Walkamin whisky best in the world SEVEN years of hard work has paid off for the Mt Uncle Distillery when it took top honours for their single malt Watkins Whiskey in the ‘12 Years and Under’ category at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards in London on February 8 and 9.

Based in Walkamin halfway between Mareeba and Atherton, Mark Watkins set up the Mt Uncle Distillery in 2001.

The Watkins Whiskey Co. single malt will now be considered for the prestigious title of the World’s Best Whiskey.

“It’s pretty much the Olympic Games of the whiskey

world,” distiller Mark Watkins said.

“Performing well here is epic for us, a great testament to the team and we’re stoked to put Walkamin on the map.”

The World Whiskies Awards is a prestigious competition held in London annually, where the best Whiskies from around the world compete to be crowned champion in their respective categories.

Everything from blended whiskies to limited edition single malts and world blends get their chance to shine as experts blind taste and score each one

across several rounds, with the final winner being announced in March.

In recent years, Mt Uncle Distillery has collected a swag of awards – their flagship product, the Mt Uncle Botanic Australis Gin has collected national and international medals; One day, Watkins was wandering the Tablelands looking for Botanics. A bushfire had recently happened, and some of the Botanics he had gathered were smoked. He decided to use them and ‘Bushfire’ Smoked Gin, Australia’s first-ever smoked gin, was borne. The

drink went on to win silver in the 2018 International Wine and Spirit Competition and is now sold at Dan Murphy’s.

LITTLE Nate Moule (pictured) has been battling hard for the past year and will continue to fight after another visit to Dr Charlie Teo in Sydney on Monday.

Nate, who has captured our hearts, has been under the care of world renowned neurosurgeon, Dr Teo who has operated on Nate numerous times since his diagnosis of a brain tumour in October 2018.

Nate underwent seven weeks of radiation therapy late last year to treat the tumour.

Nate had a follow up scan recently in Brisbane which revealed a reoccurrence of his tumour, Nate and his family flew down on Monday to see Dr Teo. Nates mother, Katie Moule has thanked the community for their unwavering support for Nate.

“Mareeba has been fantastic to us,” she said.

“They just keep helping and rallying around us.

“We want to thank everyone in the community.”

The Northern Pride hosted a trail match on Sunday in support of Nate, raising money for him and his family via gate takings.

Flying foxes send locals batty RESIDENTS are worried about thousands of Little Red flying foxes currently roosting in an area known as the Tolga Scrub about five minutes’ drive north of Atherton.

Councillor Owen Byrnes from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) said “The scrub is being destroyed; it won’t be long until the wait (sic) of hanging bats drag the trees onto the traffic lanes through the scrub.

Should an accident or incident occur due to failure to act, I for one do not want that on my conscience.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth agrees.

“Most councils have found it difficult, time-consuming and costly to meet State government department requirements to enable them to deal with issues concerning bats.”

“Normally the process in regards to management of bats is that Council are responsible for management and dispersal, however they do have to follow strict and onerous EPA guidelines set down by the state government.”

“This makes it extremely difficult for councils to gain approval to be able to properly manage bat populations,” he said.

Jennifer Mclean the Director of the Tolga Bat Hospital said that the Little Red Flying-foxes will move on when their food source runs out “there are currently flowering bloodwood eucalypts, the flowering will end soon and then the bats will move on.”

Water restrictions reminder THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) wants to remind everybody that level two water restrictions are still in place on the Tablelands.

According to the TRC “You can only use sprinklers and watering systems 6–7am and 6–7pm.

Apprentice opportunities THE Tablelands Regional Council has announced that eight new trainee and apprentice positions are now available.

“We’ve been fortunate to again receive funding to provide these opportunities in our workforce,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We’ll be offering 12-month traineeships in civil maintenance, community services and tourism, finance and knowledge and systems, horticulture, libraries, and a four-year plumbing apprenticeship.

The current TLPI will last for 2 years, meaning it will be inherited by the next council after the upcoming local elections on March 28. Mayor Gilmore also addresses the issue that no prior warning or consultation took place from the Ministers department prior to the TLPI being gazetted.

“Your action was ill-advised and based upon a seriously flawed document unfit for the purpose of advice to a Minister of the Crown. Further, your failure to offer me the opportunity

to provide a contrary opinion or to refute the detail of the document reinforces the view that the decision was rushed and that you may well have had an ulterior motive – that being the restriction of any development west of the range, which may have an impact on the carrying capacity of the Kuranda Range Road.”

The letter ends with “By way of interest, both Douglas Shire and Cairns Regional Council areas enjoy the privilege of 40 ha minimum lot sizes in rural areas; both of which comply with the Far North Queensland Regional Plan.”

