ONE of Mareeba’s most adored community members Roy Tyler was laid to rest last Tuesday after passing away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 18 at the age of 80.

Roy’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from those within the Tablelands community who had the pleasure of knowing him personally.

Roy was known for his extensive commitment to the betterment of the region and his personable nature, and his legacy will be one which lasts for many years beyond his passing.

Roy’s son John Tyler said his

father was a charismatic figure in the community.

“Dad loved interacting with people,” he said.

“I think that’s why he continued working in his security job a year up until his passing, it helped keep him going while he was struggling with his illness.”

Roy’s professional career was a diverse one, having owned a horse riding business Pine Vale Ranch on the Tablelands, of which he ran throughout most of his children’s schooling years.

Roy then changed industries in the early 2000’s to own and operate Mareeba Security Services.

Prior to Roy’s time as a businessman in Mareeba, Roy served in the British Army – and it was a very important part of his life according to John.

“He was quite a regimental bloke, which I think he got from serving in the army,” he laughed.

“He could be a strict dad at times, but that was what made me and my siblings who we are today.

“Dad taught us respect, particularly for older people, which is something I feel is being a lost a bit in this day and age.”

Roy’s military background meant that he was a regular at the

Mareeba RSL, and John noted his father’s disappointment about its closure.

“Dad was a life member of the RSL, he loved going down there to catch up with his mates and he was quite upset to see it shut down,” he said.

Roy’s greatest passion however was his love for music, and his contribution to the Tablelands music scene was significant, so much so he received a life membership from the Walkamin Country Music Club in 2018.

John said music also acted as a fantastic way for his father to keep himself entertained while

battling his debilitating blood disorder.

“He was often singing, whether it was at the hospital or at music festivals around the region,” he said.

“He never did it for the money, it was something he loved to do and it brought great joy to his life.”

John said he wanted to thank those who came together to celebrate his father’s life at last week’s funeral.

“It was great to see so many people at the funeral and it shows just how much of an impact he had on this community,” he said.

TRC name new Division 3 Councillor

THE Tablelands Regional Council has officially named their new Division 3 Councillor who will be representing Malanda.

Members of council held a secret ballot at last week’s council meeting to determine who would take over the role which has been vacant since former councillor Anthony Ball’s shock resignation in December.

There were 13 candidates who put their name forward for the role, with the two candidates who secured the most votes on the ballot progressing to a sec-

ond round of voting – of which were Dave Bilney and Bernard Wilce.

The second round of voting resulted in a tie, which therefore meant the ballot would be decided by a random draw, with Dave Bilney ultimately being declared the new Division 3 Councillor.

Mr Bilney is a Malanda local who has been a small business owner on the Atherton Tablelands for nearly two decades, and he noted his motivation in nominating for the position.

“You can talk about changing things from the sidelines as much as you want; however if

you’re not willing to put your hand up and enforce some of that change yourself, it’s all for nothing,” he said.

“I will be out-and-about in the community as early as I can to identify some of the residents’ concerns, and from there I will work tirelessly to find the necessary resolutions.”

Mr Bilney said pushing for improvements in the agricultural sector and the stimulation of the local economy will be two of his biggest points of emphasis as councillor.

“Being a small business owner myself and having a father-

in-law who was a dairy farmer, ensuring those industries flourish are certainly vested interests of mine,” he said.

“Added to that, I’m also very passionate about ensuring local trades and services are utilised.

“I am too often seeing tradesman from Cairns working here on the Tablelands when it can be done by locals, which is some-

thing that needs rectifying.”

Mr Bilney said he looks forward to working with his fellow councillors for the betterment of the communities they represent.

“Each councillor brings their own set of talents and I can’t wait to play my part in helping shape the region’s future,” he said.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said he is

looking forward to welcoming Dave to the Tablelands Regional Council team and helping him transition into local government.

“After he settles in, we’ll bring him up to speed on our organisation, legislative requirements and key projects,” he said.

“It’s going to be a busy few first few months for Dave but he’s a part of a great team.”

TRC’s quarterly budget review shows improvements AN item of emphasis on the Tablelands Regional Council’s agenda at last week’s council meeting was the 2018/19 second quarter budget review.

The report painted a positive picture for TRC, as they recorded an improvement to the tune

of $357,647 when compared to the figures reported at the end of the first quarter.

Tablelands Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons said the most significant budget variation in the second quarter was in relation

to a reduction in their overall salaries and wages expenditure budget.

“The main reason for that reduction was that at the beginning of January we had finalised our certified agreement with staff and unions,” he said.

“The result of the certified agreement was lower than what we had budgeted for and because it came into effect in January, there was no back pay.

“So due to the timing adjustments associated with the agreement, that resulted in a

Local photographers – amateur or professional – are encouraged to get behind the lens and submit their favourite rural or agricultural image for the cover of the guide, which will be jam-packed with key information, maps, articles and profiles.

Rotary FNQ Field Days committee chair Ida Portella said the photo should capture the true meaning and feeling of the largest field days in northern Australia.

“Whether it’s the people, the environment, the landscapes, the weather, the industries or daily life, there are boundless opportunities for inspiration,” Ms Portella said.

The competition comes as sites for the three-day agricultural extravaganza – May 29, 30 and 31 at Kerribee Park, Mareeba – are all but sold out.

Ms Portella said she was thrilled with the level of support for the event, with regulars and new exhibitors jumping on board to be part of it.

