Nate battles on ONE’S strength and resolve required to live with such a debilitating disease like a brain tumour is something to be admired.

Nate Moule, 2, is one such boy who has had to suffer through the everyday struggles of the disease, specifically a genetic embryonic brain tumour.

Nate, originally from Mareeba, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour on October 31, 2018, and was immediately flown to Brisbane to receive treatment.

He was operated on in Brisbane and had 95% of the tumour removed.

Following his operation, he was recommended to undergo Chemotherapy; however Nate’s mother Katie chose to go a different route.

“After doing extensive research, we decided to go to Sydney and receive treatment from world-renowned neurosurgeon Charlie Teo,” Ms Moule said.

“He’s one of the best doctors in Australia and he operated on Nate a fortnight ago.

“Nate’s procedure was a radical resection, which consisted of removing the remainder of the tumour along with some of the healthy brain tissue surrounding it.”

The operation was a resounding success, with the post MRI results showing the tumour is gone.

“There has been no spreading of the tumour to his brain or spinal fluid,” she said.

“We know it’s not over yet, but it’s the best start we could’ve asked for.”

Since the operation, Nate and his family have returned to Mareeba, where they will remain for six weeks before re-

turning to Dr Teo on February 20 for a check-up.

“The check-up will include an MRI scan and a plan of which treatment path we may need to go down for Nate,” Ms Moule said.

Nate’s young life has been riddled with medical issues, of which included having to be resuscitated at just three days old.

“He has had a really rough journey,” she said.

“Nate is an extremely strong boy; his resilience he has maintained throughout his life is unbelievable.”

Nate’s journey since his diagnosis has been documented on the ‘Nate’s Mates’ Facebook page and Ms Moule said the response from the Mareeba community has been astounding.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mareeba community, their support has been amazing and we couldn’t have gone through this without their help,” she said.

“People always say how the Mareeba community lend a hand when someone is in need, and this experience has definitely shown that.”

Camphor laurels cut along Mary Street MALANDA’S Mary Street looked very different last Wednesday as the Tablelands Regional Council removed the street’s 13 Camphor laurel trees.

The decision was one that was met with months of opposition

from local protestors; however TRC noted that although it was a tough decision, it was necessary.

The Camphor laurel trees had stood along Mary Street for the better part of 94 years, and were deemed too unsafe after an exten-

sive independent arborist report.

The stumps of the Camphor laurel trees that remain will be removed once roadworks commence which are scheduled for April.

TRC are currently brain-

storming ideas on how to repurpose and reuse the wood from the trees.

With the Mary Street Project incorporating plans to replant another tree species, members of the public are encouraged to have

their say via a survey.

Aero club flying high

THE North Queensland Aero Club have added to their stellar reputation after they were recently awarded Aero Club of the Year.

The nation-wide award, which is courtesy of the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society in conjunction with the Australian Flying Magazine, judge candidates across a variety of extensive criteria including standards of safety, contribution to the industry’s growth, innovative value to the industry among others.

The North Queensland Aero Club were presented their award last Friday night, with club patrons and key members of the aviation industry in attendance to celebrate the historic milestone for the storied club.

North Queensland Aero Club President Bill Owen said to be awarded Aero Club of the Year is a fantastic accolade.

“This is the first time we’ve won it, and not only is it great for the club, but also for Mareeba and the Tablelands, as it puts the region on the map as far as flying training and aero clubs are concerned,” he said.

“Winning this award wasn’t something we initially expected – it was when we sat down and started writing our responses to the selection criteria that we knew we were in with a good shot.”

Mr Owen said he believes a

major reason behind the club winning the award was due to the major changes they have seen in recent years.

“I think our successful relocation from Cairns to Mareeba really stood out to those who were judging this award,” he said.

“There were a lot of innovative practices we had to adopt to coincide with the move, which I believe boded well for us throughout the judging process.”

Mr Owen also took time to thank integral members of the NQ Aero Club team.

“Firstly I would like to thank a current patron Ray Fry, who has been with the club for over 30 years; whenever the place isn’t going well, he has always come along with his hand in his pocket and helped the club immensely,” he said.

