Mareeba held its first ever Light the Night walk at the weekend. The annual event, held all across Australia, saw people like Rena Perry and Leona Schincariol (pictured) gather to raise their lanterns high in a moving ceremony to pay tribute to those facing their own blood cancer journey and to remember loved ones lost. Each coloured lantern carries a special meaning – Gold to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, white for those diagnosed themselves and blue to show community support for all those affected.

The night also raises funds for vital research to support Australians with blood cancer.

Becci’s Tassie triumph LOCAL country music artist Becci Nethery has added yet another award to her trophy cabinet after she won the 2018 Song of the Year at the Tasmanian Independent Country Music Awards.

Ms Nethery was notified of her win just moments after headlining the FNQ Country Music Festival held in Mareeba recently, and the win caps off a stellar 2018 which includes being named Queensland Female Vocalist and National Female Artist of the Year at Tamworth’s Gold Medallion Media Awards in January.

Ms Nethery’s song, Can’t Just Kiss You, remained a hit on the nation’s country music scene for months, sitting at number one for three weeks and in the top 30 for an impressive 36 weeks on all Tasmanian country music stations.

Added to that, Can’t Just Kiss You achieved number one on the Australian Country Tracks Charts and charted for 22 weeks.

Ms Nethery beat out a number of impressive Australian artists on her way to the award, and said it is an achievement she is extremely proud of.

“I’ve been to this particular awards night before and the constant support is so important and extremely exciting to see,” she

said.

“I wasn’t expecting to come away with the win at all, my most recent album has been out for quite some time now and there has been some fantastic music that has been made since its release, so it definitely came as a surprise.”

Ms Nethery attributes the time and effort she puts into her work as the reason behind her continued success.

“I put a lot of thought into my songs, and Can’t Just Kiss You isn’t any different,” she said.

“I write my songs in the hope that people can relate to them and it’s great to see that this song has been able to do that.

Ms Nethery also noted those who have contributed immensely to her young yet distinguished career.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, they are all musical and are so supportive of everything I do, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them,” she said.

“And to all of my fans, I appreciate your continual support and it just reinforces to me how great country music fans really are.”

Becci will be performing next at the Atherton Folk Festival from Friday, October 26-28.

FOUR students from St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) beat out some of the brightest minds from across Queensland to win at the annual OptiMINDS challenge held at the University of Queensland last Sunday.

SSCC students Mia McNeill, Abigail Garate, Amelia Morris and Lucy Perrett took out the top gong just weeks after winning honours at the regional event held in Cairns.

The students won Division two, which pitted year seven, eight and nine students against each other in spontaneous and long-term challenges in the area of language literature.

SSCC teacher and team facilitator Samantha Schermer said the objective of the challenge was to test the students’ teamwork, problem solving skills and creativity, a test she said they passed with flying colours.

“They did extremely well,” she said.

“They are very creative group of students who have worked together and supported each other throughout this entire process.

“Their success has been built off their back of their own hard work and determination.”

Two of the team members, Abigail Garate and Amelia Morris, were over the moon to come away with the win.

“It means a lot but the best thing was being able to participate and have fun with my friends,” Abigail said.

Teammate Amelia Morris echoed Abigail’s jubilance in winning the state-wide event.

“I think it really showed how well we worked together as a team and winning gave us a lot of confidence in our first year of high school,” she said.

“We can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Abortion legalised after historic vote

Local issues heard in nation’s capital FNQ Growers President Joe Moro was one of more than 50 delegates from Tropical North Queensland who descended upon Parliament House last week for Advance Cairns’ Convoy to Canberra.

The two-day event saw business and community leaders meet with members of parliament to campaign for greater Federal Government funding across a broad range of issues which included road upgrades, tourism and health.

Having recently returned

from his visit, Mr Moro remains optimistic about the future projects poised to propel the region forward.

“It was a great opportunity to put forth a number of issues affecting the region, in particular in relation to a number of important water and road projects,” he said.

“The upgrade of the Kuranda range and the completion of the Hann Highway were major talking points on our end and it’s great that we’re being listened to, however now it’s about action.

“There has been a concerted effort over the last 12 months to ensure our objectives are seen to and our Canberra visit was a great step in that direction.”