“This year, we have expanded into to two new areas, under part of the grandstand and to the right of the entrance gates,” Ms Portella said.

“Our exhibitors deliver quality – in products, services and support - and often timely specials and deals to suit the local farmer, grower or support business.

“We are designing an innovative and interactive attractions program to complement the exhibition area and the traditional attractions, like the tractor pull which are always popular with visitors.

Rough roads, town water restrictions and the loss of a television transmission tower were the main topics of often heated discussions at a public meeting held in Chillagoe on Thursday night.

Addressing more than 40 residents, Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said he had been urging the Transport and Main Roads department to seal the unmade sections of the Bourke Development Road between Almaden and Chillagoe.

He said the department had assured him bitumen sealing work would begin mid-2019 and the delay had been caused by on-site investigations which uncovered geotechnical issues requiring a review of the design and additional earthworks.

“The TMR also said the works had been delayed by a lack of water for road construction due to the extremely dry conditions during last year,” Mr Katter said.

“There have been a number of serious accidents on the unsealed sections and the work

should start as soon as possible.”

Town water restrictions had been in force for several years according to resident David Chant.

“There is a mining accommodation village on the edge of town which uses a lot of water so more reliable supplies must be found,” Mr Chant said.

KAP senate candidate Joy Marriott was at the meeting and addressed questions about the length of time it took high school children to get to school.

“It is too hard on children having to endure a two and one half hour trip for students over a rough road being driven by parents or grandparents to meet the school bus in Almaden for the bus trip to Dimbulah or Mareeba. Then they have to repeat the same trip coming home,” Ms Marriott said.

“There is no need for students up to grade nine to do this long trip when primary school teachers are qualified to teach to grade nine level.

“The education department should be making adjustments to the school so these older children can be taught locally.

“The children who are in grade 10 and above could find private board in Mareeba, but some parents would be unable to afford the fees.

“Families should not have to relocate so their kids can get a decent education.

“To keep families in regional areas there should be better subsidies which support families who send their kids away to school.”

Mr Katter said he would investigate why the television tower, which ratepayers said they owned, was removed by the council, preventing some of the town’s older residents from watching ABC TV and listening to ABC radio.

“This tower should be replaced and I will have my office make inquiries with the federal Minister,” Mr Katter said after the meeting.

Outrage over Australia Post decision

APPROXIMATELY 70 outraged residents gathered at the Mount Molloy CWA Hall for a community meeting to discuss the removal of Australia Post services from the Mount Molloy Post Office building on 14 Main Street.

The meeting was held after Australia Post abruptly revoked the licence of the current lessee on Friday, February 22.

The town’s postal services were relocated to the National Hotel in the form of a community postal agency the very same day.

The Mount Molloy Post Office building has stood for 112 years, and the landlord Tracy Gulliver noted her immense disappointment with the decision.

“I was not notified of Australia Post’s decision to move the postal services elsewhere,” she said.

“I have personally reached out to them and they have failed to respond.”

Ms Gulliver said her father Lorne, who is now 83, has been in Mount Molloy for more than 36 years and continues to maintain the site’s facilities and gardens.

“He is the one who redeveloped the site to make it look as it does today, and the news of the town’s postal services being relocated has devastated him,” she said.

“It is an iconic building which attracts tourists driving past, so we need to ensure it is kept operational.

“I am more than happy to work with Australia Post and the new lessee whoever that may be to ensure that the Mount Molloy Post Office on 14 Main Street is re-established and reopened.”

The chair of the community meeting was Julatten resident Gordon Rasmussen, who described the potential shifting of the postal services in Mount Molloy as disgraceful and farcical.

"With the exception of a few, there was nil correspondence with the broader community prior to the post office being shut down,” he said.

“Australia Post has been far from helpful – they have not made any endeavour to contact the landlord Tracy Gulliver.

“It is also absolutely false that Tracy doesn’t want the post office to remain at 14 Main Street, and she has since put those rumours to bed.”

Mr Rasmussen said the community strongly feels that there is a conflict of interest as many have reason to believe that the individuals who run the community postal agency may have plans to relocate the town’s postal services to a new site.

“From the meeting today there is obviously distrust within the community, and the resi-

dents have made that clear with a unanimous vote for their desire for an independent postal worker to staff the post office whilst an open tender is called and a new licence is granted,” he said.

Mr Rasmussen said Australia Post’s decision is a slap in the face and shows a complete disregard for the good citizens of Mount Molloy, Mount Carbine, Julatten and the surrounding areas that this post office services.

The residents’ grievances were bolstered with key political figures in the region attending the meeting.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter were present at the CWA Hall, both of whom noted their full

support moving forward.

At the meeting, Mr Rasmussen asked the community members in attendance to vote on whether they would like him to implement a three-part resolution, of which are as follows: Resolution 1. That the Post Office with full services be reopened within this working week at 14 Main Street, Mount Molloy.

Resolution 2. That the current operators of the community postal agency do not staff the post office on its reopening and insist a fully trained postal worker with the security clearances required staff the post office and call for and open a tender process for a new licensee.

AS the quadrennial election nears, the Tablelands Regional Council was required under the Local Government Act 2009 to review whether each of its divisions has a reasonable proportion of electors (RPE).

The RPE is the total number of electors divided by the number of divisions, with the latest figures obtained from the Electoral Commission of Queensland (as at January, 31 2019).

The results identified that the number of electors is 17,200, and as TRC has six divisions, the RPE is 2866.667.

