‘All you need is love’ AFTER almost 60 years of marriage, Harry Grogan reckons all you need is love. The 82-year-old will celebrate the milestone with his wife Esther this week, even receiving a letter from Queen Elizabeth II congratulating the couple on their anniversary. “As soon as I saw that letter, my wife and I got a shock,” he said. “We just love each other, we’ve stayed together and I’m pleased we did. “Esther is everything to me, I just love her.” Raised in Kuranda, Mr Grogan ventured to Sydney in the early 1950s to continue his blossoming boxing career. It was there he met his wife-to-be, and the two married in 1956. “Esther was a big help to me and I was a big help to her,” she said. “I would not have lasted long without
her.” Mr Grogan would become the Australian welterweight champion in 1957 before eventually moving back to the Far North while working as an exhibition boxer on the show circuit. The couple would go on to raise three children while Mr Grogan worked a variety of jobs in the region, including as a stockman, timber cutter, railway worker and even helped build the Barron Gorge Hydro power station. Nowadays, the grandfather-of-three lives happily in Mareeba after retiring just a few years ago as a crane driver. “There’s only one thing you need one thing for a happy marriage –love for each other,” Mr Grogan said. Mr and Mrs Grogan’s milestone will be celebrated with family at a special party for the couple this Saturday.

TWO Far Northern IGA supermarkets have picked up wins at a major national awards ceremony. Held on the Gold Coast last month, the annual IGA Awards of Excellence singled out SUPA IGA Atherton and Cornett’s IGA Cooktown for their success. Atherton picked up Meat Department of the Year while Cooktown manager Paul Scott took out the Rising Star Award. SUPA IGA Atherton owner Michael Shakes and his team deliver “restaurant quality” steak to their customers as well as specialised gourmet lines and “Make Your Own” meal solutions. Their beef and pork is sourced locally from Morganberries Meatworks. Meanwhile, Mr Scott was praised for “setting the highest standards in all areas of running an IGA store”. Mr Scott’s leadership in Cooktown’s newly renovated store was highlighted, as well as his work with local charities and the community. The IGA Awards of Excellence recognise the dedicated efforts of the stores and their team in the local community, heralding the winning stores as the benchmark for other independent supermarkets across the IGA retail network.

Poll backs centre By Michael Serenc MAREEBA residents have given a hearty endorsement to a proposed $21 million shopping centre for the town, despite concerns being raised by a local businessman. 88 per cent of respondents to a Facebook poll run by The Express last week were in favour of the shopping centre, which hinges on Mareeba Shire Council approving the purchase of a small 1100m2 parcel of state-owned land reserved for aged housing it has trusteeship over. If successful, local developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd will have enough land to press ahead with a formal development application to council. But local businessman Ben Murat fears the shopping centre, to be located across from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, will have a negative

impact on existing businesses in the town’s CBD. “I have mixed feelings, I am not against the development but the timing of the project is not what Mareeba needs at the moment,” he said. “There are too many empty shops in the main street. We need to make the town more inviting to potential businesses and the townspeople.” Mr Murat said the existing “high level of vacancy” along Byrnes St was a more pressing issue for Mareeba. “There is…more than enough floor space and landlords should look at lowering their expectations of what their properties are worth from a rental perspective,” he said. “I believe some of the rentals being paid are astronomical and they will only get higher with this development.” Mareeba Chamber of Com-

merce president Joe Moro was not surprised by the poll results. “I imagine that the broader community generally supports the building of a shopping centre,” he said. “Over the past 20 years, this discussion has been going backwards and forwards and generally, there’s always been good support from the community.” Mr Moro said while only one local business owner had directly approached him with concerns about the development so far, other residents wanted more detail. “There has been some concern expressed about what the proposal actually entails with re-
gard to that land and how it will affect the railway, but not from the proprietors themselves,” he said. “There’s a strong desire from the community to have more information released about the proposal and how the process is going to be deliberated by council.” Interestingly, 75 per cent of respondents to the poll were women. “With how most families operate, I would imagine women do a lot more shopping than men but that may change over time,” Mr Moro said. “I think the poll reflects that they are the people going in and out of shops and a desire for more diversity within the local retail sector.”

