IF there was ever any doubt of the popularity of bull riding it was put to rest in Mareeba on Saturday night at Round One of The Great Northern Bullriding series.

A huge crowd of more than 1000 was on hand at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds for all the thrills and spills that only a bull ride can deliver. TURNING 100 is an amazing achievement for any individual, yet it is made all the more special when you get to do so surrounded by loved ones.

That was the case for Mareeba local Thelma Seres, who celebrated her milestone at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Saturday with dozens of family and friends, many of whom travelled far and wide for the occasion.

To know more about Thelma and the enormous impact she has had on those close to her and the community at large, you need to take a look back at where it all began.

Thelma Jane Seres (Kattenberg) was born to parents Edward and Agnes Kattenberg at the St Thomas Private Hospital on Alice Street, Atherton on April 1, 1919, and was the youngest of three children, having two older brothers Victor and Lennord.

Thelma was raised on the family farm on Kattenberg Road, Kairi and attended school on Tinaroo Falls Dam Road.

In 1943, she married her husband George Seres and over a year later, their daughter Irene was born.

Thelma’s time spent as a member of the Mareeba community began in 1961, after her and George sold their farm in Japoonville where they had been for 16 years prior.

Thelma was an extremely active member in the community, having been a member and/or volunteer of the Mareeba Bowls Club, the Masonic Lodge OES, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Senior Citizens and the Hospital Auxiliary Ladies.

However it was her involvement with the RSL Women’s Auxiliary where she arguably made her greatest impact, so

much so she was made a Life Member.

Thelma’s propensity to give back was why she garnered so much respect according to her grandchild Elaine Hammond.

“Grandma was one of those ladies that if something was happening in the community, she’d be a part of it,” she said.

“She was a very social lady and would put her hand up to help out whenever or wherever it was needed.

“We have always said in our family that if anyone was going to make it to 100 it would be Grandma, she’s a very tough, happy and positive lady who has been such an inspiration to everyone in our family.

“It is such a privilege to be celebrating today with her.”

Elaine noted that she would like to thank her mother Irene Stainkey who now lives with

Thelma and is her sole carer.

“Mum does so much for Grandma so I would like to take this opportunity to thank and recognise her for everything she does,” she said.

Irene Stainkey is Thelma’s only child and spoke about her mother’s standing in the community as well as their motherdaughter relationship.

“She was very well-liked in the community,” she said.

“She was always helping people in the community, especially with voluntary work and I think that’s why there’s so many people here today celebrating this occasion.

“As a mother, she was a very positive person and has been such a great a role model to me and all of her grandchildren.”

And for those wondering what the key to longevity in life may be, Irene noted happiness,

gardening and the occasional drink as the possible answer.

“She was alway happy and loved to keep herself busy in the garden,” she said.

“And she also loved her daily glass of scotch, she would sit down at 4 o’clock with dad everyday and have a drink - she is even having one here today,” she laughed.

Thelma is yet another example of the wonderful community members Mareeba boasts, and the glowing nature with which her daughter and grandchildren speak about her is a testament to the enormous impact she has had and continues to have on their lives.

Preserving our aviation history FAR North Queensland Aviation Museum members, local supporters and Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore gathered at the Mareeba Airport on Saturday for an update on how things are progressing with the building of the FNQ Aviation Museum.

The FNQ Aviation Museum concept is one that was formalised last year, and is aimed at providing Mareeba residents and tourists a look back in time at the abundance of aviation history the region boasts.

FNQ Aviation Museum Director Brendan Kent said Mareeba has a vast aviation history that needs to be showcased.

“I’m disappointed that our region’s aviation history is not on display to the public,” he said.

“Not only will it be beneficial to the surrounding aviation businesses, the museum will inspire young kids to want to know more about the different aspects of aviation.”

Mr Kent said the FNQ Aviation Museum has been allocated a space by the Mareeba Shire Council as part of the Mareeba Airport development; however he noted the museum may not get off the ground unless they receive the necessary funding.

“We are fortunate to have been given great support on all levels - that being local, state and the federal government,” he said.

“We’re currently waiting to hear back in the next month on a grant that will enable us to do concept drawings, building ar-

chitecture and engineering.

“In addition, the support from the community has been fantastic and we’re extremely appreciative of their help in trying to secure an aviation museum for the region.”

Mr Kent said he is hoping to commission an economic impact report to illustrate definitive data on what sort of impact it will have for Mareeba from both a local and tourism standpoint.

