WHILE it’s not in The Express team’s nature to boast when achieving some success, we were fortunate to receive three awards at the esteemed Queensland Country Press Association 2019 Newspaper Excellence Awards recently.

Held at the Royal on the Park Hotel in Brisbane, The Express

took out the top gong for Best Locally Produced Advertisement, the Best of the Best Advertisement and Best Run of Press Supplement.

The Best Locally Produced Advertisement and Best of the Best Advertisement awards were for “Cynthia, Don’t take the office out of our Electorate”, while

the Best Run of Press Supplement was for our “International Women’s Day“ feature.

The Express’ Advertising Manager Natasha Srhoj said it is an honour to have received three awards on the night.

“It’s pretty exciting for an independent, regional newspaper to be recognised in this fashion,”

she said.

“The Express has only been operating for ten years, so for a relatively young community newspaper to do so well on the state stage is a rewarding feeling.

“There was a great amount of passion that was put into both the advertisement and feature, and I feel that is what made them stand

out to the judges.

“They were strong, interesting and personal that incorporated plenty of colour.”

The Express Newspaper’s owner and Editor Carl Portella noted his excitement with the awards, and paid special homage to Ms Srhoj for her fantastic work in being the brains trust behind the design of the winning advertisement and feature.

“I must congratulate Natasha for the concepts of the advertisement and feature – they were succinct, to the point and had wonderful colour schemes,” he said.

“Advertising is changing nowadays, it’s about asking pointed questions to ensure there’s a response from the consumer and Natasha regularly achieves that.”

Mr Portella said the awards were of particular significance given The Express were able to beat out some extremely reputable peers.

“It’s terrific to be recognised by judges who have a huge amount of experience at awards nights such as the one we were successful at,” he said.

“They see advertisements from all over the country, so to go from receiving Highly Commended awards last year to now taking out some of the top advertising gongs is phenomenal.”

Mr Portella took time to thank those who have made a significant contribution to The Express newspaper.

“Firstly I would like to acknowledge the Secretary of the Queensland Country Press Association Greg Watson – he’s a gentlemen that’s been there for a great length of time and has an enormous amount of knowledge about newspapers around Queensland,” he said.

“He’s one of the go-to people in the industry.

“I also obviously want to thank our clients, our readers and the more than 14,000 followers on Facebook.”

Call My Doctor closing down IN-HOME after-hours doctor and telehealth service Call My Doctor will close down this week.

Call My Doctor has been operating on the Tablelands since March this year, and as recently as a fortnight ago the company announced via a press release their plans to launch 100% fully bulk-billed clinics in the Mareeba, Atherton and Cairns areas.

However, those plans have appeared to have come to a halt due to a pay dispute between Call My Doctor and the organisation who agreed to fund the service - North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Call My Doctor Managing Director Lindsay Stewart claims that NQPHN are refusing to pay what was agreed upon in their contracts.

“We are running a service that we won by tender, and they asked us to commence telehealth as soon as possible, which we did and they have not paid,” he said.

“We supply in home service

and they don’t pay.

“We were going to start four bulk-billing clinics in the region, which are now on hold.”

Mr Stewart said that if this matter was to go to court, it will be an easy process to prove deliberate mishandling of tax payers funds, and misleading conduct to gain advantage by non-payment of invoices.

“The Service in Mareeba and Atherton has been delivered,” he said.

“I now understand why, when Government puts out tenders in the region, companies will not go and supply services because they just don’t pay and hide behind their mistakes until companies get into financial trouble because of their nonpayment.

“It was a simple contract of topping up calls to 15 for both the in-home and telehealth service.

“If any calls were made which we could claim on Medicare, we would reduce our invoice ac-

Mr Stewart noted that the NQPHN will be the major debtor for the Tablelands losing such an important medical service in the region.

“He (NQPHN Chief Executive Officer John Gregg) is now claiming our services and invoices are unlawful,” he said.

“Could someone with authority take him off this and get

someone that is professional to sort the wasted 11 weeks of him waiting for us fall over.

“I am Australian, I don’t give up, especially to people that use their position to hide and mis-

lead.

“In any other business he would have been stood aside by now, however I just want the invoices paid. Services provided, payment needed.”

