Local designs gain national fashion acclaim HORSES passing the post weren’t the only attraction that took place on Melbourne Cup day last week, as Flemington also played host to the forever growing Fashions on the Field competition.

Everything from platform shoes to heels, boater hats to fascinators and an array of colourful dresses were on display as more than 180 women vied for the prestigious accolade.

The eventual Melbourne Cup Day Fashions on the Field winner was former Cairns woman Jordan Beard, who was sporting a dress and hat made

by Mareeba sisters Liana Hastie of Sonlia Fashion and Sonya Alba-Miller.

Mrs Hastie said having a client winning whilst wearing her and Sonya’s design was a welcome surprise.

“To be honest I didn’t expect this at all, I was there on the day and the fashion on display was outstanding,” she said.

“So to see Jordan win was amazing, she has been a client of ours for years and has become one of our best friends.”

Mrs Hastie said she believes Ms Beard’s success on the day came from being on trend.

“The Fashions on the Field competition on Melbourne Cup Day differs from the other days during the week, as wearing plenty of colour traditionally works in your favour,” she said.

“So when Sonya was creating the dress she made sure it all worked around the bright pink and red colours, the features and the sleeves - and because that was so dramatic, she also sewed on flower petals so that the sleeves were pronounced even further.

“It was then my job to match the hat with the dress, and Jordan mentioned that she wanted a boater style hat, so I brought in the natural fibre of the straw and accompanied it with a pink ribbon to stay in line with the

colour pattern.”

After winning Melbourne Cup’s Fashions on the Field, Ms Beard wore the same attire on Oaks Day to compete for the Victorian title, where she finished runner-up.

Ms Beard wasn’t Mrs Hastie’s only strong performer on the day however, as she also designed a hat for Warracknabeal woman Mary Viturino who achieved a top-ten finish.

The sister’s 2018 success comes just two years after designing a hat for the Fashions on the Field national runner-up Gracyn Marsterson, giving her further acclaim on the nation’s fashion landscape.

Byrnes Street mural is back

URBAN street art is a tool that has been used for generations to chronicle the cultural and economic foundations with which a town or city was built.

Mareeba is fortunate enough to boast a rich history that spans centuries, and with the resurrection of the mural on Byrnes Street, it’s a step in the right direction in recognising some of the town’s iconic figures and industries according to MSC Councillor Lenore Wyatt.

“It’s great to see the mural back up after all of the vandalism it had experienced,” she said.

“Street art does a fantastic job at introducing colour to our town and helps bring attention to parts of Mareeba that may have been forgotten about.

“With its fantastic design coupled with the great job it does in capturing our region’s history, I think it is a really special initiative.”

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro is equally happy the mural is back up.

“I think it’s important for Mareeba – murals are a great way to make the main street more attractive and showcase the culture and history of the community, I am glad to see it’s back up,” said Mr Moro.

The mural, located on the Capitol Arcade building, is courtesy of artist Loretta Taylor and was first put up in the early 2000’s.

KUR-World EIS raises questions AFTER the Environmental Impact Statement draft for the KUR-World development was made public in recent weeks, the divisive tourism project has encountered issues that will only create further debate on its viability.

One pertinent topic of discussion that has garnered the attention of community members is the increase in water allocations that will be required to maintain the eco-resort.

The report found that with the Mareeba Shire Council currently holding a permanent 460ML/year high priority allocation for the Kuranda water supply system, as well as

a number of other temporary allocations, that figure is set to increase as a result of the KURWorld Eco-resort.

In an Extract from the EIS’s Executive Summary, it highlights that Kuranda’s existing Average Day water demand (excluding any additional demand generated by KURWorld) is currently estimated at around 1.19ML/day (434ML/ year), of which is projected to increase to around 1.88ML/day (686ML/year) under ultimate (2030) conditions.

As a result of this, additional allocations will need to be acquired from the Ministry of Drinking Water Safety and Sanitation water market to accommodate planned growth in the township.

In addition, the report notes that it is estimated that KURWorld will generate a total Average Day water demand on the MSC water network of around 0.97ML/day (354ML/year).

The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, which is courtesy of the Mareeba Shire Council, raises money that goes towards the distribution of food vouchers to help families in need this Christmas, of which Q.I.T.E Mareeba donated a generous sum of $960.

“This is the fourth year in a row that we have donated to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, and it is something we are extremely proud to be a part of,” she said.

“This donation is also a great opportunity to recognise and thank the amazing efforts of those people working in our six community pantries throughout the region.”

Mr Lawson said it is the intent of the developer that KURWorld will seek certification under the EnviroDevelopment national rating tool developed by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (Queensland). This would provide independent verification of the project’s sustainability.

