The face behind the great race ONE of the region’s most popular events is back for yet another year with the Great Wheelbarrow Race officially launched in Dimbulah on Saturday.

The launch coincided with the naming of this year’s Face of the Race, with that title being awarded to Sandy Butler for his extensive work behind the scences in helping organise the event every year since its inception.

Mr Butler said being named Face of the Race was a huge honour.

“To be recognised for my efforts and involvement in the Great Wheelbarrow Race really means a lot,” he said.

“The idea was initially about helping the Tablelands and outback communities, and to see how much it has grown over the years is really pleasing to see.”

Mr Butler extended his thanks to those who have played an integral role in the event’s success over its 16 year existence.

“Firstly I would like to thank Mareeba Shire Council for taking this event on board each year and supporting it – they do a brilliant job,” he said.

“And in particular I also want to recognise Mick Borzi, he started the Great Wheelbarrow Race and it wouldn’t be here without him.”

Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown spoke glowingly about Mr Butler’s commitment to the continued success of the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

“Sandy has been working behind the scenes every year and we thought this would be a great way to honour him,” he said.

“Preparations are going really well for this year’s race thus far, and Sandy is once again a big reason for that.”

Cr Brown alluded to the numerous economic benefits the annual race provides, and was quick to heap praise on those who lend a hand to support the initiative each year.

“For some of the smaller towns along the race, this event provides them with one of their biggest nights of the year,” he said.

“And none of that can happen without the Mareeba Shire Council and the generous sponsors who come on board each year to finance it.”

This year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race will take place on May 17-19.

The event will kick off in Mareeba with a parade down Byrnes Street, with the official start to be on Vaughan Street.

This year will see the addition of a trio category, to go along with the usual solo, duo and team categories.

In addition to race sponsorship opportunites, new this year is the chance for businesses to sponsor a category, with those interested asked to contact Natasha Srhoj on 0401 344 899.

With only 12 spots available for category sponsorships, it’s a great chance for local businesses to be a part of the storied race.

Nominations open on February 1, 2019 and will be available on the race website – www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com. Regular updates will also be posted on the Facebook page ahead of the May event.

Dam good news WIDESPREAD rainfall across the region over the Australia Day long weekend saw Tinaroo Dam levels reach 91.4 per cent capacity (as of print deadline on Monday, January 28).

Petition put forward for divisional council A petition is being put forward to the Mareeba Shire Council to ensure greater representation of councillors throughout the Mareeba Shire.

Kuranda resident Jax Bergersen is the principal petitioner and is appealing to Council to apply to the Local Government Minister for the Shire to be divided into electoral divisions in time for the next Council elections in March 2020.

“This will allow for all areas across the Shire to have a representative on the Mareeba Shire Council,” Ms Bergersen said.

“My particular aim is for the Kuranda region to have its own

councillor as it remains without direct representation by members of the Council even though it has a population in excess of 3,000 people.”

Ms Bergersen said in the undivided shire, all councillors come from the Mareeba region because it has the largest population.

“In such a large shire, it is an unreasonable and unworkable situation to expect Mareebabased councillors to adequately service all corners of the shire given the size of the shire and diversity of issues needing addressing,” she said.

“The Kuranda region, de-

spite being the Shire’s second largest centre and punching above its weight in contributing to Council’s revenue, is disadvantaged by an inability to compete with the higher voter numbers from the Mareeba district.

“Even if every person in Kuranda voted for the same candidate, it cannot get one elected. Like many areas in the shire, only if it was an electoral division, could it have its own councillor.”

Ms Bergersen said with the next Queensland local government elections scheduled to be held in March next year; a pos-

“I understand where the people who are in favour of a divisional council are coming from but there are definitely pros and cons to both alternatives, that is divided or undivided,” he said.

“However Councillors of the currently undivided Mareeba Shire Council are very diligent at ensuring they are being equitable and work hard at ensuring they are accessible to all residents irrespective of where they live in the Shire.”

