CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has commenced the first stage of testing potential vaccines for COVID-19.

The testing, expected to take three months, is underway at CSIRO’s high-containment biosecurity facility, the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in Geelong.

“Beginning vaccine candidate testing at CSIRO is a critical milestone in the fight against COVID-19, made possible by collaboration both within Australia and across the globe,” said CSIRO Chief Executive, Dr Larry Marshall.

“CSIRO researchers are working around-the-clock to combat this disease which is affecting so many – whether it’s at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) or at our state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing facility – we will keep working until this viral enemy is defeated,” Dr Marshall said.

CSIRO is testing the COVID-19 vaccine candidates for efficacy, but also evaluating the best way to give the vaccine for better protection, including an intra-muscular injection and innovative approaches like a nasal spray.

Professor Trevor Drew OBE, is Director of AAHL and leading CSIRO’s COVID-19 virus and vaccine work.

“We have been studying SARS CoV-2 since January and getting ready to test the first vaccine candidates as soon as they are available," Professor Drew said.

“We are carefully balancing operating at speed with the critical need for safety in response to this global public health emergency.”

Dr Marshall said “Tackling disease and supporting better health outcomes takes a onehealth approach.”

“In 2016 CSIRO created the Health and Biosecurity research group who work with our scientists at AAHL to tackle our national and international health and biosecurity challenges together, so we can better protect the health of our people, environment, agriculture and industries and our way of life.” Dr Marshall said.

CSIRO successfully established a biological model in March 2020, the first in the world to confirm ferrets react to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).

Savannahlander train driver Will Kemp is now doing talks on Facebook about animals you may find on The Savannahlander route.

Animals of the Savannahlander LIKE so many, local train driver Will Kemp has had to adapt during the coronavirus epidemic.

Will has been the train driver on The Savannahlander for the past nine years, but after finding out that his job would stop due to social distancing rules and non-essential travel, he decided to put his previous skills to good use.

Before working on The Savannahlander, Will worked at four different Zoo’s across Queensland as an animal keeper and handler. He lost his job at the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve in Koah when it closed down in 2011.

Now Will’s career has come

full circle and he is giving social media talks about animals you may find on The Savannahlander route.

Will said due to The Savannahlander not running he had to adapt his job and wanted to keep posting on social media.

“I don’t want people to forget that we will be operating again soon and who we are,” he said.

“I wanted to keep posting on social media as it’s more important now than ever, not just to keep us top of mind, but also to keep people at home entertained.”

Over the next few months Will will be doing Q&A sessions and interviews with iconic

figures from the Savannah country, as well as introducing some of the animals you may see on the train.

“I always try and stop the train to pick up and move the wildlife that is on the track,” Will said.

“Some of the snakes I’ve handled include Black-headed pythons, Whip snakes, Eastern browns, Taipans and Goannas.

“I have also found Curlew’s nesting on the track and I have had to move Echidnas and giant burrowing cockroaches.”

Will has been working with snakes for more than 20 years and has a permit to relocate reptiles.

The Savannahlander is an outback train journey which begins in Cairns and has been voted one of the great rail experiences of the world.

It winds its way up from the Cairns via the Kuranda Range with stops at Barron Falls and Stoney Creek and Kuranda.

It then continues through the Tablelands and into the Gulf Savannah region ending at Forsayth.

COVID-19 update FOR the first time Queensland recorded zero new cases overnight (As of Monday, April 20), a great outcome for Queensland. The Queensland total stood at 1019 as of print deadline.

For the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), Queensland Health reported there have been 33 confirmed cases to date in the area. Five are active and 28 are recovered.

The most recent case was a pathology worker at the Cairns Hospital. So far, CHHHS have received COVID-19 test results for more than 80 people who are contacts of the con-

firmed case and all have been negative. CHHHS claims the pathology worker had no contact with patients.

Everyone who spent time in the pathology laboratory between March 19 to April 17 will need to be assessed and anyone who visited the laboratory between these dates and who has not yet been contacted, are asked to email Tropical Public Health Services with their name, phone number, when they visited the laboratory, and for how long, to EOC_TRS_CNS@health. qld.gov.au With some students going back to school this week,

CHHHS has also issued a parent alert.