Mr Moro said the region’s campaign has gained significant momentum on the Federal level, largely he says is due to the work of key figures in the region’s business and political realm.

“We are being heard through effective lobbying from the likes of Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and Advance Cairns – their work along with

many others has been exceptional,” he said.

“Added to that, we are fortunate that those on the Federal level are well-briefed on the issues relevant to our part of the country, which really aids our discussions.”

Last week’s Cairns Convoy to Canberra is yet another example of the strides our community representatives are making nationally and could prove crucial for future developments in Far North Queensland with a Federal election just around the corner.

LAST week saw one of the biggest legislative reforms in Queensland’s history after the Government passed the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018, a law making abortion legal.

The controversial plan, which will allow women to access termination upon request up to 22 weeks, passed successfully through state parliament with a majority of 50 votes to 41.

Under the previous laws which dated back to the criminal code in 1899, abortion was a criminal offence that attracted a potential jail term of seven years, however was considered legal when preventing serious damage to a woman’s physical or mental health.

The new law raises pertinent questions as to the impact it will have across the state.

“Queensland Hospitals and Health Services will continue to provide a range of public health services that offer women access to contraception and reproductive healthcare, including medical and surgical therapeutic termination of pregnancy,” a Queensland Health spokesperson said.

Despite the historic changing of the law, an uptick in abortion statistics is unexpected.

“The vast majority of terminations in Queensland

abortion

are conducted in the private sector. We do not expect this to change under the new legislation,” the spokesperson said.

“Evidence from other Australian jurisdictions and internationally indicates that the number of terminations is unlikely to increase.”

Given the scarcity of resources women living in rural communities have to contend with when considering abortion, Queensland Hospitals and Health Services have made assurances to actively seek ways to provide the public with the necessary support.

“We know there are access barriers to termination service in Queensland, particularly for women in rural and remote locations,” the spokesperson said.

“We will continue to explore how Hospital and Health Services can work with local providers and partner organisations to address this issue where services are limited.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui praised the reform, saying this legislation will help ensure access to safe services for women across Queensland.

“The legislation provides legal certainty for health workers and ensures women can access the services they require.”

Pell awarded for industry excellence

TAFE Queensland’s Cairns campus acknowledged its next generation of tradesmen and women across Far North Queensland as they hosted their second annual Trade Excellence Awards a fortnight ago.

There were more than 40 nominations across eight categories, and Mareeba local Austin Pell was one of those nominees recognised for their extraordinary work.

Mr Pell, a third year apprentice auto-electrician at Northern Auto Electrical in Mareeba, received the Automotive Apprentice of the Year award.

Mr Pell said although he wasn’t expecting much from the night, he was extremely pleased to come away with the award.

“I didn’t know too much about the awards so I wasn’t really sure what was going to happen,” he said.

“My teachers encouraged me to go but because there were a number of good fourth year apprentices nominated I thought they would get the nod.

“The award came as a bit of a surprise however it still means a lot.”

Mr Pell also took time to thank those who have contributed to his success thus far.

“Firstly I would like to thank my employer Graham from Northern Auto Electrical, he has taught me a lot and has been extremely important for my development throughout my apprenticeship,” he said.

“I would also like to thank my TAFE trainer Adrian Collosi, he’s brilliant at what he does and I’m very appreciative of his help.”

With the region’s Trade Excellence Awards still only in its infancy, Mr Pell believes it is a great initiative by the educational institution that he hopes continues to grow.

“TAFE Queensland and the Cairns campus do a fantastic job for apprentices and the Excellence Awards is an example of that,” he said.

With reputable apprentices like Mr Pell operating in and around Mareeba, the future looks bright for the town’s automotive industry.

“It will also look at optimising our water supply infrastructure to ensure potable water can be provided to the community at the lowest possible whole-of-life cost while meeting both current and future demands.

“Once complete, we’ll have a strong position to support our investment and advocacy efforts to secure State funding for future investment.

“The development of the strategy is being fully funded by a grant from the Queensland Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning’s (DSDMIP’s) Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program.

“In the Ravenshoe area we have started data collection and a review of water infrastruc-

ture for the four water supply schemes — Ravenshoe, Cassowary, Bellview and Millstream.

“DSDMIP’s Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program is also funding this project and DSDMIP have engaged engineering consultants SMEC. “When finalised we will seek funding for the design and construction of the identified solution.