Mareeba Community Hub

Full steam ahead with new Hub

PLANNING is well underway for the development of Mareeba’s new Community Hub. Council received funding from the Queensland Government last month, allowing the Community Hub on Anzac Avenue to proceed.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the wheels are in motion and works will begin as soon as possible.

“As a Council, we are delighted to see this project coming to fruition,” he said.

The Hub will be developed into a multi-use facility, where people of all ages and abilities can gather and access a range of services and activities including sport and recreation, library services, training, community functions and events.

Cr Gilmore said there has been a positive response from Library users.

“The community has been deprived of an adequate Library service for many years and

Council has identified that this is the only viable and most affordable option for the community,” he said.

“To purchase an existing building is not eligible under the grant funds available and building a new Library would cost an estimated $4m. This is not affordable for ratepayers given a 1% rate rise is only $150,000 in extra revenue.”

in a central position, many members of our library have been unable to utilise the facility in its entirety due to inadequate space and lack of all abilities access.

“A representative group of customers with mobility issues said they would be able to get to the new library so long as it was within the township, but didn’t need to be in the CBD,” he said.

“Customers have been telling us for some time now that they want safer parking and improved customer safety getting to the library from their car and given that the majority of users drive, this is a significant issue.

“Everyone can see that as the town grows, the main street will only become busier,” he said.

Cr Gilmore said the new Community Hub eliminates

many of these problems.

“Council will take extra steps to assist those few customers who may have difficulties accessing the new Library. This may include offering a home delivery service, encouraging a buddy system and possible community transport options,” he said.

“We are aware that most school children who visit the library after school come with their parents. A small number walk or get dropped off in town by the school bus to go to the library and are then later picked up by their parents. We will be talking with the bus providers to see if they can include the Hub as a drop-off point.

“We anticipate that the Community Hub and library will at-

tract new customers and groups who are not presently using the Library premises due to the lack of space and its busy location.

The new site will serve the community well for many decades to come as it will allow for future expansion as the population grows.”

Councillor Gilmore said this project would not be possible without the support of the Queensland Government.

“I have to say, we are so indebted to the Queensland Government for this funding. It has made this all possible,” he said.

“The Hub will be grant funded, so we have to say thank you very much – it’s an extraordinary commitment and an extraordinary investment in our community.”

To gain a greater understanding of the proposed Community Hub and its perceived impact on Mareeba, The Express created and displayed a poll on Facebook to help determine the residents’ sentiments towards the multi-million dollar development.

THE poll was live for just shy of two weeks, and asked participants to answer a three part yes/ no questionnaire as it pertains to the Community Hub along with the relocation of the library.

The poll closed on Friday and garnered more than 100 respondents, with certain questions providing a more decisive opinion, while others were more divided.

The first question on the poll asked respondents “Does the Mareeba Library need an urgent modernisation and upgrade?”.

There was an overwhelming “yes” response, with 90.2% in favour of an upgrade compared to that of just 9.8%.

The following question regarding the library received a much more even-handed result, as they voted on “Should the Mareeba Shire Council relocate the Mareeba Library from Byrnes Street to Anzac Avenue to accomplish this”.

43.1% of participants voted yes while 56.9% voted to not have the library move from Ma-

reeba’s main street.

The third and final question of the poll was more general in nature, as it asked “In your opinion, does Mareeba NEED a Community Hub?” The polls indicate a desire for a community hub in Mareeba as 72.5% believe the town needs one, while 27.5% disagreed.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the results of the poll were of no surprise to the Mareeba Shire Council.

“Council has recognised the need to modernise and upgrade the current Library. While it would be nice to keep the Library in the CBD, the move to Anzac Avenue is the only viable option the community can afford,” he said.

“While there have been a few very vocal people opposed to relocating the library, the majority of library users are very much in support of the idea. The Mareeba community has been deprived of a suitable library for a long time and we as a Council are very pleased to see this development

proceed.”

Council only had two options; to leave the Library where it is, in its current state which we all know is too small, outdated and simply inadequate, or take the opportunity presented to us to develop this Hub which includes a modern, spacious library which will long cater for our growing community.

“The community cannot afford to upgrade the current Library or build a new one,” he said.

“The move to Anzac Avenue is the only way the community will be able to have an adequate library which will have improved access, parking availability and safety for our customers.”

While the proposed Community Hub is sure to remain an intensely debated issue for quite some time, it is not possible to ascertain whether the development will prove beneficial or detrimental to the fabric of the community until it is operational.