The Ministers department has been contacted for comment.

The inquest wrapped up on Friday and the findings are expected to be delivered before the end of the year.

Ravenshoe inquest wraps up

AS the inquest into the June 2015 Ravenshoe tragedy continued last week, the wife of the deadly driver Mrs Scutt gave evidence, describing her husband’s stubborn attitude despite his ongoing medical issues.

Two people died in a fiery blast and a further 19 people were injured after Mr Scutt drove his four-wheel-drive into a Ravenshoe café, causing two gas containers to explode.

Mrs Scutt told the inquest she spoke to her husband several times about giving up driving, just days before the crash.

THE Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Tom Gilmore has sent a letter to the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, and Industry Cameron Dick, in relation to the temporary local planning instrument (TLPI) that was imposed on the MSC last year.

The involuntary TLPI was placed upon the MSC, making it nearly impossible for the council to subdivide land that is less than 60 hectares.

In the letter to the Minister, Mayor Tom Gilmore wrote.

Devastating insect found in Australia

A DEVASTATING invasive insect that has destroyed crops around the world has been detected in Australia for the first time.

The Fall armyworm has been found in the Torres Strait, prompting biosecurity alerts because of the potential to cause major damage to the agricultural industry.

In areas where the moth has taken hold, the destruction of crops has happened almost overnight.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the discovery of Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) showed just how critical it was

for everyone to play their role in protecting Queensland’s critical agricultural production and environment.

“Fall armyworm is an invasive moth pest that feeds in large numbers on more than 350 plant species, causing major damage to economically important cultivated grasses such as maize, rice, sorghum, sugarcane and wheat, and also to other horticultural crops and cotton,” Mr Furner said “At this stage, there's no detection of any crops that have been damaged,” he said.

posed a risk to crops.

“These moths mostly spread through natural means because they are strong fliers, but it is also important for our farmers for everyone to be aware of biosecurity and the potential to spread this and other pests,” Ms Lui said.

“These moths can fly up to 100 kilometres a night and are very destructive.”

Biosecurity Queensland's Malcolm Letts said specialised moth traps would be placed across Queensland to detect and contain any further spread of the pest.

“Destruction of crops can happen almost overnight when population levels are high," he said.

So far only six have been caught in traps on Erub and Saibai islands. They were captured in late January.

However, Mr Letts is concerned the pest could already

have migrated to mainland Australia.

“The traps are primarily used for surveillance purposes, so this is to actually try and find out how far this pest has spread at this point in time,” he said.

According to the Department of Primary Industries website “The Fall armyworm is native to tropical to sub-tropical areas of America. Initial detection in Africa in 2016 saw the fall armyworm spread to more than 30 countries over 3 years.

In 2018, the fall armyworm was detected in India and Sri Lanka.

In 2019 it had spread to Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, China and Indonesia. A suitable climate, trade and transport routes mean Australia could potentially face a high threat of Fall armyworm invasions originating from neighbouring and trading countries.”

“Banana plant regrowth is not permitted in a destruction zone on a farm infested with the disease, Mr Furner said.

“Drones are particularly useful for inspecting large areas of land or locations that are difficult to access.

“It’s important that the number of people going onto farms with Panama TR4 is minimised to reduce any risk of spreading the disease.

“Using a drone allows us to quickly map an area and take

detailed photos of the destruction zone. This eliminates the need for boots on the ground.

“If the drone detects any plant regrowth in a destruction zone, the grower is advised so they can remove the plants in accordance with strict biosecurity protocols.”

At the moment Panama TR4 is still being contained to 4 farms within the Tully valley Mr Furner said vigilance was the key to containing Panama TR4.

“It is great that the disease is still confined to just four farms within close proximity of each other after four years,” he said.

“I urge growers to maintain their efforts with on-farm biosecurity as it remains the best way to protect their farms from Panama TR4.”

New flight simulator to provide safer training

THE MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) Flight Centre at the Mareeba Airport has recently recieved a new Redbird Flight Simulator in honour of late member Larry Heintz and financed by his aunt Eva Shaver The new simulator was named in honour of Mr Heintz, who was in the flight safety department of the MAF and made a huge contribution to safety both within the organisation and out.

manitarian Aviation Recognition award due to his outstanding contribution towards humanitarian aviation activities and safety throughout air operations The simulator will be used to help teach and educate student pilots without exposing them to the dangers of the real aircraft until they are ready.

The new flight simulator also has dual control which allows instructors to demonstrate handling exercises and scenarios to

students, allowing them to see and feel the correct inputs before attempting it themselves.

