QUEENSLAND’S Women’s Week provides us with the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the state’s women and girls, and it’s an initiative that continues to grow every year.

That growth was evident last Tuesday as nearly 70 women and men descended upon the Mareeba Leagues Club for the Mareeba Women’s Afternoon Tea, of which was hosted by Member for Cook Cynthia Lui. The event’s special guest speakers were the Minister for Child Safety Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Di Farmer along with former Senator for Queensland Jan McLucas.

Both Ms Farmer and Ms McLucas spoke passionately about respecting women, em-

bracing gender equality, and promoting and protecting the rights, interests and wellbeing of women and girls.

Ms Farmer, who holds the seat of Bulimba for the State Government, said it was an honour to come up to Far North Queensland and hear the stories of the women and girls who help shape the region.

“It was great to see so many women and men at the event pushing for greater equality,” she said.

“It’s so important that the women and men of Mareeba are showing that they want to advance the cause, because the government can’t do it on their own.”

Key inequality statistics Ms Farmer alluded to were the gender pay gap, differences in su-

perannuation between men and women, lack of leadership positions for women and the likelihood with which women will be victims of domestic violence.

“With the gender pay gap currently at 18%; women earning 37% less superannuation and with one woman murdered by her current or former partner every week in this country, there’s still a whole range of issues which needs addressing,” she said.

Ms Farmer said although there is still plenty of work to be done to ensure complete parity, she noted that it is imperative to celebrate the enormous strides we have taken as a society at closing the gap as it relates to gender inequality.

“It’s fantastic how far we’ve come, and that’s because of the

wonderful women and men who continue their fight on behalf of women throughout the country,” she said.

“The theme for this year’s Women’s Week is ‘Invest in women. Invest in the future’, which is a crucial message.

“And our State Government is doing just that through our grants program, where we’ve funded a diverse range of activities such as workshops and functions among others to help raise awareness for gender equality.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the event was great for gaining a further insight into what the Mareeba residents want to achieve for equality moving forward.

“These events are significant because it drives healthy conversation around gender equality,”

she said.

“It’s an issue that needs to be discussed, and the Women’s Week does a great job at highlighting just how much change is required.”

Ms Lui said she would like to thank the community for supporting the afternoon tea.

“I wasn’t expecting this strong of a response,” she said.

“To have 70 women and men on-board makes me really proud as a representative of this region, because if we want to influence change, we need to do it together.”

Ms Lui said she would also like to acknowledge Ms Farmer and Ms McLucas for engaging with locals and presenting speeches with such a powerful message.

Aviation set to take off

IT was an historic day for Far North Queensland’s aviation industry last Thursday as dozens of key political figures, businesspeople and members of the Tablelands community gathered for the official opening of Stage 1 of the Mareeba Airport.

The 23 million dollar project included the construction of a 52-lot commercial precinct connected to water, sewerage, power and telecommunications services.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he believes it is the most significant development of general aviation in Far North Queensland for a generation.

“Because of its close proximity to the Cairns International Airport, the Mareeba Airport has not reached its full potential for over 70 years,” he said.

“However as a result of the grants received, this relic of the Second World War has now become central to flight training and general aviation maintenance services in the north.”

Cr Gilmore said the facility stands as a testament to the benefit of cooperation between three levels of government who see an opportunity for regional development.

“We grasped the chance to broaden the economic base and deliver future prosperity to the region at large,” he said.

“This is undoubtedly a regional asset which will soon

become a nursery for aviation based investment, job creation and overall economic success.”

Cr Gilmore thanked an extensive list of politicians, members of the aviation industry, businesspeople and the public for their overwhelming support throughout.

“It has been a long and tedious process, and without their help we wouldn’t be celebrating this momentous occasion,” he said.

Australia Senator Ian Macdonald was also in attendance for the grand opening, and he noted just how big of a boost this airport will be for Mareeba, the Tablelands and the entirety of North Queensland.

“I am extremely passionate about northern Australia, and it makes me proud to see projects of this scale come to this part of the country,” he said.