The alert said “If your child (aged under 14 years) has a fever, or is unwell, these symptoms may be due to COVID-19. If symptoms escalate in a child or an adult, or you are concerned, see your GP, phone 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or present to your closest emergency department.

All CHHHS Hospital fever clinics will see children less than 14 years of age.

Our emergency departments across the Cairns and Hinterland Health Service remain open for emergency care and are always open.”

CHHHS also announced they have opened a Mareeba Hospital Fever Clinic.

The Mareeba Hospital clinic will operate from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4pm and no appointments are necessary.

There are also fever clinics at Cairns Hospital, Atherton Hospital, Innisfail Hospital and Yarrabah Hospital.

DEPUTY MAYOR: Mareeba Shire Councillor Kevin Davies was elected as the new Deputy Mayor at Council’s postelection meeting last Wednesday.

Davies voted new MSC Deputy Mayor KEVIN Davies has been elected the new Deputy Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council. At the first meeting of the new Council last Wednesday, the first item on the agenda was the appointment of the Deputy Mayor under Angela Toppin.

Local government runs in the Davies blood. Kevin’s father, the late Cedric Davies, served as chairman and councillor on the Mareeba Shire for 21 years.

With a passion for local government and the shire, Councillor Davies said he is looking forward to working with the new council and Mayor Toppin.

“I think I will compliment Angela's leadership with my experience,” he said.

“I have worked in the shire

for more than 20 years with experience in roads, sewerage, waste, and across the board.”

Councillor Davies also said the new Council was well balanced.

“We have a good mix of Councillors,” he said.

“We have three experienced Councillors, and three new Councillors, who together with the Mayor, will lead the community through these uncertain times.”

Mr Davies admitted that council will now look at ways to minimise the fallout from the current COVID-19 pandemic at the very first ordered council meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 (today).

“We are going to have a serious look at it at the next council

meeting, we are not sure what we can do about it. We still have to function as a council, so we still have to have money coming in otherwise our services go out the door,” he said.

“But we are seriously looking at what we can do to help residents.”

Mayor Angela Toppin welcomed and congratulated Cr Davies to the position.

“Councillor Davies is very passionate about the Shire and brings valuable experience to the table and I look forward to working with him,” she said.

The new Council will meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 9am.

Council freezes pay increase

New TRC finally declared THE new Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) was finally declared on Sunday, April 19, at 6pm.

After three weeks, the Electoral Commission of Queensland announced that

it had declared all seats, with the newly elected candidates sworn into office on Monday, April 20.

The new Council will be lead by Mayor Rod Marti and the following councillors.

MAREEBA Shire Council has put a freeze on pay increases for both Councillors and employees amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mayor Angela Toppin, who moved the motion at last Wednesday’s post-election meeting, said during this time of uncertainty Council voted not to take an annual pay increase.

staff that are at the discretion of Council will also be deferred until further notice.

“By deferring staff increases and keeping costs to a minimum, we will be able to protect jobs,” Cr Toppin said.

“We recognise that many members of our community are struggling financially as a result of this pandemic and Council will do whatever it can to minimise the impact within our very limited capacity.”

Mareeba farm adapts to demand THE demand for hand sanitisers and cleaning products has spiked amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and one local farmer has retooled his entire farm to meet the growing demand.

The farm is operated under ‘Australian Natural Products’ and produces native Australian Lemon Myrtle which has natural antibacterial, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

When distilled into essential oils the plant can be used in personal hygiene and cleaning products including the highly sought after hand sanitiser.

Australian Native Products Agronomist Terry Mather says the farm has been kicked into full gear looking after the supply and demand of the lemon myrtle essential oil.

“The demand for the essential oil wasn’t a big part of the business before,” he said.

“The oil manufacturing has now exploded and has pushed to the front.

“It’s a good thing people can see the good properties of this

Calls to support FNQ growers during COVID FNQ Growers, the leading Far North Queensland industry group that represents more than 300 growers across the region, has urged the Federal Government to prepare to offer a lifeline to horticultural growers as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said some fruit and vegetable commodities were already feeling the impact of COVID-19 restrictions.