“The EnviroDevelopment program is underpinned by national standards and would assess the development across six areas – ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community,” he said.

Ms Trout’s colleague and Q.I.T.E Mareeba Team Leader Jane Ellis encouraged locals to get involved with the initiative.

“Anyone from the community who wants to donate, they can drop items into the community pantry or at any of our Q.I.T.E offices in the lead up to Christmas,” she said.

“It’s a worthwhile cause and one that goes a long way in helping the less fortunate.”

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore was extremely thankful for Q.I.T.E Mareeba’s donation.

“Christmas, as we know, is a time for giving to those less fortunate in our community,” he said.

“So thank you of course to Jillian and the team at Q.I.T.E for this generous donation.

“I am very appreciative and I’m sure those who we set up to assist at Christmas time will also be appreciative.”

The food vouchers are delivered to families who reside in Dimbulah, Julatten, Kuranda and Mareeba, and for those wanting to apply, assessment forms can be picked up at each town’s community centre.

Donations to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal can be made at Council’s service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda. You can also send a donation by cheque or via electronic transfer. Any donation over $2 is tax deductible. No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal.

Containers for Change in full swing Janet Kavanagh at Vinnies Mareeba is excited with the start of the Containers for Change refund Scheme.

NOVEMBER 1 marked the beginning of the Queensland Government’s Containers for Change Scheme, and although it is has only been in effect for just shy of a fortnight, it is already garnering great interest.

The scheme, which was established by not-for-profit organisation Container Exchange (COEX), allows Queenslanders to receive a 10 cent refund for each eligible container that is returned to one of more than 232 container refund points located across the state.

Mareeba has two refund points – Vinnies Mareeba on Walsh Street and Cash 4 Containers at 11 Bowers St, Mareeba.

St Vincent De Paul Mareeba store employee Janet Kavanagh said enquiries have been aplenty thus far.

“We have received a number of phone calls in relation to the new scheme which is great to see,” she said.

“The interest has come in a variety of ways, of which include agencies, the Council as well as the general public, so it’s clear that people want to get involved.

“The scheme has gotten off to a great start, and initiatives such as this ensure we’re moving in the right direction as a community.”

The overwhelming start isn’t just isolated to Mareeba, with Queenslanders turning up in droves across the state to be a part of the initiative.

Container Exchange CEO Ken Noye was ecstatic with the scheme’s first week, noting that more than five million containers have been returned and recycled.

“That’s a massive result

which is bound to have a positive impact on our environment,” he said.

“We also now have 27,000 people signed up with a scheme ID, allowing them to be paid their refund straight into their bank account.”

For those interested in getting involved with the scheme, you can do so by visiting the Containers for Change website and creating a Scheme Account.

Once in operation, you can receive refunds to your Scheme Account via an electronic funds transfer (EFT) by following three simple steps as per the Container Exchange website: Bag it: Place your containers in a bag. Your local Container Refund Point may provide this or you can use your own. Please note that single-use plastic bags will not be accepted.

WOMEN in Atherton will be the beneficiaries of an important new health service as the Atherton Hospital launched their Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model last Tuesday.

The model will provide women with the continuity of care, allowing them the opportunity to receive one-on-one care from a known midwife from their first antenatal appointment until six weeks after the mother and baby are discharged from hospital.

Atherton Hospital’s Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery Leonie Jennings said the Midwifery Group Practice model is a vital step in the right direction in ensuring mothers are provided with the best care throughout their pregnancy.

“The purpose of the MGP is to establish a really strong relationship between the mother and the midwife,” she said.

“That in turn provides the mother with a great sense of com-

fort and goes a long way in aiding a healthy pregnancy.”

Ms Jennings noted the enormous workload that has gone into the two-year project, and recognised those who have played an instrumental role in helping achieve the hospital’s considerable milestone.

“Firstly I want to thank the hospital’s Midwifery Unit Manager Dean Stevens, he has been crucial in managing the project and has done plenty of the leg work,” she said.

“I also want to thank one of our midwives Tanya Fleming; her continual push to make sure this model went ahead was something that we couldn’t have done without.

“And lastly I want to thank Heidi Brennan from the Atherton Midwives and Mothers Alliance (AMAMA) consumer group, her efforts along with the efforts of the other members of AMAMA in helping bring the community

together to support this cause was key throughout this entire process.”

Heidi Brennan from the Atherton Midwives and Mothers Alliance (AMAMA) said the group’s overjoyed MGP has commenced at the Atherton Hospital, representing the ‘gold standard’ of care.

