Graham Fox recognised by QFES for creating safer communities MAREEBA Shire Council’s Graham Fox was recognised with an award by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) at last week’s council meeting.

The award went to Mr Fox for “Going above and beyond and actively collaborating with QFES personnel to implement preventative bushfire strategies in order to provide a safer community within the Mareeba Shire”.

QFES Chief Superintendent

Adam Gwin presented Mr Fox’s Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Assistant Commissioner John Bolger who was unable to attend, and Mr Gwin noted the strong relationship his department and the Mareeba Shire Council share.

“QFES is very much aligned with local government to ensure that our customers the wonderful people of this region get the service they deserve,” he said.

“Providing this service is a big

road to walk on our own, so to have the help and partnership of councils like the Mareeba Shire and Graham Fox is crucial and something we really enjoy.”

Mr Gwin also noted that he would like to thank Inspector Shane Jareis, Station Officer Jason Mathers and Management Coordinator Nadine Oosen.

“It would be remiss of me not to mention, Shane, Jason and Nadine, our department covers a very large span that goes

from Cardwell up to Papua New Guinea and down the west coast, so without these three people we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” he said.

“Also, these three people were the ones who brought to my attention the wonderful work Graham has done so for that I am thankful.”

Graham Fox displayed humility when accepting his Certificate of Appreciation.

“I wasn’t expecting this to be

honest, but it’s something I enjoy doing – it’s good to deal with good people,” he said.

“I also enjoy working for the rate-payers, which ultimately was my aim when I became involved.

“And hopefully our work will continue to benefit the rate-payers of the Mareeba Shire.”

Graham Fox’s commitment in conjunction with QFES to protect the communities of the Mareeba Shire is something to be commended.

Mothers push for tougher penalities

Janice Bradley, whose son Scott was hit and killed outside of Mossman in 2016, launched a petition to achieve harsher penalties for perpetrators who leave the scene of an accident and fail to help an injured person. Her petition garnered the support of fellow mothers Rachael Bowden and Katrina Whiteley, whose sons Michael Bowden and Harley Amos were also killed in a similar incident. The petition has gained significant momentum since it began, and it is one that is supported by Barron River MP Craig Crawford.

Scott Bradley was tragically killed just hours after celebrating his 24th birthday in Mossman.

At 4:30am on Saturday, September 3, 2016, Scott was found on the road after he had been walking down Junction Road on his way to Cooya Beach, to look after his mate’s dogs.

The perpetrator in Scott’s case lost his licence for just 12 months and received three and six months jail respectively for two separate offences, both of which were fully suspended for 18 months.

Scott’s mother Janice said her and her family miss Scott every day.

“Words cannot accurately describe how our world has been turned upside down,” she said.

“It has been extremely hard on all of us, not only did we suffer the injustice of losing Scotty, but also the injustice of watching the perpetrator walk free from court.”

Ms Bradley said Scott was loved by everyone who met him.

“He would have everyone in stitches with his great sense of humour,” she said.

“Scotty was a very loyal friend, who would give you his last dollar if you needed it – he

was called a gentle giant by one of his mates.”

Ms Bradley said it was not until it happened to her that she realised how out-dated and weak the current Queensland laws are.

“It is a maximum penalty of three years in Queensland, whereas it is 10 years in Victoria and 20 years in Western Australia,” she said.

“If the perpetrator runs, they don’t get punished appropriately.

“This is why we are getting a new law enforced, if you run, you will automatically be charged with High Range DUI - hopefully this will make the driver stay and assist the injured.

“There will be no justice for the loss of our sons, but at least by changing the laws, it will make it safer for the community in the future.”

Michael Bowden, 20, was in Weipa for an annual fishing competition when he was hit and killed whilst walking home from a party in the early hours of the morning.

The driver of the vehicle was charged with driving with undue care and attention, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, showing callous disregard, and driving on a restricted licence, (i.e. not licensed to drive at certain hours of the day).

It is estimated Michael was not found or responded to for 30 minutes post incident.

Michael’s mother Rachael Bowden described Michael as a kind, funny, quirky and happy go lucky person who loved life and was great with family and kids.

“He loved his family and adored his brothers and sister, they were best friends and their bonds were only getting stronger,” she said.

“He was the champion for the underdog, stood up for people and never let differences get in the road of knowing someone.

