EVERY month Queensland Cricket acknowledges an outstanding volunteer making them the ‘Volunteer of the Month’.

There is not another more hardworking member of Mareeba District Cricket Club other than President Irene Roy. Irene has played a vital part in the club’s revival with two successful senior teams plus a women’s competition that had never before been seen on the Tablelands.

Irene can be found every Saturday and Sunday attending any game she can, scoring for Mareeba whenever she can.

Irene was extremely honoured to receive this award.

“I was very honoured when I got the news,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic thing to be recognised for.

“I couldn’t have got here without the wonderful committee I have supporting me, as well as the players because without

players, you can’t have a club.”

Irene was the driving force behind the approval and construction of the new ‘Frosty Firth’ Canteen at Borzi Park that was unveiled last month and has recently procured more grants for even more improvements to the ground and the cricket club.

Irene has proven herself to be the steel backbone of the club and hopes to continue to make her district proud.

THE township of Dimbulah has had a number of local heroes over the years and we have just discovered another.

After a short stint in local radio Charles Kahn decided to try his hand in emergency services, namely the Ambulance.

It is there that he met his calling and quickly developed a love for caring for people with injuries, sometimes in horrific circumstances.

Charles has just received the National Medal for Diligent Service of 25 years with the Queensland Ambulance service, a true testament of his dedication and commitment to his job and his community.

He began life as an ambulance officer in 1992, spent a few years at the Mareeba Station

before being a permanent fixture in Dimbulah from 1996.

“I love the family environment here” he said. “I had a young family at the time and I thought this was the perfect place to bring them up”. “I like attending to sick people, I love the job, it can be testing sometimes especially when it’s people you know “.

“I love this little town, I’ve been made welcome and have made a lot of friends” he said.

“I’ve really enjoyed the last 25 years “.

It will be back to work for Charles and the friends he has made and the community he treasures know that they have a dedicated local who has their back in time of need.

Alternative water methods sought WATER security in the region was front and centre last Friday as the Yungaburra CWA Hall played host to a community meeting to discuss a variety of issues currently impacting the Tablelands.

The meeting was held by the Liberal National Party Atherton Branch, and saw LNP Shadow Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Andrew Powell in attendance.

With Cairns asking for a solution to their long-term water supply and a number of Tableland farmers voicing their concerns surrounding water affordability, the LNP Atherton Branch feel they could potentially have the answer – and it is not the Nullinga Dam. The water transfer proposal is being billed as one that could supply water to the MareebaDimbulah Water Supply Scheme and Cairns for more than 100 years courtesy of the North Johnstone River Catchment.

This will hopefully ensure

growth in the agricultural sector and not increase the cost of water by allowing a greater increase in the throughput of water in Tinaroo Dam. In the proposal, it outlines that the cost of transferring the water will be offset by hydroelectricity generation, with the catchment to be diverted by three dams on the Beatrice River, Dirran Creek and North Johnstone River.

All three of those rivers lie east of Malanda and Milla Milla, an area on the Tablelands which receives more than 2000 millimetres of rain annually.

The proposal’s unconfirmed yield expectation to come from the three dams is 384,000 mega litres per year, which is well and truly sufficient in providing for the region.

Minister Powell said the purpose of his visit was to hear from locals around a couple of key areas, namely the region’s water infrastructure.

“There’s a lot of interest here around lifting the water from

the North Johnstone to Tinaroo as outlined in the presentation, which is something we’ll definitely be looking at,” he said.

“In addition to going over this diversion scheme, we’ve announced (LNP) a couple of key things for this region such as the establishment of the Queensland Dam Company along with our commitment to getting Nullinga Dam shovel ready.”

“We’re consistently hearing in Far North Queensland that Nullinga really needs to happen, so while today’s presentation was about alternative water infrastructure, we still think Nullinga Dam is something the residents in this part of Queensland want.

“We don’t need to take an either-or approach regarding the implementation of water infrastructure in FNQ; if we’re elected next year we could potentially deliver both if it makes sense from a logistical and financial standpoint.”

Accommodation in Atherton set for a boost THE construction of ten rooms that will be added to the Atherton Motel is well underway and on schedule.

The Express spoke with the accommodation provider’s owner and operator Robert Monk when construction began earlier this year, where he alluded to his vision of capitalising on an underutilised tourism industry on the Tablelands.

With it now coming to fruition, the additional ten rooms to the already existing 18-room complex will open up a myriad of business opportunities according to Mr Monk, and they are ones he is eagerly anticipating once it is completed early next year.

“We feel there’s a gap in the market here in Atherton in terms of accommodation, particularly for tourists,” Mr Monk said.

“With 28 rooms we can cater for far more people, including business professionals, selfdrive and coach tourists along with our regulars.

