Atherton – centre of regional politics? By Justin Fris TABLELANDS Regional Councillor Geoff Stocker believes Atherton would be an ideal location for a new Northern Australia development office. In the document released a fortnight ago by the Abbott Government – it was recommended that a ‘Northern Australia’ development office be relocated from Canberra – in a bid to greater serve the region. The office would be responsible for handling all major issues and policies that impact the north of our nation. Cr Stocker’s motion (which was carried unanimously during ‘General Business’) will see representatives of the TRC write to
both Premier Palaszczuk and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to garner their support. During his address to councillors, Cr Stocker said: “I think most councillors would have been aware that during the last week, I’ve been reading through this White Paper on Australian development; looking for things which might be useful, might affect or benefit this Council and Tablelands communities. “There is one thing there which I think may be worth acting upon, if the Council is so inclined. The recommendation in here that the office of North Australia be shifted to the north; out of Canberra. “At the moment, it is located within the Deputy Prime Minister’s office in Canberra; and there is no location suggested at this
particular point. “I think it could be appropriate that we suggest to the Deputy Prime Minister that Atherton be an optimal location for this particular office. “There are a lot of advantages, logical advantages, technical advantages, in choosing a site like Atherton. “It’s well ahead of a lot of particular sites, but I think the end result would be more to do with politics than technical aspects. “But I think it would be useful that Council at least throw our hat in the ring, and suggest it to the Deputy PM that Atherton would be a good place to establish this office.

It has to stop now Codey Panetta looks to the future and wanted to share her past experience with readers. By Codey Panetta – Work Experience student Bullying; a word that holds so much meaning. Something that has always been stored in the back of the closet full of complications; seeming as it’s not important as others. It needs to stop now. Why do we do it? To make ourselves feel better? just for the fun of it? or simply because we don’t like how that person looks, talks, dresses, or what race they are? Everybody has been a bully at least once in their life, whether it be on social media or face to face; we’ve all done it. Can you imagine being in their shoes? Having to dread facing the day, only because they have someone waiting for them, ready to take away another piece of what’s left of their happiness. This not only affects the victim, but their family and friends also feel the effects. They have to watch the person they love and care for slowly fade away from them; the world and into darkness. We all know the saying “kids are cruel”, but kids are not the only ones who take part in this facade; teachers, parents, and bosses are also victims of this dilemma right here in Australia. Research commissioned by the Federal Government shows that one in every four Australian school students are affected by bullying, and have resulted in developing a mental illness or developing illnesses, namely: depression, anxiety, anorexia, nightmare disorder, and insomnia. Many people think as though you can just switch off these illnesses just like that. They are most definitely real and should be taken very seriously. Beyondblue (www.beyondblue.org.au) is quite a well-known foundation to support mental illnesses, mainly depression and anxiety. Their statistics show that one in 16 young Australians are currently experiencing depression, whereas one in six young Australians are currently experiencing anxiety; most likely caused by bullying. Personally, I am very passionate about this subject. I myself was a first-hand victim to bullying in my younger years. It took a very big toll on me and my family; from not wanting to go to school, to trying to change myself just so everyone could accept me and hopefully stop the bullying. Obviously that did not help the situation one bit, as it’s best to just face it as best as you can. Block them all out and be who you really are, because with age and success in your life, they’ll see just how unnecessary it was. It can be helped in so many ways. Beginning with not ignoring the signs to bullying or mental illnesses when you see them. Reading this article should kick everyone into action and make you realise just how bad bullying is in Australia. There will never really be a reason to why people bully or why that single person was picked out of so many; but we can start by taking this one step at a time, one life at a time. There are many places you can go to seek help if you or someone you know is battling with a mental illness such as depression or anxiety. A little chat with the local counsellor or your GP can be your first step to crushing this.
Below, Members of the Avolio family 40 years ago and above at the recent reunion in Mareeba.
Memories in Mareeba There was something quite special about a group of first cousins and their families holding a reunion in Mareeba, on June 27 and 28. The cousins were all children of four brothers who migrated from post-war Italy from the town of Fagnano Castello in Calabria, to Mareeba in the 1950’s. The oldest brother, Luigi Avolio, arrived in Mareeba in 1952 and was sponsored by Natale Tobiano, who had been in Australia since 1928. The other brothers Antonio, Mario and Armando, followed in the next three years. Australia in the 1950s offered migrants a secure future, and so the brothers all managed to be united with their families shortly after, all settling on tobacco farms. The reunion was held at the Mareeba RSL, attended by children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of the four brothers, and by the only surviving uncle, Antonio and aunts, Assunta and Emilia. The cousins came from Sydney, Townsville, Cairns, Gordonvale and Mareeba. There was great joy in seeing the Australian branches of the five generations of the Avolio family tree from the old stone house near an old oak tree, which was the home of Beatrice and Pasquale Avolio, whose four of their eight children came to Mareeba. During the dinner at the RSL,
old super-8 films were projected in new digital format, showing faded but happy images of the early years on the farms, complete with fashion and hairstyles of the time. The younger generation noticed that some things had changed; they also saw that the gatherings of relatives and friends, young and old, around tables full of home-made food, have remained the same. The weekend was also flavoured by visits to some of those early farms. The cousins stood at the same place on the Avolio farm on Dimbulah road to take the same photo they took over 40 years ago, all lined up in descending age. Some memories were fading, like the colours on the old fibro tobacco sheds, but others were as solid as the oak tree which once stood near the old stone house on the lush countryside of Pastillara on the sloping hills of Fagnano Castello.