“Everyone remembers his forever smiling face, he was just a beautiful soul taken from us well before he was meant to

through the most horrific of circumstances.”

Ms Bowden describes the current Queensland laws pertaining to hit and runs as hopeless, absolutely appalling, weak, disgraceful, pathetic and disrespectful to the value of human life.

“The consequences are greater if you commit fraud or punch a person, harm an animal, or steal something,” she said.

“The laws need to support the victims because the villains thrive in our current weak and diluted system with its weak and soft justice.

“We can never get someone back when they are killed but we can at least make the consequences for the perpetrators real enough to make them stop and consider their actions prior to getting behind the wheel drunk, on drugs, with no licence or in a stolen car – whatever it may be.”

Harley Amos, who had just turned 18, was at a party and left to what his mother Katrina Whiteley believes was to get phone reception.

Just before the incident, Harley had sent Katrina a text message saying he loved her.

“It is a message I will treasure forever,” she said.

“We were very close.”

Harley was hit by a backpacker who was driving home from a party nearby.

The perpetrator fled the scene in a panic as he had been drinking.

The perpetrator pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months jail time.

Ms Whiteley said the laws are out-dated and noted her shock when hearing the little sentence, if any, perpetrators get.

“Maybe it was an accident at first but when you leave someone to die with no assistance and no help it then changes to murder in my opinion,” she said.

Ms Whiteley said Harley was a very outgoing, caring, loving and adventurous young man that loved the outdoors.

“He would fish nearly every day down the Barron or go pig hunting with his mates, and he

had just purchased a Ute which he brought home and showed his sister, grandparents and myself he was so proud,” she said.

“He had so much to look forward to and was so happy; he was in the prime of his time.

“We miss him terribly, it has changed my life and his sister’s life so much, our hearts are broken.

“We miss the cheeky grin and I miss my cuddles that he used to give out.

“Cherish your mates he would always say after losing some of his in tragic circumstances earlier in the year.

“Don’t drink and drive and please watch out for your friends, I don’t want any families to go through what my family has been through.”

RADF grants announced

MAREEBA Shire Council has announced the successful applicants of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) community grant round for 2019-20.

Eleven projects will be funded under the RADF strategy to support art, heritage and cultural projects across the Shire.

Chair of the RADF Advisory committee Councillor Angela Toppin congratulated the following successful applicants.

Youth Link Kuranda – Youth Cre8 Pride Music Productions.

Youth Link Kuranda will implement a musical school holiday program to engage at-risk young people in Kuranda.

Caroline Lieber – Arts in the Park Community Mural, Mareeba. Local artist Caroline Lieber will complete a mosaic art work that incorporates panels created by the community at the 2018 Mareeba Arts in the Park.

Mt Molloy State School – Growing our Community – Sculptural Installations. Mt Molloy State School students, community members and local

ceramist will create three large, mixed media sculptural installations depicting the school’s kitchen garden program, local history and local environment.

Centre for Australasian Theatre – #SUP? Performance Lab (Julatten). The Centre for Australasian Theatre will deliver theatre workshops for young people to explore and build awareness of their life and future.

Kuranda ArtsCo-operative – Artist Promotional Videos. A series of video vignettes will be produced featuring 16 Kuranda artists discussing and demonstrating their artistic techniques.

Mareeba Military Muster Organising Group – Mareeba Military Muster. In 2019 the Mareeba Military Muster will feature additional and unique military vehicles and equipment.

Gecko Productions – Kurandascope II. Kurandascope II will document the development of Kuranda through the stories of long-term residents.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Igloo Movie Night hits Tolga TABLELAND residents will have the opportunity to get their movie fix this Saturday as Atherton Rotary is hosting their ‘Igloo movie night’.

The movie night will be held at the Rocky Creek WWII Igloo in Tolga and will include a double feature, one of which depicts World War I and the other depict-

ing World War II. The night will kick off at 6:30pm with a screening of Beneath Hill 60.

There will then be a 15 minute intermission from 8:30-8:45 before the start of the second film The Bridge over the River Kwai.

For those interested in attending, the event is $10 per person.

There are chairs available; however they are not cinema chairs so attendees are encouraged to bring their own.

There will be complimentary tea, coffee and an ANZAC biscuit on the night, along with popcorn and snacks which will be available for purchase.