“The Atherton Tablelands is a beautiful place with a number of natural attractions that are to be enjoyed, and we’re confident with modernised rooms it will further encourage those tourists visiting the region to contemplate an extended stay.

“And with that comes great economic opportunity for Atherton as a whole, as during that time spent here they will put their hard-earned money into the local businesses across town.”

Mr Monk said the feedback he has received from fellow members of the Atherton business community has been extremely positive.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to is of the opinion that more accommodation is needed here on the Tablelands,” he said.

“And this community is fantastic for reciprocal trade, so the support we’ve felt throughout this project will definitely be repaid.”

Mr Monk said he would like to thank the community and in particular Adrian Formosa and his team at A&C Constructions.

“Adrian has done a wonderful job getting here on time every day and working tirelessly to ensure this is on schedule,” he said.

“This is an exciting project and the relatively smooth process that has been experienced from the planning stage to now is largely in part to the hard work by Adrian and his team.

“We can’t wait to bring something like this to the Atherton Tablelands.”

ATHERTON Hospital will have a new CT scanner installed next week to replace the existing scanner as part of Queensland Health’s Health Technology Equipment Replacement program.

A computed tomography (CT) scanner uses x-rays and a computer to diagnose illness and injury.

Director of Medical Imaging, Dru Locos, said that patients requiring a CT scan between 15 and 22 November may need to go to Cairns Hospital during the installation of the new scanner.

New CT scanners will also be installed at Innisfail from 22

November and Cairns in December. All three scanners are worth $2.7 million in total.

“The new CT scanner at Atherton is a great step forward for the Tablelands community,” said Mr Locos.

“It is great news for our patients because we are improving access to current technology closer to home and reducing the need to travel for certain types of scans” said Mr Locos “The replacement program is an effective way for regional and rural hospitals to keep up to date with technology improvements and best practices in medical imaging,” said Mr Locos.

“The new CT scanner will produce images of a higher quality and allow scans to be done faster with reduced doses of radiation.

“These improvements not only benefit the patient but also gives our clinicians improved confidence in their decision making,” said Mr Locos.

Mareeba Hospital will have a new CT scanner installed early next year. Refurbishment works at the hospital will begin next year to make room for their new CT scanner which will be the first time a CT scanner is available at Mareeba Hospital.

Young Abby brings joy to sick kids 13 YEAR old Abby Campman of Mareeba has been attending sewing classes with Lisa Wyer for the past four years. Her latest project has been sewing and appliqueing pillowcases to donate to the Mareeba Hospital Paediatric Unit.

Last Wednesday Abby and Lisa made a special visit the Hospital and presented the pillowcases to Midwifery and Nurse Unit Manager Michelle Bombardieri and Paediatric Clinical Nurse Debbie Carlton.

Abby and Lisa have designed each pillowcase with a unique pattern and Abby has practiced

her sewing skills to produce these wonderful pillowcases.

These new pillowcases will enhance the homely environ-

ment of the kids ward for the sick children who are admitted to Mareeba Hospital.

MAINTENANCE of the Mareeba and Dimbulah swimming pools has been made easier and more efficient after new filtration systems were installed at both facilities.

Council received funding from the Queensland Government to upgrade the water treatment infrastructure which is critical to the daily operation of the pools.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the

filters at both facilities were aging and needed to be replaced.

"The new state of the art filtration systems have made a tremendous difference to the daily operation of the pools," Cr Gilmore said.

"Swimming pools carry a high operating cost and without the support of the Queensland Government, Council would not have been able to replace the critical infrastructure and con-

tinue providing the service to the community."

The Dimbulah swimming pool filtration system upgrade was jointly funded by the Queensland Government's Get Playing Places and Spaces program and Mareeba Shire Council while the Mareeba swimming pool filtration system upgrade was funded by the Queensland Government's Works for Queensland Program.

Atherton High celebrates academic achievements

STUDENTS were rewarded for their hard work and commitment last week at the Atherton State High School annual presentation night.

Students were recognised for their prowess in school subjects as well as extracurricular activities including: sports, community engagements and all around

attitude in upholding the schools values.

There were four standout reward recipients at this year’s presentation including both the junior and senior Dux, Sportspersons of the Year and the Student of the Year award.

The 2019 Senior Dux was awarded to Nikolas Edsen and

Mayor's Christmas appeal helps bring joy to families EACH year, the Mareeba Shire Council's Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that the vulnerable and isolated people in the Mareeba Shire are able to experience the joy of Christmas.

Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging residents to get behind the appeal, saying there were many people within the Mareeba Shire who needed assistance this festive season.

"In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal, which exemplifies what Christmas is all about," Cr Gilmore said.