“Secondly I would like to acknowledge Chief Flying Instructor Sally Scott, she has been with the club for the better part of two decades. She’s an unbelievably dedicated employee and her commitment to the club is second to none.

“Stalwarts such as Ray and Sally are big reasons as to why this club is as successful as it is.”

“It would be fantastic if we could model what they have and implement it across Australia.”

Throughout the presentation, there weren’t too many people who received more praise than the club’s Chief Pilot and Chief Flying Instructor Sally Scott.

Ms Scott said the appreciation and respect she is given from fel-

low colleagues and members of the aviation industry is very flattering.

“It means a lot,” she said.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the people who came before me – I am always provided great support and this club is like my second home.

Ms Scott said winning the award is a huge pat on the back

for the club.

“It’s very hard running a notfor-profit organisation like an aero club, especially in a difficult aviation environment and there’s a lot of hard work that goes into keeping it successful,” she said.

“So to see that it has paid off in the form of Aero Club of the Year is fantastic.”

Member for Cook speaks on office move Member for Cook’s decision to move her electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns has been a strong talking point within the community in recent weeks, and she has taken the opportunity to address the situation head-on.

Ms Lui said she welcomes the opportunity to elaborate on the necessity to relocate her electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns and assure the Mareeba community that their representation in our State Parliament will not be compromised.

“I acknowledge that Mareeba is the largest urban centre in Far North Queensland outside of Cairns,” she said.

“However, Mareeba is part of a very large and diverse electorate that is not typical of any other electorate in Queensland.

“The Cook electorate consists of: 14 Local Governments and one Town Authority; 33 remote

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities; and 6 townships (Thursday Island, Weipa, Cooktown, Mossman, Port Douglas and Mareeba).”

Ms Lui said her decision to relocate the office to Cairns is based on the fact that the Electorate Office in Mareeba is simply not accessible to the people of Cook.

“In the 12 months since being elected, I have not had a single person from any of the communities listed above stop into my office in Mareeba to discuss issues with myself or my staff,” she said.

“I have made every effort to invite constituents to meet me in Mareeba and I can tell you that only one person kindly offered to do so, as a matter of convenience being a resident of Atherton and works in Cairns.”

Ms Lui said since being elected, she has made many allowances for constituents outside of

Mareeba by making herself available to meet in Cairns.

“Initially, I offered to meet individuals at their preferred venue but this was taking up valuable time travelling between meetings,” she said.

“The Member for Cairns kindly offered the use of his conference room to meet with constituent issues and my office managed this by getting all constituent appointments for Cairns scheduled on the same day based on my availability.

“However, this was a huge disadvantage for constituents visiting Cairns for business and personal matters and not being able to access the office for their local member.”

Ms Lui said the amount of meetings she had in Cairns last year shows that Cairns is undoubtedly the Central Hub for Far North Queensland.

“I have had many calls from community leaders and people to have an office space in Cairns that is readily accessible to every single person and my capacity to conduct mobile offices in communities outside of Mareeba and the Douglas Shire is very limited,” she said.

“My decision to relocate the office is based on fairness and equality. I am in this position for a reason and I have a responsibility to all communities and people in my electorate.

“I will honour my commitment to the Mareeba community by conducting regular mobile offices in the Shire.”

THOSE who disapprove of the KUR-World development had their last chance to voice their opposition to the Queensland Coordinator-General as ‘Have Your Say’ submissions officially closed last Monday.

Their final submission consisted of a one hour video where members of the public expressed the negative impacts they believe the proposal will have on the region’s environment, infrastructure, and community as a whole.

In the video submission,

KUR-Alert President Steven Nowakowski said the KURWorld project is far too big and in the wrong place.

“This is going to have a huge fundamental impact on Kuranda, the Tablelands and to even some degree Cairns,” he said.

“It is going to turn Kuranda and Myola into a little piece of Macau.

“The whole development should be scrapped - on the issues that there has been next to no public consultation, along with no economic valuation on

the impact it will have on the local business owners, tourism operators and residents.”

Mr Nowakowski also alluded to the environmental impact, noting that Kuranda is home to an array of unique species, of which the KUR-World development will be impeding on.

Another Kuranda resident stated in the video submission that it’s very sad that the biggest development proposed for Kuranda is so inappropriate.