THE annual Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine and sausage sizzle is on this Sunday, June 16, at Arnold Park, Mareeba.

Organisers are calling on the community to get together for some fun in the sun, all in aid of Childhood Cancer Research.

The event will be raising money for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. The Lions has shown commendable commitment in the fight of childhood cancer with over $5 million donated to the country’s leading scientific and clinical childhood cancer

research organisations.

The Metrogaine allows residents to see how many points they can locate on a map of Mareeba in a three hour period, entrants can travel by foot or use bikes.

Registration opens at 8am for an 8.30am start and the Lions Club are hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better than last year.

There are great prizes to be won and cost is $10 per person or $20 for a team (maximum four per team).

Atherton Friends hit the ground running LOCALS supporting locals is the aim of the newly formed Atherton Friends of the Foundation group.

The fundraising group is a subsidiary of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation and brings together the longestablished Hospital Auxiliary with other members of the community.

Friends president Dianne Williams said she was delighted the community had united to support health services.

“Any monetary donations to

us now are tax deductible and we are planning some additional fundraising activities to help boost equipment for our health service,” Ms Williams said.

Atherton Hospital Auxiliary spokeswoman Louise De Marzi said in the 30 years the auxiliary had run, it had contributed more than $500,000 to improving equipment at the local hospital.

“That’s been through our weekly bingo, fetes, cake stalls and our daily trolley through the hospital,” Mrs De Marzi said.

“We believe joining with the

Friends group is a step in the right direction for the hospital and our community,” she said.

Atherton Club of Rotary kicked off the new Friends group, with a $20,000 donation.

Director Jo Barnes said the funds were raised through Rotary’s work on the field days and Tastes of the Tablelands events.

Foundation chairman Dr Ken Chapman said he was delighted the community had recognised the benefits of coming under the Foundation’s umbrella.

“We now have Friends groups

here, Mareeba, Mossman, Cow Bay, Innisfail, Croydon, Cooktown and we’ve also welcomed Tully and Herberton to the fold recently as well,” Dr Chapman said.

“This is a wonderful step forward for the Atherton community and we look forward to supporting them achieve better health outcomes for local patients,” he said.

COMMUNITY HUB Is the Community Hub going ahead? Yes. Planning is well

underway for the establishment of a multi-purpose Community Hub following funding approval from the Queensland Government and the contracts have been signed.

What will the Hub include? A new Bowls Club, modern

Library and function space for training, community events and celebrations.

Why the Bowls Club? The Bowls Club has given the land and

building to Council. In exchange, Council will build a new smaller clubhouse and bowling green and give the Club a long-term lease.

The existing building will be refurbished to accommodate a new Library and the existing function area will remain as a community space for training, events and celebrations. Council will own the land and buildings and the Mareeba Bowls Club will have a long-term lease arrangement for the use of the new clubhouse and green. The site on Anzac Avenue has better parking and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities, which has been identified by users as a major problem with the current Library.

The new clubhouse and green are being built using grant funds, which are not available to buy an existing building.

Why can’t Council expand the current Library? The

current building is not suitable to be expanded and realistically would have to be demolished and rebuilt, which has been costed at approximately $4 million. This wouldn’t solve the parking issues as Byrnes Street will continue to get busier as the population grows and the community cannot afford the $4 million.

What happens if the Hub was not developed? The cramped, inadequate Library would remain where it is. There is no other viable option that the community can afford.

Why can’t Council build a new Library? A new stand-alone

Library has been costed at approximately $4 million to build. This is not affordable for ratepayers; given that a 1% increase in rates only raises $150,000 in extra revenue.

Why not use the RSL or another building in the CBD? The

Mareeba RSL building is on the market for $2.2 million and is likely to require a further $1.5 million in renovations, which is beyond the community’s capacity to pay. There are no grants available to purchase an existing building. The former Shire Hall is also unsuitable. This building is too small, and is heritage listed which would restrict renovations and extensions needed. Furthermore, there is a long-term lease arrangement in place with Mareeba PCYC for its childcare and youth services.

Will Council provide additional services for those who cannot access the Library by vehicle? While the vast majority of users visit

the library by car, or are dropped off by car, Council is looking into additional services to assist the small group of customers who may have trouble accessing the Library. These may include offering a home delivery service, encouraging a buddy system and possible community transport options. Council will be talking with the bus providers to see if they can include the Hub as a drop-off point after school.