“Ultimately these areas will receive a fully-treated water supply delivered by an optimised supply network, resulting in fewer boil water notices.

“We will also be receiving $2.3 million from DSDMIP through their Building Our Regions Fund towards the $5.1 million upgrade of the Herberton water supply scheme.

“Construction on the new raw water main, 2ML reservoir and full treatment facilities is underway.

“All things going well the new water treatment plant will be completed and commissioned before the end of this financial year and residents on this supply network will see a significant improvement in water reliability and quality,” said Mayor Paronella.

Krista named Rural Woman of the Year WALKAMIN-BASED entrepreneur and food waste pioneer Krista Watkins was nationally recognised in Canberra last week as she was named the 2018 AgriFutures Rural Woman of the Year.

Mrs Watkins, who is the CoFounder of Natural Evolution alongside her husband Robert, took out the top gong for her innovative work in turning green banana waste into flour, a first-of-its-kind practice that is tackling the war on waste.

Natural Evolution provides alternative food and skincare products from their produce that would traditionally be discarded, a method of production Mrs Watkins believes will only become more common.

“This is the way of the future,” she said.

“We are taking produce that has already been produced and creating an alternative market for it.

“Rather than putting more re-

sources into producing more, as a nation we can use what is already being produced and through innovation create sustainable and nutritious opportunities.”

Salvos to the rescue AS the Tablelands grip with a string of devastating bushfires in recent weeks, an act of generosity by non-for-profit organisation Salvation Army is something positive that can be taken out of an otherwise difficult time.

While the region’s fire fighters have been working around the clock to ensure the safety of their residents, volunteers from the Salvation Army have been assisting in any way they can.

Over a period of 21 days, the Salvation Army provided fire fighters with a total of 3800 meals and 1500 snack packs, something the organisation’s Atherton family store manager Miriam Newton-Gentle takes great pride in.

“It was extremely sad to see the devastation of the fires, however it was a fantastic opportunity to serve in the community and it was special to see the spirit amongst both the fire fighters and volunteers,” she said.

“We had numerous volunteers come from far and wide which included people from the Tablelands, Cairns, Innisfail, Townsville, Rockhampton, Carindale and even Sydney.

“We also had the Salvation Army’s Queensland Emergency Services Coordinator Adam Cole come to lend a helping hand which was great.”

Even with the exceptional work done from emergency service crews and volunteers alike, residents in the area are urged to remain cautious as current and upcoming weather conditions still pose a threat.

READY FOR SCHOOL: Preppies of 2019 listen to a story at the teddy bears picnic last week.

Picnic helps get preppies ready for school THE Prep class of 2019 converged on Mareeba State School with a teddy bear in tow last Thursday for the school’s teddy bears picnic.

The children and their parents were treated to a day of fun which included a tour of the school, activities, some reading time for the kids as well as

a picnic courtesy of the school’s tuckshop.

The teddy bears picnic kicked off what will be a seven week program which helps prepare children for their first year of schooling.

“The program provides exposure for our students who are commencing school in 2019,”

Mareeba State School’s Deputy Principal Hannah Simpson said.

“It gives them the opportunity to see our school and engage in some of our school-like activities.”

Mrs Simpson noted that the program is not only beneficial for students starting school next year, with it also acting as

a crucial transitioning tool for parents.

“Part of the program is a parent’s learning session, providing information on what goes into a healthy lunchbox, oral language development, how they can get external agency support plus much more,” she said.

“We are extremely lucky to

have the support of VPG, the school dentist and Mulungu and are very appreciative for all their help.”

The program will run on Thursday’s from 9-10am over the next six weeks.

FNQ Growers sign MOU with Growcom FNQ Growers has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Queensland horticultural industry’s peak body, Growcom.

The MOU strengthens the relationship between the region’s peak representative body for fruit and vegetable producers and those with a stake in the industry, and its state counterpart.

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said the two organisations enjoyed a strong, positive relationship, with the MOU intended to deliver service and support benefits to members of FNQ Growers.

“The MOU recognises FNQ Growers as the peak industry body for horticulture in Far North Queensland and a valued member of the Queensland Horticulture Council,” Mr Moro said.

“We are pleased to be able to formalise our relationship with Growcom which is a strong advocate for the state’s multi million-dollar horticultural industry.