Residents become Australian citizens THREE Tableland residents can now officially call Australia home after they received their Australian citizenship last week.

David Theobald, Gerhard Warendorf and Harinder Randhawa made their Pledge of commitment, and in doing so signified their loyalty to Australia and their acceptance of the responsibility and privileges that come with being an Australian citizen.

David Theobald, who now resides in Kuranda, is originally from Lincolnshire in the United

Kingdom and has lived in Australia for the past five years.

“We moved here to join our only daughter, and as we were planning on making Australia our home this was something we planned to do from the beginning,” Mr Theobald said.

“And here I live with my wife, daughter and Loki our German Rottweiler as a very happy family unit.”

Mr Theobald noted what makes Australia and the Tablelands such a desirable place to live.

“I love the people, weather and the cultural diversity – I feel now Australia is my home,” he said.

“And we originally came from a rural area and Kuranda and the Tablelands is similar, as it has open spaces but with a unique environment that we love.”

These three gentlemen are yet another embodiment of the cultural diversity the Tablelands boast and the enormous role they play in our communities.

Rugby league legend – special guest at Field Days

Calls for State to match funding MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is calling on the State Government to match the Federal Government’s budget commitment to assist in eradicating yellow crazy ants.

Yellow crazy ants are on the list of 100 of the world’s worst invasive species and pose significant threats to the region’s economy and ecosystem.

When they swarm in great numbers, they have the capacity to kill much larger animals such as lizards, frogs, small mammals and bird chicks.

In addition, they can dramatically reduce the productivity of crops such as fruit trees and sugarcane, of which the

Tablelands economy is heavily reliant upon.

The Federal Government’s commitment is $9.2 million over three years for the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, and MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore alluded to the urgency required at ensuring this biosecurity threat is swiftly managed on the Tablelands.

“We have dealt with yellow crazy ants at Russett Park on the north side of the Barron River for a number of years,” he said.

“These ants are not to be messed with, so we’ve asked the State Government if they’ll be kind enough to recognise the danger of this species and match the funding.”

Cr Gilmore said if they’re able to get rid of anything invasive of that nature relatively early in the piece, it’s incumbent to do so.

“Mareeba Shire Council has been cooperating with this process for quite some time, with eradication methods including baiting and burning ant colonies,” he said.

“And I think it’s worthy for us to write to the State Government and outline that we’re getting somewhere with these pests and that we’d like to continue our efforts.”

“Once you’ve got some momentum and begin getting somewhere, there’s no point backing off – we did that myna birds, rab-

bits and all sorts of weeds we introduced to this country, and we can’t afford to do that in this day and age.

“So we’ll be seeking that funding from the State Government on behalf of the community at large.”

Mareeba business survey finds tourism matters

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said the results of the survey confirmed that the tourism industry made a valuable contribution to the economic prosperity of Mareeba.

AN overwhelming number of Mareeba businesses believe tourism contributes positively to their bottom line, a business feedback survey has found.

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce surveyed businesses earlier this year to quantify the value of tourism.

Chamber president Joe Moro said the results, while not surprising, confirmed that the tourism industry made a valuable contribution to the economic prosperity of Mareeba.

“The chamber has acknowledged for some time the value of tourism, however, for businesses that are not traditionally tourism focussed, it can be difficult to appreciate the contribution visitors and travellers make to Mareeba, and the flow on effect of that,” Mr Moro said.

Three-quarters of respondents believed that travellers and visitors contributed to the profitability of their businesses, with nearly half of responses showing that visitors spent up to $249 in their businesses.

Respondents said the selfdrive and recreational vehicle markets made up most of the tourist numbers, with backpackers a close third.

Mr Moro said the survey results found more than 80 per cent of respondents believed more could be done to attract travellers and visitors to Mareeba.

“The comments provided varied from more investments in promotional activities including billboards, television advertising and social media, to improving customer service,” he said.

Mr Moro said sealed roads,

including those that the chamber has put forward to Mareeba Shire Council for continued maintenance and improvement, was also nominated in the feedback provided.

These roads include Shanty Creek Road, Davies Creek Road, Emeralds Falls Road, Ootan Road and the Burke Developmental Road.

Mr Moro said the chamber would survey Grey Nomad visitors during their peak visiting period mid-year to gain a better understanding of what attracts them to Mareeba.