The number of electors in each division may vary by 10% above or below the RPE under the Act, thus meaning the upper limit is 3,153 electors while the lower limit is 2,580, with each division required to fall within this range.

The findings showed that all

but one division met the RPE requirements, with Division 2 having 2,514 electors, which is below the lower limit threshold.

Added to the RPE report, TRC conducted a public consultation to determine possible alternate electoral arrangements.

The consultation was undertaken on TRC’s community engagement website, Shaping Our Tablelands.

There were three options that were offered to the community for feedback.

Option 1 was to keep the existing six divisions with a minor amendment to the Division 2 boundary, whilst Option 2 was to reduce the number of divisions and have multiple councillors represent each division.

Option 3 was for those in favour of abolishing divisions.

Option 1 received 60.58 per cent of the vote, whilst Option 2

and 3 received 5.88 per cent and 33.52 per cent of votes respectively.

There were 170 residents who voted in the survey, making up only 0.98 per cent of the local government area’s electors.

Tablelands Regional Council’s Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons wanted to reiterate that any changes made to the electoral boundaries or divisional structure is not determined by council.

“After both the RPE and public consultation results were tabled to council, we have made recommendations to the Minister, of which are to refer each set of findings to the Electoral Commissioner,” he said.

“It is then up to the Electoral Commissioner on what needs to be done in relation to our electoral boundaries and divisional model.”

Residents raise concerns over development OBJECTORS of the proposed Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Service development had the opportunity to voice their concerns at last week’s Tablelands Regional Council meeting.

Five residents were each given five minutes to allude to the issues associated with the development, before its approval or disapproval was voted on

by TRC councillors later in the meeting.

The multi-million dollar project will include a medical centre with additional amenities such as a function facility, shop, office and food and drink outlet as stated in the proposal’s official documents.

Atherton resident Michelle Saunders said those who object to the development don’t disapprove of the health service; however they do disapprove of the supplementary facilities.

“We have continually stated that we are not opposed to the medical centre,” she said.

“However when you look at the development in its totality, it doesn’t check the boxes from a feasibility standpoint.

“It is in the wrong place

and should be undertaken elsewhere.”

One issue which garnered a strong negative response from the residents was the provision of alcohol.

“Common sense would say that a medical service and the supplying of alcohol don’t go hand in hand,” Ms Saunders said.

“Council have stated that there will not be a bottle shop however the application states the contrary.

“There are a number of problems that can arise if you mix people seeking medical assistance and the accessibility to alcohol.”

Tablelands Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons refuted the objectors’ claims that there will be a bottle shop as part of the development.

“Black and white, a bottle shop is not able to go into that facility because it does not meet the conditions that have been imposed on the development approval,” he said.

“The provision of alcohol must be ancillary to the facility, which a liquor outlet is not.”

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said the alcohol licencing for the

facility may be granted for the function centre and potentially for training programs relating to hospitality services, however he wanted to reiterate that the decision to grant such licenses is not TRC’s, it is the State Government’s.

Another pertinent issue tabled by an objector at the council meeting was the impact the development could have on the Peaks Gully Catchment.

Council concluded that the Mulungu project would have a “non-worsening” effect on the catchment, a conclusion objector Sidney Dikes strongly disagrees with.

“The stormwater drainage problems with Peaks Gully Catchment have been a multidecade issue,” Mr Dikes said.

“There have been a number of engineers and hydrologists who have noted the significant improvements that need to be made to address the frequency with which the town is flooded.

“When council say that there can be no increase in water into the system, all you’ve got to do is put one building in an absorbent area and you’ll immediately have a water increase.

Residents had the opportunity to convey their concerns over the Mulungu development at last week’s council meeting as they were given five minutes to put forward an argument as to why the project shouldn’t go ahead.

“That is the threat which this development poses and I don’t see how council can say it will have a non-worsening effect.”

Mr Commons said it is very clear within the report that there is to be no worsening of the current stormwater issues that is experienced in the area.

“In terms of the development application from Mulungu, it has been conditioned that their development cannot cause further deterioration to the existing water issues that are there,” he said.

“There was a request from councillors that they be provided with a report outlining what the status is in relation to the Peaks Gully Catchment and its associated drainage issues.

“That report will be coming back to council in either March or April, and it will specifically look at the underlying issues that exist and what needs to be done to address it” Mr Commons said to reach a complete resolution to the stormwater drainage issues will be a significantly large project.

“Another aspect of the report will identify how council can stage works incrementally over a number of years to address the stormwater problems,” he said.

Although the problems some residents had with the development itself were of great significance, it was also the public consultation process that had many objectors displeased.

“They did not follow the process in relation to the public consultation calendar,” resident Rachel Grandcourt said.

“We were given from December 7 to January 4, however December 20-January 4 are not business operating days.

“So instead of having a full month, they only operated the public consultation over 9 days, which did not give the people the proper ability to make an objection.”

Ms Grandcourt said what concerns her is that the entire process has been colluded.

“There has been no transparency, and it has seemed that council had a pre-empted out-

come in mind – so this process was in bias of one party over another,” she said.

“We were largely excluded from the process – there has been no liaising with the community.

“So council’s statement that this is a community project has proven to be anything but.

“Ultimately this development will be catatonic and change where we live forever, so we should have had more of a say.”

TRC CEO Justin Commons said although council’s public consultation process wasn’t quite what they envisioned; they are firmly of the view that council has heard clearly what a number of concerns are from the community.

“We’re comfortable we have gotten a clear understanding of the community’s concerns, and we believe the report appropriately addresses many of those that were raised,” he said.