Bid for Atherton to become political centre of northern Australia FROM PAGE 1 “It would mean a lot to us and I think we are in a position to offer substantial input into the development of northern Australia, if it were possible.” Several federal and state politicians were promptly contacted for their opinion on Cr Stocker’s idea; which, naturally was enthusiastically debated. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter told The Express that industry within the north had always worked more efficiently with localised operations, instead of Brisbane or Canberra. Upon returning from overseas, Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch commended the TRC for its initiative. “Good on them for their initiative,” he said. “I’m glad to see that
Cr Stocker has been able to get this motion up. “The only downside of the idea really is with connectivity; but, it doesn’t mean we can’t see some level of representation in regional towns such as Atherton.” Mr Entsch – who went to school in Mareeba and is currently a ratepayer within the TRC – said he has always admired Atherton’s attitude for progression. “Atherton has always been a place prepared to put its hand up,” he said. “Based on past performance, they deserve serious consideration.” The State Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and Qld Liberal Senator Matt Canavan were also contacted for comment, however both responses were not received by our print deadline.
TABLELANDS Regional Councillor Geoff Stocker believes Atherton could accommodate the new Northern Australia Office.
Ravenshoe slowly being rebuilt after disaster By Justin Fris COMMITTED volunteers across the Tablelands are steadily working to help restore the town of Ravenshoe. In the aftermath of the June explosion, community leaders and residents alike have united to help those affected by the tragedy. During last Wednesday’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting, Mayor Tom Gilmore formally announced that his Council would be donating $10,000 toward the fundraising appeal. “As part of the greater Tablelands community, Mareeba Shire Council’s support for the people of Ravenshoe at the time of this tragic accident is required and this contribution will help provide
much needed support to those in need. “I can scarcely imagine the horror of the staff and clients of the ‘Serves You Right Cafe’ at Ravenshoe at the moment that disaster struck so horrifyingly. “Neither can I sensibly understand the pain that those so grievously injured are now suffering and the trauma for their families. “This has been an extraordinary event which touches the hearts of people irrespective of where they live. “As a former Mayor (of the old TRC), I know the Ravenshoe community well and I am deeply sorry for those people injured and their families,” Mayor Gilmore said. “We are aware of a number of community groups who are conducting fundraising events

and should they wish to utilise council facilities for these, council has agreed to waive any hire costs that are normally applied,” he said. TRC division two councillor Shaaron Linwood has been appointed as chair for the ‘Ravenshoe Recovery Committee’ and is quite reflective on what has transpired during initial meetings. “As of Friday morning, the GIVIT Appeal was standing at an amazing $386,820; and is a real testament to the generosity of spirit of the community,” she said. “I do, however, always emphasise whenever I speak of the tally though, as in the scheme of things, given the number of severely burnt, and the possibly considerable modifications to home and vehicles that may need to be made, it is still not a large amount.

“(The) Recovery Group has been operating efficiently and all agencies are working closely together to ensure the best outcomes for the injured and their families and are putting significant energy into all aspects of the recovery.” Cr Linwood has also seen the benefits of working with fellow Cr Rod Marti, who was appointed as deputy chair. “Cr Marti has been a solid backstop for me and has been able to take on numerous task to free me up as the Recovery Chair to be able to concentrate fully on the recovery aspects and he is working hard with me across the Ravenshoe Community to address concerns as they arise. “Simply put, we are working together as a very cohesive team.”

MEN across the Tablelands will not be short of entertainment this Saturday, with several alternatives available. Naturally, the Mareeba Rodeo and watching the Ashes on telly will obviously be at the forefront of most plans; however there is another significant event being held in Dimbulah. After many years, members of the Tablelands Men’s Shed (Dimbulah district) are finally able to officially open their building. Beginning at 10am, several key local stakeholders will be in attendance, with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opening the building. There will be plenty of food and discussion to be had, with a special TV being brought in so no one will miss a second of the V8 Supercars in Townsville. All Men’s Sheds pride themselves on offering an alcohol and drug-free environment; a place where men can talk in confidence about their issues and lives. A special couple visited the shed last Wednesday, where they were formally acknowledged for their continued support. Mal and Elsie Coffey (pictured) – who have donated a considerable amount of money to the group – spent time with club members and officials on a beautiful day in Dimbulah. For those interested in attending the opening, the shed is located directly next to the Dimbulah Tennis Club on Park Avenue.
Landmark health ownership decision In a landmark decision, members of the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service have been granted complete ownership of all land and buildings under their jurisdiction. Effective from last Wednesday, this means that the HHS will take over all responsibilities previously held by the Department of Health. Torres and Cape HHS Board Chair Bob McCarthy said: “The transfer of land and property ownership from the department to the health service marks another step to full community control of locally delivered health services. “Obviously, any requests for addition-
al funding for such projects will still need to go forward for inclusion and consideration in the State Government’s overall future capital works programs. “This will always be an in-depth process that may well take a number of years to complete. “But it will now be the local health service that will make the final decision as to which projects are put forward for consideration as part of that overall government capital works program. “We are currently undertaking or are about to undertake a $36.3 million program of rectification and maintenance works at facilities throughout our region.’’
Futures Corp making progress THE Tablelands Futures Corporation chairman Michael Lawrence made a special presentation to the Tablelands Regional Council on June 18. Mr Lawrence began by highlighting the appointment of Joe Moro, as a new director for the TFC. Additionally, the TFC has been dealing with a vacancy, with Rob Macalister having left his role as ‘Project Officer’ to pursue employment opportunities overseas. Mr Lawrence added that since Mr Macalister had vacated the position, the TFC was finding it a ‘challenge’ to fill it. But above all, the significance of two major projects underpinned dialogue – which will both benefit our region greatly. “We set a budget last year and we are still well within that,” Mr Lawrence said.
“The first of the two projects is the investment attraction document – of which there is two parts. First, is to prepare an IA document in the short-term, which will ask the question: What are some investment opportunities for projects across the region? The other part of the investment attraction project is seeking local businesses and working with established local businesses across the region.” The second major project announcement regarded mountain biking; and the desire for FNQ to become the indispensable location of mountain biking in Australia. Both organisations have a wealth of experience to make these outcomes happen; which will follow on positive legacies generated from last year’s ‘Crocodile Trophy’ event.