“It will be so wrong if it goes ahead,” he said.

“It will destroy the environment and change the character of Kuranda in a negative way forever.”

Their message was bolstered by a visit from Queensland Senator Larissa Waters last week, who joined in the fight to thwart the development.

KUR-World is a development which has garnered passionate debate amongst residents throughout the Far North since the inception of the proposal, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing.

New after-hours service to launch

The region will soon be home to a new after-hours health care service with the launch of a general practitioner and telehealth service ‘Call My Doctor’ in February this year.

Call My Doctor, which is funded by Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), will provide residents with 100 per cent bulk billed after-hours in-home GP consultations and pay for telehealth services.

By calling 13 47 11, patients will have access to a trained team of nurses and health professionals, where non-urgent and nonlife-threatening situations will be booked in for an in-home consultation.

Call My Doctor Partner Lindsay Stewart said the Call My Doctor team are looking forward to working in collaboration with NQPHN to provide these muchneeded services to the community.

“Our goal is to increase the access and availability of afterhours and home-visiting healthcare services, especially in rural, remote, and indigenous communities,” he said.

“Call My Doctor has contracted fully qualified GPs for inhome consultations, with the capability to also provide telehealth services.

“Our telehealth service allows patients to phone or video link directly to one of our doctors and will also be able to receive their scripts from our partner pharmacy as required.

“We have received interest from doctors throughout the region, however we still have positions available and hopefully we’ll have them filled very soon.”

The Tablelands region has seen services comparable to Call My Doctor be unsuccessful in recent years, however Mr Stewart is firmly of the belief that this business model is built to last.

“We will make sure we cement the market before we go to market,” he said.

“We have no issue waiting a

couple of extra weeks to ensure the business has continuity and fluidity.

“We have the support from the government, now it’s about having the support from the medical fraternity and the doctors.”

Mr Stewart said doctors will be paid a guaranteed $175 an hour.

“That hourly rate is unheard of in the after-hours sector,” he said.

“It’s not all about money, but if we can get doctors to come along and do one or two shifts a week, we’ll have this service up and running as soon as possible.”

NQPHN Mareeba Primary Healthcare Manager Elisa Capaldi said the service aims to improve after-hours services and access to primary health care and assist in reducing unnecessary Emergency Department (ED) presentations across the region.

“NQPHN is looking forward

to working with Call My Doctor to improve healthcare capabilities and services in Mareeba and Tablelands that can be sustained into the future,” she said.

“Patients and community members are still urged to call their regular GP in the first instance to seek advice of their treatment options, however if this is not an option, an afterhours doctor should be their next step.

“In non-urgent and non-life threatening cases, an after-hour GP service such as Call My Doctor would be a timely and appropriate option, easing the pressure on EDs so they can concentrate on caring for people with more serious conditions.”

When operational, Call My Doctor’s hours will be from 6pm8am Monday to Friday, from 12pm on Saturdays, and 24 hours on Sundays and public holidays.

Mango season provides challenges

THE mango season is coming to a close for yet another year, and it has been one filled with peaks and troughs as farmers have had to battle inclement weather.

“This season has finished a lot earlier than previous years because of the intense heatwave we had in late November,” Biboohra mango farmer Joe Moro said.

“Due to the heat, it brought the season forward and we had a lot of mangoes harvested before Christmas, particularly the Kens-

ington Prides.”

Mr Moro said the heatwave late last year coupled with the extensive rain that fell throughout the region last month meant for a tougher season than normal - however it is not all bad news.

“From a logistical point of view, the season went pretty well,” he said.

“In saying that though, the inclement weather knocked us around a bit and provided us with many challenges.

“We were fortunate to have a good supply of workers including both backpackers and students which really helped this season.”

Mr Moro said there are still some late varieties being picked.

“There are still some Calypsos coming out of Dimbulah, as well as Pearls and Keitts that are coming through,” he said.

“So with all of that I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a similar volume to last season.”

THERE is only one week left to for farmers to place their mango nominations for The Express’ and Lindsay Australia’s KP Mango Competition. Chairman of the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club’s Management Committee Ray McCarthy said the proposal signals a very exciting time for both the town and the bowls club.