“The market for some produce including the bottom end of the for avocadoes, limes, melons and papayas has been lost, as a consequence of the forced closure of some sections of the hospitality trade,” Mr Moro said.

“We are also receiving reports of price reductions in some fresh food markets as household budgets are impacted and consumers electing not to buy foods, they consider luxuries, leading farmers to leave to produce in the field.”

Mr Moro said while industry was confident there would be a steady and stable supply of fresh fruit and veg-

etables to feed Queensland, it was imperative that plans are in place to help support our growers financially.

He praised the Government efforts to date in addressing industry challenges including extending working holiday visas for international workers until the pandemic passes and ensuring access to freight and transport, agricultural supplies and services.

“These measures go a long way in giving our growers the confidence to confront the challenges they currently face, while continuing to grow and supply produce to all corners of Australia,” Mr Moro said.

“But the issues being experienced in some commodities currently, is causing concern for other growers who are yet to harvest this year’s crop.

“The assistance may not be required immediately, however, measures to support growers financially need to be put in place if anticipated impacts are realised.”

Australian Native Products CEO James Gosper says the demand has been so high for products that the companies’ entire Mareeba farm will now focus solely on the products in demand.

“The company has experienced a big jump in enquiries relating to hand sanitiser and a 70% increase for cleaning products as the world responds to the COVID-19 crisis,” said Mr Gosper.

“In the space of a week, our Mareeba farm has gone from turning 95% of its harvested lemon myrtle into dried leaves, to distilling 100% of the crop into essential oil.

“Lemon myrtle has powerful antibacterial properties, is antifungal, antimicrobial and completely natural – all attributes that people are looking for right now.”

Mr Gosper also expects to produce more than 300 litres of lemon myrtle essential oil between now and June.

Closures affect local farmers ONE of the ironies of Coronavirus is that with the closure of pubs and clubs across Australia, people have stopped ordering Corona’s with lime.

On top of this add vodka, lime and soda, mojito’s and the hundreds of other drinks and meals that require lime and there is now a lime slump affecting locals farmers.

Jose and Debbie Caamano from Quality Caamano Fruits in Mareeba said they felt the closure of pubs, clubs and restaurants almost immediately.

“It’s a challenging time for us, but we’re just taking it day by day. The shutting down of the hospitality industry has hit us hard.” Jose said.

“Limes make everything better – in the kitchen for flavouring, in your favourite drink and being anti-bacterial, they make excellent homemade cleaning products too.”

Debbie said that their sales are down at least 50% on last year.

“We are throwing away or donating bins of fruit because the agents only want first grade,” she said.

“At the moment we are getting $9-10 a box, over Christmas we were getting around $30 a box.

“As soon as the bars and pubs closed the slump on limes was immediate.

“We already had fruit on the way when the closures came in so we donated that to food bank.”

Farmer Gerard Kath, President of Papaya Australia, said that Papaya (paw paw) has also seen massive drops in demand but for different reasons.

“The closure of the pubs and clubs didn’t hurt Papaya farmers as hard as lime farmers, but we do sell a lot of tropical fruits to the airlines and international hotels and that has really hit us hard,” he said.

“Going back a few weeks ago, the demand for fruit was really strong, because people were panic buying, and then a few weeks after that the demand fell for Papaya and discreationary fruits.

“We have seen a 50 per cent drop in demand, across the board.

“A lot of farmers have had to drop production, they have started culling some of their old blocks.”

LIGHT UP THE DAWN: Mareeba historian Elwyn Troughton will be standing on her driveway this Saturday at 6am to pause, remember and reflect.

THERE has never been a more important time to pause, remember and reflect. With ANZAC this Saturday and as coronavirus restrictions remain tightly in place, many Queenslanders are considering how they will mark the national day of remembrance.

Due to COVID-19, traditional dawn services have been cancelled, there will be no marches and no Two-Up, but we are being encouraged to stand on our driveways, gates, balconies or verandahs at 6am and commemorate ANZAC day in our own way.

“As a result of restrictions to this year's formal Anzac Day commemorations, the RSL encourages people to light up the dawn and remember and pay respects from home,” an RSL Australia spokesman said.

