Theakston takes home TJ Ryan Medal

FORMER Mareeba State High School student Joshua Theakston (pictured) has added yet another award to his list of achievements after he recently received a TJ Ryan Medal.

The TJ Ryan Medal is awarded to only ten students across the state and recognises students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their school along with community and academic excellence.

Other honours Joshua has received over the past year include being named MSHS Dux, Mareeba’s Young Citizen of the Year and receiving an Order of Australia Medal just to name a few.

Mareeba State High School Principal Scott Whybird said he is extremely proud of Joshua’s achievement.

“Not only did Josh exemplify academic excellence, his work in the community through extra-curricular activities is to be admired,” he said.

“People like Josh are who young people should strive to be like, he’s a wonderful young man with a bright future ahead of him.”

Mr Whybird said it’s the school’s third TJ Ryan Medal in four years, and he noted that he would like to thank the MSHS staff for the enormous work they do with the students.

“The staff plays a big role in these awards too,” he said.

“If they didn’t provide Josh with the right opportunities, he wouldn’t have received the award, so my congratulations go to the staff for their contribution.”

Watkins inspires Mareeba women A BELATED International Women’s Day event was held at the Mareeba Library last Thursday.

Natural Evolution’s owner and operator Krista Watkins was the guest speaker at the event, a Walkamin local who was named the National 2018 AgriFutures Rural Woman of the Year for her ground-breaking work in turning green banana waste into banana flour.

Mrs Watkins provided attendees with an insight into how the idea came to fruition and the enormous sacrifices she and her husband Rob took to make their innovative practice the resounding success it is today.

Mrs Watkins said she hopes her story can act as an example of the wonderful things women

can achieve when they believe in themselves and their ideas.

“My underlying message for women today was that when you see an opportunity, take it and turn it into something,” she said.

“And just because you’re a woman, that shouldn’t mean that there are any limitations.

“The only limitation you may be experiencing is your imagination, so do what you do best and don’t worry about anything else that is out of your control.”

Mrs Watkins’ entrepreneurship has been a point of inspiration for many women across the Tablelands, and she noted the abundance of women in this region who are more than capable of following in her footsteps.

“There are so many talented

individuals on the Tablelands, particularly women, who can achieve enormous things if given the right opportunities,” she said.

“And those opportunities are becoming more prevalent as we are seeing many people move to this region, both for lifestyle and professional reasons which is extremely exciting to see.”

Although Mrs Watkins’ banana flour product continues to go from strength to strength, she refuses to rest on her laurels and continues her revolutionary work through other means.

“We’re very excited about launching Plantation Brew Company in the coming months, which entails brewing the excess juices that we have at the moment,” she said.

“Our first product will be our sweet potato vodka, and we can’t wait to see what it will offer to the vodka industry “Added to that, we’re excited about what it will bring to local industry, as it will lend itself to a full vertical integration economy from the farm.”

Mrs Watkins also took time to thank those who invited her to speak at the International Women’s Day event.

“I think Wendy and the whole team do a wonderful job at putting a focus on celebrating the contribution women make towards our community, and that was evident at today’s event.”

Jennifer excited to lead festival into the future

THE Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee has seen a changing of the guard as they welcomed their new President Jennifer Murat this week.

Ms Murat, 29, has taken over from former President Giuliano Cordenos who was in the role for the better part of 20 years.

Ms Murat has been a committee member for seven years, the last four of which saw her serve as the Secretary.

Ms Murat said it is an honour to be named the new President of the committee, and alluded to the enormous growth the Mareeba Multicultural Festival experienced under Mr Cordenos’ two-decade long leadership, something she hopes to continue herself.

“I was first inspired to be involved with the Mareeba Multicultural Festival as both my parents are Albanian,” she said.

“So the opportunity to represent my heritage along with the Mareeba community was something I couldn’t pass up.

“And to see that dedication pay off in the form of being named President is a huge honour.”

Ms Murat said she can’t wait to take on the responsibilities that come with the presidency role.

“I am well aware that I have

enormous shoes to fill,” she said.