At the council meeting, the Mulungu development was approved via a casting vote from TRC Mayor Joe Paronella.

AN environmental concern was raised at the last Mareeba Shire Council meeting about the presence of the Turbina weed at Rifle Creek.

The Turbina weed is an invasive plant species that is capable of causing significant and widespread vegetation damage.

A native of tropical America, it is a scrambling vine that can grow more than ten metres high.

The vine can totally blanket vegetation and is a serious threat to rainforest margins by displacing native vines and shrub.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown said it’s imperative that the Turbina weed is correctly monitored.

“We see the impact it has had on along the Barron River and it’s important we don’t see some of those issues occurring at Rifle Creek,” he said.

“With Rifle Creek being a part of the Mitchell River catchment, it opens the door to a real environmental problem if we don’t get ahead of it.”

Cr Brown said it’s another invasive weed the region just doesn’t need.

“We have other problematic species such as the Singapore Daisy and the Navua Sedge in the Julatten and Kuranda area, so if the Turbina were to get out of hand too, it would be concerning,” he said.

Making a difference to girls around the world

AS Friday marks International Women’s Day, it provides us with the opportunity to recognise those women who play an integral role in our community.

One such collection of women who deserve celebrating is Day For Girls Mareeba, a volunteer group who meet on the first Saturday of every month to create washable feminine hygiene kits for girls and women around the world.

Days For Girls Mareeba is a chapter of Days For Girls International, which is a global movement that was created in 2008 after humanitarian Celeste Mergens identified a problem on a trip to Kenya.

Days For Girls has grown to where it now operates in 120 states in 17 countries, and is sup-

ported by over 1,000 chapters and teams who construct and assemble the kits.

The Days For Girls Mareeba chapter has been operating since 2013, and it is an initiative that continues to go from strength to strength on the Tablelands.

“The support from the community since we started more than five years ago has been amazing,” Days For Girls Team Leader Lesa Pershouse said.

“We have provided girls and women in developing parts of the world with more than 1,000 kits and much-needed access to menstrual health education, and that is something we are extremely proud of.”

Ms Pershouse said ensuring girls and women have access to sanitary products and the appro-

priate education is paramount.

“We find that a lot of girls aren’t going to school and women aren’t going to work in developing countries when they are experiencing their period,” she said.

“So not only does having access to reusable menstrual kits make an enormous social impact, it also provides a number of economic benefits.”

While a large portion of their work has been done overseas, of which includes supplying kits to girls and women in East Timor, Nepal and Papua New Guinea, fellow Days For Girls Mareeba Team Leader Tracy Cockrell said their chapter also has plans to further assist developing areas in Australia.

Well Man Tour hits the Tablelands Danae Jones, Drew Brauer, Jodie Ferrero, Grant Westthorpe, Mark McConville and Ingrid Steed at the Atherton International Club delivering their Well Man Tour event last Thursday.

DOZENS of Tablelands residents converged on the Atherton International Club for the Well Man Tour event last Thursday night.

The event was an entertainment and information session to promote health and wellbeing among men.

Developed and coordinated

by Cairns not-for-profit organisation Health Reimagined, the Well Man Tour travelled across North

Queensland to provide steps for men on how to lead healthier lives.

Atherton was the last stop on the tour, with information sessions having already been held previously in Mackay, Port Douglas and Cairns.

Three speakers presented as part of the event, all of whom spoke in-depth about their personal experiences and how it

motivated them to help men of all ages across Australia in their fight for greater physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

Chief Executive Officer of the Men’s Resource Centre Grant Westthorpe said he was extremely happy with the numbers at the event.

“It was great to see so many men wanting to make subtle changes to better their life,” he

said.

“All we’re looking for is to give men what we refer to as a 10% nudge – if they can make a 10% nudge to a better wellbeing, they’ll be amazed at what a difference that will have on their life.”

Another purpose of Mr Westthorpe’s visit was to promote the Well Man App, which is aimed at improving the life of boys and

men.

The app provides men with access to health and wellbeing information along with physical, mental, social and food challenges to be completed by the user.

“This app is going to spread rapidly,” he said.

“It is such a worthwhile app as it can be downloaded and used in your own time.

“Most importantly however,

the abundance of information the app provides is what makes it stand out.

“It will provide people who are struggling with avenues to find a way out of their dark place - and it is great tool for men to broaden their knowledge on their overall wellbeing.”

Mr Westthorpe encouraged men of all ages to downland the app, and noted that downloading it identifies an individual’s strength, not weakness.

The second speaker of the night was comedian and qualified suicidologist Mark McConville.

Mr McConville performed a comedic routine for the crowd which incorporated some important messages about the enormous role laughter plays in one’s mental health.

“When I delved into the statistics on suicide and attempted suicide in this country, I quickly realised that it was an epidemic,” he said.

“It motivated me to look into what human laughter can do to combat mental illness, and it showed to have enormous benefits.

“So being a comedian myself, I realised that I work in an industry that could have a positive impact and I wanted to make a difference.”

Mr McConville said he has designed a human laughter education program for people suffering from stress, anxiety and depression, of which can be found on his website at www.markmcconville.com.au.

The final speaker of the evening was Drew Brauer, who founded the not-for-profit charity Kick On which is based in Cairns.

The charity focuses on suicide prevention and mental health through programs across the state which incorporate fitness, music and social groups.

Mr Brauer encouraged members of the public to like the Kick On Facebook and Instagram pages to show their support.

