Mareeba Lions club hosted the 2019 Lions Youth of the Year quest on Saturday night at the Mareeba Bowls Club.

The annual quest, a project of Lions International, is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community.

Judges look for a high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement in its potential winners.

By emphasizing these qualities its aim is to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women.

Eight students from St Stephen’s Catholic College and Mareeba State High School were put through an extensive interview process and then put to the test with two impromptu questions and a five minute speech on a topic of their choice.

The judges took some time to deliver a verdict of the win-

ners due to the quality of all the students that participated and decided to split the award between two students.

Roeith Geraghty, an inter year leader and sports house vice-captain from Mareeba State High school, received the public speaking award, while year 11 student Gamuchirai Makoti, also from Mareeba

State High School, was announced as the overall winner and was awarded the Tom Braes OAM trophy.

Gamuchirai will now represent the Mareeba Lions Club in the zone final where she will compete against the winners from Lions clubs across the Tablelands on March 9, 2019.

Last chance to apply for RADF grant APPLICATIONS for the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) 2018-19 Community Grant Round close tomorrow, Thursday February 28.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire

Council to support local arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities and strong regions.

The RADF grant round opened in January this year for projects to be conducted between May 2019 and April 2020. Individuals, groups and associations,

and arts and cultural companies within the Mareeba Shire Council area are invited to apply for funding for arts, cultural or heritage projects that meet the RADF objectives to build local cultural capacity, cultural innovation and community pride.

The local priorities for RADF

2018-19 are: cultural tourism, youth arts engagement and public mural partnerships. Applicants may apply for RADF grants of less than $10,000 and must show other sources of project income.

The RADF 2018-19 Community Grant Guidelines and Application Forms are available for

download. Applications must be submitted by 5pm Thursday 28 February 28, 2019.

KURANDA resident Jax Bergersen was present at last Wednesday’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting to officially put forward a petition for a divisional council.

The petition had 950 signatures from Kuranda residents and they hope that support will secure their town a dedicated representative for the election in 2020.

Principal practitioner Jax Bergersen said she was happy with the amount of signatures she accomplished in such a short period of time.

“950 signatures are great but we only attained half the signatures that we know are out there,” she said.

“We only had a month to do it and the extensive rain that fell recently curtailed it somewhat; however we feel the number of people we were able to get to sign the petition is still a strong indication of what the Kuranda

community wants.

“Thankfully we also have an electronic petition, so we’re seeing some more signatures coming through online which is great.”

Ms Bergersen said although the petition states that the entirety of the Mareeba Shire move to a divided council model, her main objective is ensuring Kuranda becomes a division in its own right.

“We don’t mind if the rest of the Mareeba Shire keeps its electoral boundary in the other areas; however we strongly believe our 3,000 plus population (in Kuranda) earns us the right of dedicated representation,” she said.

“So if there were to be five other councillors looking after the shire collectively and one looking solely after Kuranda, I think that could be a more realistic option in getting it passed in time for the next election.

“It’s an unusual council model, yet it is one where we would be cutting new ground which I think is fantastic.”

Ms Bergersen said with Kuranda being in the wet tropics, the issues the town faces are vastly different from the rest of the shire.

“A lot of the decisions made in Mareeba are not appropriate and applicable to Kuranda,” she said.

“So we want a voice on the council who are able to air and express the views of our community.

“Their opinions may differ at times from the other councillors; however it is still important that our community’s ideas and concerns are adequately tabled and listened to.”

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he doesn’t believe you can sensibly split one division from the rest of the shire.

“What you would end up having is one councillor for Kuranda and the other five councillors representing the remainder of the shire, which I don’t think would

be good governance,” he said.

“I would like to think you get a far better understanding and support system for the shire with an undivided council.”

Cr Gilmore said although it is technically possible, he can’t see it going ahead.

“I would be astounded if the Minister approved it,” he said.

“He would instantly see the potential imbalance and the lack of support for the dedicated Kuranda councillor, whoever that may be.”

Cr Gilmore said the next step

is submitting a report to council and covering the necessary avenues such as legalities and whether they would like to proceed.

Ms Bergersen also submitted a petition on behalf of Julatten, which received 71 signatures.

Mareeba business survey to evaluate value of tourism The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce wants to find out how much tourism means to the Mareeba business community.