“However in saying that, Giuliano has taught me so much since I’ve been on the committee and has provided me with support whenever I’ve needed it, so he has been integral in helping me prepare for this position.

“It was an absolute privilege to have been given the opportunity to work alongside him.”

Ms Murat said given the festival’s continued success over the

past two decades, there won’t be too many changes under her leadership this year.

“Giuliano laid such a great foundation and I just want to keep that going,” she said.

“I’m confident however that I’ll bring a strong dedication and work ethic to the role to ensure the Mareeba Multiculutral Festival runs smoothly – and that will be my main focus for my first year as President.”

Ms Murat said the committee will be holding monthly meetings to prepare for the event later this year, and she encouraged the Mareeba community to come out and show their support.

“It is a wonderful family outing free of charge that brings the community together,” she said.

“There will be food stalls, live entertainment plus much more that caters to people of all ages.

“It’s also a chance to celebrate

the vast number of cultures we have in this region which have helped shape this community.”

Ms Murat said she would also like to extend thanks to her fellow committee members for believing in her and recognising her capability of filling the President’s role.

The Mareeba Multicultural Festival will be on Saturday, August 31.

RSL still looking for buyers

The closure of one of the town’s most much-loved clubs, the Mareeba RSL, prompted a response of disappointment from locals as it had been a major part of the community fabric since the Second World War. Since it was forced to shut its doors, curiosity has begun to grow as to what the sizeable precinct will be utilised for in the future.

RSL Far North Queensland District President Peter Sterling said the property has not been presented on the open market.

“We have had several potential buyers who have shown interest in the building, one of which progressed quite far in negotiations before deciding not to proceed further,” he said.

“This was the purchaser’s decision and we are not privy to their reasons.” Mr Sterling said there is no deadline for sale at this point. “The more important consideration is to find the right buyer for the property,” he said.

Students stamping out bullying MAREEBA State School students donned the orange last Friday in support of the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

Students from each grade created posters which included messages in opposition to bullying and violence, and it’s an extremely worthwhile initiative according to MSS Deputy Principal Michael Nielsen.

“It is important we highlight National Day of Action as bullying is quite a common occurrence in every community across the country,” he said.

“Today each student from each class made a commitment to not bully through their posters, of which they signed with either their handprint or footprint.”

Mr Nielsen said stamping out bullying is a strong focus of Mareeba State School.

“We are making a very concerted effort at this school to do our best in stopping bullying and the harm that it can cause,” he said.

“While the National Day of Action is a fantastic opportunity for the school to come together and discuss what needs to be done to limit bullying, putting an end to bullying is a focus we have every day at this school.

“Whether that is person to person or cyberbullying, this is an issue which we take very seriously at this school, and the entirety of the staff here are actively on-board which is great to see.”

Solar Farm set for Tolga RENEWABLE energy continues its surge on the Atherton Tablelands as a new 60MW Solar Farm is proposed to be constructed on Marnane Road, Tolga.

Planning approval was applied for in October of last year to the Tablelands Regional Council.

The project will be undertaken by Atherton Solar Farm, a renewable energy development, investment and operational company specialising in large scale renewable energy and storage projects.

The proposed site is on 125 hectares of freehold land which has been owned and operated by the same family for more than 60 years.

The site was chosen for its exposure to solar radiation and proximity to the National Electricity Grid.

The project is a $140 million investment which will be constructed on mostly cleared and levelled land, and is expected to bring considerable economic activity to the region.

Atherton Solar’s Director Allan Zhao said he is thrilled to be involved in delivering this project.

“It provides a great way for our landholders to remain on their land, earn a superannuation from the income of the Solar Farm, whilst ensuring that the site could be returned to an agricultural pursuit at some future date, if desired,” he said.

“By working closely with the family, and using a local project team, we ensure that our social and community obligations are met, while delivering this project.

“We aim to use local contractors as much as possible for the construction process. Hopefully it is the first of many small – medium scale renewable projects that will result in 100% renewables for Far North Queensland in the near future.”