“FNQ Growers works closely with Growcom to represent producers and industry stakeholders on issues affecting horticulture production.

“We look forward to that relationship continuing in the future.

Growcom chief executive officer David Thomson said the organisation looked to a positive working relationship with FNQ Growers and the opportunity to represent the interests of the region’s farming community.

“As the peak representative body for Queensland horticulture Growcom strives for the long-term growth and profitability of horticultural farms and the industry,” Mr Thomson said.

THE Tablelands has the potential to become an international leader in the production of an unlikely source of power, blue agave.

The plant, which has an extensive commercial footprint in Mexico due to it being the base ingredient for tequila, is currently being grown over a trial period near the Tableland Mill, courtesy of milling company MSF Sugar.

With roughly 3,000 blue agave planted late last year on unused land near MSF Sugars’ Tablelands Mill, a further 45,000 are set to be planted as early as next month as part of the company’s biomass refinery project.

The project, which will coincide with their $75 million green energy power plant expansion, aims to turn 100 per cent renewable sugar cane

fibre known as bagasse into green energy.

MSF Sugar hopes blue agave can act as another source of power for the mill, as their current practice of burning bagasse, a by-product of sugar cane crushing, only operates on a seasonal basis.

MSF Sugars’ General Manager of Business Development Hywel Cook said blue agave boasts a number of benefits, of which include it being able to grow in the dry tropics as well grow on land not currently under cultivation.

Added to that, its capacity to produce two types of material; a fermentable sugar and a fibre, as well as its ability to yield 500 tonnes per hectare of biomass every five years (crop cycle) make it a viable option for the company moving forward.

Mr Cook said the planting of blue agave in the region is one that has gone to plan thus far.

“The agave is still at a feasibility stage,” he said.

“To date it has performed as expected but I need to ensure we have a good market for fuel ethanol to support the construction of an ethanol distillery based on sugar cane molasses and agave juice.”

Mr Cook said the concept was developed two years ago when trying to figure out how to extend the operation of the power station, coupled with the state government’s push for greater bio-future ideas.

Despite the substantial steps MSF Sugar is making to ensure blue agave’s success, the harvesting of the trial crop isn’t expected to be ready until 2022.

Atherton artist helps map opportunities to enhance healthcare A new James Cook University (JCU) online initiative, designed to help close the gap, will feature the work of Atherton artist, Sharon Caulfield.

The Aboriginal artist’s vibrant acrylic painting, One with Land, will form the banner for a new web page on JCU’s Generalist Medical Training (GMT) site. The web page will enable doctors undertaking specialist general practitioner training to explore training opportunities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services throughout Queensland.

The web page and original artwork will be unveiled on 17 October at the JCU Atherton Clinical School in Jack Street.

JCU Director of General Practice Training (GMT), Associate Professor Peta-Ann Teague, said the new web information would be a valuable tool in recruiting General Practice (GP) registrars to training posts, where they would have the opportunity to develop both the cultural and clinical expertise required to address specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues.

The training posts are avail-

able within a range of accredited Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, noncommunity controlled Aboriginal health services and Queensland Government health services.

“These training posts are able to equip GP registrars with the skills to contribute to closing the gap in healthcare outcomes,” Dr Teague said.

“The new web page will assist them to take that first step. It includes an interactive map detailing the location of all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training posts, as well as access to videos which feature the personal and professional experiences of GP registrars who are already working in partnership with communities to improve health outcomes.”

Ms Caulfield, a member of the Idinji/Yidinji people, whose ancestral lands encompass Atherton township, said she had painted a tribal shield, using colours of great cultural significance.

“Red represents the blood of Idinji people, past and present, and has meaning in life itself.

Without blood, there is no life.

Life is in the blood,” she said.

“Green is the rainforest, the

dwelling place of the Idinji, a rainforest tribe. The yellow ochre colour is earth. The seven white triangular shapes along the centre line represent the Seven Sisters – volcanoes scattered across the Tablelands and part of the songlines of the Idinji landscape and stories.

“The hands represent family and community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, as we all now dwell together on the traditional lands of the Idinji people.”

Dr Teague paid tribute to the University’s cultural mentors in the Tablelands, who work with GP registrars to develop an understanding of the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the region – and the impact of that history on the delivery of effective healthcare services.