The chamber’s Tourism Task Force Committee is rolling out a business survey to the business community to quantify the value of tourism.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said

tourism was fast becoming one of the main economic drivers for the region, with a study showing tourism contributed $60 million (direct and indirect) to Mareeba in 2016.

“Mareeba is blessed with a wide range of natural and manmade attractions, and there’s enormous opportunities to leverage off them to attract more

visitors,” Mr Moro said.

“However, for those not directly involved with the tourism industry, it’s hard to appreciate the value of the tourism dollar.

“The survey will help us quantify how tourism helps those businesses not in the traditional tourism-related industries.”

Mr Moro said the survey

complements the chamber’s recent push to do more to promote tourism in the Mareeba region.

This includes a series of tourism itineraries designed to promote Mareeba to the selfdrive tourist market and boost the number of visitors. The chamber will also survey visitors mid-year during Mareeba’s traditional peak tourism period.

THE medical superintendent role at a hospital is an extremely diverse one which entails the everyday supervision of a hospital’s practices.

Everything from ensuring the

hospital is adequately staffed, clinical governance, training of junior doctors, ensuring the provision of high quality patient care and managing its finances are all part of the enormous responsibility that comes with being in such a position – and it’s a responsi-

bility the Mareeba Hospital’s new Medical Superintendent Dr Nikki Patching welcomes.

Dr Patching has been in the role since the beginning of February, having left her position as a Senior Medical Officer at the Atherton Hospital where she had

worked for the past four years.

Dr Patching also gained invaluable experience as the acting medical superintendent during her time in Atherton, and it proved to be a source of inspiration for her in pursuing the role in a full-time capacity.

“It was there I obtained my Associate Fellow which helped me prepare for the job at hand.”

Dr Patching said she hopes to drive change at the Mareeba Hospital.

“There are many challenges that come with creating change in rural and remote areas; however it can be successfully done if we actively work in conjunction with the community and Queensland Health,” she said.

“I have been very impressed with the standard of doctors here at the Mareeba Hospital, so I’m optimistic about our chances in achieving the change we want to see.”

There have been passionate calls from community members in recent years for improvements to be made to the services offered at the Mareeba Hospital.

Dr Patching is aware of that and noted some of the objectives at the top of her agenda.

“We are pleased to be getting a CT scanner for the Mareeba Hospital as we have to send a lot of people to Atherton and Cairns for that service,” she said.

“Added to that, we will be upgrading the surgical theatre at

the Mareeba Hospital to make endoscopies and colonoscopies available for patients in the next financial year.

“We looked at the statistics and found that roughly 30% of patients that go to Atherton for an endoscopy and colonoscopy live closer to Mareeba area.”

“Ultimately my job is to strengthen all services, and I look forward to working closely with the Mareeba community to do just that,” she said. The endoscopy and CT scanning service are being introduced at the Mareeba Hospital as part of the Health’s Service Strategic Plan to deliver care closer to home.

Endoscopy services are anticipated to commence in the 2019/2020 financial year.

We are working towards starting CT scanning services at the Mareeba Hospital in December 2019.

Project teams are meeting regularly and we are focused on delivering new high quality services that meet the community’s expectations and service requirements now and into the future. With short and long term project planning.

THE after-hours in-home GP and telehealth service Call My Doctor has officially hit the Tablelands.

The telehealth service began operating on Monday while the in-home GP service is scheduled to start next month.

Call My Doctor Managing Partner Lindsay Stewart said he is proud to be bringing such an essential service to Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands.

“This community needs to sell the region to ensure important services are being provided in this part of Australia,” he said.

“We promised the North Queensland Primary Health Network and the Federal Govern-

ment that we would cement the market and reiterated to them that this is a long-term goal of ours, so to see this come to fruition is really exciting.”

The telehealth service will allow residents of the Tablelands to phone or video link an Australian RACGP Practitioner free of charge for minor ailments.

Call My Doctor will consult, issue scripts and a certificate when needed, with the extra bonus being the free delivery of their scripts by partner pharmacies in the region.

“This is the first time a telehealth service will be delivered on a mass market,” he said.

Mr Stewart said the in-home

GP service will be up and running once the doctors receive their prescriber and provider numbers.