The farm will consist of approximately 240,000 solar panels that will provide an energy production equivalent to that of 5,000 households.

Each solar panel is fixed to a metal mounting structure and then either piled or screwed into the ground, with each structure reaching up to 2.6 metres in height.

Approximately 24 power conversion units will be used across the site, with underground cabling also connecting these units together to a new sub-station which is set to be built on the north-east corner of the site.

The solar farm will be connected to the National Electricity Grid through Ergon Energy’s 66kV dual circuit overhead powerline and sub-station.

Some of the specific benefits the proposed development is predicted to bring include more than 50 local jobs during construction, 5-8 of which will remain for ongoing operation.

Other benefits are greater grid reliability via local generation sources and the potential for supplying adjacent commercial and industrial sites.

Calls for domestic violence shelter DOMESTIC violence has plagued Australian society for quite some time, and as it continues its rise to epidemic proportions, with it comes intense national discussion.

It is an issue that is being felt in Mareeba, which has prompted certain community members to ask questions as to whether enough is being done to combat the problem locally.

One such community member who is concerned with the domestic violence problem is Save the Mareeba Hospital Group spokesperson and Mareeba local Denis McKinley, who believes a shelter for victims of domestic violence should be constructed in the Mareeba township.

“Domestic violence is getting out of control in this community and the victims should have somewhere in Mareeba

they can go to escape the abuse they are subjected to at home,” he said.

“There is a shelter in Atherton and in Cairns, so why can’t there be one in Mareeba?”

“Forcing the victims to relocate to shelters in another town is wrong – it places an enormous burden on the victims, particularly if they work here or if they have children who go to school in Mareeba.

“Too often the victim is forced to move and the perpetrator is allowed to stay put.”

Mr McKinley is calling on the State and Federal Governments to provide funding for a shelter so that the victims of domestic violence in Mareeba are assured their safety.

spoke passionately about putting a stop to domestic violence in this country.

“We have committed millions of dollars towards domestic violence awareness and prevention in Queensland over the years,” she said.

“It is an absolute scourge and needs addressing.

“As it relates to a women’s shelter in Mareeba, we would first need to assess and determine whether there is a need for it here specifically.

“I will continue my talks with the domestic service organisations on the Tablelands and progress further from there.”

Ms Farmer noted that if there were to be a women’s shelter constructed in Mareeba, it is imperative that its location remains unknown to the public.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui largely echoed Ms Farmer’s sentiments.

“The safety of women experiencing domestic violence is paramount,” she said.

“I am more than willing to work alongside key stakeholders in Mareeba and the Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer to carefully assess the need and develop a plan that would adequately meet the needs of women in Mareeba and surrounds.”

With news surfacing last week of Access Community Housing Company’s plans to build ten homes for victims of abuse in Cairns, it begs the question as to whether Mareeba will ever be provided with something similar.

Let’s Dance

MAREEBA Academy of Dance held its annual concert, Let’s Dance, last Saturday, March 9 at the Mareeba Bowls Club. Months of practice paid off for the locals dancers who wowed the packed house at both the matinee and night time shows.

The concert was also a fundraiser for young Gia Smith (Generosity 4 Gia) of Mareeba, which saw $3560 raised from an auction and raffle on the night.

Dad’s Army ready to race “Every year we say it will be our last, yet we keep putting our hand up to compete,” he laughed.

The Dad’s Army are using the 2019 Great Wheelbarrow Race to fundraise for a worthwhile cause as they will be donating much-needed funding to the Mareeba Hospital, $500 of which was officially donated courtesy of the Mareeba Leagues Club last Friday.

Dad’s Army team member John Stirrup said this year’s fundraising efforts have exceeded expectations.

“Our target was $5,000 and we have surpassed that as we’re currently sitting at $6,000 which is fantastic,” he said.

“Our plan is to put that money towards some medical equipment that will allow Mareeba patients to stay locally rather than having to travel to Atherton or Cairns for treatment.”

The Dad’s Army Great Wheelbarrow Race team accepts a $500 donation from the Mareeba Leagues Club last week.