“Firstly, this is great news for the bowls club,” he said.

“We’ve been looking for the last couple of years as to where we are going in the future, and this is certainly the best opportunity we’ve had so far and we’re thoroughly working towards it.”

Mr McCarthy said there are positives and negatives to every development; however he is of the belief that the new community hub will provide an important service to a growing area of

Mareeba.

“The eastern side of town is the growth area at the moment, and with the enormous traffic footprint that passes through Anzac Avenue every day, the opportunities are limitless,” he said.

“The current site’s facilities are underutilised as some people aren’t quite sure what is out there, however with a community hub that provides a variety of services, I think you’ll start to see a new and healthy clientele.

“I understand there have been concerns raised as it relates to the library being out of town, but I think it being a part of a greater community centre will be very beneficial for library-goers.”

Mr McCarthy said he has

been in correspondence with Council extensively in recent months, and was quick to laud their professionalism.

“I have been extremely impressed with MSC throughout this entire process,” he said.

“Every Council officer I’ve dealt with, from the CEO Peter Franks down, has been thorough and transparent and they have handled everything with great efficiency.”

Despite the Council’s announcement of the plans only being made public recently, the magnitude of this development is sure to remain a talking point within the community for some time.

The entertaining and educational series teaching you how to become better communicators for better relationships in community/business/family and will be back on the Tablelands with another public workshop on Saturday, February 2.

Considered Conversations is the brainchild of a very brainy and somewhat eccentric scientist who has determined that whole communities can experience new levels of harmony and productivity if each individual learns a few rather unusual methods for improving communications.

Allan Parker is a micro-behavioural scientist and inventor of an amazing program for improving organisations and

communities through teaching changes in micro-behaviours.

His new focus is improving communication and social cohesion in community – and he has picked the Tablelands community for his first research project working with an entire community.

What exactly is a micro-behaviour? In Mr Parker’s words – “Micro behaviours are the “little things’ we do (or don’t do),

that either irritate or delight us.

Like putting things back where they belong, saying ‘sorry’, or ‘Yes, please?’, or ‘May I interrupt’ rather than cutting you off mid-sentence. Asking a clarifying question, before you jump in with an enthusiasm dampening ‘Yes, but’.”

These seemingly little things have big impacts and flow on effects.

Micro Behavioural Scientists

study a large range of Micro behaviours in different settings to work out how to solve with very simple means some problems varying from the hugely complex to the unfortunately messy.

Interestingly, this opportunity began at Atherton State High School (ASHS) when Peak Performance was recognised as a resource needed on the Tablelands

by Principal Tony Whybird.

Tablelands Regional Council’s Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony is just around the corner and Mayor Joe Paronella is looking forward to the event.

“I really look forward to this event each year,” he said.

“It is such an honour to recognise the people in our community who make the Tablelands such a great place to live,work and play.

“This year we have had 33

Cook Shire to celebrate in the Botanic Gardens Cook Shire residents are encouraged to get behind their local nominees for a morning celebration and awards ceremony for Australia Day on January 26.

The ceremony, to be held at Nature’s PowerHouse in the Botanic Gardens, starts at 9am on Saturday, January 26, with the official proceedings and award presentations followed by a delicious free morning tea.

The award categories are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year (Group or Individual), Sports (Group, Individual or Event), Arts and Culture (Group, Individual or Event) and Environment (Individual).

This year’s awards will include a display celebrating Cook Shire Council’s Centenary,

which fell on January 16, 2019.

Attendees will also hear from this year’s Australia Day Ambassador for Cooktown, Tasman Bain, who is the Co-Founder of Meri Toksave, a youth-led gender equality initiative in Papua New Guinea.

Mr Bain is also Chair of the Australian Red Cross Queensland Youth Advisory Committee, a Youth Commissioner of the National Youth Commission into Youth Unemployment and a Youth Delegate to the CSIRO National Outlook Project. Cook Shire Council Australia Day Awards will be held on Saturday January 26, at Nature’s PowerHouse in the Botanic Gardens from 9.00am.

Family fun on Australia Day The Bryce family at Dimbulah’s annual family fun day on Australia Day last year.