“There have been plenty of trials and tribulations to get to where we are now as it relates to this development, and I have to credit Tom Gilmore and the Mareeba Shire Council for persevering and not being daunted when they were faced with complications.”

Senator Macdonald said with developments such as the Mareeba Airport Upgrade, it reinforces the importance of having prosperous regional communities to ensure the sustainability of our nation’s economy.

“We only have 5 million people in the north, yet we produce more than 50% of Australia’s export earnings, and it is places

upgrade will bring for the Tablelands long-term, however it’s crucial that we continue visionary projects like this to ensure we don’t remain stagnant as an economy.”

The third and final speaker at the grand opening was the Min-

ister for Fire and Emergency Services and Labor Party Member for Barron River Craig Crawford, who was a representative on behalf of Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Ms Palaszcuk was scheduled to attend the opening, however

was unable to make the trip after the plane she was set to board was deemed unfit to fly.

Stage 2 of the Mareeba Airport Upgrade is currently under construction and will consist of the strengthening of the runway and a parallel taxiway.

Local manufacturer receives Made in Queensland grant

MAREEBA manufacturer Homefab is set to make its mark in Far North Queensland and create more jobs thanks to a $425,211 grant from the Palaszczuk Government’s $40 million Made in Queensland program.

The grant comes less than two years after they received $125,837 in funding to introduce business process management software and deliver factory layout improvements, a grant which was also as part of the Made in Queensland program.

Homefab is an award-winning manufacturer of steelframed building components – tested to cyclonic wind loadings, is termite and borer proof and not combustible.

Established in 1989, the reputable Mareeba business has proven itself to be a valued member of the North Queensland fabrication community.

Homefab’s continued success is a far cry from the concerns they were experiencing in 2015 after the business’s long-time owner decided to retire.

That was until three of Homefab’s most respected employees Peta- Maree Broadley, Benjamin Bolen and Brian Cater decided to go in partnership together to keep the business afloat and in doing so have taken the company to even greater heights.

“It wasn’t something any

of us expected to do, however all we knew was that we didn’t want Homefab to go under,” Managing Director Peta-Maree Broadley said.

“Our ownership ended up being a case of circumstance.”

Ms Broadley said it is Homefab’s customer service which sets their operation apart.

“We are with you every step of the way and I think our customers are very appreciative of that,” she said.

“We are not your normal project builders where you go in and it’s a set design, you can come in with something as little as a stick design and we will be able to work with you and ensure it is fully customised.”

Ms Broadley said she welcomed the Queensland Government’s commitment and noted that the Made in Queensland funding will assist the Homefab team with its project of advanced manufacturing technologies.

“Homefab has come a long way over the 28 years – we currently have 12 full-time employees at our facility at Mareeba and this grant will help us adopt even more innovative processes and new technologies and expand at a faster rate,” she said.

Confidence in Local Business THE results of Tablelands Regional Council’s Tablelands Business Confidence Survey are in and Mayor Joe Paronella is happy with the results provided by the region’s business community.

Cr Paronella said the annual survey is an initiative of the TRC Economic Development Strategy 2018–22 and asks local businesses to provide a measure of the region’s economy based on how optimistic they are about their future.

“It’s a chance for local businesses to provide feedback on key economic issues and guide

how we can grow businesses, employment and investment in our region,” he said.

“It’s good to see local business are positive about the future, although I recognise they are cautious, and that there is a strong demand for local products and services.”

“Particularly heartening is that nearly 37% of business are planning on increasing investment in their business and more than 20% are looking to hire additional staff.”

Cr Paronella said the most positive things for the region’s local businesses are customer

loyalty and brand recognition, and he noted that this is a real reminder of the importance of shopping locally.

“Rising business costs are a concern and that’s something we’re going to pay particular attention to by engaging with businesses later in the year to identify what costs and regulations they’re most concerned about,” he said.

“The results of this survey will guide our economic development activities throughout 2019, including our quarterly business forums and sessions during small business week in May.”

Stage 2 underway for Amaroo Village After years in the making, Stage 2 of a multimillion dollar investment in Mareeba’s future is officially underway.