Mr Franks said if Council was to be approached at this stage by some community members requesting that Divi-

sibility exists for the Minister to recommend to the Local Government Change Commission that the Mareeba Shire once again become divided for electoral purposes.

“The Electoral Commission has notified councils in Queensland that it needs to know by March, 2019 if there are to be any boundary changes for the 2020 elections,” she said.

“All areas of the shire need to act immediately if they wish to see electoral divisions.”

Mareeba Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Franks said there are no plans in place to return to a divisional

Originally from Vancouver in Canada, Mr Orr said becoming an Australia citizen makes home feel more like home.

“I came to Australia about six years ago as my wife is from here, and I was instantly made to feel welcome,” he said.

“I love this country as it is very similar to that of Canada, there is equal opportunity for everyone and the sense of happiness and optimism that Australian people share make it a wonderful place to live.”

As far as specifically the Mareeba Shire is concerned, Mr Orr said it is a great community to be a part of.

Dimbulah stalwart named citizen of the year

DOZENS converged on the Mareeba International Club on Friday night to recognise those who have made a significant contribution to the Mareeba Shire community as the Australia Day

Awards were held.

There were a number of awards handed out at the ceremony, however the most prestigious honour of the night was awarded to Dimbulah local Eddie

Toffanello as he took home the Citizen of the Year Award.

Mr Toffanello was recognised for his extensive community service efforts and honest leadership, characteristics that have garnered a deep admiration and respect from his peers in Dimbulah.

Mr Toffanello’s work in the community most notably includes his commitment to the Dimbulah Lions Club.

Joining in 1992, Mr Toffanello has served in a variety of roles including President, Secretary and Treasurer, and in doing so helped establish the Dimbulah Lions Club as one of the most respected not-for-profit-organisations in the Mareeba Shire.

Added to that, Mr Toffanello understood the integral role sport plays in a community, as he was a member of the Dimbulah Soccer Club Committee to go along with his involvement with many of the other local sporting clubs in the town.

Mr Toffanello said he is deeply honoured to be recognised as Mareeba Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year.

“This is overwhelming – the award means a lot and it only enhances my desire to dig my heels in even further and continue to work towards bettering the Dimbulah community,” he said.

“It wasn’t something I expected; there were so many worthy candidates that could’ve won and I would like to congratulate them for being nominated as well as thank them for their fantastic work in their communities.

“I traditionally don’t have a big smile when I have my photo taken, however tonight I had a grin from ear to ear because I am just that proud.”

Mr Toffanello’s volunteering efforts speak for themselves, yet he was quick to extend gratitude to those he considers special in his life who have been by his side throughout.

“I would like to thank my wife and my four daughters,” he said.

“They appreciate what I do in the community and are always giving me a pat on the back, and their recognition honestly means a lot.”

Mr Toffanello also noted that

he would like to dearly thank the person who nominated him and recognised him as a worthy recipient of this award.

Mr Toffanello said he hopes his award win will encourage those in the Mareeba Shire to help support the Dimbulah community.

“I am a little concerned with the changes that are going on in Dimbulah at the moment,” he said.

“There are shops closing

down and there seems to be some spirit lacking within the community.

“It is time for residents in Dimbulah and in the surrounding areas to ensure we are working towards building a better future for the community.”

The Mareeba Shire has a reputation for being welcoming, generous and caring, and Dimbulah’s Eddie Toffanello is a fantastic embodiment of that.

Theakston awarded junior citizen There haven’t been too many examples of continued excellence greater than that of Joshua Theakston.

Joshua, who will leave for Brisbane this year to study at the University of Queensland, added yet another award to his seemingly never ending list of achievements on Friday night as he received Mareeba Shire Council’s Junior Citizen of the Year Award.

Joshua was recognised for his academic and sporting achievements, exemplary leadership and community outreach efforts.

Some of his accomplishments include being named Dux of Mareeba State High School in 2016 and 2017 and Senior Dux in 2018, receiving the Order of Australia Association Senior Student Citizenship Award, and be-

ing nominated by MSHS for this year’s TJ Ryan Memorial Medal.