Fire Station open day to raise funds By Justin Fris THE Yungaburra Fire Station held an open day on June 27, which was an extremely significant occasion for several reasons. Along with showcasing the various roles undertaken by the fire service, visitors were also given an opportunity to raise funds for the Ravenshoe tragedy. Atherton Fire station officer John Lindsay said the day went well, with both children and parents able to enjoy themselves. “We had two specialist fire trucks come up from Cairns,” he said. “Additionally, we had two trucks from Yungaburra and one from Atherton. “The kids had a lot of fun bouncing on the inflatable raft, which gave us a good opportunity to talk to the parents who had any questions. “We always like to promote safe practices and instil positive values.” Skyla Waters (Age 7, from Tolga) had fun during the Yungaburra Fire Station’s open day.

Kennedy gets better mobile phone coverage TONIGHT!
OPEN
RESIDENTS of Butchers Creek, Julatten and Watsonville are just a handful of those who will benefit from improved mobile phone coverage within the federal electorate of Kennedy. The enormity of the announcement was not overlooked by the sitting member Bob Katter, who applauded the decision. Thanks to all the people who worked hard to get this coverage. Some of these cases we have been taking to the Government for over eight years,” he said. “We had very substantial cases and in my view, it would have been difficult for the Government to say no.” Mr Katter added that many metro-based politicians would have little idea of what life with limited phone coverage is like. To someone in a city mobile coverage seems like a small thing, but when a family member nearly perishes -
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
it shows how valuable these things are. “Work output has increased by 30% due to mobile phones, whereas before we had dead running time in the car without mobile service. “We thank the Minister for Communications and the Federal Government. But in particular we thank the people who put their cases forward. “This will make one hell of a qualitative difference. Each blow we strike against the tyranny of distance - is a strike for our freedom.” With just only a year out from the 2016 Federal Election, campaigning is set to crank up a few notches within the electorate in coming months. Mr Katter, who has held the seat of Kennedy since 1993, will be kept on his toes by candidates from both the Labor and Liberal parties.

As part of the ‘Seeds of Renewal’ grant program, rural organisations are encouraged to apply for the program. This program directly targets these issues”.

Cooktown patients sleep easier PATIENTS within Cooktown Hospital will now be able to get a better night’s sleep, after a healthy dose of community kindness. Through input from the Endeavour Lions and the ‘Cooktown Friends of the Foundation’, three pressure-relief mattresses were donated, with each mattress valued at
$12,000. FOF vice president Daphne Fenton said: “Cooktown people are very willing to put their hands in their pockets and donate to worthy causes. “From the Friends of the Foundation’s viewpoint, we’ve been able to provide a number of pieces of equipment over the years, which has been of benefit to patients and in making the work of the staff easier. “They’re very good for patients with mobility problems. With these mattresses, staff can change the points of pressure, which makes being bedridden a more comfortable experience.” ELC president Jim Fay said: “It gives everyone involved with Lions and FOF enormous satisfaction knowing the time we volunteer can bring this sort of comfort.
“And anyone who has in some way donated, should be proud their contributions having seen the purchase of these mattresses.”
Kennedy electorate gets road funding THE federal electorate of Kennedy is set to receive $36.7 million in road funding from the Abbott Government. Derived through the ‘Roads to Recovery’ program, the funding has been cautiously welcomed by the sitting member, Bob Katter. “Road funding has been made a very serious issue with the State Government, given the powerful position of the KAP in the QLD Government. This in turn pressures the Federal Government,” he said. “The Government has not come to grips with the need for alternative routes for Far North Queensland – Charters Towers Road and the Hann Highway. “We appreciate the extra federal funding that has gone out to local governments; but by the same token it is cold comfort when one of the key strategic roads - the Charters Towers-Ravenshoe highway is still strangled by 40-50km of single lane highway. “There has been no really substantial allocation of monies whatsoever. “I can’t help but compare it to the good old days of the Country Party when we laid down 160km of pavement on dirt roads every year. Kennedy people would remember that.”
MSC donates to Ravenshoe appeal MAREEBA Shire Council will donate $10,000 toward the Ravenshoe appeal, after councillors successfully passed the motion during last Wednesday’s meeting.
Community Celebrations Lions and Lioness changeover
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift reveals five practical tips for Far North Queenslanders to feel healthier and happier in the here and now.
The healthy and happy high five Are you able to ‘shake it off’ when faced with the stress of looming deadlines, family pressures, long work hours and burgeoning household chores? If the answer is no, you’re perfectly normal! When it comes to the strains of daily life, it’s easy to get caught up in feelings of anxiety, sadness, exhaustion and just generally feeling ‘blah’. Learning new ways of managing stress can be useful for all of us, regardless of the life stage or the situation we find ourselves in. Whether you’ve got five minutes to spare or want to build lasting habits – today we’re opening the textbook on five scientificallybacked ways to lift your spirits and boost your happiness levels! One, get your sweat on! Regular exercise can increase the serotonin in your brain, which helps to regulate mood, sleep, libido, and appetite, warding off depression. Exercise also stimulates endorphins, nature’s uppers, triggering a positive feeling in your body. A daily dose of nature can increase your sense of wellbeing, vitality and energy while reducing feelings of stress, negativity, and sleep disturbances, so why not mix things up and take a bike ride through the scenic back country of the Atherton Tablelands or a lush rainforest walk! Two, mediate regularly. When you meditate, you learn to think more clearly, by letting go of the negative self-talk that can interfere with your judgement. Just 30 minutes of daily practice can build your selfawareness and reduce feelings of stress. And although it’s challenging to master, it’s worth the effort. Three, perform an act of kindness. Kindness to others can make you feel great too,
improving wellbeing by generating positive thoughts and nurturing meaningful interactions with those you care about. Even just small acts of benevolence can contribute to our greater good. Four, eat well. When you’re feeling a little down it’s normal to want to turn to comfort foods, but it’s important to avoid easy energy boosts – and crashes. Pack main meals with foods rich in amino acid tryptophan, a key building block for serotonin (the happy hormone). Chicken, oily fish, dairy foods, soya, nuts and seeds are good choices, and vitamin B6 – found in brown rice, wholemeal wheat, beans a pulses will help you process it. Get a daily dose of foods rich in vitamin D, which is associated with better moods and can be found in eggs, oily fish, and fortified cereals. And with Far North Queensland’s bountiful harvests don’t forget to get your daily dose of two serves of fruit and five serves of fresh veg a day. Five, sleep well. Far North Queenslanders are a hardworking bunch, but lack of sleep can hamper your happiness. The combined changeover of officers for the Lions Club of Atherton, Lions Club of Tolga and Atherton Lioness Club was held last Saturday, at Snibbles Restaurant, Tolga. The dinner was attended by almost 60 people, including the Hon Bob Katter, Federal Member for Kennedy and the Hon Shane Knuth, State Member for Dalrymple, both of whom are members of Lions Clubs themselves. Mayor of Tablelands Regional Council, Rosa Lee Long was pleased to propose a toast to kindred organisations, the toast replied to by incoming Atherton Rotary President Jo Barnes, one of the evening’s guests. Lions District Governor Gordon Bailey of Townsville Cleveland Bay Lions Club officially installed the new executive officers of the three clubs, after first inducting three new members to the Lions Club of Tolga. 2014-2015 Lions Club of Atherton President Jay Fraser ended his year in office by presenting cheques to Atherton Junior Golf Association and Atherton Eagles Football Club, continuing the Club’s tradition of supporting local youth in sport.