MAF Operations manager Rene Don is extremely grateful for the donation and others that helped contribute to the new simulator.

“We rely a lot on donors to help us purchase equipment and maintain our aircraft and facilities,” he said.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who donates.

“These simulators are a great safety tool; allowing pilots to experience all the proper training without the danger.”

The new simulator is also presented in Mrs Shaver’s honour, whose generous gift in her will has enabled the purchase of this new system.

The previous system that was used at the facility has now been moved to Arnhem Land and will be used to better educate and train MAF Pilots.

FIFTEEN new apprentices, including five local boys, have begun their careers with Ergon Energy at their training facilities in Cairns.

Jett Fittock, Darcy Gillespie and Michael Hooper from the Tablelands have all begun their initial training in Cairns as a part of a recruiting drive where Ergon and Energex hired 102 new appren-

tices across Queensland.

Daniel Davidson from Mossman and Brendan Day from Georgetown were also hired and will be returning to their home depots after training in Cairns is finished.

27 women across the state have also begun apprenticeships with Ergon and Energex this year.

National Servicemen’s Day recognises fallen hero FORMER Tolga State School student Joseph Ramsay was honoured for his service in the Vietnam War on National Servicemen’s Day on the Tablelands.

Held on Sunday, February 9, at the Tolga Historicial Society and Musuem, Private Ramsay was honoured with the unveiling of the new Private Joseph Ramsay Memorial Vietnam Collection’ named in his honour.

Private Ramsay was killed

in action in the Vietnam war in 1969 and was a part of the 4RAR, the fourth battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment.

Private Ramsay’s youngest brother and niece were on hand to unveil the memorial plaque as well as old classmates and fellow Vietnam veterans.

Three former veterans that served in Australia’s National Service from 1951 to 1959 were also honoured with their families

receiving plaques.

The new collection is located in the new Lysaght Hut at the museum.

Hefty fines for illegal dumping MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is warning anyone who is caught illegally dumping will face hefty fines.

Recently a local resident was fined $2135 under the State Government’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Act (2011) after he was identified for illegally dumping waste on Chewko Road in Mareeba.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said illegal dumping will not be tolerated in the Shire. “We are very proud of our community and we want to keep the place looking tidy,” he said.

“Illegal dumping by its very nature is illegal and stupid, more particularly stupid when its free to deliver household waste to the transfer stations, with the exception of tyres and other prescribed items which incur a small fee.

“We have an arrangement in

place so residents can access the dump, free of charge, to eliminate people doing the wrong thing and disposing their rubbish illegally.

“It is a great shame to see

rubbish on the side of the roads, in creeks and in bushland,” he said.

THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY YOU NEED AN ENDURING POWER OF ATTORNEY The importance of an enduring power of attorney is often overlooked because people believe that their spouse or next of kin will be able to look after their affairs if they were to lose capacity. The truth is, it would be very difficult for your loved ones to deal with your affairs if they are not appointed as your attorney.

Let’s use the example of Jane and Tom: • Jane and Tom are in their mid 50’s.

• Tom works full-time and Jane works part-time.

• Jane and Tom own their family home jointly.

There is a mortgage over their property.

• Tom is involved in a car accident and suffers serious brain injuries. As a result, Tom is unable to make decisions for himself and requires care on a full time basis.

• Jane is unable to care for Tom on a full-time basis and cover the mortgage repayments.

Jane decides to sell the family home and move Tom into a care facility.

• Jane contacts a real estate agent to list the property, however the sale comes to a standstill when Jane encounters a problem; Jane and Tom do not have enduring powers of attorneys.

• As Jane is not appointed as Tom’s attorney, she is unable to sign the contract for sale or transfer documents on Tom’s behalf to effect the sale of the property.

The consequence of not having an enduring power of attorney in place means that an interested party (i.e. family member or friend) would need to make an application to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (“QCAT”) to be appointed as the administrator for financial matters and/or guardian for personal and health matters. So in the scenario above, Jane would need to make this application to have the power to sell their property. This process is stressful and can be costly.

If no one is willing to take on this responsibility then the Public Trustee and the Public Guardian may be appointed to take control of your affairs. There is also the risk of these statutory offices being appointed if there is a dispute between family members about who is the most appropriate person(s) to act.

The reality is, any person can unforeseeably lose their capacity at any time during their life. Wouldn’t you prefer to appoint someone who you trust to look after your affairs if this situation were to arise?

If you would like to avoid this problem for relatively little time and money, please do not hesitate to contact us to set up your enduring power of attorney.