Added to that, Joshua has regularly been active in the community in the form of volunteerism – having participated in initiates such as helping organise a Shave for Cure fundraiser for the Indie Rose Foundation, taking part in the Great Wheelbarrow Race to help raise funds for the Queensland Cancer Council, and coaching at the Mareeba Swimming Club.

Joshua said being named Junior Citizen of the Year is a huge honour.

“It’s really nice to be acknowledged for my efforts throughout the year,” he said.

“I have really enjoyed everything I’ve been able to do over the past couple of years, and this

award is just another little added bonus.”

Joshua said the calibre of nominees was exceptional, which he believes indicates a bright future for that of the Mareeba Shire.

“There’s so many wonderful people in this region who offer so many positive things, and it was great to see them also acknowledged,” he said.

Joshua alluded to the impact his former high school has had on his life in recent years.

“I want to take this chance to thank Mareeba State High School, they’ve provided me with so many opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and they’re a big reason behind this award,” he said.

Coen Indigenous advocate Maureen Liddy was announced as Cook Shire’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year at this morning’s awards ceremony.

The event, held at Nature’s PowerHouse, was attended by a crowd of about 100 despite wet weather and flooding across the region.

Ms Liddy, who was unable to attend due to flooding, was described as a “tireless worker, change facilitator and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Coen and across Cape York” in her nomi-

nation. Ms Liddy, who is a team leader at the Apunipima Coen Well-Being Centre, is a major support and volunteer for the annual Conquer the Corrugations Mental Health Awareness walk and won the people’s choice “Spirit of the Walk” award in 2018 for her determination to walk the entire 42km event.

Ms Liddy is also a driver of the Coen Palliative Care project, a leader at the Coen Women’s Support Centre and has previously worked as a Family Responsibilities Commissioner and educator, including as Deputy

Also recognised at the ceremony was Young Citizen of the Year Dylan Gilmore, who is an active member of the Cooktown Junior Rugby League Club, first as a player and now as a coach and role model for younger players.

The Sports Award went to the Cooktown Junior Rugby League Club, Volunteer of the Year was Marilyn Morris, the Arts and Culture Award went to the Cooktown Historical Society and

Councillor Alan Wilson, who was instrumental in bringing in the Container Refund Scheme in Queensland, was the Environment Award recipient.

During the event, locals welcomed new citizens Laura Armstrong and Emma Jackson, who have both been Cook Shire residents for a number of years, and heard from guest speaker Tasman Bain.

The crowd also enjoyed a free morning tea and celebrated the Centenary of Cook Shire Council, which fell on January 16, 2019.

Cooktown’s 2020 Festival will be boosted by $5.45 million for local infrastructure from the Federal Government, announced

by Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Cooktown last Tuesday.

The funding will support the development of a place of pilgrimage and reflection at the Reconciliation Rocks precinct on Adelaide Street, implementation of the Botanic Gardens Master Plan, upgrades to the Gamaay Dreaming Track and development of the Boathouse on Charlotte Street into a cultural centre.

“This funding and these projects are incredibly important to the success of the Cooktown

2020 Festival,” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said.

“They will create employment and be an attraction in their own right, however to showcase them at the 2020 Festival, we are lobbying the State Government to follow the lead of their Federal counterparts with funding.”

The Festival, proposed to include seven weeks of events in 2020, will commemorate the 250th anniversary of James Cook’s 48 day stay on Cooktown’s Endeavour River in 1770.

“It is not a celebration of colonisation, or European arrival, but a commemoration of a pivotal time in our shared history,”

Cr Scott said.

“Cook’s stay here included the first recorded act of meaningful reconciliation between the Traditional Owners and Cook’s men, as well as significant scientific discoveries. Through the Cooktown 2020 Festival we want to not only commemorate our history, but also showcase our region as a national leader for reconciliation and multiculturalism.”

In addition to the 2020 Festival funding, the Prime Minister announced $6.7 million for a circumnavigation of the country by the replica HMB Endeavour, including a stop in Cooktown.