“We will then have a clearer picture on what direction the chamber needs to take to promote Mareeba to ensure we deliver the services and attractions that keep visitors in our region, and increase the dollar spend,” he said.

The wonderful life of Laurie

On Wednesday Mareeba said goodbye to Laurence (Laurie) Tracona. Former Student and friend, Angela Toppin looked back at the extraordinary life of one of Mareeba‘s most fascinating teachers, a man who touched the lives of countless generations of students who attended Mareeba State High school.

IT is my honour to speak to you about Laurie Tracona, the multitalented educator and teacher.

I first met Laurie and his family when I was about 6 years of age. My parents were very friendly with the Tracona family and would on occasion visit their homes.

As children, we always enjoyed a visit to the Tracona family. Mrs Tracona was a wonderful cook and produced beautiful cakes and fizzy drinks called spiders.

Laurie later became my Geography teacher at Mareeba State High School. He had initially trained as a primary teacher in Brisbane, but later returned to university to re-train as a secondary teacher specialising in Geography and English.

I was fortunate and privileged to have Laurie as my Geography teacher in years 9 and 10.

He prepared his lessons to perfection, ensuring that the content was well researched and presented to students in a very engaging manner.

I still remember, to this day, his map drawing. In those early days this was a technical drawing skill mastered by very few.

In today’s classroom it has been taken over by technology, but back in the 60’s Laurie would meticulously draw maps of a country on the blackboard from memory. He would then proceed to use coloured chalk to indicate major mountain ranges

and rivers. I was full of admiration for such an amazing talent.

Laurie was always available to assist students if they needed help to master their studies.

His attention to detail when marking students scripts is still a highlight of my learning.

Laurie literally spent hours marking students work and then proceeded to give positive and constructive feedback on how to improve.

He took tremendous pride in his lessons, and always prepared beautiful resources to assist with learning in the classroom Laurie introduced the study of speech and drama and theatre at Mareeba State High school.

Following a training course in Brisbane, Laurie became the first qualified drama teacher in Queensland and implemented these programs while reinvented himself as a performing arts teacher.

Not only did he teach these subjects but he was instrumental in organising concerts and musicals with students and staff for the community to enjoy.

Shortly after this, Laurie also became the audio-visual co-ordinator, and was responsible for all AV equipment in the school.

Again, his records and procedures were absolutely meticulous. Whilst theatre was Laurie’s passion, he was also a very competitive sportsman – playing both cricket and tennis in his youth.

State High school in 1994 and cared for his ageing mother until her death in 2008.

His devotion and love for his mother was truly commendable.

Whilst Laurie retired formally from teaching in 1994, he always prided himself on the fact that he never took a sick day in his entire working career.

After retirement, Laurie continued his great passion with the theatre, whilst learning new skills in computer technology, which he used to desktop, publish many programs for community groups and his church.

Laurie always challenged himself to learn more and do more.

Laurie continued to support Mareeba State High School, and all the musicals and drama productions.

He never missed a school show, helped behind the scenes and always enjoyed being a VIP guest. Laurie was always generous and kind in his praise of young people and emerging performers.

I would like to share a quote by henry Adams – A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence ends.

Thank you, Laurie, for your commitment and dedication.

You have influenced the lives of many young people over generations, and your legacy will live on.

May you rest in peace.

A devoted community man, theatre was Laurie’s passion in life and as Mareeba Theatre Group gave a final bow, Ida Portella remembered cherished moments of their friend and mentor.

Mentor, teacher, friend, director and Paul Harris fellow Laurie Tracona was the epitome of a devoted thespian, a true gentleman, kind and caring and the heart and soul of the Mareeba Theatre Group.

For Laurie the theatre was the greatest of all art forms, it was his passion and he was currently directing his play for 2019.

If only back in the late 60’s Mareeba repertory society, as it was known then, knew how lucky they would be the day Laurie Tracona joined the society. He was a dedicated and devoted member who was involved in all aspects of the thea-

tre.

Over the years, the Repertory society evolved and grew to what it is today The Mareeba Theatre Group.

Laurie played a big part in this; he embraced the change and growth and continued his involvement in every possible way.

Laurie never ever quit and regardless of the circumstances he continued to drive us all to ensure we would bring live theatre to Mareeba audiences As a director he brought the stage to life being able to direct all of his favourite plays, musicals pantomimes, theatre restaurants, Shakespeare, American

and English comedy.