EXCITEMENT is starting to build at Amaroo Estate as construction of Stage 2 of the Amaroo Village development commenced last week.

The multi-million dollar project is set to deliver residents on the eastern side of town greater accessibility to commercial services in the region.

Amaroo Estate’s Land Sales and Marketing Manager Debbie Sweedman said years of planning have gone into this project.

“The original town planning approval was gained some 10 years ago now,” she said.

“This stage, including a Chemist and Pathology, compliments Stage 1, Amaroo Medical, which was built back in 2015 and has proven to be a huge success.”

Ms Sweedman said Stage 2’s construction is programmed to be completed by August this year.

“The site earthworks commenced some months ago with electricity, sewerage, stormwater and reticulated water services extended to the building site proper,” she said.

“Earthworks are all but completed barring the asphaltic surfacing of the car park extension.

“The building contract was let to a local Mareeba builder a few weeks ago and building works commenced last week and the slab is scheduled to be poured tomorrow.”

Ms Sweedman said since the commencement of the Amaroo residential estate in 2007, more than 250 residential house sites have been created.

“Most have homes constructed on them now and there are plans to construct many more in the future,” she said “Along with other neighbouring estates, Mareeba’s Eastern

Precinct has continually grown over the years and was in need of a low level commercial area to service its residents.

“With Stage 2 of Amaroo Village now well underway and with other stages planned for the future, Amaroo plans to satisfy the ever increasing needs of the local community as it develops and grows over time.”

Etheridge Shire see substantial hike in land value

VALUATION notices outlining updated land valuations were issued for 16,970 properties throughout rural Queensland last week.

Queensland’s Valuer-General Neil Bray said the valuations reflected up to date and current rural land values.

“Confidence in the state’s rural economy has been reflected in an increase in the majority of the

state’s rural land values,” he said.

“This increase in rural land values can be attributed to the continued effects of strengthened beef prices and low interest rates, which have generally resulted in increases in Queensland’s rural property markets.”

One such local government area which saw significant increases in rural land sales was that of Etheridge Shire, as they

experienced an uptick in land value to the tune of 43 per cent.

As a result, the 43 per cent increase will mean residents and farmers living in Etheridge Shire can also expect an increase in their rates.

“These valuations will become effective June 30, however

I encourage landowners who believe they have additional or new evidence which may alter their new valuation to provide this information through the online objections process via www. qld.gov.au/landvaluation or at the address shown at the top of their valuation notice by May 7,

2019,” Mr Bray said.

“Landowners without internet access can get an objection kit that includes a step-by-step guide by phoning 1300 664 217.

“It is important to note that sales of rural land purchased by resource companies for the purpose of mining or other extrac-

tive industries are not used to determine statutory land values of rural land.”

Other local government areas in Far North Queensland which saw a substantial increase to their land valuations was the Cairns Regional Council, with a total value change of 25.1%.

Repeal of TRC development approval AT the February 28 Ordinary Council meeting, Tablelands Regional Councillors resolved to approve a development permit for a material change of use for health care services, function facility, shop, office and food and drink outlet at

“Since the meeting, the applicant has requested that we do not issue a decision notice as they wish to remove any doubt about the previous pub-

lic notification process that was undertaken over the Christmas and New Year period,” TRC Chief Executive Justin Commons said.

“The applicant has committed to going back to restart public notification to ensure

that any person who wants to make submission can do so.

“As a result, we will take steps at our March 28 Ordinary Meeting to repeal the February 28 resolution approving the development.

“We believe they were addressed by the imposition of reasonable and relevant conditions,” he said.

“We will be required to assess all issues based on the submissions received during the new public notification period.

Locals gather for World Day of Prayer St George’s Anglican Church in Mareeba played host to the World Day of Prayer recently. The WDOP is an is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative which is celebrated in more than 170 countries.

MEMBERS of the region’s Christian community gathered at the St George Anglican Church on Friday, March 1 for the World Day of Prayer.