IF you’re after a family friendly outing that is jam-packed with activities and entertainment this Australia Day, look no further than Dimbulah’s Family Fun Day at the Memorial Hall Park on Saturday.

An agenda complete with waterslides, toad races, music, thong throwing competitions and much more will be available for all to enjoy, and Dimbulah Community Centre’s Manager Grace Armenti said she expects the event to be a real hit with attendees.

“Preparations for the event have been going really well,” she said.

“We have a variety of activities that will cater to everyone, and we’re predicting a strong crowd to be on hand.

“The Family Fun Day will coincide with the launch of the Great Wheelbarrow Race, and I’d like to thank the Mareeba

Shire Council for their involvement in this event.”

Ms Armenti said the Wolfram Road Fire Brigade will be coming along, and will be bringing Bushy the Bushfire Wallaby with them to join in the fun.

“This whole day is an opportunity for people in the region to enjoy and celebrate the wonderful country we live in,” Ms Armenti said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the work the Dimbulah Community Centre volunteers have put in, they have worked tirelessly in helping organise this event.”

For those who get a bit peckish, there will a sausage sizzle, lamingtons and drinks available on the day.

The Family Fun Day will start at 10am and run until 3pm, and attendees are asked to bring a hat, sunscreen and a towel.

Celebrating local heroes MAREEBA Shire's unsung heroes and high achievers will be recognised at Council's annual Australia Day celebrations later this month.

Eighteen residents from across the Shire will be acknowledged for their selfless dedication to the community and talents in the sporting arts and cultural fields.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was fantastic to see so many young achievers nominated this year. "I am delighted to see over half of the nominees are younger members in our community," he said.

“These inspiring young individuals have all demonstrated, in their own way, outstanding achievements in sporting, arts and academics, as well as selfless contributions to the community.”

The annual celebration will be held on the evening of Friday 25 January 2019 and include the announcement of the Citizen and Junior Citizen Awards plus a Citizenship Ceremony at which 13 candidates will choose to call

the Mareeba Shire home.

This year marks 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law, creating for the first time a legal status of being uniquely Australian.

The first Australian citizenship ceremony was held on 3 February 1949, with seven men – representing each Australian state and territory, like the Commonwealth Star on our flag – swearing their allegiance to Australia.

“I strongly encourage the community to come along and recognise the achievements of the nominated individuals and groups and welcome our newest citizens to the Shire - celebrating the rich cultural diversity we pride ourselves on,” Cr Gilmore said. Mareeba Shire Council's Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Friday January 25, at the Mareeba International Club, commencing at 6.30pm.

LAST Monday, January 14, Mulungu Health Service held a Youth Night at Arnold Park in Mareeba, with special guest, Deadly Choices ambassador Petero Civoniceva.

More than 60 youth turned up for the event and enjoyed a game of touch football and basketball.

There was also games with prizes and food for all.

Those in attendance were lucky enough to get to speak to Petero and also get their photo taken with the rugby league legend.

Deadly Choices aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make healthy choices for themselves and their families – to stop smoking, to eat good food and exercise daily.

The youth of Mareeba enjoyed a game of touch football.

2. In a large bowl, beat together sugar and egg until light in colour.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.

4. Pour into egg mixture and stir to combine. Pour in oil, milk and vanilla extract. Divide batter evenly into 12 muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until a tester inserted into the centre comes out clean.

5. While muffins are baking, melt butter and pour remaining sugar into a small bowl. When muffins are done, lightly brush the top of each with some melted butter, remove from the pan and roll in sugar. Cool on a wire rack.

Rhee Tae Kwon Do to kick off in Ravenshoe RHEE Tae Kwon Do continues its rise as one of the most popular martial arts on the Tablelands, and that is apparent with the news of the opening of a new centre in Ravenshoe.

Scheduled to open next month, the Ravenshoe Rhee Tae Kwon Do centre will be run by Third Degree Regional Instructor Jacob Gigliotti, a veteran of the discipline for more than 21 years.

“I grew up in Ravenshoe and started my Rhee Tae Kwon Do journey there when I was 16 years of age,” he said.

