Christmas appeal boosted by donation IT’S a time for giving and Mareeba Rotary last week boosted the Mareeba Shire Mayor’s Christmas Appeal with a $1000 donation which will help bring Christmas cheer to those in need.

Each year, the Mareeba Shire Council’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that the vulnerable and isolated people in the Mareeba Shire are able to experience the joy of Christmas.

With just 14 days until

Christmas Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging residents to get behind the appeal, saying there were many people within the Mareeba Shire who needed assistance this festive season.

“In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal, which exemplifies what Christmas is all about,” Cr Gilmore said.

“Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture

of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community.”

Council distributes food vouchers to help ease the burden at what can be a stressful time for those struggling to make ends meet. The vouchers are delivered to families referred by community centres in Dimbulah, Julatten, Kuranda and Mareeba. Cr Gilmore is encouraging those who need assistance to apply at their local community

centre.

For those interested in getting involved in the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, donations can be made at Council’s service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda.

People can also send their donation by cheque to Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. Make the cheque payable to MSC Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Donations will also be accepted via online direct debit to

No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal.

Greater water source for Tableland communities TABLELAND towns Herberton and Ravenshoe are now the beneficiaries of a crucial service after Friday signified the official opening of the Herberton Water Reservoir and Treatment Plant along with the Ravenshoe Sewerage Treatment Plant Upgrade.

The Herberton project was able to come to fruition after the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning awarded the Tablelands Regional Council $2.3 million to ensure Herberton residents have a more reliable water source.

Construction on the project began back in 2017, and will go a long way in helping rectify the water security problems that have plagued the region.

Herberton and its surrounds have continually been forced to adhere to multiple boil water notices, and now can drink and utilise their water with much greater confidence since the implementation of these developments.

When speaking on the water issues that have impacted Tablelands communities in recent times, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said projects like the ones seen in Herberton and Ravenshoe were of grave importance.

“We understand and recognise that this is a very serious is-

sue (not just an inconvenience) affecting the community’s personal expenses, businesses and the liveability and desirability of their properties,” he said.

“As a council we want to assure the community we hear you and are committed to improving the quality and reliability of water across the region, and that’s evidenced with what we’ve done in Herberton and Ravenshoe.”

TRC Division 1 Councillor Kate Eden also thanked those who played an integral role in delivering a much-needed service to the region.

“I acknowledge the work of the previous council, particularly Shaaron Linwood for committing to both projects,” she said.

“Thanks to the staff and contractors, especially Manager Jon Turner for the change of scope to include the treatment plant at Herberton for nearly the same budget.”

In addition to the Herberton and Ravenshoe projects, TRC have outlined solutions in three key areas that will go a long way in combating the water issues moving forward.

The Water Business Strategy and Infrastructure Development Plan will determine the most efficient and effective solutions to improve the reliability of our

New banners showcase town MAREEBA’S main street has seen some new, colourful accessories in the form of banners that showcase some of the main events and attractions common to the area.

The banners were provided by a joint project courtesy of Mareeba Shire Council and Mareeba Chamber of Commerce.

The banners help to highlight to visitors what happens in Mareeba over a 12 month period inciting them to stop by and explore the town.

A local business person in Mareeba brought the idea of the banners to Council and with the help of Mareeba Chamber of Commerce they got to work

in designing and installing new banners.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro is pleased with the new project and said he hopes it helps to boost tourism in the region.

“Overtime the banners will make an impact on peoples decisions to stop by,” he said.

“We get a lot of people coming through – backpackers, grey nomads and people going fishing up the cape.

“I encourage locals to even take the opportunity to go to some of the nice places and businesses in town.”

With more people buying and shopping locally it doesn’t

just improve the town’s economy, it also helps provide local people with jobs.

“Buy local whenever you can, every dollar you spend in Mareeba helps another person keep their job,” Mr Moro said.

The banners are part of a multistage beautification project for the main street of Mareeba and are just another step to the development that is planned.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Kevin Davies is very pleased with the banners and hopes to see many more projects completed in the coming year.

In the upcoming year, stage two and three of the Byrnes Street beatification project are

aimed to be completed, then projects towards the smaller towns in the shire are scheduled.

The town banners will remain for a number of years before getting replaced by newer and fresher ones.

Emergency personnel were on hand at the Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre last Thursday to hold their first exercise as the cyclone season approaches.

THE Tablelands Regional Council held an official tour last Thursday of their Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre.

