, and credit to our boys we came out of top again with some good football”. Said Coach Alex Srhoj. The Bulls now have two weeks off in a row, with Srhoj not to complementing when it came to discuss the time line ahead. “We haven’t had three games in a row yet, we played five in two weeks, now one in the next three. Its hard for us to get any consistency. But we will deal with what we have”. The Bulls next game is not until the June 13, 2015.
MAREEBA Suncorp Bank staff raised $560 for the 2015 Great Wheelbarrow Race team ‘72 Models’. All proceeds will go towards the Mareeba Netball Association. Austart homes also pitched in with $500. The team this year raised just over $1000.00, the lucky winners of the Jelly Bean count was Cameron Oyalm and the very lucky winner of the Wheelbarrow filled with all adult goodies was Michelle Bryce. Pictured right are: Valentina Caamano - Branch Manager Mareeba, 72 Models team captain Andrea Crooks, team member Rachael Morgan and local Netball players Shenika, Holly, Shae and Kendra.

Medallists: Bridget Seymour-Jones, Tim Ford and Jennifer Moss all acquitted themselves with distinction at the Championship meet.
The Oceania Track and Field Championships was held at Barlow Park in Cairns between May 8 and 10. More than 450 athletes from 21 International Athletics Federations attended the carnival from countries including: New Zealand, Samoa, New Guinea, Vanuatu, Australia, Tahiti and New Caledonia. Iconic athletes attending as ambassadors were Lord Sebastian Coe (former 800m Olympic champion) and Sergei Bubka (former pole vault world record holder). Over 100 Athletics officials were selected from all over Australia and Federated Countries to oversee this prestigious International event. Tableland Athletics was particularly well represented at all levels, with Tim Ford representing Australia in their team of 58 athletes in the U/18 Shot put and Discus, Jennifer Moss in the U/18 Ham-
mer and Bridget Seymour-Jones in the U/18 Long jump and the 100m relay representing the Regional Australia team. Allied with them from the Tableland Athletics Club were four officials: Dean Grummitt, Chris Tsilemanis, Andrew Ford and Penny Goulter holding high positions. Exhibition athletes also competed and there were 15 athletes from the Club competing in varying events. Tim Ford attained silver medals in both Discus and Shot Put, Jennifer won bronze in the Hammer Throw and Bridget was a member of the 4 x 100m relay team which collected a bronze medal also. This was the first International Carnival for these young athletes and a resounding success was achieved by local athletes at a level that requires not only a committed training regime but a high level of dedication and motivation to the sport of Athletics.

EXPRESS sPORT Stars shine again in U/10’s hockey
Roosters and Gladiators gear up for Tablelands derby By Justin Fris BOTH Atherton and Mareeba will fancy their chances of victory in Saturday night’s Tablelands Derby at Davies Park. The Roosters will travel up the Kennedy Highway into enemy territory, buoyed by recent good form and a week’s rest. Roosters coach Jamie Blain has worked wonders with his team since the Easter Thursday’s performance against Suburbs. Despite receiving a 38-12 loss to Tully last week, the Gladiators showed great endeavour against a real premiership threat. The home side has the ability to rattle anyone on their day, but fitness and handling errors continue to be their achilles heel. In order for the home side to walk away with derby honours, they will
need to remain relatively error-free and take opportunities given to them. Apenisa Cakanasiga has been excellent in defence this season, while Phil Nona and Mervyn Walker have also performed well. All of these players must stand up to be counted on Saturday night. The Roosters will fancy their chances of victory if they can control the middle of the field and wear out the Gladiators with constant corridor gut running. If they hammer the middle long enough, defenders gradually tire and massive holes will open up for the likes of Jacob Rivett and Waylon Joseph. The importance of the kicking game could well pave the way for how victory plays out. Roosters halfback Darryl Grant has been extremely beneficial, especially with converting tries. Kicking (both in conversations and general play) has been a real problem for the Gladiators. They don’t appear
to have a reliable goalkicker; and too often their kicks on the 5th tackle fail to hurt the opposition. A good 5th tackle kick will see the ball bisect the backs and force them to dart back into their own in-goal and retrieve the ball. Instead, opposition players often get the ball kicked straight back to them, resulting in an easy changeover. Local derbies are strange, but wonderful things. Quite often, ladder positions are irrelevant and players rise to the atmosphere and display passion for their town. Both Atherton and Mareeba are extremely passionate when it comes to rugby league and anticipation has been building in both towns for several days. If the match is close in the final 10 minutes – either side is capable of victory – which would mean two priceless points and local bragging rights.
WITH only a few points separating the leaderboard for the U/10’s, games are being hotly contested. The Sharks, ably supported by Daniel Genge, Travis Darr and Paige Brown, excelled on the field in both defence and attack; and were able to put one in the box. However Tayltha McDonald and Max Williams shared the honours in scoring for the All Stars, with an eventual 3-1 win. Atherton also outplayed Yungaburra with Adam Keevers, T. Lawrence and P.Stevens all scoring in their 5-0 win. The U/13’s held a regional training clinic, where skills development was top of the agenda. A fantastic morning for all the players, with special thanks to the Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program for supporting the day; and to Wes Ferns and
Chris Mitchell for leading the sessions. The U/18 All Stars took on the Voodoos in a very tight match with the All Stars girls managing to get two in the box and come out eventual winners 2-1. In a great display of determination, the 13Boys defeated the Jaguars 2-0. Clem Lucy was the standout player of the day. In the Ladies, the Cougars couldn’t hold off the Shooters, with Jess Finlen being dominate in the box; whilst the Voodoos scored the narrowest of victories over the Cruisers. The Veterans team, Plastered Vets, maintained their dominance on the field with Chrissie Debrueys scoring a hat trick of goals in their win over Waterloo. In the final match of the day, the Rebels had a resounding 5-1 win over Woteva.
A group of four former Mareeba rugby league players and supporters are working to produce a historical book that will feature the history of rugby league across the Mareeba and Tablelands region. The four, who include former Mareeba, Easts, Wests, Eacham, North Queensland and state halfback Les Cahill, and former players Denis McKinley, Barry Simpson and John Arcidiacono, will all complete the voluntary project over the coming months, which will no doubt become a limited edition item in years to come. The group are excited about sharing the story with you.
Bowler Barry bound for Belfast By Justin Fris
LOCAL lawn bowler Barry Lynne is preparing to represent both Australia and Mareeba on the international stage. Taking up bowling during his mid-twenties, Mr Lynne has not let anything stand in his away; let along deafness. The World Deaf Bowls Championships will be held in Belfast later this year, with Mr Lynne keen to represent his country with distinction. Naturally, the cost of competing in such an event is exorbitant; with bowlers expected to meet their own ac-

commodation and travel costs. As ever, the local community has shown that generosity overrides most challenges, with Tableland Hardware donating a hamper of goods, which will be raffled off. All proceeds from the raffle will be passed on to Mr Lynne and used for him to meet his expenses. He said he was sure that Australia would go over to Belfast and ‘thrash’ the opposition! Other nations that will participate in the championships include: Ireland, New Zealand, Wales, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland. Australia will be coordinated by Barry Knapman and Anne Jeavons.