Gearing up for Tropical Food Safari Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth (left) was on hand to officially open the Malanda Horse and Pony Club’s new arena, with Club President Rodney Cockrem. Mr Cockrem was also awarded with life membership on the day.
Horse arena open day By Justin Fris THE Malanda Horse and Pony Club unveiled their brand new arena on June 27, off the back of unprecedented community support. Club treasurer Pam Evans said the event was a special celebration, with junior riders beginning the day with several demonstrations of their talent. “(Member for Dalrymple) Shane Knuth came down for the opening and oversaw the opening of the arena, on behalf of the sports minister, Bill Byrne. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long also attended, as the council have been very big sup-
porters of us.” Ms Evans explained that the entire process of the arena had actually been 13 years in the making – from the initial proposal to the old Eacham Shire, to the landmark occasion. “The TRC initially came on board in 2012 and contributed $30,000,” she said. “Qld Sport and Rec followed suit in 2013, when we were able to access $100,000 via ‘Get in the Game’ grant funding. “Local clubs were also able to contribute between $50-60,000 and the actual erection of the arena itself only took three weeks of dedicated volunteer time.”
Three Mareeba locals typify ANZAC spirit THREE Mareeba men, who have regularly gone beyond the call duty, were formally recognised on June 30 in Kuranda. Joe Taaffe, Shannon Procter and Edward Burns have been devout organisational volunteers of Kuranda’s ANZAC Day ceremony. All complete fundamental tasks to ensure the day goes smoothly, including: organising seating arrangements, setting up sunshades and even cooking breakfast. Mr Taaffe said he gained a lot from volunteering; and enjoyed playing his part in arguably the most important day of the Australian calendar. “I like it because you get to help the people who helped us,” Mr Taaffe said.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
“My favourite part of the day is knowing that I’ve helped other people.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore – who presided over the festivities – also praised the trio for their outstanding commitment to the ceremony. “The presentation of these certificates is in recognition of the extraordinary commitment by Eddie, Joe and Shannon in assisting preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli commemoration in Kuranda this year, and for their assistance in past Anzac Day services,” Cr Gilmore said “I am very pleased indeed to be able to recognise their efforts in a meaningful way.”
FOOD lovers across the Tablelands will be gearing up for the latest instalment of the ‘Tropical Food Safari’ at the Mareeba Heritage Centre. Held this Friday - the event is always extremely popular – and will take place between 10 and 11am. For those keen to attend, you must arrive before 10am. Mareeba Heritage Centre chairman Evan McGrath said: “Our volunteers are gearing this year’s presentations to our RV travellers.
“Whilst on their travels they will hopefully tell the rest of Australia what an abundance of tropical delights we have growing here in the Mareeba Shire.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was looking forward to another quality event held at the Heritage Centre. “We are delighted Mareeba Heritage Centre is holding this event again and their volunteers do a wonderful job in showcasing the tropical foods grown in the food bowl we have here in our region.”