The state-of-the-art facility is in place just in time for the beginning of the cyclone season, and aims to coordinate the response required when a disaster occurs within the region.

During times of disaster, the Tablelands Local Disaster Coordination Centre is activated by the Chairperson of the Local Disaster Management Group.

The Local Disaster Coordinator will manage the Local Disaster Coordination Centre and is responsible for coordinating the disaster response operations in conjunction with officers from

other lead emergency agencies.

The tour included the LDCC’s first major exercise ‘Dam It’s Wild’, which provided emergency personnel the opportunity to test the new facility and multiagency response to a simulated weather event.

“This is a crucial service that will be of great benefit to the communities on the Tablelands,” TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“This is an essential facility that provides local disaster management authorities the necessary tools to have far better oversight and coordination for response and recovery efforts, allowing them to act with improved speed and efficiency.

“This facility is one the community should be proud of and

“The results of the survey provide a measurement in time that we can use as a benchmark for further surveys,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“They will also inform current and future service provision, continuous improvement and our strategic direction.

“We gathered data from the community between 20 September and 13 October 2019 using an online survey and face-toface interviews, and a total of 668 residents provided feedback.

“The demographic information ensured we had good representation from across the region.

“The results are not unexpected and, unsurprisingly, the high-priority services are – roads and drainage, water services, rubbish, waste collection and recycling, sewerage services, parks, reserves and playgrounds, emergency management and community resilience, community facilities, town planning and development assessments, natural resource management and economic development.

“Areas that have higher levels of dissatisfaction include roads and drainage, water services, community facilities and town planning and development assessments, which, we are pleased, mirror where we are

focusing much of our time and resources to improve.

“With roads, we have just endorsed a Transport Strategy that will ensure the investment in TRC-controlled roads is fit for purpose, and prioritised based on road criticality and condition at the lowest whole-of-life cost.

“We are bound to reap the benefits of this strategy as it is actioned over the coming months and years.

“Our Water Business Strategy is on target for completion early next year, and $8.3M in water infrastructure investment is occurring this financial year in line with the Water Quality Improvement Plan.

“Reimaging community facilities engagement has highlighted the community’s desire for multi-purpose facilities that meet current and future need, and the recently-adopted Community Facilities Strategy outlines the long-term approach to providing improved facilities across the region.

“In the development space, fees and charges have been reduced, we’ve improved online services, a free pre-lodgement advice service is available, and investment incentives are being considered to entice appropriate development.

“I am confident we are striving to improve services in the areas the community is most keen for us to work in, and I look forward to seeing both short and long-term gains,” he said.

DDMG helping keep our community safe EMERGENCY personnel, local politicians and community organisation members gathered at the Mareeba Police Station last week to unveil the new District District Management Plan.

The plan’s aim is to provide an effective disaster manage-

ment plan in the district, and is endorsed by the District Disaster Management Group (DDMG).

In addition, the plan is designed to ensure that necessary strategies are in place for disaster management regarding all hazards that are identified as

potentially harmful – including significant losses that impact the community physically, psychologically and economically.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes is confident the plan is going to be extremely effective.

“Our group in the past had a much greater area that we had to cover,” he said.

“Now with a much smaller operating area, it enables us to focus more on the issues that are impacting our district directly.

“The DDMG is one made up

of a number of capable individuals, and it’s fantastic to see their hard work going towards providing such an effective plan for this district.

“It’s something that is inherently crucial to the region and I hope to see it around for a long

time.”

The plan has been prepared by a planning committee comprised of representatives from the various agencies that will have significant roles in disaster management operations.

Minister visits Tablelands to help combat dairy crisis “It is gut wrenching to know that the heart and soul of our farming community and towns is being treated with contempt

by Coles and Woolworths.

“All we ask is that the retailers sell milk at an appropriate price at the checkouts and that a fair share of the increased cost of milk be passed back to farmers to cover their cost of production.

Minister Mark Furner was on the Tablelands last week to discuss with dairy farmers and industry representatives on how to combat the dairy crisis.

STATE Government Minister Mark Furner visited the Tablelands last week to listen to the community’s dairy industry concerns.

“On behalf of the Tableland’s dairy farmers, we thank Mark Furner MP, Queensland’s Minister for Agriculture,” TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“We appreciate that dairy farmers, industry representatives and chambers of commerce had

the opportunity to present their first-hand account of the crisis our farmers are in, and the devastation that will be inflicted on our towns should the local industry collapse.”