After his time spent in Ravenshoe, Gigliotti went on to run Rhee Tae Kwon Do centres in both Townsville and Weipa, the latter of which established itself as the biggest centre north of Brisbane.

“The centre in Weipa regularly had about 100 people training there a night, and for a little town like that it was fantastic to see,” he said.

“Now fate has led me back to my hometown of Ravenshoe, and World Master Chong Chul Rhee

and Regional Master Instructor Sixth Degree Gennaro Arena have requested that I open up a centre there.

“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to go back to my grassroots and give back to the community.”

Gigliotti said Rhee Tae Kwon Do has played a major role in his life for the past two decades, and he relishes the opportunity to pass on some of that knowledge to the people that attend his classes.

“For me the martial art doesn’t just help an individual, it helps shape a community,” he said.

“When you look at those who are leaders in the community such as school captains, sporting champions and the like, you will find a lot of them came through Rhee Tae Kwon Do. “It’s the work ethic, confidence, respect and self-discipline it develops that make it such an important and worthwhile martial art.”

Gigliotti took time to thank those who have been integral in

ensuring his move to Ravenshoe came to fruition.

“Firstly I would like to thank World Master Chong Chul Rhee, he’s been doing this in Australia for 49 years, and his continued support for Rhee Tae Kwon Do in this country has been amazing,” he said.

“I would also like to recognise Tablelands Regional Master Instructor Gennaro Arena, it’s great to have him guiding us here in this region and he’s been crucial to the growth of the discipline here.

“And lastly I would like to thank Regional Secretary General Allan Durdin, he has a lot of responsibilities in both Cairns and on the Tablelands and he brings invaluable experience and knowledge to the leadership team in Far North Queensland.”

Gigliotti said he looks forward to opening the new Rhee Tae Kwon Do centre and he appears confident it will be a roaring success.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Women’s league – Gators’ seeking interest for 2019 comp THE Mareeba Gladiators are asking for expressions of interest for those who would like to be involved with the Cairns District Rugby League’s first instalment of the women’s NRL Touch League competition.

The non-tackle competition is open for ladies from 15-40 years of age, and the Gladiators are still on the lookout for players and a coach.

The ladies team will represent the Mareeba Gladiators and will be playing against the other clubs in the CDRL, with the season comprising of ten weeks throughout the regular season followed by finals.

Payne adds further punch to strong forward pack

THE Atherton Roosters continue to stockpile talent as they recently announced the signing of Ravenshoe Tigers junior Lachlan Payne.

Payne, 21, returns after playing in the well-respected Townsville District Rugby League competition for Norths last year, where he established himself as one of the premier second rowers in the league.

Payne said he looks forward to donning the Roosters jersey this season.

“My decision was one I made so that I could be closer to family,” he said.

“I’m excited to be back and to be playing with some of the boys I grew up playing with and against on the Tablelands.

“Although I played for Ravenshoe growing up, every footy player from the region looked up to the senior players and wanted to represent the Atherton Roosters.”

Payne left Ravenshoe to attend Ignatius Park when he was 16, a school renowned for producing exceptional rugby league talent the likes of Michael Mor-

Payne’s young yet impressive resume includes being selected for Townsville Country last year; an experience he said was huge for his rugby league development.

“Going up against Towns-

ville City was a really good test for me personally,” he said.

“A lot of their players had Queensland Cup contracts and I think that opportunity to play them will be good for my footy moving forward.”

Atherton were set a task needing to win two games against ladder leaders Norths and Mulgrave on Saturday to earn a place in the Cricket Far North T20 grand final on Sunday.

Taking on Norths at Griffiths Park in the first match, Atherton won the toss and elected to bowl. Dylan Pettingill struck in his first over, going on to claim 3-20 off his spell, while Seppe Barletta, Fred Pittorino and Dan Parnell all pitched in with a wicket each.

The bowlers were supported by some sharp fielding with Peter Sceresini snaring 3 catches and a run-out in his homecoming match. Norths closed their innings 7-87.

Dan Parnell 25 and Tom Boorman 43 not-out led the chase posting a 52 run partnership. Atherton reached the target in the 16th over.

The second match against Mulgrave was played under lights at Minniecon-Gregory Oval, with both teams needing a win for a finals berth. Atherton won the toss and elected to bowl.