Tourism Not Tractors
Response to rate rise article
The Queensland tourism industry is worth $10 billion to our state and provides around 236,000 jobs, many of which are in our beautiful tropical north. It is largely dependant upon intact natural environments including land and marine parks, World Heritage Areas, free-flowing rivers and the wealth of our unique wild life. Under the previous LNP Government land-clearing across Queensland tripled, with the associated loss of biodiversity, increased Co2 emissions and the degradation of catchment integrity. The new Labor Government's inaction to repeal destructive clearing laws sends the wrong message to domestic and international tourism. Denuded landscapes are “nothing to write home about” and discourage tourists. Slowly but surely across northern Australia we are repeating the mistakes of the past in the south, particularly that in the Murray-Darling Basin. Consequences there of over-clearing, soil loss, increased salinity and species extinction have been acutely felt for many years, creating large and ongoing costs to mitigate. Still the State and Federal Governments continue to “greenlight” ill-thought-out agricultural expansion across our north, ignoring the long-term environmental consequences and the economic viability of such schemes which have proved futile in the past. Valerie Weier – Malanda
I write to respond to The Express July 1 article headed “30.24 percent rise by 2017/18” referring to the recent budget and budget projections for the Tableland Regional Council. I agree with the general view of ratepayers quoted in the article; to the extent that this projection calls for a team effort by councilors and council staff to address costs which have led to the figures presented by the CEO, so that they do not become reality. In the article, the CEO outlined some of the expenditure areas where savings can be made. Divisive comment without alternatives being presented don’t achieve anything of value. My understanding is that the budget was approved on the casting vote of the Mayor (the “gang” according to Lyn O’Connor), but I also understand that no amendment or even suggestion for change was provided by the other three councilors who have been strongly supported by Lyn since de-amalgamation. Louise Pensini, who says her family owns twelve properties,
Dry July is here Dry July is here and we’re inviting you to get on the wagon for a good cause. All you need to do is go alcohol-free for a month, and donate the money you save to help those affected by cancer. If the suggestion of a month without alcohol gives you withdrawal symptoms, this campaign is especially for you. The benefits of going booze free are many. One, weight loss. It’s no secret that alcohol adds extra kilojoules to your daily energy intake. Even just one glass of wine has about 520kj and takes a 20 minute walk to burn off. Of concern, these are empty kilojoules, without the nutritional benefits and sense of fullness that you can get from 520kj of healthy food. It also quite famously makes us lose our inhibitions, making the decision to grab that slice of pizza all the more easy. Going dry for July is a great way to cleanse your body – load up on plenty of fresh fruit and veg, lentils and legumes, which will help reduce inflammation of cells and keep the body and bowels working. Stay hydrated with water and herbal teas and you’re guaranteed to enter August feeling fresh and invigorated. Two, sleep better. Having a nightcap might make you fall asleep faster, but after a few hours the alcohol wears off and your body will need rehydrating, causing you to wake. Alcohol can also exacerbate snoring, sleep apnea and other breathing disorders. Instead of a night cap go for a glass of unsweetened milk and remind yourself that you’ll be able to bounce out of bed bright and early for boot camp. Three, stress less. While there is nothing like a glass a vino after a stressful day at the office, overdoing it can make it more difficult to cope with stress. Alcohol reduces the body’s physiological stress response, and can make it more difficult for you to cope with stress. You might not know that alcohol is metabolised differently from other food and drinks, placing your body under undue stress, even if you’re fooled into feeling relaxed. Try alternative stress-reduction strategies, such as breathing exercises, yoga, tai chi, or meditation. Four, clearer skin. Alcohol dehydrates the body – including your body’s largest organ, the skin. Drinking in excess can deprive your skin of vital vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin A, which is responsible for cell renewal. This can result in dullness, dark circles, bloating and puffiness, premature aging, as well as rosacea. Five, better karma. By donating the money you’d normally spend on a night out, you can make a difference in the life of someone affected by cancer. There are plenty of ways to have alco-free fun. What more reason do you need? Go booze-free this month via www.dryjuly.com and give your mojo a much-needed boost. Katie Clift – Cancer Council Qld

infers that the burden of the increase should be carried by other ratepayers. Which ratepayers, Louise? Trevor Sorenson asked the question: “Why is it when we had no democratic vote on de-amalgamation, that we are being hit by a levy and forced to suffer the consequences”? I assume that Trevor is referring to the previous State Government’s decision to hold a referendum on whether or not there should be de-amalgamation. This is a question for the State Government, not Council. Given that a new Council will be elected in just eight months time, Trevor’s call for the appointment of an administrator by the new State Government is unlikely to meet with much success. Having announced that I will be nominating for consideration as a councilor at the next Council election, I am actively listening to suggestions from TRC ratepayers on how future budgets can keep costs to ratepayers to a minimum, while maintaining services. The LAND Katter pressurises State Government FEDERAL member for Kennedy Bob Katter has maintained his pressure on the Palaszczuk Government to put a serious mandate on ethanol. Mr Katter – who has attended a series of meetings across the state on the matter – said ethanol is required to help the sugar industry survive. “Ethanol is critical for our survival in the sugar industry. “We need a 10 per cent mandate in Queensland. Unless we can get ethanol we simply can’t survive in the longer term. “The closure of mills are destroying the economy of our homeland. Mourilyan gone, Babinda gone. “We are closing a sugar mill every two
years in Australia. Why? Because we can’t compete. “The value of our currency and the dollar plus massive direct subsidies in America and Europe make it impossible to compete. “India has a $23 million a year subsidy on fertiliser alone.” Mr Katter has again stated we need ethanol to compete and has called on Australia to look to the Brazil model. “The brazilians, if you take the price of petrol back to the farm gate (or mill gate) have been getting $420 per tonne. We get $340 per tonne. “Vast bulk of the brazilian cane goes to the ethanol stream, while ours goes to the sugar stream.”
New research initiative for mangoes HORTICULTURE Innovation Australia is putting forward a new research initiative - outlining the key aspects of the mango genome process – from the popular Kensington Pride brand. The project – a world first in some of its facets, will completely outline the full mango genome timeline; which will provide greater understanding of mango genetics as we know it. Several factors and trends within mango growing are expected to be expanded upon within the research. HIA CEO John Lloyd said: “It is critical to develop modern innovative
tools to enhance crop productivity in Australian horticulture. “This project will do exactly that by providing research scientists with a better understanding when handling complex genomes such as mango.” International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics director general Dr David Bergvinson added: “The results from this research will help develop improved mango varieties and methods, with the potential to provide all mango farmers additional ways to generate income.”