A “glimmer of hope” for rural Queensland communities that have been bludgeoned by floods and years of drought could be delivered by the passing of the KAP’s Liquor (Rural Hotels Concession) Amendment Bill 2018, State KAP Leader and Traeger MP Robbie Katter has said.

Responding to an article published in the Courier Mail on the weekend, Mr Katter said he was relieved on behalf of the bush to learn that the State Government would pass the legislation.

The KAP bill will reduce annual licence fees for “very remote” pubs so they are no longer paying the same as their innercity counterparts – bringing the yearly fee of $3,757 down to $376.

Mr Katter said he supported the news that the Government would extend the legislation to clubs.

In total 112 pubs and 42 clubs will benefit from the change under Labor’s amendments.

Mr Katter sought leave from Parliament this week to remain in his electorate to support producers and communities in the midst of one of Australia’s worst

ever flooding disasters.

Producers in the North West are predicting stock losses of up to half a million, which could equate to around $500 million in lost income and costs incurred overall.

The Traeger MP said while his focus was on the ongoing crisis, the Government’s support of the KAP bill was welcome.

“The passing of this legislation is, in the scheme of things, a minute policy change for the State Government,” he said.

“But the actual effect it will have on the ground in my electorate and all remote electorates across Queensland is significant.

“In the bush, the pub is not just a business – it’s a community meeting place and a central point of contact for those who face isolation on a day to day basis.

“On Monday when I was in Julia Creek, many of those producers shattered by what’s gone on during the past week met at the Gannon’s Hotel to sit together, unload their thoughts and just offer some support to one another.

“Many people talk about the importance of looking after men-

tal health in the bush – one of the simplest ways to do this is to make sure people can come together a have a drink or a talk at their local.

“This can’t happen if pubs can’t afford to stay open.”

Mr Katter said rising operating costs in the face of unavoidably low patronage due to the isolation faced in remote areas had threatened the viability of bush pubs in recent years, with many having already been forced to close their doors.

“Time and time again I have been told the annual licencing fee was one of many overheads that publicans just found impossible to pay,” he said.

“For many, these changes will come too late but for those pubs we still have I trust this will be very welcome.”

Mr Katter thanked the Palaszczuk Government in advance for supporting the bill.  Recipients of the KAP’s Liquor (Rural Hotels Concession) Amendment Bill 2018 will be announced this week.

Gifted Students excel at National Level LIFE CHANGING: The students and staff members who attended Session C of NYSF in 2019.

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), or as the alumni fondly remember, ‘nerd camp’, is a twelve day residential program purposed to expose senior year students to the many careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

This year, 588 students from across Australia, with a minority being international students, were selected from 1300 applications. These students were allocated to one of three sessions occurring beginning, middle and end of January.

Deborah attended the last session, Session C, of the NYSF this year through the financial support of Mareeba Rotary, the selection process conducted by Rotary District 9550, and the encouragement of St Stephen’s Catholic College and her family and friends.

This year, Session C was held at the Australian National University (ANU), giving students of the NYSF the opportunity to

visit Canberra’s many STEM facilities. These STEM visits were tailored to the interests of students, and as my interest was engineering, and she was able to explore and conduct sample experiments related to the ongoing research in places such as the Deep Space Communication Centre and the ANU Research School of Engineering and Physics.

Participants also attended several lectures delivered by renowned Australian scientists, and listened to Dr. Alan Finkel AO, the Chief Scientist of Australia, outline his academic journey to his current position. Each of the NYSF’s major partners, among which included several universities, then presented students with a better insight into the STEM opportunities they offered post-graduation.

Between visits and lectures, participants engaged in many social events, which facilitated much networking between the cohort, visiting alumni, and several Australian scientists. This fostered a strong sense of com-

munity, and made farewells all the more difficult.

As one of three students selected to attend the NYSF from Rotary District 9550, the prestige of this opportunity was overwhelming. All who attended had completed the same (if not more) rigorous selection process that I had, so from the first day, it was obvious that I was surrounded by Australia’s future scientists.

In an atmosphere so welcoming, it was hard to not settle in quickly. Every day was packed with activities, leaving myself with an abundance of STEM knowledge to process each evening and Deborah was constantly encouraged to leave her comfort zone, and when given time to reflect on the program’s last day, she came to realise the amount of personal growth she had achieved over a mere twelve days. Not only did every participant feel more equipped for their senior year, but the NYSF had initiated excitement within them for their journey ahead.

In a stereotypical school setting, there is much stigma sur-

rounding terms such as ‘nerd camp’ and ‘STEM’. When attending programs such as the NYSF, this stigma is debunked.

With a network of over 10,000 alumni from the last 36 years that the NYSF has been running, attending this program has given Deborah the opportunity to form important connections within the Australian STEM community.

Through these connections, she have discovered several career pathways she had not known existed. Between the 189 students, 23 staff members, and twelve days of my session, Deborah is incredibly grateful for all who made this experience possible.

For those in Year 11 with even the slightest interest in STEM, Deborah would highly recommend applying for the NYSF, because there is nothing to lose from extending yourself.  Deborah Hermanus is a year 12 student at St Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba and also a College Captain.

Mentor camp helping to shape our young men THE Far North Queensland Mentor Group is calling on young men aged 13-17, their fathers and male mentors to take part in the region’s first Journey to Manhood camp.

The four-day rites of passage camp will be held in May at a location just outside of Mareeba, and is aimed at assisting young men in becoming caring, confident and happy individuals.