ONE of the region’s most wellrespected teams the Dad’s Army will once again be competing in the McDonald’s Great Wheelbarrow Race this year.

In what will be their seventh year, the Dad’s Army are a team boasting of 10 participants whose average age is north of 70, and they hope their feats can act as a source of inspiration for the younger competitors who partic-

ipate in the annual event.

“It gives us great personal satisfaction to compete in this race every year, and hopefully the desire and determination we display as a team can provide the younger teams with the motivation to keep competing,” team member Gary Morgan said.

“Each year this race provides us with the opportunity to build on our fantastic camaraderie we

have amongst the team all while keeping fit.”

Fellow team member Graham Morrow said the Dad’s Army was borne from an ANZAC Day event held nearly a decade ago.

“It initially began with a number of ex-servicemen deciding to join local gym Essential Fitness to improve on their health,” he said.

“And from there someone

had the idea of participating in the Great Wheelbarrow Race, and we haven’t looked back since.

Mr Morgan said the Dad’s Army would like to extend their thanks to the Mareeba Leagues Club for their generous donation.

“We are deeply grateful for the financial help the Mareeba Leagues Club have provided us, and it is sure to go a long way,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Morgan also mentioned that the team would like to commend Essential Fitness for their constant support throughout the many years they have competed in the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

“Essential Fitness have been supporters of ours right from the beginning,” he said.

“That is where we train and the instructors have done a great job at whipping us into shape each and every year.

“They provide with an enormous amount of motivation as a team and we couldn’t do it without them.”

Easter egg hunt returns to Kuranda

The Easter Bunny has been busy hiding chocolate in Kuranda in preparation for a giant Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 20.

Tourism Kuranda Executive Officer Kahlia Pepper said Kuranda would be open all Easter weekend including Good Friday with plenty of activities, shopping and dining options for the whole family.

“The village’s annual Easter in the Park celebration on Easter Saturday is a day of free family activities in Kuranda’s Centenary Park,” she said.

“There will be five face painters, three jumping castles, horse

and carriage rides, street performers, games and fun arts and crafts activities to keep the kids entertained from 10am to 3pm.

“It is the tenth anniversary of Easter in the Park so we are bringing back the traditional Easter egg hunt with thousands of chocolate eggs hidden around the Kuranda Heritage Markets.

“Hit FM will get the festivities started with an outside broadcast before the Easter Bunny arrives in Centenary Park at 1.30pm to meet the kids.

Questions raised over cost of new gardens PROPONENTS of the Northern Australia Botanical Gardens planned for Atherton have been left wondering why the project would cost a reported $21 million, as put forward by TRC Mayor Joe Paronella.

The Atherton Lions Club has been developing plans for the landmark development over four years which would see native plants and trees, a suspension bridge across Priors Creek, playgrounds, gardens and barbeque tables between Priors Creek bridge and the Platypus Park.

Spokesman for the Priors Creek Investigation Committee Terry Clark has questioned why the council has placed such a large price tag on the garden development.

“I don’t know where council will spend $21 million over five to 10 years. Our committee proposes to raise funds to build the whole project,” Mr Clark said.

“All the council has to do is provide road access, roundabouts, relocate the information centre with a bus terminal.

Mr Clark said TRC had stipulated an internal public roadway was needed for maintenance and rubbish collection but a public road would not fit with the purpose of the park.

“The council has offered a tender for a company to compile an open plan for the project and has agreed that all interested parties can consult with the planners prior to it being drawn up,” he said.

munity groups and schools to enable them to adopt a section of the park to build and continue with ongoing maintenance.”

A plant propagation facility could be built on the section of park near the Men’s Shed and the new RSL club.

“There is another ideal location near the existing bike track base where the council would have ample room for a propagation facility which could provide a variety of natives for the park and gardens.

“They could sell the present propagation shed next to Carinya aged care facility and have a new plant on council land at no cost. This would free up land for Carinya on which they desperately need to expand.”