Voices of the Arena As the Mareeba Rodeo gets into gear, the three tenors (or be it) ring announcers, Peter Brown, together with Darryl and Kurt Chaplain (pictured above) are polishing up their voices for the big event. Peter Brown has been a bull ride and Rodeo announcer for eight years across Far North Queensland and is passionate about his profession. “When I announce, it’s as though I am sitting in the stands. I want to know about the cowboys, the bulls and horses and I want it to be exciting and entertaining. “It’s all about entertaining nowadays; the hardest thing is when to talk and not talk, but it’s important that it’s action packed. “We will take it in turn between the three of us, so the energy level is up there all the time. “I love the sport of rodeo and I love to help people out and do my community bit.” Ring announcer and entertainer Darryl Chaplain, a veteran of 43 years, said: “It’s important that everybody in the

audience at the event feel like they are part of the action of what’s going on in the arena; that’s my whole objective. “I learnt that from my father who was a ring announcer for a very long time. “It’s making that Average Joe in the seat feel like they’re part of the action. “It’s pleasing to see the events succeed and see the younger ones coming on and to help the rodeo be a big success.” The young buck of the team is Darryl’s son Kurt, who also learnt from his dad; and has been announcing for 12 years. “On the rodeo circuit you get to know most of the competitors and it makes it easier to talk about them in the ring,” he said. “It’s all about having a passion for the sport and understanding the riders and what they have to do to get where they’re going.” Be sure to catch all the rodeo action this weekend at Kerribee Park and take the time to applaud the efforts of the ring announcers.

2015 MAREEBA RODEO JULY 10-12
Rodeo action all weekend!!
Protection Clowns compeition With only days to go until the 66th annual Mareeba Rodeo, President Jim Blakeney relects on his 31 years as President of the Mareeba Rodeo Association and welcomes one and all in 2015.
As the 66th annual Mareeba Rodeo approaches, I reflect on the 31 years I have been President of this great local organisation; and the wonderful people I have come to know, both privately and through the many committee members we have had over the years. The Mareeba Rodeo has grown from humble beginnings in 1949 at Davies Park, when we had to breed our own stock to keep the rodeo afloat, because we couldn’t afford to bring stock in. Since the move to Kerribee Park in 1979, a lot of blood sweat and tears by many locals went into the venue we see today. The work continues, thanks to the tireless committee and band of travelling volunteers who come from all over the country. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors who support the event, the many volunteers, whom without, the rodeo would simply not take place; and finally the people who attend to make the rodeo one of the best in the land. I would like to wish all the queen entrants best of luck and to their sponsors a huge thank you for making the effort to add colour and glamour to this wonderful event. To all the businesses who have participated in the spirit of the
Mareeba Rodeo, thank you. To those who entered the competition as part of the Agricultural Show, thank you for your continued support. To the matrons of honour who do a terrific job with all the queen contestants, the competitors and the general public, our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support. We trust that you all have a wonderful time at the big downtown parade on Friday night and all the thrills and spills of the action packed rodeo on the weekend. We have also added fireworks during the rodeo to add some extra colour and excitement. Spectators will be please to know that for the first time this year we will have a big screen so every spectator can see the action from any vantage point. Please come along and kick up you heels at the cabaret on Saturday night and enjoy the festivities. Finally I would like to thank Angela Sturgess our secretary, my wife Shirley and our current committee members whose tireless efforts will be there for all to see over the coming days. Please enjoy and stay safe. Jim Blakeney President, Mareeba Rodeo Association
Contestants are judged on their protection ability during the Bull Ride. This is the only sport in the world where competition is based on saving lives and preventing injuries. During a bull ride, the clown relies on his athletic ability, precision timing and the ability to think and make decisions in milliseconds. These are choices that could mean life or death for either himself or the bull rider. Points are awarded for anticipating the moves of the bull and extracting the bull and rider to safety once he has dismounted.