“The RSL is calling on musicians everywhere to play the Last Post and Reveille for neighbours.”

St Stephen’s Catholic College student, Luke Rantucci, has been playing musical instruments since he was five and according to his mum Rosie it will be the first time playing the last post on his own.

“He has been playing for nearly 10 years and he has played the last post at school with the school band in the past,” Mrs Rantucci said.

IN this time of uncertainty, it is more important than ever that the ANZAC spirit of mateship, endurance and courage continues to shine through.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said while the cancellation of traditional ANZAC Day services is sad, residents are encouraged to pause to remember and reflect.

“We may not be able to stand together as we usually would, but we can still stand united in spirit,” she said.

“While we cannot gather at places of significance to hon-

legacy. We must use our ingenuity and unite in spirit to honour Defence personnel, past and present, and ensure their service and sacrifice is not overlooked or forgotten.”

Mayor Toppin is encouraging residents to join in the RSL Queensland’s ‘Light up the Dawn’ pledge.

“At 6am this Saturday, stand in your driveway, on the footpath or in your living room, light a candle or commemorate however you see fit and pause for a moment to remember all those who have

served and sacrificed,” Cr Toppin said.

The Queensland RSL will be live-streaming a small service on its website and Facebook page from 6am on Saturday 25 April 2020.

Australian jazz musician James Morrison has backed the calls on brass musicians to play the Last Post at 6am in their driveways on Anzac Day “in the name of mateship”.

In a Facebook video that has been viewed more than 450,000 times, Morrison said while coronavirus restrictions meant Australians could not gather for usual Anzac Day services, "we can still stand united in spirit".

He said the feeling will be powerful, across the country, “when people hear that song on that morning and know that we're celebrating Anzac Day as we always do — to remember our Anzacs who fought in all wars”.

Morrison's posts have garnered support from the country's RSLs, with people pledging to join the campaign.

At present, the bridge has a 5-tonne limit, and Council needs to carry out significant works to reinstate the capacity back to 44 tonnes.

Mayor Angela Toppin said it is vital that Council maintains critical infrastructure. "The project will take approximately three months to complete and we will be communicating the progress of the works with the community," she said.

“We thank the community in advance for its understanding, patience and cooperation as this project gets underway.”

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government's Bridges Renewal Program, the Queensland Government's Works for Queensland Program and Mareeba Shire Council.

Anzac Avenue bridge upgrade commences

PRELIMINARY works to upgrade the John Doyle Bridge on Mareeba's Anzac Avenue have commenced.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said safe access for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will be maintained during the upgrade project.

“Council will be constructing a temporary crossing to enable people to walk, run and cycle across the Barron River while the works are being carried out,” she said.

During the construction phase, the bridge will remain closed to all vehicular traffic.

Motorists will expect traffic delays and there will be detours put in place to get to and from the CBD from the eastern side of town.

Hill MP writes scathing Increase in blood donations letter to Health Minister MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth has written a scathing letter to the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Steven Miles asking for more regular and detailed updates regarding COVID-19 from the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS).

In the letter, Mr Knuth requested the Minister investigate why CHHHS was not providing a simple breakdown of COVID-19 cases.

“We have asked for this information daily since a teleconference with Chief Medical Officer Jeannette Young and crossbenchers over two weeks ago,” Mr Knuth said.

“I raised the issue of the need to provide a breakdown of the location of COVID-19 cases across the CHHHS region for constituents to be better informed which Dr Young had agreed on that position.

“A breakdown in the regions provides reassurance, vigilance, eliminates rumours and overall people have the right to be informed.

“COVID-19 is affecting everyone from all different walks of life and background. In a pandemic like this transparency and communication are paramount.

“We have received some information regarding break-

downs but only in trickles.

It is not good enough for the CHHHS region, which takes in so many council areas, to just say we have 32 cases.

“It is time that CHHHS management stop withholding information about the location of cases, both active and recovered.”

All across the nation donation centres have had appointments booked up for weeks with people coming in donating blood and plasma, there has also been a decrease in appointment cancellations.

The donation centre in Cairns has seen an influx of new and returning donors now being booked up for the next four weeks.