Minister Furner confirmed he would seek to discuss the dairy crisis with other state agriculture ministers and the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Senator Bridget McKenzie, at a meeting next week in Moree.

“There’s no doubt that this is a major problem, and our government will be working tirelessly to ensure dairy farmers receive a fair price for their milk,” he said.

“We’re committed to fighting for our dairy farmers and we need to realise the enormous positive impact they have on our communities.”

False Mareeba mangoes for sale

Mangoes labelled as Mareeba were found at multiple grocery stores in southern states.

MAREEBA and Dimbulah mango growers have received a backhanded compliment in the form of imitation mangoes for sale down south.

Mangoes with the label “Mareeba” were spotted for sale at a major grocery store in Melbourne recently, but with the late start to the season local mangoes are now only starting to be harvested.

FNQ Growers president Joe Moro is incredibly disappointed in this news, but is seeing the funny side.

“A lot of growers are very upset about it, it’s not the first time this sort of thing has happened,” he said.

“It’s a strange way of complimenting the area and the produce we grow.

“The bottom line is it’s not something we condone and we wouldn’t like to see it happen again.”

The person responsible for the fake mangoes has come forward and apologised, but has not yet apologised to the growers Mr Moro said.

“Mareeba mangoes have a certain taste,” he said.

“That’s because it’s grown in the Mareeba-Dimbulah area.

“FNQ Growers will be making sure that all parties that are connected to the selling and marketing of mangoes need to make sure they are not falsely advertising.”

Mareeba Mangoes are only just starting to be harvested in the Mareeba Dimbulah area and can be seen on shelves late De-

cember and into the New Year.

Mr Moro is going into the harvesting season with a positive outlook, and describing it as a late season.

“Winter came a bit later this year so the flowering of the mangos was delayed about a month,” he said “The weather is always a part of the equation but this year it has played a significant role in delaying the season.

“It’s not just mangos its lychees and even avocados seem to be delayed.”

Even with the delayed season Mr Moro has assured that this season’s harvests quality will not be stained by the setback, consumers should be expecting the same great Mareeba mangoes taste and quality.

THE Mareeba Shire has seen another resident put their hand up to run at next year’s Local Government Elections, with Speewah’s Ann Bell officially announcing her nomination for the position of councillor last week.

Ann Bell’s contributed biography: I have lived in Speewah since relocating from Naracoorte in the South East of South Aus-

tralia in 2013.

I have a background in health including nursing, work health and safety, risk and accreditation systems.

I have also been involved in the education and training of aged care workers in FNQ’s remote communities such as Palm Island, Weipa and Mornington Island.

Currently I am a Regional Assessor on the tablelands undertaking assessments and re-

ferrals for services to support people living in their homes, to ensure that they can remain at home for as long as possible.

During my time in Naracoorte South Australia, I served as a councillor for 7 years on the Naracoorte Lucindale Council and was Deputy Mayor for a year during that period.

I have decided to nominate for a position within the Mareeba Shire as I believe that all councils must be appropriately managed using transparent, sustainable governance and development, in particular the support of businesses and preservation of natural resources.

Having lived in South Australia, said to be, the driest state on the driest continent on earth.

I have seen development that has had detrimental impacts on populations, landscapes and wildlife. This is not to say I am anti – business, I have in the past run family businesses with my husband Graeme, however development must be well scrutinized to ensure that resources belonging to the people are protected, to ensure that future generations can enjoy the magnificent environment we inhabit.

I will be visiting constituents leading up to the election on the 28th March 2020 and look forward to discussing your issues and how you believe those issues should be managed.

Positive step in fight against noxious weed Navua Sedge MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth MP is pleased the fight against noxious weed Navua Sedge is starting to gain traction with further funding going toward research to identify the best pathogen to fight the weed.

Navua Sedge has now spread as far south as the NSW border and is taking over farmland paddocks inhibiting grass growth, affecting feed for livestock, native animals and also spreading along waterways and National Parks.

Biosecurity (BQ) principal entomologist Dr Kunjithapatham Dhileepan had been working with researchers from the National Herbarium of Tanza-

nia, Kenya’s East African Herbarium and the University of Southern Queensland to identify pathogens that could provide biological control of Navua Sedge. $250,000 in funding has already been secured through a previous campaign involving Mr Knuth, the Malanda Beef Plan Group and local councillors which helped secure funds for control measures lead by Dr Dhileepan.