“The State Government is placing restrictions on Far Northern Milling and the conditions of the contract are simply unacceptable.”

Far Northern Milling’s Secrerary Bronwyn Dwyer was short and succinct when speaking on the current progress of negotiations.

“Funding that the Federal Government has promised suits the purpose that we require of it,” she said.

“On the other hand, the State Government has turned this into a political football.”

“A deal is a deal and a promise is a promise - when we make a promise, we deliver it,” he said.

“The Queensland Government will not be changing the deal we entered into with growers and nor should Mr Entsch.

“Mr Entsch and the LNP need to deliver on their promise today.”

Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch rubbished the claims made my Mr Dick, stating that his press release was a “bastard act”.

“Cameron Dick has no idea what he’s talking about – he took my comments I made earlier in the year on face value, twisted them and didn’t even bother to speak with the proponents of the Mossman Mill before sending that release,” he said.

“I’m disappointed that this has been pushed as two politicians having a fight, all I’m concerned about is getting this over

CONCERNS are ramping up over the future of the Mossman Mill with questions being raised as to whether the State and Federal Government’s commitment of 25 and 20 million dollars respectively will be secured before the pending investment decision on June 14.

In a media release just under a fortnight ago, Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure, and Planning Cameron Dick challenged Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch by stating that critical funding for day to day operational funding for the Mossman Mill, including wages, is now in jeopardy.

“Everyone understood the State’s support was focused on the delivery of the bio-precinct, with the Federal funding designed to support ongoing operations to allow the transition to occur,” Mr Dick said.

“This approach is consistent with our relevant constitutional roles and was fully supported by Far Northern Milling.”

THE Tablelands Regional Council celebrated local business excellence on Saturday June 1, with the 2019 winners of the Tablelands Business Excellence awards being announced.

Each category featured prizes to be won and a ‘People’s Choice’ option for locals to vote for different businesses in that respective category.

A stand out winner was local business Ready Vet who received the Customer Champion award for their consistent and high quality service to their customers.

Customer champion was just one of five categories that were available for entry.

The Regional Innovator award was won by HTM Complete and Best Dressed Business went to Petals and Pinecones Coffee and Creativity.

The Employer of Choice award and prize went to Ignite Financial NQ and Sustainability Contribution was awarded to Tablelands Community Link.

Ready Vet has been operating on the Tablelands since 2013, prior to this Principal Veterinarian Dr Matthew Robinson worked at the local Mareeba Central Vet. Ready Vets’ contribution to the community hasn’t gone unnoticed; in 2016 they were awarded the number one Animal Hospital in the Cairns Region.

In 2017 they were the Peo-

ple’s Choice for the Sustainability contribution for the TRC Business Awards.

Ready Vet Co-Owner and General Manager Catherine Robinson was proud to have received the Customer Champion Award.

“As a whole team we are really proud,” she said.

“We were finalists in last year’s TRC Business awards for Customer Champion.

“We are constantly trying to improve and refine our service to suit and please our customers.”

Ready Vet was nominated in all five available categories in this year’s Business Awards including finalist positions in Regional Innovator, Employer of Choice and Customer Champion.

Mrs Robinson contributed the success of Ready Vet to “hard work”.

Springmount Road upgrade complete

SPRINGMOUNT Road upgrade project is now complete. Construction commenced in late August 2018 on the widening upgrade and sealing of Springmount Road between Middle Creek Road and Oaky Valley Avenue. Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the work was first class. “The works undertaken on this stretch of road have made a significant improvement to the safety and accessibility to

the road network,” he said.

“Springmount Road is an important transport corridor for agriculture, freight and livestock; to name a few, so this upgrade will be welcomed I am sure by many road users.”

The project was funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS), and Mareeba Shire Council.

Grower nominated for national award Dimbulah farmer Chris Maisel who recently won the Tractor Pull competition at the Rotary FNQ Field Days has been nominated for the 2019 National Corteva Young Grower of the Year Award.

DIMBULAH paw paw, lime and papaya farmer Chris Maisel of Maisel Ag Pty Ltd has been nominated for the 2019 National Corteva Young Grower of the Year Award.

The award recognises fruit and vegetable growers under the age of 35 who have exemplified a strong commitment to innovation along with a dedication to their community and the agricultural industry as a whole.