The international movement brings together women of many traditions to observe a common day of prayer each year, and is celebrated in more than 170 countries throughout the world.

The host nation for this year’s World Day of Prayer was Slovenia, whose motto was ‘Come – Everything Is Ready’, which aims to enable people of faith to come together to praise, thank and proclaim the kingdom of love.

Prayer event was a resounding success according to the St George Anglican Church’s Warden Allison Hodgon.

“It was a fantastic and joyous morning, and although we were confident of getting a strong crowd, having 55 people attend the World Day of Prayer in Mareeba exceeded expectations,” she said.

“I was most pleased with the numbers.”

Ms Hodgon said all Baptist, Uniting, Catholic and Anglican Churches came together as part of the event, and she noted that the day plays an enormous role in acting as a support mechanism for women across the region.

Ms Hodgon took time to thank those who contributed to the World Day of Prayer’s success in Mareeba.

“Firstly I would like to recognise Pastor Murray Lawrence of the Mareeba Baptist Church, he was instrumental in helping me set up and organise the event, and I couldn’t have done it without him,” she said.

“And I want to also thank the community; their support for this has been and continues to be second to none.”

Next year’s World Day of Prayer event in Mareeba will be held at the Mareeba Baptist Church.

Strengthening Pacific Labour Mobility in the FNQ region Ms Payne said this scheme provides people of Papua New Guinea the chance to gain the necessary skills and return remittance for the betterment of their communities at home.

“We know the capability the people from Papua New Guinea possess - now it’s just about developing the program and growing the numbers,” she said.

“We want to encourage more people to be a part of the Pacific

Labour Mobility Program and help them make a real difference.

“The potential is enormous.”

Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Rimbink Pato largely echoed Ms Payne’s sentiments, noting the significance of a healthy alliance between Papua New Guinea and Australia.

“It’s a very important opportunity to reflect on the friend-

ship that Papua New Guinea enjoys with the Government and people of Australia,” he said.

“We work together to network both in the Pacific and globally, particularly in the areas of labour and mobility.”

“That has become a huge focus of Papua New Guinea’s and Australia’s partnership, and we’re confident it will be mutually beneficial moving forward.”

THE Lions Club of Malanda hosted the Queensland Zone 2 Final for the Lions Youth of the Year at the Malanda RSL on Saturday night.

Competitors representing five different local clubs came together to compete for the title of overall winner, and the opportunity to advance to the next level of the competition – the District Final, to be held in Townsville on Saturday March 23, 2019.

Participating Lions Clubs were, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Atherton and Mareeba and the Lioness Club of Yungaburra.

The contestants included – for Malanda Kynan Gobius from Malanda State High School, for Millaa Millaa, Jem Chapman from Malanda State High School, for Atherton, Jonah Williams from St. Stephen’s Catholic College, for Mareeba, Gamuchirai Makoti from Mareeba State High School and for Yungaburra, Kasey Delben from Malanda State High School.

In the morning, the students met with the three local judges Chris Fahey (Chair of Judges), Phil Slocombe and Amanda Albon for private interviews where students were scored on initiatives taken at school, activities and involvement outside of the school, academic achievements, general knowledge and presentation.

Students could obtain up to 70 points from the interview process. Students returned to the Malanda RSL for the public speaking event held in the evening. The public speaking

event was presided over by Kath Scully, Q2 Zone Chair, and Master of Ceremonies. At this event students were asked to respond to two unknown impromptu questions: Following the impromptu speeches, each student presented a five minute prepared speech.

The public speaking portion of the Lions Youth of the Year accounts for a total of 30 points.

The winner of the Public Speaking Award – the student who received the highest number of points for the public speaking component – was Kasey Delben, representing the Yungaburra Lionesses. Her prepared speech titled, “A Love Lost?” was about the English language and the power and beauty of writing letters to others.

The Overall Winner – the student who received the highest total score – was Mareeba’s Gamuchirai Makoti. Her prepared speech titled, “I’m an addict.” which was a humorous and smart overview of her addiction to social media.