One of those helping organise the event is Mareeba local Michael Alba, who noted the wonderful effect camps such as the Journey to Manhood can have on a developing young man.

“This camp is about a journey of self-discovery and self-healing,” he said.

“I’ve personally seen this initiative work so well in other parts of Australia, and I can’t wait to see the impact it has on this community.”

Mr Alba said one of the biggest positives about the camp is its ability to find ways to deal with the issues at-risk youths may be experiencing.

“There’s so many better ways to get through to young men other than medication and diagnosing them with an illness,” he said.

“If they are in the right environment with strong role models around them, more often than not they will succeed, and that’s something we want to achieve out of this camp.

“We want to build on those father-son and/or male mentor relationships which will in turn be for the betterment of their life moving forward.”

For those interested in attending, the Journey to Manhood camp is from May 3-6 and is $250 per person (camping and food included).

In October 2017, Tash knew things had to change, she was unhappy with overall health and after a very difficult doctor’s appointment she decided that she had to do something. This lit a fire inside her and after a few appointments with a local dietitian she went on to follow a ketogenic lifestyle. After plenty of research it just made sense and as the kilo’s started falling off she knew this was the key to finding her health and happiness.

It wasn’t until people started noticing and asking what she was doing on a daily basis and after a lot of suggestions to start documenting what she was doing, A Girl Called Tash was born.

This was a way of keeping herself accountable but also to inspire others around her.

“I love having a place to share all of my thoughts, triumphs and even failures, it is therapeutic to sit down and put pen to paper.”

“This is what is working for me and helping me regain my health and if I inspire someone to change an aspect of their life along the way that fills me with happiness.”

Since she started following a ketogenic lifestyle she has not only lost over 23kgs but also got herself off all medication and her levels are all in a healthy range.

HARRIET DAVID

Harriet David a Kaanju woman born in Cairns, family descending from Yam Island and Coen. After working with Mulungu Family Services facilitating the Crosscore Movement, Harriet recently made the move with her children to Mareeba and now works as a Mulungu Deadly Choices Program Officer in the community promoting and delivering health education.

A graduate from the Indigenous Marathon Project where Harriet first gained her fitness qualifications, the IMP was designed in collaboration with Robert de Castella to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities to improve physical and SEWB and as Harriet says, “Building Strong Bodies and Stronger Minds”. Previously to running marathons and independently supporting her family, Harriet found herself putting foot to the pavement as a means to breaking out of her declining mental health state lead from issues of domestic violence and homelessness.

By using sport and physical activity to empower those around her, this experience has driven Harriet to encourage her children, family and friends to keep active and in check not only physically, but also mentally. When Harriet is not busy juggling her duties as a single mum and running marathons, she likes to volunteer her spare time coaching and mentoring the Mareeba Deadly Runners and Walkers.

JENNY PARSONS

Jenny Parsons in a Kamilaroi/Gomeroi women from Tamworth NSW and has lived in Far North Queensland for 4 ½ years and joined Mulungu as the Family Services Manager in April 2016. Having 3 adult children and 3 grandson Jenny loves when she can get to spend time with her family and she enjoys living on a property just outside Mareeba with room for her 3 horses and Denver her loved rescue puppy.

Jenny has completed a Cert 1V and Diploma in Community Services and is now realising a lifelong desire to complete University studies. Supported by Mulungu, Jenny recently completed a the ASTI Community Controlled Child Protection Principles unit through Griffith University as one of the first ever intake for this course.

Jenny has spent the majority of her working years working in youth programs, community services and employment services and spent 6 1/2 years working in NT and remote communities before coming to Mareeba.

Unknown to most people, Jenny was previously involved in the country music scene in Tamworth for many years and loves to sing. Singing has been an important part of her life from a very young age and in her high school years was part of a successful group, even managing to make a recording. Mareeba has become Jenny’s home and she enjoys participating in community through her work and enjoys the collaboration within the sector.

KIM GRAINER

Kim Grainer (nee Chong) is a born and bred Muluridji women of Mareeba, she went to the local primary and high schools. First job at the age of 16 working as teacher’s assistant at the local Kindergarten in Stewart St, later in life worked at the Mareeba Aboriginal Outreach program working with Aboriginal children in the areas of playgroup, pre-school program, after school enrichment program and vacation care programs.

Working with children lead her to choosing a career in health so her and her family moved interstate to Northern Territory so Kim could study in Aboriginal Health at Batchelor College and Alice Springs Campus. Completing Certificate and Diploma courses with her Nursing Studies currently on hold. Kim worked in Mareeba at the Mareeba Community Health Indigenous Unit, and also Katherine NT and a few remote clinics of Pine Creek, Batchelor, Jabiru, and Oenpelli, working alongside nurses and doctors providing primary health care to all the community.

Kim has also worked in Broome WA in the Closing the Gap Chronic Disease program as Care coordinator with BOAB health service. She has been an Aboriginal Health Worker/Practitioner for 20 years. She has now come back to work in her home community and is now the Team leader of the Wellbeing program at Mulungu Aboriginal Corporaton Primary Health Care Service. Kim continues to strive for better health and wellbeing for all families and community.

TANYA KING

Tanya King, mother of 4, born in Cairns, lived and raised in Mareeba. 1999: Worked as ATAS tutor and Teacher’s Aide at MSPS, for about 3 years. 2004: Worked as a Family Support Worker for approximately 5 years. 2009: An opportunity came up to do a Certificate 3 in Primary Health Care, completed her course also completed 6 week placement with Mulungu then went on to work 5 and half years as a Health Worker at Mareeba Hospital Community Health Indigenous Health Unit. Qualifications to date also include Certificate IV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Community Care and Practice).