“The museum will consist of

a lot of displays,” he said.

“Everything such as the use of lighting, video walls, interactive displays, theatre and technology will be available and will cater for people of all ages.

“While this is a great thing

for those living on the Tablelands, we also see it in the way of a major tourist attraction, so we strongly feel now is the time for something like this in Mareeba.”

Mr Kent said the FNQ Aviation Museum will be run as a not-

for-profit organisation, with the hope of having it up and running by 2021 at the earliest.

In the near future a small museum of what you can expect to see will be open in the meantime.

Dissecting the Federal Budget

AS the Liberal National Party’s Federal Budget was handed down last week, pertinent questions have immediately been raised as to its positive and negative aspects and how it affects our region.

ROADS Roads projects in Tropical North Queensland totalling $707.2 million were highlighted in the budget. $287.2m for upgrading the Captain Cook Highway as the first stage of the Cairns Ring Road $190m for Stage 2 of the Peninsula Development Road $180m for Stage 5 of the Southern Access Road $50m for the Gulf Savannah Way Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said Far North Queensland would heavily benefit from the biggest infrastructure spend in the nation’s history.

“As I said it would be, funding for the Captain Cook Highway, Cairns Southern Access Corridor, Gulf Savannah Way and the Peninsula Development Road is contained in this year’s budget,” he said.

“This is about busting congestion to improve our way of life and to ensure families in Far North Queensland can get home easier and safer.

“This is all possible because of the Morrison Government’s strong economic and budget management.”

Advance Cairns CEO Nick Trompf lauded the announcement, describing them as unprecedented for one Federal Budget.

“Add this to the $50 million by the Government last week for the Hann Highway and the expected matching Queensland Government contribution of of $151 million and the total roads spend tops $900 million,” Mr Trompf said.

Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter also noted that whilst it is not notorious, the Mareeba bypass is vital. “That is a project we will be going after with super aggression,” he said.

When Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison parlayed his ‘back in black’ message (alluding to this being the first budget to record a surplus in 12 years), it was met with praise from some and scepticism from

others.

As it relates to northern Queensland, key components covered in the 2019 Federal Budget include water, dams, roads, biosecurity, agriculture and disaster recovery among

The Federal Government increased its investment through the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund to more than $1.3 billion to build water infrastructure.

Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said all we want is the freedom to use our balance of power to secure ‘operating cost only’ for electricity.

“Currently $2500 per year per household will be reduced to under $700,” he said.

“The silly nature of solar panels and subsidies and the ‘save the planet brigade’ and the most outrageous profiteering by the State Government – takes it up to costs of $3000 million a year in what is just a secret tax and falls part heavily on young families and our retirees.

“These are the last people on the planet we should be taxing.”

Despite the good news as it relates to the overall funding increase, a prominent project which has been in the pipeline for years did not receive funding.

Advance Cairns CEO Nick Trompf said the Government has earmarked $1.3 billion for the National Water Infrastructure Fund and a further $2 billion in a water infrastructure loan facility – but did not allocate any funding towards Nullinga Dam. “We are disappointed but not surprised by Nullinga Dam not being referenced in the budget – the Building Queensland detailed business case won’t be released until mid-year so the final scope and cost of the dam is not yet clear,” he said.

“Once that business case is released we will re-double our efforts to secure Nullinga funding.”

“This package includes $11.4 million to break through the technical and scientific trade barriers so Australian fruit and vegetables can get market access into more countries, faster.”

“Mr Littleproud said trade is key to growing our agricultural sector and if we reach the goal of $100 billion over the next decade this will set us up with more jobs and opportunity for our kids.

“We will also continue to support market access requests and enhanced food safety to ensure we capture the gains from new free trade agreements, meet importing country requirements and maintain our clean, green reputation,” he said.

RESEARCH

WHILE some believe Scott Morrison’s and the LNP’s Federal Budget was a last-ditch effort to win the election expected in May, there are certainly plenty of people who are set to benefit from it, in particular Queenslanders.

Most notably of which includes an enormous infrastructure spend to the tune of $2.6 billion from 2020-21, on what the Government calls “priority regional and urban transport infrastructure”.

What some may call a fair and timely investment in Queensland, there are also others who see it as a campaign to win the vote of a key battleground state.

With many of the Queensland seats on knife-edge margins, the pros and cons of the Federal Budget may for many be the deciding factor.

