Singing sensations rock music festival

TALENT was on show over the weekend with the annual FNQ Country Music Festival featuring an exciting and talented mix of the ages who sang old classics and modern tunes for all to enjoy.

Hosted by the Walkamin Country Music Club and held at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds, hundreds flocked to the event over the three days to enjoy all the festival had to offer.

The Talent Quest, which ran from Friday to Sunday, unearthed the very best artists from across the region. After three days of singing local Mareeba artist Kelli Scott received the 2019 Country Music Australia Academy (CMAA) scholarship award.

Kelly will now head to Tamworth in July next year to work with the best of the best in the industry in a series of workshops and gain valuable experience in the country music industry.

Other overall category winners at Sunday’s final were – Juvenile Karlee Searle from Charters Towers, Junior Bella McKenzie from Mackay and the open section was won by Lavina Steward from Townsville.

An encouragement award went to Travis Searle and the Henderson Family ‘Spirit of the Festival’ went to Blain Woodard.

The talent coming through the festival each and every year is inspiring to see.

Mosque community open day THE Mareeba Islamic Society is hosting an open day on Saturday, October 26 at the Mareeba Mosque Hall and invites the community to come along.

The open day is part of a nationwide event with the purpose of providing a safe environment for people who have questions

and would like to know more about their local mosque.

The day is an opportunity to foster peace and understanding among the vast and diverse community present within the Mareeba Shire.

The open day helps break misconceptions around the Is-

lamic belief and to brush away what people might have heard over the internet by asking the experts personally.

The day, open to all, will be held at the Mareeba Mosque Hall on the corner of Walsh and Lloyd Streets, from between 10am to 4pm and will feature

two separate tour times of the Mosque.

The tours of the Mosque give people a chance to gather a better understanding of the Mareeba Mosque and the people who worship there. There will be information stalls and a Q&A session being offered.

Questions are more than welcome on the open day as a scholar will be available to talk to and help people with any questions they may have.

An array of multicultural foods, tea and coffee will also be available throughout the day for visitors to enjoy.

Frecklington pledges support for Nullinga STATE Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington was in Far North Queensland last week to announce her commitment to delivering critical water infrastructure to the region – namely Nullinga Dam. Ms Frecklington’s visit comes just two months after the Palaszczuk Government released the Nulling Dam’s business case and determined that it wasn’t financially viable.

Ms Frecklington said the business case, which stated that Nullinga will cost close to a billion dollars, was flawed.

“The Labor Government have effectively ruled out the Nullinga Dam based on flawed assumptions,” she said.

“Under Labor, the review of the capital cost has increased by 121-231 per cent since the preliminary business case.

“The Palaszczuk Government have plucked the figures for their business case out of the air, therefore it needs to be peer reviewed.

“The local mayors and interest groups don’t trust the business case – it’s a joke and the people of Far North Queensland are not going to be treated like fools by a government who are

clearly anti-regions and antiwater.”

Ms Frecklington was joined in Cairns by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning, Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Council’s Executive Darlene Irvine, Advance Cairns President Trent Twomey, Cairns Chamber of Commerce President Nick Loukas and MSF Sugar Mil Manager Chris Hoare – all of whom have been outspoken about the need for more water infrastructure projects like Nullinga Dam for the sustainability of the region long-term.

“They all stood with me today in Cairns in support of the LNP’s announcement around making sure that we have water security in this region for years to come,” Ms Frecklington said.

Despite concerns over the cost of the project, Ms Frecklington said if she’s elected, an LNP State Government will work collaboratively and proactively with the Federal Government.

Local coach to international coach JUNE Cotter has recently checked an item off her bucket list as she has recently left Mareeba bound for the INAS Global Games to be held in Brisbane.

Similar to the Paralympics, The International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS) Global Games is the pinnacle for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Mrs Cotter has been selected as manager/assistant coach for the INAS Global Games swimming team alongside Cairns local Andrew ‘Herbie’ Howard.