“That process will take roughly 10-14 days,” he said.

“We are fortunate enough to have two full-time doctors come on board to ensure the in-home service goes ahead, which includes one doctor from Mareeba and one from Atherton.”

“We have worked tirelessly to get Call My Doctor off the ground and we’re really proud to have it here on the Tablelands.”

The Call My Doctor telehealth and in-home GP service is available from 6pm-12am Monday to Friday, 12pm-12am on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Councillor Gilmore said it had been a turbulent journey -–however he never lost sight of the potential to invest in the World War 2 airbase.

“The development was grounded a couple of times due to a change in government, fund-

ing availability and other circumstances,” he said.

“We have vigorously advocated for over a decade to see this premiere aviation facility developed and I am delighted to see the Aviation Park open for business.

“I have a basic rule, if you want to develop an economy, the first thing you do is take advantage of your natural assets. I saw this as a real opportunity to revitalise what was once a major Air Force base during the Second World War and create a unique opportunity to bolster Mareeba's economy.

“Mareeba Airport is in uncontrolled airspace, only 10-15 minutes by air and one hour by road from Cairns International Airport. Mareeba has a climate ideal for flying and we now have a first-class aviation facility right on our doorstep.”

The two-stage Mareeba Airport Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($10 million) and the Queensland Government ($13 million) and is being delivered by Mareeba Shire Council.

includes an upgrade of the runway, taxiways and airfield lighting to improve safety and permit use by larger aircraft. Stage 2 is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2019.

State Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Palaszczuk Government was providing $13 million towards the two-stage transformation, which will create an upgraded regional airport supporting 83 jobs.

“The upgrade to Mareeba Airport is one of the most significant events in the history of Far North Queensland regional aviation,” Ms Lui said.

“The new facility will increase employment as it becomes a base for development of regional capabilities in avionics and aircraft maintenance.

“Queensland’s aviation industry is gearing up for the future thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s continued support.

“The completion of Stage 1 upgrades is an important milestone for this project, which will deliver the essential infrastructure and facilities Mareeba Airport needs to become a key regional aviation hub.”

Northern-based Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald said he looked forward to opening the first stage of the transformation.

“This is a wonderful project and I am delighted that the Federal Government has helped the Mareeba Airport upgrade. These upgrades will create opportunities for more general aviation traffic at Mareeba, and help further the economy of the region,” Senator Macdonald said.

“Mayor Tom Gilmore and team have worked tirelessly for this project and I congratulate them all on their determination for their region.

“Catalytic infrastructure projects like the Mareeba Airport upgrade are essential to the ongoing development of Northern Australia.”

AS the political race begins to heat up with the Federal election just months away, Katter’s Australian Party recently announced their Queensland Senate candidate, Joy Marriott.

Ms Marriott is a North Queensland grazier who has previously held positions such as the President of the Cape York Peninsula Development Association and as the National Councillor on the Cattleman’s Union Australia.

Ms Marriott noted what it means to be named a senate candidate.

“It’s recognition of all the hard work the Katter’s Australian Party have done in North Queensland,” she said.

“I’m from Cape York, so I believe my background in rural industry and work in reconciliation with indigenous people will hold me in good stead for this position.

“I think it will be great to see a female from North Queensland as a Senator.”

Ms Marriott alluded to some of the important issues she will be covering if elected.

“An issue which effects all Queenslanders is the price of electricity, so I’ll be doing my best to ensure lowering that,” she said.

Ms Marriott said key federal issues which require addressing

are the price of fuel and insurance, water reform, and in particular, the significance of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund.

“One of the things I’ll be pushing for is instead of squabbling over the $5 billion that was given for the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund, we should be topping that up every year,” she said.

As we start to spend it, it

should be topped up to the extent of a billion a year, which allows us to diversify it into other industries.

“That is something I would really like to achieve.”

Ms Marriott said she is an extremely passionate Queenslander and that she looks forward to highlighting issues that the state’s public face, particularly those living in rural communities.

FOUR Mareeba not-for-profit organisations gathered at the Mareeba Leagues Club last Tuesday to receive a $500 donation courtesy of the Mareeba Lions Club.