Gamuchirai is only in grade 11 this year, which means she also will have the opportunity to participate again in 2020. It is also the fourth year in a row that the Mareeba club winner has represented the Tablelands Zone at the District final.

With Gamuchirai now advancing on to the next level of the Lions Youth of the Year competition, the Tablelands community wishes her luck on her quest to be named Australia’s Lions Youth of the Year.

Mareeba Water Main upgrade complete MAREEBA’S Water Main Upgrade Project is now complete, securing the town’s water supply for a growing community.

While there were some unexpected delays caused by weather and unknown services requiring emergent works, Mayor Tom Gilmore said the project delivery had been first class. “It’s a major piece of work and the team at FGF have been done an outstanding job dealing with some unexpected delays while keeping the disruption to a minimum, ” he said.

“We thank business owners, residents, motorists and the community at large for their cooperation and patience while this critical project was being carried out.”

The existing pipeline which has been in place for many years was replaced along with essential ageing service connections.

“Not only was the existing pipeline struggling to meet current demand, but due to the fact it is reaching the end of its life and may fracture which would cause serious property damage and disruption to businesses in Mareeba’s main street,” Cr Gilmore said.

The $2.5 million Mareeba CBD Water Trunk Main Upgrade is a joint initiative of Mareeba Shire Council and

the Queensland Government funded through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said he was pleased the Queensland Government was able to assist with the essential infrastructure upgrade.

“Water security is vital for every Queensland community and I congratulate the Mareeba Shire Council for delivering this important infrastructure,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Not only has water supply been secured, the upgrade also caters for future growth and demand.

“The Queensland Government is proud to have contributed almost $1.5 million towards this project through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.”

Cr Gilmore thanked the Queensland Government for recognising this project as a priority.

“This project is an absolute necessity to safeguard essential services for the continued growth of the town,” Cr Gilmore said.

“It is vital that ageing infrastructure is replaced to avoid potential catastrophe and projects of great scale such as this would simply not be possible without support from the State Government.”

Locals call for Bushy Creek Bridge fix

Residents from Mount Molloy, Julatten and surrounds are outraged with the quality of the Bushy Creek Bridge and they are vehemently calling for it to be upgraded.

“FRANKLY it is dangerous and substandard.” That is the opinion of Julatten resident Gordon Rasmussen as it pertains to the Bushy Creek Bridge.

It was an opinion which garnered enormous support at a community meeting in Mount Molloy less than a fortnight ago, with a number of displeased residents noting that they are fed up with the bridge’s poor quality and susceptibility to flooding.

“Bushy Creek poses issues of flooding every time we get 50 or 60mm of rain, as there is a sandbank blocking the stream,” Mr Rasmussen said.

“Because of that coupled with the bridge’s lack of elevation off the ground, roughly 85% of the

flow of water is blocked.

“So a large portion of the water will be blocked, and some will flow underneath the bridge and deposit its sediment on the downstream side of the bridge.”

Mr Rasmussen said the flooding presents a number of inconveniences for the region.

“Whether it is people trying to get to and from work, kids trying to go to school in Mareeba or tourists driving past, them not being able to get through because of a substandard bridge negatively impacts the region’s residents and economy,” he said.

“That causeway has been like that for as long as I can remember, and it’s disgusting that nothing has been done to improve it.”

Mr Rasmussen said poor political representation is to blame for the lack of action being taken on upgrading the bridge.

“Our Member for Cook Cynthia Lui is a pawn in the State Government, and we’ll never get the necessary funding for this electorate while it remains that way; Cynthia has no pull,” he said.

“The fact that this has been such an issue for as long as it has is indicative of the lack of care the State Government has for this region, and highlights that there is something intrinsically wrong happening in Queensland.”

“This is a third world electorate in a first world state, and that needs to change.”

Local Mareeba avocado grower focusing on soil health looks set for a bumper avocado crop The Jennings family of Slape Road, Mareeba is set for a bumper crop of Shepard Avocados this season, with picking recently underway.

Marketing produce under the name of Aussie Green and Gold, the Jennings have been local food producers for 96 years.