On the other hand, Bill Shorten’s budget response could stifle any potential momentum gained by the Morrison Government since their budget announcement. However, if any of the key points of Shorten’s response such as tax reform are perceived as a classic case of one-upmanship, it could act as a disservice.

With just over a month to go before the next federal election, it seems only time will tell whose budget promises truly spoke to voters.

The 2019-20 Federal Budget is an ambitious one, with key forecasts including a $7.1 BILLION SURPLUS, an ECONOMIC GROWTH OF 2.75 PER CENT, an UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OF 5 PER CENT and an INFLATION OF 2.25 PER CENT, and is one which is sure to remain a talking point in the lead-up to the May election.

New midwife service delivering for families

FIFTY five women cared for by their known midwife, have given birth in the Atherton Women’s Unit since the implementation of a new Midwifery Group Practice at the Atherton Hospital five months ago.

Thirty baby boys and 25 baby girls have been born under the collaborative model that provides women with a continuity of midwifery carer; with support from doctors and the multi-disciplinary health team.

“There is strong evidence the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model of care provides better outcomes for mothers and babies and gives women a more positive birth experience,” said Atherton MGP midwife Tanya Fleming.

“Numbers are looking good for the Atherton MGP, with bookings up by 18% from this time last year and an expected overall increase in birthing numbers for 2019.”

Atherton Hospital’s Midwifery Unit Manager Dean Stevens echoed Ms Fleming’s sentiments, as he noted the enormous impact MGP has had on mother’s from the region.

“The Midwifery Group Prac-

tice has built a real feeling of community, and it’s wonderful that mothers have access to a high standard of care,” he said.

“And I want to thank the entire community and midwifery team at the Atherton Hospital for their enormous support and efforts since MGP began.”

The Atherton Midwives and Mother’s Alliance (AMAMA) invited staff and community members to gather for a morning tea to celebrate the success of the new model and thanked the community members and staff who have contributed to bettering local maternity services in Atherton.

“We’ve had amazing support from the Atherton Hospital staff, as well as community and Tablelands businesses, which have made generous donations and raised funds to help AMAMA,” said AMAMA representative Marama Taudevin.

“Both the former AMAMA representative Heidi Brennan and I had positive experiences with the Continuity of Midwifery Carer model in 2018.

“AMAMA’s focus in 2019 will be about ensuring that the consumers of the Atherton Wom-

en’s Unit continue to be listened to through our involvement in the new Midwifery Group Practice Governance meetings, which allow us to have ongoing input to the progression of maternity services.

Marama said local businesses have got behind the group’s re-vamped 150 AMAMA gift packs which will be given to every woman birthing in the Atherton Hospital.

Monthly AMAMA Circles are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 9-11am in the Annie Brown Garden at Atherton Hospital including a guest speaker, providing women a safe place to meet with other mums and grow their support network.

“Our presence at the hospital also gives us a sense of “home” and a feeling of safety and connection to the place we have chosen to birth,” Marama said.

The partnership, which began in March, consists of monthly visits and is aimed at providing residents with the opportunity to share their memories of Mareeba and the Tablelands to keep the history of the region alive according to the General Manager Blue Care Far North Queensland Liz Brown.

“Many of our residents have a lifetime of memories to share and the resources of the His-

torical Society help them engage with their past,” she said.

“Our residents are excited by the opportunity to discuss their lives and tell their stories and are already looking forward to the next catch up.”

Ms Brown also noted that she would like to thank those at the Historical Society of Mareeba for giving the residents such a wonderful opportunity.

‘Catch Me If You Can’ Mareeba mentoring program fostering strong connections between students and police

INDIGENOUS students from Mareeba State High School have recently taken part in the mentoring program ‘Catch Me If You Can’ at PCYC Mareeba, aimed at fostering strong connections between young people and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

Designed to use sport to develop and improve relationships between Indigenous school students and local police, Catch Me If You Can is an innovative youth mentoring program unique to PCYC Queensland.

As part of the 8-week program, students were matched with a police officer of their choice and participated in team building activities and weekly games of ‘Edor’, an Indigenous chasing and tagging game, allowing students and police officers to get to know each other in a healthy environment.

PCYC Mareeba branch manager Sergeant Mary-Anne West says the program is a great foundation for building positive relationships, as students learn from mentors including PCYC Queensland Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Officers, Youth Justice staff and local police officers.