The Corteva Young Grower of the Year Award will be presented at the 2019 National Awards of Excellence during Hort Connections in Melbourne later this month.

Mr Maisel noted his surprise at receiving a nomination.

“I was humbled, to think that someone believes what I’m doing is worthy of a nomination means a lot to me,” he said.

“The nomination was completely out of the blue, this past year was my first year involved in horticulture – before this I lived my whole life on the family cane farms in Arriga.”

Mr Maisel said he believes he had been shortlisted due to his multi-faceted approach to horticulture.

“I bring to the industry my background in cropping and education (BAgribusiness and BAppSc-Agronomy),” he said.

“Together these have taught me to challenge current methods, implement changes and have the desire to support the industry as a whole through direct participation in improvement programs.

“My goal is to use my experience and education to drive productivity, encompassing best management practices and integrated pest management.

“I try to bring a modern approach to old problems, doing so by working in collaboration with the industry papaya breeding program for future proofing the industry.”

Mr Maisel took time to thank those who have played an integral role in his short yet successful horticultural career thus far.

“I would like to thank Bindi, Grahame and Tim of GT AG Ser-

vices, Tolga, for their on-going support and services,” he said.

“Of course, I also want to thank my family for their encouragement, support and guidance.”

While Mr Maisel’s nomination is an exceptional achievement on an individual level, he wanted to focus on promoting horticulture as an attractive future for young people.

“It’s about getting more young people studying and into career paths, not just as growers, but the whole supply chain of horticulture,” he said.

“There is a strong future in horticulture that needs young people to help solve challenges such as labour, water security and better varieties etc.

“It’s about showing that young growers can add value and make a difference to their industry by bringing innovative and fresh ideas and wide-ranging skill sets.”

Wind Farm community fund open for grant applications COMMUNITY organisations can now submit applications for the next round of grants from the Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.

More than $100,000 remains up for grabs after nine local groups were awarded grants earlier this year.

The deadline for applications is 31 July. Once applications close a panel of local volunteers will review all submissions and make recommendations for projects and initiatives to be supported by the fund.

Paul McDonald, RATCHAustralia’s site manager for Mount Emerald Wind Farm, said: “We were extremely impressed by the number and the quality of applications received earlier this year.

“I am excited to see the innovative ways that the community is looking to utilise the fund. We have received so many great applications, and I would encourage those who were unlucky in the first round to reapply.”

Application forms and guidance for applicants, as well as

information about the wind farm and how it was built, are available at www.mtemeraldwindfarm.com.au Projects or initiatives located within a 50km radius of the wind farm are eligible for funding. The Fund’s catchment also extends around the Windy Hill Wind Farm at Ravenshoe, which is also owned and operated by RATCH-Australia.

TGT donates to deserving locals

The year 5-6 class at St Anthony’s school in Dimbulah receiving their donation from TGT last week.

TGT DIMBULAH has shown the community it believes in local commerce by donating $3000 to four different community organisations across the Dimbulah area.

Mutchilba State School, Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club, Dimbulah Childcare Centre and St Anthony’s’ have all received generous donations of $750 courtesy of TGT Dimbulah.

TGT Dimbulah manager Allan Sutton was thrilled to able to give back to the local community.

“We’re a community organisation,” he said. “The people who support us we support them, it’s a two-way stream.

“I’d like to thank the TGT board for having the insight to support multiple organisations instead of putting all our eggs in

one basket.”

TGT’s donations will be helping out many people in the community, none more so that the year 5-6 class of St Anthony’s.

Teacher Rachelle De Lacovo has expressed her gratitude towards TGT and their selfless assistance.

“We’re headed off to Canberra in October,” she said.

“We are trying to give the kids an experience that they wouldn’t normally have.

“The kids have been learning all about politics through the curriculum so this trip will help in their studies but it’s also a bit of fun.”

The year 5-6 class hasn’t sat idly by waiting for donations; they have participated in their own fundraising.

“So far we have had a car

wash, an Easter raffle, the students catered a tea and coffee stall for the wheelbarrow race,” she said.

“We are currently proceeding with a pie drive and we have a Father’s Day Raffle coming up.”

St Anthony’s wasn’t the only local school to receive a donation. Mutchilba State School also received a donation that will be going towards their new agriculture program.