“It’s a huge celebration, we’ve been fighting for this for almost two years, and this launch means that women can finally birth in their home town and not have to travel,” she said.

“I, personally am one of the lucky ones who gave birth during the transition stage of MGP being implemented at the Atherton Hospital.

“I have no doubt in my mind that having this care made my pregnancy, labour and post birth period easier, due to feeling comfortable and confident by forming a close bond with my midwife.”

THE Queensland Police Service’s annual Foodbank Drive initiative has hit the Tablelands in 2018, and Mareeba Police is calling on residents to be a part of the worthwhile cause.

The QPS Foodbank Drive is now in its second year, with its aim to collect seven tonnes of food for families experiencing hardship this Christmas.

Form a Bucket Brigade Students steal the show at school Presentation Night for McHappy Day McHappy Day is set to return to Mareeba on Saturday November 17 and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is calling on local community groups to show their support by forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to help the charity make McHappy Day the biggest and best year yet.

By getting a Bucket Brigade together, Mareeba locals who volunteer their time will be helping the charity to raise vital funds for RMHC to help sup-

port seriously ill children and their families.

As the largest fundraiser for RMHC Australia nationally, McHappy Day is crucial in raising funds for the charity, which helps keep families together while their seriously ill child undergoes treatment.

Since it first started in Australia in 1991, McHappy Day has raised more than $42 million for RMHC nationally, $4 million of which was raised in 2017.

Barbara Ryan, CEO of RMHC said, “every week, more and more families come to Ronald McDonald House Charities in need of support and accommodation, which is why McHappy Day is so important for raising vital funds for RMHC. The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for the Mareeba community to truly help RMHC make a difference for families in their time of need,” she said.

STUDENTS, staff and family members descended upon Atherton State High’s school hall to celebrate another successful school year and highlight notable achievements attained by their student body.

The awards night identified those who excelled in cultural, sporting and academic pursuits, and two young women stole the show with their impressive feats.

Atherton State High Year 12 students Lauren Ruscoe and Hayley Fullgrave had numerous accomplishments that ultimately led to them winning two of the most significant awards on the night.

Lauren Ruscoe was awarded Senior Dux, and she did so in emphatic fashion as she took home every Subject Award she participated in, of which included Chemistry, Mathematics B, Mathematics C, Physics, Aerospace Studies and English.

Added to that, Lauren also received an Academic Excellence Award and Merit Award.

Lauren said she was delighted to receive Senior Dux honours.

“Winning this award means all the hard work of grade 11 and 12 has paid off,” she said.

Despite her extensive list of academic achievements, Lauren showed humility when discussing her expectations prior to the night, and was quick to heap

praise on those who have contributed to her enormous success.

“I wasn’t sure if I was going to receive the award, however it’s something I’m really pleased to come away with,” she said.

“None of this could’ve been done without the help of so many people, so I would like to thank all of my teachers, family and friends who have supported me right the way through.”

Lauren said she plans to study Medicine at James Cook University in Townsville next year.

The other prominent high achiever on the night was school captain Hayley Fullgrave, as she went on to collect a number of awards in the sporting, leadership and academic categories, thus highlighting her exceptional versatility.

On top of winning arguably the most prestigious award of the night, Student of the Year, Hayley also took home the Silver Sporting Award, Senior Secondary Leadership Award, an Academic Excellence Award, Merit Award and the Drama Subject Award.

Hayley expressed her jubilance in winning the awards; all while crediting Atherton State High for providing her with a fulfilling high school experience.

“To win these awards is the biggest honour, it’s been a long

five years and being school captain this year has been extremely rewarding so to be recognised for my achievements this year is pretty special,” she said.

“As someone who is interested in almost everything, I really enjoyed the cultural and sporting aspects on offer at the school, and the opportunities they provide are limitless.

“From a personal point of view, Year 12 has been so enjoyable, it’s been challenging trying to balance my leadership and academic responsibilities, however this year is one I’ll never forget and it has taught me a lot about myself.”

Hayley said she would like to thank her best friend and Atherton State High’s former school captain Samantha Norris for her help throughout her senior year.

“Sam has gotten me through so much this year, she is such a role model and someone I really respect,” she said.

“I also want to thank mum and Chris, obviously without them I wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of this, so I’m extremely appreciative of everything they do.”

Hayley said she will be having a gap year in 2019, with intentions to study Medicine at James Cook University in Townsville the following year.

FREE information session: Sharpe Psychology’s Clinical Psychologist Kerry Francis and Psychologist Fiona Sharpe will be discussing mental health at the Sharpe Psychology practice on Hort Street this Saturday as part of Psychology Week.