State Agricultural Minister Furner said the discoveries had allowed the DAF to successfully apply for federal government funding.

Mr Knuth said it’s a positive

step toward gaining control of the weed.

“We welcome this – it has been a long process working with Malanda Beef Group and the Minister’s office, further funding toward Dr Dileepan’s research is promising,” Mr Knuth said.

“This is spreading throughout the state and becoming unstoppable with traditional methods.

“Many councils across Queensland are now taking up the fight.

“We still have a way to go, but we are starting to make inroads,” Mr Knuth said.

Wind farm community fund open for applications The Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community Fund is open to applications from community organisations hoping to share a pot worth more than $200,000

PROJECTs or initiatives based within 50km of the turbines are eligible for support from the fund, which will operate every year the wind farm generates clean, safe, renewable electricity.

Wind farm owner RATCH-Australia is keen to see another strong response from the local community, after 22 applications were supported in the first year of the fund’s operation.

manager Paul McDonald said: “We received more than 80 applications in the first year and were impressed with the innovative ideas we heard about from right across the qualifying area.

“Anyone who has applied before is welcome to reapply this year and we look forward to hearing from new groups with new projects as well.

“I would encourage anyone interested to check the project website

for details of how to apply and how to give your group the best chance of success.”

The deadline for applications to be considered in the next round of funding is 31 January.

Once the deadline passes a panel of local volunteers will meet to discuss the applications and make recommendations for the projects to be supported.

The fund’s catchment also extends around the Windy Hill Wind Farm at Ravenshoe which is also owned and operated by RATCH-Australia.

Optus tackles blackspot OPTUS has recently flicked the switch on a new mobile tower in the Atherton Tablelands to tackle the mobile blackspot in the Tinaroo region.

The new site is being co-funded by Optus and the Federal and Queensland State Governments as part of round two of the Mobile Black Spot Program.

The Mobile Black Spot Program is a Federal Government initiative to improve and extend mobile phone coverage in regional and remote Australia.

Coverage from the site, which is located on an existing tower of Lookout Road will enable more than 400 residents to connect to the internet, text, make and receive calls.

More than 54 square kilometres of roads surrounding the site will receive greatly enhanced mobile coverage, including sections of Tinaroo Falls Dam Road.

Minister for Regional Services, Decentralisation and Local Government, Mark Coulton said the Coalition Government is committed to improving connectivity for people living in

regional and rural areas.

“This government knows how frustrating it is to be talking on the phone and then lose service, so we’re getting on with the job of building more phone towers to deliver better service,” he said.

“Not only will these towers make it easier for people to stay connected to family and friends, it will also make it easier to do business and access education.”

Minister Coulton said the first four rounds of this highly successful program are funding 1047 new base stations in areas that are not commercially viable without Coalition Government investment, with more than 750 of them already online delivering benefits.

“More than 35,000 Triple 0 calls have so far been made possible through the Mobile Black Spot Program,” he said.

An additional $160 million in new funding for rounds five and six of the program was announced earlier this year to continue to improve phone service for people in Australia’s regions.

A TABLELANDS grazing family with a passion for farming sustainably has won a Queensland Reef Champion award.

Woodleigh Cattle Station’s Peter and Kate Waddell were named Reef Sediment Champions at an awards ceremony in Mackay on Tuesday that honoured Queenslanders working to reduce our impact on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Waddells live 130km from the ocean but work on their property to repair extensive gullies, fix eroded tailings dams, create off-stream watering points and change grazing practices is helping the Reef none-

theless by stopping thousands of tonnes of sediment from flowing there each year.

“Woodleigh has been run by our family for more than a century and we want our young ones who are coming on to see the benefits and to love the land as much as we do,’’ Kate Waddell said.

The family is working with Terrain NRM on improvements including engineered earthworks and natural grazing practices as part of the Australian Government-funded Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program but their passion for protecting the land began much

earlier when they introduced changes like wet season spelling and off-stream watering points.

Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said the Waddells were championing gully remediation work and grazing management practice change in the Upper Herbert region.

The Reef Champion Awards, run by the Reef Alliance with support from the Australian and Queensland governments, recognise outstanding achievements by individuals and organisations.

How about the $1.4 million Leagues Club opened 10/01/1994 by the then Mayor Mr Chris Lewis with guest, Rugby League legion. Mr Norm Provan, attending along with President of the club, Mr Greg Williams. This took place in front of about 200 people.