Mutchilba State School Principal Luke Morris thanked TGT for its support and stated that the money will be going straight back to buy supplies and other products for their program.

All four organisations that received donations expressed their gratitude to TGT Dimbulah for their help and support.

Calling all garden lovers

THE Mareeba Rodeo Association is proud to present the 53rd Mareeba District Garden Awards.

The annual garden awards are an opportunity for those who take pride in their gardens to be judged by professionals from the gardening industry.

This year social media gives Facebook users an opportunity to have their say in the Facebook People’s Choice where they vote on the best garden, best senior’s garden and best vege garden.

There is no charge for entering and cash and voucher prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each of the 12 categories.

A trophy is up for grabs for the garden deemed the ‘Champion Garden’ which will be selected by the judges.

Secretary Lee-Anne Brown is looking forward to this year’s competition.

“All of the preliminary work has been completed,” she said.

“All we need now is for people to take the step and show how proud they are of their wonderful gardens.

“The Mareeba District Rodeo Association, Mareeba Garden Centre and Councillor Angela Toppin are all prepared to accept nominations and answer any questions.”

All entrants are welcome to attend the presentation ceremony with afternoon tea supplied.

Nominations are now open and will close June 28, with the presentations held on Monday July 8.

Mrs Brown is confident on the quality of this year’s entrants.

“Every year we strive to im-

prove on the previous years,” she said.

“This year we made a couple of minor adjustments to the categories which will enable more gardeners to enter.”

When commenting on gardener involvement Mrs Brown said that “you have already done all of the hard work.

“Show the people of Mareeba Shire how proud you are of your garden,” she said. “It’s free to enter so you have nothing to lose.”

Teachers close the distance

Mareeba State High School hosted a special morning tea last week. The morning tea, hosted at the Mareeba State High School library, included students studying extracurricular subjects along with their distance education teachers.

The students are currently enrolled through Cairns School

of Distance Education, studying subjects like Dance, Visual Art, Italian, Geography, Ancient History and a Certificate III in Business.

The 14 students currently enrolled in the Distance Education program were treated to a serving of sandwiches, scones and other food.

The students then used this time to get some quality one on one time with their teachers face to face.

This is only the second year in which the teachers got to meet and assist their students in person.

Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Stefanie Prizmic said the students are required to be inde-

pendent and self-motivated.

“Students achieve success in these subjects if they communicate well with their teachers,” she said.

“They learn through phone and email with their teachers.

“In the long term students will become more self-driven to complete activities.”

Hopgood hoping to keep unbeaten Golden record

Carroll confident ahead of Golden Gloves

BRYDE’S Boxing Gym continues to make its mark on North Queensland’s amateur boxing landscape, and it is apparent the Mareeba gym has its fair share of young talent coming through the ranks who we should be watching out for.

Matthew Carroll (pictured) is one such boxer who is establishing a successful young amateur career, as he looks to secure his second Golden Gloves title in Townsville next weekend.

Matthew, 14, was victorious in last year’s Golden Gloves tournament and he hopes to repeat that feat in 2019.

Matthew’s Golden Gloves trophy is just one of a number of accomplishments that the 14-year-old has achieved in the squared circle, as he also has an Australian title to his name.

Matthew noted his excitement about having the opportunity to once again test himself against the best in the state for his weight and age.

“The preparation for this year’s tournament has been excellent,” he said.

“I’ve been training really hard and I’m feeling fresh and fit – and hopefully I can take it out again this year.”

Matthew said his intense preparation is a result of the level of competition he expects to face next weekend.

“It was a very strong standard last year and I came up against some really talented boxers,” he said.

“So I can’t take any of my opponents lightly because they’re all quality.”

Matthew started boxing roughly four years ago, and he alluded to the enormous role it has played in his young life ever since.

“Boxing challenges you so much and makes you disciplined and focused,” he said.

“And that’s not only in boxing; it helps a lot in other parts of your life too.

“That’s why I have to thank my coach Wayne Bryde so much; he brought me through the ranks as a skinny primary school kid and turned me into an Australian champion.

“Everyone here at Bryde’s Boxing Gym have such a passion for the sport, and that’s why I love training here.”

The Golden Gloves tournament will take place on June 22 and 23 in Townsville.

14-YEAR-OLD Mareeba local Bayden Hopgood (pictured) will have to prepare for a baptism of fire in the ring as he will be competing in just his second competitive amateur bout at next weekend’s Golden Gloves tournament in Townsville.