Lifting the lid on loneliness MENTAL health has been at the forefront of national discussion in recent years, and that continues this week as Psychology Week began on Sunday.

Psychology Week is an annual nation-wide initiative courtesy of the Australian Psychological Society that aims to increase public awareness on how psychology can help Australians lead healthier, happier and more meaningful lives.

As part of the week-long initiative, local Psychology practice Sharpe Psychology will be holding an open information session this Saturday.

Each Psychology Week has a theme, with 2018’s being the Power of Human Connection, which focusses on helping people improve their social skills and connections, and enhancing their relationships.

Sharpe Psychology’s Clinical Psychologist and Chair of the Australian Psychological Society’s FNQ branch Kerry Francis said Psychology Week is a chance to highlight the things that are important for good mental health and psychological well-being.

“Having an annual event such as this helps promote mental health and creates greater public awareness,” she said.

“This year’s theme is an extremely important one, as it identifies some of the reasons that get in the way of one’s ability to have meaningful bonds with others.

“Humans are designed to be connected, we are social animals, but often through various causes such as family dysfunction, marriage separations and the like, certain people struggle to make those worthwhile connections.

“And when people are disconnected, it feeds into psychological unwellness.”

The information session will provide attendees with tip sheets as well as a card to store in your wallet which will offer ideas on how to get connected.

Dr Francis said the activities are of such importance as being connected with others is where we get our sense of purpose and meaning from.

“This information session is a great opportunity for the public to learn that it’s really healthy to talk about mental health like we talk about physical health,” she

said.

“It’s also a chance to reiterate that it is crucial to seek the necessary support, all while giving the community a greater understanding of what Psychologists actually do as some people still don’t know.”

Dr Francis said the stigma around mental health has become less apparent compared to previous generations.

“The concerted push from initiatives such as Psychology Week among many others has done a fantastic job at minimising the stigma surrounding mental health,” she said.

“Years ago people often didn’t speak about depression, it was never something that you could share, however nowadays you’re continuing to see more and more people speak up.”

However, Dr Francis noted that despite how far we’ve come as a society in tackling mental health, there are pockets that still require attention.

For those interested in attending, the session is free of charge and will be held at Sharpe Psychology at 11 Hort Street from 9am-11am this Saturday.

Community walks as one for cancer

TABLELAND residents gathered at Mareeba’s Davies Park for a worthwhile cause on Saturday as 2018 marked the tenth year of cancer fundraiser Relay For Life.

Tablelands Relay For Life saw roughly 170 participants take part in the initiative and more than $56,000 raised, much to the delight of Cancer Council Queensland’s Senior Coordinator of Regional Fundraising Jenny Coates.

“The response from the entire community has been outstanding,” she said.

“We had a target of $40,000, so to exceed that by so much is great to see, and we’re confident we’ll see that figure pass $60,000 once we add the on-site fundraising done on the day.”

Ms Coates said the day was a resounding success.

“Those participating provided such a good atmosphere,” she said.

“To see the Tableland community come together enjoying themselves and having fun is what this cause is all about.

“Added to that, it was also extremely important to remember those who we have lost.”

Ms Coates also took time to thank those who contributed to such a successful day.

“A big thank you goes out to the community for showing their unwavering support throughout this worthy initiative,” she said.

“I also want to recognise the volunteer Relay For Life committee, they worked tirelessly to ensure the day was a huge success.”

Painters exhibit impressive artwork

Painters in the Park founder Christa Youngman and member Jenny Mulcahy unveiled their artwork at the group’s annual art show last Thursday.

THE Mareeba Arts Society’s Painters in the Park exhibitors gathered at the Gallery Arts and Craft Centre last Thursday to unveil their impressive artwork.

The annual event provides members with the opportunity to display the artistic projects they have been working on for the past year, and Painters in the Park founder Christa Youngman said it was a chance for everyone in the group to express themselves through the form of art.

“All of the artwork on display today is wonderful,” she said.

“Art opens your eyes and for a lot of us it helps us appreciate

nature and the beauty of what Mother Earth can do.

“I started off painting to preserve natural things you may not see in 100 years, so that is where the inspiration for my pieces on display today were born from.”

Ms Youngman said there’s a good core group of artists who are currently members of Painters in the Park, however noted that she would like to see more locals get involved with the selfhelp group.

“It would be great to see an increase in membership,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter your skill

level or your age, it’s a group made up of people who are always willing to help and that’s why Painters in the Park is so special.

“Today is not only a great chance to sit back and look at the fantastic artwork on exhibition, it also reminds everyone of the great time we had along the way.”