Regional Partnerships Group Account Manager Jacinta Jeffrey stated that the donation numbers have always been high in the far north but they’re still growing.

“We have had a lot of regular and donors who have decided to do something nice and donate blood to someone who needs it,” she said.

“The community spirit in the far north is amazing.

“We are very thankful for all the donations as the need for blood never stops.”

AS part of normal patrols over the Easter long weekend, Police were out and about ensuring community members were compliant with the Chief Health Officer’s (CHO) directives and for the most part, the Far North adhered to the advice.

Far North District Officer, Chief Superintendent Brian Huxley said he was happy with the behaviour of the Far North community over Easter.

“It’s good to see that people are heeding the message, they are taking notice of the Chief Health Officer’s directives,” Chief Superintendent Huxley said.

“This is about saving people’s lives and protecting a community and in this case, the people in far north Queensland are doing really well.

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes also agreed.

“Our Tableland Patrol Group has had some minor breaches, but generally our Tableland and western communities are some of the best locations in Queensland whilst the COVID19 requires strict compliance in our country,” he said.

“Our Tablelands Patrol Group Police officers are very keen to assist our communities and citizens to ensure protection against the Corona Virus.”

Tabeleands police issued seven infringements to people over the weekend for both travelling when not essential and for holding parties.

Five were issued to people who were drinking and playing cards at Lake Eacham, two were issued to homeowners who where having a party at Ravenshoe and the other was to a person who wanted to camp the night at Tinaroo.

Over the same weekend Doomadgee police also arrested and charged two men and a woman with breaches of Biosecurity Act. On April 12, two men and a woman who reside in Townsville entered the ‘restricted Biosecurity area’ and allegedly told a border control officer they had self-isolated in Townsville for 14 days prior to entry as per current policy.

Local police commenced enquires within the community and it was determined that the trio had not self-isolated for 14 days and were arrested.

All three were charged with one count each of failing to comply with an emergency requirement – (Biosecurity Act (Cwth) S 479(3)) and failing to comply with COVID-19 public health direction CHO (Public Health Act, QLD S326D).

Boost to DV services during COVID-19

THE Queensland Government has announced an injection of almost $5.5 million to help manage an anticipated increase in demand for domestic violence services arising from the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that domestic and family violence may increase during the coronavirus crisis due to increased financial pressures and social isolation.

“We’re boosting support for essential government-funded services, so people have someone to turn to and somewhere else to go if they need,” the Premier said.

also announced there is now a new domestic and family violence reporting tool available via the Queensland Police website.

Amanda Lee-Ross, CEO of Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service, said that they had noticed a spike in online searches for domestic violence support.

“Currently we are seeing a downturn in face-to-face meetings regarding domestic violence support due to lockdowns, social distancing and due to some of our staff working from home,” she said “But we are seeing a spike in Google searches for domestic

violence support and services, this could be due to the perpetrator being at home, the victim not feeling safe to leave home or people being afraid to breach lockdown rules.

“There may also be an increase in violence at home due to the financial strain on families who are reliant upon income from insecure work.”

Ms Lee-Ross said that people fleeing a violent situation are not liable when it comes to breaching lockdown laws.

“If anybody needs to leave home due to family or domestic violence they are exempt from any laws regarding self-isolation or social distancing.”

A NEW ‘Pledge Local Mareeba’ campaign has kicked off this week and urging locals to simply ‘put your dollars where your heart is’ and support local business.

Spearheaded by the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre via a dedicated Facebook page, the campaign aims to help the Mareeba community connect with Mareeba businesses that remain trading or who plan to reopen.

With falling visitor numbers and social distancing rules in place, the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre closed just over a month ago. Since then staff and volunteers had been wondering how they could pass on vital information as to which business are still open, which businesses were now taking phone orders or which businesses had diversified.

Last week the ‘Pledge Local Mareeba’ Facebook page launched as a way of keeping everybody in the loop and allowing businesses to pass on their new trading details.

and Visitor Information Centre, Janet Greenwood said the Facebook page is a way of passing on vital information to locals and visitors.

“Since the crisis, we had been contacting local businesses to ask what their trading hours were, we then had to close our doors and we had a re-think of what we could do for our community,” Janet said.