“The trees are currently looking superb and the fruit is filling well,” Mr Jennings reports.

This season John and Lucy Jennings have been working with Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Intensive Agricultural Officer Sally Fields, and have focused on increasing calcium and boron inputs, monthly leaf testing to guide nutritional inputs and using soil microbiology.

As one of eight farms participating in the Northern Gulf’s Healthy Farming Futures program for 2018/2019, as a member of the NQ NRM alliance, John and Lucy are focusing on ways to build their farm’s soil health, increase stable carbon levels in their soil, utilise practices to raise the soil organic matter and decrease their on-farm soil losses through erosion.

These practices will ensure the farm’s soil is in good shape for future generations of the Jennings family to continue their legacy.

Federal funding bonanza for FNQ SEVEN Projects across Far North Queensland have been given the greenlight under Round 3 of the federal government’s highly successful Building Better Regions Fund.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the federal government’s $8.5 million investment across seven projects* will help grow local economies and build a strong future for our region.

He said the seven projects would also boost employment across the region, particularly in Cape York.

“These seven projects will be game-changers for their respective communities and are a great outcome for our region,” Mr Entsch said.

“This is about listening, acting and delivering for these communities.

“It is projects such as these that make our region an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

“I am excited to see the positive difference these projects will make to each community.”

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott welcomed the funding and said Cooktown had become a regional service and supply hub for Southern Cape York.

“The BBR grant of $1.7m to help with the expansion of Cooktown Airport will encourage growth in jobs and business development opportunities with existing opera-

tors, Daintree Air and Hinterland Aviation,” Cr Scott said.

“The internal road realignment and upgrade will allow us to make additional airside land available and create new business and specialist jobs in aircraft maintenance, tourism and pilot training.

“Warren Entsch successfully brought the Prime Minister to Cooktown to emphasize the suitability and potential of aviation development in regional/remote Queensland.”

“The Federal Government has also reinforced its commitment to Cooktown 2020 by providing funding for the main stage facility – which will be the centerpiece for celebrations and activities over the 48 day event in JuneAugust 2020.”

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Coalition Government is committed to ensuring Australia’s regions remain strong, resilient and prosperous in the long term.

Bees vital to our food sources

With reference to Grahame West’s letter in The Express (6/2/19). I have noticed the same decline in honeybee activity here in Walkamin in recent years.

European Union countries have banned the outdoor use of insecticides known as neonicotinoids because of the devastating impact they have on honeybee populations yet our APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. Those chemicals, Bayer’s imidacloprid, Takeda’s clothianidin and Syngenta’s thiamethoxam are still registered and used in agriculture in Australia, as far as I am aware.

It is quite possible that those chemicals are also having an adverse effect on our native bee populations.

Apparently our relevant Government agencies have given up trying to eradicate the Asian Honeybee that were introduced to North Queensland a number of years ago.

They are also supposed to pose a threat to the European bees and are vectors of the Varroa mite. Another introduced pest is the small hive beetle.

As Grahame suggests,

more should be done to protect our pollinators before it is too late. Without them most of our food sources cannot survive.

Response on Wind farm

Thanks go to the The Express for the informative wind factory article (27/2/19); good solid facts help us make useful decisions.

Information from the electricity market tells us each of the 53 windmills at Mt Emerald will generate $1m per year profit for its foreign operator.

That’s $53 million dollars going straight from local electricity consumers to a foreign company via subsidy arrangements without passing through the Australian taxation system.

In some circles it is argued that this arrangement is legally nebulous and subject to challenge; that is, if we ever have a government with the guts to stand up to the UN’s mandates.

Of the expected $53m profit from locals, $200,000 – 0.38 per cent – is going to a local community fund to spin up some good local publicity.

Can they spare it?

According to Ratch*, their

wind factory has a nameplate generation capacity of 180,450 kilowatts.

On a perfect wind day with all the windmills functional it can produce 4,330,800 kilowatt-hours of electricity – enough for 236,656 homes using Ratch’s 18.3 kilowatthour per day household 18.3 kilowatt-hours per day is a small household. According to Ergon it’s a bill-conscious two-person household.