The $2000 was kindly given to the Lions Club by an anonymous donor, which was subse-

quently split up and given to the Mareeba Men’s Shed, Mareeba Animal Refuge, Mareeba Meals on Wheels and the Mareeba Local Ambulance Committee.

A member from each organisation gave a short speech to show their appreciation and to

speak about what the money will be used for.

All four speakers expressed immense gratitude for the donation and noted the importance of the Mareeba community continuing to support the region’s notfor-profits.

MSHS curbing bad behaviour

IN light of the recent incidences that have been reported at Mareeba State High School, Principal Scott Whybird wanted the opportunity to put the community’s mind at ease as it pertains to the prevalence of violence and bullying that exists at the school.

The discussion has been raised after 16 students were disciplined for bad behaviour in the first two weeks of the 2019 school year.

Mr Whybird said there are many challenges that come with monitoring student behaviour, and he wanted to shine more of a light on those who are doing the right thing as opposed to the small minority who aren’t.

“I think it’s really important to celebrate the 98% of students who are positively impacting the school,” he said.

“We have a great collection of students who are extremely respectful and represent the school in the right manner, and unfortunately not enough of a focus has been put on their wonderful attitudes and behaviours.”

For those students who are engaging in violence or who are the victims of bullying, Mr Whybird said there are a number of support networks in place to ensure student safety is achieved at the school.

“We have a student services department, guidance officers, youth support coordinators, nurses, a chaplain and a school police liaison officer who will

be coming on board; which gives you an indication of how seriously we take our students’ wellbeing,” he said.

“From the school’s perspective, we are pushing for students to come to us and be open if they are victims of violence or bullying, as it allows us to get to the root of the problem and provide the necessary support.

“If staff members and I are aware of what’s going on, we can engage in mediation with the students, provide skills to students on how to deal with certain issues; and if necessary, discipline those who are being violent.”

Mr Whybird said violence will not be tolerated at the school, and that he has implemented an increase to the length of suspensions for those who are proven to have caused physical harm to another student.

“We are taking a really strong stance on violence at this school, which is why I have increased suspensions relating to violence from three days to 10,” he said.

“With that in mind, it’s important we’re clear that those suspensions are dependent on the context, as we can’t enforce a blanket 10 day suspension because every situation is different in some way.”

“So kids are turning up to school and showing exemplary behaviour for the most part – however that doesn’t mean we ignore the one-off problems

“We have to be vigilant in addressing them and I know we have the staff and support networks to do so effectively.”

Mr Whybird’s optimism about the successful systems established at the school was supported by the Federal Member of Parliament for the Bayside seat of Bowman, Andrew Laming.

ulate Mareeba State High School on their academic performance, stating that the school was in the top 10% for high school gains in Queensland.

Added to that, the gains achieved by last year’s cohort placed MSHS in the top 2% of the 370 Queensland high schools that produced more than 10 OP graduates.

“Statistics such as this are

great to see, and it reiterates how well we’re going across the board as a school,” Mr Whybird said.

“The majority of Mareeba State High School students, staff and parents are upholding the school’s motto of respect, organisation, learning and safety, and we’re confident that will continue to be maintained for the remainder of the school year.”

Changes to Emergency Relief THE Department of Social Services have made changes to their Emergency Relief (ER) criteria.

Under the new funding guidelines for Emergency Relief, it states that ER services are “restricted solely to people unable to pay their bills or at imminent risk of not being able to do so”.

Mareeba Community Centre Manager Julie Theakston said this means that all ER services are now based around assisting community members, in a financially

sustainable way, to pay off bills that they are struggling with.

“While we do still have the capacity to provide assistance for food such as vouchers for Community Pantry and/or Coles gift cards, this assistance can only be provided as part of an ongoing plan to assist with essential bill payment,” she said.

“As a result of these changes, our case management process for ER is now very different and requires a case plan which details

the agreed to actions of the client and of the service.

Mrs Theakston said in other words, we won’t just pay off a large bill for someone; they have to be willing to be part of the process.

“An example would be if someone were to want assistance for an $800 electricity bill, we would discuss and agree to a plan where they would pay off a certain amount, we would make a contribution, then they would pay

off another amount and so on,” she said.

“Where applicable, case plans will also include agreements to attend financial counselling or engage with other relevant services such as housing, family support, medical, and job networks.”