Census on paper and net TABLELANDS residents who don’t have access to the internet will not be left out of this year’s Census. Despite a push by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for Australian residents to complete the Census online, the organisation is making a special exception for the region by either mailing out the questionnaire or having Census officers hand deliver it to local residents. Contained in the forms will also be a special 12-digit web login, if any resident chooses to complete it online. Census Queensland management unit assistant director Craig Brady said he appreciated there were a significant number of residents in rural areas who preferred to manually fill out the questionnaire. “We do recognise that in a lot of the country, paper will be people’s preferred method, or the most suitable method, depending upon their internet coverage,” he said. “It’s a once in five year chance where we really get to capture a snapshot of the nation and we really want to give everyone an opportunity to participate.” Residents can then return the Census

by a reply paid envelope included in the pack. In metropolitan areas, those wanting a paper questionnaire will have to call a “paper form request” phone line. Census officers would also follow up with any residents who fail to submit their questionnaire online or in the mail, and collect it from August 13. “Field officers will keep coming back up to five times in a day to give people plenty of opportunities for them to give the forms to us,” Mr Brady said. “But if they are able to pop it in the mail for us, then that’s a good way to get it back.” Mr Brady said it was the third time the Census had been available to complete online, with the ABS saving more than $100 million this year by encouraging Australians to go digital. “It can be a very expensive operation to conduct the Census, and the more people that participate online, the cheaper it is to run it,” he said. “That allows us to focus more on areas where online completion might not be the best approach.” The Census will be held next Tuesday.

Airport upgrade starts to take off THE first stage of Mareeba’s $18 million airport upgrade has begun. Mareeba Shire Council awarded three tenders for initial site works at last month’s council meeting, with the $176,622 widening and resurfacing of an internal sealed road for two-way traffic first cab off the rank. Cairns-based company Northern Civil Earthworks (NCE) was chosen for the upgrade, which will also include installation of road drainage, construction of asphalt-surfaced building accesses and additional car parking areas. In its tender submission to council, NCE claimed it could complete the roadworks within six weeks of being awarded the contract. A $986,727 upgrade of both Vicary and Ray roads will be carried out by LDI Constructions, another Cairns-based firm, with both roads bordering the airport. The works will involve widening and resurfacing Vicary Rd and the section of Ray Rd between Vicary Rd and JRM Braes Rd, including associated drainage works. “To cater for existing traffic and proposed development at the upgraded airport, it is necessary to upgrade these roads to a sealed formation width of 8.4 metres,” said Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore. In their report, council officers noted Vicary Rd and the section of Ray Rd slated for upgrades are cur-
rently “in fair to poor condition and range in width from 3.5 metres to 5.5 metres”. Work on both roads is expected to be completed within the next 10 weeks. Finally, Cairns-based FGF Developments will install a new potable water booster pump station at the airport, with the site’s existing water supply pipelines to form part of the new water network. The $746,251 upgrade is expected to be completed within the next 11 weeks. Runway and taxi upgrade works are set to start after next year’s wet season, with work expected to be finished by the end of that year. A council spokesman said an additional layer of asphalt will be added to the existing gravel runway in order to take Dash 8 turboprop aircraft “on a regular basis”, while also being able to take the much heavier Fokker 100 jetliners if required. “We have consulted extensively with the current users, potential users and other experts. Everyone is in agreement with the plans,” the spokesman said. “Suggestions have been made for additional works, mainly regarding the construction of a full length parallel taxiway. This can’t be delivered within the current budget but will be included in the long term development planning for the airport.” The North Queensland Aero Club and GBR Helicopters both run flight schools out of Mareeba.

Future unclear for restaurant MYSTERY surrounds the future of Crack-AJack bar and grill after the restaurant’s owners pulled the pin late last month. Crack-A-Jack held its last dinner on Saturday night, with co-owner Serg Battistin blaming excessive overhead costs and a lack of patronage for its closure. “There was not enough business to warrant continuing,” he said. “We tried our best to run it, but a business decision had to made as to whether we continued or not. “You can’t keep on flogging a dead horse.”

The Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club committee held a meeting last Saturday to determine the future of the venue, which is part of the club’s facilities. “It’s a bit of a let down, but maybe it was just ahead of its time,” Mr Battistin said. “There’s probably too many retail food outlets in Mareeba and…if you haven’t got some sort of gimmick to go with, it just doesn’t happen.” Mr Battistin said the restaurant employed only a few semi-permanent staff. “They’ve all been looked after and we’ve

Knuth slams seat plan DALRYMPLE MP Shane Knuth has accused the LNP of trying to wipe out his party. The LNP’s submission for re-drawing electorate boundaries in Queensland proposes to abolish the seat of Dalrymple and replace it with a new seat called Palmerston, cutting Gordonvale in half. “The LNP is so infatuated and obsessed in getting rid of Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) that they have completely overhauled several seats,” he said. “We’re gobsmacked.” Parliament voted to add four more parliamentary seats in April under the Electoral (Improving Representation) and Other Legislation
Amendment Bill , with the Electoral Commission Queensland’s (ECQ’s) Redistribution Commission now considering how those seats will be distributed. Mr Knuth’s fellow KAP MP, Robbie Katter, would also be hit under the LNP plan, which recommends pushing Charters Towers into the seat of Mt Isa and taking in Collinsville, Glenden and Moranbah – all known Labor strongholds. By contrast, Labor is not proposing to abolish any seats and will look at redistribution options in the South-East Corner. But Mr Knuth said he agreed with Labor’s plan to move Mareeba into Dalrymple, while
the seat of Cook could take up the northern fringes of Barron River. “That’s all the LNP needed to do, they would be minor adjustments and no seat would have to be abolished,” he said. “It’s quite clear the LNP leaders don’t want us there because we’re doing the job they’re supposed to be doing; we make them work harder.” Mr Knuth said the LNP’s seat redistribution plan would further strain relations with the KAP. The KAP has the chance to comment on submissions to the ECQ until August 29, with a final decision on seat redistributions to be made next April.

It is now the end of an era for myself and the Wadley Family, with my father and grandfather having owned and operated pharmacies across the Tablelands since 1945. I would like to personally thank the people of Mareeba and surrounding areas for your loyal and continued support over the years. Mareeba will always hold a special place in my heart. I am proud to have been involved with and supported so many community events and organisations in my time and I will cherish the friendships made. It has truly been a very humbling experience to be part of such a great community, which I am going to miss. To my staff, old and new, thank you for your dedication and commitment and all that you have done over the years – I will never forget. I now plan to take some time off to concentrate on Queensland Variety and enjoy my passion of campervanning.

Windfarm awaits tick of approval
Mt Emerald project manager Terry Johannesen said about 150 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the wind farm.
A TICK of approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) will unleash the Tablelands’ next major development this year. RATCH Australia gave a detailed presentation of the power company’s planned $360 million Emerald Wind Farm at a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week, as it waits on crucial FIRB approval for its proposed takeover of the project. RATCH struck an agreement with Far North developer Port Bajool in late June to buy the remaining 50 per cent stake in the company. The power provider is 80 per cent owned by major Thai power generation company, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL. Pending approval by the FIRB and financing, construction of the wind farm could start by the end of this year with a goal to be fully operational by September 2018. The controversial project, which has approval from both the Queensland and Australian governments, is currently in its “pre-construction” phase, with wind technology provider Vestas and construction firm Downer Group selected as primary contractors. Ergon Energy agreed in May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to
the end of 2030. Speaking at the luncheon, Mt Emerald project manager Terry Johannesen said about 150 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the wind farm, with 60 of those to be sourced within the Far North. Once built, the 180 MW wind farm will run 53 turbines, potentially generating enough electricity to power between 75,000 and 90,000 homes each year. 15 permanent staff will be employed once it is operational, with the wind turbines having a lifespan of about 25 years. RATCH Australia business development executive general manager Anthony Yeates said he expected FIRB approval shortly. Mr Yeates defended RATCH’s decision to not use majority local labour on the project, saying it required a diverse range of expertise during construction. “The construction phase of the project is really a whole series of short phases,” he said. “Depending on which phase of the project it is, the skills that are needed vary a lot.”
er percentage of local labour sourced to build the wind farm, the economic benefits for the Tablelands were undeniable. “We’d always like it to be higher…but 40 per cent local labour is better than nothing and our view is those jobs are going to be very important,” he said. “The other 60 per cent will be living within the area while they’re working on the project and other local businesses will be supplying them either directly and or indirectly.” Meanwhile, Port Bajool will now focus on developing the company’s planned Asia Pacific Energy Innovation Centre, which will be built on the wind farm’s 2400 ha site. Discussions have also begun to create world class mountain bike trails and walking tracks within the Mt Emerald site. Workers and suppliers interested in participating in the construction of the project can head to www.downergroup.com.au to register their interest.