A family with kids will use 25 to 30 kilowatt-hours per day.

Notice that Ratch told The Express “75,000 to 90,000 homes”? This is because sometimes the wind doesn’t blow and the windmills just won’t produce any electricity.

On calm days the wind factory will power no homes, even though the typical household wants and needs their 25 kilowatt-hours per day.

We are completely reliant on coal and hydro for reliable electricity. New coal and new hydro, however, are both blocked by windmill-loving greenies. Meanwhile, our population continues to soar.

In the first 193 days of this wind factory’s life it produced an average 777,202 kilowatthours per day, enough to power 42,470 (small) households.

That is, it could have powered 42,470 (small) house-

holds if that electricity could have been delivered steadily and reliably. But it cannot do that.

Should the wind factory produce at the same rate for the rest of its first year it will have produced 283,678,730 kilowatt-hours of electricity – about half its target.

Or it may exceed its target – it depends entirely on the weather. Who in their right mind can think this is the way to power a modern economy?

As with all scams, follow the money and you’ll find the perpetrators. It’s just a shame that our politicians are too stupid, too scared or too treacherous to face this reality.

Kuranda Range Road disgrace

The Kuranda Range road is a disgrace that has held back economic growth for the Tablelands for decades. The state government reduced our rail network to third world conditions and expects Cairns garbage trucks to keep using the dangerous range road.

I read Dan McCarthy and Roy Lavis idea to build two lanes up and down on the present alignment.

Great idea and the cost will be kept to a minimum if they

keep the state government and Roadtek out of the equation. The Peninsula Road upgrade has cost $240 million to date and a bureaucrat friend said nearly 50% of this was taken up in administration fees.

That’s how Minister Bailey got to $750 million or more they would charge. Its simple really. Deduct half and you get close to the real cost.

I have been travelling the range for four decades and there is no environmental value in black wattle regrowth and I have never heard of any indigenous person claiming cultural heritage values. Get rid of the Greens and Labour and let the federal government fund the road.

Go for it Dan and push to get the national highway all the way to Weipa.

Make the time to read books

Whilst emptying my bottles and plastic at the rubbish dump, I noticed a pile of books placed on the side of the tip. On closer examination, they were a complete set of Encyclopaedia Britannica. I could have cried.

This set of books, that once graced pride of place in

someone’s home, has been thrown out as rubbish.

I admit that all that information can be found on the Internet, but what of future generations who will lose the pleasure of holding a book in their hand, and reading.

I am reminded of the saying ‘make time to read, as reading maketh a full person.

Life saving adrenaline rush

CONTROLLING a car in a sideways drift, on a dirt surface, is a whole lot of fun, and may one day save you life.

Tableland Competition Car Club (TCCC), gives the ordi-

nary, everyday person, a chance to learn car control skills and get an adrenaline rush at the same time.

In 2019 the club’s priority will be to offer an affordable form of

motor racing that families and individuals can get involved in.

Participants can choose a competitive group that matches the driver’s skill level, from beginner, through development, to

experienced racers.

This year TCCC is floating the idea of a “Not So Serious Racer” (NSSR) group, for racers who just want to have fun, without points or trophies.

The first 2019 racing at the Herberton Tepon Motor Raceway will be this Sunday March 17, starting at 10am – come along for a day of action and fun in Herberton.

Gladiators to be tested in first preseason game

English halfback Joshua Ward is hoping to bring some of his semi-professional experience when he dons the Gladiator green this season.

DAVIES Park will play host to the Mareeba Gladiators first preseason game this weekend as they take on long-time rivals the Atherton Roosters.

The A-Grade outfit will be looking to further build on the team chemistry they have formed since starting training in January, and club stalwart Tom Hughes is confident they are heading in the right direction.

“Preseason has been extremely tough, however it has been enormously beneficial for the players,” he said.

“We’re hitting our peak fitness levels at the right time and hopefully that will be evident in our performances moving forward.”

Hughes, who has been a member of the Gladiators A-Grade

squad for the better part of eight years, alluded to the culture shift he has noticed at the club.