Ootann Road needs to be a big priority Horticulture has been identified as contributing $528 million to our Tablelands economy, these are exciting numbers for our agricultural industry. This industry, in my opinion, is like a mini mining boom but with a longer outlook.

I have worked in towns that have experienced a mining boom and there was not one person who didn’t reap the rewards that it brought to those towns.

This farming boom can only be supported if – 1, we can keep our water supply up and meet demands into the future and 2, we can get our produce to the big markets.

The Kuranda Range is a political battlefield with no solution in sight, but we need to remember that there is another route west of Dimbulah that could have greater potential to link our region with southern markets.

The Ootann Road links the Burke Development Road with the Kennedy, Gregory and Hann Highways south. This road allows road trains to stay connected and head south. Currently our produce trucks take single and small A trailers between Mareeba and Mt Garnet at a huge time and financial burden for growers and consumers. The full development of the Ootann Road would allow produce carrying road trains to stay connected from the Mareeba Industrial Park right through.

This would not only save a lot of time but also decrease the cost of transport. Currently the cost of horticulture produce from the Tablelands is 16% higher due to extra freight costs to get to southern markets.

Fortunately the Mareeba Shire Council has been able to start work on a small section of the Ootann Road, but we really need the support of the State and Federal governments to make this an all weather road.

A future Mareeba Shire Council should have this road as a big priority for upcoming funding submissions. If elected to Council, I will be championing this as soon as possible.

In reply to Cr Mellick’s letter

It is my opinion that I must reply to councillor Spies, now Mellick, comments in The Express on February 5, 2020.

A poor tradesman blames his tools and week leaders blame others. This council has had the opportunity to rectify tenders into open session and any other matters that could have and should have been repealed and replaced.

I believe the previous council handed over a surplus not deficit. Just remember this council is now receiving more revenue from rates, utilities, fees and charges than ever before in history and the majority of councillors believe it is acceptable to charge more and do less. Such as support a policy to provide no maintenance to some properties past the second last driveway on a rural road.

Maybe we should reflect on some of the legacy issues left from this council.

1. What is the real cost of employing a CEO with no local gov experience who needed to resign.

2. What is the real cost of awarding a renovation to someone outside the shire when a reputable and capable local rate payer offered a favourable solution.

3. What is the real cost of sorting the mistake in the rates debacle.

4. What is the real cost of building a TRC enterprise company that does all its discussion behind closed doors and needs to come out and show a result for the hundreds of thousands

5. What is the cost for doing concept drawings for unaffordable buildings .

This councils untraditional experiments have been expensive and we need to get back to basics. don’t preach legacies to me.

Why I’m standing as an independent for MSC Mayor

I announced in November 2019 that I was running as an independent for Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council in the March elections, since that time I been fielding questions about why I have chosen to stand as an independent rather than part of a team.

My position, is not a commentary on, or reflection of the caliber, or motivation of the candidates for this current election. My belief is based on years of communicating, negotiating, and working with different stakeholders, and interested invested parties, in the day to day operations of large organisations such as Cairns State High, the largest public high school in the north, and Mareeba State High School as an example of a diverse institution in our shire.

I have been a councillor with the Mareeba Council for the past four years and am passionate about transparency, honesty, governance and ethical management.

As an educational leader with 40+ years experience, I am skilled in negotiation, administration and liaising with various government stakeholders and delegations for the best outcomes for the region.

My reasons for standing as an independent candidate for

mayor in the March elections for Mareeba Shire is that the shire is a growing electorate, with a population of nearly 22,000, we have attracted people from all walks of life; people choose to live in the region for vastly different reasons, they have different goals and plans, the way they live, their life-styles, ideas on how things should be done and dreams for the future vary dramatically.

We are by no means “a one size fits all” shire – it’s because of this diversity that it is important that our councillors and mayor represent the broad array, and grassroot beliefs and values of all of our residents.

I am mindful of when politicians stand as a team, there is a perception that those candidates agree, to an extent, to a “party” or “united” line or policy and “occasionally the interests of our constituents get lost in the rationales of the team.”

As a Mareeba-ite, I believe it is vital for the ongoing success, strength and growth of our community and the shire that all councillors feel able to accurately and adequately address and advocate for their residents without pressure or presumption that they should think or vote a particular way.

As mayor I have said that I would love to work with a council and councillors elected by our residents, who, represent and are invested in our differences, our diversity and our strengths. Certainly this stance seems to be supported by local voters with over 3,000 hits, in less than 24 hours, on my post outlining my position on social media last week.

Why are people going batty?

I HAVE some breaking news for you, there are bats living in Far North Queensland.