Big win for farmers in supermarket milk war WITH Woolworths’ unexpectedly announcing an increase in their milk prices last week, it serves as a crucial win for dairy farmers across the country who have been embroiled in a price war with the supermarkets since 2011.

As of last Monday, the contentious $1-a-litre milk has been scrapped from Woolies stores, with the move being applied to Woolworths branded milk only.

The supermarket giant is now charging customers $1.10 per litre of milk, with the 10 cent increase going directly to the farmer.

Last week’s decision has been lauded by the dairy farming community, with Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) State Councillor and Millaa Millaa farmer James Geraghty noting his jubilation about the news.

“This decision came as a huge relief,” he said.

“It was more of a boost to our morale than it was from a monetary standpoint.

“We’re still waiting to see the flow on effect this will have and get confirmation on whether we will see the full 10 cents as advertised.

“Nevertheless it is great news for the dairy farming community.”

Mr Geraghty said Woolworths’ announcement came as a surprise.

“We have been fighting tirelessly for this for eight years, and I would like to thank Woolworths for their attitude towards helping farmers,” he said.

“This is a step in the right direction for the industry; however we still want to see more done to

achieve true market correction.

“We want 10 cent increases on all drinking milk, which includes supermarket giants Coles and Aldi as well as smaller chains like IGA getting on-board too.”

Mr Geraghty added that along with a 10 cent per litre mark-up for supermarkets, he would like to see the same be applied to processors.

“With a complete 10 cent milk price mark-up, it will give the industry the chance to restructure,” he said.

Since the announcement, pressure has been mounting on major supermarkets Coles and Aldi to follow Woolworths’ lead.

A Coles spokesperson said the supermarket is committed to finding a better model that can be adopted by the industry to assist Australian farmers, and that they intend to liaise with relevant parties including government and the ACCC. “In the meantime, Coles will continue to look at ways to support Australian farmers, including by collecting customer donations at our supermarket registers nationally from Monday, February 25 until further notice. Coles will match these donations dollar for dollar,” the spokesperson said.

“Coles also knows that many customers in Australia face cost of living pressures and doesn’t want them to be disadvantaged through price increases.

“We also note that the ACCC has previously examined the Australian dairy industry and concluded that house brand milk pricing does not negatively impact farm gate milk prices.”

Those statements released by Coles were heavily criticised by Mr Geraghty.

“It is very disappointing to see Coles and Aldi have chosen not to adopt the 10 cent increase in milk pricing like that of Woolworths and is yet another example of Woolworths helping dairy farmers when others won’t,” he said.

“Woolworths set up a 10c milk levy to help farmers last year, which Coles refused to adopt.

“They eventually back flipped and implemented a levy; however it was only for a minimum period of time compared to that of Woolworths.

“It is clear that Woolworths are trying to do the right thing by the farmers.”

A strong supporter of fairer milk prices in the political arena has been Member for Hill Shane Knuth, whose advocacy most notably includes his involvement in the Katter Australia Party’s tabling of the Fair Milk Mark Bill in 2013.

Mr Knuth said the recent news of a 10 cent per litre milk rise through Woolworths is cautiously welcomed; however he said a 30 cent per litre increase was needed to save a collapsing industry.

Mr Knuth said dairy farming is disappearing in Queensland and more needs to be done by combined State and Federal governments to revitalise and save the industry.

“In the year 2000 we had 1,500 dairy farms in Queensland.

“Thanks to both major parties voting down the bill we now have less than 370 dairy farmers left in the state.”

Mr Knuth added he is continually dismayed that Federal and State politicians will march arm in arm with producers at rallies and make bold speeches but do absolutely nothing in presenting legislation or taking action to save the industry.

“If we continue this trend of inaction we will have no dairy farms left in Queensland within the next decade and will be importing all our milk from other states and overseas,” he said.

Mr Knuth added he was proud of his efforts to highlight the plight of Dairy Farmers, submitting two private members bills and continuing to fight for the industry in Queensland.

“I have also put a motion into

state parliament calling on all governments to pressure supermarket giants, that a 10 cent per litre increase be applied to every litre of milk sold in all supermarkets in all milk producing states, with the 10 cent increase going directly back to the dairy farmer,” he said.

“This would be a good start in helping to save the dairy industry.”