Mr Howard has an extensive resume in swimming with his coaching of several Paralympian swimmers, with both coaches for the Games being selected out of FNQ it is an exciting time for swimming in the Far North Mrs Cotter applied for the Manager/assistant coach job on April 19 and received confirmation about her position two months ago.

“I found out about two months ago, so it was very exciting to hear

that I had got it,” she said.

“They’re quite high calibre roles so I was very honoured.”

Mrs Cotter is extremely excited to be coaching for an internationally recognised swimming team.

“I’m hoping to do a good job and impress because I might get chosen again,” she said.

“I would like to thank the local community and my staff at the Mareeba Swimming pool. “Without them I wouldn’t be able to take this opportunity.”

The swimming team that Mr Howard and Mrs Cotter will be coaching is made up of Down syndrome swimmers including world record holder Katrina Coffey.

Mrs Coffey holds the current INAS world swimming records for the 1500m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Brisbane was chosen to host this year’s games where thousands of athletes from 50 countries will all compete in 10 sports and field events.

June Cotter is currently at the INAS Global Games as an assistant swimming coach.

THE Australian Future Agro Challenge (AusFAC) is back for its fourth year as the Atherton Tablelands will play host to the much-anticipated event over the first weekend of November.

AusFac is the Australian arm of a global competition, providing participants the chance to showcase their food and agricultural innovations as they vie for the Australian Agripreneur of the Year award.

The winner gets an expenses paid entry (including travel) to the global Future Agro Challenge, where they have access to international food and agtech mentors, clients, investors, and corporate contacts, providing

them with a massive opportunity to expand their startup throughout the world.

The event will also consist of prominent members within the industry, with its main guest speaker KPMG Melbourne Partner and Head of KPMG’s AgriTech division Ben van Delden.

Changes to TRC Divisional Boundaries The Local Government Change Commission has completed its consultation and review of the Tablelands Regional Council divisional boundaries and provided its assessment to the Minister for Local Government for implementation.

“Each division needs to have roughly the same number of voters to ensure each person’s vote has the same value,” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Pa-

ronella said.

“After crunching the numbers and reviewing submissions from the community, the Change Commission has increased the number of voters in Division 2.

“The most significant change is that Herberton has moved out of Division 1 and into Division 2.

Cr Wyatt to nominate for second term as councillor MAREEBA Shire Council’s (MSC) Cr Lenore Wyatt has announced that she will be nominating for the role of councillor once again in the upcoming 2020 elections.

Cr Wyatt made the announcement via her official Facebook page.

“When I first threw my hat in the ring to perhaps be elected as one of your councillors, I let you all know 12 months ahead of time,” she said.

Legends of League night hits Mareeba

THERE is set to be a strong crowd on hand this Friday as community members both young and old will converge on the Mareeba Turf Club for the Legends of League night.

The night will act as the official launch and fundraiser for the Mareeba Old Players and Supporters group (MOPS), which brings rugby league enthusiasts from the region together to socialise all while helping support “The Greatest Game of All”.

In addition, money raised will also go towards much-needed funding for the Black Dog Institute and breast cancer awareness.

The Australian sporting legends who will be attending this Friday night are former rugby league greats Martin Bella, Paul Sironen, Royce Simmons and Wally Fullerton-Smith, along with former Australian cricketer Doug Walters.

Martin Bella, a veteran of 235 professional rugby league games, 21 State of Origins and 9 Tests for Australia, spoke about the enormous impact groups like

MOPS have on its members and the game of rugby league within the community.

“It’s fantastic to see a group like MOPS actively trying to promote the game in Mareeba and its surrounds,” he said.

“In addition, the MOPS members have plenty of rugby league and life experience, and will be crucial in providing direction at their local club.”

Bella said MOPS will be extremely valuable in providing its members with a way to reconnect with rugby league.

“A number of people who can no longer physically play feel a dislocation from the game itself and the positive social aspects that it brings,” he said.