“These mentors help our GP registrars to learn the most appropriate way to relate to patients from different cultural groups.

They enable us to provide healthcare in a culturally safe environment for patients, which optimises the opportunity to achieve the best health outcomes,” she said.

improve road safety

AS ROAD safety remains one of the region’s greatest concerns regarding our youth, the Tablelands Regional Council has partnered with Queensland Police to deliver a Road Safety Program at the Mount Garnet Primary School.

The program, which is funded by a Department of Transport and Main Roads Community Road Safety Grant, focuses on improving the students’ road behaviour.

Division 2 Councillor Annette Haydon said the students ‘learn by doing’ in a controlled environment.

“We set up street signs and teach the children what the signs mean and how to behave,” she said.

“We want to improve their knowledge and road safety behaviour, and make sure they get to and from school without putting anyone else at risk.”

“We’ve received a donation of bikes from an anonymous Topaz resident,” she said.

“These bikes, combined with two scooters purchased with the funding and the kids’ own bikes, mean that everyone is getting a chance to be safe on our roads.”

Knuth questions rejection rate of vehicle compo Shane Knuth MP has used Parliament this week to question the Minister regarding rejected compensation claims for damaged vehicles from incidents at the Millaa Millaa Road through Tarzali, and the Tolga Scrub Road along the Kennedy Highway.

Mr Knuth raised the issue after hearing concerns expressed by the community that their legitimate claims had been knocked back.

“We’ve had quite a number of

people express disappointment they had not received funding,” Mr Knuth said.

“These incidents have been a massive cost to the public and the question I asked the Minister is going to get to the bottom of exactly how many claims there have been for both incidents and exactly how many of those claims have been rejected.

“There are also many people who have experienced minor damage who did not make a

claim due to the lengthy process and they didn’t have faith the application would prove successful.

“It’s not the fault of the road users when the government gives the tenders to companies that are not local who have no understanding of our weather conditions and how quickly it can change – we need to prioritise using local contractors,” Mr Knuth said.

Make a difference in your neighbourhood

HAVING served the community for the better part of 30 years, Neighbourhood Watch Queensland (NHWQ) has established itself as a reputable volunteer organisation helping curb crime.

NHWQ play a pivotal role in linking the community with police and the Northern Tablelands’ Area Coordinator Denis McKinley hopes he can assist in ensuring it can become a point of difference for the town.

“I want to reinforce to the wider community that Neighbourhood Watch really cares about the safety and security of its people, which is why our presence is of such importance,” he said.

“The main objective of my role is helping improve personal safety and household building

security, encouraging the reporting of suspicious activity, ensuring residents’ properties are appropriately marked, and, most importantly, marketing the program to people in the area.”

Mr McKinley, who is a former Chief Inspector for Queensland Fire and Rescue and the current President of the Lions Club of Mareeba, will be replacing Keith Nelson after his five year tenure in the position ended earlier this year.

“Keith did an exceptional job and I can only hope to continue on his great work as we look to move forward over the next five years,” Mr McKinley said.

Mareeba Police’s Senior Constable and Tablelands Crime Prevention Coordinator Aleda Day largely echoed Mr McKin-

ley’s sentiments, alluding to the significance of having NHW on board in the fight against crime.

“We’re not in a position to see and hear everything that’s happening in the community,” she said.

“That’s why NHW is so crucial; we need the community as a whole to band together and report incidents, whether it is domestic violence, suspicious activity such as loitering around residences or anything else they deem crime related.

“Important information provided by the public goes a long way.”

Startup takes aim at world’s biggest trade pest – fruit fly New insect-monitoring technology startup RapidAIM is receiving a $1.25M boost to protect Australia from the world’s biggest biosecurity barrier to trade: the fruit fly, which costs Australia more than $300 million every year.

Founded by researchers from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO Dr Nancy Schellhorn, Darren Moore, and Laura Jones, RapidAIM provides real-time fruit fly detection and monitor-

ing to help Australian producers battle against the devastating pest – and it could revolutionise pest monitoring around the globe.

Main Sequence Ventures, who manage the CSIRO Innovation Fund, is making the $1.25M investment in the startup, which successfully trialled the technology with fruit producers in Victoria last year.