“It will provide the essential knowledge needed to more effectively manage your farm and will help farmers identify areas for innovation and improvement,” Ms Kruss said.

“Good business management practices are key to a successful, profitable and sustainable business.

“Farmers who are just starting

out, those with no business management training or those wanting to take their businesses to the next level have an opportunity to strengthen their business management skills.”

Since its launch in October last year, the project has received 100 expressions of interest from growers keen to strengthen their business management skills.

Under the project, the AHCSS000030 Farm Business Management Skill Set will comprise modules on business planning, business performance and budgeting, business structures and relationships and managing risk.

Workshops are tailor made – available in various formats including workshops and online modules – depending on the primary producer’s availability and capacity.

The training will be rolled out

monthly beginning in March.

To qualify to participate in the program, participants must be a current owner, manager or worker of a farm in North Queensland. Participation in the program will be at no cost to approved applicants.

Dates have been set for workshops in Mareeba (12 and 13 March), Atherton (14 and 15 March) and Georgetown and the Oasis Roadhouse (16-19 March).

Workshops in Innisfail, Tully, Ingham, and Rollingstone will be held in April, Burdekin, Ayr and Bowen in May and those in north-west Queensland in June, pending recovery from the flooding crisis.

Knuth trying his utmost to save the dairy industry The plight of the dairy industry has once again hit the head lines recently. On a recent TV panel discussion the ex Primary Industry Minister, Barnaby Joyce tried to blame the now opposition party in South Australia for another dairy farming family leaving

the industry.

No mention at all by Barnaby that it was John Howard’s LNP government that deregulated this farming industry, thereby consigning dairying to the scrap heap.

Shorten and Labour, now announced that the government should look to introduce a minimum farm gate price for milk, so that this industry in chaos might be able to survive. Where were they when

Howard set the deregulation into motion? The current LNP Primary Industry Minister told us all that we cannot go back.

So re-regulating the industry is out of the question. Deregulation has failed miserably where ever it has been carried out.

Not so long ago QLD had more than 1500 dairy farmers all making a fair income for their hard work. The Atherton Tablelands had over 300

farmers. Now we have less than 320 in QLD and less than 50 on the Tablelands.

Only the current Member for Hill – Shane Knuth, has tirelessly pursued a better deal for the dairying industry and has introduced bill after bill in parliament to try and get a minimum farm gate price for milk and hence re-boot this once thriving industry. To no avail however, as both the LNP and Labour refuse to do

anything about it.

The Tablelands once held the prize for the highest milk production per cow, beating all the other tropical dairying areas in the world.

We should think and remember, we once had 300 dairy farming families producing and spending, thereby boosting the Tablelands economy.

All our members are volunteers, a dying breed, but work hard because we believe in looking after this history for the generations to come.

APPROVED INSPECTION PROGRAM - DOGS LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 2009 & ANIMAL MANAGEMENT (CATS & DOGS) ACT 2008 In accordance with section 133 of the Local Government Act 2009 and section 113 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 Mareeba Shire Council resolved at its meeting on 20 February 2019 that a selective approved inspection program will be carried out on properties within Mareeba Shire, to monitor compliance with the registration requirements of the Animal Management Act 2008 and compliance with the provisions of Council’s Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2018 regarding the provision that owners must provide a proper enclosure to prevent their dogs from wandering.

Purpose and Scope of Programs To ensure that all dogs over the age of 12 weeks are registered in accordance with the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 and that the owners of dogs have a proper enclosure that prevents their dog(s) from escaping from their property. Council’s Authorised Officers will be visiting homes between the hours of 6.30am and 7.00pm Monday to Sunday, with the majority of inspections to be carried out during normal working hours, or at such time depending on the circumstances of the householder. The programs will run for a period of three months.

Program Times 1. The selective inspection program for compliance with the registration requirements of the section 46 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 will commence on 1 April 2019 and end on 30 June 2019.

2. The selective inspection program for compliance with section 14 of Council’s Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2018 - duty to provide proper enclosure and prevent the animal from wandering will commence on 1 April 2019 and end on 30 June 2019.

Properties to be Inspected Properties that may be inspected include properties in the towns of Mareeba, Mount Carbine and surrounds and any other streets in the shire identified as areas having issues with problematic dogs.