A large block of residential land opposite the junior rugby league grounds is being developed for housing and an aged care facility and is connected to town via the busy Tolga Road

which is not suitable for older people riding mobility scooters.

“We are looking at building a wooden suspension bridge over Priors Creek similar to the one at Herberton Village which would allow aged people to ride scooters to easily get into the town centre without having to go a long way around on Tolga Road.

“The crossing is not far from the proposed new aged care facility and has a gazetted lane access to the edge of the creek.

“The bridge would be a feature of the park and make a great viewing platform of the creek and rainforest.”

Mr Clark said he believes the cost of developing the project would be no more than $5 to $6 million under the group’s plan.

He said the investigation group would be seeking federal and state grants and already had assistance from Member for Hill Shane Knuth and Member for Kennedy Bob Katter.

FlexiChoice CEO Virginia Carr hopes to see greater support for unpaid carers.

Unpaid carers fight for greater support A COALITION of carer organisations and unpaid carers had their voices heard recently in Brisbane as they met with federal politicians to discuss better support for informal and unpaid carers ahead of the upcoming federal election.

The roundtable was hosted by national campaigning coalition, Caring Fairly, which was established in August of last year.

Caring Fairly is coordinated

by Mind Australia and is represented in Queensland by Arafmi Ltd, Carers QLD and Eating Disorders Queensland.

Caring Fairly is a grassroots movement and major advocacy campaign which aims to influence government to deliver sustainable, fairer, and more inclusive outcomes for all unpaid carers in Australia.

In Queensland, there are an estimated 494,200 unpaid carers, which roughly equates to one in eight people in the state who have a caring role.

It is estimated that $8.3 billion in resources would be required each year from the government’s health and community sector to replace the work carried out by unpaid carers in Queensland if they could no longer undertake their caring role.

A strong point of emphasis of the three-year campaign is to identify the disadvantages unpaid carers encounter when trying to obtain or keep paid work, and the residual impact that can

have on their economic security, standard of living, and emotional and physical health.

Added to that, it highlights the disadvantages young people with carer responsibilities experience in procuring educational opportunities.

These are pertinent issues which are being felt on the local front, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of disability support service ‘FlexiChoice’ Virginia Carr noted how it’s impacting the Mareeba community.

“Unpaid carers are certainly in need of greater support,” she said.

“A number of unpaid carers may never have had the opportunity to enter the workforce or have been without a job for quite some time.

“So not only is it important that we put systems in place to ensure carers have better access to employment, but also to best prepare those who are re-entering the workforce.

“With the advancement of today’s technology, there are a lot of carers who don’t have the confidence to return to work, and that’s something we need to change.”

Ms Carr said a system where carers are provided direct support (support workers to assist with the caring role) each week, would allow them to gain work experience or earn an income which would be extremely beneficial for both the carer and the

person they are caring for.

“Giving unpaid carers the chance to go out and work gives all involved a sense of independence,” she said.

“And through the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), we are seeing it make a huge difference in some carers’ lives; however we want to see this opportunity offered to all Carers.

“It has enormous potential and we’re confident we’ll see major improvements in the years to come.”

An area which Ms Carr said had been lost since the switch to NDIS in July of last year was the support of a network of service providers that were in place through the previous funding model.

“In the transition, key prominent service providers have unfortunately been phased out, and with it the valuable long-term support relationship and knowledge of the local carers has been lost.”

“That is something that concerns me and hopefully will be addressed in the future.”

Unpaid carers have played and continue to play an integral role in the Mareeba community, and with disability organisations such as FlexiChoice continuing to fight for greater recognition for the work they do, they will hopefully receive the muchneeded support they deserve very soon.

Building tenders for Atherton Hospital Redevelopment nears SIX major building companies were invited to compete for the principal contractor role in the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment project.

The select tender group were available for local suppliers and subcontractors to meet at the project’s industry networking session which was held at the Atherton International Club from last Thursday.

The potential principal contractors have been asked to submit bids for the project which includes three new buildings on site; the clinical services building, community allied and mental health building and the engineering services building, as well as undertake other refurbishments at the hospital.