Mr Yeates said he would expect the majority of the wind farm’s civil infrastructure to be built by local construction companies. RATCH will also establish a community consultative committee, aimed at providing updates on the wind farm during both its construction and operation, including environmental performance. Aiding that will be a community benefit fund, distributing up to about $200,000 every year to local community groups and organisations. Mr Yeates said the committee would not be a token gesture to appease opponents of the project. “We really look to slip in and be a part of the community where we operate,” he said. “We’ve got community committees operating for some of our other projects and they’re a very effective way of facilitating communication between us and the various representatives of the community.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said while he would have preferred a great-

Farewell to popular volunteer A TIRELESS volunteer at Ravenshoe Visitor Centre (RVC) has called it quits. David Nelson has stepped down as chairman of the centre’s management committee after first joining it in 1999. RVC spokeswoman Jane Rodwell said Mr Nelson would be fondly remembered by staff. “David steered us through accreditation, organized our first EFTPOS machine, represented us on many regional levels, at conferences and with council, always with a professional approach,” she said.
“One of the aspects of David we enjoyed was his relentless pursuit of excellence. His purchases for our sales counter were always of top quality and where ever possible locally produced and centered.” Ms Rodwell said Mr Nelson helped to set up RVC’s website and is still involved with the Ravenshoe Chamber of Commerce. He will stay on at the centre as web master. A new chairman will be announced this week.

Frank O’Neill has called it a day. After 44 years at Northern Auto Electrical in Mareeba, Frank retired last Friday and will now enjoy his retirement years with his wife and family. It all began back in 1972 when Mr Nick Van Wensveen, the owner of Northern Auto Electrical, employed Frank to work in the spare parts area, which then was in its first premises at Rankin Street (now Ads Injection). In later years, it moved to the premises next door, which is still run today by the Van Wensveen
family. Frank has seen a lot changes over the years and built up a good relationship with customers and suppliers. He has a wealth of knowledge in the spare parts areas of Seals, Bearings, Auto Electrical Components, Hydraulic fittings, Pulleys and General Transmission products, to name a few. Graham Van Wensveen and the team give their very best wishes to Frank for his past 44 years of service. He is going to be sorely missed.

Golden oldies in Xmas bash AUSTRALIA’S grey nomad population have revelled in a four-day extravaganza as part of Mareeba’s annual Christmas in July celebration. Almost 300 campervans from across the nation converged on Davies Park last week to participate in the event, which has been going for the past 19 years. Out of those, nearly 100 grey nomads were solo drivers. Christmas in July organiser Milford “Milly” Virtue said this year had been a success, with hundreds flocking to the park on Sunday for the event’s open day featuring market stalls, raffles, live entertainment and a hot rod display. “People come from all over Australia to attend this rally,” he said. “The weather’s great, we’ve got good hospitality and the leagues club I think is a good draw too.” Starting last Thursday, celebrations reached a cre-
scendo on Saturday night for the Christmas in July dinner at Mareeba Leagues Club. Grey nomads got into the festive spirit, with the best decorated hat competition proving popular once again. “It’s good get-together, a lot of people don’t see each other for 12 months, so they gather here and catch up,” he said. “Travelling in a campervan is a different lifestyle entirely. “You’ve got no bad neighbours, you just move!” Mr Virtue said Mareeba had once again welcomed grey nomads with open arms, praising the community and council’s support for the event. “It’s been fantastic, we get a lot of prizes donated from businesses around town for our raffles,” he said. All proceeds from the open day’s gold coin donation entry fee went to Mareeba SES and the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