“I have seen so much improvement in communication and manners from the students that have attended Catch Me If You Can,” said Sergeant West.

“The young people that participated are now more engaged and willing to talk about what’s going on in their lives and at school,” she said.

Program participant Jennifer Iles was very supportive of the program, saying it helped her speak in front of people more freely.

“I really enjoyed this program

because it gave us something fun to do and something to look forward to. I liked that they involved all of us mob and treated us equally with the same amount of respect,” said Ms Iles.

Another participant Hope Vinck, said the program taught her more about roles as individuals, and as communities, and the importance of teamwork.

“I liked how involved everyone was in this program, the mentors are amazing and very supportive, and the program helped me build more confidence within myself,” said Ms Vinck.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes also lauded the initiative.

“Our PCYC here in Mareeba have been so successful with this program,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful initiative that encourages engagement with our indigenous people and

police force.

“It has led to great relationships being built and it is something I am in full support of moving forward.”

Inspector Rhodes said he would like to recognise PCYC Mareeba’s Sergeant Mary-Anne West and the staff for their fantastic work throughout the program.

Tableland Canegrowers recognised TABLELAND Canegrowers Ltd. recently held its annual Productivity Awards Night for Tableland Mossman Mill Suppliers. A large number of growers and sponsors attended the evening which included guest speakers and the awards presentation.

Tableland Canegrowers Chair Maryann Salvetti congratulated growers on an extremely productive 2018 season, with the 6000 series Tableland growers averaging110.11 tc/ha with a relative tonnes of sugar per hectare of 15.70 and a season average relative CCS of 14.26.

She also made special mention of the 31 growers who averaged above 100tc/ha for the 2018 season.

The first guest speaker for the evening Cameron Begley, Managing Director of Spiegare provided an introduction to a Bio Based Economy.

His presentation focused

around the role that biomass such as sugarcane will play in providing a renewable source of carbon-based fuels and chemicals into the future. He also explained the emerging value chain and the economics and market access.

The second presentation for the evening was from Emilie Fillols and Belinda Billing from Sugar Research Australia. They provided an update on the results of trial work being conducted around off-site movement of herbicides and insecticides due to heavy rainfall events, with the take home messages from this presentation being that rate and timing of application are critical.

Salvetti Farming took out the major prize for the evening as they received The Outstanding Canegrower Award, to go along with the Champion Farm 200+ha Award and runner up to the Highest Farm Relative CCS

Award.

Other notable winners on the night include father and son team Gerald and Dean DeLai, who received the Best Presented Farm and the Achievement Award for consistent productivity.

They also finished runner up for the Champion Farm 50 – 100ha.

ORGANISERS from the Far North Queensland branch of the Make A Wish foundation made a special hamper presentation with a tractor to young Nate Moule in the car park at the Baptist Church carpark in Mareeba on Friday.

Tableland residents may be familiar with the story of Nate Moule, a tough toddler who at just two years of age has already had radical resection surgery by globally renowned Australian neurosurgeon, Charlie Teo in the hope of removing all traces of a malignant genetic embryonic brain tumour.

On Friday Nate, along with his friends and family celebrated the success of his treatment so far with a special Make A Wish foundation hamper to be delivered by a tractor because of Nate’s love of tractors.

“He also loves Paw Patrol, PJ Masks, play doh and painting,” his mother Katie Moule said.

Katie, who also has two teenage daughters, says that the diagnosis last October has greatly affected their family.

“We don’t talk about the

prognosis. No two children are the same so you just have to have faith and believe Nate will be fine,” she said.

Joe Vella, Deputy Chairman of the Far North Queensland branch of the Make A Wish Australia foundation for over 10 years, was in attendance for Nate’s party.

“It’s hard to describe the feelings being part of these events brings but in the end, seeing the joy we can bring to these children, fulfilling their wishes, you have to focus on that”, he said.

Make A Wish Far North Queensland President Trish Thomson was ecstatic with the turn-out.

“I want to thank the community for their enormous support of this event,” she said.

“Days like today are so beneficial for the children, as it allows them to focus on something other than just being stuck in the hospital.”

Ms Thomson said Make A Wish Far North Queensland are hoping for more volunteers to come on board.

“We are always looking for volunteers, particularly on the Tablelands,” she said.

“So those wanting to get involved are more than welcome to come to our meetings and from there we will put them through the necessary training and proceed from there.”