When it came to acting on stage, the more over the top it was the more Laurie loved it.

He was also a perfectionist when it came to the delivery of lines often he would make you repeat a line literally hundreds of times before you got it to how he wanted it to be and he often changed the scripts.

Laurie was the king of lights – taking on the role of lighting director for all of our productions and other community events such as carols in park, as well as his very own shows.

Laurie’s last show at Mareeba Theatre Group was at the end of 2018 and he was able to use

the latest computerised lighting.

Not once did he complain about trying anything new, in fact he loved it and commented at the time how wonderful and easy the new technology was – once we got it to work.

We will never forget Laurie’s contributions to the Mareeba Theatre Group and to this community and we will always remember and celebrate his life.

Vale Laurie Tracona. May you continue to light up heaven like you have lit up our lives.

It is our honour to give you our final bow as we close your final curtain.

Cost of living out of control

How cynical can governments get? For three years leading up to an election we hear nothing and get nothing but a few crumbs if we are lucky. When an election is announced, we are showered with confetti containing billions of dollars of promises. Where is all this money which wasn’t there during the term of government coming from?

Prime Minister Morrison keeps telling us his government are the better economic managers, if so, how come our net debt has more than doubled to over $350 billion. Labour left us with an horrific debt of $174.5 billion when it left office in 2013. Does that make the LNP debt now worse than crippling?

Under this government the price of electricity has risen sharply in recent years and indications are that prices will continue to increase.

Prices for households have increased an average of 72%.

The surprising fact is that the cost of poles and wires are responsible for a massive 53% of your bill while the cost of environmental policies are

only 8% of the average bill.

So much for renewables being the culprit. Over capitalisation on net work upgrades which were of questionable value has largely been the cause.

No politician, whether LNP or Labour, dare mention the astronomical cost of fuel these days. The government collects both excise and GST on fuel, so it in fact double dipping, little wonder no political party mentions fuel. Why do we pay such a high price when We have our own oil and in fact export it. WA currently produces 71% of Australia’s crude oil. Australia is believed to have reserves of 3.9 billion barrels of crude oil. We have oil and gas reserves in the Northern Territory, S.A., inland QLD, Bass Strait, offshore W.A, and the Timor Sea. With some production in onshore W.A. and N.S.W. we in the North have the added burden of even higher energy prices due to no competition and horrendous insurance prices which our local politicians seem to be able to do little about.

Fact is Australians are struggling to adjust to the greatest fall in living standards since the 1990’s. Wage rises have been non existent for 5 years and the cost of living is rapidly spiralling out of control.

So much for a bright future.

Get the job done

Once again there is madness at the Court of Queen Palaszczuk and Court Jester Trad. A $5.4 billion project to save commuters 8 to 15 minutes off their travel time.

I would have thought that removing the toll charges from Brisbane’s roads would have been a cheaper and easier way of relieving congestion.

In addition, the Palaszczuk Pantomime has failed to meet a final deadline for the long planned Emu Swamp Dam which would provide a long term storage resource for farmers. It seems that Jester Tad blocked the economic development on irrational environmental grounds.

Let’s add to the above with the unbelievable delay of building the bypass for the Kuranda Range Road. A procrastination of 19 years.

Is 15 minutes of a Brisbane’s commuter’s travel time more important than the livelihood of farmers and the well-being and prosperity of the population of the Tablelands? Is North Queenland less important?

In the film ‘Field of Dreams” the owner said about the baseball park he built “build it and they will come”. That should be the motto for the Tablelands for roads, power and communication – so let’s just do it.

Taking the lead

A REPORT tabled at Mareeba Shire Council’s meeting last week indicated residents are taking the lead when it comes to pet ownership.

The number of animals impounded, and infringement notices issued has dropped significantly compared to this time last year.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was pleasing to see residents doing the right thing.

“Council takes responsible pet ownership seriously and it is very reassuring indeed to see residents are complying with the regulations and duties of owning a dog,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Council has made the reg-

istration fee for a de-sexed dog just $20 for the year to encourage residents to do the right thing and register their dogs.

“A reminder that by law, all dogs in Queensland must be registered. Dogs must remain on a lead when outside their secure environment and not be wandering at large.”

Throughout the engagement process actions have been identified and successful partnerships established, including Mind Pod Tablelands Youth, for future collaborations.