At the moment there’s a large colony of them roosting in an area known as the Tolga scrub.

Recently I received an email from Owen Byrnes Councillor at the Tablelands Regional Council.

“There is along (sic) history with the bat problem in North Queensland, The fact of the matter is it’s a EPA issue control by the state (sic) and this is why I have asked Shane Knuth for assistance, I believe common sense needs to prevail, In my opinion the bats are in plaque (sic) proportion and something needs to be done, it’s a health risk to humans and livestock, the scrub is being destroyed, it won’t be long until the wait (sic)

of hanging Bats drag the trees onto the traffic lanes through the scrub. Should a accident or incident occur due to failure to act I for one do not want that on my conscience.”

I also received a statment from Shane Knuth the Member for Hill.

“Normally the process in regards to management of bats is that Council are responsible for management and dispersal, however they do have to follow strict and onerous EPA guidelines set down by the state government.

“This makes it extremely difficult for councils to gain approval to be able to properly manage bat populations.”

I hate to tell Shane and Owen but the bats were here first. In fact there’s evidence that the

bats were here before Aboriginal people arrived.

I would rather see our elected officials spending more time controlling feral cats, Myna birds and cane toads.

Also in breaking news all native Australian animals including bats are protected. You can’t choose to live on the Tablelands, saying you want to get away from the smoke, the noise and the traffic of the cities and then say, let’s kill the animals that get in the way.

According to the Director of the Tolga Bat Hospital Jennifer Mclean the bats provide an invaluable service.

“They’re the only animals that can pollinate on a huge scale. Pollination is the beginning of trees reproducing; it’s the most important service that

they provide. These animals restore the country after bushfires.

Flying foxes are able to restore up to 90 per cent of the restoration of the burnt eucalypts.”

“There’s no other animal that can pollinate on such a large scale. They arrive in numbers in relation to the amount of food that is here. There’s currently flowering bloodwood eucalypts and they will leave as soon as the nectar is finished. “ Both The Department of Environment and Science and Ms Mclean have said the bats will move on soon.

There have been complaints from residents that the noise from the bats is deafening and that the bats \are destroying the scrub. Their solution? Cut down or trim the trees.

The hypocrisy is deafening.

Drink Driving, Atherton Police have charged a 37-yearold Tolga man after a traffic intercept in Atherton on Friday evening, February 7.

The man was intercepted on the Kennedy Highway at about 9.15pm where he allegedly returned a reading of 0.130 per cent BAC. The man was also issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice (TIN) for driving a vehicle not under the direction of a qualified person after the man provided a Learner Licence. He was issued a TIN for $213 and four demerit points.

He is expected to appear in Atherton Magistrates Court on March 3, charged with drink driving.

Trespass and wilful damage, Mareeba Police have charged two local girls after several incidents on Saturday evening, February 8 in Mareeba.

It’s alleged that the 15-yearold Mareeba girls attended a residence on Basalt Street at about 10.50pm and caused damage to the side of the house and smashed a window of the residence.

It will further be alleged that the girls then attended a unit block on Walsh Street at about 1.50am and attempted to steal a wallet and phone from one unit before entering another, causing

damage to property before being arrested.

Both girls will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 1992.

Drug charges, Atherton Police have charged a 28-yearold Almaden woman after a traffic intercept in Atherton on Sunday morning, February 9.

It’s alleged the woman was observed driving a vehicle on the Kennedy Highway at about 1.20am with registration plates that did not match the vehicle description, and that the vehicle was also subject to an immobilisation period.

It’s also alleged that when detained and spoken to, police located a clip seal bag of Methylamphetamine in the vehicle.

The woman is expected to appear in Atherton Magistrates Court on March 10, charged with one count each of possession of dangerous drugs, operating a vehicle during a number plate confiscation period and driving with false plates.

Stolen pushbikes, Mareeba Police are investigating after two pushbikes were stolen from a residence in Mareeba on Sunday morning (February 9).

MAREEBA HISTORY UPDATE CAN anyone remind me of how many years it is since Australia changed from pounds, shillings and pence (£,s, p) to decimal dollars and cents ($ c)?. I know it happened in February.

Going back even further, much further, to about 1928 and the Mareeba Hydro Electric Scheme was proposed – Bourke Falls v Barron Falls.

APRIL 1928 The chairmen of the Woothakata Shire Council presented the data which had been obtained in regards to the Bourke Falls on the Barron River ten miles above Mareeba, and a report and tentative estimate of the cost of installing an electric generating plant which he recommended should be placed before the treasury with a request for investigation of the proposal by an engineer with a view to making a loan available for carrying out the work.