Make A Wish Australia grants wishes to Australian children and teens aged between three and 18 years old. Younger children are eligible to receive a Wish hamper, which is a selection of age-appropriate toys for children under three.

Each year thousands of Australian children are diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and Make A Wish foundations’ mission is to create a life-changing wish for every one of them.

There are currently 700 kids on a Wish Journey in 2019 in Australia, 13 of whom live in the Cairns and Tablelands area.

Glyphosate spraying should stop

The use of Roundup and similar herbicide sprays on roadsides has to be made illegal by government at all levels.

This insidious toxic chemical weedkiller is causing great harm in our world and the evidence is real, proven by scientific evidence to cause Lymphoma Cancer in humans.

Cancer is now the Number One Killer of Children and New Born Babies it was reported on the news, with 9,000 cases of Lymphoma Worldwide.

Our TRC Council must surely have read the evidence and seen the lawsuits ongoing in the USA where users of Glyphosate are dying with Lymphoma a cancer of the blood, it won't be long before councils are being taken to court with our local TRC workers claiming millions in damages for their exposure to this insidious herbicide, then we the residents will have to pay through our rates because of Councils incompetence.

Frankly I find it incredible that our Council could ignore the evidence and continue spraying when we see little benefit for its use, surely the tractor slashers are adequate for the purpose and do far less damage to nature.

1. Combine yeast and warm water in a large bowl.

2. Using a wooden spoon add in 1 cup of the flour and then the salt and mix until combined. Stir in the rest of the flour, one cup at a time, until completely incorporated.

3. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid that is not shut completely. Allow to rise for 1 hour.

4. Do not punch down the dough. Lightly oil the bottom of a cast iron skillet and srinkle a good amount of flour on top of the dough and then cover hands with flour. Take all of the dough and shape into a disk.

5. Place in the skillet, cover loosely with a towel, and allow to rise for another 30 minutes and preheat the oven to 180ºC. 6. Drizzle a little more oil over the top of the bread, and slash the dough with a knife creating an X. Sprinkle with coarse salt and rosemary leaves.

7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is a deep brown color.

Brydie to be tested on the state stage

Mareeba gymnasts Brydie Genge will travel to Brisbane this weekend for the State Championships.

MORE than 50 gymnasts tested themselves against some of the best in the region as they competed in the 2019 North Queensland Senior Regional Championships in Townsville last weekend.

One such gymnast who took part in the tournament was Mareeba local and Mareeba Gymnastics Club member Brydie Genge.

Brydie competed in the U15s category and finished in fourth place, having tallied scores of 11.25 in the vault, 9.65 on the bars, 9.3 on the beam and 11.9 on the floor, thus securing an overall total of 42.1 across all four disciplines.

Brydie said she was pleased with her performance in Townsville.

“There were a lot of good gymnasts at Regionals so it was a good test for me,” she said.

“I was happy to finish fourth overall and to finish third on floor – I went better than I expected.”

Brydie’s fourth place finish earned her the right to compete at this weekend’s State Championships which will be held at the Sleeman’s Sport Centre in Brisbane, and while that may be daunting for some, Brydie appears to have taken it in her stride.

“I’m really excited,” she said.

“It’s my first senior State Championships so I’m really

looking forward to it and hopefully I’ll do well.”

Brydie also took time to thank those who have played a pivotal role in her success.

“I would like to thank my coaches, especially Kelly (Tulloch) who brought me down to Regionals,” she said.

“And I also want to thank my parents.”

Mareeba Gymnastics Club Director Kelly Tulloch accompanied Brydie on the trip to Townsville and will be doing so again for this weekend’s competition in Brisbane.

Tulloch noted how impressed she was with Brydie’s performance last weekend.

“This is the first year that Brydie has attended Regionals at the senior level, so for her to place is amazing,” she said.

“She’s trained really hard so it’s great to see her rewarded for her effort.”

Brydie’s and Tullloch’s attention has now well and truly turned to this weekend’s event in Brisbane.

“We’ve got a little bit of improvement we hope to make before Brydie competes,” she said.

“So Brydie has been back in gym since Regionals and putting in a lot of hours to best prepare, and our expectation for Brisbane is to compete in four apparatus’ in full with no injury, all while gaining valuable experience.”

Erik Wallace has continued his stellar form after winning the Top Stars category at Toowoomba recently.