“Queensland Health has

agreed to run a select tender process for the redevelopment to provide the infrastructure to deliver high quality health services.” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) Acting Director Major Capital John Mayo said.

“We are looking for a principal contractor with demonstrated experience in delivering complex infrastructure projects in a complex health service environment.

“The principal contractor is required to engage with local suppliers and tradespeople as part of the Queensland Charter for Local Content, which is designed to maximise local content through participation of capable local industry.

“The Industry Briefing and Networking session will enable

local builders and suppliers to meet and network with the potential principal contractors vying for the contract.”

In the 2016/17 State Budget, the Queensland Government announced funding for the redevelopment of the Atherton Hospital through the $230 million Advancing Queensland’s Health Infrastructure Program.

Atherton Hospital is an aging country hospital with some of its buildings constructed in the early 1900s, and has been identified as a high priority infrastructure project to continue delivering contemporary healthcare to the Tablelands population.

Tenders for the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment are expected to be called in late March.

Off and racing in 2019

THE 2019 motor racing year opened for the Tableland Competition Car Club on Sunday at Herberton’s Tepon Speedway.

Ford Cortina driver Owen Jonsson took top points in A grade followed by Holden Commodore driver’s Slatah Walmsley in second place and Andy Gamblin third.

First place in B grade went to Ford Falcon driver Andrew McCreath with Chris Hartge second in a Holden Commodore and Mitchel White driving a Ford Falcon third.

Holden Commodore driver’s won the top placings in C grade with Shae Jonsson first, Ian Meyer second and Hamish Lalor third.

Next round of motor racing action at the Tepon Speedway is on Sunday, April 14.

Gladiators gear up for State Championships THE Mareeba Gladiators U12s side is an extremely talented one, and that is evidenced by four of their players being selected to represent Peninsula at the Queensland School Sport 11-12 years Rugby League Championships to be held in Brisbane in June.

Tyler Srhoj, Cayde Miller, Chase Sheppard and Jake Bombardieri are the four Gladiators players who were chosen to don the Peninsula colours, and they are sure to be tested as they will be pitted against some of the best rugby league players in the state for their age.

It is a challenge Tyler Srhoj said he is really looking forward to.

“I know there are going to be a lot of big and fast teams down in Brisbane, so it will definitely

be hard,” Tyler said.

“But that’s something I can’t wait for, this is the first time I’ve made a Peninsula team so I want to play well.”

Tyler said being selected for Peninsula means a lot to him, and it has been made all the more special that he is able to share it with his Mareeba teammates.

“It will be cool to be able to play with my Gladiator teammates down in Brisbane,” he said.

Fellow Gladiator and Peninsula teammate Cayde Miller echoed Tyler’s jubilance at being selected to represent his region.

“I tried out last year and didn’t make it, so I came back again this year and I’m really happy to have been chosen,” he said.

“I’ve only been playing footy for three years but I’ve worked

really hard on my game.”

The physical aspect of the game is crucial in rugby league, and it’s something Tyler and Cayde both appear to relish.

“I play lock and Cayde plays second row so we have to do a lot of the physical stuff,” Tyler said.

“We love tackling and running over people we don’t like,” he laughed.

While Tyler and Cayde are well aware of the strong standard that awaits them in Brisbane, they believe their time playing for the Gladiators in the lead-up to the tournament will be the perfect preparation.

The U11-12s Queensland School Sport Rugby League Championships will be held at the Carina Leagues Football Club from June 27-July 2.

Roosters too strong in reserve grade THE Mareeba Gladiators reserve grade side couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to strike first in their match-up with the Atherton Roosters on Saturday as they dominated possession and field position throughout the opening ten minutes.

They failed to capitalise however and were unable to cross the line, as two near tries were called back for a forward pass and knock-on respectively.

That proved to be crucial in the context of the game, as the Atherton Roosters ran in two quick tries almost immediately after being awarded decent field position.

The remainder of the first half saw a further two tries scored, with both sides securing one try apiece, resulting in the Roosters taking a 18-6 lead into the main break.