Growers calls for review of natural disaster relief funding The region’s peak horticultural body has called for a review of natural disaster relief funding to help deliver more timely assistance.

FNQ Growers is lobbying the Queensland Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries to streamline the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Chair Joe Moro said the issue stemmed from damage to individual farming properties, where a region or area was not activated for NDRRA assistance.

The group is proposing a $5000 grant be made available to individual properties immediately after a natural disaster, to help growers reinstate lost farm income as soon as practicable.

“Under the current guidelines, individual property owners not in a NDRRA declared area are able to apply for Individual Disaster Stricken Property declaration if their properties have suffered significant damage from a natural disaster,” Mr Moro said.

“In recent times, there have been several cases where individual properties have received damage during natural disasters, including flooding at Emerald Creek in March 2018, hail at Mutchilba and Dimbulah in early 2017, and Atherton and Kaban, November 2018, flooding and fire at Walkamin, November 2018.

“These events caused significant damage to crops and property including sheds and water

infrastructure.”

Mr Moro said FNQ Growers appreciated the funding assistance that was made available to growers affected by natural disasters, but would like to see the timeliness of the response made more immediate.

“We understand that there needs to be an appropriate assessment to determine eligibility for funding assistance, however, we believe there is room to streamline the timeliness of the response immediately following a natural disaster such as flooding, hail and fire, which may impact on individual properties not within a declared NDRRA activation,” Mr Moro said.

“Often in the case of natural disasters, repair or reinstatement

Construction opportunity on the Tablelands Far North Queensland’s construction industry will have an opportunity to learn about potential involvement in the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment project at an upcoming industry information session.

Trades and construction industry professionals are welcome to attend the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment industry briefing on Tuesday, 5 February.

“The purpose of the briefing is to inform potential local suppliers and contractors about the redevelopment project and expected opportunities,” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) Director Major

Capital John Mayo said.

“The briefing will provide an overview of the project and the achievements that the Health service expects to be delivered through the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment,” Mr Mayo said.

“This will give local suppliers and contractors, in general terms, an idea of the nature of works on site that will be required.”

Mr Mayo said he welcomed the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) and the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP) sup-

port for the project.

“TRC and ATCC are planning to run professional development workshops with a presentation from DSDMIP to help local businesses have the best chance of competing for work on the project,” he said.

Freemasons support for local apprentices THE key to any community’s prosperity is its willingness to invest in its youth, and that is a trait the Granite Lodge Mareeba Freemasons exemplify in spades.

That generosity was demonstrated as the organisation recently presented three apprentices with grants to the tune of $500.

LM Engineering’s William Brown, Angelo Tatti Transmax Mechanical’s Marc Micieli and Rod Hickling Savannah Steel Fabrications’ Joshua Mealing received their grants courtesy of the Granite Masonic Lodge Apprentice Grant, of which will include a further $500 at the completion of the second year of their apprenticeship.

William Brown said the grant was extremely helpful.

“The grant allowed me to purchase important things for my job such as fuel and tools, and I wouldn’t have been able to afford them without the grant, so for that I am very thankful,” he said.

“I would definitely encourage apprentices to apply for this particular grant - it has been one of the most helpful things I’ve received so far throughout my apprenticeship.”

The Granite Lodge Mareeba Freemasons are now extending the opportunity for 2019 first year apprentices as applications are now open.

Celebrating 50 years with Education QLD

Mareeba State Primary School Teacher librarian Liz Crunkhorn is celebrating 50 years with Education Queensland in 2019.

2019 marks an historic milestone for one of Mareeba State School’s most well-respected educators as Liz Crunkhorn celebrates 50 years with Education Queensland.

Mrs Crunkhorn began her career with Education Queensland as a bonded student for two years before being appointed as a teacher at Geebung State School in Brisbane.

After more than a decade in South-East Queensland, Mrs Crunkhorn made her way to Mareeba State School in 1983 where she applied her trade as a classroom teacher until returning again to the role of teacher librarian in 1988.