The LAND Moro returns to water board BIBOOHRA farmer Joe Moro has been returned as chairman of the MareebaDimbulah water irrigation scheme board. Mr Moro, who is also president of the Mareeba Fruit and Vegetable District Growers Association, will spearhead a team comprised of local irrigators and independent directors for stage three of the State Government’s Local Management Arrangements Project after being involved in both stages one and two. “It’s something that’s taken a long time to come about. We conducted stage two of negotiations back in 2014,” Mr Moro said. “There’s a lot to be discussed with irrigators and we’re hoping to engage with them as the process begins.” The State Government has provided $8.9 million for the project, which runs across eight rural channel irrigation schemes in Queensland. “Local management is designed to use local knowledge and know how to reduce costs, increase productivity of the irrigation scheme, and add value to our agricultural sector,” Water Supply minister Mark Bailey said. “Locals from the Burdekin-Haughton,
CUT THROUGH: Environmental fees have been scrapped for small timber mills across Queensland, including one the Tablelands.
Mareeba and Lower Mary schemes are also carrying out further investigation and are preparing revised business proposals on how those schemes could operate under local management.” Mr Moro said he would support the Mareeba-Dimbulah scheme becoming locally managed, as opposed to being handled by a Brisbane-based water supply company. “I see a lot of advantages for irrigators in the long term, not only in keeping prices as low as possible but…the assets would be owned by irrigators rather than a Brisbane entity,” he said. Theodore, St George, Eton and Emerald irrigation schemes are currently in the process of transitioning to being locally managed. “There will be a further stage if the area decides to go down the road of local management,” Mr Moro said. “We’re still an interim board, so it depends on consultation with irrigators and the State Government where we go next.” A board of directors for Mareeba’s scheme will be appointed in the near future.
Fee relief for timber business A TABLELANDS timber business will avoid further crippling costs of environmental red tape after the State Government decided to scrap thousands of dollars in fees. Gadgarra Sawmill co-director Alan Hapgood said he was relieved to find out he would no longer have to pay more than $10,000 for a yearly Environmental Authority (EA) license and associated fees. “It’s amazing,” he said. “At the moment, we’re like most businesses in Queensland, we’re treading water trying to hold position.” Mr Hapgood said the small mill was able to have all fees wiped because they did not use the toxic chemicals chromium arsenic or creosote to treat timber, and treated less than 1500 cubic metres of timber a year. The move comes after heavy lobbying by Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth to State Environment minister Steven Miles. “This is a significant victory, and delivers a much-needed reprise for small timber mill opera-

Mossman processed 8,919 tonnes of cane before rain set in on Monday morning and harvesting ceased for the remainder of the week. Plant availability while crushing was above target and the outlook was promising for another week of good throughput. Maintenance was carried out for the remainder of the week after processing of juice stocks and a chemical clean of the evaporators with a focus on maintenance that required plant shutdown. Crush statistiCs: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 8,955 tonnes • CCS for week: 11.1 • Total cane crushed to date: 181,133 tonnes • CCS average to date: 10.6 • 2016 crop estimate: 850,000 tonnes

tors,” Mr Knuth said. “It’s a fight we’ve put up for almost two years.” Mr Hapgood said the mill had struggled for a decade due to the Global Financial Crisis and the impact of both cyclones Larry and Yasi on available wood supplies. Gadgarra’s EA license fees also rose astronomically around 2006, going from an annual fee of $858 to more than $8000. “This legislation, prior to the change, was crippling small mills and it was just unwarranted,” Mr Hapgood said. “We were in a situation where we couldn’t sell timber without it being treated, so what could we do? “We were suffering death by government.” Mr Hapgood said the fee relief would allow the timber treatment industry to continue on the Tablelands. “Demand isn’t strong at the moment, but hopefully when the economy kicks in again and starts booming we’ll still be able to survive,” he said.

sudoku Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.
Ingredients 1 cup olive oil 3 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 4-5 green onions, sliced thinly 250g feta cheese, crumbled 2-3 teaspoons Greek seasoning fresh baguette, sliced thinly (optional) balsamic vinegar
April 21 to May 21
Method 1. On a large platter drizzle olive oil until you have a thin layer on the entire platter. You may use more or less here depending on your preference. 2. Add the tomatoes, green onions, and feta on top of the olive oil. Sprinkle with the Greek seasoning to taste. 3. With a spoon carefully combine the ingredients. We found that we like a little drizzle of balsamic vinegar on top. If desired, drizzle a little balsamic on top. 4. Serve with warm sliced baguettes for scooping up the dip.