08/01/1931 The chairman moved that application be made for permission to borrow from the Treasury, or by issuing debenture, a sum not exceeding £1,400/-/- ($2,800) for the purpose of preparing work plans, specifications and estimates for

installation of a Hydro Electric undertaking at Bourke Falls on the Barron River.

The Chairman moved that application be made for permission to borrow by issuing debentures, a sum not exceeding £40,000/-/($80,000) for construction of a Hydro Electric undertaking at Bourke Falls on the Barron River, also for construction of transmission lines to Mareeba and Tolga and reticulation of the town of Mareeba for the supply of electricity for lighting and industrial purposes.

08/10/1931 Mareeba Hydro Electric Scheme. Letters were received from Mr. A.E. Harding Frew with reference to his visit to Mareeba in connection with his surveys for the above scheme. Also a letter from the Department of Public Works advising that it been arranged for Mr. Grier of the department to visit Mareeba in connection with the scheme at a time to co-incide with Mr. Frew’s visit. The Chairman said that Mr Harding Frew and his engineer Mr. Baldwin, also Mr. Grier arrived at Mareeba Wednesday morning and he and the Clerk had accompanied them on a preliminary visit

of inspection of Bourke Falls.

In 1932 approval for the Mareeba Hydro Electric Scheme had not been obtained and at the same meeting attention was drawn to a Cairns Post report on the opposing scheme.

1936 The Barron Falls Hydro Board wrote giving notice of intention to supply electricity within the township of Mareeba as from noon on 17th July, 1936 The Bourke Falls scheme most likely did not go head because of the lack of support from the government. Mareeba missed out again.

Further, your failure to offer me the opportunity to provide a contrary opinion or to refute the detail of the document reinforces the view that the decision was rushed and that you may well have had an ulterior motive - that being the restriction of any development west of the range, which may have an impact on the carrying capacity of the Kuranda Range Road.

The facts of the matter follow: The Statement of Reasons, details five (5) approvals given since April 2018 as the basis for the decision.

The Reever and Ocean Pty Ltd subdivision (5 into 49 lots) in Kuranda was properly made under the superseded 2004 Planning Scheme. It was assessed under the Code established by the State Governments Regional Plan which was specifically included in the MSC Planning Scheme as a requirement of the State at the time. Council approved the application as it could be conditioned to meet the Code, as required by the Planning Act. You claim in your Statement of Reasons that no less than 80 complainants urged you to call in this application and to refuse it. You failed to do so, as it was clear that there was no justification for such action. Your charge that the Council was at fault in this matter, given your failure as a Minister to deal with the matter is folly and gives cause to question the substance and the motivation of the entire Statement of Reasons.

The Reid subdivision (1 into 2 lots) was a small 5.16 hectare lot bounded by low density Residential lots on three sides and Rural Residential to its north east. Even in its full size it was too small for agricultural use and the area is essentially used for Rural Residential purposes.

The Dixon subdivision (1 into 2 lots) again was a small lot, 3.5 hectares, that had an existing approval for commercial use, was surrounded by small lots and could in no way be identified as good quality agricultural land. To subdivide it into two lots would have no impact on any agricultural endeavours.

There has been reference to the 17 subdivisions approved by Council prior to your April 2018 letter. I will not detail what the basis of our decision was for all of these however if you look at each one you will find that in each case there was justification for the approval.

In these cases, the following factors will be found: There was a practical division already in place i.e.: a road or creek, and/or; The land could not be classed as good agricultural land and/or; The original lot was already smaller than the 60 hectares and/or; The lots were in close proximity to existing rural residential lots.

Council is very cognisant of the need to preserve good agricultural land. Agriculture is the main economic driving force of the Shire's economy and will not be compromised by Council.

Agriculture has been established in the region for over a century and all the productive land is being used to its full potential.

The Mareeba Shire Council covers an area of 53,000 km; the vast majority of which is zoned rural and those areas of land suitable for agriculture have long since been developed and settled. Council has been careful to limit subdivision activity to land areas unsuited to agriculture and convenient to the changing needs of our growing community.

There have been numerous occasions when land owners have been advised not to lodge applications as Council will not approve them as they would see the fragmentation of viable agricultural land or may impact on agricultural production. When on occasion these individuals have persisted and have lodged applications in spite of advice, they have been refused. The attached refusal decision notices are several examples showing Council's strong commitment to the protection of agricultural land.

Regrettably your Statement of Reasons indicates that neither you; nor your advisor has any clear understanding of the land form, the geography or the community of the Mareeba Shire Council.