“Growers rely on weather radar and take action accordingly, but until now they haven’t

had any pest ‘radar’ to support them against pests like fruit fly,” RapidAIM co-founder and Chief Executive Dr Nancy Schellhorn said.

“Existing fruit fly monitoring relies solely on manual trap checking, which limits the scale and depth of available information and costs valuable resources.”

The RapidAIM system uses low-powered smart sensors to detect insects like fruit fly from

their characteristic movements.

The sensors, which can be placed by the thousands, send data to the cloud using a radio modulated technique, giving producers real-time data flow of the pest on their farms and regions through a linked mobile app.

Dr Schellhorn said the new technology can reduce crop loss and provide early warnings of future pest hotspots.

“Our new technology can reduce the time spent checking

traps by more than 35 per cent, and provides an immediate picture of fruit fly presence in specific locations to enable a rapid response for control,” she said.

Dr Schellhorn said the technology had huge potential for managing food and fibre pests around the world.

FNQ Growers President Joe Moro said the new technology would be a welcome addition in the fight to combat the fruit fly problem.

“Fruit fly is a problem for every farmer in whatever industry,” said Mr Moro.

“It becomes more prevalent in the summer months and has huge implications for farmers for both domestic and export markets.

“There are numerous chemicals, traps and baits that are used to control the pest but nothing there to really eradicate them completely, any preventative manner is at a huge cost to the farmer.” he said.

riculture and Fisheries (DAF) in Mareeba.

Held at the Georgetown Shire Hall, those in attendance were treated to a formal three course dinner and enjoyed entertainment, as well as the evenings formalities, where there was much accolade given to Joe and Bernie in recognition of their services to

the Northern Cattle Industry, by both local cattle producers and DAF colleagues.

The annual event is held to bring the region’s beef producers and town residents closer together.

Cook Shire Council is turning 100 in January 2019, and as part of the celebrations they want to share images from their 100 years of service.

The Council, formed in 1919, is seeking images from then until now. Images that showcase everything that Council has been involved in, including the towns and communities, facilities such as libraries, pools, playgrounds and halls, staff, road works and community events.

“We have some amazing images in our records, but I’m sure there are some other images out there which may never have been seen by the wider community and we would love to be able to share them during our Centenary celebration,” Cook Shire Mayor

Peter Scott said.

The images will be on display at the 2019 Cook Shire Australia Day Awards and will be included in a coffee table book to be printed next year.

Images can be emailed to Council, or hard copies can be posted or taken to Council and will be scanned and returned.

The Cooktown History Centre on Charlotte Street can also scan hard copy images and pass them on to Council. The History Centre is at 121 Charlotte Street, and is open 9am to 3pm Monday to Saturday.

The ducking and weaving about the Kuranda Range Road continues unabated.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui stated “I will continue to advocate for my electorate etc” (The Express 17/10/18, P3).

It shouldn’t be that hard. Just use some of that $3billion of upgrades she said was going into that road in her election promises (The Express 22/11/17, P7).

Or am I being cynical in thinking it was a whopper without any chance of being truthful and a ploy to get elected?.

To be considering KurWorld at Myola is beyond belief. The record of accidents and road closures on the Kuranda Range can only worsen.

So time for our political friends to get up and do something useful – Is that possible? I think not.

As a forty year resident of Koah, I have driven the Kuranda Range thousands of times. For 40 years we have been hearing about new roads, improving the existing road and tunnelling.

But as we all know, we are still talking about it. And will continue to do so have no fear!

Talk of tunnels goes back to the days of Martin Tenni, the nearest we got to something was the Lake Morris, Davies Creek idea but the Greens made sure that did not happen.

It is really a case of a new road in a new place. To attempt work on the Kuranda Range would result in total chaos! As a matter of interest the lowest part of the range is behind Kewarra Beach where Leonard’s Cane Farm once was located. I have ridden a horse up there to Black Mountain Road,

In 1999, Peter Campion and ‘mates’ lobbied for a new road. It was ignored by the Brisbane government. This is a typical government attitude of failing to view, in the long term, any proposal that would benefit local people, usually with the excuse that it is too expensive.