Community Service Club Updates Mareeba Lioness Club We are getting closer to our annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party which will be held on Saturday, August 13 at Mareeba Racecourse. Tickets are only $20 and are available at Rockmans in Byrnes Street. This includes afternoon tea, stalls, and some new and exciting entertainment. We would love to see as many as possible in pink and please wear a pink hat or apparel. Our aim is provide a truly community event and at the same time raise money for Cancer Research and we look forward to meeting all the wonderfully generous people of the Tablelands. We assisted the Lions Club with their stall at the Christmas in July cel-
ebrations at Davies Park on the weekend and it was well received and we thank all who supported us. There were hundreds of grey nomads and it was a great spectacle for our town. We look forward to seeing everyone back here next year and wish them well in their travels. If you are a pensioner, then you have an open invitation to attend our monthly Pensioners Morning Tea and Bingo on the second Tuesday of each month at the CWA Hall in Wilkes Street - next to Meals on Wheels. This is an ideal social event to have some fun with others and catch up with old friends. The morning tea starts at 9am there is free admission and everyone is welcome. If you require any information on Lionesses and our activities, or you wish to join our club, please do not hesitate to call Lioness Lyn Simpson on 4092 3953.
MAREEBA LIONS CLUB Lions around the world are united by a great spirit of giving and dedication to helping others. Mareeba Lions and Lioness have hit the ground running since changeover at the end of June. The Clubs have been involved with the Big Mareeba Rodeo, and the very popular Christmas in July. Once again the clubs turned out in force to provide an endless supply of banana fritters and chicken kebabs for the motor home fraternity. These two lines (plus fresh home grown fruit) have become a staple at the July celebrations. This year Mareeba was very ably supported by Lions Peter and Trisha Jackson, and Steve and Louise Filer who are members of the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club. The Lioness are holding the Annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party on Saturday August 13 and the com-
atherton meals on wheels – half yearly report ATHERTON and District Meals on Wheels would like to report that the organisation has provided 6,500 meals over the past six months, to those needing this important service in our district. The provision of this service requires long hours of organisation and preparation of meals by the coordinator, support staff and volunteer workers, Meals are prepared and delivered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with clients able to order a maximum of seven meals per week. A most important aspect of our service is the delivery of meals to clients in the different regions, as well as the Atherton township. The kitchen staff commence the preparation of food at 4.30am and this culminates with the delivery of meals at 10am. Currently we find ourselves in the difficult position of having to regularly also use the kitchen staff to so deliveries. How we would appreciate it if we
bined clubs are collaborating in hosting the MSF Sugar Limited Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine August 28. This event was unfortunately postponed due to wet weather back in June. The event promises to be most enjoyable for all who attend. All money raised will be donated to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, a truly worthwhile cause. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. could have the support of many more volunteers to help with deliveries. Volunteering only requires a few hours either weekly, fortnightly or monthly and other suitable times. It is rewarding to bring nutritious food and friendship to those in need. Our organisation continues to be kindly supported in many ways by service clubs, community organisations and individuals, for which we are very grateful. This year we conducted our first ever Art Union, with a major sponsor being Mobil Tolga Fuel Stop and also providing sponsorship was Atherton Gas and Camping. The Art Union was well received and we thank everyone who participated by purchasing tickets. Queensland Meals on Wheels has recently requested that we re-establish a Meals on Wheels service to the Herberton community. We will therefore be holding a public information day on Thursday, August 4 (tomorrow), at the CWA Hall in Herberton at 10am. All interested persons are invited to attend as feedback from this meeting will enable us to ascertain if this service can once again be established for the Herberton community.