The draft Tablelands Youth Strategic Plan 2019 – 2024 outlines six priorities and actions to focus on over the next five years – youth participation and development, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth participation, active social connection, pathways to independence, youth health and wellbeing and enabling access.

An iconic Australian movie night in support of flood affected Gulf residents is the brain child of the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group.

On Sunday 28th April the Mareeba Drive-In will host this family-friendly event show casing two great Aussie movies, Paper Planes and Red Dog. The aim of the event is to raise funds to help the flood devasted communities of the north west.

It is a time for the families of the Mareeba area to dig deep to help those communities which many of us have a connection to, whether it be through fishing at Karumba or knowing someone who lives or works on the cattle properties in the area.

A barbeque dinner will be prepared by Mareeba Lions and Mareeba CWA with Lotus Glen prime beef being the staple of the barbeque.

Ulysess Coffee Van will be on hand to provide a steady supply of warm brews, with $1 from every cup sold going back to the Flicks for Floods campaign.

The Drive-In canteen will be open to supply confectionery and cold drinks.

Numerous local businesses and groups have stepped up to partner with Northern Gulf for this worthy cause.

Major sponsor Lotus Glen Correctional Centre has donated a cow from its quality herd of beef cattle, breed on site at the Lotus Glen Prison farm.

To get this meat from paddock to plate Chad Posselt Livestock Transports, Rocky Creek Abattoir and Cleall’s Butchery have all been sponsors to make this happen.

Coles Mareeba, Atherton IGA, Mareeba Drive-In and Farmer Meets Foodie have all contrib-

uted to making this event happen. As people learn about this worthy cause we are finding that in true Aussie spirit they are stepping up to say “What can we do to help?”

Proceeds from the evening will be distributed to flood effected communities through the Northern Gulf Public Fund, a charitable fund supporting environmental and social outcomes in the Northern Gulf region.

Discount microchipping day TABLELANDS Regional Council is holding a discounted microchipping day this Saturday, April 27.

From 9am to 12noon, residents can get their dogs and cats microchipped for only $20 each,

LEARNER drivers have told the State’s peak motoring body they hated being yelled at and ridiculed while they learnt to drive prompting calls for instructors to be better behaved.

Data compiled as part of the Club’s Driver IQ program showed more than 80 percent of participants considered yelling was the worst thing supervisors did while instructing them.

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said it was important parents kept their cool, if they chose to get

“Being yelled at isn’t the only behaviour upsetting new drivers. More than 50 percent of participants told us they didn’t like it when the instructor laughed at them,” Ms Hunter said. “What’s really worrying to us is more than 65 percent of these learners said they were bothered by their driving supervisor being on their phone.

“Driving instructors and parents helping learners need to remember they are role models for impressionable

motorists – so, if you’re teaching a young person how to be a safe driver, you shouldn’t be distracted by your mobile phone.”

Ms Hunter reminded instructors and new drivers, learning to be competent behind the wheel, was not just about ticking off a requirement but gaining experience in a range of situations and conditions.

“We know that learning to drive can be a nervewracking experience for all involved, so it’s important that when you’re going out

for a lesson that everyone – including the instructor – is in the right headspace,” she said.

“Make sure, before you both set out for a drive, that neither of you are tired, hungry, angry or distracted nor learn to recognise when it is time to end the lesson.

“If you’re planning on using a road trip these school holidays to clock up some quality hours behind the wheel, make sure you’re taking the appropriate breaks.”

Flat batteries can spark a meltdown

DRIVERS have been urged to check their batteries ahead of the long weekend.

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said 1,400 batteries were replaced over the Easter long weekend last year.

“Last year we replaced hundreds of batteries across Queensland and many of those drivers were away from home,” Ms Hunter said.

“We expect there’ll be plenty drivers in the same boat this Easter, which could it really put a frustrating dampener on their holiday.”

Ms Hunter said drivers planning a long weekend road trip should use the week

ahead to give their cars a once over and make sure all the servicing was up to date.

“If you notice a sluggish start when you turn the key it can be a tell-tale sign your battery is about to pack it in.

Also take care not to leave any lights after switching the engine off,” she said.

“For those batteries older than three years we recommend having your battery tested.”

Golfers impress at Mareeba Open THE Steggles Mareeba Open attracted golfers from across the region with Will Florimo and Lilly Birney being named the 2019 champions.