“We started the Pledge Local Mareeba Facebook page as a way to provide a community service and give some support to local businesses who still have their doors open.

“It also gives us the information we need when we are supporting members or visitors to the community.”

Local business can post details if they have had any change to their trading hours or any other relevant parts of their business.

The Mareeba Visitor Centre is still contacting our tourist operators, accommodation places, hospitality venues, cafes, butchers, independent grocers to check trading hours or service changes and they will update the page accord-

ingly.

The Facebook page also supports the Visitor Information Centre to provide up to date information.

Posters and social media tiles can also be downloaded, printed and shared and for any business who wants to pass on their information, the service is completely free.

While visitor numbers to the region have crashed, specifically grey nomads and self-drive tourists, Janet says there’s still the odd backpacker or fruit picker looking for local business information.

“We still get some people who are in transit or who are a bit lost, as the caravan parks have closed and they are now stuck in no man's land.”

The page is a place where Mareeba businesses can like and tag the Pledge Local Mareeba Facebook page to share their trading hours, specials, stories and business offers.

Community sew scrubs for Mareeba Hospital MEMBERS from the Mareeba community have banded together through this trying time and have provided the Mareeba Hospital with scrubs for the staff to wear while at work.

These scrubs are used during this time of national crisis where our essential health workers have to be in contact with people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The scrubs were identified by staff at the Mareeba Hospital as a way to minimise the risk of transmitting the virus through clothing and making sure not to take it home.

60 scrubs were sewn by members of the community from

fashion designers to Days for Girls Mareeba.

Some of the ladies at Days for Girls were approached by Mareeba Hospital Staff and were asked with making the specific scrubs needed out of the proper materials.

Ross Clarksmith, the Director of Nursing and Facility Manager at the Mareeba Hospital, is ecstatic about the support the hospital is receiving.

“Our staff are very grateful for the support of the community particularly during this COVID-19 response,” he said.

“We have systems in place for personal protective equipment (PPE) to make sure that when

staff reach for PPE, it is there every time.

“The donated scrubs are not PPE but they are bright and colourful and are a lovely addition to the staff uniforms.”

Mr Clarksmith also stressed that any interested residents who would like to donate home-made scrubs to the hospital are encouraged to contact the Mareeba Hospital before hand.

The organisers and sewers of this project wanted to remain anonymous. That goes a long way to show the modesty and humility of the many Mareeba people involved and shows how well the community pulls together when the going gets tough.

Special protections for tenants WITH unemployment expected to hit 30 per cent the State Government last week unveiled measures to implement a freeze on evictions.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad is encouraging tenants, property owners and agents to work together to sustain tenancies.

“It’s not in the interest of anyone to have tenants left without a place to go when we are fighting to prevent the spread of a deadly disease,” she said “We will not allow anyone to be evicted because they can’t pay their rent as a result of this crisis.”

The State Government has launched an online rental hub at www.covid19.qld.gov.au/ the-hub to provide information and resources to support discussions between property owners and renters.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said that Queenslanders would always rally to support each other when times were tough.

“For those that can’t reach an agreement, there will be compulsory conciliation for COVID-19 related disputes between tenants and landlords through the Residential Tenancies Authority,” he said “In asking tenants and property owners to find a solution that works for all parties, the RTA will have clear guidelines that prohibit a requirement to draw on superannuation, or sell basic personal assets.”

Mr de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Government will implement the National Cabinet decision to freeze evictions due to rent arrears for Queensland tenants impacted by COVID-19.

New protections now mean that property owners will be prohibited from evicting a tenant if their lease expires during COVID-19 public health crisis.

“This means that a property owner must offer an extension to the lease for at least a further 6 months,” said Mr de Brenni “Alternatively, if a tenant

cannot pay rent due to impacts of coronavirus and wants to end their lease early, they will be allowed to do so.

“Tenants will still be required to demonstrate respect for their property and neighbours by maintaining their home in accordance with their tenancy agreement.”

But for owners of an investment properties in Queensland, the Palaszczuk Government’s proposed Special COVID-19 Protections for tenants could be disastrous.