Bulls build for future
THE Mareeba Bulls will press ahead with new lights at Borzi Park and a lawn mower after receiving a $35,000 grant from council. $27,000 of the grant is part of an interest free loan to help with the total costs of the lights and to help with the cost of buying the new mower. The total estimated cost of construction for the lights on field two is $45,000. It is hoped they can be erected in time for the last two rounds of the regular season to allow junior games to be played under lights at home. “The club is excited about the future, every year we always look to improve on the facilities we have, the lights have been a dream for a long time and this will now allow us to play more night games, bring junior games to Mareeba and play them in-conjunction with senior games at the same time,” said Mareeba Bulls tech-
nical director Alex Srhoj. “We can also increase the number of fields available for the off-season, six-a-side comp. It opens up more opportunities for the club.” It is the first time in 15 years that the club will be able to purchase a new lawnmower. “The club maintains the entire complex 100 per cent with volunteers, we mow the entire complex, so it’s a big job,” Srhoj said. “The club is thankful of the council’s support and being able to offer the loan upfront so we can get things moving now.” Construction of the new lights is expected to start within the next two weeks, with the first junior games to be played on August 20.

EXPRESS sPORT Jockey celebration day to kick off racing season Roosters Jacob Rivett grabbed another three tries to give the speedster eight in three matches.
Roosters crow with 64 point win Photo by Peter Roy.
The racing season will kick off in Mareeba this Saturday with the annual ‘Jockey Celebration’ Race Day. Racegoers are invited to join in as Mareeba Turf Club celebrates the achievements of former and current jockeys and commemorates those have been injured or lost their lives in racing. The day is celebrated around Australia with races named in honour of the occasion, while a minute’s silence and a blessing of the track will also be held. “It’s a special day for Mareeba Turf Club,” said secretary John Thurlow. “It’s not only the first race in Mareeba of the 2016/2017 racing season, but it’s a day dedicated to all jockeys. “We must respect and celebrate our jockeys,
as without them there would be no racing.” Off track, there will be heaps to keep racegoers entertained. The popular fashions on the field will be held between races two and three, there will be a jumping castle for the little ones and live music all afternoon. “There is something for everyone to enjoy, we try to cater for the whole family in Mareeba,” said Mr Thurlow. It’s also a special day for the stable, with punters encouraged to to say happy birthday to one of the thoroughbreds as they hit the track. Gates open at 11am, with the first of five races to start at 1pm. Come along for a full day of thoroughbred racing and off track entertainment. To book a marquee for the day, contact John on 0427 114 217.
A total of 74 points were scored and it was the Atherton Roosters who were the orchestrators of most, in a huge 64-10 win over the Yarrabah Seahawks on Saturday night, at Roosters Stadium. Coming off a strong win over second placed Ivanhoes the week before, the Roosters were full of confidence putting Yarrabah to the sword early in the round 18 match scoring seven tries in the opening session to lead 38-0 at the break. Yarrabah were more competitive in the second half, but the match was already well beyond their grasp. In the biggest win for the Roosters in 2016, there was a hat-trick to winger Jacob Rivett and centre Nigel Woodleigh – giving Rivett a total of eight tries from the clubs last three games. The twelve tries to two victory comes as the Roosters prepare for a busy back end of
the season. With four games remaining in the premiership race, the Roosters are booked for heavy assignments which includes Mossman (away), Brothers (home), Innisfail (away) and Tully (home), before the first round of semi-finals on September 4. Results of other first grade matches played over the weekend – Ivanhoes upset Innisfail 32-10, Mossman defeated Suburbs 4610, Edmonton downed Mareeba 40-14 and Brothers stopped Kangaroos 32-20. This Friday night, August 5, the Roosters play at Mossman, while the Mareeba Gladiators travel to Cairns to take on Ivanhoes. Cairns District Rugby League points table after Round 18: Innisfail 34, Ivanhoes 28, Atherton 25, Brothers 25, Mossman 22, Tully 20, Edmonton 16, Kangaroos 12, Suburbs 11, Mareeba 10, Yarrabah 9.
Bulls go down 1-0 to Stratford in tough game The Mareeba Bulls premier ladies shined brightly on Sunday with the ladies the only Bulls team to taste victory in a tough day at the office for the Bulls against arch rivals, the Stratford Dolphins. The ladies side, who have been one of the most improved in the FNQ Premier ladies competition, were able to overcome a plucky homeside 3-2. The ladies were able to enjoy victory, after the last few starts coming so close against the top four opposition teams. After going down 1-0 at halftime, the ladies showed all their fighting qualities to fight back and win the second half, and come out 3-2 winners. Samantha Cater and Alima Papa opened up a 2-1 lead, and a last minute (90th minute) winner from Romany Soley being the difference. For the men’s premier side, unfortunately the day did not go as planned. As the match wined down and the score locked at 0-0 – a draw looked like a prospect be-