2. Add the cream and stir very well then set aside.

3. When the bread pudding is ready let it cool for 15 minutes then pour the sauce over the top so it can soak in. You may not need all of the sauce.

Ford Cortina driver Owen Jonsson (pictured) has been named Driver of the Year at the Tableland Competition Car Club’s annual Presentation Dinner held on Saturday night in Herberton.

This year also marked the club’s 50th anniversary with a

major celebration held over two days back in September at the Tepon Speedway Circuit.

Championship placing for 2018 were – A Grade Owen Jonsson 1st, Kirk Poole 2nd, Andy Gamblin 3rd.

B Grade Cameron O’Flynn

JUMPING castles and inflatable slides are just a few of several exciting activities kids can now participate in at the Mareeba Gymnastic Club’s new JumpStars class.

Run on Friday’s, JumpStars is a casual session for children under the age of five.

The Mareeba Gymnastics Club’s Advanced Coach Kaydee McDonald said JumpStars is the perfect outing to please everyone.

“This new class allows the kids to enjoy safe and free play indoors while jumping on our large inflatable jumping castles, she said.

“It’s great for the parents too, as they can sit back and watch while enjoying a piece of cake and a cuppa which is available at our canteen.”

Ms McDonald noted the numerous benefits a program like JumpStars can have on a young child’s development.

“JumpStars is a great session as it helps build their social skills and self-confidence, all while giving them the chance to explore and use their imagination,” she said.

“Added to that, it also improves their balance, coordination and body awareness, and is a fun and safe way to keep your child active and entertained.”

Ms McDonald said JumpStars was a plan that was in the pipeline for quite some time.

“This has certainly been a long-term vision and it’s great to see it finally come to fruition.”

“JumpStars went ahead because of the enormous work that was put in by our Advanced Head Coach Kelly Tulloch; she has thought about doing this for a considerably long time and it couldn’t have been done without her.”

First grade were justly disappointed with their effort in the 40 over Cricket Far North match against Barron River at Trinity Beach on Saturday.

Winning the toss and bowling first, Atherton put in a decent team bowling performance to dismiss Barron for 117. Paul Nasser was promoted to open the bowling attack with Seppe Barletta, and picked up 4 wickets for 20 runs off his allotted 8 overs.

Logan Poggioli came on at first change and gave himself a hat-trick opportunity in his spell to finish with tidy figures of 2-16.

Mason Blaney contributed in the field with a wicket, 3 catches and a run-out.

Atherton didn’t recover as Barron broke through early taking the prize wicket of Dan Parnell in the first over and continued to put Atherton under pressure, consistently bowling good areas.

Chris Adams got the score ticking over early with a quick 21, and Paul Nasser dug-in while 5 wickets fell around him to topscore with 33. The last wicket partnership of cousins Logan and Joel Poggioli stuck it out to give Atherton some hope and deny Barron bonus points, falling 17 runs short of the target.

Roosters ready for season 101 Forward Luke La Rosa has extended his contract with the Atherton Senior Roosters and agreed to be back with the club for 2019 which will be season 101 for the red, white and blue.

La Rosa capped off an outstanding year in 2018 after representing Cairns in the Foley Shield and finishing in the top ten of the CDRL Gold Medal award count.

“I’m stoked,” La Rosa said.

“I have loved every minute since moving to the Roosters and thrilled to be staying for another year.

“My goal for next season is to see us go further into the finals and win the premiers title.”

After leading the first grade competition midway through 2018, the Roosters finished the premiership competition in second spot before losing their two finals appearances.

Also back at the Roosters for 2019 is fullback Nick Pratten who last played for the club in 2016. Pratten was recruited from Innisfail and played a major part in the Roosters push to the 2016 finals.

“I have had a couple of sea-

sons away from the game and feel really fresh and excited about next year,” Pratten said.

“The club’s on the front foot and I really enjoyed my last stint there.”

Pratten’s signing has come at a good time as 2018 fullback Reece Munster has informed the club that he will not be playing next year due to family matters.

Meanwhile head coach Graham Clark has named Thursday night, November 29 for the Roosters first training run from 6pm at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

“We want to be strong in all grades next year and this all starts on the training paddock.”

The Roosters expect to play two pre-season trials in early March before the proper season kicks-off.

Clark is keen to see players for all grades at the early sessions as the club builds towards another stellar season in the Cairns District Rugby League.

“The success we had this year was mainly due to us putting in

the hard yards at training and a strong attendance throughout,” Clark said.

“We have built a great group of youth and experience over the last twelve months and I have a lot of faith in them.