Having now been a teacher at Mareeba State School for 37 years, Mrs Crunkhorn described the significant impact the school has had on her distinguished career as well as her life.

“Our school is so supportive of both its staff and students,” she said.

“There are great relationships developed within the school and this helps to achieve great opportunities for learning.

“The school ensures there’s always a team approach, and that includes everyone from the teacher, teacher aides, ancillary staff, the groundsman and so on.

“That’s because we’re all committed to the same thing, and that’s to improve educational outcomes of our students.”

Mrs Crunkhorn said Mareeba State School does a wonderful

job at engaging with the community.

“I believe the relationships the school builds with parents, carers and students are the successful foundations with which the school stands on,” she said.

“I think that is reflected in the community’s attitude towards employees of Mareeba State School, as we so often receive positive feedback and that’s a testament to the personnel and environment of the school.”

Mrs Crunkhorn said her time with Mareeba State School has been such an enjoyable one as the school has provided great variation throughout her time as an employee.

“I have interchanged between being a classroom teacher and teacher librarian multiple times, which has been challenging but very rewarding,” she said.

“My passion has always been teaching literacy and in the teacher librarian role I work with students across all year levels to develop literacy skills and promote a love of reading.

“Added to that, I have been in other roles that focus on curriculum and IT, and that professional flexibility is something that I’ve really appreciated.”

Mrs Crunkhorn said her inspiration to teach was one borne out of her desire to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps.

“I came into teaching as a response to my grandfather having been a principal,” she said.

“I held him in great esteem

as a person and a professional, as I was able to see the way he interacted with children and the positive impact he had on them.

“He told me stories about the difference you can make as an educator if it’s something you are passionate about.

“And it has been that and more - every profession has its up and downs; however when I look back on my time as an educator, it has been the most rewarding career.”

Seeing colleagues come and go would be a common occurrence for any employee who has worked in a particular industry for five decades, yet there was one colleague who left a lasting impression on Mrs Crunkhorn’s career.

“Mareeba State School’s former Deputy Principal Laurel Leinster was the most supportive colleague I have ever worked with,” she said.

“Not only was she a great colleague, but she was a mentor to me, particularly in working with curriculum and developing literacy initiatives.

“I would like to thank her for her mentorship and everything she did for me throughout my career.”

Mareeba is a community that appreciates members of the public who make a lasting contribution, and Mrs Crunkhorn’s work in this town, particularly with its youth, speaks for itself.

Wetlands fed up with trespassers FOREVER Wild have vowed to start clamping down on those who illegally step foot on the Mareeba Tropical Wetlands Reserve after several incidences of trespassing has been reported in recent months.

Forever Wild’s CEO Fiachra Kearney said the organisation is trying to promote the reserve and maintain its wilderness values.

“Having people illegally pig hunting and four-wheel-driving across the reserve is having a very negative impact,” he said.

“It completely destroys the

ambience and the whole effect of bringing international tourists out onto the reserve.

“Having international tourists coming to Mareeba is good for the town, the reserve and the community as a whole, and we don’t want to see that jeopardised due to the actions of a few.”

Mr Kearney said the business has a number of cameras operational around the reserve as well as an on-site caretaker to thwart any would-be trespassers.

“We are unsure whether the incidences we’ve seen thus far

are different or repeat offenders, but that’s something we’re looking into,” he said.

“Nevertheless, if we find people on the reserve illegally, we will prosecute.”

The assurances made by Mr Kearney to prosecute was reinforced on Friday as a man was charged with trespassing in Mareeba Magistrates Court and ordered to pay a $2000 fine.

“This result is really pleasing as it sends a strong message that we will hold you accountable if you are to trespass,” he said.

Christmas is well and truly behind us with the Club looking forward to a busy year of providing for the community. The first event of the year is a free Seniors lunch for the over 65’s at the Leagues Club.

Mareeba Lions have been assisting Tolga Lions with their canteen at the Tolga markets, and also assisting with the Speewah car boot sales.