Secretary of the Mareeba Rodeo Association Angela Sturgess is encouraging more families to take advantage of free entry for children under the age of 11 at the 2015 Mareeba Rodeo. With families finding it difficult to meet the everyday rising costs, the Mareeba Rodeo Committee is trying to make it easier by reducing the entrance fee for children. The Rodeo Committee has changed the age group for a child, so that children 11 years and under on the Rodeo weekend have free entry

This change means that the Colouring Competition is no longer being held and therefore more families will be better off. MAREEBA NEWS 2014 royalty: Mareeba Rodeo Queen Rachel Whiteing (centre), Princess Lucy Ferguson (left) and Miss Popularity Kimberlee Hunter (right).
First introduced in 1959, the Mareeba Rodeo Queen compeition has seen thousands of young ladies participate and has been running strong ever since. Miss Noela Connolly was crowned the first ever Rodeo Queen, with Mrs Willie Nieuwenhius as the Matron of Honour. Fast forward 55 years and in 2014 Rachel Whiteing was crowned Mareeba Rodeo Queen at the Friday night downtown parade. Rachel looks back at her time representing Mareeba Rodeo and the district with fond memories. “It was excellent working with all the girls in the workshops and we got a kick out of presenting sashes and prize to winners.” said Ms Whiteing. “We made lots of new friends and gained a lot of confidence in present-
ing ourselves better in public. “It will be great to hand over the crown and a pleasure to hand it to the new winner this year. “All I can say to the new entrants is have fun, make the most of everything and above all just be yourself.” Last year’s Rodeo Princess Lucy Ferguson has similar memories. “It was amazing, so well organised, it was wonderful to meet new people and forge new friendships. “My confidence grew in public speaking and just when meeting people the shyness disappeared, it really brought out the best in me. “I hope this year’s entrants get as much out of the quest as I did.” The 2015 Rodeo Queen, princess and Miss Popularity will be crowned after the Mareeba Mazda Downtown parade on Friday night.

FNQ Golf Championships held in Mareeba

THE cream of FNQ golf rose to the top during last weekend’s FNQ Golf Championships at the Mareeba Golf Club. Day one saw the devout faithful from across the Far North head to the club nice and early; and the big names came out firing from the start in the FNQ Champion of Champions event. Perennial favourite Frank Power continued his excellent run of form in Mareeba, firing a superb 72 on the opening day. Power held a four stroke advantage over local Boyd Ellams, who has been turning several heads over the past year. In B-grade, Atherton Golf Clubbased Hayden Lee again topped the field, with his surefire 84. Lee took a three stroke advantage going into day two, ahead of Bruce Gilmore. Results on the final day of the competition were as follows: 2015 Club Teams Challenge: Win-

Dimbulah Dolphins benefit from local Men’s Shed By Justin Fris
THE Dimbulah Dolphins Swimming Club received a $700 donation from the Tablelands Men’s Shed (Dimbulah district) last Wednesday afternoon. Dimbulah – who has provided a stable of quality swimmers over the years – will benefit greatly from the donation. Dolphins treasurer Maxine Smith said: “The swimming club has been fundraising to have our own indoor training area. “At the present moment, we need to extend our area that we have covered and make it bigger; so we can put in gym equipment. “This is so our kids can do training; There are times when we have storms and they can’t actually use the pools. “There are also different coaching methods using
that sort (indoor-based training) of stuff, which can improve muscle development. “This contribution to us will greatly help our cause.” Ms Smith agreed that the new facilities would greatly benefit all members, but especially those who compete at state level. “We had Zoe McDermott, Toby Brown, Ashleigh and Callum Zunio go down to the state championships; which was the first time we’ve had four representatives. “We’re hoping it will increase our club membership because swimming doesn’t usually attract a lot of boys. “If they know they can ‘buff’ up a little bit using the weights; we’re hoping that may attract them as well.”

IVANHOES’ sub-par performance against the Mareeba Gladiators a fortnight ago is now a distant memory. The home side completed their form reversal on Saturday night, with a comprehensive 48-0 victory over the Atherton Roosters. Knowing that winning consistently will only deliver a spot in the finals, the Roosters were unable to quell their opponents in the middle of the field. The Roosters – who had several players out through injury prior to kick-off- suffered further inconvenience, with three more injuries to deal with during the game. This severely compromised their ability to have a fully functioning interchange bench; which greatly benefited the home side. Roosters senior official Darryl Day said that Jamie Blain’s men will have two key inclusions for this Saturday’s trip to Innisfail, with both Jacob Rivett and Dean Howard available for selection.

Local athletes continue to achieve By Justin Fris
SEVERAL local athletes are continuing to push their bodies and minds to the absolute limit and are absolutely delighted about it. Participating in the recent Cairns Ironman weekend with his teammates, local chiropractor Matthew Jacob said preparation for the event was critical. “Generally, preparation for an event like this is normally about six months,” he said. “Training equates to about 10-15 hours per week, and you have to remember, many are also holding down full-time jobs and have families.” After breaking his Clavicle (collarbone) earlier in the year, Mr Jacob said this impacted on his preparation to the event.
“I was only able to get two months of preparation,” he said. “On the actual race day, the conditions were really trying; it was very windy and wet.” In order to train for a major half or full ironman event, Mr Jacob said it was important to start with a base level of fitness and slowly build up over time. As intensity is slowly injected into the training regime, the athlete can ensure they peak at the right time; and ensure optimal performance on race day. Mr Jacob said he loved training with all of his teammates, with all of them very experienced in completing each particular discipline. The entire team would love to see more individuals across the Tablelands join them in training and improve the profile of a growing sport within our region.

SPECTATORS enjoyed a quality afternoon of motorsport, with another solid meeting at the Mareeba Speedway last Sunday. Now officially aligned with Speedway Australia – the local track will only appeal even further to talented drivers throughout the region. In the juniors competition, Eric Wallace topped the charts, closely followed by Ashleigh Hardy and Hamish Furrow. Hardy would eventually take out the feature race later in the afternoon.
C-grade only had two drivers competing for glory, with Terry Vilella too good for William Tudini in both qualify and the feature. It was difficult to split Mark Alba and George Tichborne all afternoon in B-grade, with honours shared between both men across both disciplines. Ben Cross was a crowd favourite and took out Agrade honours; although he had a tough time holding off Bryan Lobegeiga and Russell Equinox. In the Formula 500’s, it was all Billy Foyle, who took out both events; while Kylie Roesa was victorious in the Outlaw Sprints feature race.