Erik’s performance was made all the more impressive as he convincingly beat the lap record, doing so in a lightning quick 16.766 seconds.

Erik’s record marked the first time a junior had made the 16 second bracket, topping off what was a fantastic tournament for the 15 year-old who went undefeated in seven races.

Erik said he was stoked to have won the Top Stars division.

“We have a great reliable car

and crew so we were quietly confident heading into the twoday meet,” he said.

“There were 20 competitors all of whom race weekly at top tracks with large car numbers, so it was a tough field.”

Erik said that the lap record came as a great surprise and noted that he and his team weren’t expecting to get into the 16 second bracket – and that will be the sort of performance he will be hoping to emulate when he races at the Victorian State Titles at Hamilton Speedway later this month.

“Hamilton will be tough as the best of the best drivers will be there competing and Titles al-

ways add a higher level of pressure,” he said.

“We just have to prepare well and we will just take every heat race as it comes and hope for good draws and an opportunity to make it to the final in a decent starting position.”

Erik also took time to thank those who have contributed significantly to his continued success.

A STRING of changes in the Mareeba Bulls line up for the match against Innisfail Cutters on Saturday night saw the type of football Coach Perry Krakowczyk knew his charges could play, and it showed.

A re-shuffling of the back line due to the suspension of Ben Stabile, the debut of Jack Centofanti, the club’s youth goal keeper and local gun John Ghensi saw a much improved performance from the home side.

“We kept a clean sheet, we concentrated for the full ninety minutes and took our chances when they came,” said Perry.

“We have done a lot of hard work at training and it’s paying off, Jack had his debut and did quite well. The boy’s are beginning to have that belief in the system we are playing and in their own ability.

“We have the players that can make an impact, the injury to Captain Jamie Carroll was the only sour note to come out of the match, but we will assess the situation for the match on Sunday against Stratford.

with a thumping 4-2 win over their Innisfail counterparts, while the youth side got bashed in their encounter going down 3-0 to the Cutters.

On Friday night The Bulls Fillies had a narrow loss to JCU Strikers going down 4-3 and the Men’s second division kept up their early season form to pick up a 5-2 win against JCU. This weekend the Bulls are at home again and host the Stratford Dolphins in all grades with matches to be played on Sunday April 14.

The Fillies and second division play away in the Tableland derby against the Atherton Eagles from 6.30pm.

Gladiators fall to Leprechauns in first home game of season THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side showed plenty of promise in a losing effort on Saturday night.

Their opponents were the ever-formidable Innisfail Leprechauns, and while the Gladiators ultimately went down 28-14, it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of heart.

The poor start which plagued the Gladiators the week prior in Atherton happened again on Saturday, as Innisfail jumped out to a 10-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, capitalising on the home side’s mistakes and illdiscipline.

Despite their poor start, the final 20 minutes of the first half belonged to the Gladiators, as their outside backs began to create opportunity after opportunity out wide.

Their expansive play paid off as Gladiators winger Josh AduDwanna scored in the corner to reduce the deficit to just a converted try.

The Gladiators were unlucky not to score again just before half-time after Adu-Dwanna was tackled just short of the try line after he made a 50 metre dash down the sideline beating multiple would-be defenders.

in the second half stifled the home side’s momentum they had carried from the end of the first half.

A try to Gladiators captain Trent Barnard kept them in it, however Innisfail almost immediately hit back with three quick tries to blow the lead out to 28-8.

Another try to Barnard late in the game brought the scoreline to 28-14.

Mareeba Gladiators A-Grade coach Terry Aquilina said the ef-

fort is there, however it’s the errors which are hurting his team.

“We’re making too many follow-on errors,” he said.

“So we’ll do something well and then we’ll follow it with an error, and that’s proven costly as it makes it really hard for us to apply and maintain pressure.

“In saying that, our players are willing - I can live with us making errors as long as they’re not avoiding what they have to do, so from that perspective there’s

something for us to work with.

“We have a lot of young players in our squad and this a learning curve for them, so patience is required.”

Saturday was a tough day for the Mareeba club, as the Gladiators went down in all four fixtures.

The Mareeba Gladiators will have the chance to avenge their losses this Saturday as they host Southern Suburbs.

Roosters strong start continues

Despite the A-Grade’s strong showing, it was a mixed night for the club as they recorded losses in the U18s and reserve grade fixtures.

They were dominant in the women’s match-up however, securing a convincing win to the tune of eight tries to one.