Access to Resolution and Program The public may inspect a copy of Councils resolution and the program at Councils office until the end of the program. These documents will also be available to view on Councils website www.msc.qld.gov.au until the end of the program.

1. Grease and line two 8 inch round baking tins. Preheat the oven to 160 C. 2. In a large mixing bowl, add the butter, sugar and vanilla and beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add in the eggs, one at a time, and beat after each addition.

3. Sift in the flour and baking powder. Add the milk and beat on a low speed until combined. Add sour cream and mix through then add the sprinkles and stir briefly.

Hot Shotz tournament proves a hit MAREEBA’S Arnold Park Sports Hall played host to the Far North Queensland Deadly Choices Hot Shotz Basketball Tournament recently.

The tournament was held courtesy of the region’s prominent indigenous health providers Mulungu, Mamu, Gurriny Yealamucka and Wuchopperen.

The event saw players from

across the region battle it out for basketball bragging rights in what was the tournament’s inaugural year.

The Mulungu outfit were victorious in the tournament, while the individual awards went to Stanicko Marama and Jakob Day, who received the Sportsmanship and Player of the Tournament Awards respectively.

Mulungu’s Corporate Services Manager Samanthia Dooley said the purpose of the event was to promote the Deadly Choices message of making healthy lifestyle choices and to encourage regular physical activity.

“Four teams from Mareeba, Yarrabah, Cairns and Innisfail comprised of young indigenous males from 15 – 18 years old and

SCHOOL students from across the region converged on Davies Park last week to compete to earn selection for their agegroup’s Tablelands District side.

The Tablelands District trials saw students aged from 10-19 compete in the sports of rugby league and netball, with their selection providing them the

Tablelands District rugby league coach Sam Harreman said the sporting event is a good opportunity to expose students to high-level competition.

Dolphins swim at State Titles

TWO swimmers from the Dimbulah Dolphins Swimming Club tested themselves against the best in the state recently as they competed in the State Titles at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre in Chandler, Brisbane.

Hannah McLeod, 16, and

Cayde Miller, 11, were awarded their spot at the State Titles after successfully swimming the required qualifying times at a meet in Mareeba.

At the State Titles in Brisbane, Hannah swam a time of 36.63 seconds in the 50 metre back-

stroke, while Cayde achieved a time of 35.64 seconds in the 50 metre freestyle event.

Hannah said she was pleased with her performance at the State Titles in Brisbane.

“I achieved the same time as my qualifiers,” she said.

“Leading into the meet I was hoping for a PB (personal best), however I was still happy with how I went.”

Hannah said the standard of competition in Brisbane was extremely strong.

“Some of the competitors there have swam in the Olympics, such as Emily Seebohm,” she said. “It was a great experience and I learnt a lot.”

Hannah said she would like to thank her coach Elena McDermott for her help in the lead-up to the State Titles, and noted that she will now be turning her attention to the upcoming Peninsula trials.

Weekend wins places Atherton in third spot

Atherton were at home to Rovers on Saturday with both teams fighting for third spot on the Cricket Far North ladder. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, getting off to a great start with Dylan Pettingill breaking the 1st wicket partnership at 44.

The bowlers worked hard but fielding was below par and Atherton rued several missed opportunities. Dan Parnell led the wicket-taking with 3-28, Tom Boorman snared 2-29 and Seppe Barletta, Dylan Pettingill and Paul Nasser took 1 apiece. Rovers closed their innings a competitive 9-175.

Atherton's chase got off to a shaky start losing 3 early wickets to be 3-24, before Fred Pittorino led the fightback. Down 4-50 at the halfway mark, Atherton required better than a run-a-ball

for their remaining twenty overs.

A 50 run 6th wicket partnership with Ethan Sanderson steadied things and kept the team in the contest.

Fred batted through seven partnerships showing patience and experience as the game hung in the balance, bringing up his century off 89 balls with a six.

In a fairytale ending for Atherton Fred then hit the winning runs with a six, and with four balls to spare, unbeaten on 107 off 92 balls.

On Sunday Atherton then travelled to Innisfail Sunday to play a catch-up match against Cassowary Coast with both teams missing regular players.

Atherton were sent in to bat by the home team, and were reeling at 4-19.