While the peak body for real estate in Queensland, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), supports the need for tenant protection during COVID-19, they are fundamentally opposed to some of the proposed measures and wants to ensure landlords understand the protections.

As a landlord, you will ultimately foot the bill if some of the proposals are introduced.

New way of learning begins A NEW way of school life kicked off this week. With the school holidays coming to a close, students would normally be ushered back into classrooms, however this is not going happen for at least the next five weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While schools across the State are operating, the normal school structure that many students have become accustomed too, has been reworked.

Home based learning is now what students, their parents or carers and teachers will need to get used to.

All students will now be learning from home, except for vulnerable children and children of essential workers on days when they are not able to be supervised at home. An essential worker is any worker who must continue to attend their workplace for essential business during this time.

Mareeba State High School (MSHS) remains open to those students who need it, but Principal Scott Whybird is encouraging those students who can learn from home to do so as classes at the school virtually don’t exist.

“We recommend that if no alternate supervision is available the school will remain open, but for the safety of the staff and students we recommend home schooling,” he said.

“The teachers have been working overtime to get all their resources and lessons online for students to access.

“What we have achieved in

only a week as a teaching staff is amazing.”

The new home-schooling system has been implemented by schools across the state and has opened up many doors for education.

With the new system teachers can keep in constant contact with students and help them through the lessons and the work offered online.

Education Queensland has recognised the pressure COVID-19 puts on students in their final two years of schooling and Mr Whybird assures senior students there is no need to panic as “the system will look after the students.”

“I am aware of the pressure that our senior students are under,” he said.

“But this is happening across the state and they will not be disadvantaged due to this pandemic.”

Home visits for regular check-ups on disadvantaged students as well as phone calls home are just some of the precautions MSHS is taking to make sure all their students are learning.

St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) has also launched an online learning platform that allows there students to stay connected with the college, staff and peers.

“We are interested in supporting students learning whether it be from home or from school,” she said.

“I am most grateful for the work and wisdom of our teachers and staff who are dedicated to finding ways to make connections with our students.”

The decision has been blanketed across the state by Education Queensland due to the

social distancing rules and other precautions. This measures are in place for the next five weeks and will be assessed again mid -May by the State government before a decision is made.

The paradigm has shifted Last week pop singer Justin Timberlake made some comments that haven’t gone down well with parents across the globe.

The entertainer appeared on American radio and said that while he and his wife Jessica Beil are doing fine during the coronavirus pandemic, they might need some space from their 5-year-old son Silas.

“We’re mostly commiserating over the fact that 24-hour parenting is just not human,” The fall out was swift with tweets like “Hey @jtimberlake, cry me a fxxxing river about how you’re stuck in a mansion and “24-hour parenting isn’t human.” While I’m working as a nurse, trying to spend time with my kids but hoping I don’t contract this awful virus to spread to my family; you enjoy your life of leisure.”

Most comments followed the same thread, the paradigm has well and truly shifted during the current COVID-19 crisis.

Not that long ago, we were hearing regularly from vapid minds like the Kardashians/West and getting minute details on their every move. Was anyone else sick of hearing that Meghan Markle was moving to Canada?

But now thanks to COVID-19 it seems like we have a new stable of stars who are rocketing up the charts. People whose words we hang off like every syllable is life or death…because it is.

People like Professor Brendan Murphy who is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the Australian Government and is the principal medical adviser

to the Minister and Health.

People like Alison McMillan the Governments Chief Nurse and midwife.

We have also started to pay a lot more attention to our Doctors, Nurses and Scientists.

How much more do you think teachers are worth, now that we are all staring down the barrel of five weeks of homeschooling.

In the scheme of things who is more important to you day to day life, Justin Beiber or the person who cleans and disinfects the trolleys and hand baskets at your local supermarket?

If there is another silver lining to the dark grey cloud that is COVID-19, it’s the suspension of reality TV shows like Married at first sight, Big Brother and any show that involves building and/or renovating.

Instead of daily updates on what these so-called celebrities are eating/buying/wearing/dating, we are now glued to daily updates on how we can keep our families alive.