2017: Tanya felt the desire, and decided she wanted to work with her people for her people, applied for and was successful with securing a Health Worker position at Mulungu. It was during this time Tanya began to see the effects of chronic conditions in her community. Tanya, herself having Diabetes, then began to take on a personal journey to a healthier lifestyle by changing her eating habits and becoming physically active. Achieving weight loss goals has led to Tanya having well controlled diabetes and reducing/delaying complications associated with Diabetes, which she hopes will inspire her community to see that it’s never too late to make changes for a healthier you.

One of her favorite quotes is “The health of those we love starts with us” (Jean Hales). Tanya believes with God all things are possible, in her role as a health worker she has a passion for putting patients first and one of her personal goals is to achieve better health care one patient at a time.

JENNY KITE

Jenny Kite is a proud Wiradjuri woman from Dubbo NSW and grew up in small country towns in outback QLD. Jenny has lived in in Mareeba for the last two years and joined Mulungu as the Children and Family Centre Co-Ordinator in September 2017.

Jenny also has completed diploma of Teaching, teaching in remote areas of Far North QLD and Northern Territory for the past 26 years. A number of these positions where as Principal of schools including Tennant Creek and Elliott.

Jenny has 4 adult children and 3 grand children who all live in Mareeba, Jenny likes to spend her free time with her family and getting out in the outdoors as much as possible.

Having worked with children and families for all of my working life, I am passionate about children’s early years learning and enjoy watching them grow.

MIRIAM FEJO Miriam Fejo is a local from Atherton and has spent most of her time working in remote areas of the Northern Territory & Queensland. Miriam worked in education for the past 10 years before joining Mulungu Health Service.

She enjoys her role as Senior Wannabe Engagement Officer engaging with Schools, Health services and other service providers to support Parents and Carers to grow strong, happy, healthy, educated families.

When not working Miriam enjoys, singing, reading, playing guitar and spending time with her BIG family. Miriam’s future aspirations include travelling to countries such as Indonesia, India & Africa to volunteer in schools and orphanages.

My opinion only. After many years Tableland Regional Council have finally cut the the grass on the enbankment on Pine Street North – job well done work force. Maybe the Prime Minister coming to Millaa Millaa.

Many more eye sore spots to be done and not all by TRC. Residents also should help in making this a tidy town.

The footpath on Pine Street section is blocked by vegetation forcing pedestrians to walk onto the road, it’s been like this for months. I complained to TRC and was told to speak to TRC (local Law Community and Envioromental Law) months ago.

I also explained to officer about over grown allotments which harboured vermins and snakes and waist high Singapore Daisy which has invaded our creek and elsewhere.

Officers answer we can act only on grass, not on Weeds, not on Singapore Daisy and Singapore Daisy is not a problem.

I was left speechless.

Neither were the cane toads or tilapia. I think this council should take complaints more serousily and not make their own original laws to suit, which in the long term causes big problems.

Bee demise There used to be a loud buzz in every gum tree as it flowered around my house but now the silence is much too obvious and this silence has come far too quick... it is frightening.

The whole of this year I have only seen one honey bee and now I see fewer and fewer native bees, in fact we now have to hand pollinate our pumpkins to get fruit.

What is happening, years two ago the place was literally buzzing with them all kinds of bees large and small... tiny black bees, blue banded bees, teddy bear bees, carpenter bees and more.

Insecticides sprayed on crops kills millions of bees but they used to recover quite quickly in the past but this time whatever is killing them has really done a job and it may become very serious indeed, a real ‘Silent Spring for us all.

The Chemical Companies don’t seem to be concerned

at the extermination of any insect, we are told by reliable sources that there is a 40% reduction of insects in the World and let’s face it, it is mainly down to Toxic Chemicals sprayed on to food crops I notice that the farmers now have to pay for hives to pollinate their Fruit Trees and other valuable crops to be successful, why do we persist in this old fashioned method of insect control that will eventually see the downfall of our civilization.

Expect NBN troubles At the start of February 2019, Telstra had a shopfront in the IGA complex Mareeba. They were selling their NBN Internet/telephone contracts. As I was already a “Wireless NBN” customer, dissatisfied with

my then, current provider, I signed up to Telstra NBN and brought my landline across.

Very quickly Telstra was to get a new modem to me. My contract was to start on February 11, 2019. On that date I set up the modem to start my new internet life with Telstra.

It did not work. I then spent about an hour trying to understand the poor English of the Telstra support line person, who came to the conclusion it was an NBN problem. He arranged for NBN to contact me. This NBN did on the same day. A tech was to attend my place the following day.

On February 12 I got a call from the tech, he would be 45 minutes. Then half an hour later I got a call saying my appointment was cancelled, no reason given. I rang NBN to find out why. It was useless bothering with them, they plead ignorance. I rang Telstra support and wrangled my way through the poor English again. This time the internet started. Did Telstra forget to start my NBN on February 11th? Internet works, phone works. Then on the 13th February the phone stopped working. Fault was reported, it is now the 18th and still no phone.

So be wary of the NBN Co, be wary of your internet provider and expect issues.

Honouring Roosters legend Graham Bevan THE Atherton Roosters held a memorial service at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium recently to honour the life of one of the club’s most respected former members, Graham Bevan.