“This gives people with a common foundation a chance to maintain those social ties that all of us loved when we played rugby league and hopefully MOPS can garner the support of the community.”

For those interested in attending, the event will run from 6pm – late.

Former rugby league great Martin Bella will be one of five guest speakers at this Friday’s MOPS launch and Legends of League night.

There will be raffles and auctions of memorabilia available on the night. There is no entry

fee; however $30 will get you a ticket in the lucky door prize and a burger.

Tickets can be bought at the door or at the AquaFix Pool Shop on 71 Byrnes Street, Mareeba.

Ms Lang said by employing Matthew, the society hopes that he learns skills needed to further his employment opportunities, give him a sense of self-worth and that feeling of accomplishment that a lot of people take for granted.

“We hope that others will see just how valuable a person can be regardless of their background,” she said.

“If a not-for profit-organisation like us can offer someone these opportunities, we hope others can too.”

LUNCHES EVERY DAY THERE are often assumptions made about the perceived limitations those living with autism have, and there is no greater example of someone who challenges those misconceptions than that of Matthew Barnard.

Matthew has been volunteering with the Atherton Show Society for the past year, and in doing so has become an integral member of the team.

Matthew’s dedication to volunteering for the not-for-profit organisation has been rewarded as the Atherton Show Society

recently offered him gainful employment.

Atherton Show Society Event Coordinator Kylie Lang said since volunteering with the organisation, Matthew has been an asset in the office completing small tasks that would usually be put to the side and completed when staff had time.

“Some of these tasks may not be completed until just before the show which is quite a hectic time for us; however by having those tasks completed (by Matthew) weeks before reduced the

stress on staff and other volunteers, allowing then to focus on other areas,” she said.

Matthew’s official job title is Assistant to the Events Manager, where he will be working in the office completing tasks such as copying, shredding and preparing items for the next show as well as working around the grounds completing small maintenance jobs.

Marcel takes on gruelling Crocodile Trophy MAREEBA local Vince Marcel is currently competing in one of the most gruelling and iconic mountain bike stage races in the world, as today marks the fifth of eight consecutive days of riding that pushes the athletes to their ultimate limit as part of the Crocodile Trophy.

The annual race takes place in Tropical North Queensland and covers a total of 700 kilometres that incorporates a variety of trails such as rainforest, bushland and Outback tracks along with river crossings.

Marcel is competing in the Amateur Masters category, which pits the best amateur riders between 35-40 years of age against each other.

It’s Marcel’s first ever time competing in the Crocodile Trophy, and he noted the enormous amount of preparation that was

required to get ready for the event.

“I have been training virtually every day for the past four months,” he said.

“Throughout that training I have incorporated both mountain bike and road riding which will hopefully hold me in good stead for the race.”

When Marcel spoke with The Express last Thursday (two days out from the event), he said while he wasn’t sure what to expect heading into the event, he knew it was going to be one that tested him both physically and mentally.

“I am both nervous and excited,” he said.

“I am definitely experiencing plenty of nerves as it is such a long race; however I couldn’t pass up this opportunity as it is something that has been on my

bucket list.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have made sure that I have reached out to other riders so I can take their advice on-board and perform at my best.”

Marcel said he would like to thank those who played an integral role in his preparation for the race.

“Firstly I would like to recognise Giant Bicycle Centre Cairns for getting me ready, they have been crucial in the preparation of my equipment among other things,” he said.

“I also would like to thank my coach Peter Lister from Cadence Cycle Coaching for his efforts and the Mareeba Discount Drug Store for providing me with all of my nutrition needs.

A Saturday for Sarah THERE was an extremely strong crowd on hand at the Mareeba Golf Club on Saturday to help fundraise for local woman Sarah Bensted who is currently battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The event, which was held by the Mareeba Business Women’s Club Inc, saw residents young and old dust off their golf clubs in support of an individual who has been an integral part of the community her entire life.

The event’s coordinator Angela Nason said Sarah and her family are very well-respected within the community.

“As you can tell by the amount of people attending, she has a number of family and friends who support her which is a testament to how she is as a person,” she said.