The club met for the first time at the Speewah Tavern and received a very interesting update on the Mt Emerald Wind Farm from Ms Forde.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Mareeba Lions Club. To celebrate the club is holding a dinner

at the Mareeba Leagues club on the 19th March.

Any former members of the club are encouraged to come along and rekindle old friendships.

And a heads up to all who enjoy the fun and fresh air that is the Metrogaine, this event will be held again this year on Sunday June 16.

SES members respond to many different types of situations, locally and nationally, including cyclones, storms, floods, crime

scene/forensic or missing person search/ rescue and transportation incidents (road/rail/air). Additional to these response roles, are the support roles required to ensure successful activations including HQ management, media liaison and community engagement, so there may be something that you could do.

If you have ever considered becoming a Queensland SES volunteer, now is the time.

The next intake for SES Recruits in Atherton will be in the first week of March. Minimum age to join is 16 years of age.

Other groups in the Tablelands Regional Council area are Malanda, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Mount Garnet.

There are no joining fees and volunteers are provided with protective clothing and relevant equipment based on their role.

By joining the SES, you could expect to learn skills like – first aid, map reading and navigation, how to operate a two-way radio, basic rescue, flood boat rescue, emergency operations management, storm damage response, land search technique, leadership and team-building, instructional techniques (training others).

FNQ stung in 2018 with petrol price hikes A new report by the RACQ has revealed north Queensland drivers were slugged up to 16 cents per litre more at the bowser in 2018, than they were the previous year.

The Club’s Annual Fuel Price Report Summary found the average price of unleaded petrol (ULP) in Townsville reached 148.7cpl in 2018, up from 132cpl in 2017, while Cairns drivers, at 149.1cpl, paid 9.1cpl more.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said of the 30 regional Queensland areas monitored by the Club, 25 set new record highs for ULP. “In addition to our major

cities in the far north, inland hubs like Atherton, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba and Tully also hit the mid-dollar-sixties in October,” Ms Ross said.

“Thankfully, since the October highs, we’ve seen global prices fall by more than 30 percent, which has brought some hip pocket relief at the bowser.”

Ms Ross said the Club was pleased average indicative retail margins had dropped in some areas since 2017 – a sign some retailers had passed on savings to motorists.

“In Cairns, we saw retail margins drop significantly,

from 19.4cpl in 2017 down to 13.9cpl last year,” she said.

“Unfortunately, it’s a different story in Townsville where margins actually rose from 11.1cpl in 2017, up to 13.1cpl.

At the Earth’s surface the air is gravity-compressed by the mass of air above it about 10,000kg per square meter at sea level.

Solar heat warms the air,

the surface and particularly the oceans – because visible light penetrates deeply into water.

Weather is driven by stored solar heat, from up to 900 years ago, being released from the oceans.

Surface heat above a threshold level gets sent straight to space by thunderstorms and cyclones – powered by the energy transfer capacity of the phase change of water.

Small amounts of heat are added by volcanic/tectonic activity, bushfires and human activity.

Small amounts of heat are subtracted by photosynthesis converting sunlight to carbohydrates, and by cloud nucleation from galactic cosmic radiation.

The only effect of adding more CO2 is more plant growth, because CO2 is plant food.

If we could double atmospheric CO2 (we can’t, there’s insufficient hydrocarbons to burn) the extra plant growth would cool the world fractionally.

CO2-alarmism is dirty politics with a single objective – de-industrialising Western countries.

If you believe CO2 is “pollution” it’s because you, and/ or your teachers, have been lied to by the cartel that now controls the UN. The UN is no friend to Australia or the Western world.

Nowhere in the town of Mareeba or in any nearby locations – is there one kind person, who would offer their help – for a person in need!

I have a tiny caravan (8 foot) – I must find somewhere to park it, when it is not in use, because I live in a home unit, it cannot stay on the property nor can I leave it in the street.

I had thought before I began my quest, that someone on a town lock, acreage or farm, would have a small space to allow me room, to keep my van safe. I thought also perhaps, in neighbouring communities- Biboorah, Koah or even Walkamin, would be good.