Cr Gilmore is encouraging those who need assistance to apply at their local community centre.

"Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community."

Council distributes food

vouchers to help ease the burden at what can be a stressful time for those struggling to make ends meet. Residents can apply at their local community centres in Dimbulah, Julatten, Kuranda and Mareeba.

To be eligible to receive assistance, residents need to be receiving a Government welfare benefit.

Those residents who are outside the welfare system should see their local agency for assessment; the community centres will then distribute food vouchers to the residents in time for Christmas.

Donations to the appeal can be made at Council's service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda and Shire libraries.

Residents can also make a donation online or send their donation by cheque to Mayor's Christmas Appeal, PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. Make the cheque payable to MSC Mayor's Christmas Appeal. No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal.

THE annual Tablelands Toy Run is back for its 23rd year and will see bikers from all across the region spreading Christmas cheer.

The Toy Run is held in partnership with Salvation Army to help underprivileged kids across Queensland wake up to a present underneath the tree with their name on it.

The ride will start at 9am on Saturday, November 23 at the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade

and will finish at the Tolga Salvation Army Store on the Kennedy Highway for the handing over of toys and a BBQ. Breakfast will be available to purchase at the starting location from 7.30am and prizes will also be awarded for the best decorated bike and best dressed rider.

The ‘Student of the Year’ award is given to a student who consistently achieves very high academic results and participates in a variety of academic, sporting, leadership, cultural and social events with all the staff and students at the school including the community.

Fire ban for Far North Queensland residents QUEENSLAND Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) have imposed a local fire ban for Far Northern residents.

The local fire ban was put in place on Friday, November 8 for residents in the Etheridge and Croydon Local Government areas.

Heightened fire conditions are perfect for bushfires to ignite and spread quickly.

Under a local fire ban all open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been cancelled.

Power tools may be used during a local fire ban however QFES encourages people to use these with extreme care and ensure adequate equipment is available to extinguish any fire which may start.

This may include having a person available to watch out for any ignitions that occur.

The ban is expected to remain in place until Friday, November 15, 2019.

MAREEBA and Memorial Bowls Club member Sue Brady (pictured) recently returned from competing in the State Senior Side.

Mrs Brady was chosen to represent Queensland on the green and won a gold medal against the All Australian States and Territories side in New South Wales.

THE Mareeba Mazda Tier 2 team played Atherton T at the weekend. Metzger got 3 for 2 off 3 overs and Mac Cureton 2 for 7 off 3 T. Hampson.

L. Winton took a wicket each and Mac Cureton took 2 catches while Jett Apps top scored on 28 and Mac Cureton made 20.

The Duesburys and Curcios Tier 3 had a nice win with Mareeba scoring 8/150.

Angus Campman excelled on 71 and Jace Cureton on 25. Mulgrave was 8/103 with Jace Cureton 3/11 and Jake Bombardieri 2/8 while Angus Campman took 2 catches.

The Peter Roy Photography and Hansen Ford 3rds had a good win with Trevor Roy scoring 68, Ian Pedersen 44 and Ben Jones 38 and

bowling Roy Cleall 2/35, Cian Cockrane 2/35 and Angus Campman 2/37.

For the ladies the Cricket Chicks won on a forfeit.

The Mareeba Seafood King Ladies had a win against Norths with Janelle Smithwick excelling on 102 not out, hitting one 6 and 17 fours. Peta retired on 18 and Rayna Jonsson 18 finishing on 3 for 149. Norths finished 7/120 with Kelsey Butler 3/20 and Carmel Dayes 2/6.

The Tura Sports 2nds are in a good position in a 2 dayer against Port Douglas.

Mareeba finished on 10/180 with Brendan Payne 63, Ben Jones 20 and the team have Port Douglas 6 /69.

Ben Jones got 2/21, Leonard Hodges 1/8 and Brendan Payne 1/10.

Magro’s championship winning year

TO say that John Magro (pictured) enjoyed an outstanding 2019 campaign would be quite the understatement, after he dominated the Australian Formula 3 Championship with six from six round wins.

The Mareeba, North Queensland-based racer not only won

every round, but he managed to remain undefeated with 18 race wins from as many starts. The only blight on Magro’s year was taking out five pole positions from the six rounds.

“To win the Australian Formula 3 Championship is a massive honour, especially consid-

ering the calibre of drivers who have won it over the years,” expressed the 34-year-old racer.

“Formula 3 is one of the toughest and fastest categories in the country, so be able to come away with the Australian Formula 3 Championship the way I did was something that makes

this even more special.”

In what was an outstanding year, Magro said that the Australian Championship dominance, which included setting new outright lap records at three of the rounds (Winton Motor Raceway - Vic, The Bend Motorsport Park - SA, and Wakefield

Park Raceway - NSW), saw him take each round as it comes.