“We were hoping for roughly 50 people, but we have more than 70 here today so it has been a fantastic success.

“The strong numbers are yet another indication of how wonderful Mareeba is as a community – we come together and help those in need.”

Mrs Nason took time to thank those who contributed to the event’s success.

“A huge thank you goes to our sponsors Steggles, Russo’s Quality Meats and Curcio’s Bakery – they’ve provided all the food for the barbecue this afternoon,” she said.

“I also want to recognise the Mareeba Golf Club for being a part of this fundraiser and the community as a whole for showing such great support.”

Hunting activities pose serious risk to banana industry and economy

Banana growers have pleaded with recreational pig hunters in Far North Queensland to not enter banana farms without permission, warning that a recent spate of illegal trespassing posed a serious risk to their $600 million industry and the Cassowary Coast economy.

The Australian Banana Growers’ Council has raised these concerns following reports of increased illegal hunting activity on banana farms in the Tully/Innisfail region, prompting major fears it could lead to the spread of the devastating fungal disease Panama tropical race 4 (TR4).

Panama TR4 is a soil borne disease that can be transferred by people, animals, vehicles and other machinery entering and exiting banana properties.

ABGC Deputy Chair Leon Collins said he had recently become aware of a significant rise in the number of growers reporting illegal entry onto their farms from local hunters, including dogs and vehicles entering properties regularly without permission.

“We are definitely not here to get pig hunters off-side. However, it is imperative that we make them aware that entering any banana property without permission and not adhering to strict biosecurity measures, could have

absolutely devastating impacts by potentially spreading Panama TR4,” Mr Collins said.

“If this disease does spread more broadly, it will not only affect farmers’ own livelihoods, but also impact heavily on the local communities of the Cassowary Coast that rely so heavily on the banana industry.”

“The industry is the major employer and main economic driver for the entire Cassowary Coast region.

“To hear that people are cutting fences to enter properties, without permission, thereby putting our entire industry in jeopardy is alarming and we implore those that are doing it to please consider the consequences of their actions and stop the practice immediately.”

Mr Collins noted that feral pigs were a major concern for growers, as they too can transfer disease between properties.

However, the ABGC, government and growers had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a co-ordinated feral pig culling program over the past two years.

Using a multi-pronged approach, including aerial shooting, ground shooting, baiting, exclusion fencing and trapping, more than 4600 pigs have been culled from the Tully Valley since July 2017.

“Since the first Queensland detection of TR4 in the Tully Valley in March 2015, there have been just two other farms detected with the disease, thanks to the collaborative effort of ABGC, Biosecurity Queensland, individual growers, researchers and the wider community.

“There is no other country in the world that has had similar success in containing this disease.

“We’ve had to adapt in order to fend off this disease and industry, government and growers have spent millions of dollars implementing extensive biosecurity controls.

“If just one pig hunter cuts a fence to enter a banana property and they pick up soil that is infected with this disease and they move this soil via their tyres or footwear to another farm, it jeopardises every measure and control that we have put in place.”

Mr Collins said it was a responsibility of all Queenslanders to take an active role in managing biosecurity risks under their control. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, individuals and organisations must take all reasonable steps to ensure they do not spread a pest, disease or contaminant.

Outstanding Atherton apprentice finalist in MTA awards

THE Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) has recently announced Jesse Weatherhead (pictured) from Atherton Smash Repair Specialist, Far North Queensland as an Apprentice of the Year finalist.

Jesse has been selected as a finalist from over 1,800 MTA Institute apprentices throughout Queensland and is among a group of ten other candidates vying for the highly sought-after title.

Jesse is a fourth year AUR32116 Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology apprentice and was

nominated for the accolade by his MTA Institute trainer Shane Palmer for his great attitude and high working standards.

“Jesse is willing to undertake repair work no matter how big the job,” Mr Palmer said.

“He has a great relationship with colleagues and his employer, is always attentive and shows great detail and pride in his work.”