Maybe the spot where a teenagers used to park, before moving away from home – or where an older person (who is no longer driving), had previously parked. Undercover would be ideal, especially in the summer months – but anything in or close to Mareeba, even in the open would be wonderful!

I have also placed notice in other newspapers, on community boards, service clubs and even church groups! No replies.

Is this township and local community so closed – that no help can be offered? My van is less than 2 years old, registers and fully insured, therefore I Do Not seek to have it placed on your policy.

Recently we bought a lovely looking Rock Melon in the Supermarket, it was a little green so I placed it carefully into our fruit bowl, not the fridge so it would ripen... it went rotten within three days, why did this happen, why is it so weak, what a waste of money and we should have known better.

It was obviously lacking in Nutrition, watery with weak cells, lacking in any resilience to disease consequently very poor food that passes on its weakness to those who eat it, causing bad health.

Unfortunately we can’t always get exactly what we need at our Organic shop so we buy from elsewhere and sometimes we are caught out... If the Rock Melon had been Organic and Seaweed grown it would not have rotted because its nutritive density and natural resilience would have kept it fresher longer, it would be sweeter and tastier with good vitamins and minerals for our good health, but I made a foolish choice and admit it openly.

There are more people with diseases like Cancer in these times than ever before and Cancer is on the rise...

‘WHY’ that’s what we must ask ourselves and face the question honestly and openly if we have any chance to lead a healthy and happy life.

It was said on the news just this morning that Blood Cancer is virtually out of control in Australia... but the drugs are getting better... crikey what a legacy to look forward to, yes they are finding new expensive drugs, making big money, more hospitals needed, more doctors and nurses, more laboratories, more and more taxes, it’s endless, endless and we are frankly fed up with those ‘CLEVER’ blinkered people not making the

right decisions.

Even I can see that the problem is a basic lack of proper nutrition plus the trace amounts of toxic chemicals in our food building up in our body that is THE PREOBLEM but no one is interested in the truth...YES it is possible to have fantastic health and dramatically decrease the incidence of chronic disease on our Planet by growing Nutrient Dense, Unpolluted, Natural food not simply good looking stuff that is without sweetness or taste like we get now.

The present situation is a disgrace and must change, I can see mankind becoming weaker propped up by drugs and synthetics, going down that slippery slide to a dreadful world of our own making.

But guaranteed will push a fear agenda to hide their own inadequacies and factional infighting. How can they ever hope to focus on Kennedy’s

And the cartoon character, popularist federal MP that we have in Bob Katter Jnr, not only is he not listening. He is never in Canberra to push the borrow for his members in North Queensland. He is too busy chasing the limelight in front of a camera to become the next YouTube star. No Bob we do not need a canal to Mt Isa. We do not want to give rifles to our children to fight the scourge of the mightly cane toad. We want a member that is respected, trusted and stops making the best and most important part of Australia the laughing stock of the nation.

We do want a future for our children that is positive, We do want a health and education service in regional areas that is the envy of the world, we do want to expand the markets for our farmers to sell our amazing produce into and We do want to look after the natural wonder of the world, the Great Barrier Reef.

That’s why a Labor representative and government will bring a bright future to Kennedy.

1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until translucent and golden, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the flour.

Hot Dogs win Craig Foster International THE Far North Queensland Hot Dogs put the region on the futsal map after they won the U15s Craig Foster International Cup last weekend.

Held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, the tournament pitted the best young futsal talent from Australia, Oceania and Asia against each other over three days of competition.

The Far North Queensland Hot Dogs won four games and had drawn two on their way to the finals, where they continued their strong form to defeat Gold Coast 6-3 in the semi final and Christchurch 6-1 in the final.

Mareeba local and Hot Dogs coach Ronnie Leporati said he

was thrilled to come away with the win.

“This is the first year we have entered the tournament, and it is different rules than what we’re used to, so to be able to go down and come away with the win is fantastic,” he said.