The second half was a much more one-sided affair, as the Roosters managed three unanswered tries to ensure an unas-

sailable lead.

The Gladiators were able to score an impressive length of the field consolation try, however ultimately the Roosters were far too strong as they ran out 32-12 winners.

Gladiators coach Cameron McPherson said given their lack of time to train together as a team, he isn’t putting too much stock into their first performance of the year.

“We only had 10 or twenty minutes as a unit to really finetune our combinations for tonight, so we definitely lacked polish,” he said.

“I think that’s a big reason why our ball control and execution was lacking tonight, so Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton we’ll look to improve on that as Roosters reserve grade match in the season progresses.

Juniors gather at Davies Park for preseason fixtures SATURDAY marked the first preseason game for the Mareeba Gladiators Junior Rugby League teams as they took the field at Davies Park.

While there were mixed results for the Gladiators, the day was ultimately about allowing each team to find their feet before the regular season starts after Easter.

Mareeba Gladiators Junior Rugby League President Darrin Hastie said the day was a resounding success which was

played in the right spirit.

“I would like to thank Edmonton, the Scorpions and Redlynch for making the trip up to Mareeba,” he said.

“I would also like to congratulate the Gladiators players who did a wonderful job at representing the club in the right fashion.

“It was a very hot day but each player gave it their all and that’s all we can ask for.”

Hastie said he is hopeful that the Mareeba Gladiators can secure a further two home presea-

son games.

“If we can get one or two more home games before the season starts that will be fantastic,” he said.

“We had a great turn-out on the weekend and it shows how much passion there is for the game here, so it will be great to continue to build on that.”

Hastie said he would like to acknowledge the volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the day went off without a hitch.

Bulls bow out of FFA Cup THE Mareeba Bulls were bundled out of the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) Cup match at the first hurdle on Saturday night at Lindsay Australia Stadium in Mareeba.

After recruiting a number of former Cairns FC players in the off season, expectations were high at the club after a disappointing season last year.

The Bulls came up against arch-rivals, the Leichhardt Lions, who were coming off a win over the Southside Comets in the first round of the premiership last weekend.

In the first fifteen minutes the bulls showed what they were capable of with some slick passing and movement over the pitch and were rewarded with a well taken chance by Darcy McCormack to give the home side a one nil advantage after just 10 minutes.

Bulls strikers should have put away a further two or three chances in that dominant period but failed to do so.

The Lions responded after some haphazard defending and

before the Bulls could respond found themselves three one down at the break.

The start of the second half wasn’t much better for the bulls as more sloppy defending saw them go further behind.

It wasn’t until the 25th minute of the second half that the home team decided to play like they knew they could pegging another goal back courtesy of Justin Sabbidin.

Wayward attempts on goal and a lack of composure cost the Bulls dearly failing to capitalize on a number of chances which could have seen a different result.

The Lions put the icing on the cake with a fifth goal right on full time to give them a flattering 5-2 win.

Coach Perry Krakowczyk said he was very disappointed with the result.

“We played very well in the first fifteen minutes then our intensity dropped and we allowed them to play and they scored a few goals and we dropped even further, our communication was

not there and our shape was gone, but in the last 15-20 minutes we started playing football again and should have come away with the match,” said coach Krakowczyk.

“But it’s all about opportunities – they took theirs and we were not able to take ours.

“We were missing a few players, but I am not going to use that as an excuse, we put the best team at our disposal out there but the individual mistakes punished us – you can’t make these mistakes at this level.

“The FFA Cup is great, but our focus is really on the premiership, we trained really well these last few weeks, but I’ll be after some answers from the boys at training on Tuesday night.”

The Bulls now take on last year’s grand finalists, the Southside Comets, at home this Saturday night at 7pm as they begin their assault on the 2019 premiership.

Games start from 1pm with the youth, ladies at 3pm and reserves at 5pm.