“Over the years, the culture hasn’t necessarily been the strongest here, so it’s great to see improvements in that area,” he said.

“We’ve got a few fresh faces at the club with the likes of Trent Barnard and some of the English players who have come over, and I think the experience they’ve brought has contributed to the great camaraderie we’ve developed as a group.”

Hughes said this weekend’s trial will act a measuring stick for the side, particularly for some of the younger players who will be tasting A-Grade rugby league for the first time in their career.

Hotdogs show out on grand final day THE best futsal players in the Far North were on display recently as the Futsal FNQ Super League held their grand finals.

Tablelands club the FNQ Hotdogs were the ones to watch as they were boasting five grand finalist teams, of which included the U10s, U12s, U14s and the U16s outfits, the last of whom also played in the men’s final.

The grand finals provided mixed results, as the U10s and

“Added to that, it will be our coach Terry’s first time he will have seen a lot of our squad play, so it will give him a greater understanding of where we stand as a collective unit.”

Hughes said he is looking forward to the year ahead, and he hopes his experience can act as a beneficiary to the team.

“First and foremost I have to ensure I am delivering on the paddock,” he said.

“However I also want to be a leader for this team, not in the captain sense, but more so as part of a senior leadership group.”

Hughes’ comments on the change in culture were echoed by another long-serving Gladiator Keripo Gutchen-Gela.

“Everyone’s definitely putting in this year and showing up for each other, and hopefully we’ll be able to take that determination we’ve displayed at training and translate that into our performance on game day,” he said.

“Our first game against the Roosters will provide us with a great test, however we’re looking forward to that challenge and it’s going to help us find our feet as we prepare for the upcoming regular season.”

THE Mareeba Gladiators has welcomed to the club another former Leigh Centurion as they acquired halfback Joshua Ward.

Ward is the second former Centurions player to join the club, after fellow Englishman Eze Harper committed earlier this year.

Ward, who has only been in Australia for two weeks, isn’t sure on what to expect when he runs out for his first preseason game this weekend in a Tablelands derby against the Atherton Roosters.

“I don’t exactly know what the standard will be like over here, however I’m guessing it will be a bit of a step up,” he said.

“I get the impression that the game is quite physical in Australia, so it’ll be important that I adapt to those differences from back home and hopefully I’ll be

able to fit into the system and do my part in assisting the team succeed.

“I consider my strengths as a halfback to be my ability to organise, so I’ll personally be looking to implement a structure which keeps us competitive every game.”

Ward said another challenging adjustment will be the change in weather conditions.

“It’s a fair bit warmer over here, so I’ll need to acclimatise to the weather, and this tough preseason we’re currently going through will be critical is helping me do just that,” he said.

“Ultimately however, I am just looking forward to playing footy again.

“We have a great bunch of blokes here and I can’t wait to get out on the paddock with them.”

IT proved to be a tough first round of preseason for the Atherton Roosters as they recorded losses in the women’s, Reserve Grade and A-Grade fixtures against Ivanhoes over the weekend.

The women’s outfit went down 16-0, while the Reserve Grade and A-Grade games were a closer affair as they were beaten 10-8 and 16-10 respectively.

Atherton Rooster A-Grade coach Graham Clark Snr said he wasn’t too disappointed with his team’s loss.

“The game over the weekend was more about giving the young players and fringe players a run to get a better understanding of the kind of depth we have as a side,” he said.

“Our defence was really good however we had issues with our ball control, so we’ll be looking to improve on that this weekend against Mareeba.”

Clark Snr said his greatest focus is on shoring up the little areas of the game.

“It’s not about the big picture yet – I just wanted to give the boys a blow-out and I was happy with their conditioning,” he said.

“We had two front rowers who played nearly 70 minutes and a couple of 17 year olds who really stood up, so there are plenty of positives to take out of our first preseason game.”

Clark Snr said he would also like to congratulate the Reserve Grade and women’s outfits for their performances on Saturday.

“I want to commend their effort,” he said.