But the biggest trophy for trying to remain relevant while the world moves on must go to the NRL. The NRL has been weaving and ducking trying to get their 2020 season back on, not for the sake of the fans, but for the sake of the sponsors, TV rights holders and club owners.

Have a think who should be paid more. The boof head bloke who can run, catch and kick a ball?

Or the nurse who works 12 hours a day risking her life to take care of others?

Dress up and take the bin out WITH people practicing social distancing and isolation, many have exhausted all the normal avenues of entertainment pretty quick. But there is a new form of entertainment – Bin Isolation Outing.

How to make an ANZAC wreath Australia will commemorate ANZAC day a little differently this year, so in honour of ANZAC day on April 25, 2020, we have provided some outlines of poppies and leaves for the kids to cut out, colour in or paint and create their own ANZAC Day wreaths.

Supplies you will need Colouring pens/ pencils or paints Scissors Glue Paper dinner plate

Creating your wreath 1. Fold the dinner plate in half and cut out the centre of the paper plate leaving the outer ring.

2. Unfold your dinner plate so you have a ring shape. This will form the base of your wreath.

Tip If your paper plate is white, perhaps colour the ring in green.

3. Cut out the poppies and leaves and decroate the wreath by sticking them onto the base.

We are seeking a suitably qualified Customer Service / Store Person to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the manager, this position will be based at our Mareeba store.

RESPONSIBILITIES: • Ensure daily operations of the store conducted efficiently and safely.

• Service customer enquiries and generate sales transactions from in store traffic.

• Loading and unloading vehicles as required.

• Conduct stock control and stock movement processes in key areas.

• Restock shelves and perform stock replenishment requests.

• Liaise with field staff to prepare sales orders and deliveries as required.

• Maintenance of a clean and tidy workplace.

• Maintain the goals and strategies of the company.

KEY CRITERIA: • Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.

• Organisational, planning and time management skills.

• Self-motivated and organised.

• Ability to work in a team environment.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: • Current driver’s license Class C. • Strong customer service focus and computer skills.

• Current Forklift license.

• Experience in rural retail environment preferred but not essential.

Keep active during lockdown

KEEPING active during the coronavirus lockdown is important for mental and physical health.

The Mareeba Golf Club is one of few recreation facilities still allowed to operate in Mareeba and the Management Committee wants to ensure it remains open to its members.

While the clubhouse remains closed to the public and the 19th hole is dry for now, the course remains open for people to play golf.

The committee says strict social distancing measures are in place to help protect the community and staff.

Players can only play in pairs and must observe the 1.5 m rule at all times.

Buggies are restricted to one person only and the flag

must be kept in the hole.

There are no hand shakes after a round- a simple tip of the hat is sufficient.

In addition, the committee is enforcing a ban on dogs which was established in 1997. This includes dogs on a leash.

The committee says that guidelines from Golf Australia and the Department of Health, state that the course is open to golfers only.

Golfers are also reminded that bringing alcohol (BYO) onto the course is an offence and they will be asked to leave.

The committee says while there are no handshakes or cheers after the game, golf is a great way to self-isolate while keeping healthy and happy.

Football season goes online with new E-Series

WITH sporting seasons across the country being shut down one after another, Football Queensland (FQ) has decided to take advantage of the isolation period to host an E-Series on gaming consoles.

Four divisions have been drawn up across two gaming platforms; PS4 Seniors, PS4 Juniors, Xbox Seniors and Xbox Juniors with over 700 people registering for the new Series.

The matches are even streamed live on FQ’s Twitch channel where people can tune in and watch the matches in real time.

Football Queensland had decided to do everything possible to keep their participants engaged with football since the games suspension in March, and decided now was the time for Queensland to have their own E-Series.

FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said the Football Queensland ESeries would provide a fun way

for local football fans to engage with the sport during a challenging period.

“It is crucial our football community unites together at this time, and to have the opportunity to do that by exploring the eSports space with the launch of the Football Queensland E-Series is extremely exciting,” Cavallucci said.

“We invite all Queenslanders to join in the fun and do their region proud.”

The response garnered from the launch of the new E-Series has been immense, with the tournament even having to be restructured to incorporate a second stage due to the numbers.