Bevan passed away in Cairns on Monday, February 11 at age 73 after a long battle with cancer.

Bevan’s time as a Rooster was an impressive one, most notably of which included leading the storied Tableland club to back-to-back Eacham Rugby League premierships in 1974 and 1975, where he served as captain-coach.

Bevan’s pursuits on the rugby league field will forever be etched in the sport’s history in Far North Queensland, and one such person who had the pleasure of playing alongside him in their back-to-back premiership winning sides was Atherton local Peter Hodge.

“Graham was one of the best five-eighths and coaches the club has ever had,” he said.

“He was an extremely hard taskmaster, both as a teammate and a coach – and his ability to get the best out of his players was a big reason behind our success.

“Just to give you an idea of his coaching style, in the lead up to the grand final in 1974, he made us run 16 laps just as a warm up,” he laughed.

Hodge said Bevan was one of the toughest players he played with, noting his fearless approach every time he took the field.

“It didn’t matter if it was a winger or a front rower, Graham would always put his body on the line,” he said.

“Although he was short in stature, he was very strong.

“He was the first person I saw

incorporate weights into their training, so he was definitely before his time with regards to strength and conditioning.”

Hodge said Bevan’s hardnosed attitude towards rugby league was a far cry from his personality off the field.

“Graham was a great bloke,” he said.

“He was a very quiet person who often kept to himself; however he was fantastic to have around the club.

“He had an enormous passion for the game of rugby league and horse racing - they were his two greatest passions when I played with him in the 70s.”

The Atherton Roosters has established itself as one of the premier clubs in the region, and Graham Bevan’s short yet successful tenure played an integral role in helping shape the club.

Gladiators gear up for preseason fixture

THE Mareeba Gladiators will be looking to build team chemistry this weekend as they take on the Mossman Sharks in their first trial game of the year.

It will be a tough hit-out for the Gladiators as their opponents are coming off a stellar 2018 season, where they were crowned

CDRL premiers for the first time since 1998.

The game will act as an important prelude for the new-look Gladiators side’s first round match-up with the Atherton Roosters at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium at the end of the month.

For those interested in attending this weekend, the A-Grade fixture will take place at the Mossman Showgrounds at 6pm.

There will also be a women’s and reserve grade fixture prior which will kick off at 2:30pm and 4pm respectively.

Federal funding for horse and pony club THE Malanda Horse and Pony Club was one of three recipients of a Federal Government grant program in what was a very competitive field of applicants.

The Malanda Horse and Pony Club received $50,000 of the total $550,000 that was given as part of the grant.

KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said the funding is a ‘big win’ for the Malanda, Mount Isa and Edmonton regions.

“The standard of applications was remarkable and there were

many very worthwhile projects at play across the electorate," Mr Katter said.

“To enrich the talent and competitiveness of Queensland, country boys and girls are in a unique position to concentrate and compete in sports much more than their city counterparts whose opportunities for amusement are endless.

“That’s why these grants are so important to our regional towns and communities.”

Mr Katter encouraged clubs and organisations in the elector-

ate to apply for similar grant opportunities.

“Previous grants awarded to the electorate have assisted our Men’s Sheds, surf clubs, and rural fire station fit-outs, and are available for a range of other eligible projects such as community centre fit-outs, sporting facility upgrades, furniture and barbecues in our parks, purchasing equipment for local SES groups, or even schools projects that deliver benefits to the broader community,” he said.

Women ready to take to the field

Tough day on the pitch Atherton's first grade team travelled to MinnieconGregory oval to take on the Cricket Far North competition leaders Mulgrave in a 40-over match on Saturday.

Mulgrave won the toss and sent Atherton in to bat in overcast conditions with weather looking to play a big part.

In a stop-start match and missing a handful of regulars, Atherton battled to establish any partnerships.

Dan Parnell worked hard in a rain interrupted innings to top-score with 37 as the match was shortened after

each rain delay to 34 then 30 and finally 26 overs with Atherton stranded on 6-80.

Mulgrave's class was evident as they made short work of reaching the target for a comprehensive 9 wicket win.

Starting this Saturday, Atherton are at home for the final two matches of the season and look forward to the home crowd support to help them stay in the finals race.

THIS Saturday marks the first round of the Cairns District Rugby League’s inaugural Women’s NRL Touch competition.

One such club who will be looking to impress in their first outing is the Atherton Roosters, who will be buoyed by strong numbers at training.

“We have been training every Tuesday and Thursday so our preparation has been great,” Roosters player Danelle Cunningham said.

“In saying that, we haven’t played together as a team yet, so hopefully we’ll be able to take some of that chemistry we’ve built at training and implement it on game day.”

Cunningham said their first round match-up against Ivanhoes at home will act as a yard stick for how they’re travelling as a team.

“I think this first game will be a learning curve for our side, and we’ll show improvement as the

season progresses by identifying what we can do better week to week,” she said.

Cunnigham said she is glad to see women’s rugby league continue its rapid growth.

“Women’s rugby league has always been in the shadows somewhat, so it’s fantastic to see it being brought to the forefront,” she said.

“A lot of us have played touch before, but to be able to play under rugby league rules is some-

thing we are all really looking forward to.”

Cunningham said she would like to thank Graham Clark Sr who has helped out at training and provided invaluable rugby league advice to the playing group.

The Atherton Roosters women’s game this Saturday will take place at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium and will kick off at 4:40pm.