Atherton strike first in women’s match-up THE first senior fixture on Saturday saw the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters women’s sides battle it out for bragging rights in their first ever match-up in the CDRL’s inaugural NRL Women’s Touch Rugby League Competition.

In what started out as a very tight affair, there wasn’t much separating either side for most of the first half, with one try to the Roosters only proving the difference.

However a strong kicking game by the Roosters and a fading Gladiators defensive line allowed for the Atherton outfit to strengthen their lead in the second half and ulti-

mately secure a 16-0 win.

Atherton Roosters coach Natasha Clark said it was great to see such a strong performance from her side after suffering a loss to Ivanhoes the weekend prior.

“I was really pleased to see the enormous improvements we made this weekend,” she said.

“Our ball control and kicking game probably were the areas that we had the greatest improvement in, and if we can continue to execute like we did today I’m confident we’ll be a strong side moving forward.”

Despite the loss, Mareeba Gladiators coach Edwardine

Gela chose to focus on her players’ effort rather than the result.

“Ultimately with today being our first game of the season, it was about the players getting out there and having a bit of fun,” she said.

“Obviously we would’ve loved to come away with the win, however I can’t fault any of my players for their commitment today.

“There’s been strong numbers at training and there’s clearly a passion for the game here in Mareeba, so it’s really exciting to see this competition doing so well so early in the season.”

Roosters take win in preseason derby

Atherton head into Cricket Far North semi-final ATHERTON played a dead rubber against Norths at Loder Park on Saturday. The Cricket Far North semi-final preview did not go the locals way with Norths going away with a 6-wicket win.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Atherton shuffled their batting order to give the lower order time in the middle in preparation for the upcoming knock-out semi.

Luke Parnell and Lachlan Hollitt made the most of their promotion, top scoring with 20 and 14 respectively. Nobody else

got a start as Norths tore through the line-up, dismissing the home team for 60, and claiming a 6 wicket win.

Atherton will put the loss behind them as they prepare for a finals rematch at Griffiths Park this Saturday, March 23.

THERE was a strong crowd on hand at Davies Park on Saturday to watch Tableland rivals the Mareeba Gladiators and the Atherton Roosters in their first A-Grade match-up for the year.

Poor ball control plagued both teams in what was a very tight affair throughout.

The Mareeba Gladiators came out strong in the first half, putting on successive tries to jump out to an early 8-0 lead.

The Roosters quickly hit back through their five-eighth Jermaine Pedro to close the gap to just two points.

Both sides would go on to score a further try each resulting in a 14-10 score line in favour of the Gladiators at the half.

As fatigue began to set in throughout the second half, both

teams struggled with execution and ball control meaning points were harder to come by.

That was until the Roosters managed to score two tries in the last 20 minutes to secure a hardfought 22-14 win.

Atherton Roosters coach Graham Clark Snr said he was pleased with his side’s performance.

“Similar to last week, tonight was about playing some of my younger players and building our squad’s depth,” he said.

“I more so wanted to see a strong effort put forward by our side, and they did that which was great to see.”

Clark Snr said his side’s poor start is something he’ll be looking to rectify as the season progresses.

“We allowed a couple of cheap tries early which was disappointing,” he said.

“Our goal coming into the game was to win the ruck early, and we didn’t do that.

“In saying that, as the game wore on we became more dominant in the ruck and that was a big reason behind our win in the end - now it’s about ensuring we do it for longer periods.”

There was optimism in the Gladiators camp also, as captain Trent Barnard said there’s a lot to learn from their first preseason loss.

“I was really happy with the boy’s effort tonight,” he said.

“It’s a new group of players so we’re still finding our feet as a team, so our issues with holding on to the ball and execution

in the red zone is to be expected somewhat.”

Barnard said the most pleasing aspect of his team’s play was their defence on their own line.

“I thought we did a really good job when we were tested defensively,” he said.

“And that’s an area of our game we can build on into the future.

“There’s a great camaraderie amongst the group so I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season and I’m confident we can do well.”

The Gladiators won’t have to wait long to make up for their loss to the Roosters as both sides play each other again in Round 1 at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium next Saturday.