Wickets were shared in a good team effort, restricting Mulgrave to 103 runs. Fred Pittorino 23 batted patiently on a tricky wicket to set the foundation and Dan Parnell 21 not-out, Chris Adams 9, Tom Boorman 8, Peter Sceresini 12, Paul Nasser 13 and Michael Salerno 6 notout contributed.

A STRONG contingent of more than 50 players was on hand for the Mareeba Bulls’ first preseason training last Tuesday.

Among those were some key acquisitions for the upcoming season, most notably Mareeba juniors and former state league players Alex Plowman and Jamie Carroll.

Plowman, 31, and Carroll, 28, will bring invaluable experience and immense talent to a side which found themselves languishing towards the bottom of the ladder in 2018.

Plowman, who returns to football after having a year off, said he looks forward to helping bring the side back into the mix and in contention for the finals.

“I had a year off football as I had some things going on in my personal life,” he said.

“My partner and I had a second child and we also built a house, so it was a pretty crazy year for me last year and I didn’t really have time to commit to football.

“Now that I am settled personally, I am eager to play again and decided to have a sit down with coaches Perry (Krakowc-

zyk) and Ange (Tatti).

“They outlined their plans for this season and it got me really excited for the year ahead.”

Plowman said he hopes to bring experience and knowledge to what is a relatively young squad.

“It’s great to see so many good youngsters coming through the club, and I can’t wait to see their continued development throughout the season,” he said.

“We still have plenty of work ahead of us to be successful this year, particularly from a fitness perspective, but I’m confident Perry will whip us up into great shape so we are able to perform at our best.”

The acquisition of Jamie Carroll was also a big win for the storied Tablelands club.

Carroll has been playing as a semi-professional for the better part of 10 years, most recently being with the Cairns Heat last year who were axed from the NPL Queensland Competition.

“One of the benefits with regards to the demise of the Cairns Heat will be playing purely for the love of the game again,” Carroll said.

“I’m looking forward to representing my local club once

again, and hopefully we can have a strong season that will bring the town together.”

Carroll said he was particularly excited about playing for seasoned coach Perry Krakowczyk.

“Playing under Perry this season will be great, I’ve known him for a long time and he’s been somewhat of a mentor to me,” he said.

“His appointment has provided a real boost for myself and a number of the other Bulls players – he is very experienced and has the respect of everyone at the club.”

Carroll said due to his long time away from local football, he is unsure what to expect.

“I’m going to make sure I enjoy my time back playing for the Bulls, however I understand there’s a serious element to it,” he said.

“It’s still early days but I think with the personnel we have in place, we can have a really successful year.”

Bulls newly appointed coach Perry Krakowczyk sounded positive when describing the club’s prospects this year.

“It was great to see such a strong turn-out for our first pre-

season training of the year,” he said.

“I thought there would be 3035 players come along, but to see more than 50 was fantastic.”

The Bulls will be hoping for a more successful campaign this year, and Krakowczyk spoke about the integral role the club’s new acquisitions will play moving forward.

“It is definitely good to have experienced and well-respected players like Jamie and Alex on board and hopefully we will be able to recruit a few more before the season starts,” he said.

“Not only for their ability on the pitch but also to help steer the young players in the right direction as they are the future.”

Krakowczyk was also quick to heap praise on the structures and personnel in place at the Mareeba Bulls.

“I have been very impressed with the club and its direction, they have people working behind the scenes who are very supportive and it makes my job a lot easier,” he said.

“I am really looking forward to the year ahead.”

Preseason kicks off for Gladiators

THERE was a strong turn-out on hand as the senior players of the Mareeba Gladiators were put through their paces at the club’s first pre-season training.

The Gladiators’ first training run is a relatively late start when comparing it to other teams throughout the competition; however with a committee, coaching staff and a strong playing group now cemented, they will be looking to hit the ground running as the 2019 season ap-

proaches.

Fitness was at the forefront of last Tuesday’s session, with running, body weight exercises and ball work under fatigue being the blueprint, and they will be hoping that will help establish a fitness level amongst the playing group to allow them to reach their full potential.

For those interested in playing this year, training starts at 6pm at Davies Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