A rain delay midway through the innings saw the game reduced to 35 overs.

Atherton’s bowlers produced some of their tidiest figures for the season to stay in the game and put pressure on the opposition. Dylan Pettingill and Luke Parnell opened, picking up three early wickets in quick succession, Dan Parnell claimed another three, Paul Nasser took two and Michael Salerno accounted for one to dismiss Cassowary Coast for 62 and claim an unlikely 25 run win.

The two weekend wins cements third place for Atherton on the points table with a handy eight point buffer over fourthplace Rovers and three rounds remain.

TEAM spirit and broken records were in abundance last Friday as Mareeba State High School held their annual swimming carnival.

It was the students of the McKinlay house who were all smiles as they took home the aggregate girls’ and boys’ trophies along with being crowned overall winners.

Despite McKinlay’s dominance at the carnival, it was the individual competitors who stole the show as there were four records broken, two of which stood for 14 and 17 years respectively.

Ryley Cotter (2007 boys category), broke the 50m freestyle

and backstroke records, the latter of which was nearly three seconds faster than the previous record-holding time.

The remaining two records broken on the day was the 50m breaststroke, which was beaten convincingly by Liam Newlands (2003 boys category), as well as the 4x50m freestyle (2003 boys category) which was achieved

by McKinley.

Mareeba State High School Sports Coordinator Leonard Hodges said it was an extremely successful swimming carnival and noted that he would like to congratulate the students and

Northern Pride player allocations

THE Northern Pride has released their Cairns District Rugby League player allocations for the 2019 season.

The purpose of the player allocation is to ensure competition parity, and the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters will

be hoping their allocated players can bolster their respective teams should they don their jersey at any point this season.

Should the players be demoted from the Queensland Cup to the CDRL due to performance or otherwise, the Gladiators will

acquire the services of hooker Connor Jones and forward David Murphy, while the Roosters will get second rower James Clark and half Brayden Torpy.

Those additions will add serious punch to two sides who have recruited well in the off-season.

The Claude Cater Mensland Mareeba Bulls have finished the 2019 FNQ Football Chairmans cup as runner-up going down 3-0 in the final to the Southside Comets – the only loss over the course of the two weekend preseason competition.

This was the first hit-out for the new look Bulls outfit under coach Perry Krakowczyk and they were pooled with last year’s grand final winners, arch rivals the Stratford Dolphins and the 2019 surprise packets the Innisfail Cutters in a tricky group. The new competition required the Bulls to win the pool to be able to progress in the final of the preseason competition and after a 1-0 win against the Dolphins and a 2-1 win against the Tigers last weekend, a 0-0 draw against the Cutters on Saturday was enough to see the Bulls through to their first Chairmans Cup grand final.

In a tight opening half neither side could find a way through, and despite the final kicking off at 2pm in the afternoon and both

teams having already played earlier, the football was fast and frantic in the second period with the Comets coming out on top opening the scoring midway through to make it 1-0.

The Bulls only real chance of the second half fell to 15-yearold Milan Quintieri who burst past two Comets defenders and with only the keeper to beat just put his effort over the bar. With the Bulls legs running low and pushing for an equalizer, the Comets scored two goals in the last five minutes to round out the 3-0 win.

Despite the loss, the pre-season competition served well for the Bulls with Krakowczyk giving three 15 year olds Quintieri, Damian Avolio and Deane Alterio opportunities. Saturday’s games also saw 16 year old Serg Battistin return. The club also nominated a Bulls reserves team in the competition and came away with a 2-1 win against the Leichhardt Lions on Saturday morning, with coach Dennis

Allen also giving three 15 year olds the opportunity to shine with Josh Leporati between the sticks and young defenders Logan Acha and Daniel Rossi both playing strong roles.

The premier ladies side also played Saturday morning in a replay of last year’s grand final against the Edge Hill Tigers, and with a handful of new 15-year olds making their debuts, took the challenge to the Tigers before the away team’s quality shone

through eventually running over the Bulls 5-0.

The Bulls then took on Atherton in their last group match and turned in a strong performance, hitting double figures in the win.

Coaches Andrew Osbourne and Sandro Soncin were also using the match to give more 15-16 years a taste of ladies football.

All grades will now enjoy a weekend off with the competition commencing on March 9.