After two days of golf on April 13 and 14, Will Florimo and Lilly Birney won the open Mens and Ladies divisions, however the winner over the weekend was definitely the course.

A protracted wet season ensured that the fairways were slow and the rough was punishing so much so that only one player broke their handicap for 36 holes over the weekend.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Roosters prepare for top of the table clash THERE’S sure to be a strong crowd on hand at Stan Williams Park this Sunday as it will play host to a top of the table clash between the Atherton Roosters and Cairns Brothers.

Both sides are undefeated and are coming off impressive performances in their most recent hit-out, with the Roosters securing a 14 point win over a previously unblemished Innisfail outfit, while Cairns Brothers romped the Tully Tigers 54-8.

Brothers and the Roosters came into this season as two of the pre-season favourites, and this weekend’s fixture will be a crucial one as it could act as a preview of a potential finals match-up come September.

Atherton Rooster A-Grade coach Graham Clark Snr said the game this Sunday against Cairns Brothers will be a good test for his side.

“Brothers are a very young and enthusiastic side that always have plenty of Northern Pride associated players so they’ll be a very tough match-up,” he said.

“We have had slugfests in our first three rounds of the season in wet conditions, so if the weather permits I’m looking forward to

Gladiators look to build on momentum THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side will be looking to build on their first win of the season against Southern Suburbs last weekend as they host defending premiers the Mossman Sharks at home this Saturday.

The Gladiators’ performance against Suburbs was a much-improved one, as they displayed greater cohesion as a unit on both sides of the ball.

Their confidence is set to grow further leading into this Saturday’s match with the expected return of the ever-reliable Tom Hughes, who missed last weekend’s game due to a shoulder injury he suffered

against Innisfail the week prior.

While their opponents Mossman are yet to win a game this year, it will be anything but an easy task for Mareeba as all three of the reigning premiers’ losses have been tight affairs against formidable opposition.

The Gladiators Reserve Grade side are also coming of their best performance of the season, after they beat Suburbs 22-16.

Reserve Grade coach Cam McPherson said their win was off the back of a fantastic first half.

“I was very happy with

the first half, everything we worked on at training was pretty much text book,” he said.

“In the first half I was particularly impressed with our halves, their kicking game was exceptional.

“We fell into bad habits of not getting to our kick in the second half, so that’s something we’re working on at training in preparation for our next game.”

This Saturday’s fixture schedule: Ladies – 3.30pm, Reserve Grade – 4:30pm, A-Grade – 6pm.

Akaysia earns national selection MAREEBA punches well above its weight on the state’s sporting landscape, and local 13-year-old netball player Akaysia Boyle is further evidence of that after she was recently selected in the Under 14 Australian Indigenous netball team.

Otherwise known as the Budgies, The Australian Indigenous team was selected from the Australian Indigenous Schoolgirls Netball Carnival that was held in Melbourne in January of this year, and it is a team Akaysia said she didn’t expect to make.

“I was really surprised to have made the team,” she said.

“I didn’t think I was going to be picked but I’m so happy that I was.”

Akaysia’s selection means she will travel to the Gold Coast in July to compete at the International Netball Festival on the Gold Coast.

Akaysia noted that not only was it great to make a national side, but that her selection is all the more special as it gives her the chance to represent her heritage.

“I’m so proud to get the opportunity to represent my people,” she said.

“At the same time it is really nerve-wracking, it’s a lot of responsibility to represent my culture so I’m hoping I do well.”

Akaysia also took time to thank those who have contributed to her enormous success she

has had in the junior ranks of the sport.

“First of all I want to thank my mum and dad and the rest of my family, they have been so supportive since I started playing netball three or four years ago,” she said.

“I also want to thank Michelle from Mareeba Netball, she has helped me so much when she’s been my coach and I’ve improved so much because of her.”

Akaysia’s mother Kienwyn Daniels spoke about the excitement and emotion that was felt when they heard of her selection, particularly for Akaysia’s father Ross.

“Her father is extremely proud that she has made the Indigenous team,” she said.

“That’s the highlight from her father’s point of view since she’s started playing netball – he was crying when he found out on the phone.

“He is so happy to see her representing our people and our family.”

Ms Daniels said she wanted to recognise those at Mareeba Netball who have developed Akaysia into the player she is today.