It is now five years since my wife and I arrived in Australia from London UK to retire to a young, vigorous country, good climate and locally grown fresh food, leaving behind an inept government and a banking system that left a lot to be desired. In that time, anything that State or Federal government initiated has been a costly failure……NBN, newly built hospitals, disability schemes, the census, tanks with rubber wheels, F.35 fighters, and an inability to sort out congested

roads, especially in Queensland who also have inability to run a proper rail service using badly designed rail stock, and so on.

Therefore, I would suggest a different, radical approach. R Buckminster Fuller, an American architect, inventor and visionary said:‘You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete’.

Change has always been brought about by visionary individuals, most recently Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and the Amazon boss, Jeff Bezos. Becoming a billionaire is an indication of success in the commercial world and Australia has many of them.

Therefore, in theory, an approach to these people could be an option so that the road could be built privately without State or Federal government interference. The banks could also chip in and give back some of their profit and bonuses. The building expertise is there and there would be work for local contractors. A win-win situation.

The Tablelands can’t afford to invest in building more houses with more people without the proper transport infrastructure, so this road needs to be built now. Incidentally, if a tsunami hit Cairns, there is no escape route to higher ground.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Gaynor’s podium finish at international comp

TOLGA’S own Jim Gaynor (pictured) had to battle inclement weather conditions on his way to placing third at an international horseback archery competition earlier this month.

Held in Japan, the competition saw some of the best horseback archers from across the globe compete over the day-long event.

Mr Gaynor was one of four Australians competing, three of whom achieved podium finishes.

“It was fantastic to see all the Aussies do so well,” he said.

“For me personally, I have competed in this competition for ten years now and this is the first time I’ve finished in the top three, so it is a great feeling.

“There has been plenty of hard work and training that has gone into improving my performance, particularly over the past few years and it was satisfying to see it pay off.”

Mr Gaynor, who instructs clinics and hosts tournaments at local pony clubs throughout North Queensland, hopes he can build on this year’s success

as numerous respected international events are on the horizon in 2019.

“I have plans to go back to Japan next year and compete again and hopefully I can do even better,” he said.

“There is also a potential tournament scheduled for Poland next year, so it is looking as though 2019 could be a very busy one for me.”

For those interested in getting involved with the sport, they can do so by visiting their local pony club.

they might not have brought home the grand final silverware, but that didn’t stop the Mareeba Bulls from being awarded the most successful club in the region in 2018.

Club President Remo Terranova was on hand to collect the ‘Club Champions Award’ on Saturday night at the FNQ Football presentation night in Cairns. The annual award is

presented to the most successful club in terms of participation in the region.

MUFC had nine teams make it to the grand finals this year – five in the competitive junior divisions and four in the senior divisions.

The accolades then kept coming with Dennis Allen collecting the Premier Men’s Reserve Coach of the Year and

Bryan Schincariol, who did a tremendous job with the ladies this year, was rewarded with the Premier Ladies ‘Coach of the Year’ award.

The only player to bring home some silverware Mareeba Ladies Goalkeeper Farrah Boustead, who won ‘Best Goalkeeper’ for the Premier Ladies Division.

Ford Cortina driver Owen Jonnson took top points in A grade with 57 followed by Andy Gamblin in second spot on 46 and Lucy Reed third with 43.

Strong win over Rovers Atherton 1st Grade got off to a good start in their first round of the Cricket Far North 40 over competition on Saturday.

With six regulars unavailable, the boys rallied in support and put in a gutsy effort to come away with a win over Rovers at Loder Park.

Rovers won the toss and elected to bat, posting a competitive 170 after a slow start.

Dylan Pettingill and Seppe Barletta bowled tight opening spells without luck before Mason Blaney got a breakthrough taking his first 1st Grade wicket.

Logan Poggioli followed suit also claiming his maiden 1st Grade wicket. Wickets were shared in a good team bowling effort to dismiss the visitors in the 38th over.

Chris Adams, returning from duties with the Qld Schoolboys U19 team, got off to a good start opening the innings with 40 runs off 40 balls. Dylan Pettingill and Brendan Lynch steadied the ship with 5 wickets down, putting on a 47 run partnership. Ethan Sanderson finished the job and got the team home under plenty of pressure, with Logan Poggioli supporting well.

Atherton reached the total in the 34th over to win by 2 wickets. Atherton will now face Mulgrave at Edmonton on Saturday in a one-day final rematch.