“The lap records were something I was really trying to chase at every round,” he said.

“My team worked on setup every session and when the track conditions were right, I went for it.

“To go with the year undefeated is a huge achievement; I kept my head down and had to take each race as it comes.”

Magro credited a lot of his 2019 Australian Championship success to the South Australianbased team that he drove for RTek Motorsports.

“I can’t thank everyone from the R-Tek Motorsports team enough for all of their support and hard work throughout the year, as they provided me with a great car every time I hit the track,” he praised.

“The R-Tek Motorsports team are a very solid operation and they were definitely one of the keys to my Australian Cham-

Far North clinches championships THE Cricket Far North (CFN) teams have much to celebrate after their stellar performances in the Regional Championship.

The U18, U21 and Open divisions for the championship blew the competition out of the water with all teams winning their respective age divisions and taking away trophies.

This is a fantastic achievement for cricket in the Far North and specifically the Tablelands with 12 players from the region playing in the Championship.

Mareeba District Cricket Vice President Michael France was extremely happy with the results and what it meant for cricket in FNQ. “From the grassroots we put all this effort into training in our local area, these boys have kept it going and the results speak for themselves,” he said.

Brothers set for nationals

A LOCAL trio of brothers who have been racing in karts and motorsports for more than 16 years have now set their sights on a national title.

Jamie, Leigh and Mitchell Naylor have not only been racing each other since they were kids but others as well and sharpened their skills from a young age.

In the past few years Mitchell and Leigh have shared the endurance national races and in most of these races and shared a podium finish as well.

Now with financial commitments and work taking priority, Mitchell is standing down to let Jamie take over the reins in the upcoming Shannons Nationals Finale this weekend.

“There are a few options on the cards for next year, but I’m not in a position to confirm anything just yet,” admitted Magro, who is the past has spent time in not only Formula 3 in past years on a part-time basis, but also selected appearances in various other categories such as GT Championship and Carrera Cup. Anglers flock to Barra Bash Atherton batsman Dan Parnell on Saturday.

Fisherman Jack Centofanti enjoyed perfect fishing weather at Tinaroo Dam over the weekend.

THE 2019 Barra Bash was a huge success with hundreds taking to the water to fish Tinaroo Dam over the weekend in search of the biggest Barra.

The annual event saw 853

keen anglers nominate – 563 adults, 213 juniors and 77 small fry. Eleven species were reported over the three days – 218 barra, 87 redclaw, 931 catfish, 125 tilapia and 41 sooty grunter. Of

the 218 barra caught, 34 (15%) were over 1m.

The champion angler was Liam Casella of Cairns who caught a total of 22 fish for a total length of 13.67.

Winner of the Tableland Hardware $10,000 lucky draw was Darryl Panigas of Kairi and the Junior longest barra (1180) went to Anthony Simonato of Mareeba.

LOCAL cricketers Mason Blaney and Chris Adams returned from rep duties with NQ caps as reward for their great batting performances at the QCC NQ Zone Championships.

Mason top-scored with a 70 during the championship and Chris struck a career high 147 off 130 balls. The lads will now represent North Queensland at Qld Country Championships in U18 and U21 teams respectively.

At the weekend Atherton 1st Grade travelled to MinnieconGregory Oval on Saturday to kick off their Cricket Far North 2-day match against Mulgrave.

Atherton were sent in to bat first and Chris Adams and Paul Nasser got the team off to a handy start with a 47 run opening partnership. Chris went on to post a classy 75 finding the

boundary six times with some lovely cover-drives.

Atherton looked to be on track for a competitive total, posting some decent partnerships including Adams and Hollitt (53), Boorman and Parnell (53) and Parnell and Pittorino (43).

The highlight of Dan Parnell’s 46 off 47 was a beautiful straight-drive six, while Tom Boorman's 41 off 57 featured six of his signature pull-shots to the boundary.

A disappointing lower order collapse saw the last six wickets fall for 10 runs to be all-out 235.

Although well short of the total they wanted, Atherton will be quietly confident of defending 235 next week.

FORD Cortina driver Owen Jonsson maintained his stranglehold on the Driver of the Year title for the Tableland Competition Car Club by taking home the award for the second year running.

It was also his fifth time in winning the club’s top award during a twelve year driving career at Herberton’s Tepon Motor Racing Circuit.

Other trophy awards at the club’s 2019 presentation night on Saturday included Sportsman of the Year Kirk Poole and Best and Fairest Driver Lucy Reed.

Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Driver awards were both presented to rising star Brad Brook. Ian Meyer was C grade’s best while Andrew McCreath won the B grade’s top award.