Also in 1996 Mayor Chris Lewis unveiled the signage at the Shire’s entrances to improve appearances and appeal.

MAREEBA motorists can now keep their cars squeaky clean after a new car wash officially opened last week.

Cleans Choices Car Wash, which is situated at 308 Byrnes Street, is a modern state-of-the-art car wash offering automatic and manual bays that will have your vehicle looking brand new no matter its model.

Not only are the facilities second to none, Clean Choices Car Wash also offers something never seen before in Mareeba – with motorists previously having to travel to Atherton to have their car washed.

It’s a vision owners Tom and Ruth Maisel have had for Mareeba ever since they emigrated here from the United States more than three decades ago.

“We wanted to put a car wash in here 35 years ago,” Ruth laughed.

“However we went down the agricultural path and didn’t have the time to do it, but I’m so pleased we’ve been able to achieve this.

“It’s taken plenty of hard work but everyone throughout the town has been so supportive.

2020 is set to be a big season for Rugby League with a senior women’s rugby league competition set to hit the green next year.

The senior women’s division hasn’t seen the football field in

nearly ten years and is set to make a comeback with much support being raised.

The decision to rekindle the division was passed at the Cairns and District Rugby League annual general meeting

and was supported by clubs and officials from across the region.

This new division gives women in the region who want to play more of an opportunity next year as this year only had four city-versus-country fixtures

in the region.

Next year’s senior women’s division is hoping to see four to six strong teams in next year’s competition to compliment the already strong men’s divisions.

Roosters first training for 2020 PLAYERS for all grades of the Atherton Senior Roosters Rugby League Club are advised

that 2020 pre-season training will start on Monday, January 6 at the Mungalli Creek Dairy

Stadium with the ladies at 5pm and the men at 6pm. The Senior Roosters are booked

for three trial games in March before the start of the premiership competition on April 4.

THE Mareeba United Football Club’s Six-a-Side competition comes to a climax this week as the top four teams in each division prepare for the semi- finals on Wednesday night followed by the grand finals on Friday night.

At the business end of the season all top four teams are finely tuned and ready to vie for the trophies and prize money up for grabs.

In the men’s A-Grade on Wednesday night at 7pm on field 1, the Melandrinos will take on the Friggers and in the other semi at 8pm also on field 1, table toppers Mareeba Mazda will take on Cream Bun United.

ATHERTON got away to a reasonable start in their 2-day Cricket Far North match against Cassowary Coast at Atherton’s Loder Park on Saturday.

MAREEBA’S Bryde’s Boxing Gym has added to its stellar reputation after some impressive performances from some of its boxers at the Australian Amateur Boxing Titles held in Punchbowl, Sydney recently.

The gym was able to bring home two silver medals and one bronze medal in one of the biggest amateur events held in Australia in a number of years, with more than 100 bouts taking place over the three days of competition.

Below is how each medallist from the Bryde’s Boxing Gym fared over the competition: Matthew Carroll On night one of the tournament, Matthew continued his winning streak in a dominant performance against Tasmanian Cayden Rossi with a unanimous points decision victory.

Matthew then proceeded to the final where he went

head to head against very tough and classy Rockhampton boxer Brodi Helliwell.

Matthew lost via split-decision, resulting in him taking out the silver medal.

Matthew’s coach Wayne Bryde said he cannot be more proud of his young boxer.

“Matthew Carroll puts 110 percent into his training and that’s why he is always at the top of the sport and will continue his success in the new year,” he said.

Arnold Green Arnold also was fortunate to fight in the final for a gold medal, however came up short and had to settle for the silver medal.

Coach Wayne Bryde said Arnold has plenty of natural boxing talent and will go a long way in the sport.

Baydon Hopgood After making his debut earlier this year, Baydon Hopgood has continued his immense im-

provement in a very short period of time.

Further evidence of that is his performance in Punchbowl, where he secured a bronze medal in what was a very tough fight with experience New South Wales boxer Charzar Ali. Coach Wayne Bryde said it was a very tough and close fight that saw plenty of leather traded throughout the bout.

“Baydon is only new in the sport and has accomplished so much in such a short time,” he said “To be number three in Australia is unbelievable in only ten months of training.”

Bryde’s Boxing gym Mareeba said they would like to thank everyone who donated money and helped get their team down to Sydney.

“Without your support none of this could ever have happened, so thank you,” Wayne Bryde said.