Neither do you have any understanding of historical settlement patterns or the changing demographic profile of our community. This lack of basic understanding reinforces our deep concern about what is considered to be a most unfortunate attack on the integrity of our Council.

As Councillors, we are long term residents of the Shire, well aware of the importance of our agricultural base which we will never place in jeopardy. Your decision to impose the TLPI on our planning scheme is a blunt instrument, applied for the wrong purpose and designed to correct a problem which does not exist. It will have a negative impact on the development of our Shire for years to come.

I will be travelling to Brisbane and will be available to meet with you in person on either the afternoon of the 24th February or the morning of the 25th and in the event that such a meeting is not possible, I offer an invitation for you to visit in person and I will personally offer you a Cook's tour of those areas of which you express concern so that we might enter into a rational discussion, with a view to withdrawal of the TLPI. Following the match, the Roosters are at home for further trials against the Mareeba Gladiators on March 14 and the Byron Bay Red Devils on March 21.

Preparation for 2020 has been strong for the Roosters with the club looking to continue their 2019 form in which all grades played in the end of season finals.

The first grade side went one game short of a 2019 grand final spot and that has already fired this years group towards a 2020 premiership crown.

With the bulk of last year’s side retained and many youngsters rising through the ranks, the Roosters will be confident for the year ahead. Several of the local young guns were blooded

in the top grade during last season and with a few new faces signing the player mixture and depth will be solid in season 102 for the Roosters.

Former Sunshine Coast Falcons prop forward Mitch Ebdon has relocated to Atherton and 2019 Wagga Wagga Kangaroos captain/coach Glenn Dumbrell is another new face. Speedsters Viliame Mataki and Ratu Mocevakaca arrive from Fiji to join the club in early March.

In other news, the Senior Roosters are turning back the clock forty years and will play 2020 in their traditional jersey which will feature the famous red, white and blue colours in the old style design. This original jersey was part of many great moments for the club during the 1970’s.

The Senior Roosters host Ivanhoes in the Cairns District Rugby League’s opening 2020 premiership match on April 4.

The Mareeba junior Bulls kicked off training last week at Mareeba United Football Club. Training is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.15pm to 6pm and everyone is welcome to come along, sign up and play the game in 2020.

Tablelands soccer looking for new horizons JUST like the Socceroos who have expanded their horizons by being selected to participate in the 2020 Copa América, Tableland players can expand theirs and see where the world game can take them.

The local Tableland Junior Soccer Association (TJSA) competition will commence on Saturday, March 21 where children from all over the Tablelands have the opportunity to play the world game with their local clubs and have fun with friends old and new.

The TJSA is also looking to expand the diversity of its competition by hosting an inaugural soccer tournament day on August 2, where teams from all over the FNQ region can participate in a full day of games.

“It’s a great way for our younger teams to experience

games against clubs they normally would not play against,” said TJSA president Edward Balzarolo.

There will also be opportunities throughout the year where Tableland clubs can participate in other club’s soccer tournaments.

Clubs based in Dimbulah, Atherton, Malanda and the newly formed Ravenshoe Raiders participate in the TJSA competition in which players train and compete locally. This year will also see an exciting opportunity for U12 and U13/14 players as they take on teams from the Cairns competition.

All Tableland clubs will be trying their hardest to see if they can emulate the Malanda U 13/14 team from 2019 which went on to win the TJSA premiership and also the FNQ Foot-

ball finals series in Cairns.

The local competition offers game-time for both boys and girls to play in age groups from Under-6 up to Under 15. Most clubs also offer fun sessions during training times for children aged 4-5 where pre-schoolers can practice basic skills. Older players are encouraged to contact their local club to enquire about joining the youth team or senior men’s team where in some cases, training has already begun.

TJSA president, Edward Balzarolo is keen to welcome all new and returning players to the Tableland competition.

“Clubs throughout the TJSA value everyone’s participation in soccer because it provides a fun and healthy way to participate in our community life,” he said.

Swimmers smash sprints

CHAMPIONS: Liam Newlands, Reuben Young, David Eade, Stephen Young, Charlotte Soda, Esta Cousley, Kiara Ramscar all made qualifying times for the RMHC Sprint Championships on the weekend.

THREE swimmers from the Mareeba Wildcats club have returned home after competing in a swimming championship on the Gold Coast over the weekend The RHMC (Ronald McDonald House Charities) QLD Sprint Championships is a swimming competition held on the Gold Coast every year and sees swimmers competing against some of the best in the country.

Out of the 11 qualified swimmers from Mareeba, only three

were able to go due to the late notice of their qualifications.

David Eade, Reuben Young and Stephen Young were the three swimmers that were able to go and compete in the championships.