Injury overshadows Gladiators victory By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Gladiators easily accounted for an unfit Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks last Saturday night at Davies Park, running out 44-20 winners. Despite sharing the spoils of a comfortable victory, Gladiators faithful had their thoughts with Shana Aue, who suffered a serious leg injury only a minute into the second half. Aue fell awkwardly in a solid tackle after surging toward the Sharks’ tryline. He was assisted by local paramedics onto a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance; his family by his side. Gladiators president Andrew Foster said that medical staff informed him that Aue had done sizeable damage to both his tibia and fibia, which will end his 2015 season. With only two minutes on the clock, it appeared evident that the visitors were in for a long night. Their lack of fitness and linespeed at times was not up to A-grade standard; and was duly punished three minutes later. After a Frank Koroi knock-on gifted the Sharks great field position near the Gladiators line, the visitors consequently fumbled off the scrum and gifted the ball to Jack Pedersen. Pedersen simply torched the lacklustre
defence as he stormed down the field, with exciting fullback Drystan Hayes putting the finishing touches on the attack. This try would be one of four that the home side would score in a brutally efficient eight minutes of football. Four tries in a row from four sets without reaching the last tackle of the set is an outstanding economy rate; perhaps in future, the Gladiators might list on the stock exchange. But it was the last of the four tries which would ultimately sum up how the match played out. On the 4th tackle – with David Grainer charging for the hosts – no fewer than six Sharks players were offside by 40m. At times – even with possession of the ball – the Sharks only had three players onside to play the ball, as the others were that far off the play. But even with the most difficult of equations, there is always an exception to the rule. And Keenan Grogan made this point clear. Defending yet another set from the surging Gladiators, Grogan leapt in front of an errant pass and returned the favour at the other end; and let the crowd know about it. Grogan’s deeds were then amplified further only three minutes later, when David Oui was able to burst his way through and further slice into the home side’s lead.
But, the home supporters had little need to bite their fingernails, as halfback Dwayne Williams provide the highlight of the night. After tearing a non-existent defensive line apart, Williams was simply majestic as he delicately chipped a perfect drop punt over Sharks fullback Peter Tuccingdee and dove enthusiastically in celebration once he scored. The visitors briefly returned serve in the 36th minute, with Oui crossing over for his second try; but the evident lack of fitness put grave doubts over their ability to bridge the gap. After Aue’s injury, the game naturally lost much of its zest. Even the crowd – who normally leave only after the game – headed for the exits midway during the second half. For those who remained in the grandstand, they were treated to three more Gladiators tries, with Tom Hughes scoring a double, along with some superb work from William Dodd. Tonga Kose’s reserve grade took another big step toward a potential finals appearance, after a 34-22 win over the Sharks, while the U/18’s suffered defeat yet again. Gladiators players will have a rest this week due to the bye and will play their next match against Yarrabah on Sunday, July 19 at Davies Park, with kick off at 3pm.

MUFC are ‘unstopp-a-bull’ right now By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club created a major psychological wedge between themselves and fellow title contenders Stratford last Saturday evening at Nick Brko field. The 2-0 victory – which now sees the Bulls eight points clear of the 2nd placed Dolphins – was played at a frenetic pace from the off. End to end, plenty of chances and two hungry sides always makes for a quality evening of football, with Alex Srhoj’s men snapping their recent winless streak in Stratford. Stratford coach Stuart Veall is not a man who leaves anything in the tank and his charges could have been up 2-0 within the opening 10 minutes – with both Matt Bowman and Michael van Horen going close. After weathering the early storm - the visitors began to find their feet and create several notable chances – before David Ruiz made his mark. Chasing a seemingly lost cause, Ruiz complimented his good
work by turning Dolphins defender Shane Raso inside out. Once Raso was successfully sidestepped, Ruiz telegraphed his brilliant finish past veteran keeper Angelo Serafin. MUFC’s astute tactician Alex Srhoj said the second goal was something that couldn’t be bought at your local supermarket. “With Wayne’s (Srhoj) set piece, he just put the ball down, looked up briefly and spoke to the referee,” he said. After receiving approval from the referee, Srhoj quickly took advantage of a napping defence and curled his free-kick past a stunned Dolphins defence; with many still scratching their heads. Even with a 2-0 deficit to contend with, Veall is not a man who eyeballs or accepts defeat. He promptly reverted to a 3-3-4 formation, which tested the visitors’ application in defence. With the hosts so determined to bridge the gap, it allowed for the Bulls to counter attack on several occasions - and add further distance between the teams. Naturally, Srhoj said he was delighted with the result. But, he believes all the talk of sealing the minor premiership should be put on hold for now.
“Mathematically are we champions? The answer is no,” he said, “So until mathematically the numbers say we are champions, we will be; but until that moment nothing will change.” A day after the impressive victory, Srhoj reflected on several elements that his charges could take forward to Sunday’s clash with the Marlin Coast Rangers. “We’ve endured some ups and downs,” he said. “We’ve had our fair share of players out; Wayne actually had a sore back this week and Alex Plowman played his first game back this week. “The reserves really turned it on again this week, which gave all players a further reminder to work hard and continue to set the bar high.” But above all, Srhoj is pleased about the current level of depth across the club. He made two late substitutions, with David Cater and Anthony Mete having a tremendous impact when given an opportunity. The Bulls will return home this Sunday and play against the cellar dweller Marlin Coast Rangers. Games start at 10am at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Borzi Park.