To be revealed at the MTA Queensland Industry Awards Dinner on Saturday November 16, the Apprentice of the Year award will be bestowed upon the apprentice who has demonstrated a dedication to learning and performed above and beyond expectations.

“It would be amazing to win the Apprentice of the Year title, Jesse Weatherhead said.

“I’ve just been doing my normal thing but to be recognised for that is great - I am very proud of the achievement.”

Group Chief Executive for MTA Queensland Dr Brett Dale said the announcement of the Apprentice of the Year award is the highlight of the Industry Awards Dinner.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to acknowledge and celebrate the enormous achievement of these outstanding apprentices,” he said.

“I am thrilled to see apprentices from regional and metropolitan Queensland in the running as well as a cross section of automotive qualifications.”

Preserving Coen’s police history Gone but never forgotten is a message that lies deep with retired Queensland Police Service Inspector Jock MacDonald.

True to that message, Jock recently travelled to Coen to install two memorial plaques for two fallen police officers at the front of Coen Police Station.

Whilst in Coen, Jock reinstalled the renovated headstone of Constable Herring who died at 27-years-old in 1903 from

Jock has close ties with the Coen area having served as a Constable at Coen Police Station in the early 1960s then returning on numerous occasions as a relieving Sergeant and then later as the Cape Inspector.

In his own words, Jock formed a “nostalgic affection” with the cape and through his research went on to write the book titled Policing ‘The Coen’ which documented the

history of policing in this area between 1885 and 2011.

He initially served two years there, performing police pack-horse patrols to a number of missions and cattle stations on Cape York, before returning to Brisbane.

He soon found the big city was not to his liking and, after twelve months, returned to Coen for a second term, where he resumed general police duties, this time utilising a Willys Jeep 4WD which had then

been allocated to Coen.

During his research Jock became aware of two former serving police constables who passed away in Coen during the early pioneering days of Cape York Peninsula.

Jock said it has been a privilege to arrange for the supply of two memorial plaques to commemorate the two officers.

“Their plaques now sit proudly at the front entrance of the Coen Police Station,” he said.

I requested a copy of her response, but the council has not agreed to give me that – and expects that I should be satisfied with the CEO’s assumptions and interpretations. As advised, I had no opportunity to reply (as they have refused to give me her response); was not advised of the meeting; was not asked if I was happy to have it in open session (which I was as I had come to the meeting for that purpose); and therefore do not consider it just nor appropriate for a report to be made public when it does not contain all of the relevant information – only that part which supports Cr Eden’s apparent version summary

Australia’s worst drought WITH the current drought occupying so much media space it seems pertinent to ask when was Australia’s worst known drought and how long did it last?

The dreadful 1930s drought seems to barely rate a mention these days and the decade-long Federation Drought of the 1890s and 1900s has been largely airbrushed from history.

But according to 2016 research by a group that included Dr Chris Turney, Australia once had a drought where no rain fell on the mainland for 22 years.

Dr Turney is no “denier”; he’s the man-made global warming believer who’s ship famously got stuck in ice while trying to prove the Antarctic was melting.

So when was this 22-year mega-death drought? Appar-

ently it began 519 years ago, during the depths of the Little Ice Age (LIA).

The LIA was very cold so there was less atmospheric water vapour from which rain could form. In warmer times more evaporation means more water vapour which means more rain.

Dr Andy Pitman, one of Australia’s leading “climate experts” and UN-IPCC lead author, recently said there’s no link between global warming and drought.

Nonetheless, the frightbats at “our ABC”, some of whom we most-generously pay $5,769 per week, are insisting man-made CO2-warming will cause more drought.

And because the ABC has sucked the profit out of private news media they fall in line due to a lack of resources for their own research.

All of which means our gormless, gutless, brainless, spineless, populist politicians fall swooningly into line and work actively against our national interests.

For example, in September the federal government released 400,000 million litres from dams built for towns and farmers and used it to flood forests, benefitting only mosquitoes and snakes.