David and Stephen qualified for the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly while Reuben qualified for backstroke.

Over the nine events that the Mareeba Wildcats swimmers participated in there were eight

new personal bests with a swimming success rate of 99 per cent.

David Eade made all four finals for his swimming events and took home three ribbons. All swimmers smashed their personal bests with some strokes being beaten by over two seconds.

With the Mareeba Pool being closed, many of the swimmers had minimal training time in order to compete and get the required qualifying times, with some swimmers qualifying at

the recent Atherton Carnival this earlier month.

Mareeba Wildcats coach, June Cotter, has been taking swimmers away to the championships for 25 years with this being one of her biggest qualifying groups.

“Considering they only had a few months in the water, for that many to qualify is outstanding,” she said.

“The qualifying times are quite difficult to get so it’s great to see so many swimmers qualify.

“I am extremely happy with how our swimmers preformed, I cannot argue with a 99 per cent success rate.”

Mareeba Wildcats swimmer David Eade has established a lot of records at the Sprint Championships for multiclass over the years and continues to impress.

David was looking forward to competing and was confident that he would post good times for the Championship.

“I was really excited and looking forward to be competing again,” he said.

“I’ve been training twice a day, seven days a week for several months now so I’m in good condition. “I was ready to go and eager to get in the water.”

Atherton in top spot after cup win Dan Parnell took four wickets for Atherton on Saturday.

ATHERTON put in a dominant performance on Saturday to reclaim both the Bridgeman-

Maher Cup and top-spot on the Cricket Far North 1-Day points ladder.

In what will be a tightly run race to the finals, Atherton have assured themselves a spot in the top three, leaving Rovers, Barron and Norths to fight it out for the remaining two finals positons.

Chris Adams followed up his last innings century top-scoring with 44, while opening partner, allrounder Dan Parnell put on 38 runs. Their opening 80 run partnership was crucial in setting up the victory. Mason Blaney supported with 22 and Paul Nasser blasted 41 off 21 in a handy 54 run partnership with Tom Boorman.

Atherton posted 204 in 34 overs, with the match reduced to 35 overs due to extreme heat conditions.

Spinners Dan Parnell and

Michael Salerno found something in the wicket claiming 4-10 and 4-8 respectively off their allotted seven overs to demoralise the opposition. Seppe Barletta and Caleb Constant chipped in with a wicket each.

Last season's Premiers were dismissed for 62 in the twentythird over giving Atherton a record 142 run win and a valuable two bonus points.

The Bridgeman-Maher Cup is contested annually in a 1-day format match to celebrate two of the club's toughest competitors in Darryl Bridgeman and Tom Maher and the long competitive history between the two clubs.

Introduced in 2014-15 season, the score now stands at 2-2 with 2 wash-outs.

Next match for Atherton is against Cassowary Coast this Saturday at Tully’s Miller Oval.

Scorching weekend sees cricket success

IN a scorching weekend, Mareeba Cricket has seen victories all around for their senior divisions with both second grade and third grade winning their respective games.

Mareeba Seconds faced Barron on their home turf in Trinity Beach where they won the toss and sent Barron into the field in the heat of the day.

Mareeba took an early blow with one of their openers falling after three balls, Brendan Falvo looked to steady the ship with some support from the third and fourth batters, posting 80 runs before being run out.

Some middle to lower order collapses saw Mareeba in a tough spot but they managed to post a decent score of 168 before the close of innings.

A tough battle ensued with Barron working hard on chasing down Mareeba’s total, Mareeba showcased some good bowling and ended up getting Barron all out for 123 off 29.5 overs.

Tyson Brown took two wickets, Leonard Hodges took two and Brett Stallan took three with the rest of the wickets being spread out.

Mareeba thirds also had a win and now sit at the top of the table.

Mareeba was sent in to field in hot conditions and looked to make an early dent in the Barron batting line-up.

Opening bowler Brendan Johns took an early wicket to set the pace for Mareeba but Barron hunkered down and spread the runs around to get their total to 142 runs at the close of innings.

Mareeba got off to a good start with Zac McBurnie hitting some boundaries to shake Barron’s bowling, but was out quickly.

Opener Angus Campman and No 3 batsman Rhys Thomas created a partnership and pushed Mareeba close to the finish line with Rhys getting 44 runs off 42 balls, helping to propel Mareeba just 40 runs shy of their target.

Things were looking up but some lower order collapses saw Mareeba sweating with just 10 runs to get off the last two overs with two wickets left in the shed.

Brendan Johns took it upon himself and smashed two boundaries bringing Mareeba to a close win, finishing on 8/144.