“I was particularly impressed with how the boys played in the finals, they performed at their best when it counted most and that’s all a coach can ask for.”

Leporati said the camaraderie amongst the players was a big reason behind their success.

“They have played together for four or five years, so they have an understanding of how each other plays and that showed

right throughout the tournament,” he said.

“I knew we had the talent to win but it was just ensuring we put everything together at the right time, and we were able to achieve that.”

Leporati said the standard was quite high, and noted that his side wasn’t taken too seriously when they first arrived at the tournament.

“We were thought of as a bit of a gimmick when we first arrived because of our team name,” he said.

“However because of how we played, we earned the respect of all the teams by the end of the tournament.”

CHAMPIONS: The Hot Dogs team from FNQ were named champions of the U15s Craig Foster International Cup last week on the Gold Coast.

Free Tennis day for the public Tennis has introduced a myriad of different programs that aim to provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in the sport.

opening their doors to the community encouraging everyone to pick up a racquet, have a hit and participate in the inclusive sport of tennis.

Karla is a competitive ski racer who has been participating in the discipline for more than eight years, and her performance has quickly garnered the attention of those within the sport as she consistently excels on the regional, state and national levels.

petitive ski racer, most notably of which includes achieving first place in the Junior Girls category in Catalina, USA last year; doing so in rough conditions which consisted of 100 kilometres of ocean racing.

Added to that, Karla came first in the U16s Sydney Bridge to Bridge.

Karla took time to thank those who have played an integral role in her young career.

“I would like to thank my

mum and dad for all of the time they put into me and my training, as well as the Tablelands community for their help,” she said.

Karla said she hopes to add to her stellar last few years as she has set a goal of qualifying for Worlds in Vichy, France in September.

Australia Day award for rising sports star

SPORTS STAR: Mareeba’s Declan Wason was awarded the Mareeba Shire Junior Sports Award on Friday night.

ONE of Mareeba’s most promising young athletes was recognised for his commitment to sporting excellence at the Mareeba Shire Council’s Australia Day Awards on Friday night as he was received the Junior Sports Award.

Declan Wason, 17, has a long list of accomplishments in the sport of athletics at the local, state and national levels, most notably of which includes placing third in the country for long jump at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships.

Declan said winning the Junior Sports Award was a special achievement.

“I really want to get recognised in the sport of athletics,” he said.

“This award is proof that hard work does pay off, and it is all the more special as I have had to battle injury recently.

“It’s not easy being an athlete, but I’m lucky to have the help of my family and community to ensure I keep on track and stay motivated.”

Declan will ramp up training over the next couple of months in preparation for the Australian

Athletics Champions in Sydney, where he will attempt to qualify for the World Junior Championships for long jump.

“Preparations are going well so far, it’s just about getting my body back to full health and going from there,” he said.

Declan said he would like to thank Mareeba State High School, his family and in particular his father for the abundance of support they have provided him throughout his young yet distinguished athletics career.

“Firstly I would like to thank MSHS, they would always let me use the facilities to allow me to improve,” he said.

“Most importantly I would like to thank my entire family for the support they have given me, they are always pushing me and I really appreciate that.

“I definitely want to recognise my dad, he has become like my coach and been by my side the entire way.”

With aspirations to one day compete at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, Declan’s maturity, exceptional work ethic and desire to succeed places him in good stead to do so.

RACING returns to the Mareeba Turf Club this Saturday with the first race day of 2019 set to delight racegoers.

After heavy rain saw the Boxing Day races called off last year, the club secured an early race meet and they hope see a strong crowd on hand to enjoy all that a country race day has to offer.

Preparations are well and truly on the homestretch with only days to go to the first race day of the year.

Off track the focus will be on the Fashions on the Field. Held after the second race of the day there are categories for all ages from kids and teens to ladies and gents – all with fabulous prizes up for grabs. Live entertainment will also feature during the afternoon with local band Careless performing, plus the Human Horse Race will be held on track after the last race.

For the more serious punters, attention will be on the track from 1pm with the five race thoroughbred program.