When will this madness end? Only when a majority of us stop voting for the GreenALP-LNP UNiparty.

6. Add the lemon juice and the lemon rind and mix on a medium speed for a further 1 minute to combine. Transfer the cheesecake mixture to the slice tin and gently smooth the surface. Place the Lemon Cheesecake Slice into the fridge for a minimum of six hours (preferably overnight) to set before cutting into pieces to serve.

Speedway action A NIGHT of full throttle action packed racing was held at Mareeba Speedway on Saturday October 5.

With two titles up for grabs on the night, drivers put on an

impressive display for all in attendance at the last race meet of 2019.

The QLD Super Street Sedan Title saw Dean Dagleish crowned king, while Mark Alba

came in second and Cameron O’Flynn finished third.

GRAHAM Clark Jnr capped off a stunning debut season at the Atherton Senior Roosters after being named the club’s All Wheel Drive Centre 2019 Player of the Year.

Clark was named the winner of the Roosters highest individual award at their presentation dinner held on Saturday night at the Atherton Hotel.

The former Intrust Super Cup player helped the Roosters first grade drive deep into the Cairns District Rugby League finals where they fell one game short of the grand final. While on stage for his award presentation, Graham Clark Jnr confirmed he will play in the red, white and blue again in 2020 which is season 102 for the Roosters.

Dinner guests included former Atherton junior and senior player Rodney Griffin and QRL League Operations Manager Sheron McDougall.

Two out of three for ain’t bad THREE of the five FNQ Football teams that competed in the Crad Evans on Saturday completed trebles, unfortunatley the Mareeba Bulls were not one of those teams.

Heading into the match full of confidence the Mareeba outfit began strongly and should have put a couple of early chances away which may have seen the game turn in a different direction but it was not to be.

Townsville’s Olympic side soon got on top of the Bulls scoring one goal, plus two others that were disallowed as they went into the break 1 nil up.

The exclusion of Lucio Da Rocha from the match due to injury was a letdown but even more so was the lack of midfield presence for the bull in the second half.

Injury saw the introduction

of Dennis Allen earlier than he would have liked, but all of his experience and knowhow wasn’t enough to inspire his young team to a historical treble. Another two goals during the course of the second half saw the Bulls go down 3-0 in the final.

A dejected Dennis Allen said after the match, this was a huge learning experience for the younger boys – unfortunately for us older ones we may not get another chance to experience it.

“It’s a little difficult to pinpoint where we went wrong, the difference in playing styles was there, they were very strong and physical in each position and very direct,” said Coach Allen.

“They were better than us all over the park, it just wasn’t our time, we will be better for it next year.

“We put the effort in we just didn’t get the reward.”

Cricket season kicks off Atherton batsman Paul Nasser top scorer on Saturday with 63 runs.

THE cricket season kicked off for Atherton's Senior first and second grade teams with a return to two-day format matches in the Cricket Far North competition.

Atherton First Grade were at home to Rovers who won the toss and elected to bat, post-

ing 176 runs on the first day of play. Paul Nasser stepped in to the captain’s role and called in a few favours from mates to put together a team in the absence of rep players Dan Parnell, Michael Salerno and with a host of regulars otherwise engaged.

cally with Paul Nasser and Lachy Hollit standing out in a good team effort. Lachy picked up 5 unassisted wickets off 22.2 overs with his consistent line and length bowling, and Paul worked hard for 2 wickets off 24 overs.

The boys welcomed back the reps for day 2, and a patient batting display by Paul Nasser laid the platform for a 1st Innings win for the team.

Paul and Chris Adams got off to a good start with a 48 run partnership, followed by a 68 run partnership between Paul and Dan Parnell, and a 38 run partnership between Paul and Logan Poggioli.

Atherton's lower order collapsed soon after reaching the target, closing the innings at 192 and claiming a 1st innings win.

They were forced to return to the field for 6 overs to play out time, during which Rovers put on a quickfire 65 in their 2nd innings dig.