Bayden made his debut a little over a fortnight ago in Gordonvale, where he secured a split decision victory to improve to 1-0 as an amateur.

Bayden said his first fight was a great learning experience for him.

“I thought I did really well for my first fight,” he said.

“I was pretty nervous before the fight but once I got into the ring I was able to zone all of that out and focus on the job at hand.”

Bayden doesn’t appear too fazed about his upcoming bouts in the novice category at the Golden Gloves event in Towns-

ville, as he appears confident that he has prepared adequately to perform at his best.

“I’m just training hard for it and I’ll just see how it goes,” he said.

“I just love the opportunity to box and it’s a sport that allows me to travel and meet new people.”

Bayden said he would like to thank his coaches and Bryde’s Boxing Gym teammate Matthew Carroll for their huge support.

“I Obviously want to say thank you to the coaches and Wayne in particular for helping my boxing so much,” he said.

“I also want to thank Matthew (Carroll), he has helped me out with sparring quite a bit and I learn so much off him.

“He has a fair bit more experience than me and really knows a lot, so his help has been awesome.”

DEFENDING premiers the Mossman Sharks have delivered the Atherton Roosters their second straight loss after taking the points 26-24 at a cold and wet Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium

on Saturday night.

The opening exchanges were evenly matched before Mossman came up with the first try at the 32nd minute mark. Another soon after gave the visitors a 12-0 lead

at the break.

Mossman’s restart was good and they soon had another four pointer to push their lead out to 18-0. A length of the field try scoring effort saw Mossman go

further ahead 22-0. Minutes later Mossman again went end to end to give them a fifth try and a lead of 26-0 at the 60th minute. But to their credit the Roosters surged back into the contest with four unanswered tries.

The recovery started with a double to captain Jermaine Pedro which closed the gap to 2612. Nathan Curcio crossed for another five minutes later and the Roosters now trailed 26-18 with six minutes remaining. Matt Baillie got over the line for the Roosters fourth try just before the final siren sounded and time had run out for the homeside.

In reserve grade, the Roosters continued their winning form with a 26-16 victory over Mossman. Half Sam Harreman crossed a treble while Tony Woodleigh and Matt Curcio were the other try scorers.

Atherton’s ladies touch league side also had a 4-0 win over Mossman which highlighted a try scoring double from speedster Sharee Andrews.

Cairns District Rugby League premiership action continues for the Atherton Roosters this Sunday against Ivanhoes at Smithfield.

Bulls lose in a game of missed chances

IT was another tough day at the office on Saturday night for the Mareeba Bulls as they battled against table toppers Edge Hill United (EHU).

They started strongly and caught EHU out on a number of occasions, but the final touch in front of goal went missing.

After going one behind to some sloppy defence from a set piece mid-way through the first half both Damien Wildman and Darcy McCormack had the opportunity to even the scores.

The second half proved the same as the first with missed opportunities and a lack of composure in front which could have seen the bulls take something from the match.

Their fate was sealed with a second half strike from EHU to give a final 2-0 score line.

The men’s reserves battled in the top of the table clash and came out 4-0 winners.

On Friday night the men’s second division enjoyed a 3-2 win away with 16 year old Danial Rossi scoring the winner.

The Fillies also came home with a win after Madina Williamson and Chelsey Manitta both bagging a brace to come out comfortable 4-2 winners.

The Bulls play away to the Innisfail Cutters this Saturday with games kicking off from 11am.

Ladies cricket leaps into action THE local ladies cricket competition began last weekend as the Lacy Bra Cup kicked off.

The Lacy Bra Cup is a competition that allows women to play cricket in a fun and relaxed environment.

The cup has two seasons which are played every year over summer and winter.

The current season is the winter competition which will run through to July 7. This season currently consists of four teams who play every Sunday.

Lacy Bra Cup organiser Trisha Spry said it’s not too late to get on board this season.

“We can always make room for more players,” she said.

“The format allows everyone

to have a go at every part of the game.

“The aim of this comp is to encourage ladies and girls to come and try a sport they’ve never tried or didn’t want to play in a men’s’ team.”

MAREEBA Gladiators will be looking to follow on from their 18-16 win over Tully Tigers a fortnight ago as they host Roos at home this weekend.