fore the Dolphins snatched a last minute goal off a corner by second half Stratford substitute Kanjia Kamara in the 81st minute to win the game 1-0. In a very tough match, neither team looked like breaking the deadlock, but a referees decision in the 44th minute could have changed the game. The centre referee awarded a penalty to the Bulls and with Dennis Allen about to strike the ball, the linesman over ruled the decision and changed the penalty to a direct free-kick just on the edge of the penalty area – at the disgust of the Bulls players and supporters. In other Sunday games the Bulls reserves drew 2-2, while the youth lost 2-0. The youth B team drew 3-3 and the 2nd division men won 4-2 – keeping them atop of the FNQ 2nd division ladder. This weekend the Bulls travel to Leichhardt on Saturday, while the 2nd division men and youth B teams play on Friday night in Cairns.

Mcleish dominates Supermoto Champs
HOT SHOT: Andy Mcleish nabbed his second Australian Supermoto Championship at Mareeba on Sunday. RIGHT: Action from Sunday.
The Proserpine rider has been a regular on the Supermoto circuit since making the jump from motocross in 2010. That led to his first Australian championship title three years later in 2013 in the Pro class before clinching his second at Mareeba on the weekend. “It feels awesome to get it again,” he said. “It was hard as we were going back to back from Open straight into the Pro class, but I was just running smooth and trying to get the win.” Mcleish credited his new Husqvarna 450cc bike for the win, as well as increased sponsorship support for this season. “I like the power range and setup of it,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of sponsors come on board so we can go further with the bike.”
Hampton ready to fire for Cowboys THE father of Mareeba NRL star Ben Hampton believes his son has what it takes to shine at the Cowboys. Murray Hampton is wrapped his son Ben, 24, had signed a three year deal with North Queensland from next season, ending a 10 year association with the Melbourne Storm. “He’s enjoyed his time in Melbourne, he loves it down there and the Storm are a terrific club,” Mr Hampton said. “But if you’ve got to move on, you move on and try and make it a bit better for yourself as far as playing and game time. “He’ll be a bit closer to home now, which will be good.” Ben, a Gladiators junior who was recruited by the Storm as a development player when he was 14, has had a breakout season this year with the club’s first grade side after three years of being on the fringes. Despite having played as a fullback and halfback, his current role is as utility and Mr Hampton said his son would be eager to find out how he fitted in to the Cowboys overall setup. “He’ll be keen to see what the difference is in his positional play and

training,” he said. “But he won’t really know until he gets into it early next year, by the time they finish pre-season and it all comes together. “It’ll be up to the coach, Paul Green might use him in a similar role next season.” Mr Hampton said Mareeba’s rugby league community was excited by the prospect of Ben playing for the Cowboys. “The Gladiators are proud because this is where he started and he’s still going so it’s a big thing for them,” he said. Mr Hampton said Ben’s immediate focus was to finish strongly for the Storm, who look like serious grand final contenders after defeating the Cowboys 16-8 last Saturday in Townsville. “He’s there to finish off his year with the Storm and that’s what he’s aiming for, to do the best he can and help the team,” he said. Ben will officially join the Cowboys in November for pre-season training.
McLeish is now raising money to compete in the FIM Asia Supermoto Championship, which is holding four rounds in four different countries starting in Newcastle next month. For more information, Facebook search “Andrew Mcliesh Racing #217”.
WINNERS
A FLAWLESS performance by Andy Mcleish has led to his second Australian Supermoto Championship at Mareeba on Sunday. About 50 riders competed across six different classes over the weekend at the MakoTrac, with several local young guns participating. But it was Mcleish who led the way in the Pro (S2) class, dominating all four races to easily take first. The 24-year-old was set to do a double in the Open class before a penalty pushed him back to second. But Mcleish still wasn’t done, racing home to win the event’s “Dash for Cash” race at the tail end of the event. He even broke his own lap record previously set in 2014. “It’s a demanding track, as it’s got some fast speed and tight corners,” Mcleish said.
